Hello, welcome to this program called, "Books of the Book". 00:00:20.40\00:00:23.78 We're so glad that you are taking this time 00:00:23.81\00:00:26.04 to join us in this-- a Bible study. 00:00:26.07\00:00:28.71 We are studying the gospel of John. 00:00:28.74\00:00:30.56 And today we are reading parts of chapter 5. 00:00:30.59\00:00:34.94 So open your Bibles and join us. 00:00:34.97\00:00:37.67 And let me introduce to you Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.20 He is with us, he is the dean of religion 00:00:40.23\00:00:42.64 at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:42.67\00:00:45.98 And it's been a pleasure for me to study the Gospel of John. 00:00:46.01\00:00:50.44 He is very talented, very brilliant. 00:00:50.47\00:00:52.36 He's written several books in particular 00:00:52.39\00:00:55.91 three books on the Book of John. 00:00:55.94\00:00:59.30 Dr. Paulien, welcome again. It's always good to be with you. 00:00:59.33\00:01:04.15 Let me ask you a question, 00:01:04.18\00:01:05.85 what is your favorite book of the Bible? 00:01:05.88\00:01:09.56 As I mentioned you've written three books 00:01:09.59\00:01:12.06 on the Gospel of John. 00:01:12.09\00:01:13.89 You've written several books just in general. 00:01:13.92\00:01:16.42 I'm going to assume that the Gospel of John 00:01:16.45\00:01:18.65 is your favorite it seems. Well, I do. 00:01:18.68\00:01:21.95 I am pretty partial to the Book of Romans. 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.38 I think there is some very important things 00:01:24.41\00:01:26.59 that go on there. 00:01:26.62\00:01:28.43 It's a very challenging book 00:01:28.46\00:01:29.83 but as in a great blessing to me. 00:01:29.86\00:01:32.73 Obviously, Book of Revelation has a lot of interest to me. 00:01:32.76\00:01:37.27 I've studied it but, yeah, you're probably right. 00:01:37.30\00:01:39.05 I think John is probably my favorite. 00:01:39.08\00:01:41.12 It's got my favorite text anyway. 00:01:41.15\00:01:42.85 You remember chapter 3 verse 8, though? 00:01:42.88\00:01:45.28 Which says? 00:01:45.31\00:01:46.69 Which basically says, "The wind blows wherever it will 00:01:46.72\00:01:50.02 no one knows where it's coming from or where it's going, 00:01:50.05\00:01:53.02 so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 00:01:53.05\00:01:56.35 You know and that means, you know, 00:01:56.38\00:01:57.75 people who are just a little bit different, 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.97 people who are creative and surprise people and so on. 00:02:01.00\00:02:05.00 That's kind of the thing the Holy Spirit does. 00:02:05.03\00:02:06.95 Who allow the Holy Spirit to lead them in different ways? 00:02:06.98\00:02:10.85 But when you do that then you often get led in a way 00:02:10.88\00:02:14.10 that most people wouldn't think was the right way, 00:02:14.13\00:02:16.94 because the Holy Spirit doesn't go by human paths, 00:02:16.97\00:02:20.39 but leads us on a divine path of creativity. 00:02:20.42\00:02:23.99 Well, today we are picking up in chapter 5. 00:02:24.02\00:02:28.31 What exactly are we going to be talking about today? 00:02:28.34\00:02:31.02 John Chapter 5 and beginning with verse 16 00:02:31.05\00:02:35.03 is probably right up there with the prologue of John, 00:02:35.06\00:02:39.46 one of the most important, densest passages in the book. 00:02:39.49\00:02:43.22 And we're going to spend some time in these verses 00:02:43.25\00:02:46.48 and try to go into a little bit of detail. 00:02:46.51\00:02:48.86 Okay, and what verses are we reading in chapter 5? 00:02:48.89\00:02:51.77 I would start probably with 00:02:51.80\00:02:53.78 the verses 16 through 18 of chapter 5. 00:02:53.81\00:02:56.95 Shall we read them? I think we should, yeah. 00:02:56.98\00:03:00.16 "The man departed, and told the Jews 00:03:00.19\00:03:01.79 that it was Jesus, who had made him well. 00:03:01.82\00:03:04.99 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus 00:03:05.02\00:03:07.52 and sought to kill him 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.27 because he had done these things on the Sabbath. 00:03:09.30\00:03:12.35 But Jesus answered them, 00:03:12.38\00:03:14.16 "My Father has been working until now, 00:03:14.19\00:03:16.82 and I have been working. 00:03:16.85\00:03:19.00 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, 00:03:19.03\00:03:21.60 because he not only broke the Sabbath, 00:03:21.63\00:03:24.28 but also said that God was His Father, 00:03:24.31\00:03:26.77 making himself equal with God." 00:03:26.80\00:03:31.41 Okay, so this is really the first active hostility 00:03:31.44\00:03:35.71 to Jesus in the Gospel of John. 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.69 Up until now, you know, 00:03:37.72\00:03:39.69 the Pharisees have been out there. 00:03:39.72\00:03:41.09 I mean, Nicodemus wasn't hostile really. 00:03:41.12\00:03:43.67 And they challenged him a little bit 00:03:43.70\00:03:45.73 but right here you see serious activists all at hospitality. 00:03:45.76\00:03:49.95 The police have kind of dragged Him in 00:03:49.98\00:03:52.08 and they're questioning Him 00:03:52.11\00:03:53.52 and trying to figure out what to do with Him. 00:03:53.55\00:03:55.82 And Jesus makes kind of a striking statement. 00:03:55.85\00:04:00.47 He says the Father is working until now and I too I'm working. 00:04:00.50\00:04:05.93 In other words, My Father works on the Sabbath, 00:04:05.96\00:04:09.47 so it's appropriate for Me to work on the Sabbath. 00:04:09.50\00:04:12.86 Now the Rabbis actually believed that God works on the Sabbath. 00:04:12.89\00:04:17.03 So Jesus is really saying something that's very compatible 00:04:17.06\00:04:20.78 with what the Rabbis would believe. 00:04:20.81\00:04:23.69 The Rabbis believe that babies are born, people die, 00:04:23.72\00:04:29.88 the sun shines, the rain falls, 00:04:29.91\00:04:32.19 you see, all of that is God's work. 00:04:32.22\00:04:34.69 So its evidence to them that God actually works on the Sabbath. 00:04:34.72\00:04:38.28 So Jesus is saying, hey, God's works on the Sabbath, 00:04:38.31\00:04:40.91 why shouldn't I? 00:04:40.94\00:04:43.53 And they didn't like the analogy 00:04:43.56\00:04:47.02 because of course they didn't understand Jesus to be God. 00:04:47.05\00:04:52.15 So again for the reader this makes sense 00:04:52.18\00:04:56.52 if you're coming from the prologue 00:04:56.55\00:04:57.92 and you know who Jesus is? 00:04:57.95\00:04:59.41 That He was with God from eternity 00:04:59.44\00:05:01.69 that qualitatively He is what God is, 00:05:01.72\00:05:04.88 that He is worthy of worship, 00:05:04.91\00:05:06.55 that He is the Creator of the universe 00:05:06.58\00:05:08.37 and the Ruler of the universe. 00:05:08.40\00:05:10.33 If all of that is true, 00:05:10.36\00:05:12.82 then Jesus has to work on the Sabbath. 00:05:12.85\00:05:15.50 You see, because the universe needs to be sustained, 00:05:15.53\00:05:19.38 the earth needs to be sustained, etcetera. 00:05:19.41\00:05:21.53 So Jesus is defending that, 00:05:21.56\00:05:24.14 hey, the Sabbath is a day to do healing. 00:05:24.17\00:05:28.02 The Sabbath is a day to help people, 00:05:28.05\00:05:30.55 the Sabbath is a day to do the kinds of things 00:05:30.58\00:05:33.74 that God would do on that day. 00:05:33.77\00:05:36.04 The reason that the commandment says, 00:05:36.07\00:05:37.85 don't work on the Sabbath is the kind of work 00:05:38.06\00:05:40.71 we do would be distracting from Sabbath work. 00:05:40.74\00:05:44.85 You see, Sabbath work is focused on God, 00:05:44.88\00:05:47.34 Sabbath work is focused on healing. 00:05:47.37\00:05:49.55 It's doing the things that God would do, 00:05:49.58\00:05:52.50 but when we are busy with the normal activities of everyday, 00:05:52.53\00:05:56.02 that's distracting away from that. 00:05:56.05\00:05:58.09 So God is inviting people to take a day 00:05:58.12\00:06:00.28 in which they do things a little bit differently 00:06:00.31\00:06:03.30 than they would the rest of the week. 00:06:03.33\00:06:04.95 And that's the reason why they wanted to kill Him 00:06:04.98\00:06:10.45 because not only He broke the Sabbath 00:06:10.48\00:06:12.74 but then He also claimed God as His Father. 00:06:12.77\00:06:17.53 Well, you see, that's the thing. 00:06:17.56\00:06:18.93 If He is truly God then He has the right to do 00:06:18.96\00:06:22.30 what God does on the Sabbath. 00:06:22.33\00:06:23.88 If He's not, then He's committing 00:06:23.91\00:06:26.23 blasphemy in claiming so. 00:06:26.26\00:06:28.42 You see, He is doing something only God is allowed to do 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.96 that means He's making Himself God. 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.29 Now these are issues that come back 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.14 again and again in chapter 7, 00:06:35.17\00:06:38.28 they remember this incident about the Sabbath 00:06:38.31\00:06:40.56 in the pool of the Bethesda, and that becomes an issue there. 00:06:40.59\00:06:43.48 In chapter 9, a blind man is healed on the Sabbath. 00:06:43.51\00:06:46.35 So that issue recurs, then in chapter 10, 00:06:46.38\00:06:50.14 the issue of calling Himself God, 00:06:50.17\00:06:52.59 you know, I and the father are One 00:06:52.62\00:06:54.33 that comes up again in chapter 10. 00:06:54.36\00:06:56.69 So right here in these three verses 00:06:56.72\00:06:59.47 it introduces a couple of themes that occur over and over again. 00:06:59.50\00:07:04.26 But the part that we want to look at in this program 00:07:04.29\00:07:07.27 is that Jesus' statement in verse 17 00:07:07.30\00:07:10.01 becomes the foundation of everything 00:07:10.04\00:07:12.61 that is said in verses 19 to 30. 00:07:12.64\00:07:15.30 So let's look at it again, 00:07:15.33\00:07:17.30 in chapter 5: 17, Jesus said to them, 00:07:17.33\00:07:22.11 "My Father is always at work to this very day, 00:07:22.14\00:07:26.01 and I too am working." 00:07:26.04\00:07:29.20 So what's God doing on the Sabbath? 00:07:29.23\00:07:32.17 He's giving life. He is judging. 00:07:32.20\00:07:35.78 You know, people are born people die. 00:07:35.81\00:07:37.88 You know, people think of that in terms of judgment. 00:07:37.91\00:07:40.92 And He is doing the work of salvation, 00:07:40.95\00:07:45.07 you know, saving us. 00:07:45.10\00:07:46.47 And that's exactly what verses 19 to 30 are about. 00:07:46.50\00:07:50.92 In verses 19 to 30, Jesus is elaborating on His statement. 00:07:50.95\00:07:55.27 Here is what I mean, when I say that I work on the Sabbath. 00:07:55.30\00:07:59.91 I give life, I give salvation, I pass judgment as needed. 00:07:59.94\00:08:05.33 These are activities that God needs to be doing everyday. 00:08:05.36\00:08:08.55 But they're particularly according to Jesus 00:08:08.58\00:08:11.80 appropriate on the Sabbath. 00:08:11.83\00:08:13.93 So I think what we should do now 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.89 is get into verses 19 through 30, 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.73 it might be helpful to start for you 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.49 to read that whole section through. 00:08:20.52\00:08:22.63 I would hope that our viewers 00:08:22.66\00:08:24.63 would also have your Bibles in hand 00:08:24.66\00:08:26.61 and that you would read these same passages with us 00:08:26.64\00:08:28.91 and then I want to note a few things 00:08:28.94\00:08:32.04 as we go through there. 00:08:32.07\00:08:34.30 Okay, so chapter 5:19-30, 00:08:34.33\00:08:38.88 you have a bible read along with me. 00:08:38.91\00:08:41.49 Then Jesus answered and said to them, 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.78 "Most assuredly, I say it to you, 00:08:43.81\00:08:46.01 the Son can do nothing of Himself, 00:08:46.04\00:08:47.74 but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, 00:08:47.77\00:08:51.23 the Son also does in like manner. 00:08:51.26\00:08:53.76 For the Father loves the Son, 00:08:53.79\00:08:55.17 and shows Him all things that He Himself does 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.83 and He will show Him greater works than these 00:08:58.86\00:09:01.29 that you may marvel. 00:09:01.32\00:09:02.83 For as the Father raises the dead 00:09:02.86\00:09:05.30 and gives life to them 00:09:05.33\00:09:06.98 even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 00:09:07.01\00:09:10.28 For the Father judges no one, 00:09:10.31\00:09:11.97 but has committed all judgment to the Son 00:09:12.00\00:09:15.00 that all should honor the Son 00:09:15.03\00:09:16.40 just as they honor the Father. 00:09:16.43\00:09:18.17 He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, 00:09:18.20\00:09:22.51 who sent Him. 00:09:22.54\00:09:23.91 Most assuredly I say to you, 00:09:23.94\00:09:25.35 he who hears my word and believes in Him 00:09:25.38\00:09:28.00 who sent Me has everlasting life 00:09:28.03\00:09:30.34 and shall not come into judgment 00:09:30.37\00:09:32.21 but has passed from death into life. 00:09:32.24\00:09:34.57 Most assuredly I say to you, the hour is coming and now is, 00:09:34.60\00:09:38.91 when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.45 and those who hear will live 00:09:41.48\00:09:43.79 for as the Father has life in himself, 00:09:43.82\00:09:46.46 so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself 00:09:46.49\00:09:50.39 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also 00:09:50.42\00:09:54.47 because He is the Son of Man. 00:09:54.50\00:09:56.81 Do not marvel at this for the hour is coming 00:09:56.84\00:09:59.49 in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 00:09:59.52\00:10:02.91 and come forth those who have done good 00:10:02.94\00:10:06.21 to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil 00:10:06.24\00:10:09.57 to the resurrection of condemnation. 00:10:09.60\00:10:12.34 I can of myself doing nothing as I hear I judge 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.80 and my judgment is righteous 00:10:16.83\00:10:18.95 because I did not seek my own will 00:10:18.98\00:10:21.49 but the will of the Father who sent Me." 00:10:21.52\00:10:24.75 Okay, let me say some general things about this text 00:10:24.78\00:10:28.15 and then we'll dig a little bit deeper in the second segment. 00:10:28.18\00:10:31.67 The first and the last verses are kind of in common, 00:10:31.70\00:10:34.83 it shows how Jesus and His Father are, 00:10:34.86\00:10:38.08 you know, in a dependent relationship on each other. 00:10:38.11\00:10:40.93 And Jesus does nothing without His father's permission. 00:10:40.96\00:10:44.06 That He is truly, you know, if you've seen Me, 00:10:44.09\00:10:45.87 you've seen the Father. 00:10:45.90\00:10:47.27 He's representing the Father on this earth. 00:10:47.30\00:10:49.21 So verses 19 through 30, 00:10:49.24\00:10:51.50 this whole passage is united together 00:10:51.53\00:10:55.05 and then very interesting there is a couple of places 00:10:55.08\00:10:58.70 verse 21 it says, "For just as the Father 00:10:58.73\00:11:02.81 raises the dead and gives them life, 00:11:02.84\00:11:05.13 so the Son gives life to whomever He pleases." 00:11:05.16\00:11:08.57 Then verse 26, "For as the Father has life in Himself, 00:11:08.60\00:11:12.43 so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself." 00:11:12.46\00:11:15.86 You see the parallel there? 00:11:15.89\00:11:17.48 And it's open with the same Greek phrase is Hosperger 00:11:17.51\00:11:21.14 which basically means just as the Father does this, so I. 00:11:21.17\00:11:25.04 So verse 21 and verse 26 are parallel, 00:11:25.07\00:11:28.63 they're introducing something similar, 00:11:28.66\00:11:31.47 but here's the interesting thing. 00:11:31.50\00:11:34.15 In verse 25, He says, 00:11:34.18\00:11:36.98 "I tell you the truth, the time is coming and has now come." 00:11:37.01\00:11:44.62 And compare that with verse 28, 00:11:44.65\00:11:48.07 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming," 00:11:48.10\00:11:52.07 what's missing? It has come. 00:11:52.10\00:11:55.29 It has come is missing, all right? 00:11:55.32\00:11:57.40 In verse 25, He says, 00:11:57.43\00:11:58.80 "A time is coming and has already come." 00:11:58.83\00:12:02.44 Then in verse 28, "A time is coming." 00:12:02.47\00:12:05.86 You see, one thing you have to understand 00:12:05.89\00:12:07.99 in the Old Testament eschatology end time stuff 00:12:08.02\00:12:12.10 is often introduced by a time is coming, 00:12:12.13\00:12:15.05 or after those days or, you know, at the end and so on. 00:12:15.08\00:12:19.14 There's different ways of phrasing it, 00:12:19.17\00:12:21.08 but a time is coming is an introduction of eschatology. 00:12:21.11\00:12:26.64 You know, it's how the world is going to end, 00:12:26.67\00:12:28.88 what the future is all about, prophecy, if you will. 00:12:28.91\00:12:33.00 But in verse 25 He shifts it just a little bit, He says, 00:12:33.03\00:12:36.69 "A time is coming and already is now." 00:12:36.72\00:12:42.31 Let me show you what is coming. 00:12:42.34\00:12:44.57 Verse 25, "A time is coming and has now come 00:12:44.60\00:12:48.65 when the dead will hear the voice of the son of God 00:12:48.68\00:12:52.30 and those who hear will live." 00:12:52.33\00:12:54.94 Sounds like a resurrection, right? 00:12:54.97\00:12:57.18 But notice verse 28, 00:12:57.21\00:12:59.18 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming 00:12:59.21\00:13:01.93 when all who are in their graves 00:13:01.96\00:13:05.46 will hear His voice and come out." 00:13:05.49\00:13:08.07 You know, there just no mention of graves. 00:13:08.10\00:13:10.60 In verse 25, but there is here 00:13:10.63\00:13:13.08 and so scholars have come to understand 00:13:13.11\00:13:15.61 that there's two types of death 00:13:15.64\00:13:18.46 and two types of resurrection going on in this passage. 00:13:18.49\00:13:23.18 In verses 21 to 26, He's talking about spiritual death, 00:13:23.21\00:13:29.06 the death that comes through addictions, 00:13:29.09\00:13:31.96 through chasing after sins, or being enslaved to Satan. 00:13:31.99\00:13:36.49 It's being as good as dead. It's a miserable life. 00:13:36.52\00:13:40.73 Okay, that is treated like death, 00:13:40.76\00:13:42.53 it's spiritually dead. 00:13:42.56\00:13:44.05 He can bring life to those who are depressed, 00:13:44.08\00:13:46.99 those who are down spiritually, 00:13:47.02\00:13:48.50 those who are messed up. 00:13:48.53\00:13:51.12 Then in verse 28, an hour is coming 00:13:51.15\00:13:53.60 when that those who are in the graves 00:13:53.63\00:13:56.69 will hear His voice and come out, 00:13:56.72\00:13:58.10 that's physical resurrection. 00:13:58.13\00:14:00.16 So you have two eschatologies here. 00:14:00.19\00:14:03.24 There is a present eschatology. 00:14:03.27\00:14:05.27 Jesus is opening up the possibilities 00:14:05.30\00:14:08.64 that can happen right now. 00:14:08.67\00:14:10.85 And then in verse 28 in honesty end time eschatology 00:14:10.88\00:14:14.29 the resurrection of the physical dead 00:14:14.32\00:14:16.96 when Jesus returns. 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.97 And thus, it's very significant in verse 24, 00:14:19.00\00:14:23.09 He says, "I tell you the truth," 00:14:23.12\00:14:24.59 this is the part the spiritually dead, 00:14:24.62\00:14:27.22 "whoever hears my words," present tense, 00:14:27.25\00:14:30.58 "and believes him who sent me," present tense, 00:14:30.61\00:14:34.22 "has", present tense, 00:14:34.25\00:14:36.89 "eternal life," present tense, 00:14:36.92\00:14:41.10 eternal life and will not be condemned 00:14:41.13\00:14:44.76 those in the end time judgment. 00:14:44.79\00:14:47.01 "He has", present tense, 00:14:47.04\00:14:49.21 "crossed over from death to life." 00:14:49.24\00:14:52.15 So there's a real resurrection that takes place 00:14:52.18\00:14:55.12 in the Gospel of John in the stories of Jesus. 00:14:55.15\00:14:58.87 This man the pool of Bethesda is an acted parable 00:14:58.90\00:15:05.27 not only of the resurrection at the end, 00:15:05.30\00:15:07.62 but he's particularly an acted parable the resurrection now. 00:15:07.65\00:15:11.40 He was raised from a paralyzed miserable life, 00:15:11.43\00:15:15.81 to a life of physical vigor and relationship with Jesus. 00:15:15.84\00:15:19.74 His whole life has turned around. 00:15:19.77\00:15:21.36 It's as if he was dead and has now come to life again. 00:15:21.39\00:15:26.64 So for John the greatest eschatology of all 00:15:26.67\00:15:31.06 is what happens right now in Jesus. 00:15:31.09\00:15:34.51 He has eternal life now. 00:15:34.54\00:15:36.60 He has passed over from death to life. 00:15:36.63\00:15:40.06 It's a present tense. 00:15:40.09\00:15:41.60 The spiritually dead can come alive in Jesus Christ now. 00:15:41.63\00:15:46.55 That's the special contribution 00:15:46.58\00:15:48.14 of the Gospel of John to eschatology. 00:15:48.17\00:15:51.59 And we're gonna continue 00:15:51.62\00:15:52.99 on this message of eschatology in the Book of John. 00:15:53.02\00:15:55.62 Because we need to compare 00:15:55.65\00:15:57.02 that with all the other types of eschatology 00:15:57.05\00:16:00.21 that come before it in the Bible. 00:16:00.24\00:16:02.80 Right, well, friends, stay with us. 00:16:02.83\00:16:04.61 After this break, we're gonna continue on the Gospel of John. 00:16:04.64\00:16:07.38
