And welcome back to this Bible study 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.27 of the Gospel of John with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:03.30\00:00:06.16 And, Dr. Paulien, you said 00:00:06.19\00:00:07.96 that there are three different types of faith 00:00:07.99\00:00:10.03 and I want to just review those again. 00:00:10.06\00:00:11.95 You said that the first one is an 'Inadequate Faith,' 00:00:11.98\00:00:14.56 which is an expression of faith, you know, 00:00:14.59\00:00:17.81 I say I believe or at least I acted or-- 00:00:17.84\00:00:20.29 But because it's focused on miracle, 00:00:20.32\00:00:22.74 it's really faith in a caricature 00:00:22.77\00:00:24.88 of what God is like. Right. 00:00:24.91\00:00:26.66 God is this kind of heavenly vending machine, 00:00:26.69\00:00:29.27 you know, you punch a button, you get the candy or-- 00:00:29.30\00:00:32.30 Well, this is not a Saving Faith. 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.06 Right. Because it does not, 00:00:34.09\00:00:36.36 it's not really directed to the true God. 00:00:36.39\00:00:38.48 Okay, the second type of faith is a 'Saving Faith,' 00:00:38.51\00:00:43.25 which is immature and shallow. 00:00:43.28\00:00:46.30 And the third type of faith is a 'Full Saving Faith,' 00:00:46.33\00:00:49.92 that's what you call it. Yeah. 00:00:49.95\00:00:51.32 Which includes the cross. 00:00:51.35\00:00:53.75 And the 'Full Saving Faith' comes to grasp that it's not, 00:00:53.78\00:00:57.99 you know, God is not about working miracles. 00:00:58.02\00:01:00.92 He is not about power and intimidation and so on. 00:01:00.95\00:01:04.68 But rather that God is all about the cross 00:01:04.71\00:01:09.43 that it's in self-sacrifice. 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.59 It's in weakness that true God is seen. 00:01:11.62\00:01:16.16 And when you have faith in that God 00:01:16.19\00:01:17.82 then our lives are ordered in a proper direction. 00:01:17.85\00:01:20.02 So which is out of these three-- which is the faith 00:01:20.05\00:01:23.24 that we ought to have? 00:01:23.27\00:01:24.64 Well, the goals very certainly is a rich, 00:01:24.67\00:01:27.64 full understanding, full-bodied faith. 00:01:27.67\00:01:30.66 But salvation often comes to people 00:01:30.69\00:01:33.39 who don't know everything. 00:01:33.42\00:01:34.80 They don't know much, they just know, 00:01:34.83\00:01:36.53 they hear the words of Jesus, they respond, they're in. 00:01:36.56\00:01:39.60 You don' t have to earn your way to Jesus, 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.94 so I got to develop faith here for the next three months, 00:01:41.97\00:01:44.57 then maybe I can dig in. 00:01:44.60\00:01:46.41 He accepts you when you enter, 00:01:46.44\00:01:48.24 but invites you to continue growing. 00:01:48.27\00:01:50.69 So the disciples at the wedding of Cana, 00:01:50.72\00:01:52.99 they see the water turned to wine and they're saying, 00:01:53.02\00:01:55.48 "Wow, Jesus is a miracle worker. 00:01:55.51\00:01:57.12 This is pretty cool. I want to follow Him." 00:01:57.15\00:01:59.36 And that's the right move to make, 00:01:59.39\00:02:01.93 but they still at this point, don't fully understand 00:02:01.96\00:02:04.57 the cross and the implications that the greatest glory of Jesus 00:02:04.60\00:02:08.80 is washing feet, you know, not beating up Romans. 00:02:08.83\00:02:11.35 Yeah, so this nobleman 00:02:11.38\00:02:13.12 comes to Jesus with an inadequate faith. 00:02:13.15\00:02:16.14 Yeah, his faith is just based on miracles. 00:02:16.17\00:02:18.70 He says, "Well, if Jesus heals my son 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.45 then maybe I'll believe in him." 00:02:20.48\00:02:22.57 But when he hears the words of Jesus, something changes. 00:02:22.60\00:02:25.38 And that faith changed. 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.19 He went back with a different faith. 00:02:27.22\00:02:28.59 He no longer needs to see the miracle. 00:02:28.62\00:02:30.44 He can even wander back the next day. 00:02:30.47\00:02:32.69 So he didn't have to see his child alive 00:02:32.72\00:02:35.06 and well in order for him to have that experience that, 00:02:35.09\00:02:40.00 what you call the 'Full Saving Faith.' 00:02:40.03\00:02:41.69 He knows that Jesus is who He is. 00:02:41.72\00:02:44.58 Quickly, how do I know 00:02:44.61\00:02:46.76 which faith do I-- which faith I have? 00:02:46.79\00:02:49.94 Can I know that? 00:02:49.97\00:02:52.05 That's an interesting and a very good question. 00:02:52.08\00:02:54.16 Because you see, this is John's expression, 00:02:54.19\00:02:56.76 these three types of faith. 00:02:56.79\00:02:59.13 Is that all there is to say about faith, perhaps not. 00:02:59.16\00:03:03.30 But I-- that's a good curveball to ask 00:03:03.33\00:03:09.35 because it gets down to a very individual thing. 00:03:09.38\00:03:12.11 How do I know that I'm right with God? 00:03:12.14\00:03:15.19 And I guess at the bottom-line is to question. 00:03:15.22\00:03:18.77 Are you willing to accept Him? 00:03:18.80\00:03:21.58 No matter what the price, no matter 00:03:21.61\00:03:23.12 what the cross would say, anything in your life 00:03:23.15\00:03:25.24 that you would hang on to rather than grasp on to Him. 00:03:25.27\00:03:29.93 And I think 'Saving Faith' happens 00:03:29.96\00:03:32.31 when we say, "I don't care this, that. 00:03:32.34\00:03:35.68 I don't care if I lose my job. 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.42 I don't care, you know, if I lose my life, 00:03:37.45\00:03:40.07 my reputation or anything. 00:03:40.10\00:03:41.54 I want what God has. 00:03:41.57\00:03:43.35 And I think that is 'Saving Faith.' 00:03:43.38\00:03:45.62 If there's anything inside of us that's holding back 00:03:45.65\00:03:49.04 then it's some of this more shallow, 00:03:49.07\00:03:50.71 more inadequate faith, I would say. 00:03:50.74\00:03:53.89 And another thing is that faith is not a permanent thing, 00:03:53.92\00:03:57.83 meaning that, I can have 00:03:57.86\00:03:59.40 'Full Saving Faith' today, 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.50 but tomorrow I might not have it. 00:04:01.53\00:04:04.22 Well, that's a very interesting point. 00:04:04.25\00:04:06.66 And John definitely speaks directly to that. 00:04:06.69\00:04:09.78 Because in the Gospel of John, faith is never a noun, 00:04:09.81\00:04:15.79 it's always a verb, and it's a continuous verb. 00:04:15.82\00:04:19.96 So faith isn't something, you know, 00:04:19.99\00:04:22.07 that you kind of throw at God. 00:04:22.10\00:04:23.62 Okay, here, have my faith, you know. 00:04:23.65\00:04:25.85 Faith rather is a settled way of life. 00:04:25.88\00:04:30.89 And the real definition of faith is trust. 00:04:30.92\00:04:34.85 Do you trust God to do for you 00:04:34.88\00:04:37.66 what you can't do it for yourself? 00:04:37.69\00:04:39.98 That's the core what faith is all about? 00:04:40.01\00:04:42.18 And trust really is a verb. 00:04:42.21\00:04:44.93 It's a relationship. 00:04:44.96\00:04:46.45 It's an ongoing thing. 00:04:46.48\00:04:47.85 So John is not seeing faith as an idea, 00:04:47.88\00:04:51.04 he is not seeing faith as a onetime act. 00:04:51.07\00:04:53.49 You know, I had faith. 00:04:53.52\00:04:54.89 I know I'm saved now, you see. 00:04:54.92\00:04:56.98 But no, faith is a continual walking 00:04:57.01\00:04:59.92 in relationship with God. 00:04:59.95\00:05:01.32 A continual believing 00:05:01.35\00:05:02.72 that He can do everything that you need. 00:05:02.75\00:05:05.55 So for John, it's active. 00:05:05.58\00:05:07.31 It isn't just a onetime thing. 00:05:07.34\00:05:10.74 Well, we also are going to talk about another miracle. 00:05:10.77\00:05:13.83 Pool of Bethesda? All right. 00:05:13.86\00:05:15.53 That's right. And we are in--again, 00:05:15.56\00:05:17.09 we are in chapter 4 of the Gospel of John 00:05:17.12\00:05:19.21 and we are picking up in, which verses now? 00:05:19.24\00:05:21.92 I think now we move to chapter 5. 00:05:21.95\00:05:23.69 Oh, we are in chapter 5. 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.09 And we get to the very first verse. 00:05:25.12\00:05:26.49 And we are in verse 1. So we'll make that clear. 00:05:26.52\00:05:27.89 Thank you. After this, shall we read then? 00:05:27.92\00:05:31.10 Sure, go ahead. 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.50 "After this there was a feast of the Jews 00:05:32.53\00:05:34.17 and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.68 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, 00:05:36.71\00:05:40.42 which is called in Hebrew, 00:05:40.45\00:05:41.82 Bethesda, having five porches." 00:05:41.85\00:05:44.37 Why don't you stop there for a second? Okay. 00:05:44.40\00:05:46.84 So scholars doubted John for a long time 00:05:46.87\00:05:52.08 because they know where the sheep gate is. 00:05:52.11\00:05:55.66 There is no pool, you see. 00:05:55.69\00:05:57.75 So, how could this great big thing be here 00:05:57.78\00:06:01.38 and we don't know about it? 00:06:01.41\00:06:02.88 So scholars kind of doubted, but the gospel said 00:06:02.91\00:06:05.64 it was there, and eventually the archeologists found it, 00:06:05.67\00:06:08.54 underneath the neighborhoods and all that, 00:06:08.57\00:06:10.47 somebody came to discover. 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.33 Yes, there was once a great pool down here. 00:06:12.36\00:06:14.81 There is even a church built over 00:06:14.84\00:06:17.17 at a few centuries later to commemorate that. 00:06:17.20\00:06:19.55 You can go visit it today. 00:06:19.58\00:06:21.46 It's like, 100 meters long, 70 meters wide, 00:06:21.49\00:06:24.53 40 feet, you know, 12 meters deep. 00:06:24.56\00:06:28.22 I mean, this is huge, and it has 5 porches. 00:06:28.25\00:06:31.60 It's kind of like a figure 8. 00:06:31.63\00:06:33.64 So you have porches on the four sides 00:06:33.67\00:06:35.44 and then down the middle it was separated into two pools. 00:06:35.47\00:06:38.51 So today we know that the Gospel of John 00:06:38.54\00:06:41.25 was grounded on accurate reality. 00:06:41.28\00:06:44.38 And the name of this place is Bethesda, 00:06:44.41\00:06:47.63 which means, 'House of Mercy.' 00:06:47.66\00:06:50.38 It was kind of like an ancient hospital. So read on. 00:06:50.41\00:06:54.48 "In these lay a great multitude 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.28 of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.48 waiting for the moving of the water. 00:06:59.51\00:07:02.06 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool, 00:07:02.09\00:07:05.19 and stirred up the water then whoever stepped in first 00:07:05.22\00:07:08.71 after the stirring of the water 00:07:08.74\00:07:11.23 was made well of whatever disease he had. 00:07:11.26\00:07:15.14 Now certain man was there, 00:07:15.17\00:07:16.54 who had an infirmity thirty eight years? 00:07:16.57\00:07:20.22 When Jesus saw him lying there, and He knew that he had, 00:07:20.25\00:07:23.10 he had already been in that condition a long time. 00:07:23.13\00:07:26.67 He said to him, 'Do you want to be made well?' 00:07:26.70\00:07:30.03 The sick man answered him, 00:07:30.06\00:07:31.43 'Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool 00:07:31.46\00:07:34.69 whenever the water is stirred up, 00:07:34.72\00:07:37.46 but while I am coming, another steps down before me.' 00:07:37.49\00:07:41.33 Jesus said to him, 'Rise, take up your bed, and walk.' 00:07:41.36\00:07:46.29 And immediately the man was made well, 00:07:46.32\00:07:48.03 took up his bed, and walked 00:07:48.06\00:07:50.34 and that day was the Sabbath." 00:07:50.37\00:07:53.94 Okay. So here's this crowd of people around the pool. 00:07:53.97\00:07:58.25 It's kind of an ancient hospital 00:07:58.28\00:08:00.18 with an interesting type of triage. 00:08:00.21\00:08:03.44 It's the least sick person that gets helped first, 00:08:03.47\00:08:06.44 you know, and this guy has been paralyzed. 00:08:06.47\00:08:07.88 He had been there 38 years, 00:08:07.91\00:08:09.37 found no mercy at the House of Mercy. 00:08:09.40\00:08:13.17 Jesus comes in, picks a man out of the crowd. 00:08:13.20\00:08:17.52 This man doesn't know Him, this man doesn't express 00:08:17.55\00:08:21.96 any faith in Him, and Jesus heals him. 00:08:21.99\00:08:25.43 It's a pure act of grace. 00:08:25.46\00:08:28.57 And, you know, I've experienced that from time to time. 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.92 You wake up one day and just realize, 00:08:31.95\00:08:33.64 "Hey, God has touched me. 00:08:33.67\00:08:36.13 My life is different." 00:08:36.16\00:08:37.53 That's kind of what happened on this day. 00:08:37.56\00:08:39.72 And it's the Sabbath day and Jesus seems 00:08:39.75\00:08:42.54 to deliberately in the Gospel of John 00:08:42.57\00:08:44.87 heal on the Sabbath day almost to make a point 00:08:44.90\00:08:49.80 that the Sabbath day is there for doing good. 00:08:49.83\00:08:53.16 Now continue reading up through verse 15. 00:08:53.19\00:08:56.83 "The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, 00:08:56.86\00:08:59.34 it is the Sabbath, it is not lawful 00:08:59.37\00:09:01.16 for you to carry your bed. 00:09:01.19\00:09:03.02 He answered them, 'He who made me well, 00:09:03.05\00:09:05.25 said to me, Take up your bed, and walk.' 00:09:05.28\00:09:08.24 Then they asked him, 'Who was the man 00:09:08.27\00:09:10.03 who said to you, take up your bed, and walk?' 00:09:10.06\00:09:12.77 But though-- but the one who was healed 00:09:12.80\00:09:15.10 did not know who it was for Jesus had withdrawn 00:09:15.13\00:09:18.88 a multitude being in that place.' 00:09:18.91\00:09:21.15 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, 00:09:21.18\00:09:23.70 and said to him, 'See, you have been made well, 00:09:23.73\00:09:27.16 sin no more, lest the worse thing come upon you.' 00:09:27.19\00:09:30.68 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, 00:09:30.71\00:09:33.81 who had made him well." 00:09:33.84\00:09:35.88 I want to focus in on verse 14 here 00:09:35.91\00:09:38.40 because it says something very powerful. 00:09:38.43\00:09:40.97 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, 00:09:41.00\00:09:43.15 "See, you are well again, stop sinning 00:09:43.18\00:09:46.32 or something worse may happen to you." 00:09:46.35\00:09:48.19 Now English translation can't always pick up on this. 00:09:48.22\00:09:51.80 But there are two ways in Greek to say the 'stop sinning' 00:09:51.83\00:09:55.70 or as your translation said 'sin no more.' 00:09:55.73\00:09:58.75 One is the 'Aorist Subjunctive' which basically means, 00:09:58.78\00:10:01.22 don't even think about it. 00:10:01.25\00:10:02.95 You're not there, but don't start, okay. 00:10:02.98\00:10:05.87 The other is the imperative present tense, 00:10:05.90\00:10:10.06 present imperative, which is continuous, 00:10:10.09\00:10:13.33 stop what you're doing and what you have been doing 00:10:13.36\00:10:16.53 these last 38 years, you see. 00:10:16.56\00:10:19.21 So this man has been sinning for 38 years. 00:10:19.24\00:10:23.45 How does a paralyzed man sin? 00:10:23.48\00:10:25.93 Can he rob a bank? No. 00:10:25.96\00:10:27.63 No. Can he commit rape? 00:10:27.66\00:10:32.52 Would he even be accused of that? 00:10:32.55\00:10:34.18 No, probably not. 00:10:34.21\00:10:36.05 Can he kill people? No. 00:10:36.08\00:10:38.93 So, how does he sin? 00:10:38.96\00:10:40.33 It's in the mind, you see. 00:10:40.36\00:10:42.78 And here's the interesting thing. 00:10:42.81\00:10:44.27 Jesus heals his body, but invites him to enter 00:10:44.30\00:10:49.39 into relationship a process to heal the mental, 00:10:49.42\00:10:52.28 the emotional, and the rest of that. 00:10:52.31\00:10:55.28 And so the idea of emotional healing 00:10:55.31\00:10:57.61 is an important piece of this. 00:10:57.64\00:10:59.53 And Jesus invites us into relationship 00:10:59.56\00:11:02.13 to deal with the whole thing. 00:11:02.16\00:11:03.94 And here a person then can be physically healthy, 00:11:03.97\00:11:08.35 but spiritually unhealthy. 00:11:08.38\00:11:10.81 And here's a key lesson out of this, 00:11:10.84\00:11:12.96 Dr. Paulien, that God is looking to heal us spiritually. 00:11:12.99\00:11:18.80 He wants to search our hearts 00:11:18.83\00:11:20.43 and cleanse us from any unrighteousness, 00:11:20.46\00:11:22.82 any impurities that we might have. 00:11:22.85\00:11:24.62 Well, friends, thank you for joining us, 00:11:24.65\00:11:26.16 and we'll see you next time. 00:11:26.19\00:11:27.78
