Hello, friends, and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.99\00:00:23.66 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez 00:00:23.69\00:00:25.06 and I'm so pleased 00:00:25.09\00:00:26.46 that you're able to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.66 And I am with Dr. Jon Paulien. He is a Bible scholar. 00:00:28.69\00:00:32.79 He is the dean of Religion at Loma Linda University 00:00:32.82\00:00:36.85 in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:36.88\00:00:38.91 And, Dr. Paulien, we're talking about the Gospel of John 00:00:38.94\00:00:44.14 and you've written three books on John. 00:00:44.17\00:00:48.32 Tell us about those three books? 00:00:48.35\00:00:50.93 Well, almost 20 years ago, 00:00:50.96\00:00:52.95 I was asked to participate in a Bible commentary series, 00:00:52.98\00:00:57.01 it was called the "Bible Amplifier." 00:00:57.04\00:00:59.10 And one of the purposes of those series 00:00:59.13\00:01:01.94 was kind of a study guides, 00:01:01.97\00:01:03.45 you know, it would have questions 00:01:03.48\00:01:05.50 to get people studying into the book 00:01:05.53\00:01:07.75 and then at the end reflection questions 00:01:07.78\00:01:09.82 and then, you know, I would say some of the things 00:01:09.85\00:01:12.68 that I was seeing in there. 00:01:12.71\00:01:15.00 That triggered interest and about 10 years later 00:01:15.03\00:01:18.96 I wrote an Adult Bible Study Guide 00:01:18.99\00:01:21.35 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:21.38\00:01:23.14 and that was distributed in 18 languages, 00:01:23.17\00:01:26.30 about 15 million copies. 00:01:26.33\00:01:28.97 So that was-- 00:01:29.00\00:01:30.37 Which is known as the "The Sabbath Quarterly?" 00:01:30.40\00:01:32.87 Yeah, "The Sabbath School Lesson." 00:01:32.90\00:01:34.29 "Sabbath School Lesson." This way it's often refer to. 00:01:34.32\00:01:37.34 And along with that, I published a book 00:01:37.37\00:01:41.12 that gave additional information 00:01:41.15\00:01:43.65 and told some stories to go with the lessons, 00:01:43.68\00:01:48.91 so people could read one chapter every week 00:01:48.94\00:01:51.27 as they were studying the lesson 00:01:51.30\00:01:52.88 and be more prepared to discuss. 00:01:52.91\00:01:55.01 Right. And you've not only written three books, 00:01:55.04\00:01:58.59 but you've also written more books as well, 00:01:58.62\00:02:00.72 and we're just talking about 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.12 those three in the Gospel of John, right? 00:02:02.15\00:02:05.74 Yeah. And well, what are we talking about today? 00:02:05.77\00:02:09.12 Well, we are going into the last part of chapter 4 00:02:09.15\00:02:11.73 and the first part of the chapter 5. 00:02:11.76\00:02:13.29 There's two stories here. 00:02:13.32\00:02:14.94 And of course, in John, 00:02:14.97\00:02:16.34 stories always have mean a little bit more sometimes 00:02:16.37\00:02:18.80 than what they seemed on the surface. 00:02:18.83\00:02:21.57 But the reason we're packaging these two together 00:02:21.60\00:02:24.79 is because they fit a nice slot for a program 00:02:24.82\00:02:28.63 and it lets us cover the last part of chapter 5 00:02:28.66\00:02:31.80 in a separate program where which I think 00:02:31.83\00:02:34.02 it really needs to happen. 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.07 So otherwise we could have separated these two stories. 00:02:36.10\00:02:40.28 But in John, you have this dual directional kind of thing going, 00:02:40.31\00:02:44.29 so the last story in chapter 4 is connected with chapter 5, 00:02:44.32\00:02:49.17 and also with what precedes. 00:02:49.20\00:02:51.54 But the introduction to this, 00:02:51.57\00:02:54.15 right after the Samaritan woman is in 4:43-45. 00:02:54.18\00:02:59.69 So if you're ready, why don't we take a look at that? 00:02:59.72\00:03:02.15 And well for those of us 00:03:02.18\00:03:04.09 or for those who are watching, 00:03:04.12\00:03:05.49 who would like to join us in this Bible study, 00:03:05.52\00:03:07.40 you can pick up your Bible and open it, 00:03:07.43\00:03:10.19 and again we are in chapter 4, 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.08 and you said we are reading verse-- 00:03:13.11\00:03:15.40 43-45. 43-45, and it says, 00:03:15.43\00:03:19.65 "Now after the two days he departed from there, 00:03:19.68\00:03:22.06 and went to Galilee. 00:03:22.09\00:03:23.57 For Jesus Himself testified 00:03:23.60\00:03:25.35 that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 00:03:25.38\00:03:29.88 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, 00:03:29.91\00:03:33.38 having seen all things 00:03:33.41\00:03:34.78 He did in Jerusalem at the feast 00:03:34.81\00:03:37.22 for they also had gone to the feast." 00:03:37.25\00:03:41.63 There is an interesting contradiction it seems in this. 00:03:41.66\00:03:46.60 First of all, He is in Samaria 00:03:46.63\00:03:48.30 and then He goes to Galilee 00:03:48.33\00:03:50.24 after He spent that couple of days 00:03:50.27\00:03:51.82 in the town of drunkenness, 00:03:51.85\00:03:53.75 so He goes to Galilee, and what is Galilee? 00:03:53.78\00:03:56.98 That's His home. 00:03:57.01\00:03:58.38 Nazareth is where He grew up. 00:03:58.41\00:03:59.81 Capernaum is where He is living. 00:03:59.84\00:04:01.85 So He is going home. 00:04:01.88\00:04:04.34 And as He is going home, He says, 00:04:04.37\00:04:07.10 "A prophet has no honor in his own country." 00:04:07.13\00:04:11.91 And then it says, when He arrives, 00:04:11.94\00:04:13.88 the Galileans welcomed Him gladly 00:04:13.91\00:04:16.94 because they saw the things 00:04:16.97\00:04:18.34 that He had done in Jerusalem. 00:04:18.37\00:04:21.09 So what do you make of that? 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.08 Why does Jesus say it's a lousy welcome? 00:04:23.11\00:04:25.61 And yet they welcomed Him gladly. 00:04:25.64\00:04:29.33 Because it seems that they needed 00:04:29.36\00:04:31.32 to see some evidence or some miracles 00:04:31.35\00:04:33.87 before they accepted Him as a prophet. 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.20 So the welcome that they give is grounded in the miracles 00:04:36.23\00:04:39.54 they saw in Jerusalem. 00:04:39.57\00:04:40.94 Right. So they're kind of the counterpart of Nicodemus again. 00:04:40.97\00:04:44.47 These Galileans have this inadequate faith in Jesus, 00:04:44.50\00:04:48.60 it's based on the miracles 00:04:48.63\00:04:50.00 He did in Jerusalem just as Nicodemus based His faith 00:04:50.03\00:04:54.03 on those miracles in Jerusalem. 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.72 So here He makes a statement about faith. 00:04:56.75\00:05:02.07 The Galileans have faith. 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.60 They believe in Jesus, they welcomed Him, 00:05:03.63\00:05:05.52 they receive Him gladly. 00:05:05.55\00:05:07.54 And once again He doesn't trust Himself to them. 00:05:07.57\00:05:11.04 Now in the Gospel of John, it seems like, 00:05:11.07\00:05:14.17 whenever He makes a statement like this, 00:05:14.20\00:05:15.93 He'll follow with a story that acts out that very thing. 00:05:15.96\00:05:20.51 In the story that follows, there is a Galilean 00:05:20.54\00:05:24.91 who comes to Jesus and who has imperfect faith. 00:05:24.94\00:05:31.27 And let's see what happens in that story. 00:05:31.30\00:05:34.57 And we are in verse? Verse 46-48. 00:05:34.60\00:05:37.67 I think as far as we want to go right now. 00:05:37.70\00:05:39.95 "So Jesus came to Cana of Galilee 00:05:39.98\00:05:42.36 where he had made the water wine. 00:05:42.39\00:05:44.66 And there was a certain nobleman 00:05:44.69\00:05:46.19 whose son was sick at Capernaum. 00:05:46.22\00:05:48.58 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, 00:05:48.61\00:05:52.04 he went to him, and imploded him to come down, 00:05:52.07\00:05:55.10 and heal his son for he was at the point of death. 00:05:55.13\00:05:59.09 Then said Jesus unto him, 00:05:59.12\00:06:00.97 'Unless you people see signs and wonders, 00:06:01.00\00:06:03.31 you will by no means believe.'" 00:06:03.34\00:06:05.71 So now Jesus reveals clearly what His reluctance is. 00:06:05.74\00:06:09.56 The excitement of the Galileans is based on His miracles. 00:06:09.59\00:06:13.41 They're based on the mighty things that He has done. 00:06:13.44\00:06:17.01 And that's never in the Gospel of John, 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.47 a strong basis for genuine faith. 00:06:19.50\00:06:22.50 If it were the key, then the second generation 00:06:22.53\00:06:25.62 would be in a trouble 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.35 'cause the second generation doesn't see Jesus, 00:06:27.38\00:06:29.70 doesn't hear Him, doesn't touch Him. 00:06:29.73\00:06:32.43 And so, how's the second generation gonna come to faith, 00:06:32.46\00:06:35.31 if it's got to depend on miracles. 00:06:35.34\00:06:37.91 And so, Jesus says, "You Galileans." 00:06:37.94\00:06:40.90 He says, "Unless you see signs and wonders, 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.89 you will never believe." 00:06:42.92\00:06:44.84 Now this man is from Capernaum. 00:06:44.87\00:06:48.67 So that's Jesus' hometown. 00:06:48.70\00:06:50.49 And I've been to Capernaum, 00:06:50.52\00:06:52.78 and it's probably about the size 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.70 of a par-three hole in the golf course. 00:06:54.73\00:06:57.57 I mean, it's not a big town at all. 00:06:57.60\00:07:00.50 Yeah, maybe it had at the most a thousand people 00:07:00.53\00:07:03.34 and may be just a few hundred. 00:07:03.37\00:07:05.21 So the odds are, this man knew Jesus pretty well. 00:07:05.24\00:07:09.94 He was quite familiar with Him. 00:07:09.97\00:07:11.83 Now this story is also told in the Synoptic Gospels, 00:07:11.86\00:07:15.38 Mathew, Mark, and Luke. 00:07:15.41\00:07:16.80 And in the Synoptic Gospels, He is a Gentile. 00:07:16.83\00:07:19.88 So if this is a Gentile nobleman, 00:07:19.91\00:07:22.37 he kind of completes this tri-factor. 00:07:22.40\00:07:24.74 You have a Jew, you have a Samaritan, 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.89 and now you have a Gentile. 00:07:26.92\00:07:29.05 And all of them are engaging with Jesus 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.49 in one way or another. 00:07:32.52\00:07:34.64 So this man is hesitant 00:07:34.67\00:07:39.62 to really believe in Jesus. 00:07:39.65\00:07:42.89 He tries to hide it, but Jesus sees right through him. 00:07:42.92\00:07:46.07 And so once again Jesus knows. 00:07:46.10\00:07:49.72 You know, in the Gospel of John, 00:07:49.75\00:07:51.17 one of the great themes that's always there is Jesus knows. 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.92 You can't fool Him. He knows what's inside a person's heart. 00:07:53.95\00:07:57.80 You can come to Him and express faith like Nicodemus did. 00:07:57.83\00:08:01.48 You can express knowledge like the Samaritan woman did. 00:08:01.51\00:08:04.64 You can come to Him and say, 00:08:04.67\00:08:06.04 "I know that you can heal my son." 00:08:06.07\00:08:07.51 Jesus sees right through it. 00:08:07.54\00:08:09.32 No sense hiding in front of Jesus. 00:08:09.35\00:08:12.21 You only make a fool of yourself, 00:08:12.24\00:08:14.33 is what seems to be going on here. 00:08:14.36\00:08:16.79 So interestingly enough, this man lived with Jesus. 00:08:16.82\00:08:21.83 So what does that tell us? 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.02 The physical presence of Jesus is really no help to faith. 00:08:24.05\00:08:29.90 Again, it comes back to this overarching message of John. 00:08:29.93\00:08:33.59 John has written to people 00:08:33.62\00:08:35.00 who were losing all connection with Jesus 00:08:35.03\00:08:38.24 in any physical or direct sense. 00:08:38.27\00:08:40.64 And instead they must rely on the testimony of the disciples. 00:08:40.67\00:08:45.92 They must rely on the Holy Spirit. 00:08:45.95\00:08:47.99 And John's message is, 00:08:48.02\00:08:49.39 look when people had the living presence of Jesus, 00:08:49.42\00:08:52.38 they often didn't believe. 00:08:52.41\00:08:54.72 So what we have here is an acted parable. 00:08:54.75\00:08:59.76 Jesus has no honor in His hometown. 00:08:59.79\00:09:02.87 Even though, the people are honoring Him with their lips. 00:09:02.90\00:09:06.05 They're not honoring Him 00:09:06.08\00:09:07.58 with their genuine inner faith and actions, so-- 00:09:07.61\00:09:12.71 So in verse 48, Jesus says, 00:09:15.71\00:09:19.05 "Unless you see miracles, 00:09:19.08\00:09:20.45 signs and wonders, you will never believe--" 00:09:20.48\00:09:25.80 The signs, you know, are intended to faith. 00:09:25.83\00:09:31.06 I mean, Jesus does these spectacular things. 00:09:31.09\00:09:32.99 Signs are supposed to say, this is a prophet, 00:09:33.02\00:09:34.77 this is truly a man of God, okay. 00:09:34.80\00:09:37.96 But in practice, most of the time 00:09:37.99\00:09:39.69 they produced this shallow inadequate faith. 00:09:39.72\00:09:44.83 Now, why would you say this person doesn't have true faith, 00:09:44.86\00:09:50.80 even though he expresses it? 00:09:50.83\00:09:53.02 Because he is going there to meet Jesus, 00:09:53.05\00:09:57.58 to bring Jesus back and heal his son. 00:09:57.61\00:10:01.33 He believes that the only way his son can be healed is, 00:10:01.36\00:10:05.18 if Jesus walks down that trail with him, 00:10:05.21\00:10:08.21 goes all the way to his house, 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.95 puts His hand on him and raises him up. 00:10:09.98\00:10:13.23 He doesn't believe that Jesus can heal him at a distance. 00:10:13.26\00:10:17.45 And he isn't believing enough, you said, he believed. So-- 00:10:17.48\00:10:22.83 But there's three times-- three kinds of faiths. 00:10:22.86\00:10:25.87 There is this inadequate faith, that's just based on miracles. 00:10:25.90\00:10:29.85 There's an early immature faith, 00:10:29.88\00:10:33.33 which is genuine, but not complete. 00:10:33.36\00:10:36.79 And then there's a lasting, faith that cannot be shaken. 00:10:36.82\00:10:41.95 So you've three different types of faith. 00:10:41.98\00:10:44.12 And here you have an acted parable 00:10:44.15\00:10:47.07 of what that inadequate faith is like, 00:10:47.10\00:10:49.17 just as it was with Nicodemus. 00:10:49.20\00:10:51.24 So we have another poster child for inadequate faith, 00:10:51.27\00:10:54.21 but here is a difference. 00:10:54.24\00:10:55.81 Nicodemus is not portrayed as changing his mind, 00:10:55.84\00:10:59.15 at least in chapter 3, maybe later on he does. 00:10:59.18\00:11:02.48 But in chapter 3, the story ends with him 00:11:02.51\00:11:05.33 still in that same limbo kind of position. 00:11:05.36\00:11:09.11 But this royal official changes and it's crucial to understand. 00:11:09.14\00:11:14.05 How far apart are these two towns? 00:11:14.08\00:11:16.62 Jesus is in Cana again where the wedding took place. 00:11:16.65\00:11:20.42 This other man comes from Capernaum. 00:11:20.45\00:11:23.17 Capernaum is on the shore of Sea of Galilee. 00:11:23.20\00:11:26.00 Cana and Nazareth are up on the mountains. 00:11:26.03\00:11:28.73 It's 16 miles, 25 kilometers from Capernaum 00:11:28.76\00:11:34.76 all the way up to Cana. 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.54 It's about 1,700 feet, more than 500 meters 00:11:36.57\00:11:40.94 from below sea level up to this hill top over here. 00:11:40.97\00:11:44.99 So he goes 16 miles, he climbs all that way, 00:11:45.02\00:11:49.08 he is going uphill, 00:11:49.11\00:11:50.79 and he gets to Jesus at around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. 00:11:50.82\00:11:55.59 It's just after-- after the noon hour. 00:11:55.62\00:11:58.87 And he is hoping, Jesus will come back 00:11:58.90\00:12:00.94 that day and heal his son. 00:12:00.97\00:12:05.07 So let's see, what goes on here. Verses 49 and 50. 00:12:05.10\00:12:10.28 "The nobleman said to Him, 00:12:10.31\00:12:11.68 'Sir, comedown before my child dies.' 00:12:11.71\00:12:14.85 Jesus said to him, 'Go your way, your son lives.' 00:12:14.88\00:12:18.23 So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him 00:12:18.26\00:12:22.28 and he went his way." 00:12:22.31\00:12:23.86 Ah, you see, the difference 00:12:23.89\00:12:26.71 is this man comes to believe, to true belief. 00:12:26.74\00:12:31.47 Does he come to believe 00:12:31.50\00:12:32.87 because Jesus goes down the hill and heals his son? 00:12:32.90\00:12:37.18 No. He comes to believe before he can verify the miracle. 00:12:37.21\00:12:43.51 In other words, it's not a miracle 00:12:43.54\00:12:45.39 that changes his mind. 00:12:45.42\00:12:46.79 It's the word of Jesus. 00:12:46.82\00:12:49.10 And John is telling us something very important. 00:12:49.13\00:12:51.56 You don't need the physical presence of Jesus 00:12:51.59\00:12:54.11 to have everything that He offers. 00:12:54.14\00:12:56.23 You don't need to see miracles to have faith, 00:12:56.26\00:13:01.43 but instead the Holy Spirit 00:13:01.46\00:13:03.48 working with the words of Jesus has the power 00:13:03.51\00:13:05.97 to build in you the faith that really matters. 00:13:06.00\00:13:10.09 And this man in order to believe, 00:13:10.12\00:13:12.07 it seems that he needed the affirmation from Jesus 00:13:12.10\00:13:16.04 that his son would be healed, 00:13:16.07\00:13:18.57 but had he not heard of Jesus' words, 00:13:18.60\00:13:23.62 "Go your way, your son lives." 00:13:23.65\00:13:26.40 Would he have somehow believed anyway? 00:13:26.43\00:13:29.37 Maybe not. Maybe not. 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.79 Because in John, faith is always generated 00:13:31.82\00:13:35.49 by the words of Jesus, 00:13:35.52\00:13:37.53 and when he hears the words of Jesus, 00:13:37.56\00:13:39.41 the Holy Spirit ministers those words to his heart 00:13:39.44\00:13:41.88 and he says, "Okay, I believe." 00:13:41.91\00:13:44.46 And then he starts heading down the hill without Jesus. 00:13:44.49\00:13:49.96 And the very leaving of Jesus 00:13:49.99\00:13:52.92 is evidence of his faith at this point. 00:13:52.95\00:13:56.20 So he is a representative character just like, 00:13:56.23\00:14:00.98 Nicodemus represented the Jews 00:14:01.01\00:14:02.91 and this Samaritan woman to Samaritans. 00:14:02.94\00:14:04.97 He represents the second generation 00:14:05.00\00:14:07.61 as well as the Gentiles. 00:14:07.64\00:14:09.15 He is somebody who comes to faith through the word, 00:14:09.18\00:14:13.23 not through the miracle 00:14:13.26\00:14:14.63 and not through the physical presence of Jesus. 00:14:14.66\00:14:16.92 So the words of Jesus are as great 00:14:16.95\00:14:21.91 or if not greater than the miracles themselves. 00:14:21.94\00:14:25.76 Jesus' word is as powerful as His presence. 00:14:25.79\00:14:29.26 In fact, in this case it seems like 00:14:29.29\00:14:30.92 it's even more powerful 00:14:30.95\00:14:32.81 because His presence the man didn't have faith. 00:14:32.84\00:14:35.95 It was only when he hears the word that he has faith. 00:14:35.98\00:14:38.82 Now does he really believe? Verses 51 to 53. 00:14:38.85\00:14:44.24 "While, he was still in the way." 00:14:44.27\00:14:47.43 Right? 16 miles. 00:14:47.46\00:14:49.59 "If you came uphill 16 miles and got there at 1 o'clock, 00:14:49.62\00:14:55.00 do you think you could get home going downhill 00:14:55.03\00:14:57.49 if you're excited to find out whether you son was healed?" 00:14:57.52\00:15:00.48 Probably. Yeah. 00:15:00.51\00:15:01.88 Okay, notice what happens. 00:15:01.91\00:15:03.32 "While he was still on the way, 00:15:03.35\00:15:06.11 his servants met him with the news 00:15:06.14\00:15:07.60 that his boy was living. 00:15:07.63\00:15:09.48 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, 00:15:09.51\00:15:12.45 they said to him, 00:15:12.48\00:15:13.85 the fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." 00:15:13.88\00:15:18.17 Then the father realized this was the exact time 00:15:18.20\00:15:21.02 which Jesus had said to him. 00:15:21.05\00:15:22.89 "Your son would live." 00:15:22.92\00:15:25.02 You see, sometime the next day, 00:15:25.05\00:15:27.02 he is still wandering out there. 00:15:27.05\00:15:29.28 He took the scenic route home. 00:15:29.31\00:15:31.27 He stopped and smelled the flowers. 00:15:31.30\00:15:32.90 He helped somebody change a wheel on his wagon. 00:15:32.93\00:15:36.13 He knew that Jesus' word was as good as healing itself. 00:15:36.16\00:15:41.79 And he wasn't surprised to come home and find out. 00:15:41.82\00:15:44.40 Yeah, his son was healed 00:15:44.43\00:15:45.80 at the very moment that Jesus spoke. 00:15:45.83\00:15:47.73 Well, Dr. Paulien, we're gonna be 00:15:47.76\00:15:49.23 talking more about the words of Jesus 00:15:49.26\00:15:51.18 and how they are as powerful as His miracles. 00:15:51.21\00:15:53.70 So stay with us, friends, 00:15:53.73\00:15:55.10 as we continue to study the Gospel of John. 00:15:55.13\00:15:57.46
