And we're back and we're talking about the Samaritan woman 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.39 and with me is Dr. Jon Paulien 00:00:04.42\00:00:06.95 and we're talking about this satisfying water 00:00:06.98\00:00:10.01 and Jesus was saying 00:00:10.04\00:00:11.41 that whoever drinks of this water will thirst again. 00:00:11.44\00:00:14.68 And by the way we've some water here. 00:00:14.71\00:00:16.91 Water is good. I mean this is real water. 00:00:16.94\00:00:21.03 Now this water is satisfying. It is. 00:00:21.06\00:00:23.11 Especially when you're very thirsty. 00:00:23.14\00:00:24.59 It's very good, But you know what, 00:00:24.62\00:00:26.00 three hours from now we're gonna need some more. 00:00:26.03\00:00:28.16 So tell us about this satisfying water 00:00:28.19\00:00:31.20 then that we'll never thirst again. 00:00:31.23\00:00:32.81 What's Jesus doing here? 00:00:32.84\00:00:34.40 Yeah, I mean, water is really good, we need it. 00:00:34.43\00:00:37.11 You see but there's something 00:00:37.14\00:00:39.47 even more satisfying that He's offering. 00:00:39.50\00:00:42.12 And perhaps the way to illustrate this. 00:00:42.15\00:00:44.30 You know, you go to a young person and you say, 00:00:44.33\00:00:46.40 you know, how come you not going to church? 00:00:46.43\00:00:48.54 And they might say well, I want to have fun. 00:00:48.57\00:00:51.89 Your church isn't fun and to be honest 00:00:51.92\00:00:54.80 church often isn't fun, you know. 00:00:54.83\00:00:56.92 So you said to them, well, where do you have fun? 00:00:56.95\00:00:58.69 Oh, I go to the club. 00:00:58.72\00:01:00.09 Oh, so when you're in the club, are you having fun? 00:01:00.12\00:01:02.10 Yeah, I'm having fun. 00:01:02.13\00:01:04.00 What happens when you leave the club? 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.21 Well, the fun stops. 00:01:06.24\00:01:08.70 You see so fun is what happens when you're having it 00:01:08.73\00:01:12.58 and when you're not having it, 00:01:12.61\00:01:13.98 it doesn't impact the rest of your life. 00:01:14.01\00:01:15.98 It's just something you do that's a piece of your life. 00:01:16.01\00:01:18.89 But joy is something that last 00:01:18.92\00:01:23.44 through everything, even suffering. 00:01:23.47\00:01:25.83 You can have joy even in suffering. 00:01:25.86\00:01:27.80 In other words there is a satisfaction 00:01:27.83\00:01:30.19 that doesn't end when you leave the club 00:01:30.22\00:01:33.43 or when you leave wherever you're having fun, 00:01:33.46\00:01:36.00 when you're no longer at the beach and so on. 00:01:36.03\00:01:38.40 You can still have joy. You can have peace. 00:01:38.43\00:01:41.61 You can have a deep satisfaction. 00:01:41.64\00:01:43.74 And that comes in Jesus Christ. 00:01:43.77\00:01:46.80 The value that we have with Him, 00:01:46.83\00:01:48.69 the relationship that we have with Him, 00:01:48.72\00:01:50.29 undergirds everything we do. 00:01:50.32\00:01:52.22 And even in hardship and suffering, 00:01:52.25\00:01:54.49 you can still have joy. 00:01:54.52\00:01:56.05 Fun? No. Suffering is not fun. 00:01:56.08\00:01:59.49 But you can have joy in suffering. 00:01:59.52\00:02:02.01 So Jesus is seeking to offer that woman, 00:02:02.04\00:02:04.48 I mean why has she had all these husbands? 00:02:04.51\00:02:07.83 Must have been her life just isn't working out. 00:02:07.86\00:02:10.94 It just constantly challenging. 00:02:10.97\00:02:13.13 So without Jesus then we can have satisfaction, 00:02:13.16\00:02:16.93 but it's only temporary? 00:02:16.96\00:02:19.47 And we have fun would be a better word, 00:02:19.50\00:02:21.08 because it doesn't last. Right. 00:02:21.11\00:02:22.51 Yeah. Right. 00:02:22.54\00:02:23.91 Whereas the living water that Jesus gives us 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.17 is everlasting, it's not temporary. 00:02:27.20\00:02:29.76 And it stays with you 00:02:29.79\00:02:31.16 through the good times and the bad times. 00:02:31.19\00:02:34.06 Let's go on to verse 16. 00:02:34.09\00:02:36.70 "Jesus said to her, 'Go, call your husband and come here.' 00:02:36.73\00:02:41.36 The woman answered and said 'I have no husband.' 00:02:41.39\00:02:44.30 Jesus said to her, 'You had said, 00:02:44.33\00:02:46.64 You had well said, I have no husband. 00:02:46.67\00:02:49.42 For you have had five husbands, 00:02:49.45\00:02:52.51 and the one whom you now have is not your husband, 00:02:52.54\00:02:55.67 in that you spoke truly.'" 00:02:55.70\00:02:58.44 Now do you remember in the previous program 00:02:58.47\00:03:00.70 we talked about the light that shines on somebody 00:03:00.73\00:03:03.68 and reveals their inner secrets? 00:03:03.71\00:03:06.20 That's happening right here. 00:03:06.23\00:03:08.16 This woman didn't come to the well 00:03:08.19\00:03:09.77 to make any great confessions, 00:03:09.80\00:03:12.01 especially when she sees a Jew. 00:03:12.04\00:03:14.29 She's not about to tell him any of her secret life. 00:03:14.32\00:03:17.47 So she's busy dancing and hiding and so on 00:03:17.50\00:03:20.94 and then Jesus comes right and He says, 00:03:20.97\00:03:23.54 you're telling Me the truth. 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.77 You've had five husbands 00:03:25.80\00:03:27.17 and the one you're living with now, isn't your husband. 00:03:27.20\00:03:30.31 Interesting piece of that is that the Jewish narrative 00:03:30.34\00:03:33.93 about the Samaritans is that they were settled 00:03:33.96\00:03:36.83 by from five cities over in Persia. 00:03:36.86\00:03:41.47 People were brought from there and came here 00:03:41.50\00:03:44.92 and they learned the language-- 00:03:44.95\00:03:46.60 the religion of Yahweh and so on 00:03:46.63\00:03:48.30 when they got here to these mountains of Samaria. 00:03:48.33\00:03:52.18 So from the Jewish prospective these were not real Hebrews, 00:03:52.21\00:03:57.04 these were not a real followers of God. 00:03:57.07\00:04:00.17 They were just sort of painted on, 00:04:00.20\00:04:01.57 they are actually from five other places. 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.55 They were married to five pagan cities, you see. 00:04:03.58\00:04:07.67 And right now there was Yahweh 00:04:07.70\00:04:10.97 but He's not really their husband. 00:04:11.00\00:04:13.08 You see, they're worshipping the God of Israel, 00:04:13.11\00:04:15.07 but it's not really their husband. 00:04:15.10\00:04:16.56 Did they really--their hearts are with these other five. 00:04:16.59\00:04:19.35 So it's interesting how the story dovetails 00:04:19.38\00:04:23.98 with the history of the Samaritans here. 00:04:24.01\00:04:27.34 Jesus is shining the light of judgment on her. 00:04:27.37\00:04:30.91 He's showing the truth about her and does she accept it? 00:04:30.94\00:04:37.78 No, she deflects. 00:04:37.81\00:04:40.11 She tries to turn into a theological argument. 00:04:40.14\00:04:42.89 You notice that. 00:04:42.92\00:04:44.29 You go on and here, He says, you know, you're right. 00:04:44.32\00:04:48.12 You know, you don't-- you don't have a husband, 00:04:48.15\00:04:51.03 you aren't married. 00:04:51.06\00:04:52.43 She says, oh. She says, I see you're prophet. 00:04:52.46\00:04:55.10 Well, maybe you can clear up a theological question for me? 00:04:55.13\00:04:58.86 You know, where is the right place to worship, 00:04:58.89\00:05:00.50 this mountain or that mountain, you see, 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.38 So when Jesus touches her heart she backs off 00:05:03.41\00:05:08.69 and that's an illustration of what 00:05:08.72\00:05:11.28 He tells about in John 3, 00:05:11.31\00:05:13.31 that when the light shines people often shy away from it 00:05:13.34\00:05:16.11 because they don't want their deeds to be exposed. 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.59 And one way that we avoid 00:05:18.62\00:05:20.86 serious spiritual encounters is we ask theological questions. 00:05:20.89\00:05:27.47 Theology and questions and so on can be a diversion 00:05:27.50\00:05:32.75 from facing the real truth about oneself. 00:05:32.78\00:05:36.13 Now to me it seems that Nicodemus 00:05:36.16\00:05:39.32 and the Samaritan woman have some kind of similarities. 00:05:39.35\00:05:43.40 So both come to Jesus in darkness, is that right? 00:05:43.43\00:05:48.36 Well, she comes at noon. 00:05:48.39\00:05:49.76 Well, I mean in darkness, in spiritual darkness. 00:05:49.79\00:05:51.92 Spiritual darkness, yeah. Right. 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.03 And while Nicodemus has been baptized with the waters, 00:05:54.06\00:05:59.70 we said he lacked the spirit and this woman has the water, 00:05:59.73\00:06:04.10 yet she lacks the everlasting water 00:06:04.13\00:06:07.34 and that's where, you know, Jesus comes in and says 00:06:07.37\00:06:10.05 this is what you need in your life. 00:06:10.08\00:06:12.68 Are you trying to marry this off? 00:06:12.71\00:06:14.65 I don't know. 00:06:14.68\00:06:17.18 But there seems to be that connection 00:06:17.21\00:06:19.78 and you said earlier, you will talk about marriage. 00:06:19.81\00:06:22.81 I don't know if you can do that now or maybe-- 00:06:22.84\00:06:24.31 Yeah, shall we do that? 00:06:24.34\00:06:25.71 All right, well, let's do that. 00:06:25.74\00:06:27.18 The--you have the situation of Nicodemus 00:06:27.21\00:06:29.88 and Samaritan woman seem paired off almost 00:06:29.91\00:06:32.20 in fact they are opposites on nearly everything. 00:06:32.23\00:06:34.69 I wrote it down because it was so interesting. 00:06:34.72\00:06:37.48 He's man, she's a woman. 00:06:37.51\00:06:41.03 He's a Jew, she's a Samaritan. 00:06:41.06\00:06:45.08 He's rich. How do we know that? 00:06:45.11\00:06:47.16 He was member of the Samaritan. 00:06:47.19\00:06:48.79 She's poor. How do we know that? 00:06:48.82\00:06:51.75 She was carrying her own water. 00:06:51.78\00:06:54.40 If you were rich you would have other people 00:06:54.43\00:06:56.79 carry the water for you and fill your cistern 00:06:56.82\00:06:59.01 for you shower and everything. 00:06:59.04\00:07:02.20 He comes in the middle of the night. 00:07:02.23\00:07:04.84 She comes at noon. Why is she coming at noon? 00:07:04.87\00:07:07.54 Probably to avoid all the social encounters 00:07:07.57\00:07:09.76 that usually happened at sunrise and sunset at the well. 00:07:09.79\00:07:13.51 The woman looked down on her 00:07:13.54\00:07:15.04 and she just didn't want to be part of that. 00:07:15.07\00:07:18.06 He was educated. How do we know? 00:07:18.09\00:07:20.87 Because he was a teacher of Israel. 00:07:20.90\00:07:23.75 She was illiterate. How do we know? 00:07:23.78\00:07:26.85 She was a woman, woman didn't get educated in those days. 00:07:26.88\00:07:30.98 He was respected. She was despised. 00:07:31.01\00:07:34.93 He had a great name, Nicodemus you know. 00:07:34.96\00:07:38.36 She was Anonymous. 00:07:38.39\00:07:39.97 We don't even know what her name was. 00:07:40.00\00:07:42.51 But here's interesting. He was slow to understand 00:07:42.54\00:07:46.40 and she understood. 00:07:46.43\00:07:48.20 And so Jesus says he really was. 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.71 He lived in the Holy City. 00:07:51.74\00:07:54.63 And she lived in a town of drunkenness. 00:07:54.66\00:07:57.48 So what's going on here? 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.17 Why are these two opposites 00:07:59.20\00:08:00.94 being put side by side in this story? 00:08:00.97\00:08:03.58 Because both of them are acted parables of John 3:16. 00:08:03.61\00:08:09.74 God so loved the world, that He gave His only son 00:08:09.77\00:08:13.43 that whoever believes in Him, might not perish, 00:08:13.46\00:08:17.48 but have everlasting life. 00:08:17.51\00:08:19.17 These are the opposite ends of whosoever. 00:08:19.20\00:08:22.13 You go to one extreme, you go to the other extreme 00:08:22.16\00:08:24.75 and Jesus says it's for everybody. 00:08:24.78\00:08:27.27 I don't care where you've been, 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.19 I don't care what you've done, 00:08:29.22\00:08:31.44 the gospel is for you. 00:08:31.47\00:08:32.91 Now where is the connection when it comes to marriage here? 00:08:32.94\00:08:37.29 Well, you tend to marry your opposites, 00:08:37.32\00:08:39.11 so this too seems set up. All right. 00:08:39.14\00:08:43.15 Are you implying that they married 00:08:43.18\00:08:44.83 or is that a tradition? No, no, no, don't-- 00:08:44.86\00:08:46.65 Okay, we're just trying to clear that up here. 00:08:46.68\00:08:48.63 It's in the text though, within the story of the text. 00:08:48.66\00:08:51.07 It's interesting how these are matching pair. 00:08:51.10\00:08:54.00 Opposites attract. 00:08:54.03\00:08:55.40 And I think that's intentional, it's a matching pair 00:08:55.43\00:08:58.18 to show the opposites sides of God's grace, 00:08:58.21\00:09:02.18 that He can reach out 00:09:02.21\00:09:03.58 to the farthest edges of the opportunity here. 00:09:03.61\00:09:07.11 Why don't we come back to verses 23 and 24. 00:09:07.14\00:09:10.84 "But the hour is coming, and now is, 00:09:10.87\00:09:13.14 when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit, 00:09:13.17\00:09:16.01 and in truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship him. 00:09:16.04\00:09:20.00 God is spirit, and those who worship Him 00:09:20.03\00:09:22.83 must worship in spirit and truth." 00:09:22.86\00:09:26.05 In the Gospel of John, 00:09:26.08\00:09:28.87 the spirit is often the opposite of the material. 00:09:28.90\00:09:33.54 It's the opposite of rituals, 00:09:33.57\00:09:35.45 you know, just going on the surface, 00:09:35.48\00:09:36.85 the spirit goes deep. 00:09:36.88\00:09:38.78 It goes beyond the surface, the true genuine transformation. 00:09:38.81\00:09:43.24 To worship Him in truth, in the synoptic gospels 00:09:43.27\00:09:47.13 the word truth rarely appears in Matthew, Mark and Luke. 00:09:47.16\00:09:50.94 This is one of John's favorite words. 00:09:50.97\00:09:53.47 It's all about the truth. 00:09:53.50\00:09:55.52 If the truth will set you free, 00:09:55.55\00:09:58.16 if you find me, you'll find the truth, 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.55 and the truth is in the words of Jesus, 00:10:01.58\00:10:04.93 the truth is found in the actions of Jesus, 00:10:04.96\00:10:08.18 and it's found in the ministry, 00:10:08.21\00:10:10.94 you know the ongoing ministry of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:10.97\00:10:13.61 After Jesus goes, the Holy Spirit brings the truth. 00:10:13.64\00:10:16.61 He's the spirit of truth. 00:10:16.64\00:10:19.16 So it's focusing in that Jesus is what truth is all about. 00:10:19.19\00:10:26.70 And if you found Jesus as you really is, 00:10:26.73\00:10:30.49 you will have the truth. 00:10:30.52\00:10:31.89 You will know what God is like 00:10:31.92\00:10:33.31 and you'll know the place that you can have with Him. 00:10:33.34\00:10:37.02 But there are many other past to truth 00:10:37.05\00:10:40.17 but they don't lead to truth in the way that Jesus does. 00:10:40.20\00:10:44.86 That's the core of what's happening here. 00:10:44.89\00:10:47.06 And she met the truth, she met the Messiah 00:10:47.09\00:10:50.92 as you said there that comparison 00:10:50.95\00:10:52.89 or that contrast is that she-- 00:10:52.92\00:10:56.38 she understood that this was the Messiah. That's right. 00:10:56.41\00:11:00.66 You see though how the Samaritan woman, 00:11:00.69\00:11:03.66 Nicodemus and so on these are like representative characters? 00:11:03.69\00:11:07.54 For John they have meaning beyond the simple fact 00:11:07.57\00:11:11.08 that they were people in the story. 00:11:11.11\00:11:13.24 The Baptist, and the story comes to represent his whole movement. 00:11:13.27\00:11:18.45 Nicodemus represents the Pharisees 00:11:18.48\00:11:20.80 and the Jewish leaders in the way they responded. 00:11:20.83\00:11:23.82 This woman represents the Samaritan's 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.17 and everybody who's an outcast. 00:11:26.20\00:11:28.26 Pilate represents Rome, you know, so-- 00:11:28.29\00:11:31.61 so the characters in the story are specifically chosen, 00:11:31.64\00:11:35.09 because they have a focus and a place. 00:11:35.12\00:11:39.44 So with Nicodemus and a Samaritan woman 00:11:39.47\00:11:42.71 they are part of this whole story of John 00:11:42.74\00:11:45.51 to build the bigger story and they mark off 00:11:45.54\00:11:49.26 the ends of Jesus' grace and mercy. 00:11:49.29\00:11:54.06 Gods beautiful character, because it tells us for today, 00:11:54.09\00:11:58.96 it doesn't really matter who you're, 00:11:58.99\00:12:02.22 where you've been, what you've done? 00:12:02.25\00:12:05.67 Like Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman, 00:12:05.70\00:12:08.02 what Jesus does is for you. 00:12:08.05\00:12:10.09 "God so loved the world that he gave his only son for you." 00:12:10.12\00:12:15.79 If Nicodemus could be reached 00:12:15.82\00:12:17.55 in all of his hiding and self deception, 00:12:17.58\00:12:20.08 if the Samaritan woman could be reached 00:12:20.11\00:12:21.99 with her five husbands and the mess of her life 00:12:22.02\00:12:25.03 there's certainly hope for you. 00:12:25.06\00:12:27.84 And there's no room for prejudice. 00:12:27.87\00:12:30.96 No room for saying one person is way better than other. 00:12:30.99\00:12:34.74 We're all equal at the foot of the cross, Deyvy. 00:12:34.77\00:12:38.31 Dr. Paulien, we want to thank you again 00:12:38.34\00:12:40.11 for being with us in this Bible study. 00:12:40.14\00:12:42.64 And friends, I also want to thank you for being with us 00:12:42.67\00:12:45.85 and as Dr. Paulien, he was saying 00:12:45.88\00:12:47.40 that God is reaching out to you and He's making that invitation 00:12:47.43\00:12:51.10 just as He did to Nicodemus and to this woman 00:12:51.13\00:12:54.81 to come and not thirst again, 00:12:54.84\00:12:59.14 but to drink of that everlasting water, 00:12:59.17\00:13:02.21 that only Christ can give. 00:13:02.24\00:13:04.00 Thank you, till next time. 00:13:04.03\00:13:05.79
