Hello and welcome to this program, 00:00:20.22\00:00:21.74 "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.77\00:00:23.14 I'm so glad that that you're able to join us 00:00:23.17\00:00:24.69 in this Bible study 00:00:24.72\00:00:26.25 and we're studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:26.28\00:00:28.47 And today we're studying about the Samaritan woman. 00:00:28.50\00:00:32.05 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:32.08\00:00:33.98 He's a scholar of the Bible 00:00:34.01\00:00:36.11 and I have been blessed with the Bible studies 00:00:36.14\00:00:38.57 that I've been sharing with him or we both been studying here. 00:00:38.60\00:00:42.94 And I hope that you too can be blessed 00:00:42.97\00:00:44.86 and if you have a time, if you can join us, 00:00:44.89\00:00:47.54 you can pick up your Bible 00:00:47.57\00:00:48.94 and join us in chapter 4 starting in verse 1, 00:00:48.97\00:00:53.15 that is the Gospel of John. Dr. Jon, welcome again. 00:00:53.18\00:00:58.72 Good to be with you. 00:00:58.75\00:01:00.12 You know, in our last program we were talking about Nicodemus 00:01:00.15\00:01:03.21 and we said that men will be judged 00:01:03.24\00:01:06.67 not for the darkness that they loved, 00:01:06.70\00:01:09.17 but for the light they received in their darkness 00:01:09.20\00:01:12.53 which they rejected. 00:01:12.56\00:01:14.37 And so last chapter we see that 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.69 Jesus is having this one on one conversation with a man. 00:01:16.72\00:01:21.94 And now we come to verse 4 00:01:21.97\00:01:23.48 and He has another one on one conversation, 00:01:23.51\00:01:25.93 but this time with a woman. 00:01:25.96\00:01:28.46 And we know her as the woman at the well. 00:01:28.49\00:01:31.12 That's right. Right. 00:01:31.15\00:01:32.52 So where do we pick up? 00:01:32.55\00:01:34.41 Okay, well this particular story occurs 00:01:34.44\00:01:37.96 in a place called Samaria. 00:01:37.99\00:01:40.21 And in the Old Testament there was a time 00:01:40.24\00:01:43.07 when Israel was divided into two nations. 00:01:43.10\00:01:45.83 So one was around Jerusalem called Judah 00:01:45.86\00:01:49.39 and other was around this area Samaria 00:01:49.42\00:01:52.34 and it was just called Israel and they had different kings 00:01:52.37\00:01:57.20 and eventually even different places of worship. 00:01:57.23\00:02:00.54 I had a chance recently in Israel to go to Tel Dan, 00:02:00.57\00:02:04.17 which has a temple, the remains of a temple. 00:02:04.20\00:02:07.32 It's the only Hebrew temple 00:02:07.35\00:02:10.61 that is still in good shape in the land of Israel 00:02:10.64\00:02:13.11 from the time of the Old Testament. 00:02:13.14\00:02:15.40 It's about 800 BC and you could see the altar there 00:02:15.43\00:02:18.57 and so that's-- that was pretty exciting stuff. 00:02:18.60\00:02:21.39 So in Samaria--there's really a long history here, 00:02:21.42\00:02:25.98 because these Samaritans are kind of cousins to the Jews. 00:02:26.01\00:02:31.81 They are related and yet their religion is different and so on. 00:02:31.84\00:02:35.65 And they actually believed that they had the true religion 00:02:35.68\00:02:39.25 and that the Jews did not. 00:02:39.28\00:02:40.68 And if you go to the Old Testament 00:02:40.71\00:02:42.66 you could see some of that. 00:02:42.69\00:02:45.38 Because when Abraham comes from Ur of the Chaldees 00:02:45.41\00:02:48.55 and comes to Palestine, where does he end up? Shechem. 00:02:48.58\00:02:53.25 And in fact the Samaritan Pentateuch, 00:02:53.28\00:02:56.37 the Samaritan version of the Books of Moses, 00:02:56.40\00:02:59.38 actually say that Abraham came to Shechem in the land of Moriah 00:02:59.41\00:03:04.88 where Abraham sacrificed Isaac. 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.93 So the Samaritan see that activity actually happening 00:03:07.96\00:03:12.19 on Mount Gerizimc in Samaria rather then at Jerusalem? 00:03:12.22\00:03:17.17 So in their minds everything goes there. 00:03:17.20\00:03:20.83 Jacob when he comes back from Mesopotamia, 00:03:20.86\00:03:24.65 he lands in Shechem. 00:03:24.68\00:03:27.71 When the Israelites come out of Egypt 00:03:27.74\00:03:30.18 and they enter into the Promised Land, 00:03:30.21\00:03:31.70 where do they hold their first worship service? 00:03:31.73\00:03:34.76 In Shechem, Mount Gerizim, 00:03:34.79\00:03:36.56 Mount Ebal on either side of Shechem. 00:03:36.59\00:03:38.92 Apparently they fought battles in the north 00:03:38.95\00:03:42.72 and they fought battles in the south, 00:03:42.75\00:03:44.94 but the people in the centre of the country 00:03:44.97\00:03:48.04 were not hostile, you see. 00:03:48.07\00:03:50.67 So apparently Abraham when he came there 00:03:50.70\00:03:54.06 made some converts and stuff like that 00:03:54.09\00:03:55.93 kind of stayed true all the way along. 00:03:55.96\00:03:59.39 In fact archeologists have found in Shechem, 00:03:59.42\00:04:02.92 an altar to the Lord of the covenant. 00:04:02.95\00:04:06.43 And that's interesting language 00:04:06.46\00:04:07.91 because, you know, the Old Testament 00:04:07.94\00:04:10.92 speaks off about the covenant that God makes with His people. 00:04:10.95\00:04:14.04 So you have abundant evidence 00:04:14.07\00:04:17.61 that Shechem was a place of worship 00:04:17.64\00:04:20.34 going all the way back to Abraham. 00:04:20.37\00:04:22.63 When does Jerusalem become the centre of worship? 00:04:22.66\00:04:26.86 Only under David. 00:04:26.89\00:04:28.73 Only about 1000 years after Abraham. 00:04:28.76\00:04:32.20 So for the Samaritans they say, you know, who are you guys? 00:04:32.23\00:04:35.97 We've been here long before you. 00:04:36.00\00:04:37.37 We've been worshiping the true God long before you. 00:04:37.40\00:04:40.23 This is the real place, this is the real religion. 00:04:40.26\00:04:43.44 So when Jesus and this woman enter into debate 00:04:43.47\00:04:46.13 over the right place to worship, 00:04:46.16\00:04:48.11 there's a long history going on here that opens it up. 00:04:48.14\00:04:53.86 Now when the Israelites went to Babylon, 00:04:53.89\00:05:00.23 those people came from Judah, 00:05:00.26\00:05:02.19 the southern kingdom not the north. 00:05:02.22\00:05:04.33 They went to Babylon 00:05:04.36\00:05:05.73 and with the help of Daniel, Ezekiel and so on, 00:05:05.76\00:05:08.32 their religion was reformed, their idolatry was burned away 00:05:08.35\00:05:12.82 and they came back from Babylon to change people. 00:05:12.85\00:05:15.84 When they came back, 00:05:15.87\00:05:17.24 there were people still in the land 00:05:17.27\00:05:18.86 who remembered the old ways and they were conservative. 00:05:18.89\00:05:22.94 I guess you would say. 00:05:22.97\00:05:24.34 And they--these people come back from Babylon, 00:05:24.37\00:05:25.74 they got a totally new religion. 00:05:25.77\00:05:27.14 What's going on here, you see? 00:05:27.17\00:05:29.20 So the Samaritans, they're kind of like old school Hebrews. 00:05:29.23\00:05:34.47 They're hanging on to the old religion 00:05:34.50\00:05:36.42 where Yahweh had female consorts, 00:05:36.45\00:05:39.56 you know, you can even see a little female figurines 00:05:39.59\00:05:43.25 that you'll find archeologically in that place. 00:05:43.28\00:05:47.40 So the Samaritans thought of their religion as superior 00:05:47.43\00:05:50.41 because it was earlier, because they hadn't changed. 00:05:50.44\00:05:54.89 But you see God often changes things. 00:05:54.92\00:05:58.82 And if we don't move with God when He changes stuff, 00:05:58.85\00:06:02.67 we can get left behind, 00:06:02.70\00:06:04.07 even though we're faithful to what we thought we knew. 00:06:04.10\00:06:07.00 We haven't changed, everything is looking good. 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.81 And yet when God is moving, when the Spirit comes, 00:06:09.84\00:06:12.45 it can take you places you didn't expect. 00:06:12.48\00:06:15.15 So the Samaritans were kind of people 00:06:15.18\00:06:17.41 who were hanging on to the old ways. 00:06:17.44\00:06:19.88 And now Jesus comes to the Jews 00:06:19.91\00:06:23.20 who were now also hanging on to their old ways 00:06:23.23\00:06:25.86 and He's offerings something totally new in the sense. 00:06:25.89\00:06:30.44 They were all stuck with the temple. 00:06:30.47\00:06:32.91 Temple on Mount Gerizim or temple in Jerusalem 00:06:32.94\00:06:35.81 and that's the right place 00:06:35.84\00:06:37.21 and if you got that, you're good, 00:06:37.24\00:06:38.61 if you don't have it, you're not. 00:06:38.64\00:06:40.68 And Jesus come and says, 00:06:40.71\00:06:42.21 it doesn't matter, Gerizim, Jerusalem. 00:06:42.24\00:06:45.44 He says true followers can worship God anywhere. 00:06:45.47\00:06:49.13 So that's the deep thing that's coming through here. 00:06:49.16\00:06:54.17 Unfortunately the Jews 00:06:54.20\00:06:55.57 and the Samaritans hated each other. 00:06:55.60\00:06:59.80 The Jews felt that 00:06:59.83\00:07:01.67 everything the Samaritans touched was defiled 00:07:01.70\00:07:04.94 by the fact that they touched it. 00:07:04.97\00:07:07.18 And so the Jews held a very low opinion, 00:07:07.21\00:07:10.63 but here's an interesting thing. 00:07:10.66\00:07:13.17 When people called Jesus Messiah what does He usually do? 00:07:13.20\00:07:18.79 No, don't call me Messiah, you don't use those terms? 00:07:18.82\00:07:22.81 In Samaria, He says, yeah I'm the Messiah. 00:07:22.84\00:07:26.69 What's the difference here? It's the view of Messiah. 00:07:26.72\00:07:30.52 For the Jews at that time the Messiah was gonna be a king, 00:07:30.55\00:07:34.64 a military general who would deliver them from the Romans. 00:07:34.67\00:07:37.96 Jesus couldn't say yes to that. 00:07:37.99\00:07:40.08 Their agenda for the Messiah was not his. 00:07:40.11\00:07:43.07 When He said He's Messiah, they would expect Him to be 00:07:43.10\00:07:45.35 something different than what He was. 00:07:45.38\00:07:47.16 But the Samaritans didn't have a military 00:07:47.19\00:07:50.21 and economic political picture of the Messiah. 00:07:50.24\00:07:53.63 They thought of the Messiah as a reformer, 00:07:53.66\00:07:57.22 someone who would teach them the true way to worship. 00:07:57.25\00:08:00.90 And so you see in Samaria, 00:08:00.93\00:08:02.73 Jesus could admit that He was the Messiah, 00:08:02.76\00:08:05.24 because they would understand Him correctly from that term. 00:08:05.27\00:08:09.71 So the Samaritans, you know, 00:08:09.74\00:08:14.10 had some great ideas about the Messiah 00:08:14.13\00:08:17.19 and Jesus accepts their ideas 00:08:17.22\00:08:19.73 and He says, yeah I'm the Messiah 00:08:19.76\00:08:21.98 in the terms that you have. 00:08:22.01\00:08:24.05 Now before we get to the text, 00:08:24.08\00:08:25.55 there's one more thing I want to share with you. 00:08:25.58\00:08:27.78 So we talked about weddings a few programs back, 00:08:27.81\00:08:31.09 and I see the smile come on your face. 00:08:31.12\00:08:33.29 I think about that because that's a good thing 00:08:33.32\00:08:35.95 in your future here somewhere. 00:08:35.98\00:08:37.85 But you know, in the Old Testament 00:08:37.88\00:08:39.99 there were lots of encounters at wells. 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.83 Moses found his wife at a well. Jacob found his wife at a well. 00:08:43.86\00:08:49.13 Isaac found his wife at a well. 00:08:49.16\00:08:52.48 And interestingly enough 00:08:52.51\00:08:54.16 every time the couple encounters each other at the well, 00:08:54.19\00:08:59.20 then the girl goes back leaves the well, 00:08:59.23\00:09:03.10 leaves him at the well and goes to get her family. 00:09:03.13\00:09:06.25 The family comes back and then the marriage happens. 00:09:06.28\00:09:09.92 So I've a question for you. 00:09:09.95\00:09:11.85 Do you know where the nearest well around here is? 00:09:11.88\00:09:17.52 Oh, we can work on that. May be off the air. 00:09:17.55\00:09:21.80 All right, if you go ahead. That's right. 00:09:21.83\00:09:23.69 So here you have this background, 00:09:23.72\00:09:26.32 so when John is writing the story 00:09:26.35\00:09:29.30 and people are reading the story at the time 00:09:29.33\00:09:31.04 and if they have that background and mind they're gonna say 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.97 interesting he's meeting a woman. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.44 He meets her at the well, she runs off, 00:09:36.47\00:09:38.86 she gets her family they come back, 00:09:38.89\00:09:40.72 you know, something is happening here. 00:09:40.75\00:09:43.26 And you made a suggestion little while ago, 00:09:43.29\00:09:45.95 it says in the story that she has five husbands, 00:09:45.98\00:09:48.16 she's living with a sixth one and what was your idea? 00:09:48.19\00:09:52.05 Well, the sixth one was that she-- 00:09:52.08\00:09:53.69 where she meets Jesus and-- Yeah. 00:09:53.72\00:09:57.93 So maybe He's the seventh guy? 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.51 Well, I'm just-- I'm just thinking. 00:09:59.54\00:10:02.25 It's kind of the way John thinks. 00:10:02.28\00:10:04.21 I've never gone there before, but I like that idea 00:10:04.24\00:10:07.06 and maybe there's an implication here, 00:10:07.09\00:10:09.82 that she's had six men and Jesus is the seventh. 00:10:09.85\00:10:13.62 And as the seventh He's the true husband, 00:10:13.65\00:10:16.38 the one that can really meet her needs. 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.36 But anyway I don't know if John is going there, 00:10:19.39\00:10:21.74 but that's an exciting idea 00:10:21.77\00:10:23.52 and John certainly tends to think that way quite often. 00:10:23.55\00:10:27.34 All right then--should we just get into the text? 00:10:27.37\00:10:30.04 Let's get into the text? 00:10:30.07\00:10:31.44 Yeah. All right. 00:10:31.47\00:10:32.84 So we're in chapter 4, Jon, and we're reading verses-- 00:10:32.87\00:10:37.16 shall we start reading from verse 1? 00:10:37.19\00:10:40.56 Well, let's go to verse 5, 00:10:40.59\00:10:43.01 if we had more time it would be nice to go through every verse. 00:10:43.04\00:10:45.74 But I think there's some key things 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.50 we want to touch base on. 00:10:47.53\00:10:49.28 "So he came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, 00:10:49.31\00:10:52.84 near the plot of ground 00:10:52.87\00:10:54.24 that Jacob gave to his son Joseph." Now Jacob-- 00:10:54.27\00:10:57.40 Now this well, actually Jacob's well is there, 00:10:57.43\00:11:01.43 this well is still there. 00:11:01.46\00:11:02.99 It's actually in the basement of a church. 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.61 They built a church around it. 00:11:05.64\00:11:07.69 And this is a Palestinian area 00:11:07.72\00:11:10.14 and has been at times a place of tension, 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.28 but I was able to visit there once. 00:11:12.31\00:11:14.49 And it's some of the sweetest water 00:11:14.52\00:11:16.99 you would ever taste it, 00:11:17.02\00:11:19.23 it's really a pure, it's a lovely well. 00:11:19.26\00:11:22.56 Interesting the city is called Sychar 00:11:22.59\00:11:26.64 and that's exactly what it sounds like Sychar, 00:11:26.67\00:11:30.79 you know, it kind of close to sugar, 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.41 but it actually means drunkenness. 00:11:33.44\00:11:36.66 Now think about that. 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.06 Jesus spends time in the village of drunkenness. 00:11:38.09\00:11:42.63 You know, Jesus is not worried about guilt by association, 00:11:42.66\00:11:47.76 He goes and meets people where they are, 00:11:47.79\00:11:50.07 and He brings them out from where they are 00:11:50.10\00:11:53.87 to where they need to be. 00:11:53.90\00:11:55.54 I think sometimes these Christians were afraid 00:11:55.57\00:11:57.59 to associate with people that might bring us a bad name 00:11:57.62\00:12:01.40 or something like that, 00:12:01.43\00:12:02.80 but Jesus doesn't seem to have that fear. 00:12:02.83\00:12:04.20 Not that Jesus was a drunker to me than where they were. 00:12:04.23\00:12:07.69 Didn't need to do that. Right. Okay. 00:12:07.72\00:12:10.07 No, He didn't need to do that. 00:12:10.10\00:12:11.47 But He meets them in their place 00:12:11.50\00:12:13.65 and He's not ashamed to be seen with them. 00:12:13.68\00:12:16.69 And here you have a town. 00:12:16.72\00:12:18.09 Imagine living in the town called drunkenness. 00:12:18.12\00:12:21.87 I think some people make me feel, 00:12:21.90\00:12:23.27 they do living in such a town. 00:12:23.30\00:12:25.08 Everybody knows your secrets. Yeah. 00:12:25.11\00:12:27.25 Why don't you go to verse 10 and go through verse 14. 00:12:27.28\00:12:31.75 "Jesus answered and said to her, 'If you knew the gift of God 00:12:31.78\00:12:35.15 and who it is who says to you give me a drink, 00:12:35.18\00:12:38.45 you would have asked him 00:12:38.48\00:12:40.20 and he would have given you living water.' 00:12:40.23\00:12:43.07 The woman said to him 'Sir, 00:12:43.10\00:12:44.88 You've nothing to draw with and the well is deep. 00:12:44.91\00:12:48.72 Where then do you get that living water? 00:12:48.75\00:12:51.88 Are you greater than our father Jacob, 00:12:51.91\00:12:53.67 who gave us the well and drank from it himself, 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.91 as well as his sons and his livestock?' 00:12:56.94\00:12:59.48 Jesus answered and said to her, 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.17 'Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 00:13:01.20\00:13:04.41 but whoever drinks of the water 00:13:04.44\00:13:05.82 that I shall give him will never thirst, 00:13:05.85\00:13:08.46 but the water that I shall give him 00:13:08.49\00:13:10.07 will become in him a fountain of water 00:13:10.10\00:13:12.49 springing up into everlasting life.'" 00:13:12.52\00:13:16.29 Well, in this story, a woman comes to the well 00:13:16.32\00:13:19.43 and Jesus asks her for drink 00:13:19.46\00:13:22.25 and she is shocked by that because He's clearly a Jew. 00:13:22.28\00:13:26.88 And Jews don't associate with Samaritans. 00:13:26.91\00:13:30.63 And for her to give Him a drink, 00:13:30.66\00:13:32.52 his lips are going to have to touch her pot 00:13:32.55\00:13:34.55 which in Jews' mind is the defile pot. 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.62 So Jesus is breaking all the cultural barriers 00:13:37.65\00:13:41.18 to reach out to this woman 00:13:41.21\00:13:43.52 and she is interested in physical water. 00:13:43.55\00:13:48.88 Well, we need water to live. We need food in order to live. 00:13:48.91\00:13:52.98 But if our whole attention is there, 00:13:53.01\00:13:55.30 we're not going to get with this gospel, 00:13:55.33\00:13:56.96 He's offering us. 00:13:56.99\00:13:58.36 And Jesus has a different kind of water 00:13:58.39\00:14:01.52 that will be satisfying in a way 00:14:01.55\00:14:03.81 that the regular water never could. 00:14:03.84\00:14:06.22 And let's talk about that 00:14:06.25\00:14:07.62 satisfying water after this break. 00:14:07.65\00:14:09.69 And stay with us, friends as we continue 00:14:09.72\00:14:11.44 to study this story in the Gospel of John. 00:14:11.47\00:14:13.91
