And welcome back, we are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.78 and we are in chapter 3, we're studying Nicodemus. 00:00:03.81\00:00:08.41 And Dr. Jon Paulien is with us. 00:00:08.44\00:00:10.86 I have a question for you, Dr. Paulien. 00:00:10.89\00:00:13.23 We're talking about how Jesus answers 00:00:13.26\00:00:17.38 some of His, some of His questions. 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.74 And He goes on to explain 00:00:19.77\00:00:21.57 that unless one is born of water and the Spirit 00:00:21.60\00:00:26.80 and Jesus says that, 00:00:26.83\00:00:30.57 which that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 00:00:30.60\00:00:33.17 But what is the water, being born of water mean? 00:00:33.20\00:00:38.56 Well, you have Nicodemus in the story. 00:00:38.59\00:00:40.68 Jesus is speaking to him, 00:00:40.71\00:00:42.08 so it's got to make some sense to Nicodemus. 00:00:42.11\00:00:45.00 And you remember in the previous segment 00:00:45.03\00:00:47.60 Nicodemus is the leader of these Pharisees in a real way. 00:00:47.63\00:00:50.91 He's the dean of the seminary. 00:00:50.94\00:00:52.72 The Pharisees sent a delegation to meet John, the Baptist. 00:00:52.75\00:00:57.04 You know, baptism is not normal for Jews 00:00:57.07\00:00:59.72 at that time as we think of baptism today. 00:00:59.75\00:01:02.73 They did have these ceremonial washings. 00:01:02.76\00:01:04.92 And so John is over there baptizing 00:01:04.95\00:01:07.28 and Nicodemus has that in his mind. 00:01:07.31\00:01:10.17 So I think it's very, very likely 00:01:10.20\00:01:12.34 that when Jesus talks about water and the Spirit here, 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.83 He is referring to baptism. 00:01:14.86\00:01:16.73 And you need to be baptized in the Spirit. 00:01:16.76\00:01:20.59 You see here's the thing. 00:01:20.62\00:01:22.33 You can be baptized, 00:01:22.36\00:01:24.07 you can do all the washings that Nicodemus used to do. 00:01:24.10\00:01:27.07 Maybe he was even baptized by John, you see. 00:01:27.10\00:01:30.14 And if that's little detail is not here, 00:01:30.17\00:01:31.98 it would be very interesting historically. 00:01:32.01\00:01:34.15 So Jesus then would be saying, you can be baptized, 00:01:34.18\00:01:39.52 you can have your name on the books and stuff, 00:01:39.55\00:01:41.72 but if you haven't given your life 00:01:41.75\00:01:43.37 to be transformed by the Spirit, 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.88 then you haven't received all of that is there for you. 00:01:45.91\00:01:48.94 I would like to point to a text in Ezekiel 36, 00:01:48.97\00:01:53.02 where water and Spirit are tied together 00:01:53.05\00:01:55.69 and may well have been in John's mind 00:01:55.72\00:01:58.07 or in Jesus' mind at this point. 00:01:58.10\00:02:00.86 Ezekiel 36:25-27. 00:02:00.89\00:02:06.66 It says, "I will sprinkle clean water on you, 00:02:06.69\00:02:09.78 and you will be clean, 00:02:09.81\00:02:11.57 I will cleanse you from all your impurities 00:02:11.60\00:02:13.93 and from all your idols. 00:02:13.96\00:02:15.71 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you, 00:02:15.74\00:02:19.03 I will remove from you the heart of stone 00:02:19.06\00:02:21.09 and give you a heart of flesh. 00:02:21.12\00:02:22.93 And I will put my Spirit in you 00:02:22.96\00:02:24.54 and move you to follow my decrees 00:02:24.57\00:02:26.72 and be careful to keep my laws." 00:02:26.75\00:02:28.87 So here water and Spirit are united together as a cleansing 00:02:28.90\00:02:32.91 and it's an empowering to a new kind of life. 00:02:32.94\00:02:35.73 And Jesus was saying, you know, you can be dean of the seminary, 00:02:35.76\00:02:38.77 you can have your name on the books, 00:02:38.80\00:02:40.33 you can be baptized all of that. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.01 But until you give yourself totally to Christ 00:02:42.04\00:02:44.84 and allow Him to transform you through the Spirit. 00:02:44.87\00:02:48.15 It's only an outward shell. 00:02:48.18\00:02:50.11 In the Gospel of John, there's this constant contrast 00:02:50.14\00:02:52.93 between the outward shell of religion 00:02:52.96\00:02:55.30 and the real genuine article. 00:02:55.33\00:02:57.71 And this born again concept, being born from heaven, 00:02:57.74\00:03:01.83 being born of the Spirit. 00:03:01.86\00:03:03.51 So, it's very important part of the Gospel of John. 00:03:03.54\00:03:07.09 And Jesus is looking for genuine followers. 00:03:07.12\00:03:10.85 Not just in number, 00:03:10.88\00:03:13.13 but people with the sincerity to follow Him, 00:03:13.16\00:03:17.52 to take up their cross and keep His commandments. 00:03:17.55\00:03:21.52 That was a sharp, really sharp pick up right now, 00:03:21.55\00:03:24.39 because we haven't yet talked about verses 18 to 21 00:03:24.42\00:03:27.82 but there that's exactly where he goes with this. 00:03:27.85\00:03:30.55 When John himself interprets the story of Nicodemus, 00:03:30.58\00:03:34.57 he goes there it's all about genuineness. 00:03:34.60\00:03:37.02 And we will see that in just a moment. 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.16 But before we get there, let's stop at verse 16 00:03:39.19\00:03:41.74 because everybody loves John 3:16, 00:03:41.77\00:03:45.51 even people at football games sometimes. 00:03:45.54\00:03:47.82 And, you know, John 3:16 is the big thing, 00:03:47.85\00:03:50.93 you know, you see the signs sometimes. 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.47 So why don't you read it for us 00:03:53.50\00:03:55.68 in the New King James, I think you have that. 00:03:55.71\00:03:58.00 "For God so loved the world 00:03:58.03\00:03:59.40 that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.55 that whoever believes in Him 00:04:01.58\00:04:03.32 should not perish but have everlasting life." 00:04:03.35\00:04:06.62 That only begotten peace, that bothered some people. 00:04:06.65\00:04:09.90 You know, what does He mean Jesus was His only begotten Son? 00:04:09.93\00:04:14.65 Did God have a son? 00:04:14.68\00:04:17.25 You know, in a literal sense 00:04:17.28\00:04:19.60 and doesn't that contradict what John was saying in 1:1 00:04:19.63\00:04:23.24 where Jesus is not part of creation, 00:04:23.27\00:04:25.22 He has no beginning and all the rest of that. 00:04:25.25\00:04:28.38 Well, there's a long history to this passage. 00:04:28.41\00:04:30.99 And you may be aware that 00:04:31.02\00:04:33.04 well, the New Testament was written in Greek. 00:04:33.07\00:04:35.26 It got translated into Aramaic, into Latin, 00:04:35.29\00:04:39.15 into Ethiopic languages, etcetera. 00:04:39.18\00:04:42.18 So there were lot of different translations 00:04:42.21\00:04:44.46 and the translation that most powerfully affected 00:04:44.49\00:04:47.56 the main line Christian church was the Latin translation. 00:04:47.59\00:04:51.79 Particularly one called the Vulgate 00:04:51.82\00:04:54.39 which in the middle ages was a primary way 00:04:54.42\00:04:56.80 that people got into the Bible. 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.88 And it's interesting that in translating this text, 00:04:58.91\00:05:01.79 the Latin gives you two options 00:05:01.82\00:05:03.92 for this mono-ganese in the Greek is this one of kind. 00:05:03.95\00:05:09.55 Mono-ganese really means one of a kind, 00:05:09.58\00:05:13.48 if you take it literally. 00:05:13.51\00:05:15.07 In Latin you could translate that unicus which means unique. 00:05:15.10\00:05:20.51 Well, you could translate unigenitus 00:05:20.54\00:05:23.39 which means only born or one of a kind once again. 00:05:23.42\00:05:28.19 So in Latin there's an ambiguity 00:05:28.22\00:05:31.01 between one of a kind and only born. 00:05:31.04\00:05:34.65 So the Latin translators chose this only born. 00:05:34.68\00:05:38.98 But mono-ganese, 00:05:39.01\00:05:41.94 the Greek word here is used in the story of Isaac. 00:05:41.97\00:05:45.28 Isaac was Abraham's mono-ganese. 00:05:45.31\00:05:49.08 Wait a minute. Was that his only son? 00:05:49.11\00:05:54.97 Who else does he have? 00:05:55.00\00:05:57.07 He had-- Ishmael. 00:05:57.10\00:05:58.47 Ishmael. Right. 00:05:58.50\00:05:59.87 First, Isaac wasn't even the first born son. 00:05:59.90\00:06:02.46 He was not the only son of Abraham. 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.41 In fact, did you know that after Sarah died, 00:06:04.44\00:06:07.22 Abraham remarried had six more sons. 00:06:07.25\00:06:10.27 Lot of people don't know that little detail 00:06:10.30\00:06:12.19 'cause it's only mentioned in passing. 00:06:12.22\00:06:13.71 So he was not Abraham's only son, 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.93 mono-ganese doesn't fit there, but he was one of a kind. 00:06:15.96\00:06:19.67 He was the only son of Sarah 00:06:19.70\00:06:22.12 and he was the only son of a promise 00:06:22.15\00:06:25.15 that God gave special promises to fall on Isaac and only Isaac. 00:06:25.18\00:06:31.93 So Abraham and Isaac, 00:06:31.96\00:06:34.72 their relationship was one of a kind, it was unique. 00:06:34.75\00:06:37.47 And so Jesus has a relationship with God like no one else. 00:06:37.50\00:06:41.38 He has that unique relationship with God. 00:06:41.41\00:06:44.37 And the beauty of this passage is as it says, 00:06:44.40\00:06:48.43 God so loved the world that He gave His unique One, 00:06:48.46\00:06:55.50 His uniqueness that Jesus is unique. 00:06:55.53\00:06:58.38 He is God Himself. 00:06:58.41\00:07:00.53 He Himself contains within Himself a fullness of God. 00:07:00.56\00:07:06.68 In Jewish thinking of the time, God is the creator 00:07:06.71\00:07:12.80 and God is the only one who can be worshipped. 00:07:12.83\00:07:15.74 And He is the only true ruler of the universe. 00:07:15.77\00:07:18.41 And Jesus is portrayed in all three ways. 00:07:18.44\00:07:22.72 In the New Testament, He is the creator, 00:07:22.75\00:07:26.52 He is the ruler of the universe and He can be worshipped. 00:07:26.55\00:07:30.09 Angels can't be worshipped but Jesus can. 00:07:30.12\00:07:32.43 That means Jesus carried in Himself 00:07:32.46\00:07:34.64 the fullness of what God is like. 00:07:34.67\00:07:37.55 And so in His coming, 00:07:37.58\00:07:39.60 He helps us to understand what in fact God is like. 00:07:39.63\00:07:44.52 One more thing I want to mention, 00:07:44.55\00:07:45.92 then we want to get to verses 18 to 22. 00:07:45.95\00:07:48.61 "Since God so loved the world that He gave His only Son 00:07:48.64\00:07:51.37 that whosoever believes might have everlasting life." 00:07:51.40\00:07:57.15 I think that whosoever is crucial 00:07:57.18\00:08:00.27 to what John is doing here 00:08:00.30\00:08:02.07 because Nicodemus is an example of whosoever. 00:08:02.10\00:08:05.14 Jesus came for the Jews and for the Pharisees. 00:08:05.17\00:08:08.77 The Samaritan woman is another example of the whosoever. 00:08:08.80\00:08:12.53 She is the opposite end from Nicodemus. 00:08:12.56\00:08:15.25 Yeah, she is not a religious teacher. 00:08:15.28\00:08:17.41 She is a woman who's been living a very loose life. 00:08:17.44\00:08:20.77 In every way she is the opposite of Nicodemus. 00:08:20.80\00:08:22.99 Yet the whosoever includes her. 00:08:23.02\00:08:25.77 And then at the end of the chapter 4, 00:08:25.80\00:08:27.21 you have a Gentile prince who comes to Jesus. 00:08:27.24\00:08:31.03 So Jewish leader, woman at the outcast of society, 00:08:31.06\00:08:36.09 Gentile prince, whosoever includes them all. 00:08:36.12\00:08:39.71 I don't care what background you have, 00:08:39.74\00:08:41.50 where you've come from, the gospel includes you. 00:08:41.53\00:08:45.50 But let's finish off with verses 18 to 21 00:08:45.53\00:08:47.91 'cause this is often overlooked 00:08:47.94\00:08:49.74 and we want to capture that if we can. 00:08:49.77\00:08:52.10 "'He who believes in Him is not condemned, 00:08:52.13\00:08:54.34 but he who does not believe is condemned already, 00:08:54.37\00:08:58.25 because he has not believed 00:08:58.28\00:08:59.65 in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 00:08:59.68\00:09:02.46 And this is the condemnation, 00:09:02.49\00:09:04.18 that the light has come into the world, 00:09:04.21\00:09:06.76 that men loved darkness rather than light, 00:09:06.79\00:09:09.07 because their deeds were evil. 00:09:09.10\00:09:11.37 For everyone practicing evil hates the light 00:09:11.40\00:09:13.85 and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed. 00:09:13.88\00:09:18.70 But he who does the truth comes to the light, 00:09:18.73\00:09:21.14 that his deeds may be clearly seen, 00:09:21.17\00:09:24.01 that they have been done in God.' " 00:09:24.04\00:09:27.51 So what does light do? 00:09:27.54\00:09:29.69 Light exposes the reality of things 00:09:29.72\00:09:32.23 that were not known in the dark, you see. 00:09:32.26\00:09:35.37 One thing you don't know is the character of a person. 00:09:35.40\00:09:38.65 Jesus is the light. 00:09:38.68\00:09:40.14 When He comes Nicodemus or Nicodemus comes to Him, 00:09:40.17\00:09:42.95 Jesus exposes the spiritual deficit in Nicodemus' life. 00:09:42.98\00:09:48.59 So this is an illustration of everyone that Jesus met, 00:09:48.62\00:09:52.10 Jesus very presence calls them to judgment. 00:09:52.13\00:09:55.73 Jesus' very existence there is a decisive moment. 00:09:55.76\00:10:00.81 If they reject Jesus, they're turning away from the light, 00:10:00.84\00:10:04.97 they are going back in the darkness. 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.02 If they accept Jesus, they come to the light 00:10:07.05\00:10:09.49 and they are accepted by Him. 00:10:09.52\00:10:13.36 Then it raises the question. 00:10:13.39\00:10:14.77 Why wouldn't people come to Jesus? 00:10:14.80\00:10:18.49 Why would you reject the gospel? 00:10:18.52\00:10:20.25 It's free. 00:10:20.28\00:10:22.19 Just ask and you will receive. 00:10:22.22\00:10:24.53 Why would people reject that? 00:10:24.56\00:10:27.82 Tells us in verse 20. 00:10:27.85\00:10:29.98 John 3:20. 00:10:30.01\00:10:31.88 "For everyone practicing evil hates the light 00:10:31.91\00:10:34.84 and does not come to the light, 00:10:34.87\00:10:37.20 lest his deeds should be exposed." 00:10:37.23\00:10:39.46 So what's the problem? 00:10:39.49\00:10:40.86 Why don't people come to Jesus? 00:10:40.89\00:10:42.26 They don't want their deeds to be exposed. 00:10:42.29\00:10:44.33 Ah. You see, every one of us has little dirty secrets. 00:10:44.36\00:10:50.45 Every one of us has dark places 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.56 we don't want the light to shine. 00:10:52.59\00:10:54.37 We feared ever since Adam and Eve hid in the garden from God. 00:10:54.40\00:10:58.87 We have been filled with shame and with guilt 00:10:58.90\00:11:01.42 and we try to hide from God, 00:11:01.45\00:11:02.85 that's natural for human beings to do. 00:11:02.88\00:11:05.70 And so when Jesus comes many people shied away from Him 00:11:05.73\00:11:09.40 because they recognized 00:11:09.43\00:11:11.19 that they would have to give up their secrets. 00:11:11.22\00:11:13.94 That's what confession is all about. 00:11:13.97\00:11:16.34 It's simply telling the truth about yourself. 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.50 It's allowing the dirty secrets to come out. 00:11:19.53\00:11:22.18 If we confess our sins, 00:11:22.21\00:11:23.81 He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. 00:11:23.84\00:11:26.70 Why would not confessing be a problem? 00:11:26.73\00:11:29.65 Because we are saying 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.05 I'm keeping, this is mine, you can't have it, okay. 00:11:31.08\00:11:34.52 When Jesus shines to light, 00:11:34.55\00:11:36.03 He exposes the things that we are hiding. 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.36 Now we have a problem. 00:11:38.39\00:11:40.18 We can be like a bug. 00:11:40.21\00:11:41.58 If you ever taken a walk in the night 00:11:41.61\00:11:43.34 and you see a rock on the ground with your flashlight, 00:11:43.37\00:11:45.75 you pick up the rock. 00:11:45.78\00:11:47.22 And you shine the flashlight, what's going on, 00:11:47.25\00:11:49.26 there's often lot of little bugs, 00:11:49.29\00:11:50.66 you know, just going crazy. 00:11:50.69\00:11:52.06 They don't like the light, 00:11:52.09\00:11:53.46 they're like, hey, put that rock back, man. 00:11:53.49\00:11:54.86 I like being under the rock, it was nice and safe in there. 00:11:54.89\00:11:57.55 The light is scaring me, you see. 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.84 People are like bugs under a rock. 00:11:59.87\00:12:01.78 When the light shines, we tend to freak out. 00:12:01.81\00:12:05.17 And that's the reason people turn away from the gospel, 00:12:05.20\00:12:08.48 because they don't want their deeds to be exposed. 00:12:08.51\00:12:11.87 And that's a challenge to me, 00:12:11.90\00:12:13.44 because I need to ask myself everyday, am I living genuinely? 00:12:13.47\00:12:17.79 Is my faith at home 00:12:17.82\00:12:19.95 the same faith that I live when I'm on TV? 00:12:19.98\00:12:22.32 When I'm out in public? 00:12:22.35\00:12:23.72 When I'm preaching to people? 00:12:23.75\00:12:25.19 Or is there an act that I can put on in this place, 00:12:25.22\00:12:27.81 but back at home the real me shows up, you see. 00:12:27.84\00:12:30.69 Who we are when no one's looking, 00:12:30.72\00:12:32.57 who we are at home, 00:12:32.60\00:12:33.97 that's the real test of whether we are following Jesus or not. 00:12:34.00\00:12:37.82 And Jesus invites people to come to Him, 00:12:37.85\00:12:40.51 but in the process He shines the light on us. 00:12:40.54\00:12:43.57 And He calls for authenticity for the faith to be real. 00:12:43.60\00:12:47.13 So what the verse is saying is that men will be judged for-- 00:12:47.16\00:12:50.99 not for the darkness He loved 00:12:51.02\00:12:52.70 but rather for the light that they receive 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.88 when they are not in darkness which they rejected. 00:12:54.91\00:12:58.29 And well, Dr. Paulien I pray that light that God-- 00:12:58.32\00:13:01.29 that God gives me that I cannot reject 00:13:01.32\00:13:04.55 and that I can continue to grow in that light. 00:13:04.58\00:13:07.41 And I pray that to you too, my friends till next time. 00:13:07.44\00:13:09.71
