And welcome back again. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We're studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 Particularly we're studying the cleansing of the temple 00:00:04.20\00:00:07.04 in the last part of Chapter 2. 00:00:07.07\00:00:09.67 And we are with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:09.70\00:00:12.39 And this is very exciting 00:00:12.42\00:00:13.79 because he has a very detailed in-depth study on this gospel. 00:00:13.82\00:00:18.73 And, Dr. Paulien, we left off on how this story is leading to-- 00:00:18.76\00:00:25.06 has a spiritual emphasis towards the cross. 00:00:25.09\00:00:29.43 It really connects with the wedding of Cana story. 00:00:29.46\00:00:32.36 So you can read the chapter as a whole. 00:00:32.39\00:00:35.03 And there's all sorts of hints 00:00:35.06\00:00:36.99 that John drops that all end up at the cross. 00:00:37.02\00:00:39.32 You have the third day in Chapter 2 verse 1. 00:00:39.35\00:00:42.82 You have the woman, you know, 00:00:42.85\00:00:45.57 marry who appears again at the cross. 00:00:45.60\00:00:47.84 You have the idea, my time hasn't come, 00:00:47.87\00:00:50.86 the disciples saw His glory. 00:00:50.89\00:00:53.50 You have the water turned into wine 00:00:53.53\00:00:55.54 which recalls the blood of Jesus. 00:00:55.57\00:00:58.22 Here in the temple story, 00:00:58.25\00:01:00.37 it says Jesus replaces the temple with His body. 00:01:00.40\00:01:03.70 He replaces the sacrificial animals with His body 00:01:03.73\00:01:06.78 which will be sacrificed on the cross, 00:01:06.81\00:01:08.39 so for the person who knows the Gospel of John 2 00:01:08.42\00:01:13.46 is full of foretastes of the cross 00:01:13.49\00:01:16.89 and it illustrates the point 00:01:16.92\00:01:18.53 I was making each of the stories in the Gospel of John 00:01:18.56\00:01:21.83 is like a parable that has deeper spiritual meaning. 00:01:21.86\00:01:25.88 And the cross for John is the place 00:01:25.91\00:01:29.28 where God is truly revealed. 00:01:29.31\00:01:31.04 People have a lot of different views of God, 00:01:31.07\00:01:34.01 but the truest view of God is the one we see in Jesus 00:01:34.04\00:01:38.11 in the Gospel of John. 00:01:38.14\00:01:39.68 He is revealing God's character 00:01:39.71\00:01:41.86 in His willingness to die for us, 00:01:41.89\00:01:45.68 in His willingness to be gracious and kind and patient 00:01:45.71\00:01:50.24 with difficult people, people who just never get it, 00:01:50.27\00:01:52.93 they don't understand, they oppose everything, 00:01:52.96\00:01:55.78 and yet He is patient with them 00:01:55.81\00:01:57.83 and He shows them what God is like. 00:01:57.86\00:02:01.88 Now speaking of God's character here in the story particularly, 00:02:01.91\00:02:04.88 we read that Jesus was not very happy or pleased 00:02:04.91\00:02:08.63 with these actions and it says that, 00:02:08.66\00:02:11.21 you know, that He had a whip, 00:02:11.24\00:02:15.05 doesn't say that He whipped him. Yeah. 00:02:15.08\00:02:16.74 But we often have this picture of Jesus, 00:02:16.77\00:02:20.12 you know, just whipping everybody 00:02:20.15\00:02:22.05 and just this feature of just angry at the people, 00:02:22.08\00:02:27.36 is that an accurate depiction of the character of Jesus? 00:02:27.39\00:02:31.83 I think it's really important to keep in mind 00:02:31.86\00:02:34.21 that God meets people where they are. 00:02:34.24\00:02:36.80 And children need a strong parent. 00:02:36.83\00:02:41.46 School teachers know that if you start the year 00:02:41.49\00:02:44.71 being sweet and nice, the kids may run all over you. 00:02:44.74\00:02:48.22 So parent or a teacher starts out sometime stern 00:02:48.25\00:02:53.10 and so on to set the boundaries, set the structure, 00:02:53.13\00:02:56.87 but when people are used to that structure, 00:02:56.90\00:02:59.32 when kids grow up and feel comfortable in that structure, 00:02:59.35\00:03:01.81 the parents then can back off 00:03:01.84\00:03:04.64 and if you have 30-year-old child 00:03:04.67\00:03:06.44 and you're still yelling at them and telling them what to do, 00:03:06.47\00:03:10.77 that's probably not appropriate anymore. 00:03:10.80\00:03:13.04 And I think God wants to grow people. 00:03:13.07\00:03:16.40 He doesn't want to be threatening. 00:03:16.43\00:03:18.13 He doesn't want to be judgmental and so on. 00:03:18.16\00:03:21.50 He wants to love us and receive love in return, 00:03:21.53\00:03:24.80 that's the ultimate goal. 00:03:24.83\00:03:26.20 God is love from beginning to end of the great controversy, 00:03:26.23\00:03:30.09 you know, throughout history, that's what it's all about. 00:03:30.12\00:03:33.45 And yet God meets people 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.45 where they need Him at different times. 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.73 And here, this temple needed cleansing. 00:03:37.76\00:03:42.39 It doesn't tell us Jesus hit anybody, 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.21 but apparently just a look in his face was enough to feel, 00:03:44.24\00:03:46.83 so that I'm getting out of here. 00:03:46.86\00:03:50.63 I've got to run. 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.03 And because the temple is cleansed, 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.98 now the children could come to Him 00:03:54.01\00:03:55.85 and it changed the whole atmosphere. 00:03:55.88\00:04:00.68 So going back to verse 19 00:04:00.71\00:04:03.06 where Jesus answered them and He says, 00:04:03.09\00:04:04.83 "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." 00:04:04.86\00:04:08.22 And then verse 21, it's the narrator that he says, 00:04:08.25\00:04:12.59 "But he was speaking of the temple of His body." 00:04:12.62\00:04:15.38 So what is he talking about, his death and his resurrection? 00:04:15.41\00:04:19.70 Oh, yeah. That's a good point. 00:04:19.73\00:04:21.22 I'm glad you pointed that out because I was just saying 00:04:21.25\00:04:24.30 that there are so many foreshadows of the cross. 00:04:24.33\00:04:27.52 There is another one. 00:04:27.55\00:04:28.92 Destroy this temple, my body 00:04:28.95\00:04:31.15 and I will raise it up in three days. 00:04:31.18\00:04:32.76 That's a clear reference to the death 00:04:32.79\00:04:34.63 and resurrection of Jesus. 00:04:34.66\00:04:36.28 So John is pretty plainly hinting to us. 00:04:36.31\00:04:39.17 Hey, don't take this as a surface story, 00:04:39.20\00:04:42.07 go a little bit deeper and see that it's all about the cross, 00:04:42.10\00:04:46.06 see that there is a deeper significance to it. 00:04:46.09\00:04:49.43 So obviously Jesus was not there, 00:04:49.46\00:04:51.21 you know, pointing to the building saying, 00:04:51.24\00:04:53.97 you know, destroy this temple, 00:04:54.00\00:04:55.37 but rather He was referring to His--Himself. 00:04:55.40\00:04:58.57 It's the whole issue of misunderstanding. 00:04:58.60\00:05:00.44 We handle in the couple of programs ago 00:05:00.47\00:05:02.74 where the people in the story take Jesus literally 00:05:02.77\00:05:06.66 and don't catch the deeper spiritual meaning 00:05:06.69\00:05:08.87 that John is pointing them. 00:05:08.90\00:05:10.33 And the people-- and the people here, 00:05:10.36\00:05:12.80 the Jews just did not see that. Right. 00:05:12.83\00:05:16.68 They just--again their focus was on the building, 00:05:16.71\00:05:21.81 the material structure and Jesus was saying, 00:05:21.84\00:05:25.49 "You know, it's really about, 00:05:25.52\00:05:27.76 you know, again Me and the miracle is that 00:05:27.79\00:05:34.76 on the first day or on the third day." 00:05:34.79\00:05:37.99 You got it? Yeah. 00:05:38.02\00:05:39.39 "The body would be resurrected." 00:05:39.42\00:05:40.79 Well, it goes back to the old story 00:05:40.82\00:05:42.23 that the physical presence of Jesus 00:05:42.26\00:05:45.09 didn't have the impact 00:05:45.12\00:05:46.49 that the Holy Spirit did later on 00:05:46.52\00:05:48.39 in changing people's minds and hearts. 00:05:48.42\00:05:50.40 The people who are actually there often didn't get it. 00:05:50.43\00:05:52.69 And even the disciples didn't get it. 00:05:52.72\00:05:54.56 So we shouldn't feel disadvantaged 00:05:54.59\00:05:56.60 that we don't have the physical presence of Jesus 00:05:56.63\00:05:59.05 'cause the Holy Spirit can give us 00:05:59.08\00:06:00.45 an even deeper conviction than they had. 00:06:00.48\00:06:04.34 Let's go on to the last part of this chapter 00:06:04.37\00:06:06.46 'cause I think it's-- it's three verses 00:06:06.49\00:06:08.36 that are easily overlooked, 00:06:08.39\00:06:09.88 they're tremendously interesting. 00:06:09.91\00:06:11.64 Verse 23. 00:06:11.67\00:06:13.81 "Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover 00:06:13.84\00:06:16.06 during the Feast, many believed in his name 00:06:16.09\00:06:18.37 when they saw the signs which he did. 00:06:18.40\00:06:20.88 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them 00:06:20.91\00:06:23.15 because he knew all men, 00:06:23.18\00:06:25.18 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, 00:06:25.21\00:06:28.66 for He knew what was in man." 00:06:28.69\00:06:31.14 Now here's an interesting piece here. 00:06:31.17\00:06:33.22 This is what I call a dual-directional passage. 00:06:33.25\00:06:35.91 There's a lot of them in John. 00:06:35.94\00:06:37.91 The wedding of Cana is one of those too, 00:06:37.94\00:06:40.02 because we've already seen that it builds on Chapter 1 00:06:40.05\00:06:43.54 that series of days that ends in the wedding, 00:06:43.57\00:06:46.17 but it also sets the table for the temple cleansing 00:06:46.20\00:06:49.42 which are all cross related. 00:06:49.45\00:06:51.52 So the wedding of Cana kind of links two different things. 00:06:51.55\00:06:55.68 Here, this passage, verses 23-25 is the link 00:06:55.71\00:06:59.51 between the temple cleansing and the Nicodemus story 00:06:59.54\00:07:03.40 which we'll talk about in the next program in Chapter 3. 00:07:03.43\00:07:06.51 And here it says, 00:07:06.54\00:07:07.91 "A lot of people saw Jesus doing miraculous things in Jerusalem 00:07:07.94\00:07:12.72 and they believed in Him." 00:07:12.75\00:07:14.44 But here's a little piece that you don't get in translation. 00:07:14.47\00:07:18.03 It says in the Greek. 00:07:18.06\00:07:19.77 "Since they believed in His name, 00:07:19.80\00:07:22.56 but Jesus did not believe in them." 00:07:22.59\00:07:24.93 He uses the same word for belief. 00:07:24.96\00:07:27.72 The English translation usually changes it. 00:07:27.75\00:07:31.50 It's the idea, these people believed in Jesus, 00:07:31.53\00:07:34.16 but it was inadequate faith. 00:07:34.19\00:07:36.29 It wasn't a full rich deep faith. 00:07:36.32\00:07:39.46 They believed because of miracles. 00:07:39.49\00:07:41.81 They believed for that outward stuff 00:07:41.84\00:07:43.56 what we were just talking about. 00:07:43.59\00:07:44.96 You know, that they saw what Jesus did in the temple 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.24 and instead of seeing the spiritual meaning of it, 00:07:47.27\00:07:49.55 they just said, "Oh, you know, 00:07:49.58\00:07:51.01 he is gonna destroy this building 00:07:51.04\00:07:52.41 and build it in three days." 00:07:52.44\00:07:53.81 Now how did Jesus not believe in them 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.90 'cause I've not heard of that translation? 00:07:55.93\00:07:58.43 Well, the translation I have here 00:07:58.46\00:08:00.42 is He did not entrust himself to them. 00:08:00.45\00:08:03.45 You see, in the Greek, it's a play on words. 00:08:03.48\00:08:06.10 They believed in Him, but He doesn't believe in them, 00:08:06.13\00:08:08.39 kind of it's the surface meaning, 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.30 and what is He did not trust their faith. 00:08:10.33\00:08:13.09 He did not trust that their belief in Him. 00:08:13.12\00:08:15.90 It was only based in miracles. 00:08:15.93\00:08:17.52 They didn't know who He really was. 00:08:17.55\00:08:19.80 They didn't know that those miracles 00:08:19.83\00:08:21.74 would lead to the cross. 00:08:21.77\00:08:23.39 The cleansing of the temple would lead to the cross. 00:08:23.42\00:08:26.35 They didn't want to go to the cross. 00:08:26.38\00:08:28.35 They didn't want to take up their cross, you see. 00:08:28.38\00:08:30.83 So that they were believing in was a political Messiah 00:08:30.86\00:08:34.34 who would cleanse temples and defeat Roman armies 00:08:34.37\00:08:37.38 and bring them lots of money, you know, and fame and power. 00:08:37.41\00:08:42.65 Yeah, money, fame, power, relationships, 00:08:42.68\00:08:45.65 that's what people are all about, 00:08:45.68\00:08:47.10 that's not what Jesus came to bring. 00:08:47.13\00:08:49.29 He came to bring something deeper. 00:08:49.32\00:08:51.19 It's a picture of God and who He is, 00:08:51.22\00:08:55.04 and of a relationship with God that could change their lives. 00:08:55.07\00:08:59.03 So in John, there's three types of faith. 00:08:59.06\00:09:03.06 There's a faith that is inadequate. 00:09:03.09\00:09:08.51 And Nicodemus represents that kind of faith. 00:09:08.54\00:09:10.88 There's a partial faith, a good faith that's kind of immature, 00:09:10.91\00:09:16.09 that's what the disciples had after the wedding of Cana. 00:09:16.12\00:09:18.57 They say this guy is really special, 00:09:18.60\00:09:20.50 but they still don't know the cross. 00:09:20.53\00:09:22.36 Then there's full faith that understands 00:09:22.39\00:09:25.44 the whole picture of Jesus. 00:09:25.47\00:09:26.84 It's mature, it's lasting, it's unshakeable. 00:09:26.87\00:09:30.22 That's the faith of the Samaritan woman 00:09:30.25\00:09:33.17 in the end comes to demonstrate and many others in the gospel. 00:09:33.20\00:09:36.71 Mary, for example. Mary and Martha. 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.12 Yeah, but Jesus says, what the Bible says 00:09:39.15\00:09:41.98 that Jesus knew what was in men 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.90 and probably why He didn't trust them. 00:09:43.93\00:09:46.32 So does Jesus know what is in me, 00:09:46.35\00:09:48.91 what is in my heart I spoke? 00:09:48.94\00:09:50.31 Yes, that's right. 00:09:50.34\00:09:52.33 For the rabbis, here is something I wrote down here. 00:09:52.36\00:09:56.02 For the rabbis, there were seven things 00:09:56.05\00:09:58.49 that no human being could know. 00:09:58.52\00:10:00.54 The day of their death, the day of consolation, 00:10:00.57\00:10:03.89 in other words when God would bring about the end. 00:10:03.92\00:10:07.90 The depths of judgment, one's reward, 00:10:07.93\00:10:10.48 the time when the kingdom would be restored, 00:10:10.51\00:10:12.66 the time when the Romans would be destroyed 00:10:12.69\00:10:15.16 and what is within another. 00:10:15.19\00:10:18.16 The rabbi says, "It's impossible for a human being to know 00:10:18.19\00:10:21.86 what's inside another human being." 00:10:21.89\00:10:24.45 Yet Jesus knows that. 00:10:24.48\00:10:26.78 He has already shown that 00:10:26.81\00:10:28.18 with Nathaniel in the previous chapter. 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.28 He knew where Nathaniel was 00:10:30.31\00:10:32.19 and what he was thinking before Jesus ever met him. 00:10:32.22\00:10:36.50 He knew what was in them. 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.39 He didn't entrust himself to these people 00:10:38.42\00:10:40.26 'cause he knew their faiths were shallow, 00:10:40.29\00:10:42.66 it was just a sham, it was just something 00:10:42.69\00:10:45.34 they were excited about these miracles 00:10:45.37\00:10:47.30 and so they were gonna believe. 00:10:47.33\00:10:49.34 And perhaps that's a good place to draw a lesson, 00:10:49.37\00:10:53.35 as we come to the close of this chapter. 00:10:53.38\00:10:56.24 Jesus knows what's inside of us. 00:10:56.27\00:10:59.92 Now that maybe scary to someone. 00:10:59.95\00:11:01.56 Let me show you a different side of that. 00:11:01.59\00:11:03.68 If Jesus knows what's inside of you 00:11:03.71\00:11:07.68 then nothing you could tell Him would be a surprise. 00:11:07.71\00:11:12.48 And you see, confession of sin 00:11:12.51\00:11:15.94 is simply telling the truth about yourself. 00:11:15.97\00:11:20.25 It's simply saying, "Yep, I messed up. 00:11:20.28\00:11:23.61 Yeah, I've been going my own way." 00:11:23.64\00:11:26.25 It's telling what is actually true. 00:11:26.28\00:11:28.64 Now I've discovered 00:11:28.67\00:11:30.50 and people have sometimes confessed 00:11:30.53\00:11:32.14 that it's possible to even lie to God in prayer. 00:11:32.17\00:11:35.94 You know, you come to church and you're all upset, 00:11:35.97\00:11:38.58 the family's been a mess, you know, and so on, 00:11:38.61\00:11:40.72 and then suddenly you get to church, 00:11:40.75\00:11:42.12 "Oh, it's time for the opening prayer." 00:11:42.15\00:11:43.52 You have the opening prayer. 00:11:43.55\00:11:44.92 You run up there with a big smile on your face. 00:11:44.95\00:11:46.53 It's good to be here. 00:11:46.56\00:11:47.98 Let's thank the Lord for this wonderful day. 00:11:48.01\00:11:50.43 That's baloney, you know. 00:11:50.46\00:11:52.40 It's not in your heart whatsoever. 00:11:52.43\00:11:54.27 You see, so we can lie to God even in prayer 00:11:54.30\00:11:57.67 and it tells us, if Jesus knows us 00:11:57.70\00:12:00.42 it's safe to talk to Him about what's inside, 00:12:00.45\00:12:04.86 it safe to confess our sins. 00:12:04.89\00:12:06.64 He is not gonna turn on us for knowing the truth, 00:12:06.67\00:12:09.88 He already knows the truth. 00:12:09.91\00:12:12.07 So that's in my advantage. Yes. 00:12:12.10\00:12:15.54 Quickly, if that's the case, 00:12:15.57\00:12:17.15 why would I have to confess to God if He already knows? 00:12:17.18\00:12:19.73 Oh, because I need to, I need to come clean. 00:12:19.76\00:12:23.27 It's living a false life that is the thing 00:12:23.30\00:12:26.04 that keeps us away from God. 00:12:26.07\00:12:27.44 And when we confess our sins, when we open ourselves up, 00:12:27.47\00:12:30.84 we allow Him to cleanse us. 00:12:30.87\00:12:32.78 It's giving Him permission to enter our lives 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.03 and be part of it. 00:12:35.06\00:12:36.43 If you're holding back information from another person, 00:12:36.46\00:12:38.97 that's not a trusting relationship, is it? 00:12:39.00\00:12:41.51 So intimacy requires, we'd be totally honest with each other. 00:12:41.54\00:12:45.38 And that's what Jesus is inviting here. 00:12:45.41\00:12:48.00 He knows all about us. 00:12:48.03\00:12:49.40 He is inviting us to know all about Him 00:12:49.43\00:12:51.27 and to reveal ourselves to Him, 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.79 so we can have depth of relationship. 00:12:52.82\00:12:55.03 And that invitation from God is coming, 00:12:55.06\00:12:58.02 let us reason together and let's talk about this 00:12:58.05\00:13:01.01 and I will forgive your sins. 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.07 And, friends, I pray that you too 00:13:03.10\00:13:05.31 can come to Jesus as you are. 00:13:05.34\00:13:07.56 He knows who you are 00:13:07.59\00:13:09.01 and He's just more than willing to give you 00:13:09.04\00:13:11.69 that what you need. 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.09 May God bless you. 00:13:13.12\00:13:14.49
