Hello friends and welcome again 00:00:21.07\00:00:22.44 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.47\00:00:24.50 We are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:24.53\00:00:26.52 and today we are picking up on Chapter 2, 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.44 the last part of Chapter 2 and we are in verses 12-25. 00:00:28.47\00:00:34.49 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, 00:00:34.52\00:00:36.22 he is the Dean of Religion at Loma Linda University. 00:00:36.25\00:00:41.13 And welcome again, Dr. Paulien. 00:00:41.16\00:00:42.84 Thank you. It's good to be with you. 00:00:42.87\00:00:44.24 You, I can just imagine you must be very busy. 00:00:44.27\00:00:47.54 You are a scholar, you've written several books. 00:00:47.57\00:00:51.48 Tell me what do you do on your time off? 00:00:51.51\00:00:55.59 That's kind of a painful question 00:00:55.62\00:00:57.05 because I am probably a very boring person, really. 00:00:57.08\00:01:00.59 I really enjoy scholarship 00:01:00.62\00:01:03.05 and I really enjoy studying the Bible 00:01:03.08\00:01:05.66 and if I just have spare time on my own, 00:01:05.69\00:01:08.63 I happily go back there and enjoy the time that I spent. 00:01:08.66\00:01:14.17 But a couple of times a month I force myself 00:01:14.20\00:01:17.54 to go out and play around the golf 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.73 and I do enjoy that too. 00:01:19.76\00:01:21.22 But I just, it's important to be with people, 00:01:21.25\00:01:26.21 spend some time, exercise, fresh air, 00:01:26.24\00:01:29.54 sunshine all of that. 00:01:29.57\00:01:31.56 I do enjoy exercise, do a lot of walking 00:01:31.59\00:01:34.54 but often I am reading when I walk 00:01:34.57\00:01:36.64 because that's a good way to get in some more understanding 00:01:36.67\00:01:41.39 and I like spending time with my family. 00:01:41.42\00:01:43.43 I have two adult children living with me, 00:01:43.46\00:01:46.85 they are in their mid 20s and finishing up education, 00:01:46.88\00:01:50.40 getting ready for life things like that so. 00:01:50.43\00:01:53.28 Yeah, that's sort of my boring life. 00:01:53.31\00:01:55.43 I do like to travel though in this ministry 00:01:55.46\00:01:57.97 and to get a chance of seeing-- 00:01:58.00\00:01:59.37 So what I understand is your idea of fun is studying? 00:01:59.40\00:02:02.97 Well, you know, I guess there's a difference in fun and joy. 00:02:03.00\00:02:08.74 Fun is something that stops whenever the fun stops, 00:02:08.77\00:02:12.98 but joy is something you can have all the time 00:02:13.01\00:02:15.10 and study brings a lot of joy. 00:02:15.13\00:02:17.24 It may be just isn't so much fun, 00:02:17.27\00:02:18.64 but you can enjoy anything if you put time to it 00:02:18.67\00:02:21.84 and really get good added invest in it. 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.55 And if Bible study is a great need, 00:02:24.58\00:02:27.05 I would encourage people to really get into it 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.85 and you'll find it gets more and more-- 00:02:29.88\00:02:31.36 the kind of things I am talking about here 00:02:31.39\00:02:33.72 may seem right over the top to many people, 00:02:33.75\00:02:36.67 but they came one at a time through careful study 00:02:36.70\00:02:40.59 and the more you learn, it's like a computer game 00:02:40.62\00:02:43.68 that when you break a couple of lower levels 00:02:43.71\00:02:45.62 it brings you into higher levels 00:02:45.65\00:02:47.08 that are even more interesting. 00:02:47.11\00:02:48.60 So I do really enjoy what I am doing. 00:02:48.63\00:02:51.39 And it's not like you are studying the stock market, 00:02:51.42\00:02:54.67 you are studying the word of God. 00:02:54.70\00:02:56.07 And as an administrator I am not studying for my job 00:02:56.10\00:02:59.37 so much anymore, so the study is something 00:02:59.40\00:03:01.76 I turn to for that alone time since it's very special to me. 00:03:01.79\00:03:05.61 All right, Well, speaking of study 00:03:05.64\00:03:07.77 what are we studying today? 00:03:07.80\00:03:09.45 John 2:12-25, it's the story of Jesus cleansing the temple. 00:03:09.48\00:03:15.80 Okay. So where shall we start. 00:03:15.83\00:03:18.28 Why don't we read the passage? Verse 12. 00:03:18.31\00:03:20.67 May be up to verse 22. 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.28 Okay, So from verses 12 to 22. 00:03:22.31\00:03:25.99 "After this He went down to Capernaum, 00:03:26.02\00:03:28.18 He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples 00:03:28.21\00:03:30.86 and they did not stay there many days. 00:03:30.89\00:03:33.14 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.44 and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:03:35.47\00:03:37.98 And He found in the temple those who sold 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.80 oxen and sheep and doves, 00:03:39.83\00:03:41.64 and the money changers doing business. 00:03:41.67\00:03:44.69 When He had made a whip of cords, 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.34 He drove them all out of the temple, 00:03:47.37\00:03:49.58 with the sheep and the oxen, poured out the changers' money 00:03:49.61\00:03:53.84 and overturned the tables. 00:03:53.87\00:03:55.86 And He said to those who sold doves, 00:03:55.89\00:03:57.91 'Take these things away. 00:03:57.94\00:03:59.57 Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise.' 00:03:59.60\00:04:03.49 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, 00:04:03.52\00:04:06.04 'Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.' 00:04:06.07\00:04:09.05 So when the Jews--so the Jews answered and said to Him, 00:04:09.08\00:04:12.74 'What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?' 00:04:12.77\00:04:17.15 Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, 00:04:17.28\00:04:20.21 and in three days I will raise it up." 00:04:20.24\00:04:22.90 Then the Jews said, 'It has taken forty six years 00:04:22.93\00:04:25.99 to build this temple, 00:04:26.02\00:04:27.54 and You will raise it up in three days?' 00:04:27.57\00:04:30.01 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 00:04:30.04\00:04:33.28 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, 00:04:33.31\00:04:35.36 His disciples remembered that He had said this to them 00:04:35.39\00:04:39.29 and they believed the Scriptures 00:04:39.32\00:04:41.30 and the word which Jesus had said." 00:04:41.33\00:04:44.90 Now, to read until the 25th verse? Little bit later. 00:04:44.93\00:04:48.84 Okay. Yeah. 00:04:48.87\00:04:50.46 You notice it starts out in Capernaum. 00:04:50.49\00:04:53.37 Jesus is born and raised in Nazareth 00:04:53.40\00:04:55.66 which is up in the hill country of Galilee 00:04:55.69\00:04:58.37 and then Capernaum is a fishing village 00:04:58.40\00:05:01.25 right on the shore of the Sea of Galilee itself 00:05:01.28\00:05:03.65 and it's like 1700 feet, 600 meters between those two. 00:05:03.68\00:05:09.94 So Nazareth is like 400 meters high 00:05:09.97\00:05:14.27 and the Sea of Galilee is like 200 meters below sea level 00:05:14.30\00:05:18.66 so it's like a 600 meter difference between those. 00:05:18.69\00:05:21.92 So Jesus evidently and His family has moved 00:05:21.95\00:05:24.26 to Capernaum which is where Peter and John have lived 00:05:24.29\00:05:27.88 and exercised their life as fisherman. 00:05:27.91\00:05:31.44 So from Capernaum like most people would do in that day, 00:05:31.47\00:05:34.27 they went down to Jerusalem. 00:05:34.30\00:05:36.05 It's may be 150 kilometers for the Passover service. 00:05:36.08\00:05:41.67 Now tell us more about this temple? 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.69 This is what's called Herod's temple 00:05:45.72\00:05:47.92 and there's a little detail in the story 00:05:47.95\00:05:49.66 that mentions that it was 46 years under construction. 00:05:49.69\00:05:54.29 And we know when that construction began 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.83 it was Herod's, around 20 to 19 B.C. 00:05:56.86\00:06:03.79 was, I think it was Herod's 18th year 00:06:03.82\00:06:05.70 is when the construction started. 00:06:05.73\00:06:07.62 And you count 46 years from that you come to 28 A.D. 00:06:07.65\00:06:12.15 so this is Passover time around 28 A.D. 00:06:12.18\00:06:16.67 in our reckoning that this occurs. 00:06:16.70\00:06:20.16 There were a number of temples in Old Testament time, 00:06:20.19\00:06:22.66 you had the tent Tabernacle of Moses, 00:06:22.69\00:06:25.74 you had Solomon's temple, you had Ezekiel's temple 00:06:25.77\00:06:29.96 which he saw in vision and you had Zerubbabel's temple 00:06:29.99\00:06:33.13 that was built after return from Babylon 00:06:33.16\00:06:36.21 and that was a very poor copy of Solomon's. 00:06:36.24\00:06:39.35 Herod was trying to build a temple 00:06:39.38\00:06:41.78 just as magnificent as Solomon's temple. 00:06:41.81\00:06:45.50 Interestingly enough the construction wasn't finished 00:06:45.53\00:06:48.20 until 63 A.D., seven years before its destruction. 00:06:48.23\00:06:53.07 So it's 80 years to build this magnificent temple, 00:06:53.10\00:06:56.31 it must have been really something. 00:06:56.34\00:06:58.82 It wasn't completely finished then. 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.82 No, evidently it was not completely finished, 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.17 there may have been parts that weren't fully decorated 00:07:03.20\00:07:06.16 and still planned and so forth, 00:07:06.19\00:07:09.24 but the very platform for that temple 00:07:09.27\00:07:11.69 is some of the largest stones 00:07:11.72\00:07:13.59 anyone has ever found, that's amazing. 00:07:13.62\00:07:16.53 This is an interesting scene we read here 00:07:16.56\00:07:18.85 that, that in the temple there were animals in there. 00:07:18.88\00:07:23.18 We see that verse 14 says, 00:07:23.21\00:07:25.92 there were oxen and sheep and doves 00:07:25.95\00:07:28.25 but not only animals there, 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.65 but they were actually been sold, 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.23 so there seems to be some kind of business deal here, 00:07:31.26\00:07:34.15 some kind of money transactions. 00:07:34.18\00:07:36.64 And it says here, "The money changers doing business." 00:07:36.67\00:07:41.53 Jesus was not happy about that. 00:07:41.56\00:07:43.89 What's the deal here? 00:07:43.92\00:07:46.97 Why are they selling animals 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.59 and why does Jesus come in here and just drive them out? 00:07:50.62\00:07:54.51 Well, people are expected to bring animals 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.99 for sacrifices to the temple 00:07:57.02\00:07:59.78 and so that there would be some animals there as to be expected, 00:07:59.81\00:08:03.88 but what would often happen is, 00:08:03.91\00:08:06.56 the priest would reject the animals 00:08:06.59\00:08:08.29 that the people brought. 00:08:08.32\00:08:09.69 Maybe they would be injured in some way, 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.19 they weren't perfect, 00:08:11.22\00:08:12.59 they weren't the right color, etcetera 00:08:12.62\00:08:14.47 and they were making profit out of selling animals 00:08:14.50\00:08:18.59 to the people for their sacrifices. 00:08:18.62\00:08:21.49 And they might take a person's animal. 00:08:21.52\00:08:23.47 They might exchange it for a fee 00:08:23.50\00:08:24.87 and then sell that animal for fee later on. 00:08:24.90\00:08:27.63 And it was quite a financial racket. 00:08:27.66\00:08:30.40 The interesting thing about it is 00:08:30.43\00:08:32.36 you have two parts to the temple, 00:08:32.39\00:08:33.95 there's a temple building and the inner courts, 00:08:33.98\00:08:37.44 which is for the Jews only and there was a wall around those, 00:08:37.47\00:08:40.63 so that Gentiles couldn't go in. 00:08:40.66\00:08:42.61 Then there's the outer courts where the Gentiles could be, 00:08:42.64\00:08:45.77 the court of the Gentiles and so at least half of it 00:08:45.80\00:08:49.01 was for the Gentiles. 00:08:49.04\00:08:50.65 That's the only part of the temple complex 00:08:50.68\00:08:53.06 that Gentiles could go to, 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.65 that's the place where all this merchandising was going. 00:08:54.68\00:08:57.90 So if the Gentile want to come and pray they couldn't do it, 00:08:57.93\00:09:02.14 it was just crazy marketplace, you see. 00:09:02.17\00:09:05.35 So it was really, it was definitely hindering 00:09:05.38\00:09:08.13 the Gentiles from coming to the true God 00:09:08.16\00:09:10.75 and it was also distracting for the Jewish worshippers 00:09:10.78\00:09:14.45 as well to hear all these noises and chaos going on. 00:09:14.48\00:09:17.45 Was this part of their job 00:09:17.48\00:09:18.85 or was this more like corruption involved? 00:09:18.88\00:09:21.54 Definitely, corruption involved. 00:09:21.57\00:09:23.32 The priests were using this to make a lot of money. 00:09:23.35\00:09:26.19 Now I tell you when Jesus broke up that trade 00:09:26.22\00:09:29.79 it was a knife right into 00:09:29.82\00:09:31.81 the heart of their financial base. 00:09:31.84\00:09:34.52 So it was--in this case was actually a political act 00:09:34.55\00:09:37.71 that was threatening the very foundation of the system 00:09:37.74\00:09:41.49 that they had put into place. 00:09:41.52\00:09:43.77 Jesus' goal was never political. 00:09:43.80\00:09:47.58 Jesus didn't believe that political change was going 00:09:47.61\00:09:51.31 to change people's hearts but there were times 00:09:51.34\00:09:54.45 when political change was needed to open the way 00:09:54.48\00:09:57.62 for people to worship and to have freedom of worship 00:09:57.65\00:10:01.88 and Jesus seems to have acted in that way here. 00:10:01.91\00:10:05.72 So Herod builds this temple, it's a magnificent building, 00:10:05.75\00:10:10.17 but it's not serving its true purpose, 00:10:10.20\00:10:12.34 it's serving political purposes and financial purposes 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.32 and Jesus doesn't hesitate to speak out. 00:10:16.35\00:10:20.36 This helps us understand something special 00:10:20.39\00:10:23.15 about the Gospel of John. 00:10:23.18\00:10:25.24 This incident actually occurred, it's a real story. 00:10:25.27\00:10:29.52 So what was going on when Jesus did this? 00:10:29.55\00:10:33.84 It was a prophetic protest. 00:10:33.87\00:10:35.55 As a prophet He comes into the temple and He says, 00:10:35.58\00:10:38.93 "This is a house of prayer. 00:10:38.96\00:10:40.95 It should not be used for merchandise." 00:10:40.98\00:10:43.07 And so He is protesting 00:10:43.10\00:10:44.90 that the religious leaders of His day have undermined 00:10:44.93\00:10:48.08 the core of their faith by their actions 00:10:48.11\00:10:50.49 and He's seeking to change that. 00:10:50.52\00:10:52.89 But John, remember? Yeah. 00:10:52.92\00:10:55.52 The stories are never just stories. 00:10:55.55\00:11:00.30 It's not just well, this happened in Jesus' life 00:11:00.33\00:11:02.32 and then that happened. 00:11:02.35\00:11:03.72 For John, these are always parables. 00:11:03.75\00:11:05.86 They always have a deeper spiritual meaning. 00:11:05.89\00:11:07.97 So in Jesus' day there's a prophetic protest 00:11:08.00\00:11:12.71 against the corruption of the temple, 00:11:12.74\00:11:16.28 but for John, it has a deeper meaning. 00:11:16.31\00:11:20.01 Jesus is driving out the animals, 00:11:20.04\00:11:22.87 the sacrificial animals. 00:11:22.90\00:11:24.31 He's driving them out of the temple 00:11:24.34\00:11:26.06 and what's left in the temple to sacrifice 00:11:26.09\00:11:30.20 when He drives the animals out, His body. 00:11:30.23\00:11:34.98 Verse 19 to 21. 00:11:35.01\00:11:37.28 I am assuming because Jesus is the Lamb of God. 00:11:37.31\00:11:40.93 Exactly. That's already been told us in Chapter 1. Right. 00:11:40.96\00:11:44.39 But here it says, the temple is His body. 00:11:44.42\00:11:48.44 We'll see verses 19-21, Jesus answered them, 00:11:48.47\00:11:51.36 "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." 00:11:51.39\00:11:55.80 It's another one of His misunderstanding text. 00:11:55.83\00:11:58.29 They think destroying these buildings 00:11:58.32\00:12:00.95 that took 46 years so far 00:12:00.98\00:12:03.17 and I will raise them up in three days. 00:12:03.20\00:12:05.04 The Jews replied, 00:12:05.07\00:12:06.44 "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple 00:12:06.47\00:12:08.46 and you are going to raise it in three days?" 00:12:08.49\00:12:11.29 Misunderstanding, they didn't get His point. 00:12:11.32\00:12:13.97 But the temple here, the narrator breaks in, 00:12:14.00\00:12:16.69 "The temple He had spoken of was His body." 00:12:16.72\00:12:21.64 And after He was raised from the dead 00:12:21.67\00:12:23.47 the disciples recalled what He had said 00:12:23.50\00:12:25.92 then they believed the scripture 00:12:25.95\00:12:27.42 and the words that Jesus had spoken. 00:12:27.45\00:12:29.61 So Jesus signals by His words 00:12:29.64\00:12:31.83 what John is going to make of the story. 00:12:31.86\00:12:34.28 Jesus is replacing the temple and its services with Himself. 00:12:34.31\00:12:38.31 His sacrifice on the cross would overturn all other sacrifices. 00:12:38.34\00:12:43.30 In other words, what the temple 00:12:43.33\00:12:44.80 was pointing to was actually Him. 00:12:44.83\00:12:47.94 The glory of the temple 00:12:47.97\00:12:49.48 was the presence of God inside a building. 00:12:49.51\00:12:52.22 The glory of Jesus 00:12:52.25\00:12:53.92 was the presence of God inside of Himself. 00:12:53.95\00:12:57.43 The coming of Jesus is all about God 00:12:57.46\00:13:00.44 and it's about the character of God. 00:13:00.47\00:13:02.41 He has come to show us what God is really like. 00:13:02.44\00:13:05.84 The temple was intended to do that, but it failed. 00:13:05.87\00:13:10.24 If all the people saw was this buying and selling, 00:13:10.27\00:13:13.13 then clearly temple is not achieving its purpose. 00:13:13.16\00:13:17.26 And so Jesus replaces that system 00:13:17.29\00:13:20.72 with a clearer system, His own body. 00:13:20.75\00:13:24.12 His own self. 00:13:24.15\00:13:25.52 He came to show us what God is like 00:13:25.55\00:13:27.67 and it's at the cross where the body of Jesus, 00:13:27.70\00:13:31.02 and the blood of Jesus is shed. 00:13:31.05\00:13:32.42 That's the place where it most clearly happens. 00:13:32.45\00:13:35.29 And the pride too was in the temple, 00:13:35.32\00:13:37.98 the material, temple, 00:13:38.01\00:13:39.59 rather than the spiritual focus on the Son of God. 00:13:39.62\00:13:43.99 That's right. That's the way religion works. 00:13:44.02\00:13:47.55 Human beings put together a religion to honor God 00:13:47.58\00:13:51.98 who has done something special in their lives, 00:13:52.01\00:13:54.09 but then overtime they forget the reason that it started 00:13:54.12\00:13:56.85 and they start preserving the structure and the system 00:13:56.88\00:14:00.57 and so religion often has a tendency 00:14:00.60\00:14:02.59 to wander away from its original purpose. 00:14:02.62\00:14:05.93 Okay, well, friends, we want to continue 00:14:05.96\00:14:08.41 to study this gospel after this break. 00:14:08.44\00:14:10.66 So stay with us. 00:14:10.69\00:14:12.06
