Well, welcome back, we're studying the wedding at Cana. 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.32 And Dr. Paulien, I want to ask you a question. 00:00:04.35\00:00:06.89 And so what or why did Jesus go to the wedding? 00:00:06.92\00:00:11.07 Well, as I mentioned earlier 00:00:11.10\00:00:13.18 the two villages are fairly close together, 00:00:13.21\00:00:15.48 so evidently this is part of relationship stream 00:00:15.51\00:00:18.97 that Jesus would have known growing up in that area, 00:00:19.00\00:00:22.19 it's right near Nazareth. 00:00:22.22\00:00:24.54 But there's a tradition in the 3rd century 00:00:24.57\00:00:26.84 and a tradition doesn't make it right or wrong, 00:00:26.87\00:00:29.40 but it's interesting that people were thinking this way 00:00:29.43\00:00:31.66 a couple of hundred years after this story was written. 00:00:31.69\00:00:35.69 And the idea is that John was actually 00:00:35.72\00:00:39.37 the son of Mary's sister Salome 00:00:39.40\00:00:42.99 which would make John and Jesus first cousins 00:00:43.02\00:00:46.13 and that this was John's wedding. 00:00:46.16\00:00:48.25 And if that's true it just adds a delightful 00:00:48.28\00:00:50.25 little side trick to the story. 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.61 And it tells us if that's the case 00:00:52.64\00:00:55.44 Jesus was invited to the wedding, 00:00:55.47\00:00:57.31 but He brings along all these other guys, 00:00:57.34\00:01:00.53 you know, and they're eating and drinking too. 00:01:00.56\00:01:03.27 And maybe they were uninvited guests. 00:01:03.30\00:01:05.24 You think of Jesus didn't even know some of them personally 00:01:05.27\00:01:08.67 until a couple of days before. 00:01:08.70\00:01:10.48 So He brings His companions to the wedding 00:01:10.51\00:01:13.74 and that may be why Mary says to Him, 00:01:13.77\00:01:15.96 it's kind of like it's Your fault that we ran out, 00:01:15.99\00:01:17.91 so do something about it. 00:01:17.94\00:01:19.48 So you're saying that-- 00:01:19.51\00:01:20.88 Put a little heat on Jesus here. All right. 00:01:20.91\00:01:22.28 So you're saying that the author of the Gospel of John, 00:01:22.31\00:01:25.18 that's his wedding? 00:01:25.21\00:01:26.58 That is what the tradition suggests 00:01:26.61\00:01:28.46 and in ancient times we can only note 00:01:28.49\00:01:32.36 that people thought that way 00:01:32.39\00:01:33.76 and if it's true it adds a nice little touch to the story. 00:01:33.79\00:01:37.58 That's interesting, but again that's a tradition then. 00:01:37.61\00:01:39.91 Yeah. no, we're not-- 00:01:39.94\00:01:41.31 we don't know that to be the case, but it's not-- 00:01:41.34\00:01:43.62 there's nothing in the story here that says that's not so. 00:01:43.65\00:01:46.76 Okay, well, let's talk about the wine now 00:01:46.79\00:01:49.07 because some people are thinking here Jesus performs a miracle 00:01:49.10\00:01:53.57 and He turns water into an alcoholic beverage. 00:01:53.60\00:01:57.09 Tell us about that? 00:01:57.12\00:01:59.10 Okay, well, a lot of commentators 00:01:59.13\00:02:00.84 will come to this and say, this had to be alcoholic, okay. 00:02:00.87\00:02:05.22 And first of all the word wine is there 00:02:05.25\00:02:08.22 and second of all there's this issue of preservation. 00:02:08.25\00:02:12.40 They often preserved drinks for the use of alcohol. 00:02:12.43\00:02:16.17 And not only that, you know the whole idea of people, 00:02:16.20\00:02:21.40 you know, after drinking a while 00:02:21.43\00:02:22.80 you bring out the inferior stuff 00:02:22.83\00:02:24.20 because they don't noticed any more. 00:02:24.23\00:02:25.60 So all those details-- 00:02:25.63\00:02:27.00 lot of commentators would say it was alcoholic. 00:02:27.03\00:02:28.96 I would point out several things however. 00:02:28.99\00:02:31.53 First of all the word wine in Greek 00:02:31.56\00:02:34.26 does not require to be alcoholic. 00:02:34.29\00:02:36.87 Also the same word is used for grape juice 00:02:36.90\00:02:38.91 so the text does not push you in the other direction, 00:02:38.94\00:02:42.16 the text is open. 00:02:42.19\00:02:43.56 Second of all they had ways of preserving back then. 00:02:43.59\00:02:46.52 Concentrating the grape juice, 00:02:46.55\00:02:49.07 putting a little olive oil across the top 00:02:49.10\00:02:50.83 after all the air is out, it can last for years. 00:02:50.86\00:02:53.47 So you could bring out grape juice anytime of year, 00:02:53.50\00:02:57.50 but its reconstituted grape juice. 00:02:57.53\00:02:59.89 And the whole idea, the surprise of the caterer. 00:02:59.92\00:03:03.10 Could that happen without alcohol? 00:03:03.13\00:03:04.65 I think it could. 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.05 Because you could fresh stuff from Egypt anytime 00:03:06.08\00:03:09.08 but it would be really expensive. 00:03:09.11\00:03:11.17 And people just wouldn't do that 00:03:11.20\00:03:12.83 unless they were doing something special. 00:03:12.86\00:03:14.93 So if Jesus produces fresh grape juice at a time of year 00:03:14.96\00:03:20.40 when it's not available normally 00:03:20.43\00:03:22.24 that would be a big shock as well. 00:03:22.27\00:03:24.21 So the point is the story doesn't compel it to be wine 00:03:24.24\00:03:28.56 and I think those of us who have seen 00:03:28.59\00:03:30.21 the destruction that alcohol brings, 00:03:30.24\00:03:33.35 you know, this text doesn't compel us 00:03:33.38\00:03:35.48 otherwise is what I'm saying. 00:03:35.51\00:03:36.98 And I can't imagine Jesus bringing, 00:03:37.01\00:03:39.02 you know, the alcoholic beverages into, 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.09 you know, this party, right. 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.01 Now you told--you earlier you said that you would tell us-- 00:03:44.04\00:03:47.06 you made a promise. 00:03:47.09\00:03:48.46 What is the spiritual meaning of this story 00:03:48.49\00:03:51.15 in the Gospel of John? 00:03:51.18\00:03:53.00 Well, in verse 11 which I think we actually didn't read. 00:03:53.03\00:03:57.11 So maybe let me read it now. 00:03:57.14\00:03:58.51 It says, "This, the first of his miraculous signs, 00:03:58.54\00:04:02.42 Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. 00:04:02.45\00:04:04.65 He thus revealed his glory, 00:04:04.68\00:04:07.04 and the disciples put their faith in him." 00:04:07.07\00:04:10.37 So it calls this a sign and in the Old Testament signs 00:04:10.40\00:04:15.99 were the marks of a true prophet. 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.13 When Moses came to Egypt he threw down his rod 00:04:18.16\00:04:20.79 and it became a snake that was a sign 00:04:20.82\00:04:23.05 that God had called him to a special task. 00:04:23.08\00:04:26.08 When Saul was anointed by the Spirit, 00:04:26.11\00:04:29.61 he began speaking prophetically. 00:04:29.64\00:04:32.96 He began preaching, you see. 00:04:32.99\00:04:35.23 And so Saul does some unusual things to tell people, 00:04:35.26\00:04:40.17 yeah he's been anointed by the Lord, 00:04:40.20\00:04:41.80 something special has happened here. 00:04:41.83\00:04:43.89 So repeatedly in the Old Testament 00:04:43.92\00:04:46.98 we have this concept of signs indicating 00:04:47.01\00:04:49.86 somebody special has come. 00:04:49.89\00:04:51.75 So this is the first sign. 00:04:51.78\00:04:53.26 This is the first indication people had aside 00:04:53.29\00:04:56.09 from John's testimony in the first chapter. 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.61 So first indication that Jesus is more than just a man, 00:04:58.64\00:05:01.97 that He is a prophet and may be even more than a prophet. 00:05:02.00\00:05:05.76 So this story becomes more than just a story. 00:05:05.79\00:05:10.71 And you'll notice it says the third day. 00:05:10.74\00:05:14.24 Now there's been a series of days in Chapter 1. 00:05:14.27\00:05:17.89 On this day something happened, then on next day, next day. 00:05:17.92\00:05:20.52 Now the third day scholars have noticed they count seven days. 00:05:20.55\00:05:26.13 Now what's the most famous seven day period in history? 00:05:26.16\00:05:28.98 A week. Would be the week. 00:05:29.01\00:05:30.86 Okay. Creation. 00:05:30.89\00:05:32.26 See, it goes back to creation. 00:05:32.29\00:05:33.88 And what is the seventh day in creation? 00:05:33.91\00:05:36.51 It's the Sabbath. It's the Sabbath. 00:05:36.54\00:05:38.23 And what marks the entry of the Sabbath at creation? 00:05:38.26\00:05:43.26 A wedding. A wedding. Okay. 00:05:43.29\00:05:45.41 Adam and Eve, you see. Wow. 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.13 So when you see these little hints in the story, 00:05:47.16\00:05:49.87 you have a wedding on the seventh day 00:05:49.90\00:05:52.38 and there's other language here that reminds of creation. 00:05:52.41\00:05:55.95 For example you have seventh day, you have a woman, 00:05:55.98\00:05:59.24 you have a wedding and you have a creative word, 00:05:59.27\00:06:02.12 God said and it was done. 00:06:02.15\00:06:03.95 Here Jesus speaks and the water becomes wine. 00:06:03.98\00:06:06.97 So you have all these indications 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.82 that creation is in the back of the mind. 00:06:08.85\00:06:12.12 Jesus was a second Adam. 00:06:12.15\00:06:15.16 And the church becomes a new Eve according to Paul, 00:06:15.19\00:06:19.71 so that lies behind the story. 00:06:19.74\00:06:22.56 What power did Adam have? 00:06:22.59\00:06:24.70 He had the power to affect the fish of the sea, 00:06:24.73\00:06:28.97 the beast of the earth, 00:06:29.00\00:06:30.37 he had dominion over all these things. 00:06:30.40\00:06:31.99 What does he do later on? 00:06:32.02\00:06:34.47 He has a miraculous gift of fish. 00:06:34.50\00:06:37.48 When nobody can find any fish, Jesus brings fish into the net. 00:06:37.51\00:06:42.31 That's the power of Adam as Adam was intended to be. 00:06:42.34\00:06:45.50 He had dominion over the earth. 00:06:45.53\00:06:46.93 He had dominion over the storm. 00:06:46.96\00:06:49.28 So a deeper side to the story 00:06:49.31\00:06:52.26 is Jesus is the second Adam and a new creation. 00:06:52.29\00:06:55.85 He brings a new creation to this earth. 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.83 He's gonna overturn all the pain and the trials 00:06:57.86\00:07:00.49 and the suffering of the old creation 00:07:00.52\00:07:02.99 and now comes this new creation. 00:07:03.02\00:07:07.44 Another piece of the story is that turning water to wine 00:07:07.47\00:07:11.28 reminds of the story of Moses when he turned water into blood. 00:07:11.31\00:07:18.39 It also reminds of Elisha 00:07:18.42\00:07:20.17 who took the stale waters of Jericho 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.22 and made them fresh, you see. 00:07:22.25\00:07:24.82 So in this connection it's calling us 00:07:24.85\00:07:28.61 to remember the Exodus as well, 00:07:28.64\00:07:30.77 when water was turned into blood 00:07:30.80\00:07:32.24 and may be also the stories of Elisha 00:07:32.27\00:07:34.49 and Elijah are all bought in behind here. 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.84 So how would this work? 00:07:37.87\00:07:40.73 In the story here you have the water of purification, 00:07:40.76\00:07:45.93 the Jewish waters of purification. 00:07:45.96\00:07:47.63 They washed their hands over everything. 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.64 They are very concerned about ritual religion. 00:07:49.67\00:07:52.64 And ritual religion can point this to something greater, 00:07:52.67\00:07:56.10 but it often becomes just a ritual. 00:07:56.13\00:07:58.61 And so the author here is saying behind the rituals, 00:07:58.64\00:08:02.00 there's got to be something greater 00:08:02.03\00:08:03.62 and Jesus is that greater thing. 00:08:03.65\00:08:06.48 Jesus is the wine. 00:08:06.51\00:08:09.39 And what does the wine or grape juice 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.79 of the Lord supper represent? Jesus' blood. 00:08:11.82\00:08:16.04 So you have a number of hints here also of the crucifixion. 00:08:16.07\00:08:20.76 Mention of the third day. 00:08:20.79\00:08:23.36 Turning the water into wine which represents His blood. 00:08:23.39\00:08:28.06 In verse 4 it talks about "My time has not yet come." 00:08:28.09\00:08:33.73 The Greek word there is the hour. 00:08:33.76\00:08:36.72 Jesus repeatedly says in the Gospel of John 00:08:36.75\00:08:40.65 "My hour has not yet come. My hour has not yet come." 00:08:40.68\00:08:44.21 And then in Chapter 12 he says 00:08:44.24\00:08:45.61 the hour has come when the Son of Man must give up His life. 00:08:45.64\00:08:50.64 So the hour of Jesus is the time of the cross. 00:08:50.67\00:08:54.88 In verse 11 it also says, "He revealed His glory." 00:08:54.91\00:08:59.56 And the Gospel of John "Glory" 00:08:59.59\00:09:02.20 is always a reference to the cross. 00:09:02.23\00:09:04.56 You see, what's happening here. 00:09:04.59\00:09:05.97 These are seeds being implanted that sprout later in the gospel, 00:09:06.00\00:09:09.78 a deep spiritual meaning. 00:09:09.81\00:09:12.13 One more, Mary appears only twice in this gospel. 00:09:12.16\00:09:16.84 In the wedding of Cana, and where else do you think? 00:09:16.87\00:09:20.71 At the cross. At the cross. 00:09:20.74\00:09:22.98 John has to place where Mary comes 00:09:23.01\00:09:26.05 with the beloved disciple and Jesus says 00:09:26.08\00:09:29.07 "Woman behold your son, son behold your mother." 00:09:29.10\00:09:32.01 Jesus hands his mother 00:09:32.04\00:09:33.41 over to the keeping of John after His death. 00:09:33.44\00:09:37.07 So Mary appears only twice in the wedding here 00:09:37.10\00:09:40.01 and at the cross. 00:09:40.04\00:09:41.52 So you have what I called cross connections 00:09:41.55\00:09:44.97 that point to a deeper meaning of the story 00:09:45.00\00:09:47.71 and I said we could spend hours. 00:09:47.74\00:09:49.53 Well, I'm sure we could. 00:09:49.56\00:09:50.93 Now this is very deep theological 00:09:50.96\00:09:52.80 study that you've done here. 00:09:52.83\00:09:54.74 And maybe for a lay person who is just reading the Bible 00:09:54.77\00:09:59.51 and perhaps he's not have the time or the tools 00:09:59.54\00:10:03.48 as a scholar to go through all of these, 00:10:03.51\00:10:05.49 you know, these studies. 00:10:05.52\00:10:07.59 Let me ask you a question. 00:10:07.62\00:10:08.99 How should one, you know, 00:10:09.02\00:10:11.05 when reading a passage like this one, 00:10:11.08\00:10:13.84 read the passage and apply to his or her personal life? 00:10:13.87\00:10:19.66 Yes. Well, I think the personal application is definitely this. 00:10:19.69\00:10:24.42 These stories of Jesus can remain in the distance, 00:10:24.45\00:10:28.09 they are out there, okay. 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.35 And we can read them and go on with our lives, 00:10:30.38\00:10:33.47 but to ask ourselves the question. 00:10:33.50\00:10:37.07 What difference does Jesus makes? 00:10:37.10\00:10:40.08 Why do I need to receive Jesus 00:10:40.11\00:10:43.18 for something special to happen in my life? 00:10:43.21\00:10:46.39 Who really cares? 00:10:46.42\00:10:48.11 And one answer to that question which is also related 00:10:48.14\00:10:52.50 to this whole idea of second Adam and humanity and so on. 00:10:52.53\00:10:55.84 How do human beings discover value? 00:10:55.87\00:10:59.80 We go about in a number of different ways. 00:10:59.83\00:11:02.30 We try to accumulate things. 00:11:02.33\00:11:04.45 I'm a valuable person if I dress real cool 00:11:04.48\00:11:06.86 or if I've really great cars or fantastic house 00:11:06.89\00:11:09.50 or big money in the back account. 00:11:09.53\00:11:12.44 The trouble is if you try to find value 00:11:12.47\00:11:14.85 and that way you can lose it all. 00:11:14.88\00:11:16.25 The stock market can crash. 00:11:16.28\00:11:17.83 Your house can burn down. 00:11:17.86\00:11:19.23 The car can crash. 00:11:19.26\00:11:20.75 To trust in money and in things for sense of value 00:11:20.78\00:11:25.24 just doesn't cut it. 00:11:25.27\00:11:26.68 A second way we look for value is an achievement. 00:11:26.71\00:11:29.07 I'm gonna get a Ph.D then I'll be somebody. 00:11:29.10\00:11:31.12 I'm gonna be the President of United States, 00:11:31.15\00:11:32.82 then I'll be somebody. 00:11:32.85\00:11:34.22 I'll be a great quarterback 00:11:34.25\00:11:35.62 and then I'll be somebody, you see. 00:11:35.65\00:11:38.70 But when you look for achievements 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.05 well, teachers get senile, athletes get old and decrepit, 00:11:41.08\00:11:46.47 presidents have to retire, you see. 00:11:46.50\00:11:49.40 And so that doesn't last either. 00:11:49.43\00:11:51.93 And then we look for value in others. 00:11:51.96\00:11:55.76 The only way to truly get value is to have a friend 00:11:55.79\00:12:00.47 who knows all about you, 00:12:00.50\00:12:02.43 who loves you just the way you are, 00:12:02.46\00:12:05.21 who lives forever and has genuine value 00:12:05.24\00:12:08.43 and there's only one person that's Jesus. 00:12:08.46\00:12:11.63 There's no other source of meaning and value in life 00:12:11.66\00:12:15.13 that's truly permanent than Jesus Christ 00:12:15.16\00:12:18.18 and that is why Jesus has lasted 2000 years. 00:12:18.21\00:12:22.63 That's why there's still millions and millions of people 00:12:22.66\00:12:24.99 that trust in Him, 00:12:25.02\00:12:26.70 because there's really no other path to life, 00:12:26.73\00:12:28.81 all other paths are temporary 00:12:28.84\00:12:30.92 and that I think is at the core of what the gospel is all about. 00:12:30.95\00:12:34.62 And at the core of what John is pointing us 00:12:34.65\00:12:36.64 Jesus is what truly matters. 00:12:36.67\00:12:40.17 Everything else is just subtext. 00:12:40.20\00:12:42.46 You are at this wedding 00:12:42.49\00:12:43.86 but it end up being all about Jesus 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.60 about His death, about Him as the second Adam 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.61 and all the rest of that Messiah. 00:12:48.64\00:12:50.92 And again it was important 00:12:50.95\00:12:52.84 for this couple to invite Jesus to their wedding. 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.37 And I hope friends that you invite Jesus 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.12 not necessary to your wedding only, 00:12:58.15\00:12:59.84 but in every area of your life to next time. 00:12:59.87\00:13:03.29
