Hello, well, I'm so happy you're able to join us 00:00:20.91\00:00:22.83 in this Bible study. 00:00:22.86\00:00:24.23 We're actually studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:24.26\00:00:27.37 And we're with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:27.40\00:00:29.57 And I'm very happy and excited 00:00:29.60\00:00:30.97 because he has this unique ability 00:00:31.00\00:00:35.67 to make Bible study very interesting 00:00:35.70\00:00:38.03 and we're going to find out in a few minutes. 00:00:38.06\00:00:41.18 Dr. Paulien, welcome again. 00:00:41.21\00:00:43.22 Thank you, it's good to be with you always, Deyvy. 00:00:43.25\00:00:45.29 Okay, you know, today we're gonna be 00:00:45.32\00:00:46.74 talking about the wedding in Cana. 00:00:46.77\00:00:50.36 And by the way if you have a Bible 00:00:50.39\00:00:52.00 you can turn to John 2 00:00:52.03\00:00:54.88 and we're gonna be studying verses 1-11. 00:00:54.91\00:00:58.85 Now Dr. Paulien, I'm very excited about this 00:00:58.88\00:01:01.18 because again we're talking about a wedding 00:01:01.21\00:01:04.15 and I say this because I look in this topic, 00:01:04.18\00:01:08.11 I look towards the future, you know, for me personally 00:01:08.14\00:01:11.62 whereas I don't know how excited that is to you, 00:01:11.65\00:01:13.45 may be you still, you look towards the past, 00:01:13.48\00:01:15.26 may be you look-- 00:01:15.29\00:01:16.66 This is the future thing, does that mean, 00:01:16.69\00:01:19.00 I don't--we were still meeting each other. 00:01:19.03\00:01:21.22 Are you married? 00:01:21.25\00:01:22.74 I'm-- at this point, no. 00:01:22.77\00:01:24.71 No. No. 00:01:24.74\00:01:26.23 So may be that's why I'm excited about this thing. Okay. 00:01:26.26\00:01:29.29 You know, I was just talking to a young lady 00:01:29.32\00:01:30.98 the other day and she was saying, 00:01:31.01\00:01:33.14 "All the good ones are taken." 00:01:33.17\00:01:35.90 Now I know, she's wrong. 00:01:35.93\00:01:37.63 Well, thank you, I appreciate it. 00:01:37.66\00:01:40.39 All right. 00:01:40.42\00:01:41.79 So for you, you're looking forward 00:01:41.82\00:01:43.31 to this idea of a wedding and what it means? 00:01:43.34\00:01:46.55 I, I am, you know, I am. 00:01:46.58\00:01:48.71 And I think that as I read this passage 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.66 because I read it earlier. 00:01:51.69\00:01:54.48 I found out something very interesting 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.49 that this couple whoever it was, 00:01:56.52\00:02:00.83 they decided to invite Jesus to their wedding. 00:02:00.86\00:02:04.92 And I thought that was very interesting because-- 00:02:04.95\00:02:08.00 if there is a Christian person out there who declines 00:02:08.03\00:02:13.11 to invite Jesus to his or her wedding 00:02:13.14\00:02:18.47 or just does not have that good feeling 00:02:18.50\00:02:23.56 for Jesus to be present there, 00:02:23.59\00:02:25.05 then I think there's something wrong with that decision, 00:02:25.08\00:02:28.11 because it's gonna be a lifetime commitment without Jesus. 00:02:28.14\00:02:31.84 I can just imagine how that marriage 00:02:31.87\00:02:34.82 can turn out eventually. But-- 00:02:34.85\00:02:37.39 So you're planning to invite Jesus to your wedding. 00:02:37.42\00:02:39.79 I do plan, because I think He was or He will be the one 00:02:39.82\00:02:45.42 who will bring us together and so I think it's good to, 00:02:45.45\00:02:49.69 He should be the first one to be invited. 00:02:49.72\00:02:52.49 And there's young lady somewhere, 00:02:52.52\00:02:54.42 maybe even watching this program 00:02:54.45\00:02:56.53 who loves Jesus as much you do 00:02:56.56\00:02:59.03 and could potentially be part of that. 00:02:59.06\00:03:01.02 Well, I don't know that's prophecy-- 00:03:01.05\00:03:03.04 I don't want to put you on the spot, 00:03:03.07\00:03:04.44 but here you are so. 00:03:04.47\00:03:05.84 You already put me on the spot. Okay. 00:03:05.87\00:03:08.40 So-- You're embarrassed, well. 00:03:08.43\00:03:11.87 All right then, let's continue. Okay. 00:03:11.90\00:03:13.83 So we have read that Jesus was calling His disciples 00:03:13.86\00:03:20.31 and by the time that Jesus and His disciples, 00:03:20.34\00:03:23.69 we'll read that they were invited to the wedding. 00:03:23.72\00:03:27.41 We find out that not all, 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.01 at least the Bible does not say that all 12 were invited, 00:03:29.04\00:03:31.99 but at least the first five who were called 00:03:32.02\00:03:34.11 and help me out here I think, it was Andrew, John, 00:03:34.14\00:03:37.84 it was Peter and Philip and then Daniel. 00:03:37.87\00:03:41.96 So at least we know that five were present at the wedding. 00:03:41.99\00:03:45.47 So I would like to know is, 00:03:45.50\00:03:48.47 why would Jesus begin or begin His ministries, 00:03:48.50\00:03:53.90 is that correct or at least start performing His signs 00:03:53.93\00:03:58.71 at a wedding and what's the point of this story, 00:03:58.74\00:04:02.35 because you said earlier that the Gospel of John 00:04:02.38\00:04:06.60 is a spiritual gospel and so what's the spiritual, 00:04:06.63\00:04:12.94 how can I say, what's the parable of this story 00:04:12.97\00:04:17.66 if you will, what's the meaning of it? 00:04:17.69\00:04:20.00 Well, that's I think what we want to do 00:04:20.03\00:04:22.20 in this program definitely, 00:04:22.23\00:04:24.00 because the synoptic gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke, 00:04:24.03\00:04:28.51 often tell the story to tell the story and it happened, 00:04:28.54\00:04:32.40 so here's the story and the key might be a saying of Jesus 00:04:32.43\00:04:36.65 who comes at the end of the story 00:04:36.68\00:04:38.07 or it might be a point, 00:04:38.10\00:04:39.88 that that story leads to the next story 00:04:39.91\00:04:41.97 and it's following a progression. 00:04:42.00\00:04:44.25 In the Gospel of John as we saw at the beginning 00:04:44.28\00:04:47.24 of this series, it's very selective. 00:04:47.27\00:04:51.63 He says there's all kinds of stuff Jesus did, 00:04:51.66\00:04:53.57 all kinds of miracles He did. 00:04:53.60\00:04:55.38 Why does He pick this wedding? 00:04:55.41\00:04:58.03 It's not casual. 00:04:58.06\00:05:00.11 And there is a depth here and in fact 00:05:00.14\00:05:02.04 I've taught as much as nine hours on this passage. 00:05:02.07\00:05:06.42 So there is a depth here, spiritual depths 00:05:06.45\00:05:09.05 that you wouldn't find in Matthew, Mark and Luke. 00:05:09.08\00:05:12.19 So we definitely want to get into that. 00:05:12.22\00:05:14.27 And you mentioned five disciples. 00:05:14.30\00:05:16.93 Another difference among the gospels 00:05:16.96\00:05:18.89 is Jesus doesn't emphasize the 12. 00:05:18.92\00:05:21.93 From Matthew, Mark and Luke it's important that he chose 12. 00:05:21.96\00:05:26.60 But he mentions five disciples in Chapter 1 00:05:26.63\00:05:29.20 and then in 21 when He names again there are seven. 00:05:29.23\00:05:32.08 I mean, John doesn't emphasize. 00:05:32.11\00:05:33.83 Yeah, in the Gospel of John 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.23 the tweleveness of the disciples isn't emphasized. 00:05:35.26\00:05:38.73 And so that would raised a question 00:05:38.76\00:05:41.12 when you're looking at Matthew, Mark and Luke, 00:05:41.15\00:05:43.19 why is the 12 so important 00:05:43.22\00:05:45.82 and we might get to that little later if we have time. Okay. 00:05:45.85\00:05:49.55 Let's take a look at the passage itself. 00:05:49.58\00:05:51.49 Why don't you start reading it for us, pastor? 00:05:51.52\00:05:54.04 And maybe I'll break in ever so often 00:05:54.07\00:05:57.44 at points some things out. Sure. 00:05:57.47\00:05:58.85 "On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee." 00:05:58.88\00:06:02.02 Okay, just stop there for a second. 00:06:02.05\00:06:04.28 It's on the third day. Yes. 00:06:04.31\00:06:07.36 Now remember John is the one who's constantly 00:06:07.39\00:06:10.34 marking off days and periods of time. 00:06:10.37\00:06:13.69 Let's just file that away. 00:06:13.72\00:06:15.09 That just may not be as unimportant does it seems. 00:06:15.12\00:06:18.22 We'll come back to it. Yeah. 00:06:18.25\00:06:20.58 "And the mother of Jesus was there," 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.74 so not only the disciples and Jesus 00:06:22.77\00:06:24.90 but the mother of Jesus. 00:06:24.93\00:06:27.05 "Now both Jesus and His disciples 00:06:27.08\00:06:28.71 were invited to the wedding. 00:06:28.74\00:06:30.27 And when they ran out of wine, 00:06:30.30\00:06:31.72 the mother of Jesus said to Him, 'They have no wine.'" 00:06:31.75\00:06:35.03 Well, see there it's important. 00:06:35.06\00:06:37.01 Mother is there, why is she there and Jesus, both? 00:06:37.04\00:06:41.70 Part of it is that Cana and Nazareth 00:06:41.73\00:06:43.80 were almost like twin cities. 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.15 So apparently people between with these towns 00:06:46.18\00:06:48.77 knew each other quite a bit, 00:06:48.80\00:06:50.61 so that's one piece of the background. 00:06:50.64\00:06:53.09 Why does she care if the wine runs out? 00:06:53.12\00:06:56.42 So these are questions that come up 00:06:56.45\00:06:59.05 and I think they're intentional. 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.19 I think they're placed in the story, 00:07:01.22\00:07:03.35 and the story is told in a way to evoke reader's questions. 00:07:03.38\00:07:07.78 So that's how we're gonna do together. 00:07:07.81\00:07:09.47 Go ahead. Keep reading. 00:07:09.50\00:07:11.53 Jesus said to her, Woman, 00:07:11.56\00:07:12.99 what does your concern have to do with Me? 00:07:13.02\00:07:15.87 My hour has not yet come.'' 00:07:15.90\00:07:18.23 His mother said to the servants, 00:07:18.26\00:07:19.93 "Whatever He says to you, do it." 00:07:19.96\00:07:23.05 Now there were set there three waterpots of stone, 00:07:23.08\00:07:28.43 according to the manner of purification of the Jews, 00:07:28.46\00:07:31.16 containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece." 00:07:31.19\00:07:34.58 Okay, let's stop there a minute. 00:07:34.61\00:07:37.71 Would you want to carry one of these pots? 00:07:37.74\00:07:40.22 It depends how heavy it is. 00:07:40.25\00:07:42.38 How heavy it is-- Okay. 00:07:42.41\00:07:43.78 Well, twenty or thirty gallons. How much is a gallon? 00:07:43.81\00:07:48.66 I would say, five, six pounds. 00:07:48.69\00:07:52.12 Okay, that's close I think 00:07:52.15\00:07:53.69 it's eighth and a quarter something like that. Okay. 00:07:53.72\00:07:56.56 So if you have twenty or thirty gallons in one pot 00:07:56.59\00:08:01.26 that pot is gonna weigh about 200 pounds 00:08:01.29\00:08:03.56 with the water in it, not counting the stone. 00:08:03.59\00:08:06.44 These are stone jars, 00:08:06.47\00:08:08.17 200 pounds of water in a stone jar, 00:08:08.20\00:08:11.37 I don't think even Mr. Universe 00:08:11.40\00:08:12.83 is gonna carry these very far, you see. 00:08:12.86\00:08:15.36 So these were not carrying pots, 00:08:15.39\00:08:18.10 these were cisterns at a place 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.26 may be where you don't have caves underground. 00:08:20.29\00:08:24.01 You can use pots like this, there is series of pots 00:08:24.04\00:08:26.24 to collect rain water from the roof 00:08:26.27\00:08:28.68 and the purpose of all this water 00:08:28.71\00:08:31.85 was for Jewish ceremonies of purification. 00:08:31.88\00:08:35.33 So John is sort of making the point here, 00:08:35.36\00:08:39.30 you know the Jewish were really concerned 00:08:39.33\00:08:40.96 about purification at that time, 00:08:40.99\00:08:42.57 so they had lots and lots of water for doing that. 00:08:42.60\00:08:45.36 And so rather than bringing the pots over to the person, 00:08:45.39\00:08:48.72 you would have to bring the person 00:08:48.75\00:08:50.12 over to the pots and get them-- 00:08:50.15\00:08:51.52 Not too practical to bring the pots over, 00:08:51.55\00:08:53.26 so when Jesus says fill the pots, 00:08:53.29\00:08:56.12 He's not having them come by Him 00:08:56.15\00:08:58.65 and you know, engaging each pot. 00:08:58.68\00:09:00.61 The pots are probably outside the house. 00:09:00.64\00:09:02.72 And He is telling them to go out there and do this task. 00:09:02.75\00:09:07.20 Okay. Verse 8 says, and He said to them. 00:09:07.23\00:09:11.69 "Draw some out now and take it to the master of the feast." 00:09:11.72\00:09:15.89 I should've skipped verse 7. Yeah, I was thinking that. 00:09:15.92\00:09:18.32 Jesus said to them, 00:09:18.35\00:09:19.72 "Fill the water pots with water." 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.43 And they filled them up to the brim. 00:09:21.46\00:09:23.65 And He said to them, "Draw some out now, 00:09:23.68\00:09:25.98 and take it to the master of the feast." 00:09:26.01\00:09:28.32 And they took it. 00:09:28.35\00:09:30.90 When the master of the feast had tasted 00:09:30.93\00:09:32.38 the water that was made wine, 00:09:32.41\00:09:34.26 and did not know where it came from, 00:09:34.29\00:09:35.84 but the servants who had drawn the water knew, 00:09:35.87\00:09:39.51 the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 00:09:39.54\00:09:42.12 And he said to him, 00:09:42.15\00:09:43.52 "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, 00:09:43.55\00:09:46.78 and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. 00:09:46.81\00:09:51.34 You have kept the good wine until now." 00:09:51.37\00:09:54.43 You should probably note a couple of things there. 00:09:54.46\00:09:56.59 First of all, Jesus doesn't touch the water. 00:09:56.62\00:10:01.01 Remember, we've talked about that in our earlier program 00:10:01.04\00:10:03.50 that in the Gospel of John 00:10:03.53\00:10:04.90 when He does this miracles he doesn't touch it. 00:10:04.93\00:10:06.50 The pots are outside. 00:10:06.53\00:10:08.44 He tells them go and fill those pots 00:10:08.47\00:10:11.20 and then draw out some and take it to the master of the feast. 00:10:11.23\00:10:15.10 Master of the feast would be like a caterer 00:10:15.13\00:10:17.52 or a wedding planner in today's context. 00:10:17.55\00:10:21.97 So we can ask the question, you know, what's going on here, 00:10:22.00\00:10:27.86 why is it so surprising to the master of the feast 00:10:27.89\00:10:31.20 that this water is pretty good. 00:10:31.23\00:10:35.94 And it tells us that he did not know 00:10:35.97\00:10:39.77 where the wine came from. 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.74 So these are all little details when you think of this-- 00:10:41.77\00:10:45.12 the story is a real story. 00:10:45.15\00:10:47.27 It really took place but for John, 00:10:47.30\00:10:50.27 he emphasizes things in the story 00:10:50.30\00:10:52.56 that serve his theological purpose 00:10:52.59\00:10:55.19 and that's what we want to get to before we're done. 00:10:55.22\00:10:58.31 Now you said in a different program 00:10:58.34\00:11:01.45 that the gospel again the Gospel of John is a spiritual one. 00:11:01.48\00:11:05.73 My question is "What is the purpose of Jesus 00:11:05.76\00:11:09.46 performing this miracle where the water is turned into wine 00:11:09.49\00:11:15.07 compared to other miracles where He heals someone 00:11:15.10\00:11:18.71 either physically, spiritually, emotionally, 00:11:18.74\00:11:21.42 there is some benefit to mankind?" Right. 00:11:21.45\00:11:23.75 Where in this case it almost seems like 00:11:23.78\00:11:27.09 He's performing a miracle for the sake of service, 00:11:27.12\00:11:31.54 for pleasing the guests in this case so. 00:11:31.57\00:11:35.38 I don't know if you-- what's the connection 00:11:35.41\00:11:36.78 then the spiritual of this miracle? 00:11:36.81\00:11:39.50 Well, you know, the other three don't mention 00:11:39.53\00:11:43.13 the story at all Matthew, Mark and Luke 00:11:43.16\00:11:45.08 don't mention the story of wedding at Cana 00:11:45.11\00:11:46.59 perhaps for that very reason, 00:11:46.62\00:11:48.74 that it doesn't have an obvious spiritual purpose, 00:11:48.77\00:11:52.82 but John is not afraid to put something in here 00:11:52.85\00:11:54.96 that doesn't have an obvious spiritual purpose, 00:11:54.99\00:11:57.13 because the whole story is going to have a spiritual purpose. 00:11:57.16\00:12:01.39 And in this particular story our number of details 00:12:01.42\00:12:07.19 that when you go to little bit deeper-- 00:12:07.22\00:12:08.59 let me just give you an example, turning water into wine. 00:12:08.62\00:12:13.32 Is there any Old Testament story, 00:12:13.35\00:12:16.77 that sounds little bit like that, 00:12:16.80\00:12:18.91 as a story of transforming water? 00:12:18.94\00:12:21.93 I can think of the time in Egypt the water turn into blood. 00:12:21.96\00:12:26.64 Yeah, yeah. Is that-- 00:12:26.67\00:12:28.04 Yeah. Okay. 00:12:28.07\00:12:29.44 Moses turns water into blood. Can you think of any other? 00:12:29.47\00:12:33.59 Mmm, you gonna have to help me over here. 00:12:33.62\00:12:36.83 Do you remember Elisha? Okay. 00:12:36.86\00:12:38.71 He comes to Jericho, and the water in Jericho 00:12:38.74\00:12:42.45 is messed up, its poisonous, 00:12:42.48\00:12:46.02 they can't drink it and it's really hurting the community, 00:12:46.05\00:12:48.50 because there's not a whole lot of options there. 00:12:48.53\00:12:51.72 And so He sprinkles some salt in the spring 00:12:51.75\00:12:55.15 and it turns to water sweet. 00:12:55.18\00:12:58.00 So it's a transformation miracle 00:12:58.03\00:12:59.80 again from salty water to sweet water, 00:12:59.83\00:13:02.76 you know Jericho's by the Dead Sea, 00:13:02.79\00:13:04.73 so there's lot of salty water around there 00:13:04.76\00:13:06.77 and to have sweet water coming out. 00:13:06.80\00:13:08.26 By the way I've drunk from that well in Jericho 00:13:08.29\00:13:10.69 and the water is very good. 00:13:10.72\00:13:12.94 It's still sweet? Yes, oh yeah, sweet. 00:13:12.97\00:13:14.80 I'm still here. 00:13:14.83\00:13:16.24 That was 20 years ago, so yeah, the poisonous water has gone. 00:13:16.27\00:13:20.18 So you have these two transformation miracles 00:13:20.21\00:13:23.00 and one part of the story, you see, when you go deeper 00:13:23.03\00:13:26.96 one part of this might be, perhaps it's hinting 00:13:26.99\00:13:30.13 that the Exodus story and the Elisha story 00:13:30.16\00:13:32.47 may somehow be important in the Gospel of John. 00:13:32.50\00:13:36.16 I give you another little key here. 00:13:36.19\00:13:39.14 Joshua and Elisha mean the same thing. 00:13:39.17\00:13:44.75 To us they're totally different name 00:13:44.78\00:13:46.27 but Joshua means, Yehovah is my savior, 00:13:46.30\00:13:49.32 and Jehovah is my savior. 00:13:49.35\00:13:51.42 Elisha means, God is my savior. 00:13:51.45\00:13:54.27 So they're cognate names. 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.22 They're two different names that mean the same thing. 00:13:56.25\00:13:59.11 So those two are tied together by their very names 00:13:59.14\00:14:02.79 in the Old Testament already. 00:14:02.82\00:14:04.58 So this story is told in a way 00:14:04.61\00:14:06.72 to bring those two stories to mind. 00:14:06.75\00:14:09.19 Okay. We're gonna continue then and pick up where we left up. 00:14:09.22\00:14:13.24 Friends stay with us after this break 00:14:13.27\00:14:15.21 we are studying the wedding at Cana. 00:14:15.24\00:14:18.51
