And welcome back. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Well, Dr. Jon Paulien, 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 we are studying that the John, the Baptist, 00:00:04.20\00:00:07.57 he is denying these questions. 00:00:07.60\00:00:09.74 He said, "No, I'm not Elijah. 00:00:09.77\00:00:11.14 No, I'm not the prophet. No, I'm not the Christ." 00:00:11.17\00:00:13.76 He is almost putting himself down. 00:00:13.79\00:00:16.15 Whereas in other gospels, he is this great prophet. 00:00:16.18\00:00:19.56 And even Jesus said he was a great prophet. 00:00:19.59\00:00:21.75 Where he calls him Elijah? Right. 00:00:21.78\00:00:23.67 Here John denies he is Elijah 00:00:23.70\00:00:26.50 even when Jesus had called him. 00:00:26.53\00:00:28.02 And so why does John do that? 00:00:28.05\00:00:30.55 Why does he deny? 00:00:30.58\00:00:31.95 Why can't he just clearly go direct 00:00:31.98\00:00:34.50 to the answer who he is? 00:00:34.53\00:00:36.89 Well, the impression you gave 00:00:36.92\00:00:38.74 when you study carefully the history in the background 00:00:38.77\00:00:41.49 is that the Baptist movement didn't die when Jesus came. 00:00:41.52\00:00:45.84 Apparently, a lot of people didn't get the message that-- 00:00:45.87\00:00:48.93 And by Baptist movement, you mean they were followers? 00:00:48.96\00:00:51.18 People who followed him. 00:00:51.21\00:00:52.58 I mean, you see even in these stories 00:00:52.61\00:00:54.21 as crowds of people coming to him. 00:00:54.24\00:00:56.19 You know, to hear his preaching. 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.84 In all the gospels, you have-- 00:00:57.87\00:00:59.46 that's one of the things all four gospels has in common. 00:00:59.49\00:01:01.92 John's out in the desert. He is preaching. 00:01:01.95\00:01:04.53 Crowds of people are coming to him. 00:01:04.56\00:01:06.15 He is a sensation. 00:01:06.18\00:01:07.55 He is a rock star, you know, in their kind of world. 00:01:07.58\00:01:11.32 So John is this great figure 00:01:11.35\00:01:14.24 and he becomes great in order to point out the Messiah 00:01:14.27\00:01:17.66 when he comes 'cause the Messiah will not be 00:01:17.69\00:01:20.20 as obviously great as John when he first appears. 00:01:20.23\00:01:24.13 So he is there 00:01:24.16\00:01:25.53 to get the people's attention and then point him out. 00:01:25.56\00:01:28.41 But here in the Gospel of John happens what didn't happened. 00:01:28.44\00:01:34.17 Apparently, in the years between Matthew, Mark, and Luke, 00:01:34.20\00:01:38.05 which were probably written in '50s, '60s something like that, 00:01:38.08\00:01:41.61 now we are about 30-40 years later. 00:01:41.64\00:01:43.99 In the intervening time, something has happened. 00:01:44.02\00:01:47.81 Apparently, the Baptist movement didn't end when Jesus came. 00:01:47.84\00:01:54.19 For example, in the Book of Acts, 00:01:54.22\00:01:55.98 you have Apollos who was a follower, 00:01:56.01\00:01:59.66 who'd never even heard about the spirit, 00:01:59.69\00:02:01.62 he was a follower of the Baptist. 00:02:01.65\00:02:03.57 He missed a lot of the memos about Jesus. 00:02:03.60\00:02:06.92 Then you have also in the gospel-- 00:02:06.95\00:02:08.85 in the Book of Acts, 00:02:08.88\00:02:10.90 there are stories about some people 00:02:10.93\00:02:13.34 who are following the Baptist. 00:02:13.37\00:02:15.01 They didn't baptized by John, 00:02:15.04\00:02:16.44 but they didn't know anything about Jesus. 00:02:16.47\00:02:18.83 So they evidently were continuing 00:02:18.86\00:02:21.84 the follower of the Baptists 00:02:21.87\00:02:23.24 until they ran into Paul and his companions. 00:02:23.27\00:02:26.87 And then there is a group of people 00:02:26.90\00:02:28.94 in ancient times called Mandaeans, 00:02:28.97\00:02:31.76 who continued to follow Baptist and they still exist today. 00:02:31.79\00:02:35.38 A many of them are in Iran. 00:02:35.41\00:02:38.50 You know, modern day Persia. 00:02:38.53\00:02:41.55 And they still continue 00:02:41.58\00:02:43.90 to worship the Baptist as the chief guy. 00:02:43.93\00:02:47.31 So, when you realize the Baptist movement continued 00:02:47.34\00:02:51.86 suddenly some of this makes sense. 00:02:51.89\00:02:54.20 Even what the Baptists says in this gospel made sense. 00:02:54.23\00:03:00.29 And it would seem reasonable 00:03:00.32\00:03:03.44 that this Baptist movement actually got kind of radical 00:03:03.47\00:03:06.55 because John lost his head for political reasons. 00:03:06.58\00:03:10.48 Do you remember the story? 00:03:10.51\00:03:12.56 He was saying stuff about the king and his wife. 00:03:12.59\00:03:15.62 Now that will get you in trouble, you see. 00:03:15.65\00:03:18.14 So he was taking a strong political kind of role, 00:03:18.17\00:03:23.18 and so it's possible that the followers of the Baptist 00:03:23.21\00:03:26.77 might have even gotten a bit challenging. 00:03:26.80\00:03:30.17 And the John, the Baptist was careful 00:03:30.20\00:03:31.90 not to draw people to himself. 00:03:31.93\00:03:34.58 That's what the Gospel of John is telling us. Right. 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.36 But evidently, there were some people 00:03:37.39\00:03:39.09 who after John, the Baptist was gone 00:03:39.12\00:03:41.29 were seeing him as a Messiah, seeing him as the light, 00:03:41.32\00:03:46.07 seeing him as Elijah, etcetera. 00:03:46.10\00:03:49.28 And the Gospel of John is correcting this 00:03:49.31\00:03:52.25 by bringing data to fore 00:03:52.28\00:03:54.44 that they'd overlooked about the Baptist. 00:03:54.47\00:03:57.89 And you asked the question, 00:03:57.92\00:04:00.10 who in his right mind would see the John as any rival to Jesus, 00:04:00.13\00:04:05.63 was a couple of things you need to know. 00:04:05.66\00:04:07.53 First of all, the Jews of that time 00:04:07.56\00:04:10.34 were expecting more than one Messiah. 00:04:10.37\00:04:13.27 When you go to the writings 00:04:13.30\00:04:14.98 between the old and New Testament, 00:04:15.01\00:04:16.81 you discover that they actually had two Messiahs. 00:04:16.84\00:04:20.20 One would be from the tribe of Judah 00:04:20.23\00:04:22.49 and the other from the tribe of Levi. 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.28 And so when you have the idea of two Messiahs, 00:04:25.31\00:04:28.26 where Jesus is from the tribe of Judah, 00:04:28.29\00:04:30.37 John is a priest, so he is from the tribe of Levi. 00:04:30.40\00:04:34.05 So that fits perfectly with the expectation 00:04:34.08\00:04:37.98 that they had at that time. 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.70 In the Old Testament, you had the king and the high priest. 00:04:40.73\00:04:45.07 You had Zerubbabel and Joshua. 00:04:45.10\00:04:49.03 You had the priestly Messiah 00:04:49.06\00:04:52.30 and the kingly Messiah at Qumran, 00:04:52.33\00:04:54.47 you know, where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. 00:04:54.50\00:04:56.37 You have this kind of a concept. 00:04:56.40\00:04:58.29 So the idea was the two Messiah. 00:04:58.32\00:05:01.43 So the question is which of these is greater? 00:05:01.46\00:05:04.83 And in Judaism, there is another concept that comes here 00:05:04.86\00:05:07.58 and that is that earlier is better. 00:05:07.61\00:05:10.58 Earlier is better. 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.67 If you come later, you're not as good as what came earlier. 00:05:12.70\00:05:16.16 I think of Jesus, when he says, 00:05:16.19\00:05:18.10 you know, they said Moses allowed us to divorce our wives 00:05:18.13\00:05:20.88 and Jesus says, "I know He did." 00:05:20.91\00:05:22.35 But in the beginning it wasn't so. 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.61 Jesus is appealing back earlier as authority for them. 00:05:24.64\00:05:28.47 He is accepting there the kind of concept that they had. 00:05:28.50\00:05:32.55 So to convince them that really he shouldn't divorce. 00:05:32.58\00:05:36.35 When it comes to Sabbath, you know, people say, 00:05:36.38\00:05:39.47 "Well, the Sabbath is something at the Jews did." 00:05:39.50\00:05:42.76 And Jesus said, "No, wait a minute. 00:05:42.79\00:05:44.16 In the beginning, man was made not for the Sabbath, 00:05:44.19\00:05:48.35 the Sabbath was not made from-- that was ago. 00:05:48.38\00:05:51.55 Sabbath was made for man 00:05:51.58\00:05:52.95 not man for the Sabbath, you see." 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.87 And that man is speaking of Adam. 00:05:54.90\00:05:57.21 So you see Jesus had a tenancy to go back earlier 00:05:57.24\00:06:00.67 to establish the thing and say, 00:06:00.70\00:06:03.26 if you want to reform something, 00:06:03.29\00:06:04.66 you go back to an earlier period when it was good. 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.91 So it makes sense what the Jews were saying. 00:06:06.94\00:06:10.59 The high priest was there for 400 years 00:06:10.62\00:06:13.66 before there was a king. 00:06:13.69\00:06:15.40 The high priest anoints the king and puts the crown on his head. 00:06:15.43\00:06:19.40 So they were thinking that if John came first 00:06:19.43\00:06:23.51 and he was from the Levi, he was greater than Jesus. 00:06:23.54\00:06:26.94 And so, what does the text here tell us? 00:06:26.97\00:06:30.01 How does it respond? 00:06:30.04\00:06:32.46 And for the gospel writers, Jesus is both priest and king. 00:06:32.49\00:06:36.79 He is the sacrificial lamb, 00:06:36.82\00:06:38.96 He is that the priest of ancient Israel, 00:06:38.99\00:06:42.24 and He is also the king 00:06:42.27\00:06:45.24 and the model for Jesus was guy name Melchizedek. 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.39 You remember Melchizedek in the Book of Hebrews? 00:06:48.42\00:06:50.57 He is both king and priest. 00:06:50.60\00:06:52.12 And he is before Aaron. 00:06:52.15\00:06:54.80 So he trumps the priestly line. 00:06:54.83\00:06:56.86 He is the king and priest that came before Aaron and David. 00:06:56.89\00:07:00.70 So the New Testament writers are arguing 00:07:00.73\00:07:04.55 with some of these concepts, these reveals to Jesus. 00:07:04.58\00:07:08.92 And what is John's answer in the prologue? 00:07:08.95\00:07:12.40 How does he answer? 00:07:12.43\00:07:13.80 Who came first? Jesus. 00:07:13.83\00:07:17.56 How would you know that he came first? 00:07:17.59\00:07:19.81 'Cause He was in the beginning from eternity was God. 00:07:19.84\00:07:24.58 So the prologue sets the table for these statements. 00:07:24.61\00:07:28.27 When John says, "He is greater than me 00:07:28.30\00:07:30.85 because he came he was before me." 00:07:30.88\00:07:34.11 That made no sense to the people here in John talk. 00:07:34.14\00:07:36.94 Obviously, 'cause some of them didn't even follow it, you know. 00:07:36.97\00:07:40.66 But the reader of the gospel with the prologue and my-- 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.60 now he understands, "Oh, Jesus was earlier. 00:07:44.63\00:07:48.43 He was greater than the Baptist." 00:07:48.46\00:07:51.81 So the Gospel of John is trying to restore the Baptist 00:07:51.84\00:07:55.80 to the place that God actually intended for Him to be, 00:07:55.83\00:08:00.48 and this chapter 1, 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.90 you won't find it in Matthew, Mark, or Luke, 00:08:02.93\00:08:04.84 but it's building on the story that's going on 00:08:04.87\00:08:08.83 behind the scenes in that first century. 00:08:08.86\00:08:12.40 And then He says He makes that answer now. 00:08:12.43\00:08:16.65 He says, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness." 00:08:16.68\00:08:20.38 So He then--after He denies three times then he says, 00:08:20.41\00:08:24.66 "Okay, that's not who I am, but let me tell you who I am. 00:08:24.69\00:08:27.74 I am that voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:08:27.77\00:08:30.79 make straight the way of the Lord." 00:08:30.82\00:08:33.95 So his only mission is to point out Jesus. 00:08:33.98\00:08:38.07 He is not be a rock star, that's what happened. 00:08:38.10\00:08:41.88 But John, he was deferring all of that praise 00:08:41.91\00:08:44.93 and all the glory, so he can point that Jesus. 00:08:44.96\00:08:47.36 Why don't you read verses 29-34 because it is there 00:08:47.39\00:08:52.15 that John actually carries out His mission? 00:08:52.18\00:08:55.54 "The next day John saw Jesus coming told him he said, 00:08:55.57\00:08:58.83 'Behold the Lamb of God, 00:08:58.86\00:09:00.72 who takes away the sin of the world 00:09:00.75\00:09:03.12 this is he of whom I said, 00:09:03.15\00:09:05.15 after me comes a man who is preferred before me, 00:09:05.18\00:09:08.91 for he was before me. 00:09:08.94\00:09:11.08 I did not know him but that he should be revealed to Israel, 00:09:11.11\00:09:14.85 therefore I came baptizing with water. 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.97 And John witness saying, 00:09:18.00\00:09:20.36 I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.69 and he remained upon him. 00:09:23.72\00:09:26.04 I did not know him, 00:09:26.07\00:09:27.44 but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me, 00:09:27.47\00:09:30.76 upon whom you see the Spirit descending, 00:09:30.79\00:09:33.06 and remaining on him, 00:09:33.09\00:09:34.46 this is he who baptizes with the Holy Sprit. 00:09:34.49\00:09:38.62 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God." 00:09:38.65\00:09:44.14 So here he accomplishes his mission 00:09:44.17\00:09:46.26 that is what he came for when Jesus comes to be baptized. 00:09:46.29\00:09:50.57 It even says John didn't know him. 00:09:50.60\00:09:53.61 They apparently were somewhat related, 00:09:53.64\00:09:56.02 but it maybe that they were separated, 00:09:56.05\00:09:58.68 you know, from a very early time and so the adult Jesus, 00:09:58.71\00:10:01.50 the adult John did not know each other. 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.74 John would not have recognized Jesus 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.03 if he saw him on the street, 00:10:06.06\00:10:07.78 but the Holy Spirit said to him, "This is the one. 00:10:07.81\00:10:11.61 This is the one that you where to point out." 00:10:11.64\00:10:13.39 And so John points to Jesus. 00:10:13.42\00:10:16.54 He is setting the table for Jesus here. 00:10:16.57\00:10:20.10 And in the rest of this chapter that's what we see happening. 00:10:20.13\00:10:24.57 The disciples of John start coming to Jesus. 00:10:24.60\00:10:28.58 You're seeing the transition between the two. 00:10:28.61\00:10:32.49 So let's take a look at verses 36 and 37, 00:10:32.52\00:10:35.44 we can see that transition. 00:10:35.47\00:10:36.96 "And looking at Jesus as he walked, 00:10:36.99\00:10:39.25 he said, 'Behold the Lamb of God. 00:10:39.28\00:10:41.99 The two disciples heard him speak, 00:10:42.02\00:10:44.42 and they followed Jesus.'" 00:10:44.45\00:10:46.34 Now one could ask the question, which Lamb of God? 00:10:46.37\00:10:50.29 You know, is it the past over lamb? 00:10:50.32\00:10:52.07 Is it the sacrificial lamb? Is it the lamb of Isaiah 53? 00:10:52.10\00:10:56.39 You know, you have all these different options. 00:10:56.42\00:10:58.73 I think in John particularly is a passover lamb. 00:10:58.76\00:11:02.88 Because it mentions at the crucifixion 00:11:02.91\00:11:05.87 that no bone was broken because in the passover, 00:11:05.90\00:11:10.30 they came at passover time. 00:11:10.33\00:11:12.47 So that's more of a technical question, 00:11:12.50\00:11:14.80 but you'll notice that when John identifies Jesus 00:11:14.83\00:11:19.49 some of His disciples immediately follow 00:11:19.52\00:11:22.90 and they go on their way. 00:11:22.93\00:11:25.30 And then notice verse 46. 00:11:25.33\00:11:28.40 "And Nathanael said to him, 00:11:28.43\00:11:30.02 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.90 Philip said to him, 'Come and see.'" 00:11:32.93\00:11:35.79 So first of all, these two disciples John points to, 00:11:35.82\00:11:40.46 they find the couple of more, 00:11:40.49\00:11:42.02 Peter and Philip and then Philip finds Nathaniel, 00:11:42.05\00:11:46.10 and so the thing is kind of cascading 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.15 and they're coming to Jesus. 00:11:49.18\00:11:50.93 So it's drawing the transition 00:11:50.96\00:11:53.11 between the time of John and the time of Jesus. 00:11:53.14\00:11:57.48 Just a note on this, 00:11:57.51\00:11:58.88 can any good thing come out of the Nazareth? 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.31 You had three types of towns in Galilee. 00:12:01.34\00:12:04.75 There were strict Jewish towns. 00:12:04.78\00:12:07.96 There were loose Jewish towns 00:12:07.99\00:12:11.28 where they didn't follow laws all that great. 00:12:11.31\00:12:14.47 And then there were Gentile towns, 00:12:14.50\00:12:16.86 your Greek towns like, Sepphoris, so Tiberias. 00:12:16.89\00:12:22.50 So you have these three types of towns. 00:12:22.53\00:12:24.87 Cana and Nazareth were actually not far apart. 00:12:24.90\00:12:28.86 I could imagine that Cana was an observing town 00:12:28.89\00:12:32.15 and Nazareth seems to be loose area, 00:12:32.18\00:12:34.60 you know, not so serious about the Jewish faith. 00:12:34.63\00:12:37.72 I can imagine when Nathan was a little child, 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.07 you know, his father would say, 00:12:40.10\00:12:41.47 "Boy, I tell you, when Messiah comes, 00:12:41.50\00:12:43.87 he is definitely not gonna be coming from Nazareth." 00:12:43.90\00:12:47.11 They probably-- Anywhere but Nazareth. 00:12:47.14\00:12:48.51 Yeah, and exactly, 00:12:48.54\00:12:49.91 they're probably pretty frustrated with Nazareth. 00:12:49.94\00:12:52.45 So, you know, underlying here you see the skeptic Nathaniel 00:12:52.48\00:12:57.49 and yet he is really the faithful one, you know. 00:12:57.52\00:13:00.00 He is not easy to persuade, 00:13:00.03\00:13:01.97 but once he finds, Jesus is truly who He is. 00:13:02.00\00:13:06.03 He falls behind 100%. 00:13:06.06\00:13:09.07 Well, Dr. Paulien, we want to thank you 00:13:09.10\00:13:10.76 for being with us again and do some Bible study. 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.89 And thank you too friends for joining us. 00:13:13.92\00:13:16.21 I hope that you also make that decision 00:13:16.24\00:13:18.16 to follow Jesus Christ always. God bless. 00:13:18.19\00:13:21.16
