Hello, friends, and welcome to this program, 00:00:19.10\00:00:21.02 "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.05\00:00:22.62 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez, and I'm so pleased 00:00:22.65\00:00:24.88 that you are able to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:24.91\00:00:28.64 We're studying the Gospel of John 00:00:28.67\00:00:31.08 and with us is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:31.11\00:00:34.02 Dr. Paulien, welcome again. 00:00:34.05\00:00:36.32 And I have to tell you, I didn't write this book. Okay. 00:00:36.35\00:00:39.94 You looked like, you're a little uncertain there for me. 00:00:39.97\00:00:41.78 What do you gonna say? 00:00:41.81\00:00:43.31 By the way, your name spelled differently. 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.41 That's right. 00:00:45.44\00:00:46.81 J-O-N. It's J-O-N. 00:00:46.84\00:00:48.21 There is no H in there. What's up with that? 00:00:48.24\00:00:50.56 That's what my mother called me. Okay. 00:00:50.59\00:00:52.83 Actually, it goes back to Jonathan. 00:00:52.86\00:00:56.45 I think the whole thing of, 00:00:56.48\00:00:58.44 you know, David and Jonathan in the Bible intrigued them 00:00:58.47\00:01:01.90 and the name means, "Gift of God." 00:01:01.93\00:01:04.40 But as I became an adult and author I thought, 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.03 you know, I'm gonna have to sign my name 00:01:07.06\00:01:08.43 100,000 times in my life. 00:01:08.46\00:01:09.94 I'd like it to be a little shorter. 00:01:09.97\00:01:11.93 So oddly enough my wife and my daughter 00:01:11.96\00:01:15.43 they both insist on the long version of their names, 00:01:15.46\00:01:18.32 even though everyone calls them the short ones. 00:01:18.35\00:01:19.91 So we're all being difficult and-- 00:01:19.94\00:01:21.60 So you've save time even while signing your name? 00:01:21.63\00:01:24.93 Absolutely. 00:01:24.96\00:01:26.33 You know, make it nice and simple, J-O-N. 00:01:26.36\00:01:27.79 2.5 seconds, okay. 00:01:27.82\00:01:29.19 And it catches peoples' attention, too. 00:01:29.22\00:01:30.96 Yeah, that's good. You're unique. 00:01:30.99\00:01:34.20 We all are, you know. 00:01:34.23\00:01:36.19 Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? 00:01:36.22\00:01:39.26 Sounds interesting. 00:01:39.29\00:01:40.66 If that's true and sciences have are telling us, 00:01:40.69\00:01:43.39 that's why I believe them. 00:01:43.42\00:01:45.44 If that's true then 00:01:45.47\00:01:46.84 no two human beings are exactly are alike. 00:01:46.87\00:01:49.63 And that means you have a unique mission 00:01:49.66\00:01:52.02 and something unique to do for God. 00:01:52.05\00:01:54.01 Amen. That sounds very encouraging. 00:01:54.04\00:01:57.21 I've never seen another person 00:01:57.24\00:01:58.61 that looks like me in this world. 00:01:58.64\00:02:00.01 That is true. 00:02:00.04\00:02:01.51 And then sometimes we say, it's a good thing, 00:02:01.54\00:02:03.52 but in your case, it will be all right to have a twin. 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.69 I don't know about that. 00:02:05.72\00:02:08.06 So today we're continuing now talking on the Gospel of John 1. 00:02:08.09\00:02:11.82 Where are we picking up today? 00:02:11.85\00:02:13.32 Okay, well at the first three programs 00:02:13.35\00:02:15.43 we were looking at the Gospel of John 00:02:15.46\00:02:16.83 as a whole and noticing a lot of its uniqueness, 00:02:16.86\00:02:20.75 but now we're coming into the first chapter 00:02:20.78\00:02:24.06 and that's what called a prologue here. 00:02:24.09\00:02:27.81 The first 18 verses of the Gospel of John 00:02:27.84\00:02:31.50 standout separately. 00:02:31.53\00:02:33.93 They're unique from the rest of the gospel. 00:02:33.96\00:02:35.76 And you might say, "Well, how come verse 19 00:02:35.79\00:02:37.86 isn't chapter 2?" 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.14 Well, it's because the chapters were not decided by John, 00:02:40.17\00:02:43.37 nor by us. 00:02:43.40\00:02:45.17 They kind of happened in the middle ages 00:02:45.20\00:02:47.50 and they were put in there just for convenience. 00:02:47.53\00:02:50.56 But the reality is the first 18 verses 00:02:50.59\00:02:53.62 really are set apart as something separate there. 00:02:53.65\00:02:57.83 And so we're gonna take this program 00:02:57.86\00:03:00.13 to have a look at that. Okay. 00:03:00.16\00:03:02.28 So, where are we picking up then? 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.68 Well, I want to talk about the prologue 00:03:03.71\00:03:06.56 as a whole for a minute. 00:03:06.59\00:03:08.39 Those three things about it that scholars have discovered 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.66 that are really interesting. Okay. 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.50 Why don't you start with the first five verses 00:03:13.53\00:03:16.17 and just read them for us? 00:03:16.20\00:03:17.95 "In the beginning was the Word, 00:03:17.98\00:03:19.83 and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:03:19.86\00:03:23.76 He was in the beginning with God. 00:03:23.79\00:03:25.93 All things were made through him, 00:03:25.96\00:03:27.78 and without him nothing was made that was made, 00:03:27.81\00:03:31.43 in him was life, and the life was the light of men. 00:03:31.46\00:03:35.63 And the light shines in the darkness, 00:03:35.66\00:03:38.26 and the darkness did not comprehend it." 00:03:38.29\00:03:41.63 Is that a little bit different than normal writing? It does. 00:03:41.66\00:03:45.06 It sounds like, it repeats itself. Yeah. 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.36 Yeah, there's a lot of repetition here. 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.41 You know, in the English language, 00:03:49.44\00:03:52.46 poetry is usually through rhyme. 00:03:52.49\00:03:56.21 You know, the last word kind of sounds the same. 00:03:56.24\00:04:00.21 But in Hebrew poetry, 00:04:00.24\00:04:02.39 it was rhythm and repetition that made it. 00:04:02.42\00:04:06.71 And scholars have noticed this looks like poetry here. 00:04:06.74\00:04:11.13 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, 00:04:11.16\00:04:14.88 and the Word was God. 00:04:14.91\00:04:16.71 He was with God in the beginning." 00:04:16.74\00:04:19.70 This repletion and even in the English translation 00:04:19.73\00:04:23.13 you can feel like, you're getting a cadence going. 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.10 And then something else happens in verses 4 and 5. 00:04:26.13\00:04:30.07 You notice it says, "In it was life, 00:04:30.10\00:04:33.77 and the life was the light of men. 00:04:33.80\00:04:36.74 And the light shone in the darkness, 00:04:36.77\00:04:38.94 and the darkness didn't comprehend." 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.01 I called that "Stair-step parallelism." 00:04:42.04\00:04:45.11 It's like, you know, you have this double mention 00:04:45.14\00:04:48.16 here in verse 4 of life 00:04:48.19\00:04:51.30 and then there's a double mention of light 00:04:51.33\00:04:52.97 and then the double mention of darkness, 00:04:53.00\00:04:55.18 but the life is the light 00:04:55.21\00:04:56.58 and the light shines in the darkness, 00:04:56.61\00:04:58.10 they're linked together like a staircase, climbing up. 00:04:58.13\00:05:02.00 So you have two different forms of poetry here. 00:05:02.03\00:05:06.97 And what do you think is happening here? 00:05:07.00\00:05:10.11 You got a gospel in early book, 00:05:10.14\00:05:13.23 why would there be poetry in here all of a sudden? 00:05:13.26\00:05:15.38 Any idea? 00:05:15.41\00:05:16.80 I don't know, but it sounds also like a song 00:05:16.83\00:05:19.41 you could probably make a song out of this. Okay. 00:05:19.44\00:05:21.78 Yeah, songs-- songs usually start with poetry. 00:05:21.81\00:05:25.02 Where would the early church have songs? 00:05:25.05\00:05:27.70 Well, we know that they sing songs, 00:05:27.73\00:05:29.49 so possibly from the Book of Psalms or no songs. 00:05:29.52\00:05:34.46 Yeah, the Psalms in the Hebrew Bible 00:05:34.49\00:05:37.97 would probably been sung in the synagogues. 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.19 And we know from Paul that early churches 00:05:40.22\00:05:43.86 in their worship would sing songs. 00:05:43.89\00:05:46.66 So that was part of the thing. 00:05:46.69\00:05:48.06 So John seems to have taken an early Christian hymn 00:05:48.09\00:05:53.93 and built it into the prologue of the gospel. 00:05:53.96\00:05:57.42 So something that they were singing 00:05:57.45\00:06:00.22 and there's language in here 00:06:00.25\00:06:01.62 that seems earlier than the time when-- 00:06:01.65\00:06:03.87 of the actual writing of the New Testament. 00:06:03.90\00:06:05.90 There's actually four or five hymns in the New Testament. 00:06:05.93\00:06:10.64 Most famous one is Philippians 2:6-11, 00:06:10.67\00:06:14.70 where you know, Jesus is with God in heaven 00:06:14.73\00:06:17.94 and He comes down and humbles Himself 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.77 and then gets exalted again. 00:06:20.80\00:06:22.49 That has all the sound of poetry again to it. 00:06:22.52\00:06:26.55 And all the hymns are similar in the themes. 00:06:26.58\00:06:29.53 You know, about God coming down and going back, 00:06:29.56\00:06:32.31 that's the theme of all the hymns. 00:06:32.34\00:06:34.33 So John takes an early Christian hymn. 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.46 He is connecting with church people 00:06:36.49\00:06:39.60 who would read this gospel. 00:06:39.63\00:06:41.00 He is connecting with them, right at the start. 00:06:41.03\00:06:43.18 So that's the neat part when you see that. 00:06:43.21\00:06:47.39 There's another aspect here it's a chiasm, 00:06:47.42\00:06:50.74 and that may not mean anything to you, 00:06:50.77\00:06:53.23 but it comes from the Greek letter "X." 00:06:53.26\00:06:56.03 You know the idea of like, a pyramid type of thing. 00:06:56.06\00:07:00.79 Notice right at the beginning, it says, 00:07:00.82\00:07:02.83 "In the beginning was the Word, 00:07:02.86\00:07:05.62 and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." 00:07:05.65\00:07:09.19 In verse 1 and then if you hold your finger 00:07:09.22\00:07:11.93 then go to verse 18, 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.18 it says, "No one has ever seen God, 00:07:14.21\00:07:17.07 but God the One and Only 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.47 who was at the Father's side, has made him known." 00:07:18.50\00:07:22.58 So it's about the relationship 00:07:22.61\00:07:25.24 between God and the Word in verse 1 00:07:25.27\00:07:28.74 and then again in verse 18. 00:07:28.77\00:07:31.27 But then when you get to verse 3 it says, 00:07:31.30\00:07:33.23 "Through him all things were made." 00:07:33.26\00:07:36.42 And there's a special word about 'made' 00:07:36.45\00:07:39.72 and you go to verse 17, 00:07:39.75\00:07:41.93 "For the law was given through Moses, 00:07:41.96\00:07:44.23 but grace and truths came through Jesus Christ." 00:07:44.26\00:07:47.45 Now that translation misses it completely. 00:07:47.48\00:07:50.85 But what is your say from verse 17. 00:07:50.88\00:07:52.49 Actually, it says the same thing, 00:07:52.52\00:07:53.89 "For the law was given through Moses, 00:07:53.92\00:07:55.81 but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.58 This Greek words for "came" and Greek words for "is," 00:07:58.61\00:08:02.29 this isn't that. It's the word 'becoming.' 00:08:02.32\00:08:06.73 And in Genesis 1, 00:08:06.76\00:08:10.39 it uses the word 'becoming' for creation. 00:08:10.42\00:08:13.55 It came to be, you see. 00:08:13.58\00:08:15.96 So in verse 3, everything came to be through the word. 00:08:15.99\00:08:20.92 In verse 17, the grace 00:08:20.95\00:08:24.53 and truth came to be in Jesus Christ. 00:08:24.56\00:08:28.06 So unfortunately, there is one of those times 00:08:28.09\00:08:29.58 where English translation lets us down 00:08:29.61\00:08:31.95 and we miss the parallels. 00:08:31.98\00:08:34.73 Verse 1 and verse 18 are parallel. 00:08:34.76\00:08:36.74 Verse 3 and 17 are parallel. 00:08:36.77\00:08:39.47 Verse 6 and 15, John the Baptist is mentioned twice 00:08:39.50\00:08:43.14 and those are parallel. 00:08:43.17\00:08:44.77 So it's like a big pyramid. 00:08:44.80\00:08:47.46 The beginning and the end is together 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.45 and then like a stair-step and that points to the middle. 00:08:49.48\00:08:54.30 Now, why is this, 00:08:54.33\00:08:55.73 why even bother telling you this? 00:08:55.76\00:08:57.97 It's because in the Hebrew mind, 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.79 they had a different kind of logic than we have. 00:09:00.82\00:09:04.28 In our Western logic, A+B equals what? 00:09:04.31\00:09:09.17 C. C. 00:09:09.20\00:09:10.57 You see, so there is a linear kind of a thing. 00:09:10.60\00:09:13.63 And it's going somewhere. 00:09:13.66\00:09:15.99 So where is the climax? 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.96 At the end. A+B, there is the climax. 00:09:17.99\00:09:21.95 In Hebrew logic, it's different. A+B equals A enhanced. 00:09:21.98\00:09:28.29 In other words, you go from A to B 00:09:28.32\00:09:30.67 and then you come back to A, but the A is bigger now. 00:09:30.70\00:09:35.29 Like a musical scale. 00:09:35.32\00:09:38.31 You have the A key and when you go through, 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.91 you come back to A, 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.31 but know there's more vibrations. 00:09:42.34\00:09:43.72 You see, that's kind of like that. 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.62 And in the Hebrew logic, the emphasis is not on the end, 00:09:45.65\00:09:50.21 but in the middle. 00:09:50.24\00:09:52.37 In the Book of Revelation I have come to feel 00:09:52.40\00:09:55.12 that the Book of Revelation is a giant pyramid like this. 00:09:55.15\00:09:58.98 And if that's true, 00:09:59.01\00:10:00.91 then the key to Book of Revelation 00:10:00.94\00:10:02.57 is in the middle chapters 12, 13, and 14. 00:10:02.60\00:10:06.00 And that's where the crucial things are happening. 00:10:06.03\00:10:09.23 So when you understand the Hebrew mindset 00:10:09.26\00:10:12.44 then you know where to look. 00:10:12.47\00:10:13.84 And what's in the middle of the prologue? 00:10:13.87\00:10:15.81 It's verses 12 and 13. 00:10:15.84\00:10:18.45 "But as many as received Him, 00:10:18.48\00:10:20.50 to them He gave the right to become children of God, 00:10:20.53\00:10:23.91 to those who believe in His name, 00:10:23.94\00:10:26.57 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, 00:10:26.60\00:10:30.67 nor of the will of man, but of God." 00:10:30.70\00:10:33.97 So it's telling this grand story about how God came down 00:10:34.00\00:10:39.16 and became one of us and then went back to, 00:10:39.19\00:10:44.12 you know, and send it back to heaven. 00:10:44.15\00:10:46.42 And what's the point of telling that story? 00:10:46.45\00:10:49.06 We find that in the middle here. 00:10:49.09\00:10:51.15 The point is so that people can come to God. 00:10:51.18\00:10:54.78 They can become children of God 00:10:54.81\00:10:56.85 and then becoming children of God, 00:10:56.88\00:10:59.83 they are transformed become new people. 00:10:59.86\00:11:02.68 So what God did in Jesus 00:11:02.71\00:11:05.21 as here seen in the Gospel of John for our sakes? 00:11:05.24\00:11:08.12 That we could understand God as He really was 00:11:08.15\00:11:12.13 that we could appreciate 00:11:12.16\00:11:13.83 something different about His character. 00:11:13.86\00:11:16.88 If you ask the average person, 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.42 what God is like? What would they say? 00:11:18.45\00:11:22.56 I don't know. 00:11:22.59\00:11:23.96 The most people think of God as kind of out there, 00:11:23.99\00:11:28.76 scary, maybe judgmental, 00:11:28.79\00:11:34.79 maybe even arbitrary. 00:11:34.82\00:11:36.77 You know, you have all these views of God 00:11:36.80\00:11:39.56 that people who don't know Him, have it, 00:11:39.59\00:11:41.71 and sometimes even Christian people 00:11:41.74\00:11:43.67 think of God in that way. 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.87 How is God gonna disabuse us of all of those views? 00:11:45.90\00:11:50.29 By revealing Himself in a human being. 00:11:50.32\00:11:53.49 And that's what the Gospel of John is all about, 00:11:53.52\00:11:55.43 is this revelation of what God is really like. 00:11:55.46\00:11:59.65 What is Jesus like? What is Jesus mean to you? 00:11:59.68\00:12:03.49 Well, Jesus to me, is a close personal friend, 00:12:03.52\00:12:07.78 He is my-- Not scary? 00:12:07.81\00:12:09.86 No. Okay. 00:12:09.89\00:12:11.26 I don't have any scary friends. 00:12:11.29\00:12:13.37 You know, if somebody scary, 00:12:13.40\00:12:15.23 you don't want to miss the friend. 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.63 Right. It's a logic there. 00:12:16.66\00:12:18.64 What is that say about a relationship to God? 00:12:18.67\00:12:21.24 Right. 00:12:21.27\00:12:22.64 If we have a scary God, 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.04 we're not gonna wanna be close to Him. Right. 00:12:24.07\00:12:25.44 Yeah. Right. 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.74 And that's how I view God that He is a close friend. 00:12:27.77\00:12:32.22 When I pray I open my heart to God as to a friend. 00:12:32.25\00:12:36.16 And I hope that even those who are viewing 00:12:36.19\00:12:40.81 perhaps do not have that view of God. 00:12:40.84\00:12:45.20 That the God is someone up there 00:12:45.23\00:12:47.92 and just pointing fingers at our sins 00:12:47.95\00:12:50.89 and that He's far distant from us, 00:12:50.92\00:12:54.67 but He is not, He is close to us, 00:12:54.70\00:12:58.18 and He wants to draw closer to us more. 00:12:58.21\00:13:03.23 This is good. 00:13:03.26\00:13:04.63 And that's what the Gospel John is all about. 00:13:04.66\00:13:07.30 That view of God is possible for us 00:13:07.33\00:13:10.59 because of the God we saw in Jesus. 00:13:10.62\00:13:13.48 And that's the key to this book. 00:13:13.51\00:13:16.03 Everybody else is experiencing Jesus is a human being. 00:13:16.06\00:13:19.88 It's only the reader through the Holy Spirit 00:13:19.91\00:13:22.50 that sees this deeper dimension who Jesus really is. 00:13:22.53\00:13:25.69 And Jesus came to reveal God's character. 00:13:25.72\00:13:28.23 Is that right? That's right. 00:13:28.26\00:13:31.40 It says a very explicitly 00:13:31.43\00:13:32.80 in this gospel over and over again. 00:13:32.83\00:13:34.74 So in this chiasm then, 00:13:34.77\00:13:38.15 He is connecting with Hebrew minded people, 00:13:38.18\00:13:40.89 Jewish people who may have had a view of God 00:13:40.92\00:13:44.35 as somewhat distance 00:13:44.38\00:13:45.75 and sometimes terrifying like, Mount Sinai. 00:13:45.78\00:13:48.47 And He wants now for them to see 00:13:48.50\00:13:50.77 that God doesn't want them to be slaves, 00:13:50.80\00:13:54.34 He wants them to be friends. 00:13:54.37\00:13:56.52 And you know that's the move 00:13:56.55\00:13:58.59 that happens in the Gospel of John. 00:13:58.62\00:14:01.06 It was good to have you with us again 00:14:01.09\00:14:02.99 and this time we'll take a quick break 00:14:03.02\00:14:05.12 and then we'll come back to the prologue, 00:14:05.15\00:14:07.35 you may want to read it during the break. 00:14:07.38\00:14:09.03
