And welcome back, 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 we are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 and we are with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:04.20\00:00:05.75 Dr. Jon Paulien, we are-- 00:00:05.78\00:00:08.15 we were talking about the unique features of the Gospel of John. 00:00:08.18\00:00:12.49 Tell us more about those? Yeah. 00:00:12.52\00:00:15.20 Yeah, Gospel of John does a lot of things 00:00:15.23\00:00:17.83 that none of the other gospels do. 00:00:17.86\00:00:19.51 For example, in the Gospel of John 00:00:19.54\00:00:22.72 Jesus is much more assertive. 00:00:22.75\00:00:26.38 He really gets on people sometimes. 00:00:26.41\00:00:29.34 He could even be combative 00:00:29.37\00:00:31.78 kind of sarcastic at times 00:00:31.81\00:00:33.88 which is not what you would expect from Jesus 00:00:33.91\00:00:35.97 in Matthew, Mark and Luke. 00:00:36.00\00:00:37.37 So the Jesus portrayed in John 00:00:37.40\00:00:39.72 is quite a bit different in personality from the others. 00:00:39.75\00:00:42.75 You might say, well, you know why is that the case? 00:00:42.78\00:00:45.47 Well, if Jesus is representing God to us, 00:00:45.50\00:00:48.65 He might just be little bit bigger 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.27 than any of our own personalities. 00:00:51.30\00:00:53.80 But for example, in chapter 844 00:00:53.83\00:00:56.70 he calls people "Sons of the devil." 00:00:56.73\00:00:59.68 If I would have say that to you and really mean it, 00:00:59.71\00:01:02.67 you know, wow, 00:01:02.70\00:01:04.32 you son of a devil, you, you know, it's kind of-- 00:01:04.35\00:01:07.47 you would hope I was joking, you see. 00:01:07.50\00:01:09.74 So Jesus is very serious when He says that. 00:01:09.77\00:01:12.35 And another one, I remember in Chapter 10. 00:01:12.38\00:01:17.34 They're mad at Jesus and they are picking up stones 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.03 to throw at Him and he says, "Time out." 00:01:20.06\00:01:22.72 He says, "You're about to stone Me, 00:01:22.75\00:01:24.59 but I've a question. 00:01:24.62\00:01:25.99 For which of My good works are you stoning me?" 00:01:26.02\00:01:29.54 You see, now that's funny. 00:01:29.57\00:01:30.94 You know, you'd stop and think about it. 00:01:30.97\00:01:32.45 So Jesus is very assertive. 00:01:32.48\00:01:34.26 I mean, He instead of disappearing 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.47 like He would in Luke, He starts, 00:01:36.50\00:01:39.42 you know, challenging His stoners. 00:01:39.45\00:01:43.53 What they are doing here. 00:01:43.56\00:01:46.18 You've got narratives in the Gospel of John 00:01:46.21\00:01:48.30 that are nowhere else, Nicodemus, 00:01:48.33\00:01:50.50 the Samaritan woman for example, 00:01:50.53\00:01:52.88 the Lazarus story, these are not found, 00:01:52.91\00:01:57.47 you know, the tomb of Lazarus, 00:01:57.50\00:01:58.87 and so these are not found in any other gospel. 00:01:58.90\00:02:02.52 Often in Matthew, Mark and Luke there are three party dialogues, 00:02:02.55\00:02:07.58 where you have Jesus talking with two other people 00:02:07.61\00:02:10.76 or two groups or something and it's going back and forth. 00:02:10.79\00:02:14.49 In the Gospel of John it's always one on one. 00:02:14.52\00:02:17.35 And He will speak to one person 00:02:17.38\00:02:19.27 and then He will speak to another 00:02:19.30\00:02:20.84 and so on, so that's a difference. 00:02:20.87\00:02:24.21 I mentioned in an earlier program 00:02:24.24\00:02:25.99 that John doesn't have parables. 00:02:26.02\00:02:29.11 You know, like sower goes out to sow 00:02:29.14\00:02:32.30 and he puts out the grain and some other grain does well 00:02:32.33\00:02:35.78 and some gets choked out and, you know, so on. 00:02:35.81\00:02:38.23 Doesn't do parables, 00:02:38.26\00:02:39.63 the closest thing to a parable would be divine and the branches 00:02:39.66\00:02:43.56 or maybe the good shepherd, but those are analogies, 00:02:43.59\00:02:47.44 they are not really parables. 00:02:47.47\00:02:49.31 So in John the stories themselves become parables 00:02:49.34\00:02:52.82 and we'll see how that works in future programs. 00:02:52.85\00:02:56.64 In the Gospel of John, Jesus is not a teacher. 00:02:56.67\00:02:59.70 He doesn't talk for chapters long. 00:02:59.73\00:03:03.24 He simply acts and His sayings are short and clipped and so on. 00:03:03.27\00:03:08.67 And one more thing He said, in the Gospel of John 00:03:08.70\00:03:11.14 Jesus repeatedly visits Jerusalem, 00:03:11.17\00:03:14.92 where as in Matthew, Mark and Luke, 00:03:14.95\00:03:17.06 His main visit to Jerusalem is really the only one. 00:03:17.09\00:03:20.89 In Luke, He visits as a child, 00:03:20.92\00:03:23.59 but in His ministry-- He does His ministry in Galilee 00:03:23.62\00:03:27.17 and then comes to Jerusalem. 00:03:27.20\00:03:28.74 So John is sharing a bunch of earlier visits to Jerusalem 00:03:28.77\00:03:32.65 that aren't mentioned in the others. 00:03:32.68\00:03:34.42 So when we look at John uniquely there's a whole lot here 00:03:34.45\00:03:38.55 that we want to pay attention to. 00:03:38.58\00:03:40.84 And one of the most exciting 00:03:40.87\00:03:44.27 features of the gospel is the narrator. 00:03:44.30\00:03:48.41 You know, you noticed that sometimes in stories 00:03:48.44\00:03:50.95 there's a narrator who breaks in and he says, 00:03:50.98\00:03:52.88 "This is what was going on," you know. 00:03:52.91\00:03:55.97 Morally he was dead or whatever. 00:03:56.00\00:03:57.64 And so there's a narrator in the Gospel of John. 00:03:57.67\00:04:01.53 Let's get acquainted with it. Sure. 00:04:01.56\00:04:02.93 It's in Chapter 1 and you'll find him 00:04:02.96\00:04:05.94 all the way through the gospel, but Chapter 1 verse 38. 00:04:05.97\00:04:12.80 John 1:38, why don't you read that? 00:04:14.95\00:04:17.60 "Then Jesus turned and seeing them following, 00:04:17.63\00:04:20.01 He said to them, "What do you seek?" 00:04:20.04\00:04:22.50 They said to Him, "Rabbi" 00:04:22.53\00:04:24.51 which is to say when translated Teacher, 00:04:24.54\00:04:26.96 "where are You staying?" Okay. 00:04:26.99\00:04:29.50 Where's the narrator there? When-- 00:04:29.53\00:04:34.23 He's interpreting Rabbi, see, right in it. 00:04:34.26\00:04:37.24 Here, Rabbi, where are you staying? 00:04:37.27\00:04:38.69 He interrupts that. 00:04:38.72\00:04:40.20 So obviously Jesus did not say that. 00:04:40.23\00:04:41.65 Jesus didn't say. 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.05 You know, Rabbi, which is interpreted being teacher. 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.23 Where are you staying? 00:04:45.26\00:04:46.63 No, the people didn't say that. 00:04:46.66\00:04:48.03 That's the narrator inserting, why? 00:04:48.06\00:04:50.66 Because the reader may not understand that term. 00:04:50.69\00:04:53.49 So the narrator steps in 00:04:53.52\00:04:55.57 and he tells the information that they didn't know. 00:04:55.60\00:04:59.40 Look at verse 39. 00:04:59.43\00:05:01.51 "He said to them, "Come, and see." 00:05:01.54\00:05:03.98 They came and saw where he was staying, 00:05:04.01\00:05:05.73 and remained with him that day. 00:05:05.76\00:05:07.81 It was about the tenth hour. Okay. 00:05:07.84\00:05:10.43 You know my Bible has parenthesis. 00:05:10.46\00:05:12.30 For the tenth hour there? 00:05:12.33\00:05:13.70 That one and also the previous one, 00:05:13.73\00:05:15.18 which is to say when translated teacher. Yeah. 00:05:15.21\00:05:17.62 You see, so the translator there is recognizing 00:05:17.65\00:05:21.21 that there is something else going on here. 00:05:21.24\00:05:22.95 It's not part of the dialogue. 00:05:22.98\00:05:24.65 Yeah, it's not part of the dialogue, exactly. 00:05:24.68\00:05:26.88 So Gospel of John has this feature 00:05:26.91\00:05:29.65 constantly jumping in there. 00:05:29.68\00:05:32.31 You know, well, it was about the tenth hour. 00:05:32.34\00:05:34.17 Explaining stuff that the reader needs to know 00:05:34.20\00:05:37.48 to fully understand what is happening here. 00:05:37.51\00:05:40.23 Go to verse 41. 00:05:40.26\00:05:42.36 "And he brought him to Jesus. 00:05:42.39\00:05:44.77 Now when Jesus looked at him, 00:05:44.80\00:05:46.25 he said, you are Simon the son of Jonah 00:05:46.28\00:05:49.00 and shall be called Cephas, which is translated, a stone." 00:05:49.03\00:05:53.84 Which again we see the parenthesis in my version. 00:05:53.87\00:05:56.24 That's right. That's right. 00:05:56.27\00:05:57.64 So he's interpreting what that means, okay. 00:05:57.67\00:06:02.07 So there you see how the narrator 00:06:02.10\00:06:05.27 kind of inserts himself. 00:06:05.30\00:06:07.20 And it's interesting about this narrator. 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.09 First of all he knows everything. 00:06:09.12\00:06:12.23 The narrator knows what characters thought, 00:06:12.26\00:06:15.66 what they felt, what they intended to do. 00:06:15.69\00:06:19.86 You know, he knows what Judas is thinking at the supper table. 00:06:19.89\00:06:23.52 He knows what the disciples are thinking about Judas 00:06:23.55\00:06:26.77 and all this, narrator keeps plugging it in. 00:06:26.80\00:06:30.33 He can be everywhere. 00:06:30.36\00:06:33.72 He's there with Jesus and the Samaritan woman. 00:06:33.75\00:06:37.54 But then the disciples show up 00:06:37.57\00:06:39.68 and the Samaritan woman goes to town. 00:06:39.71\00:06:41.82 Narrator follows her to town 00:06:41.85\00:06:43.92 and at the same time he knows 00:06:43.95\00:06:45.32 what Jesus and the disciples are talking about with each other. 00:06:45.35\00:06:48.04 So the narrator can know, knows everything. 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.04 And the narrator can go anywhere 00:06:51.07\00:06:54.89 and he also knows what's in the future. 00:06:54.92\00:07:00.03 There are several times in the gospel where it says, 00:07:00.06\00:07:03.03 you know, they did this and so and he says, 00:07:03.06\00:07:04.91 but they didn't really understand at this time, 00:07:04.94\00:07:07.36 because the Holy Spirit hadn't come yet. 00:07:07.39\00:07:09.56 So the narrator jumps in and he says, 00:07:09.59\00:07:11.38 these guys are kind of dumb right now, 00:07:11.41\00:07:13.04 but they're gonna get smart later on. 00:07:13.07\00:07:14.68 So he knows the future of what's going on in the story. 00:07:14.71\00:07:18.83 So lot of people-- 00:07:18.86\00:07:20.93 So he's kind of helping the reader understand. 00:07:20.96\00:07:23.66 You know, you probably don't know what I mean by this, 00:07:23.69\00:07:27.17 but this is what it really means. 00:07:27.20\00:07:29.51 And so that's, that's helpful. Yeah. 00:07:29.54\00:07:32.41 And since you watch for the narrator as you go through 00:07:32.44\00:07:35.39 and the narrator gives you the information that you need. 00:07:35.42\00:07:39.42 And one thing you'll notice is the narrator is always right. 00:07:39.45\00:07:44.14 Because-- And you know he's right 00:07:44.17\00:07:46.14 because what he is saying 00:07:46.17\00:07:47.54 connects with everything else you know about the situation. 00:07:47.57\00:07:50.68 Through the narrator you know stuff 00:07:50.71\00:07:53.63 that the people in the story don't know. 00:07:53.66\00:07:56.62 So it's like inside information. 00:07:56.65\00:07:58.13 And he knows it because he was there. Yeah. 00:07:58.16\00:08:00.52 He saw it. Yeah. 00:08:00.55\00:08:02.21 So in one sense, I would say 00:08:02.24\00:08:03.63 the narrator sounds to me like the Holy Spirit, 00:08:03.66\00:08:06.44 providing he is-- John is illustrating 00:08:06.47\00:08:09.77 how through the Holy Spirit that extra information 00:08:09.80\00:08:13.04 comes where everything make sense. 00:08:13.07\00:08:15.41 You know, about Christian faith. 00:08:15.44\00:08:18.02 It makes perfect sense to those who walk with Jesus. 00:08:18.05\00:08:21.15 To somebody who doesn't have that relationship, 00:08:21.18\00:08:23.59 it may make no sense at all. 00:08:23.62\00:08:25.69 And here you see why, 00:08:25.72\00:08:27.50 that when people are lacking in certain information, 00:08:27.53\00:08:31.52 they can't make the decision that they need to make. 00:08:31.55\00:08:34.60 And so the Holy Sprit is constantly trying 00:08:34.63\00:08:36.70 to bring us the information we need. 00:08:36.73\00:08:39.47 In the Gospel of John people are constantly 00:08:39.50\00:08:43.09 misunderstanding Jesus. 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.12 You know, that brings us back to that second generation thing. 00:08:46.15\00:08:49.82 We would like to think 00:08:49.85\00:08:51.22 that if we were there with Jesus personally 00:08:51.25\00:08:54.72 that, you know, we would follow Him. 00:08:54.75\00:08:57.82 Man, we'd be better off. 00:08:57.85\00:08:59.46 In the Gospel of John the people with Jesus 00:08:59.49\00:09:01.98 never seemed to get it, they don't understand. 00:09:02.01\00:09:05.06 Take a look at Chapter 14. 00:09:05.09\00:09:06.79 John Chapter 14 and verses 7 to 9. 00:09:09.36\00:09:17.02 "If you had known me, 00:09:17.05\00:09:18.53 you would have known my Father also. 00:09:18.56\00:09:21.22 And from now on you know him and have seen him. 00:09:21.25\00:09:24.42 Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, 00:09:24.45\00:09:27.39 and it is sufficient for us. 00:09:27.42\00:09:29.61 Jesus said to him, I have been with you so long, 00:09:29.64\00:09:32.61 and yet you have not known me, Philip? 00:09:32.64\00:09:34.84 He who has seen Me has seen the Father, 00:09:34.87\00:09:37.75 so how can you say, 'Show us the Father?'" 00:09:37.78\00:09:41.58 You see there's a misunderstanding going on here. 00:09:41.61\00:09:44.79 Jesus makes a statement. 00:09:44.82\00:09:47.62 The disciples take Him literally, you know. 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.62 Jesus says, "I've shown you the Father." 00:09:50.65\00:09:54.38 Philip says, "No, You haven't." 00:09:54.41\00:09:57.06 And Jesus says, "Yes I have." 00:09:57.09\00:09:58.83 If you've seen Me, you've seen the Father. 00:09:58.86\00:10:03.26 So in this misunderstanding that's going on, 00:10:03.29\00:10:07.24 it highlights the fact 00:10:07.27\00:10:09.48 that the Gospel of John wants you to go deeper. 00:10:09.51\00:10:12.13 If you take the stories only on the surface 00:10:12.16\00:10:15.68 you will misunderstand. 00:10:15.71\00:10:17.93 And if you think that being with the physical Jesus 00:10:17.96\00:10:21.61 makes all the difference, 00:10:21.64\00:10:23.16 just take a look at those who are with him. 00:10:23.19\00:10:25.17 They never did get it. 00:10:25.20\00:10:26.61 Over and over in this gospel you have this, 00:10:26.64\00:10:30.11 you know, Jesus makes a statement, 00:10:30.14\00:10:31.65 they respond taking it literally 00:10:31.68\00:10:34.58 and then Jesus or the narrator responds once more. 00:10:34.61\00:10:39.01 For example in Chapter 8 you have the story 00:10:39.04\00:10:41.96 that before Abraham was, I am. 00:10:41.99\00:10:47.99 Well, you know, they were saying, 00:10:48.02\00:10:50.36 you are how old and you say you've seen Abraham? 00:10:50.39\00:10:53.73 You know, well, they did get it. 00:10:53.76\00:10:55.15 In what sense is Jesus seeing Abraham? 00:10:55.18\00:10:57.43 He's saying well, I was with Abraham 00:10:57.46\00:11:00.36 on the mountain there when he sacrificed Isaac. 00:11:00.39\00:11:03.44 I was there with him, you see. 00:11:03.47\00:11:06.36 But that doesn't make sense, 00:11:06.39\00:11:07.76 but that would make sense to the reader, why? 00:11:07.79\00:11:11.30 Why do you think it would make sense to the reader? 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.42 It would just somehow provide some kind of assistance. 00:11:13.45\00:11:20.98 Because the first chapter of the book is the prologue 00:11:21.01\00:11:24.29 and it tells us who Jesus is. 00:11:24.32\00:11:26.71 He was the Logos. He was with the Father. 00:11:26.74\00:11:31.12 He was equal with the Father 00:11:31.15\00:11:32.76 and he came down and was made flesh. 00:11:32.79\00:11:35.48 See the reader knows all that. 00:11:35.51\00:11:38.00 So in all of these stories 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.99 the reader knows the moment Jesus speaks. 00:11:40.02\00:11:43.54 The reader knows what He means, 00:11:43.57\00:11:45.97 but the disciples don't get it, 00:11:46.00\00:11:47.66 the Pharisees don't get it, 00:11:47.69\00:11:49.49 the Samaritan woman doesn't get it. 00:11:49.52\00:11:51.12 So what took the disciples several years 00:11:51.15\00:11:54.08 to understand what Jesus said, 00:11:54.11\00:11:55.95 immediately the reader will understand as he reads it. 00:11:55.98\00:12:00.53 So you and I can read it. Okay, that's what it meant. 00:12:00.56\00:12:02.55 It doesn't-- we don't have to spend, 00:12:02.58\00:12:03.95 you know, several years to know what Jesus was talking about. 00:12:03.98\00:12:07.56 And in a sense these misunderstandings 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.81 are teaching us how to understand this gospel. 00:12:09.84\00:12:14.15 Don't take the surface level, you will misunderstand. 00:12:14.18\00:12:18.23 When you go beneath the surface, 00:12:18.26\00:12:19.63 like divine and the branches the surface level is good. 00:12:19.66\00:12:23.21 You get the story of Jesus, there's a lot to learn there, 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.67 but when you go a little bit deeper, 00:12:25.70\00:12:27.81 it opens fresh windows, 00:12:27.84\00:12:29.68 exciting pathways into the gospel. 00:12:29.71\00:12:32.40 Well, Dr. Paulien, this is exciting to know more. 00:12:32.43\00:12:35.00 And I wish that as I read the Bible 00:12:35.03\00:12:37.70 that I allow the Holy Sprit 00:12:37.73\00:12:39.61 to help me to understand more. Me too. 00:12:39.64\00:12:41.85 And friends, I hope that you too as you read God's word, 00:12:41.88\00:12:44.67 you can understand by God's spirit. 00:12:44.70\00:12:47.29
