Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.08\00:00:22.32 I'm so excited that you're able to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:22.35\00:00:26.20 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez 00:00:26.23\00:00:27.60 and we are studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:27.63\00:00:30.00 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, that's Jon. 00:00:30.03\00:00:33.40 We're not studying your gospel, right? 00:00:33.43\00:00:34.95 No, it's not my gospel. 00:00:34.98\00:00:36.35 I don't have an 'H' in my name. 00:00:36.38\00:00:38.51 All right, the last time 00:00:38.54\00:00:39.91 we were talking about the Gospel of John, 00:00:39.94\00:00:42.18 we left off saying that 00:00:42.21\00:00:45.19 John has a particular purpose in this gospel 00:00:45.22\00:00:49.18 and we read and that was found 00:00:49.21\00:00:51.19 in John 20:30, 31 and I'll read it. 00:00:51.22\00:00:55.23 And it says, "And truly Jesus did 00:00:55.26\00:00:58.53 many other signs in the presence of His disciples 00:00:58.56\00:01:01.39 which are not written in this book." 00:01:01.42\00:01:03.37 And the purpose is in the next verse. 00:01:03.40\00:01:05.52 "But these are written that you may believe 00:01:05.55\00:01:08.24 that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, 00:01:08.27\00:01:11.82 and that believing you may have life in His name." 00:01:11.85\00:01:15.75 Tell us more a little bit about this purpose. 00:01:15.78\00:01:18.35 In the Greek language which is the foundation 00:01:18.38\00:01:21.43 for all four of these gospels, 00:01:21.46\00:01:23.59 there are special forms for purpose. 00:01:23.62\00:01:26.24 There's actually several of them, 00:01:26.27\00:01:27.76 but one of the clearest ones is right here in this verse. 00:01:27.79\00:01:30.73 These things are written, 00:01:30.76\00:01:32.56 notice, I didn't write about lot of things 00:01:32.59\00:01:35.54 but the ones I wrote about I wrote about 00:01:35.57\00:01:38.65 in order that you might believe 00:01:38.68\00:01:42.54 and in order that believing you might have life. 00:01:42.57\00:01:47.02 So the purpose of the gospel is stated right here 00:01:47.05\00:01:51.80 that he has selected things which will help you to believe. 00:01:51.83\00:01:56.58 Now we've always taken this as all of us, 00:01:56.61\00:02:00.38 you know, well, he's writing to us. 00:02:00.41\00:02:03.06 But actually John has a more specific audience in mind 00:02:03.09\00:02:08.12 and it's when we discover that more specific audience 00:02:08.15\00:02:11.17 that I think this gospel become extremely exciting. 00:02:11.20\00:02:14.66 Then explain why it's the favorite gospel 00:02:14.69\00:02:18.09 of so many people? 00:02:18.12\00:02:19.49 Because of the purpose that John had. 00:02:19.52\00:02:22.79 So the question ultimately is 00:02:22.82\00:02:24.94 who is you, that he's referring to? 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.97 Who is the person that should read this gospel and believe? 00:02:27.00\00:02:31.50 Let's go back earlier and look at verses 24-28. 00:02:31.53\00:02:36.17 Would you read that for us, Deyvy? 00:02:36.20\00:02:38.00 We're still in Chapter 20. Still in Chapter 20, yeah. 00:02:38.03\00:02:40.47 Verses 24 through 28. 00:02:40.50\00:02:42.70 "Now Thomas, called the Twin, 00:02:42.73\00:02:44.54 one of the twelve was not with them when Jesus came. 00:02:44.57\00:02:47.88 The other disciples therefore said to him, 00:02:47.91\00:02:49.78 'We have seen the Lord.' 00:02:49.81\00:02:51.59 So he said to them, 00:02:51.62\00:02:52.99 'Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, 00:02:53.02\00:02:55.70 and put my finger into the print of the nails, 00:02:55.73\00:02:59.12 and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.' 00:02:59.15\00:03:03.58 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, 00:03:03.61\00:03:07.76 and Thomas with them. 00:03:07.79\00:03:09.33 Jesus came, the doors being shut, 00:03:09.36\00:03:11.52 and stood in the midst, and said, 'Peace to you.' 00:03:11.55\00:03:15.29 Then He said to Thomas, 'Reach your finger here, 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.29 and look at My hands, and reach your hand here, 00:03:18.32\00:03:21.48 and put it into My side. 00:03:21.51\00:03:23.94 Do not be unbelieving, but believing.' 00:03:23.97\00:03:27.32 And Thomas answered and said to Him, 00:03:27.35\00:03:29.30 'My Lord and my God.'" 00:03:29.33\00:03:31.62 Good answer, right? Mm-hmm 00:03:31.65\00:03:33.27 Okay, but what did he need to come to that answer? Faith. 00:03:33.30\00:03:38.67 He needed to do something, he needed to believe. 00:03:38.70\00:03:43.76 He needed to see. To see. 00:03:43.79\00:03:45.52 He needed to touch. 00:03:45.55\00:03:46.92 He needed Jesus physically present there. 00:03:46.95\00:03:50.28 You see that's the setting of this purpose statement. 00:03:50.31\00:03:53.10 Now come to verse 29, 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.59 Thomas says, "I'll never believe. 00:03:54.62\00:03:56.20 If I can't see him, if I can't touch him, 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.13 I'm not gonna believe." 00:03:58.16\00:03:59.53 Now look at verse 29. 00:03:59.56\00:04:01.17 "Then Jesus told to him, 00:04:01.20\00:04:03.73 'Because you have seen Me, you have believed.'" 00:04:03.76\00:04:07.42 You know check mark. He is okay with that. 00:04:07.45\00:04:10.45 But look what he says. 00:04:10.48\00:04:11.85 "Because you have seen Me, you've believed, 00:04:11.88\00:04:14.54 blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." 00:04:14.57\00:04:22.48 You see it's good. 00:04:22.51\00:04:25.35 Thomas, you know, was able to believe 00:04:25.38\00:04:28.09 now that he had Jesus present, but you and I don't. 00:04:28.12\00:04:31.24 How are we supposed to believe in Jesus? 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.36 If we held the same standard that Thomas had, 00:04:33.39\00:04:36.64 we would never believe. 00:04:36.67\00:04:38.69 So John recognizes that 00:04:38.72\00:04:40.77 there's gonna be people in the history of the world 00:04:40.80\00:04:44.46 who will not have the privilege of walking with Jesus 00:04:44.49\00:04:47.68 and touching Him and seeing Him the way these disciples had. 00:04:47.71\00:04:52.10 These people will need to learn to believe 00:04:52.13\00:04:56.04 without sight and without touch. 00:04:56.07\00:04:59.32 Now this gets even more exciting if we go to Chapter 21, 00:04:59.35\00:05:02.98 because Chapter 21 gives us the context 00:05:03.01\00:05:07.64 of this whole story and verses-- 00:05:07.67\00:05:12.45 would you read 20 through 23? 00:05:12.48\00:05:14.94 "Then Peter, turning around, 00:05:14.97\00:05:16.64 saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, 00:05:16.67\00:05:19.65 who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, 00:05:19.68\00:05:22.42 and said, 'Lord, who is the one who betrays You?' 00:05:22.45\00:05:25.45 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, 00:05:25.48\00:05:27.86 'But Lord, what about this man?' 00:05:27.89\00:05:30.60 Jesus said to him, 'If I will that he remain till I come, 00:05:30.63\00:05:34.57 what is that to you? You follow Me.'" 00:05:34.60\00:05:37.37 Okay, hold it right there. 00:05:37.40\00:05:39.39 See here you have the story that's told 00:05:39.42\00:05:41.68 of Jesus walking on the beach with Peter 00:05:41.71\00:05:45.82 and they are having a conversation. 00:05:45.85\00:05:47.41 We can get into that in a later program. 00:05:47.44\00:05:50.22 But in the middle of this conversation, 00:05:50.25\00:05:53.83 Peter notices that there's another disciple following 00:05:53.86\00:05:57.77 and that disciple, we're gonna discover 00:05:57.80\00:06:00.86 eventually is actually the author of this book 00:06:00.89\00:06:03.50 and here we call him John. 00:06:03.53\00:06:05.73 So Jesus is looking back at this other disciple 00:06:05.76\00:06:09.51 and saying, you know, you've talked to me 00:06:09.54\00:06:12.27 about where I'm going in life, what about him? 00:06:12.30\00:06:15.18 And Jesus says, none of your business. 00:06:15.21\00:06:18.42 And He says, take care of yourself kind of like. 00:06:18.45\00:06:20.76 But now notice verse 23 00:06:20.79\00:06:22.44 because this is an interesting window into the history. 00:06:22.47\00:06:26.25 "Then this saying went out among the brethren 00:06:26.28\00:06:28.55 that this disciple would not die. 00:06:28.59\00:06:31.42 Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, 00:06:31.45\00:06:34.83 but, 'If I will that he remain till I come, 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.26 what is that to you?'" 00:06:38.29\00:06:40.03 Now my version even says the rumor went abroad. 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.79 In the Greek it's just a saying or a word, 00:06:43.82\00:06:46.78 you know, saying went around. 00:06:46.81\00:06:49.39 This is the context of this gospel. 00:06:49.42\00:06:52.29 You see, people evidently remembered and told the story. 00:06:52.32\00:06:56.16 How Jesus walking on the beach. 00:06:56.19\00:06:58.20 Talking about John and said, 00:06:58.23\00:07:00.46 "If I decide he will live till I come, 00:07:00.49\00:07:02.92 what is that to you?" 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.63 And they thought about that 00:07:04.66\00:07:06.33 and they said, "Hey, John is not gonna die. 00:07:06.36\00:07:10.61 Jesus will come before John dies." 00:07:10.64\00:07:14.06 So the rumor is going out. 00:07:14.09\00:07:15.86 Now here is the problem, John is getting old. 00:07:15.89\00:07:19.11 We feel the gospel is probably written 00:07:19.14\00:07:21.07 about 70 years after the cross, 00:07:21.10\00:07:22.99 so he might have been 90, 85, 90, maybe even more. 00:07:23.02\00:07:27.56 So either he's gonna die soon or Jesus is gonna come. 00:07:27.59\00:07:32.42 What's going to happen 00:07:32.45\00:07:34.04 if people believe that rumor and John dies? 00:07:34.07\00:07:38.11 It'd be devastating. 00:07:38.14\00:07:40.47 So the context in which this gospel is written 00:07:40.50\00:07:43.76 is the impending death of its author 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.91 and he is preparing the people 00:07:46.94\00:07:50.11 for a time when he won't be there. 00:07:50.14\00:07:53.26 Now who is John? He is the last living disciple. 00:07:53.29\00:07:59.11 All the other disciples are dead. 00:07:59.14\00:08:01.28 He is the last link with Jesus. 00:08:01.31\00:08:06.73 He is the last personal alive who saw Jesus, 00:08:06.76\00:08:10.07 touched Him, heard His voice. 00:08:10.10\00:08:13.90 Can you imagine the loss? 00:08:13.93\00:08:17.69 When he dies the church will feel like 00:08:17.72\00:08:20.20 our link to Jesus is gone. 00:08:20.23\00:08:22.54 What are we going to do? 00:08:22.57\00:08:23.95 So this gospel is address to another generation. 00:08:23.98\00:08:28.64 The first generation is the generation 00:08:28.67\00:08:31.16 that walked and talked with Jesus. 00:08:31.19\00:08:33.44 The next generation is a generation 00:08:33.47\00:08:35.91 that had no physical contact, 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.00 no sight, no sound, no hearing, no touch 00:08:38.03\00:08:42.17 and yet they were struggling to go on with their faith. 00:08:42.20\00:08:46.04 It is for that generation that this was written. 00:08:46.07\00:08:49.13 Now let me show you a couple of places 00:08:49.16\00:08:51.10 in which this occurs, John 17. 00:08:51.13\00:08:55.53 It's very exciting when I discovered this. 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.35 It just blew my mind. 00:08:58.38\00:09:00.21 John 17:2, Jesus says, 00:09:00.24\00:09:07.01 "You have granted Him" speaking of Himself 00:09:07.04\00:09:09.56 "authority over all people, that He might give eternal life 00:09:09.59\00:09:12.69 to all those You have given Him." 00:09:12.72\00:09:14.79 Here in the first part of this chapter, 00:09:14.82\00:09:17.39 Jesus is praying and He prays for Himself. 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.66 "Dear Father, glorify Me as You were glorified." 00:09:20.69\00:09:24.18 So He prays for Himself. 00:09:24.21\00:09:26.06 Then notice verse 12, 00:09:26.09\00:09:28.90 "While I was with them, I protected them 00:09:28.93\00:09:32.23 and kept them safe by the name You gave Me." 00:09:32.26\00:09:35.81 Who is them? 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.77 He's talking about the disciples. 00:09:37.80\00:09:39.89 Okay, so He prays for Himself, now He prays for His disciples. 00:09:39.92\00:09:45.99 In every other gospel that would be it, 00:09:46.02\00:09:49.14 but look at verse 20. 00:09:49.17\00:09:51.73 "My prayer is not for them alone." 00:09:51.76\00:09:55.75 Oh, who besides the disciples does He want to pray for? 00:09:55.78\00:09:59.65 "I pray also for those who will believe in Me 00:09:59.68\00:10:04.62 through their message." 00:10:04.65\00:10:09.17 So Jesus now prays for a second group, 00:10:09.20\00:10:12.97 not the ones that were with Him, 00:10:13.00\00:10:14.78 but those who came to believe through the disciples' message. 00:10:14.81\00:10:19.46 How did you and I come to believe? 00:10:19.49\00:10:22.72 Through the disciples' message, through these gospels, 00:10:22.75\00:10:26.30 that's how we came to believe. 00:10:26.33\00:10:28.05 We never touched Jesus. We never heard His voice. 00:10:28.08\00:10:31.88 We never were able to see Him physically. 00:10:31.91\00:10:35.77 Wouldn't you love to have Jesus at your house? 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.88 Wouldn't it be neat if every time you get into trouble, 00:10:38.91\00:10:41.57 you can go into the backroom 00:10:41.60\00:10:43.68 and you can tell your troubles to Jesus? 00:10:43.71\00:10:46.33 He can kneel down and He could pray for you 00:10:46.36\00:10:49.55 and raise up His voice to the Father in heaven. 00:10:49.58\00:10:52.65 Every time I get sick, I just need His touch. 00:10:52.68\00:10:55.04 Yeah. And I'm healed. 00:10:55.07\00:10:57.04 We somehow think we'd be better off 00:10:57.07\00:11:01.38 if Jesus were with us physically. 00:11:01.41\00:11:03.51 John is saying, "No, Jesus already knew about you." 00:11:03.54\00:11:09.48 He already prayed for you when He was here. 00:11:09.51\00:11:12.15 So the first or that first generation, 00:11:12.18\00:11:14.55 I don't know if it's the first 00:11:14.58\00:11:15.95 but that generation who saw Jesus' miracles, 00:11:15.98\00:11:20.81 do they an advantage over us or do they not? 00:11:20.84\00:11:25.48 That's the question of this gospel. 00:11:25.51\00:11:27.43 No other gospel addresses this. Paul doesn't address it. 00:11:27.46\00:11:30.57 I don't know of any other place in the Bible. 00:11:30.60\00:11:32.51 But here in the Gospel of John, 00:11:32.54\00:11:34.05 it addresses this whole question of how we had a disadvantage. 00:11:34.08\00:11:40.49 What about those people 00:11:40.52\00:11:41.89 who don't have a living disciple with them? 00:11:41.92\00:11:43.69 Can words on a page 00:11:43.72\00:11:47.47 make that much of a difference, you see? 00:11:47.50\00:11:50.30 When you go to Chapter 15, 00:11:50.33\00:11:52.95 and we won't take time to do that right now, 00:11:52.98\00:11:54.83 but in Chapter 15, Jesus tells a story. 00:11:54.86\00:11:58.51 He says, "I am the vine, you are the branches." 00:11:58.54\00:12:04.73 Who is He talking to? He is talking to His disciples. 00:12:04.76\00:12:10.62 Now you and I tend to read that story and say, 00:12:10.65\00:12:13.80 oh, He's the vine, I'm the branches, 00:12:13.83\00:12:15.89 I got to stay close to Jesus. 00:12:15.92\00:12:17.31 Follow the whole story. 00:12:17.34\00:12:21.19 He says, "I am the vine, you are the branches." 00:12:21.22\00:12:25.57 Who's He talking to? His disciples. 00:12:25.60\00:12:29.13 If you could stay connected to Me, 00:12:29.16\00:12:31.99 if you remain in Me, you will what? 00:12:32.02\00:12:36.03 Bring forth a lot of fruit. Who is the fruit? 00:12:36.06\00:12:41.63 They are the people who believed from the disciples' testimony. 00:12:41.66\00:12:46.03 The disciples believe 00:12:46.06\00:12:47.43 'cause they are connected to the physical Jesus. 00:12:47.46\00:12:50.00 We have come to believe 00:12:50.03\00:12:51.40 'cause we are connected to the disciples. 00:12:51.43\00:12:52.86 That's interesting because I always thought 00:12:52.89\00:12:54.50 that the fruit represented more like 00:12:54.53\00:12:56.36 the fruit of the sprit, joy, love, peace, patience-- 00:12:56.39\00:13:00.56 you know, and so now you're saying 00:13:00.59\00:13:03.72 that the fruit represents other disciples 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.92 that by their word they bring to Christ. 00:13:06.95\00:13:09.76 Well, in John 10:16, Jesus says, 00:13:09.79\00:13:12.50 "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold." 00:13:12.53\00:13:16.76 You know the disciples are only part of who's He ministering to. 00:13:16.79\00:13:20.00 I thought the same thing, Deyvy. 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.17 But when I came to realized 00:13:22.20\00:13:24.13 how John is focused in on the second generation, 00:13:24.16\00:13:28.02 it changed everything. 00:13:28.05\00:13:29.42 Now I suddenly realize, 00:13:29.45\00:13:30.82 yeah, He is talking to the disciples 00:13:30.85\00:13:32.38 and saying, "You stay connected to Me 00:13:32.41\00:13:34.75 and then you will be able to bear fruit." 00:13:34.78\00:13:37.64 That fruit is the second generation. 00:13:37.67\00:13:39.73 In Chapter 21, the disciples are out fishing, 00:13:39.76\00:13:43.07 Jesus directs them. And what happens? 00:13:43.10\00:13:46.72 They catch 153 fish. 00:13:46.75\00:13:49.49 See the disciples are the ones going out collecting the fish. 00:13:49.52\00:13:53.75 We are the fish. 00:13:53.78\00:13:55.24 The second generation is the fish. 00:13:55.27\00:13:58.41 They are the ones that have no direct connection with Jesus, 00:13:58.44\00:14:01.20 but it tells us Jesus is directing their conversion, 00:14:01.23\00:14:05.30 even though He is not physically present, 00:14:05.33\00:14:07.11 He is at a distance, but He can still accomplish 00:14:07.14\00:14:10.72 everything we need even at a distance. 00:14:10.75\00:14:13.47 So do you think it would be fair to say that 00:14:13.50\00:14:15.59 that generation had no advantage over let's say for example us. 00:14:15.62\00:14:20.81 I think before we're done with this particular program, 00:14:20.84\00:14:24.26 we might discover that it's an advantage 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.31 not to have Jesus physically present. 00:14:27.34\00:14:29.88 I want to know more about that. 00:14:29.91\00:14:31.28 All right. Okay. 00:14:31.31\00:14:33.06 Well, we're gonna continue picking up on the Gospel of John 00:14:33.09\00:14:36.16 with Dr. Jon Paulien after this short break. 00:14:36.19\00:14:39.83
