And we're studying the Gospel of John with Dr. Jon Paulien 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.11 And Dr. Paulien, you were telling us about-- 00:00:04.14\00:00:08.32 it is better to have four stories 00:00:08.35\00:00:09.93 than one, tell us more? 00:00:09.96\00:00:12.18 Well, the ironical thing is that 00:00:12.21\00:00:14.13 for most people it isn't four stories. 00:00:14.16\00:00:16.84 Here you have what I call the Hollywood version of Jesus, 00:00:16.87\00:00:19.45 you know, what they do to put a movie together 00:00:19.48\00:00:21.71 where you have four of these different stories, 00:00:21.74\00:00:23.25 we try to find all the things where they agree 00:00:23.28\00:00:25.36 and create one story out of it and that's great. 00:00:25.39\00:00:28.67 And that has helped a lot of people. 00:00:28.70\00:00:30.07 One of my favorite books "Desire of Ages" 00:00:30.10\00:00:32.63 basically does that. 00:00:32.66\00:00:34.05 But the reality is we're missing a lot when we only do that 00:00:34.08\00:00:38.37 because each of these stories is unique and tells a unique story. 00:00:38.40\00:00:44.13 Let me just give you an example. 00:00:44.16\00:00:47.29 There's three toothpastes that are really 00:00:47.32\00:00:50.26 basically have the same ingredients 00:00:50.29\00:00:51.92 but they have a different purpose. 00:00:51.95\00:00:53.42 One is called Colgate, 00:00:53.45\00:00:55.13 and it has maximum fluoride protection, you know. 00:00:55.16\00:00:58.49 And then there's Close Up for the romantic types, 00:00:58.52\00:01:01.96 you know, who like to get close up. 00:01:01.99\00:01:04.12 And then there's Ultrabrite for people 00:01:04.15\00:01:06.25 who are worried about their appearance 00:01:06.28\00:01:08.45 and want bright shiny teeth. 00:01:08.48\00:01:10.13 Now the question I have for you is 00:01:10.16\00:01:11.54 which of these toothpaste is the right one? 00:01:11.57\00:01:14.36 Depends on what I'm looking for I suppose, I don't know. 00:01:14.39\00:01:18.64 I would probably say the cheapest one. 00:01:18.67\00:01:20.87 Is this an advertise? No. 00:01:20.90\00:01:24.67 but the point is this that each of those toothpastes 00:01:24.70\00:01:28.37 may have an audience, a certain people will say, 00:01:28.40\00:01:31.35 oh, I like that one, you know, 00:01:31.38\00:01:32.75 I want to have bright teeth 00:01:32.78\00:01:34.15 or I want to take care of my breath 00:01:34.18\00:01:36.18 or I want to have healthy teeth, 00:01:36.21\00:01:37.58 you know, and get rid of the cavities. 00:01:37.61\00:01:39.26 So you tend to pick toothpaste, it may be the same thing 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.83 but you still pick one or the other of these 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.86 because it's something that strikes you 00:01:44.89\00:01:47.94 and the point is this there is no one right gospel. 00:01:47.97\00:01:53.53 They are all telling the story of Jesus, 00:01:53.56\00:01:55.64 each may impact different lives, 00:01:55.67\00:01:57.97 but it tells me something very important 00:01:58.00\00:02:00.77 that I think a lot of people haven't fully understood 00:02:00.80\00:02:03.53 and that is there's more than one 00:02:03.56\00:02:05.76 right way to tell the story of Jesus. 00:02:05.79\00:02:09.92 And that means there's more than one right way to think. 00:02:09.95\00:02:15.32 I think that that can be tough for people, 00:02:15.35\00:02:18.35 people sort of have the impression, 00:02:18.38\00:02:19.75 if I'm right, you must be wrong, you see. 00:02:19.78\00:02:23.87 And if I know I'm right, 00:02:23.90\00:02:26.07 then I shouldn't listen to you because you are wrong, okay. 00:02:26.10\00:02:31.12 But if it's possible that two different followers of Jesus 00:02:31.15\00:02:35.96 may both know something right about Jesus 00:02:35.99\00:02:39.11 just like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, 00:02:39.14\00:02:40.87 each knew something right about Jesus. 00:02:40.90\00:02:42.63 They told the story differently 00:02:42.66\00:02:45.56 but in telling the story differently, 00:02:45.59\00:02:47.88 it wasn't one was better than the other 00:02:47.91\00:02:50.08 or one was more right that the other. 00:02:50.11\00:02:52.05 They were all telling the story of Jesus in a correct way. 00:02:52.08\00:02:55.85 Now you can tell the story of Jesus 00:02:55.88\00:02:58.06 in a wrong way too, I'm not denying that. 00:02:58.09\00:03:00.98 But I think it's very important for me to understand 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.95 that if there's more than one right way to think, 00:03:03.98\00:03:07.15 then I need to listen to you, 00:03:07.18\00:03:09.03 I need to be willing to learn from you 00:03:09.06\00:03:10.78 because you may have a view of Jesus 00:03:10.81\00:03:13.13 that is in some aspects clearer than mine 00:03:13.16\00:03:16.41 that I need to learn from you. 00:03:16.44\00:03:18.35 And so the four gospels tell me that God is one who is willing 00:03:18.38\00:03:23.39 to come out of variety of directions to reach us. 00:03:23.42\00:03:26.79 In the Book of Revelation, you have seven churches 00:03:26.82\00:03:30.27 and each of them gets a different picture of Jesus. 00:03:30.30\00:03:34.81 People not always notice that, 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.22 there's a picture of Jesus in Chapter 1 00:03:36.25\00:03:38.03 and then these churches, 00:03:38.06\00:03:39.43 He comes differently to each church. 00:03:39.46\00:03:41.44 So He recognizes that we don't think alike. 00:03:41.47\00:03:45.14 We all come from a different background. 00:03:45.17\00:03:46.88 You come from Mexico, my parents came from Germany, 00:03:46.91\00:03:49.61 very different background 00:03:49.64\00:03:51.44 and yet we can listen to each other, 00:03:51.47\00:03:53.87 share like we're doing here, learn from each other 00:03:53.90\00:03:56.67 and that can be a wonderful thing 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.91 and the Bible of course gets to test 00:03:58.94\00:04:00.96 whether or not we've done it right. 00:04:00.99\00:04:04.85 The two extremes on the one hand 00:04:04.88\00:04:07.00 is there's only one right way to think 00:04:07.03\00:04:09.31 and that leads to a lot of religious wars 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.10 and then the other side is where every way is okay 00:04:12.13\00:04:15.55 and both of those are extreme positions. 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.79 The gospels tell us that 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.61 the gospel is the right way to think, 00:04:19.64\00:04:22.23 but there's more than one way to look at the gospel 00:04:22.26\00:04:25.32 It's like two witnesses or more than two witnesses 00:04:25.35\00:04:27.62 who experience something they've never met, 00:04:27.65\00:04:30.68 they've never seen each other, they tell their story. 00:04:30.71\00:04:33.94 You have two different point of views, 00:04:33.97\00:04:36.41 there might be two different stories 00:04:36.44\00:04:37.87 but then again it all leads 00:04:37.90\00:04:39.57 to the same experience they met, is that correct? 00:04:39.60\00:04:43.04 Yes, that's absolutely right. 00:04:43.07\00:04:44.82 And I think when you get to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, 00:04:44.85\00:04:48.79 each of them has its own perspective. 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.91 Now John is really special in this sense. 00:04:50.94\00:04:54.46 Even the ancients recognized this, 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.56 probably one of the earliest Christian writers that we have 00:04:56.59\00:05:00.06 outside of the New Testament said that, 00:05:00.09\00:05:02.69 you know, these three gospels were written 00:05:02.72\00:05:04.58 but then John chose to write a spiritual gospel. 00:05:04.61\00:05:10.62 Somehow he saw the other three gospels 00:05:10.65\00:05:13.16 not as spiritual gospels, but something else. 00:05:13.19\00:05:16.24 And what I think he meant was 00:05:16.27\00:05:17.64 these were narratives about Jesus. 00:05:17.67\00:05:19.72 The stories were told because they happened. 00:05:19.75\00:05:23.29 But John isn't just telling stories because they happened. 00:05:23.32\00:05:26.93 Yeah, Jesus went to a wedding. 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.57 Yeah, He cleansed the temple. 00:05:28.60\00:05:30.28 Yeah, He fed the 5,000. 00:05:30.31\00:05:32.12 But John is telling a spiritual story 00:05:32.15\00:05:36.83 and one of the exciting things you discover 00:05:36.86\00:05:39.48 in the Gospel of John, there's no parables in it. 00:05:39.51\00:05:43.94 Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus tells parables. 00:05:43.97\00:05:46.75 These stories, sort of made up stories 00:05:46.78\00:05:49.95 that have a powerful point. 00:05:49.98\00:05:52.42 Why are there no parables in the Gospel of John? 00:05:52.45\00:05:54.77 Because the stories themselves are the parables. 00:05:54.80\00:05:59.71 The stories themselves have spiritual impact, 00:05:59.74\00:06:03.49 so when you're reading the Gospel of John, 00:06:03.52\00:06:05.31 you don't just say, "oh, Jesus went to a wedding," 00:06:05.34\00:06:07.45 nice, I guess weddings are okay. 00:06:07.48\00:06:09.19 No, no, no, there is depth in that story 00:06:09.22\00:06:12.90 when we get to the wedding of Cana, 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.30 we'll spent the whole half hour 00:06:14.33\00:06:16.30 just exploring some of the depths in that story. 00:06:16.33\00:06:20.04 So John's gospel is different from the other three 00:06:20.07\00:06:23.14 and particularly is attempting to bring us 00:06:23.17\00:06:26.08 the powerful spiritual message. 00:06:26.11\00:06:28.79 So then it's more like 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.33 rather than narrative as you were saying. 00:06:30.36\00:06:33.25 It's an application, a spiritual application, 00:06:33.28\00:06:35.61 okay, so this is what it says, 00:06:35.64\00:06:37.08 now let me tell you what it means. Yeah. 00:06:37.11\00:06:39.22 And how that will fulfill your need, 00:06:39.25\00:06:43.94 your spiritual need. That's right. 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.75 So the Gospel of John often has been the most powerful, 00:06:45.78\00:06:48.67 most popular gospel for many people, 00:06:48.70\00:06:51.16 because it touches the heart 00:06:51.19\00:06:53.88 at a deeper level sometimes than the others. 00:06:53.91\00:06:56.35 And John, I've found, 00:06:56.38\00:06:57.96 is even deeper than the Book of Revelation. 00:06:57.99\00:07:00.30 Some of the depths in there are harder to come at 00:07:00.33\00:07:02.46 than the Book of Revelation. 00:07:02.49\00:07:03.86 We gonna be exploring some of that together. 00:07:03.89\00:07:06.10 You know, it's like a church, like let's say the presenter, 00:07:06.13\00:07:09.53 or the speaker, the preacher is he's giving his sermon, 00:07:09.56\00:07:13.12 but if there is no spiritual application to me 00:07:13.15\00:07:15.65 to say okay, this is what it means in my personal life. 00:07:15.68\00:07:19.59 This is how I should spiritually change or focus 00:07:19.62\00:07:24.63 and that's what I want rather than 00:07:24.66\00:07:26.99 okay, well, I know the facts, I've read that story before 00:07:27.02\00:07:30.07 but what does it mean to me 00:07:30.10\00:07:31.57 and how can I grow in my spiritual life. 00:07:31.60\00:07:34.12 So then John emphasizes 00:07:34.15\00:07:36.48 the spiritual aspect of the gospel. 00:07:36.51\00:07:39.50 Yeah, now let me show you 00:07:39.53\00:07:40.90 one of the ways in which this happens. 00:07:40.93\00:07:43.24 In the Gospel of John itself there are three Passovers. 00:07:43.27\00:07:47.26 You can find the first one in John 2:13 00:07:47.29\00:07:52.59 where it says, "When it was almost time 00:07:52.62\00:07:55.15 for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem." 00:07:55.18\00:07:58.26 So you have a Passover there 00:07:58.29\00:07:59.66 right at the beginning of the book. 00:07:59.69\00:08:01.27 Then John 6:4, and this is later on. 00:08:01.30\00:08:09.22 In John 6:4, it says, 00:08:09.25\00:08:11.34 "The Jewish Passover feast was near." 00:08:11.37\00:08:14.10 So this is at least a year later 00:08:14.13\00:08:16.29 because the Passover is only once every spring. 00:08:16.32\00:08:19.51 And then in John 12:1, notice what it says there. 00:08:19.54\00:08:23.88 In John 12 and Verse 1, 00:08:23.91\00:08:31.39 it says, "Six days before the Passover, 00:08:31.42\00:08:34.56 Jesus arrived to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, 00:08:34.59\00:08:38.00 whom Jesus had raised from the dead." 00:08:38.03\00:08:39.53 These are three different Passovers. 00:08:39.56\00:08:41.10 Three different Passovers, you see. 00:08:41.13\00:08:43.02 So you can divide the Gospel of John 00:08:43.05\00:08:45.83 with these three different Passovers. 00:08:45.86\00:08:49.43 So you have some sense in John 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.43 more than the other three of a passage of time. 00:08:51.46\00:08:54.32 Now here's where it gets interesting. 00:08:54.35\00:08:56.29 The first year takes 116 verses, 00:08:56.32\00:09:01.67 so from the first Passover to the second, 00:09:01.70\00:09:03.42 there's 116 verses. 00:09:03.45\00:09:05.35 Now watch this, 00:09:05.38\00:09:06.75 from the second Passover to the third, 00:09:06.78\00:09:09.53 there are 295 verses. 00:09:09.56\00:09:13.35 So what's happening here? 00:09:13.38\00:09:15.23 The narrative is slowing down. 00:09:15.26\00:09:18.34 It took 116 verses to cover the first year 00:09:18.37\00:09:21.03 but it takes 295 to cover the second year. 00:09:21.06\00:09:24.57 Then comes the death of Jesus 00:09:24.60\00:09:27.82 and that story is told in 293 verses. 00:09:27.85\00:09:31.70 What's happening here? 00:09:31.73\00:09:33.90 The narrative is slowing down. 00:09:33.93\00:09:36.81 It's getting slower and slower 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.21 until by the time he get to the cross, 00:09:38.24\00:09:40.04 it almost grinds to a halt. 00:09:40.07\00:09:42.14 What's John doing? 00:09:42.17\00:09:43.80 The cross is what this is all about. 00:09:43.83\00:09:45.93 The cross is the heart of this book. 00:09:45.96\00:09:47.76 That's the place that really makes a difference, you see. 00:09:47.79\00:09:51.65 So he's using the narrative speed going through the book 00:09:51.68\00:09:56.37 to point everything toward the cross. 00:09:56.40\00:09:59.79 And we'll find out later on 00:09:59.82\00:10:01.21 that even when we're in the beginning of the book, 00:10:01.24\00:10:02.78 we're still heading toward the cross. 00:10:02.81\00:10:06.16 Now John above all other gospels was concerned with time. 00:10:06.19\00:10:11.07 You have days mentioned. 00:10:11.10\00:10:12.75 For example, if you go to Chapter 1, 00:10:12.78\00:10:16.67 it tells the story of John the Baptist 00:10:16.70\00:10:19.14 in Verses 19 through 27 and then verse 29, it says, 00:10:19.17\00:10:25.24 "The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him." 00:10:25.27\00:10:29.32 Then in verse 35, "The next day, 00:10:29.35\00:10:31.69 John was there with two of his disciples." 00:10:31.72\00:10:33.91 In verse 43, "The next day, 00:10:33.94\00:10:36.02 Jesus decided to leave for Galilee." 00:10:36.05\00:10:38.70 And in Chapter 2:1, 00:10:38.73\00:10:40.10 "On the third day, a wedding took place." 00:10:40.13\00:10:43.25 John marks time off in the gospel, 00:10:43.28\00:10:47.71 none of the others do it quite this way. 00:10:47.74\00:10:50.26 Now if you take seriously these years in the text, 00:10:50.29\00:10:55.76 there's more than a thousand days that Jesus is ministering, 00:10:55.79\00:11:00.13 but only 29 are actually mentioned. 00:11:00.16\00:11:04.22 Only 29 days actually appear 00:11:04.25\00:11:09.17 in the Gospel of John, so what is he doing? 00:11:09.20\00:11:12.36 He's being extremely selective. 00:11:12.39\00:11:15.89 At the end of the book, he says, the very last verse, he says, 00:11:15.92\00:11:20.41 if everything about Jesus was written, 00:11:20.44\00:11:22.36 it would fill the whole world with books. Right. 00:11:22.39\00:11:24.83 So this book is selecting certain things 00:11:24.86\00:11:28.21 and in Chapter 20, I want you to look at this with me. 00:11:28.24\00:11:31.28 Why don't you read it for us, Chapter 20:30 and 31. 00:11:31.31\00:11:36.58 It says, "And truly Jesus did 00:11:36.61\00:11:38.84 many other signs in the presence of His disciples 00:11:38.87\00:11:41.50 which are not written in this book." 00:11:41.53\00:11:44.74 There's many things not written here. 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.49 So, what's written? 00:11:46.52\00:11:47.89 "But these are written that you may believe 00:11:47.92\00:11:49.58 that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of a God, 00:11:49.61\00:11:52.05 and that believing you may have life in His name." 00:11:52.08\00:11:56.00 So John has a purpose. He's being selective. 00:11:56.03\00:12:01.24 He's chosen only a few days out of Jesus ministry, 00:12:01.27\00:12:04.11 only a few miracles out of whole Jesus ministry. 00:12:04.14\00:12:07.04 He has a purpose. 00:12:07.07\00:12:09.89 The Gospel of John is being written for a purpose 00:12:09.92\00:12:12.70 and that purpose is that you and I might believe. Amen. 00:12:12.73\00:12:18.70 So as we look carefully 00:12:18.73\00:12:21.07 at how John is different from the other gospels, 00:12:21.10\00:12:23.69 we'll also discover his unique picture of Jesus 00:12:23.72\00:12:27.22 and that's the one we want to draw out 00:12:27.25\00:12:28.62 in the series of programs. 00:12:28.65\00:12:30.02 And I'm looking forward to seeing 00:12:30.05\00:12:31.60 those unique pictures of Jesus and I hope you too, friends, 00:12:31.63\00:12:34.95 have and find the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. 00:12:34.98\00:12:39.20
