One of the reasons why I enjoy 00:00:21.78\00:00:23.41 reading and studying the Bible 00:00:23.44\00:00:25.14 is because in it I find purpose in life. 00:00:25.17\00:00:27.58 It guides me, it leads me, 00:00:27.61\00:00:29.55 it is the light unto my path 00:00:29.58\00:00:31.15 and I thank God not because he found me-- 00:00:31.18\00:00:33.59 for He never lost me but I-- but because I found Him. 00:00:33.62\00:00:37.33 The Bible says that there is a way that seems right to a man, 00:00:37.36\00:00:40.11 but its end is the way of death. 00:00:40.14\00:00:42.54 In other words my opinions without any foundation of truth 00:00:42.57\00:00:45.82 will lead me to destruction, 00:00:45.85\00:00:47.82 but then there is another way and that is Jesus Christ. 00:00:47.85\00:00:51.33 He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." 00:00:51.36\00:00:54.89 God's desire for us is to follow the way to life 00:00:54.92\00:00:58.13 for there are few who find it. 00:00:58.16\00:01:00.06 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I welcome you 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.11 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:01:02.14\00:01:04.55 And I'm so glad you've decided to take this time 00:01:04.58\00:01:07.11 to join us in this Bible study. 00:01:07.14\00:01:09.29 And today we're starting a new series of Bible study 00:01:09.32\00:01:12.45 focusing on the Book of John or the Gospel of John. 00:01:12.48\00:01:16.28 And I'm so pleased to have with us 00:01:16.31\00:01:18.02 a brilliant scholar of the Bible and that is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:01:18.05\00:01:22.64 Dr. Jon Paulien, welcome. 00:01:22.67\00:01:24.62 Hello, it's good to be here 00:01:24.65\00:01:26.77 and it's good to be with you, Deyvy. 00:01:26.80\00:01:30.00 We're gonna try to do something pretty exciting here 00:01:30.03\00:01:32.58 because the reality is that Deyvy and I have only just met 00:01:32.61\00:01:37.30 and that was just before we came on the set 00:01:37.33\00:01:40.12 that we met for the first time. 00:01:40.15\00:01:42.07 And that means, well, he have some idea of the script. 00:01:42.10\00:01:46.30 I'm not quite sure 00:01:46.33\00:01:47.70 of what exactly he knows about the Gospel of John. 00:01:47.73\00:01:50.15 I'm not quite sure what questions he's gonna ask. 00:01:50.18\00:01:53.99 And I think that's gonna create some interesting-- 00:01:54.02\00:01:57.23 a little bit of jeopardy here even. 00:01:57.26\00:01:59.56 So looking forward to this 00:01:59.59\00:02:01.02 we can talk about the Gospel of John together, 00:02:01.05\00:02:02.85 but since we're just getting to know each other, 00:02:02.88\00:02:04.87 Deyvy, tell me a little bit about yourself. 00:02:04.90\00:02:06.61 Where are you from? 00:02:06.64\00:02:08.44 You know, what brought you here to 3ABN? 00:02:08.47\00:02:11.02 Yeah, well, you know, originally I am from Mexico 00:02:11.05\00:02:13.34 and I grew up in New Mexico 00:02:13.37\00:02:15.28 which is of course another state of the United States. 00:02:15.31\00:02:18.18 And I have to emphasize because-- 00:02:18.21\00:02:19.62 I have to emphasize that because some people don't know 00:02:19.65\00:02:22.30 that New Mexico is actually another state. 00:02:22.33\00:02:24.92 But the way I came to 3ABN is quite interesting. 00:02:24.95\00:02:28.85 I was at one of the GYC sessions or-- 00:02:28.88\00:02:33.13 oh not sessions or conference meetings. 00:02:33.16\00:02:35.85 In Houston, Texas that was about maybe a year ago 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.69 and I had recently comeback from a three year 00:02:38.72\00:02:41.95 missionary journey in South Korea. 00:02:41.98\00:02:44.53 I was in Seoul for three years. 00:02:44.56\00:02:46.26 I was a Bible teacher there in English 00:02:46.29\00:02:49.46 and so after the three years I came back 00:02:49.49\00:02:52.46 and somehow at GYC, 00:02:52.49\00:02:54.79 I made that connection to work at 3ABN. 00:02:54.82\00:02:59.55 Thankfully they saw in me some kind of-- 00:02:59.58\00:03:03.37 I don't know, gift I suppose, but they called me 00:03:03.40\00:03:07.74 and I thank God that I am here today. 00:03:07.77\00:03:09.32 Did you grow up speaking English? 00:03:09.35\00:03:11.28 Or were you born in-- 00:03:11.31\00:03:12.91 how long were you in Mexico and then moved to? 00:03:12.94\00:03:15.18 You know, I was in Mexico for six years, 00:03:15.21\00:03:17.79 my first six years and after that 00:03:17.82\00:03:19.70 we then moved to the United States. 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.50 So at home Spanish is spoken 00:03:21.53\00:03:24.92 and I began to pick up English at school 00:03:24.95\00:03:28.30 and I'm still learning English as I go in. 00:03:28.33\00:03:30.33 So I have to balance, you know, 00:03:30.36\00:03:31.73 make sure I don't forget my Spanish, 00:03:31.76\00:03:33.13 but my parents don't really speak English. 00:03:33.16\00:03:36.09 So when I come home I have to speak Spanish. 00:03:36.12\00:03:39.60 Well, that's interesting 00:03:39.63\00:03:41.00 because I grew up in an immigrant home too. 00:03:41.03\00:03:43.42 I was actually born in the Upper East Side of Manhattan 00:03:43.45\00:03:46.83 when it was poor. 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.23 Today it's some of the most expensive 00:03:48.26\00:03:49.63 real estate in the world. 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.82 And it was like a sixth floor walkup apartment 00:03:51.85\00:03:54.81 where I was born. 00:03:54.84\00:03:56.36 And I grew up in New York City but my parents were German 00:03:56.39\00:03:59.44 and they spoke German at home 00:03:59.47\00:04:00.84 and we went to a German speaking church. 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.44 So I grew up hearing this other language 00:04:03.47\00:04:06.64 but also learning the English from my friends and so on. 00:04:06.67\00:04:09.59 So I kind of had a similar background to you in that way. 00:04:09.62\00:04:13.52 Do you speak German now, still? 00:04:13.55\00:04:15.39 I can do pretty well. 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.10 If I go to Germany I've got to be there three, four days. 00:04:17.13\00:04:20.12 You know, the vocabulary isn't there, the complexity. 00:04:20.15\00:04:23.03 Three, four days in, I'll start searching 00:04:23.06\00:04:25.19 for English words to say what I want to say. 00:04:25.22\00:04:27.30 So I can do okay in Germany after a week or so, 00:04:27.33\00:04:31.74 but I don't use it everyday as part of the language. 00:04:31.77\00:04:34.87 Now what do you currently do now? 00:04:34.94\00:04:36.75 I know that you are a-- 00:04:36.78\00:04:38.15 you told me you were a dean because like we said-- 00:04:38.18\00:04:40.36 like you said we just met today. Yeah. 00:04:40.39\00:04:42.31 And as a matter of fact, we didn't even know what 00:04:42.34\00:04:44.83 we were going to match clothes here, we're wearing purple. 00:04:44.86\00:04:47.20 Yeah, you did a good job. 00:04:47.23\00:04:49.02 But you told me that you are dean 00:04:49.05\00:04:52.34 at the department of Religion 00:04:52.37\00:04:55.22 at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. 00:04:55.25\00:04:58.52 Tell us a little more of 00:04:58.55\00:04:59.92 what are your duties and responsibilities there? 00:04:59.95\00:05:02.31 How long you've been there? 00:05:02.34\00:05:03.71 I'm in charge of the religion faculties. 00:05:03.74\00:05:06.10 We called a school of religion 00:05:06.13\00:05:08.11 and while we have a few small programs, 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.39 most of what we do is teaching in all the other schools. 00:05:10.42\00:05:14.44 It's the only institution in all of North America 00:05:14.47\00:05:19.22 where you have religion involved in every program at every level. 00:05:19.25\00:05:24.35 We are teaching in bio-chemistry, 00:05:24.38\00:05:26.83 we're teaching religion classes. 00:05:26.86\00:05:28.41 medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, 00:05:28.44\00:05:32.44 you name it, physical therapy. 00:05:32.47\00:05:34.14 This religion interwoven because at Loma Linda 00:05:34.17\00:05:36.90 we believe that healthcare should be holistic, 00:05:36.93\00:05:41.67 that we should deal with the whole person that, 00:05:41.70\00:05:43.82 that patients want to talk about God 00:05:43.85\00:05:46.60 and have spiritual concerns and emotional concerns 00:05:46.63\00:05:50.45 and so on when they are in the hospital etcetera. 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.17 So we teach healthcare in the larger context of faith 00:05:53.20\00:05:58.81 and the sort of my job as to exactly 00:05:58.84\00:06:01.63 how that's going to work from the religion side. 00:06:01.66\00:06:05.66 So I don't teach a whole lot right now, 00:06:05.69\00:06:07.94 I more of an administrator, 00:06:07.97\00:06:09.40 but then I get to have fun like this every so often. 00:06:09.43\00:06:11.57 Okay, so every student who is graduating 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.80 will at least have gone through 00:06:13.83\00:06:15.20 some kind of religious courses. That's right. 00:06:15.23\00:06:18.39 Concerning particularly that the wholeness concept 00:06:18.42\00:06:21.58 as a Seventh-day Adventist Institution. 00:06:21.61\00:06:24.15 Loma Linda University believes that we're whole persons, 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.69 not body and soul separated. 00:06:26.72\00:06:28.66 And so your spiritual life, your emotional life, 00:06:28.69\00:06:32.05 your mental life, all that's gonna effect 00:06:32.08\00:06:34.24 whether you're healthy or sick. 00:06:34.27\00:06:36.29 You know, your body is deeply affected by how you feel, 00:06:36.32\00:06:40.07 what you think and so on by integrating all that, 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.52 we think its better healthcare and also a wonderful witness 00:06:42.55\00:06:47.51 just despite its very existence to people 00:06:47.54\00:06:49.58 who might not otherwise know of God. 00:06:49.61\00:06:51.69 When they see a physician 00:06:51.72\00:06:53.40 treating them with respect and kindness 00:06:53.43\00:06:56.33 and being willing to offer prayer if they want that. 00:06:56.36\00:06:59.14 So in a sense you are preparing missionaries? Exactly. 00:06:59.17\00:07:01.81 To go out into the field and-- Yes. 00:07:01.84\00:07:03.60 You could talk about medical missionaries. 00:07:03.63\00:07:06.20 In that they use the contacts that they have with people 00:07:06.23\00:07:10.13 to engage the whole person and not just the body. 00:07:10.16\00:07:14.30 You know, we're not just treating bodies, 00:07:14.33\00:07:15.92 we're treating people. 00:07:15.95\00:07:17.34 When we get to John 5, there's a story there 00:07:17.37\00:07:20.62 in which Jesus heals a guys body, 00:07:20.65\00:07:22.50 but doesn't heal the spiritual and emotional side. 00:07:22.53\00:07:26.74 And that creates a dynamic in the story that will-- 00:07:26.77\00:07:30.81 I think be instructive for us, 00:07:30.84\00:07:32.21 but that's for later on in the series. 00:07:32.24\00:07:34.66 Tell us a little more about Loma Linda? 00:07:34.69\00:07:37.43 I know that Loma Linda has been in the news recently a lot. 00:07:37.46\00:07:41.24 It's received a lot of positive views 00:07:41.27\00:07:44.89 on this particular university or even community. 00:07:44.92\00:07:49.62 Tell us more about Loma Linda? 00:07:49.65\00:07:51.96 Well, thank you for asking that. 00:07:51.99\00:07:53.72 It has recently been designated 00:07:53.75\00:07:56.00 one of the five blue zones in the world. 00:07:56.03\00:07:59.07 And this is a-- an enclave, 00:07:59.10\00:08:01.71 a small place where would say a few thousand people each 00:08:01.74\00:08:04.97 where the people just live longer 00:08:05.00\00:08:06.74 and are healthier than anywhere else. 00:08:06.77\00:08:08.15 That's what the blue zone is? 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.81 Lot's of 100 year olds things like that. 00:08:09.84\00:08:12.85 And national geographic did some research 00:08:12.88\00:08:15.17 and found Okinawa, I think it's--is it-- 00:08:15.20\00:08:20.98 Italy? Was it Italy? 00:08:21.01\00:08:22.52 Yeah, that's-- is it Sicily? 00:08:22.55\00:08:24.41 No, it said other one Corsica, I think has one of these. 00:08:24.44\00:08:27.70 Nicaragua has one. 00:08:27.73\00:08:30.04 Just isolated communities that live longer, 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.80 Loma Linda is different. 00:08:32.83\00:08:34.30 It's not an isolated community, 00:08:34.33\00:08:36.05 it's in the middle of greater Los Angeles. 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.44 And in that bustling urban western context 00:08:38.47\00:08:42.32 there's a community that lives 10 years longer 00:08:42.35\00:08:44.83 and it's healthier than the surrounding communities 00:08:44.86\00:08:47.39 and people are starting to notice what's going on. 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.74 And that's because for 100 years we've been following 00:08:49.77\00:08:53.20 the Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle. 00:08:53.23\00:08:55.54 And that includes things like vegetarianism, 00:08:55.57\00:08:58.63 lots of exercise, fresh air, sunshine, 00:08:58.66\00:09:01.97 all these natural remedies, proper diet, etcetera. 00:09:02.00\00:09:05.56 And so Newsweek magazine recently published. 00:09:05.59\00:09:09.17 If you want to live 10 years longer 00:09:09.20\00:09:11.12 become a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:09:11.15\00:09:12.94 Now that wasn't us saying, but they just discovered that 00:09:12.97\00:09:15.64 hey, if you take it seriously, 00:09:15.67\00:09:17.98 it can change your life in this world 00:09:18.01\00:09:20.39 not just for the life to come. Amen. 00:09:20.46\00:09:22.11 So they have-- the Seventh-day Adventist have 00:09:22.14\00:09:23.88 like a special message if you want to live longer. 00:09:23.91\00:09:26.61 But, you know, our hearts are touched right now 00:09:26.64\00:09:28.83 because we've come to realize that 00:09:28.86\00:09:30.38 one of the sickest communities in the entire country 00:09:30.41\00:09:33.59 is right next door to us, San Bernardino. 00:09:33.62\00:09:36.08 And there are people have suffered in poverty 00:09:36.11\00:09:39.40 and lack of good health care 00:09:39.43\00:09:41.04 and lack of good health habits and so on. 00:09:41.07\00:09:43.37 And so we are hoping to establish 00:09:43.40\00:09:45.83 centers of healing in San Bernardino 00:09:45.86\00:09:49.11 and see if we can share 00:09:49.14\00:09:53.07 some of the blessings that we have. Amen. 00:09:53.10\00:09:55.93 But, Dr. Paulien, I opened up the program 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.00 saying the reasons why I enjoy reading and studying the Bible. 00:09:58.03\00:10:02.21 And like I said, because in it I find a purpose, 00:10:02.24\00:10:05.22 you know, I find direction in life. 00:10:05.25\00:10:07.78 And the reason I said this is 00:10:07.81\00:10:10.29 because before I became a Christian, 00:10:10.32\00:10:13.06 and I want to say committed Christian, 00:10:13.09\00:10:16.17 I didn't read the Bible 00:10:16.20\00:10:18.39 and when I did began to read the Bible, 00:10:18.42\00:10:22.05 I decided to read it-- read Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. 00:10:22.08\00:10:26.40 And the reason why I chose Ecclesiastes and Proverbs 00:10:26.43\00:10:28.77 is because I believe that 00:10:28.80\00:10:30.17 there was not really much religion in there. 00:10:30.20\00:10:32.29 And so I thought well, you know, 00:10:32.32\00:10:33.94 I'm pretty sure that I can gain 00:10:33.97\00:10:35.68 some kind of wisdom in these wisdom books. 00:10:35.71\00:10:39.26 So I saw some many practical lessons there. 00:10:39.29\00:10:43.61 But then as I began to read more and more 00:10:43.64\00:10:46.22 then I went into more of the theological side 00:10:46.25\00:10:49.02 and who is Jesus and salvation 00:10:49.05\00:10:51.44 and that's where eventually will led me 00:10:51.47\00:10:53.66 to make that ultimate decision to follow Jesus Christ. 00:10:53.69\00:10:57.49 So my question to you is, why or what would be 00:10:57.52\00:11:02.00 your reason for studying and reading the Bible? 00:11:02.03\00:11:05.69 You're a scholar, you've written-- 00:11:05.72\00:11:08.04 you told me you've written several books 00:11:08.07\00:11:09.67 more than 20 or 25, 30 even. 00:11:09.70\00:11:12.30 Tell me what's your joy in reading 00:11:12.33\00:11:15.06 or even studying the Bible? 00:11:15.09\00:11:17.08 What I think is special about the Bible 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.20 and particularly about the four gospels 00:11:19.23\00:11:22.09 is a tremendous story. 00:11:22.12\00:11:24.96 And the story is about a God 00:11:24.99\00:11:27.41 who wants desperately to communicate with us. 00:11:27.44\00:11:30.83 And in order to communicate He's tried visions and dreams 00:11:30.86\00:11:35.93 and different ways to communicate, 00:11:35.96\00:11:38.86 but in the end God is out there 00:11:38.89\00:11:41.24 no one has seen Him or touched Him. 00:11:41.27\00:11:43.75 And so it's very hard for human beings 00:11:43.78\00:11:45.62 to really understand what God is like. 00:11:45.65\00:11:47.94 And so God made a decision, 00:11:47.97\00:11:50.18 I'm going to come down Myself and become human. 00:11:50.21\00:11:56.02 And I'm gonna walk among them, 00:11:56.05\00:11:58.28 live among them and show them what God is like. 00:11:58.31\00:12:04.02 And so the story, the big narrative, 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.97 the big narrative of the Bible is that God loves us so much 00:12:07.00\00:12:11.28 that He was willing to come down and live among us, 00:12:11.31\00:12:14.50 become one of us so that we could see 00:12:14.53\00:12:16.96 in engaging with somebody, 00:12:16.99\00:12:18.55 human being of flesh like ourselves 00:12:18.58\00:12:21.30 that we would understand better what God is like. 00:12:21.33\00:12:24.65 I mean, God spoke through the thunders of Sinai. 00:12:24.68\00:12:27.45 He spoke through the prophets. 00:12:27.48\00:12:29.24 He spoke through all kinds of different events 00:12:29.27\00:12:32.69 in the course of history, 00:12:32.72\00:12:34.11 but to have God in person was special. 00:12:34.14\00:12:36.65 And the four gospels are accounting 00:12:36.68\00:12:40.16 the story of when God came down. 00:12:40.19\00:12:43.52 So that plan of salvation 00:12:43.55\00:12:45.04 we can find it in the Bible? That's right. 00:12:45.07\00:12:47.54 And in the four gospels particularly 00:12:47.57\00:12:50.03 is perhaps the clearest place where this narrative of the God 00:12:50.06\00:12:54.32 who comes down has made real to us. 00:12:54.35\00:12:58.17 Now in this series we're studying the Gospel of John. 00:12:58.20\00:13:02.50 We have the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John. 00:13:02.53\00:13:06.97 I've heard it say that there's really is only one gospel. 00:13:07.00\00:13:10.36 Why another gospel? 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.13 Why couldn't we just do with Matthew, Mark, and Luke? 00:13:12.16\00:13:14.95 Why did-- whoever wrote-- 00:13:14.98\00:13:17.29 and we're gonna talk about this later 00:13:17.32\00:13:19.04 but the author why did he had to come up with another gospel? 00:13:19.07\00:13:23.61 Why are there four-- yeah. 00:13:23.64\00:13:25.01 In other words, what's the difference 00:13:25.04\00:13:26.41 between the Gospel of John than the other three gospels? 00:13:26.44\00:13:30.03 Well, I think the bottom line is this 00:13:30.06\00:13:32.70 that there are four gospels in the Bible 00:13:32.73\00:13:35.17 because God knew there are lot of different kinds of people 00:13:35.20\00:13:38.50 that different stories attract different people. 00:13:38.53\00:13:42.56 And so by having four gospels there are at least 00:13:42.59\00:13:45.66 four different ways you can come to the story of Jesus 00:13:45.69\00:13:49.07 and understand it for yourself. 00:13:49.10\00:13:51.02 And so having four turns out to be better than one. 00:13:51.05\00:13:55.10 Some people might like Matthew the best 00:13:55.13\00:13:56.82 and other might like Luke or John the best, 00:13:56.85\00:13:59.41 but having the four gives us more windows 00:13:59.44\00:14:02.56 into what God is like. 00:14:02.59\00:14:04.78 Now these four gospels do not or do they contradict each other? 00:14:04.81\00:14:10.17 Well, they do not contradict each other 00:14:10.20\00:14:12.54 in the sense that each of them 00:14:12.57\00:14:13.98 is telling the story from a particular perspective. 00:14:14.01\00:14:16.61 Just like if you have an auto accident 00:14:16.64\00:14:18.44 and you have four witnesses 00:14:18.47\00:14:20.13 they may each have a different perspective 00:14:20.16\00:14:22.17 where they're all seeing a part of the story together 00:14:22.20\00:14:26.20 you have an even stronger window into the story. 00:14:26.23\00:14:29.39 So where the gospels don't seem to say the same thing, 00:14:29.42\00:14:32.85 it's like four different testimonies to that one story. 00:14:32.88\00:14:36.43 Okay, well, we're gonna continue 00:14:36.46\00:14:38.77 and picking up on this Gospel of John 00:14:38.80\00:14:41.67 after we return from this short break. 00:14:41.70\00:14:44.17
