Hello! I'm just making a birthday card for one of my 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.35 friends. Do you like making your very own cards? 00:00:04.38\00:00:07.54 It's fun! You just need scissors and glue and markers and 00:00:07.57\00:00:11.55 colored paper. I'll tell you what, I'll show you how to make 00:00:11.58\00:00:15.05 one in just a minute ok? 00:00:15.08\00:00:16.40 For these kind of cards you really only need to have 00:01:03.56\00:01:07.17 colored paper and scissors and the first thing to do is 00:01:07.20\00:01:10.08 choose a color of paper. Now I think I will use light pink 00:01:10.11\00:01:12.91 and purple, do you think that they will look ok together? 00:01:12.94\00:01:15.05 I think so, so make a nice fold going this was, 00:01:15.08\00:01:18.53 rub your fingers good on the fold and then make a good nice 00:01:18.56\00:01:24.04 tight fold going this way, again rub your fingers, now this one 00:01:24.07\00:01:27.58 is a little bit harder because you have to line up this long 00:01:27.61\00:01:29.96 side with the shorter side and make it into a V shape. 00:01:29.99\00:01:33.63 See how that's the shape of a V, and then if you have 00:01:33.66\00:01:38.12 scissors that are nice and sharp do it again, 00:01:38.15\00:01:41.24 because the more folds you have the more designs you will be 00:01:41.27\00:01:44.84 able to get in the end, ok, and then you start cutting. 00:01:44.87\00:01:48.50 And you can make little triangle cuts and you can make little 00:01:48.53\00:01:53.91 curvy cuts, and over on this side you could make bunch 00:01:53.94\00:02:00.47 of little zig zaggy kind of cuts, really you can make 00:02:00.50\00:02:03.41 any kind of cuts that you want because anything that you make 00:02:03.44\00:02:07.77 will end up having a really pretty design in the end 00:02:07.80\00:02:10.21 once you open it up like those other ones, and remember 00:02:10.24\00:02:13.66 when you are making cards you don't just have to wait until 00:02:13.69\00:02:16.85 someone's birthday or something, you can make a card for 00:02:16.88\00:02:20.46 somebody any time you want. 00:02:20.49\00:02:21.98 It can be just a card to tell them that you love them 00:02:22.01\00:02:25.29 and that they are your good friend, or it can be a 00:02:25.32\00:02:28.14 thank you card, I think I will make this a get well card, 00:02:28.17\00:02:31.19 and it will be for my friend grandma G, she hasn't been 00:02:31.22\00:02:34.23 feeling very well, there! 00:02:34.26\00:02:36.76 Then when you have your design made, open it up 00:02:36.79\00:02:40.19 isn't that pretty, all the little designs, just brush your 00:02:40.22\00:02:44.41 paper aside and then it's time to glue it down to your 00:02:44.44\00:02:48.28 other color, it's nice to use two different colors so they 00:02:48.31\00:02:51.61 could contrast. 00:02:51.64\00:02:54.61 I like using a glue stick because it is less messy 00:02:54.64\00:02:57.41 and it's a little bit easier to use than some of the other 00:02:57.44\00:03:00.72 kinds of glue, but you can use whatever kind of glue that 00:03:00.75\00:03:03.12 you have or even scotch tape will work if you don't 00:03:03.15\00:03:05.53 have glue. 00:03:05.56\00:03:06.53 Remember the idea is that it's just fun to make it and 00:03:06.54\00:03:10.64 give it to people because then you can make other people happy, 00:03:10.67\00:03:13.32 then you turn it over and flatten it down centered 00:03:13.35\00:03:20.12 on the paper and then flatten it down, isn't that nice? 00:03:20.15\00:03:23.62 and then fold it over like this real carefully, 00:03:23.65\00:03:28.79 and then make a nice firm crease and then it's nice 00:03:28.82\00:03:33.09 to write a message on the inside of it. 00:03:33.12\00:03:35.46 You know I think that I would like to write her favorite 00:03:35.49\00:03:39.32 Bible verse into this one, and one of her favorite 00:03:39.35\00:03:42.47 Bible verses is in I Thessalonians 5:18 00:03:42.50\00:03:47.03 and it says: "In everything give thanks because that's God's will 00:03:47.06\00:03:52.36 for you." In everything give thanks because that's God's 00:03:52.39\00:04:09.45 will... It's important to give thanks, it's important to have 00:04:09.48\00:04:14.19 a happy attitude, did you know that by having a happy cheerful 00:04:14.22\00:04:17.19 attitude you make other people happy? 00:04:17.22\00:04:19.14 Did you know that when you have Jesus' love in your heart 00:04:19.17\00:04:22.43 it can't help but shine right out on your face. 00:04:22.46\00:04:25.38 Hey! There's my bell basket I better go see what's there. 00:04:55.29\00:04:58.72 Oh! It's mailman Kenny, ok, can you come up 00:04:58.75\00:05:05.34 so I can sign it? Yeah! Everybody likes them. 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.94 - I think this is what this is so I'm happy to get it. 00:06:23.97\00:06:26.98 Do you think any of the kids watching are to young to 00:06:27.01\00:06:31.53 send a letter through the mail? Can anyone do it? 00:06:31.56\00:06:34.23 - Any one can sometimes you have the groups come through 00:06:34.26\00:06:37.14 the post office and they take a tour and show them how to 00:06:37.17\00:06:39.80 address a letter and how to put a stamp on it, 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.65 even sometimes they will put their name and address on there 00:06:42.68\00:06:45.53 and mail it to themselves. - Mail a letter to themselves! 00:06:45.56\00:06:48.19 - Right! - That would be kind of fun. 00:06:48.22\00:06:49.19 - They get it the next day. - That would be really fun! 00:06:49.52\00:06:51.57 - Right! So the important thing is just to get the address put 00:06:51.60\00:06:54.06 in the right place and the stamp up in the right place. 00:06:54.09\00:06:56.61 - Right! - Well that's great! 00:06:56.64\00:06:58.75 - What's your favorite part of being a mailman? 00:06:58.78\00:07:00.91 - Well I think most of the time being friends with the people 00:07:00.94\00:07:05.44 you deliver the mail to, you kind of get to be part of their 00:07:05.47\00:07:07.59 family. - How long have you been 00:07:07.62\00:07:10.24 doing it? - Almost 29 years. 00:07:10.27\00:07:12.49 - Twenty nine years, so I bet you've made some good friends 00:07:12.52\00:07:15.74 over the years. - Right! Want to move you arm back 00:14:10.34\00:14:15.53 a little bit? That's perfect! 00:14:15.56\00:14:16.71 - Then when it gets hard that's what holds the bones 00:14:16.74\00:14:20.11 in place right? - That's what holds the bones 00:14:20.14\00:14:21.52 together. Nice and straight! 00:14:21.55\00:14:24.29 Well Becky even though this is a nice and hard waterproof 00:14:24.32\00:14:31.46 type of covering, you are going to need to try to keep from 00:14:31.49\00:14:35.05 getting wet, ok, because the inside of this cast is still 00:14:35.08\00:14:39.37 soft and can get wet quite a bit and then get really sticky 00:14:39.40\00:14:44.10 and uncomfortable when it gets wet, now we're going to need to 00:14:44.13\00:14:47.23 let this dry a little bit more so you just hold your arm still 00:14:47.26\00:14:51.35 like that, while we let that harden up some more. 00:14:51.38\00:14:54.92 Ok! - Well thank you Dr. Lowe! 00:14:54.95\00:14:59.10 Well you know sometimes kids are frightened to come to a 00:14:59.13\00:15:04.10 doctor's office and they might think that getting a cast 00:15:04.13\00:15:06.60 would be scary, and I'm wondering Becky, 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.01 can you tell the kids what it was like to get the cast on, 00:15:09.04\00:15:11.76 was it scary for you? 00:15:11.79\00:15:12.85 Not at all, did it hurt? - No! 00:15:12.88\00:15:18.30 - No! Well that's good news to hear isn't it, 00:15:18.33\00:15:20.53 that it doesn't hurt. 00:15:20.56\00:15:21.55 What did the doctor say you couldn't do when you 00:15:21.58\00:15:24.00 got this cast on? - Go swimming! 00:15:24.03\00:15:26.31 - Go swimming! Boy we all like swimming don't we! 00:15:26.34\00:15:30.17 That will be sad to miss out on swimming won't it Becky? 00:15:30.20\00:15:34.10 But you know what I think will be fun for Becky, 00:15:34.13\00:15:37.46 she can practice being cheerful even though she has a cast on 00:15:37.49\00:15:41.37 she can be cheerful and try to have a happy attitude 00:15:41.40\00:15:44.25 about it. I think I would like to sign my name on her cast, 00:15:44.28\00:15:47.00 would you like to watch? 00:15:47.03\00:15:48.28 May I do it Becky? Can I sign my name? 00:15:48.31\00:15:50.19 First signature on your cast! - Yeah! 00:15:50.22\00:15:52.21 - Ok! Here goes! J- Oh I'm making it so big 00:15:52.24\00:15:57.29 aren't I? J- A-N-I-C-E- 00:15:57.32\00:16:02.05 There's my name! There all done! 00:16:02.08\00:16:05.31 - Well, it's time to get your cast off now Becky! 00:16:05.34\00:16:09.73 - Well how are you going to do that Dr. Lowe? 00:16:09.76\00:16:12.55 - Well we are going to use a machine called a cast cutter. 00:16:12.58\00:16:15.73 - Ohhh! - And it looks rather scary 00:16:15.76\00:16:18.37 and sounds very scary, but it's very safe. 00:16:18.40\00:16:22.24 - Oh good! - There you go! 00:16:22.27\00:16:25.50 Becky we are just about ready to finish cutting the soft 00:16:47.11\00:16:50.53 inside and let you out and be free you've been a really 00:16:50.56\00:16:54.67 good patient and holding nice and still even though it was 00:16:54.70\00:16:57.51 so scary sounding. - Well thank you Dr. Lowe 00:16:57.54\00:17:02.12 Becky and I have both really learned a lot and I know that 00:17:02.15\00:17:04.52 my friends at home have too, thank you. 00:17:04.55\00:17:06.41 - You're welcome! 00:17:06.44\00:17:07.43 Oops! That's better! 00:17:07.46\00:17:13.10 Did you know that one of the best ways to become a 00:17:13.13\00:17:17.53 good friend of Jesus is by spending personal time with Him 00:17:17.56\00:17:20.50 every day? Well adults do that by praying 00:17:20.53\00:17:23.66 and by reading their Bibles, but if you can't read 00:17:23.69\00:17:27.07 it's kind of hard isn't it? Or maybe you just like 00:17:27.10\00:17:30.16 listening to tapes, well here is a fun way to have your 00:17:30.19\00:17:33.20 very own devotions every morning when you get up. 00:17:33.23\00:17:35.97 Janice has made these Morning- Time Devotions for her kids 00:17:36.00\00:17:39.46 and for you complete with: 00:17:39.49\00:17:43.14 for more information have your parents write to: 00:17:43.17\00:17:46.50 You know I was just sitting here looking at this card 00:18:13.57\00:18:17.08 that I got today, it says Have a Happy Day! 00:18:17.11\00:18:20.47 It sure brightened my day to get that card, 00:18:20.50\00:18:23.15 Jesus likes it when we do things to brighten one another's day. 00:18:23.18\00:18:26.96 We've had a busy day haven't we, going to see my friend 00:18:26.99\00:18:30.87 Dr. Lowe and my friend Thad and learning all that we've 00:18:30.90\00:18:34.64 learned about how we want to be thankful and contented in 00:18:34.67\00:18:37.93 everything that happens to us. 00:18:37.96\00:18:39.56 You know, I have a story about that, and I was just thinking 00:18:39.59\00:18:43.80 this is such a cozy evening up here in the attic, 00:18:43.83\00:18:46.66 would you like to get a pillow and just sit down and listen 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.89 to the story? I'd like it if you would! 00:18:49.92\00:18:52.84 Are you ready? 00:18:52.87\00:18:53.85 Let's see! 00:18:53.88\00:18:56.00 It was recess at the little village school, 00:18:56.03\00:19:00.77 and all the pupils were outside in the bright sunshine playing, 00:19:00.80\00:19:05.13 that is except Mary Gray. Mary was sitting at her desk 00:19:05.16\00:19:10.10 carefully working on a difficult math problem, 00:19:10.13\00:19:12.77 after awhile Miss Martin kindly said Mary you weren't 00:19:12.80\00:19:17.20 here yesterday, were you sick? I wasn't sick said Mary, 00:19:17.23\00:19:21.37 but I stayed home and sister Nellie came to school. 00:19:21.40\00:19:24.32 Well said Miss Martin, I didn't know Nellie Gray was your 00:19:24.35\00:19:28.34 sister, yesterday was her first day here 00:19:28.80\00:19:31.00 but why didn't you come? Mary looked sad and almost 00:19:31.03\00:19:35.34 embarrassed as she said, it wasn't because I didn't want to 00:19:35.37\00:19:39.17 but you see mother can't spare both of us conveniently, 00:19:39.20\00:19:42.98 and so we're taking turns coming to school. 00:19:43.01\00:19:45.66 I see said Miss Martin as she patted Mary on the shoulder. 00:19:45.69\00:19:49.39 Well you better run outside Mary and get some fresh air, 00:19:49.42\00:19:52.62 you've studied so hard today. Oh, said Mary I think I will 00:19:52.65\00:19:57.98 stay inside and watch the others from the window 00:19:58.01\00:20:00.53 I might tear my dress if I go outside. 00:20:00.56\00:20:03.49 It was then that Miss Martin realized that Mary had worn 00:20:03.52\00:20:08.02 the same dress every day for two weeks, it was just a simple 00:20:08.05\00:20:13.05 cotton one, it wasn't fancy or expensive, but it was carefully 00:20:13.08\00:20:17.71 made, what a thoughtful little girl she said to herself. 00:20:17.74\00:20:22.26 She doesn't want to make any trouble for her mother 00:20:22.29\00:20:25.03 and that's why she's being so careful with her dress. 00:20:25.06\00:20:28.79 I wish there were more contented children like her. 00:20:28.82\00:20:32.45 The next morning Mary was absent but sure enough her 00:20:32.48\00:20:36.82 sister Nellie sat in her desk and Nellie stayed indoors 00:20:36.85\00:20:40.12 during recess just like Mary did. 00:20:40.15\00:20:42.37 When Miss Martin gently suggested to Nellie that some 00:20:42.40\00:20:45.74 fresh air would be good for her, she received the 00:20:45.77\00:20:48.48 same answer that Mary had given. I might tear my dress. 00:20:48.51\00:20:53.26 That made Miss Martin look at Nellie's dress and right away 00:20:53.29\00:20:58.70 she saw that it looked just like Mary's dress, it had the same 00:20:58.73\00:21:03.28 pretty pink flowers on it. But she noticed that Nellie's 00:21:03.31\00:21:07.50 dress fit as well as Mary's, why Nellie's was to long. 00:21:07.53\00:21:11.62 Suddenly it occurred to her that maybe it was the 00:21:11.65\00:21:16.66 very same dress, imagine that she thought to herself, 00:21:16.69\00:21:23.04 they are so poor that they have to share a dress, 00:21:23.07\00:21:26.68 and yet I have never heard either of them complain. 00:21:26.71\00:21:30.57 They always act so contented and thankful just to be able 00:21:30.60\00:21:36.18 to come to school. In those days school teachers didn't 00:21:36.21\00:21:40.73 get paid very much and Miss Martin really needed 00:21:40.76\00:21:44.21 a new pair of gloves, but as she thought about those two 00:21:44.24\00:21:48.07 girls sharing one dress, she decided to try to mend her 00:21:48.10\00:21:52.46 old gloves and buy some material for another dress for the girls. 00:21:52.49\00:21:56.61 She hurried to the only store in the village and bought some 00:21:56.64\00:22:00.35 cotton exactly like their shared dress, then she asked 00:22:00.38\00:22:05.10 the store keeper to deliver it to their home 00:22:05.13\00:22:07.75 without telling them who it was from. 00:22:07.78\00:22:10.55 Friday morning Mary bounced into school a little early 00:22:10.58\00:22:16.00 she placed her books in her desk and then hurried up to 00:22:16.03\00:22:19.65 Miss Martin's desk and excitedly whispered in her ear, 00:22:19.68\00:22:23.19 Next week Nellie is coming to school with me and I'm so glad. 00:22:23.22\00:22:28.71 Well that's good news replied the teacher kindly, 00:22:28.74\00:22:32.26 something happened that mother didn't expect and now we are 00:22:32.29\00:22:36.34 all so glad that we both can come said Mary. 00:22:36.37\00:22:39.40 She hesitated for a minute but then she was so happy that 00:22:39.43\00:22:43.49 she decided to tell the teacher this little story. 00:22:43.52\00:22:46.41 Their mother was a very poor sickly widow and all winter 00:22:46.44\00:22:51.63 they had to stay out of school because they had no suitable 00:22:51.66\00:22:55.01 clothes to wear, but they had saved their pennies from doing 00:22:55.04\00:22:58.67 chores for the neighbors, and they were hoping to buy 00:22:58.70\00:23:01.89 each of them a new dress in the spring so they could come 00:23:01.92\00:23:04.65 to school. Finally they earned enough money to get a dress 00:23:04.68\00:23:09.46 for Mary and then when they had nearly earned enough money 00:23:09.49\00:23:13.25 to get a dress for Nellie, she got sick and the money that 00:23:13.28\00:23:18.80 was meant for Nellie's dress had to be used to buy medicine. 00:23:18.83\00:23:23.77 Oh said Mary, I felt so bad that I told mother I wouldn't 00:23:23.80\00:23:30.58 even go to school unless Nellie could come too. 00:23:30.61\00:23:34.58 But mother said that I had to because then I could teach 00:23:34.61\00:23:37.60 Nellie what I learned and that would be better than neither 00:23:37.63\00:23:39.90 of us going to school. Finally after two weeks I thought of 00:23:39.93\00:23:45.23 a way that we both could go. I told mother that I would 00:23:45.26\00:23:48.91 come one day and the next day I'd lend my dress to Nellie 00:23:48.94\00:23:52.62 and then she could come. So this week we took turns coming 00:23:52.65\00:23:56.46 and we're both so happy, but do you know what happened, 00:23:56.49\00:24:00.34 and at this Mary's little face just glowed as she continued, 00:24:00.37\00:24:05.34 last night the storekeeper dropped off a package of 00:24:05.37\00:24:08.46 material at our house, and now mother can make a dress 00:24:08.49\00:24:12.15 for Nellie, and we're all so happy. If only I knew who it was 00:24:12.18\00:24:16.83 that sent the material, I'd thank them for it, but I don't 00:24:16.86\00:24:21.34 and so I've done all I can. We got on our knees and we 00:24:21.37\00:24:25.06 thanked Jesus for it, and oh Miss Martin 00:24:25.09\00:24:28.71 we're all so glad now. 00:24:28.74\00:24:31.08 The following Monday little Nellie and the new pink dress 00:24:31.11\00:24:36.17 entered the school room with her sister Mary, her face was 00:24:36.20\00:24:40.95 beaming like sunshine, and she exclaimed, "I'm coming to school 00:24:40.98\00:24:45.60 everyday and oh I'm so glad!" The teacher was happy too, 00:24:45.63\00:24:51.06 and do you know every day when she put on her mended gloves 00:24:51.09\00:24:56.38 she though about the two little girls who cheerfully shared 00:24:56.41\00:25:01.44 one dress, and then she felt thankful to be able to help 00:25:01.47\00:25:06.66 Nellie and Mary both come to school in their 00:25:06.69\00:25:11.46 simple cotton dresses. And you know that's how 00:25:11.49\00:25:17.90 Jesus wants us all to be, is happy and cheerful with 00:25:17.93\00:25:22.25 everything that happens to us, and that's a fun way to be 00:25:22.28\00:25:25.63 because when we have Jesus love in our hearts, His love 00:25:25.66\00:25:28.83 just shines out on our face, and I love seeing His love 00:25:28.86\00:25:32.91 shine on your face. I better go now, 00:25:32.94\00:25:36.31 keep shining for Jesus. Bye! Bye! 00:25:36.34\00:25:37.31
