Over the past sixty years there's been a massive decline 00:00:08.67\00:00:11.07 in foreign missions. 00:00:11.11\00:00:12.44 I'm sharing the gospel through church planting. 00:00:15.44\00:00:17.95 In the 1930's if somebody gave $10.00 in tithe, 00:00:19.11\00:00:21.95 they'd give an additional $6.00 in foreign missions; 00:00:21.98\00:00:24.52 today just 28 cents. 00:00:24.55\00:00:27.12 We're doing the best we can with what we have, 00:00:27.36\00:00:29.69 but I'm still not satisfied. 00:00:29.72\00:00:31.56 God's crazy in love with the Thai people, and I sense His 00:00:35.90\00:00:39.20 spirit hovering over the city. 00:00:39.23\00:00:40.97 I've come to Bangkok, Thailand to discover the truth 00:00:41.00\00:00:43.74 about foreign missions. 00:00:43.77\00:00:45.11 Come with me as I follow my good friend, Pastor Doug Venn, 00:00:45.14\00:00:48.21 and his everyday life as a frontline missionary. 00:00:48.24\00:00:50.55 I prayed for God's biggest dream, 00:00:50.58\00:00:52.75 and He gave me this city of twelve million. 00:00:52.78\00:00:55.35 Welcome to my world. 00:00:56.35\00:00:58.85 Today we're heading downtown to go to the hospital. 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.90 Nicole and Andrew are student missionaries on Doug's team. 00:01:13.94\00:01:17.17 And the fastest way to get there is by river taxi. Yep, a boat. 00:01:17.21\00:01:24.01 Don't worry, nobody's sick. 00:01:24.05\00:01:26.38 We're going because the Thailand Adventist Mission is teaming up 00:01:26.41\00:01:29.45 with the Bangkok Adventist Hospital to put on a large 00:01:29.48\00:01:32.42 Health Expo in downtown Bangkok in just a few weeks. 00:01:32.45\00:01:35.62 Bangkok is built on a swamp and is sinking on a rate of 00:01:35.66\00:01:39.53 about two inches every year. 00:01:39.56\00:01:41.23 These canals were designed for drainage, defense, 00:01:41.26\00:01:44.47 and transportation. 00:01:44.50\00:01:45.83 There were so many canals at one time that Bangkok was known 00:01:45.87\00:01:49.80 as the Venice of the East. 00:01:49.84\00:01:51.17 They were much more popular back before all the blacktop 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.91 roads were put in, and they're still faster to some 00:01:53.94\00:01:56.14 parts of the city today. 00:01:56.18\00:01:57.51 I first rode a river taxi in 1969 with my parents, 00:01:57.55\00:02:02.28 who were returning missionaries from New Guinea. 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.39 I was five at the time, but I still remember the kids 00:02:04.42\00:02:07.52 swimming, laughing, and waving at us. 00:02:07.56\00:02:09.96 Back in '69 there were 3 million people living in Bangkok, 00:02:09.99\00:02:13.96 but today there's around four times that many. 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.90 And yet now there are fewer resources, 00:02:16.93\00:02:19.17 and fewer missionaries to reach all those extra people. 00:02:19.20\00:02:22.27 How in the world can we accomplish this task? 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.01 Pastor Doug thinks that the key may be through the Thai's rising 00:02:26.04\00:02:29.98 interest in healthy living. 00:02:30.01\00:02:31.68 Along with the newfound prosperity comes new health 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.99 problems like Diabetes and heart disease, which could be the open 00:02:39.02\00:02:42.76 door God uses to show His love to the precious Thai people. 00:02:42.79\00:02:46.03 Would you like to buy a pineapple? special price. 00:02:46.06\00:02:48.76 We're on our way to the hospital now to plan this upcoming Health 00:02:56.30\00:03:01.64 Expo, so we have to walk through this clothing market. 00:03:01.68\00:03:06.51 Now we're going through the fruit market, so you've got to 00:03:06.55\00:03:09.62 watch out here because it's kind of a place; 00:03:09.65\00:03:13.49 we'll call it a foreigner trap. 00:03:13.52\00:03:15.02 These are good! 00:03:19.46\00:03:20.80 Mangos are incredible here. 00:04:04.04\00:04:06.64 And you can see actually every variety here. 00:04:06.68\00:04:09.14 This is a mango shop and every variety here is delicious. 00:04:09.18\00:04:13.35 I don't know what they're called, but my wife and my 00:04:13.38\00:04:16.55 family they love these kinds. 00:04:16.58\00:04:18.22 Not only has Bangkok's population increased 00:04:26.39\00:04:28.83 dramatically, but the population of the whole world has nearly 00:04:28.86\00:04:31.73 doubled since my parents came home in 1969. 00:04:31.77\00:04:34.60 But while the world's population increases, we are seeing a rapid 00:04:34.64\00:04:37.84 decrease in the number of long term missionaries 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.34 and foreign mission giving. 00:04:40.38\00:04:41.71 And people that live over here feel the effect, 00:04:41.74\00:04:44.75 and the lack every day. 00:04:44.78\00:04:46.58 But they've also found the secret of true joy, 00:04:46.61\00:04:49.45 which is service, and giving of yourself 00:04:49.48\00:04:51.95 so that others may live. 00:04:51.99\00:04:53.79 Welcome to the hospital. 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.09 It's an island in the city, and like Nicole said, it's a jungle. 00:04:59.13\00:05:03.20 Bangkok Adventist Hospital was founded back in 1937, 00:05:03.23\00:05:06.74 and now has 200 beds and a full-time school of nursing. 00:05:06.77\00:05:10.37 Nicole is a graphic designer, and she's drawn up some really 00:05:10.41\00:05:14.38 great design ideas for the hospital 00:05:14.41\00:05:16.34 marketing team to look over. 00:05:16.38\00:05:17.91 We're here at the Marketing Department of the 00:05:17.95\00:05:20.62 Bangkok Adventist Hospital. 00:05:20.65\00:05:22.18 And we're here for a meeting with some ladies, 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.99 but as you can tell, they're not here. We're late. 00:05:25.02\00:05:29.42 That's not a lady. Yeah, I know. 00:05:29.46\00:05:31.09 So she's asked me today to help translate 00:05:35.63\00:05:38.47 for you as the designer. 00:05:38.50\00:05:39.83 Oh, great! 00:05:39.87\00:05:41.20 Yeah, Oh great is right. Yeah, Oh great. 00:05:41.24\00:05:43.87 This will be fun. 00:05:43.91\00:05:45.24 This is the kind of the idea. 00:05:45.27\00:05:47.48 Okay, so, alright. She's giving me... This is... 00:05:55.92\00:05:58.49 Trying to get her to speak English. 00:05:58.52\00:05:59.85 Right. This is what the Thai's call... 00:05:59.89\00:06:01.49 She's kind of, she's being modest with her ability. 00:06:02.19\00:06:06.03 Right? What they're asking for some support with is what is 00:06:06.70\00:06:11.87 going to be on those panels. 00:06:11.90\00:06:13.97 Okay, these are just rough sketches of ideas you could try. 00:06:14.00\00:06:19.11 So this one is using street signs maybe, and you could point 00:06:19.14\00:06:23.24 that with arrows where it's healthy living. 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.78 And then another one is using maybe science, and like the 00:06:25.81\00:06:30.39 ...elements, so discover your elemental health here. 00:06:30.42\00:06:35.12 Do you understand? Yeah. 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.62 Okay, just making sure. 00:06:36.66\00:06:38.36 Okay, just so you know; talk too fast. 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.10 Slowly. Very slowly. 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.73 Okay, and, Oh, and this one we're trying travel as a theme. 00:06:44.77\00:06:51.01 We have your ticket to a healthier future. 00:06:51.04\00:06:53.58 I was thinking maybe sort of a globe, and each booth is like 00:06:53.61\00:06:59.28 a different destination. 00:06:59.31\00:07:00.95 So people can maybe get stamps in their passport, like a check. 00:07:00.98\00:07:05.99 This one is sort of just basic colors, so we're trying health 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.66 is colorful; color your life. 00:07:09.69\00:07:11.93 So each letter, New Start, would be a different color. 00:07:11.96\00:07:16.10 And then you could try that. 00:07:16.13\00:07:17.70 That's a very simple one. 00:07:17.73\00:07:19.20 Yeah, very simple. Yeah! 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.60 Thai's love to have fun. 00:07:20.64\00:07:21.97 And so if you have, you know, if you choose that as a theme, 00:07:22.00\00:07:27.24 then that way we are helping to play, 00:07:27.28\00:07:30.15 so that way it's interactive. 00:07:30.18\00:07:32.41 I think you landed on a winner. They liked it. 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.56 That's good. 00:07:47.60\00:07:48.93 Behind that door over there is an American frontline 00:07:54.07\00:07:57.57 missionary, and the only physician that I that I know of 00:07:57.61\00:08:01.04 who's passed his Thai boards, and he prays with his patients, 00:08:01.08\00:08:06.92 and he's making a soul winning difference here in the city. 00:08:06.95\00:08:10.85 And where are they who spread Your love to the 00:08:10.89\00:08:19.59 lonely ones everywhere? 00:08:19.63\00:08:26.97 And where are they who will give their lives to search 00:08:27.00\00:08:36.58 for the sheep that are lost? 00:08:36.61\00:08:43.08 Today we're heading to the MBK shopping center. 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.00 And instead of going by boat, Pastor Doug has chosen to go by 00:08:58.03\00:09:01.07 motorbike taxi and then the sky train. 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.61 As of 2008 more than half the people in the world live in 00:09:05.34\00:09:09.11 cities, and so we must go and spend time in the cities 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.11 in order to reach them. 00:09:12.15\00:09:13.48 Yeah, the cities aren't the easiest places to feel 00:09:13.52\00:09:16.05 spiritual, but God is here. 00:09:16.08\00:09:18.29 He's moving in people's lives, and many are developing a hunger 00:09:18.32\00:09:22.16 for something they don't know how to fill. 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.43 And I've come to believe that the most effective way to 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.90 witness for Christ is to just live around people that have 00:09:26.93\00:09:30.07 never met a Christian before. 00:09:30.10\00:09:31.43 There are thousands of communities right here in 00:09:31.97\00:09:34.24 Bangkok just like that, waiting. 00:09:34.27\00:09:37.11 We're going to a Health Fair that's coming up at one of 00:09:37.14\00:09:42.44 Bangkok's largest and most heavily populated places. 00:09:42.48\00:09:47.12 So come with us. This is Bernard, and he's one of our 00:09:47.15\00:09:51.09 friends. I was introducing him to the team, and I wanted him to 00:09:51.12\00:09:55.26 say, you know, find out what he's doing here. 00:09:55.29\00:09:57.63 And I introduced you as a missionary. 00:09:57.66\00:10:00.06 So you're correcting me? Well... 00:10:00.10\00:10:02.76 So what's the definition of a missionary? 00:10:02.80\00:10:04.73 Oh, well actually it's true I'm, a missionary, but it's not the 00:10:04.77\00:10:08.87 reason why I came to Bangkok, alright? 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.54 It's not my profession, put it that way. 00:10:10.57\00:10:13.94 Oh. So your profession doesn't let you be a missionary? 00:10:13.98\00:10:19.08 It's nice to be a missionary also. 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.88 See, Bernard here, who is from Germany, and he's a church 00:10:30.09\00:10:36.56 member, very active at the English church, has a great 00:10:36.60\00:10:41.47 heart to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ 00:10:41.50\00:10:43.91 among the Thai people. 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.27 And he's pushing to, you know, Pastor Venn, how are we 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.51 doing with our media? 00:10:48.54\00:10:49.88 How are we doing with our websites? 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.25 And so our laymen... he's one of our supportive laymen. 00:10:51.28\00:10:54.28 But when I interviewed him at the BTS station, 00:10:54.32\00:10:58.82 and I introduced you to him as a missionary, because I know 00:10:58.85\00:11:04.16 that he has this burden to proclaim the gospel. 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.39 He says, No, I'm not a missionary. 00:11:06.43\00:11:08.06 Because I find that this attitude that unless I'm paid 00:11:08.10\00:11:14.44 by the church, unless I have the official, you know, card, 00:11:14.47\00:11:18.81 and there's a vote in action, people don't see themselves, 00:11:18.84\00:11:22.68 our church members don't see themselves as the ones who are, 00:11:22.71\00:11:26.51 you know, their role of proclaiming the gospel. 00:11:26.58\00:11:31.62 And so here he is a missionary because he is one who is sent. 00:11:31.65\00:11:36.79 God has called him, 1. to be a Christian, 2. God has called him 00:11:36.83\00:11:41.90 to have grace, and to have mercy, and He's given him all 00:11:41.93\00:11:46.10 these showers of blessings. 00:11:46.13\00:11:47.47 and an ambassador for Christ, and to go and send that out 00:11:52.64\00:11:55.84 to his business colleagues, and the other people that he 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.88 has influence and contact with, who've never heard the 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.92 name of Jesus Christ. 00:12:01.95\00:12:03.28 So who is a missionary? 00:12:03.32\00:12:04.65 I think that Matthew 28:17-20 is the one that is where I would 00:12:13.09\00:12:20.00 like to point people to. 00:12:20.04\00:12:22.50 Because here, and the reason why I include 17 through 20, 00:12:22.54\00:12:25.27 and a lot of people don't like to use that is because Jesus 00:12:25.31\00:12:28.91 gathers the twelve disciples to the mountain, and then they all 00:12:28.94\00:12:32.35 fall down and worship Him. 00:12:32.38\00:12:33.72 But then the next phrase is very key. 00:12:33.75\00:12:37.69 It says, and some doubted. 00:12:37.72\00:12:39.65 We always like to blame Doubting Thomas as, Well, he's the one. 00:12:39.69\00:12:43.53 He's the skeptic among us. 00:12:43.56\00:12:44.89 He's the cynical one. 00:12:44.93\00:12:46.26 He wants to see things, evidence, and he wants things 00:12:46.29\00:12:49.70 in black and white. 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.07 But the Greek there is very clear that was more than Thomas 00:12:51.10\00:12:55.74 as well as, and this is where I plateau in our lives today, 00:12:55.80\00:13:00.71 and to my life, that Jesus then goes into the call, to go to the 00:13:00.74\00:13:04.91 world, to go to the globe, and then to proclaim His message. 00:13:04.95\00:13:09.12 Who does He give this message and great commission to? 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.55 He gives it to everyone, even those of us who say, 00:13:12.59\00:13:15.89 like Bernard did here, is like Well, really, I'm not called. 00:13:15.92\00:13:20.60 But I have doubts about myself. 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.70 I have doubts, and I have questions. 00:13:22.73\00:13:27.00 I don't have everything all figured out. 00:13:27.04\00:13:29.10 But even to those people, Jesus Christ calls us... 00:13:29.14\00:13:32.74 to then proclaim the message that Jesus Christ loves them, 00:13:37.98\00:13:43.05 He's coming back, and to prepare this planet for His soon return. 00:13:43.08\00:13:46.92 That's... It's true that that disease is global. 00:13:57.93\00:14:02.20 That there's this attitude... 00:14:02.24\00:14:06.04 Like Bernard here, like you, that we are then to, 00:14:13.68\00:14:18.29 based on your skills, and interests, and how God has wired 00:14:18.32\00:14:22.16 you, and has given you interest, and skills, and abilities, 00:14:22.19\00:14:26.59 experiences, even dreams and imagination that we are then 00:14:26.66\00:14:31.03 to unleash, and to have and support you in going out 00:14:31.07\00:14:36.37 to spread the gospel. 00:14:36.40\00:14:38.07 Not that I have to do everything as the paid employee. 00:14:38.11\00:14:43.45 You know, I keep hearing you say that, but I just want to 00:14:47.35\00:14:51.15 sometimes it just makes me want to hit you 00:14:51.22\00:14:53.66 because you actually have. 00:14:53.69\00:14:55.19 You've been trained, but you may not have known it. 00:14:55.22\00:14:57.99 Because how many Sabbath School classes have you been to? 00:14:58.03\00:15:01.26 Okay, and how many times did you see your teacher open the 00:15:01.83\00:15:05.70 Bible and then address, and how many, 00:15:05.73\00:15:09.10 and how many, and address real questions or things like that? 00:15:09.14\00:15:15.34 How many evangelistic meetings have you attended? 00:15:15.38\00:15:17.98 Okay, and so this is where you have had a chance to open God's 00:15:19.45\00:15:23.42 word and see how the truths for today then can be applied to 00:15:23.45\00:15:28.42 real life people and their real life questions. 00:15:28.49\00:15:31.56 Then, and then how many times, how many sermons 00:15:31.59\00:15:35.06 have you listed to? 00:15:35.10\00:15:37.47 Alright, and so this is where, this is where that training 00:15:39.10\00:15:43.00 has in some ways has been informal. 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.17 You know, you haven't set down in a formal class, 00:15:46.21\00:15:49.24 paid your tuition, gotten grades, given a test. 00:15:49.28\00:15:52.21 And maybe we should do it that way. 00:15:52.28\00:15:53.82 You know, there are some of those times where that formal 00:15:53.85\00:15:58.29 education, people will then feel I'm now a certified missionary. 00:15:58.32\00:16:02.86 You know, I have my little diploma and my, 00:16:02.92\00:16:05.56 and I got an A from missionary school. 00:16:05.59\00:16:08.03 But the reality of it is that we, our 00:16:08.06\00:16:11.47 And so this is where, it's been my experience that whether 00:16:15.17\00:16:20.78 you're a businessman, a housewife, a college student, 00:16:20.81\00:16:23.98 God is working in your heart to use you in these last days 00:16:24.01\00:16:29.92 to then proclaim His message. And... 00:16:29.95\00:16:33.59 Because it's like a puzzle. 00:16:34.82\00:16:36.96 And God in His sovereignty, God in His plan, gives us the 00:16:39.86\00:16:44.10 privilege of partnering with Him to proclaim 00:16:44.13\00:16:47.00 the message, and to live it. 00:16:47.04\00:16:49.54 But if we don't, then there's going to be a gap there, 00:16:49.57\00:16:53.14 and God's going to have to try to work things out. 00:16:53.17\00:16:57.51 Yeah, well, I mean they're... many are called, 00:17:04.69\00:17:07.56 but many are lazy. Okay, let's rephrase that. 00:17:07.59\00:17:12.83 And why? And maybe that's instead of blaming you, John, 00:17:15.66\00:17:21.74 maybe what we should do is that we need to be the ones who 00:17:21.77\00:17:27.81 commission people like you, people like Bernard, 00:17:27.84\00:17:30.71 you know, my son, my kids, our community, 00:17:30.75\00:17:37.09 our church members. 00:17:37.15\00:17:38.49 And this is where whatever it takes. 00:17:53.74\00:17:57.27 I've got calls right now that are unfilled through the 00:17:57.31\00:18:01.81 For graphic designers, for video people, for lawyers to teach 00:18:04.15\00:18:10.19 English at a law school. 00:18:10.22\00:18:12.35 Again, these are short term calls for missionaries, 00:18:12.39\00:18:18.56 but it could be long term, of course. 00:18:18.59\00:18:20.80 But this is where I think some, 00:18:20.83\00:18:23.93 And so they think, Well, I'm not a pastor, so what can I do? 00:18:27.90\00:18:32.41 And so it's like, Well, Doug, you're the pastor, and so we're 00:18:32.47\00:18:36.95 paying our tithes and offerings, and so 00:18:36.98\00:18:39.25 Where actually, I think God is calling each one of us to go 00:18:40.62\00:18:45.85 to where He wants us to go. 00:18:45.89\00:18:48.09 But does that mean we neglect the work back home? 00:18:51.86\00:18:55.23 And that's where my, how I resolve that question is like, 00:18:55.26\00:19:02.34 some people say, Well, we should focus at home, 00:19:02.37\00:19:04.91 or we should focus overseas. 00:19:04.94\00:19:06.34 And it like, Well, how about we focus on Christ, and then Christ 00:19:06.37\00:19:09.81 will work on people's hearts to then those who need to go 00:19:09.84\00:19:12.98 overseas will go, as long as they are obedient. 00:19:13.01\00:19:16.05 And then those who are called to serve in our homelands, 00:19:16.08\00:19:21.29 wherever those may be, then they're called by God, too. 00:19:21.32\00:19:24.49 And so instead of trying to make this dichotomy, you know, 00:19:24.53\00:19:28.46 separation, we need to be able to say 00:19:28.50\00:19:32.63 whether that's overseas or at home. 00:19:36.30\00:19:40.58 Yeah, Ellen White does talk about the reflex action where 00:19:45.11\00:19:49.52 when we invest our life, and energy, and our interests, 00:19:49.55\00:19:53.15 and imagination in the work overseas, 00:19:53.19\00:19:55.42 then we receive this reflex action. 00:19:55.46\00:19:57.73 Ah, the reflex action, yes. That is correct. 00:19:59.59\00:20:02.10 Well, how has that worked? 00:20:06.60\00:20:07.94 Yeah, and so that's where, you know, I know of men... 00:20:09.04\00:20:12.87 Well, and that's one reason why I've really, it's been my burden 00:20:13.98\00:20:18.98 is to mentoring to train the young adults, and to train the 00:20:19.01\00:20:23.28 young people to say, You can make a difference. 00:20:23.32\00:20:25.82 And whether it's my own kids, or the college students from 00:20:25.85\00:20:31.49 around the world who joined us here in Bangkok, or through our 00:20:31.53\00:20:35.50 other volunteer programs, even involving the Thai young adults, 00:20:35.53\00:20:40.07 and college students, or high school students to get them 00:20:40.10\00:20:44.17 engaged that, You mean I can do something now? 00:20:44.21\00:20:48.61 ...in a small way? 00:20:54.85\00:20:56.28 And so, or you can, as long as they're in a structured 00:20:56.32\00:21:03.02 environment where, you know, like what we did yesterday with 00:21:03.06\00:21:05.83 the rice give away, and the children's ministry program, 00:21:05.86\00:21:09.90 and the home visitation and prayer ministry. 00:21:09.93\00:21:13.74 I mean we had your daughter, and she's eight years old, 00:21:13.77\00:21:19.01 and my daughter, Hannah, she's eleven, and then we had Kia, 00:21:19.04\00:21:24.15 she's five or six. And so what did they do? 00:21:24.18\00:21:27.45 So they sang songs. 00:21:27.48\00:21:30.09 You should have seen the joy that these three girls... 00:21:30.12\00:21:32.75 they brought to the homes when we're going visiting in the 00:21:32.79\00:21:36.19 slum, that as you're visiting the grandma's and grandpa's who 00:21:36.22\00:21:41.16 couldn't make it out to the community program, 00:21:41.20\00:21:43.33 And one grandma, she just saw the girls there, and so she just 00:21:45.97\00:21:50.34 came and gave them hugs. 00:21:50.37\00:21:51.87 Yeah, and that kind of ministry that a kid can do that we stuffy 00:21:54.21\00:22:00.45 adults, we can't do that. 00:22:00.48\00:22:04.95 Yeah, well, and that's what it's going to take is that ground to 00:22:08.76\00:22:11.99 ground saturation, and so that's why 00:22:12.03\00:22:13.70 We've got to get on this train. 00:22:18.10\00:22:19.87 More than half a million people ride these 00:22:20.70\00:22:23.07 trains every single day. 00:22:23.10\00:22:24.64 That's more people than the entire population 00:22:24.67\00:22:28.28 of Sacramento, California. 00:22:28.31\00:22:30.11 So this is the poor missionary country? 00:22:33.88\00:22:36.72 We're told to go everywhere. 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.29 This place is the biggest, or one of the biggest malls 00:22:39.85\00:22:43.93 here in the country. 00:22:43.96\00:22:45.83 I don't think we're supposed to be filming here, 00:22:45.86\00:22:47.63 but we'll see what we can do. 00:22:47.66\00:22:49.10 So we're on the way to the eighth floor to meet with 00:22:58.01\00:23:00.04 the mall management. 00:23:00.08\00:23:01.41 I don't know where I'm going, so... 00:23:03.35\00:23:05.01 This place is like a massive department store with around 00:23:07.15\00:23:10.35 2,000 shops where you can find anything, from perfume to 00:23:10.39\00:23:14.02 t- shirts, to cell phones, and a 100,000 people 00:23:14.06\00:23:16.79 coming through every day. 00:23:16.83\00:23:18.16 This is the biggest mall in Thailand, and they're going 00:23:18.19\00:23:22.40 to see your design. 00:23:22.43\00:23:23.77 Ah, to see my design! 00:23:23.80\00:23:25.60 Welcome to the real world. 00:23:25.63\00:23:27.24 So you do your best. 00:23:28.17\00:23:29.80 The Lord's opened this door and so the Lord's giving you 00:23:29.84\00:23:33.71 insight, and so you just say, Here's some ideas. 00:23:33.74\00:23:39.08 Tell me about this Thai word I've been 00:23:40.12\00:23:43.62 hearing about; mi penri? 00:23:43.65\00:23:45.49 No problem. This word, mi penri, is... 00:23:45.55\00:23:51.23 Mi penri means never mind. 00:24:01.00\00:24:03.00 Never mind? 00:24:03.04\00:24:04.37 It's not so polite. 00:24:04.41\00:24:05.74 It's not so polite? 00:24:05.77\00:24:07.11 Yes. If you... 00:24:07.14\00:24:08.48 So how would you say it so it's more polite? 00:24:08.51\00:24:10.31 It's more polite, I think for me, mi penri capi sut. 00:24:10.35\00:24:14.75 Oh, so cop, so add the indent, the male classifier at the end. 00:24:14.78\00:24:18.55 Yeah. So mi penri cop. Cop, yes. 00:24:18.59\00:24:20.59 Oh, so thank you. You have good English. 00:24:20.62\00:24:22.79 I thank you very much. Thank you. 00:24:22.82\00:24:24.33 Here's a photo of where we're... the Lord has provided this 00:24:34.44\00:24:38.67 health expo, and it's going to be right, where? 00:24:38.71\00:24:42.01 But they don't have the little shine there. 00:24:43.11\00:24:45.55 No! That one that invaded my design. 00:24:45.58\00:24:48.58 I, just as a curiosity, the time when I came here before, 00:24:48.65\00:24:52.75 I was able to then ask one of the people who 00:24:52.79\00:24:57.03 operate the bathrooms. 00:24:57.06\00:25:00.33 I said, How many people come here a day? 00:25:00.36\00:25:03.47 And she said, Um, in my bathroom alone about 10,000 a day. 00:25:03.50\00:25:10.47 10,000 a day used her bathroom. 00:25:10.51\00:25:13.27 That's a lot of people. 00:25:13.31\00:25:14.74 But when we look at Christ's ministry we see Him going 00:25:14.78\00:25:17.61 to where the masses of people were also, to the main 00:25:17.65\00:25:20.42 thorofares of travel; the big city centers where they gather 00:25:20.45\00:25:23.35 for business, or health, or pleasure. 00:25:23.39\00:25:25.09 He did this in order to bring salvation to them, 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.56 rather than waiting for them to come to Him. 00:25:27.59\00:25:29.96 Now this is the area where they're planning to set up 00:25:31.09\00:25:33.46 a large tent in just a few weeks time. 00:25:33.50\00:25:35.60 And Nicole's training in graphic design is really helpful 00:25:35.63\00:25:38.80 in arresting the attention of the people. 00:25:38.83\00:25:41.07 We spent the last three hours building relationships with the 00:25:41.97\00:25:45.17 mall administration and the leadership team. 00:25:45.21\00:25:47.44 When I first arrived it was, the Lord put a dream in my heart 00:25:47.48\00:25:51.25 to do something here downtown, where everyone is. 00:25:51.28\00:25:55.52 You can just look around us, and there's hundreds of, well, 00:25:55.55\00:25:58.25 there's thousands of people. 00:25:58.29\00:25:59.62 And it's exciting to see that four years later, after God put 00:25:59.65\00:26:03.73 this dream in my heart to do something in a public setting in 00:26:03.76\00:26:07.56 downtown Bangkok, to actually see it come to reality. 00:26:07.60\00:26:10.93 We were going to do it over there, but you can see there's 00:26:10.97\00:26:14.10 a little spirit shrine, or a big spirit shrine, so instead they 00:26:14.14\00:26:19.37 invited us to come to this side of the mall. 00:26:19.41\00:26:22.14 I think it's a little narrower than we were looking at before, 00:26:22.18\00:26:25.05 so it's a little less elbow room for people, but I think that 00:26:25.08\00:26:28.82 the sign situation is actually a lot better. 00:26:28.88\00:26:31.52 We don't have to pay for stands. 00:26:31.55\00:26:32.89 We can use, if we get permission, these built-in 00:26:32.92\00:26:36.36 stands that are kind of on one side of the walkway. 00:26:36.39\00:26:38.63 And I think those look a lot nicer than they would if we just 00:26:38.66\00:26:41.76 popped them up, and it's all built for you. 00:26:41.80\00:26:43.73 Nice. It's kind of a nice area. 00:26:43.77\00:26:45.87 You've been here for three weeks, and you are doing major 00:26:45.90\00:26:50.87 design; the biggest design project that Bangkok Adventist 00:26:50.91\00:26:55.84 Church has ever done. 00:26:55.91\00:26:57.51 No pressure, right? Ha! 00:26:57.55\00:26:59.15 I mean you, you had looked in the AVS call book, 00:27:01.42\00:27:04.82 the student missionary call book? Yeah. 00:27:04.85\00:27:07.42 And there was one call for a designer. 00:27:07.46\00:27:09.99 Yeah, this is the only one. 00:27:10.03\00:27:11.93 Do you know anything about that call? 00:27:11.96\00:27:14.03 Yeah, I was praying. 00:27:14.10\00:27:16.10 I was praying to the Lord to send a missionary designer. 00:27:16.13\00:27:19.47 I'd never heard that term before, missionary designer. 00:27:19.50\00:27:22.74 Well, we're told, I mean you just look around the city, and 00:27:22.77\00:27:26.41 And so this is something where it's through this art form, 00:27:30.28\00:27:33.52 or through this discipline, this skill, and I think actually it's 00:27:33.55\00:27:36.62 That how do you take 00:27:37.89\00:27:40.06 ...so then that way people, instead of selling handbags, 00:27:43.79\00:27:47.23 or stuff that's going to burn anyway; watches, and cars, 00:27:47.26\00:27:50.67 and stuff like that, 00:27:50.70\00:27:52.03 God can use every single one of you in reaching people within 00:28:15.26\00:28:20.83 your local area, but far beyond. 00:28:20.86\00:28:23.10 You don't need to be a pastor, or a teacher, or someone in a 00:28:23.13\00:28:26.97 traditional line of outreach to be part of this great mission 00:28:27.00\00:28:30.81 endeavor for the Lord. 00:28:30.87\00:28:32.47 I encourage all of you to find ways in which you can be 00:28:32.51\00:28:37.05 involved, not only by mission giving, but by practical total 00:28:37.08\00:28:42.05 member involvement; everyone working together. 00:28:42.08\00:28:44.92 Many people are responding. 00:28:44.95\00:28:46.42 You could be one of them. Look at: 00:28:46.45\00:28:48.96 to find out ways in which you can serve locally and globally. 00:28:51.09\00:28:55.50 I thank my God every time I remember you. 00:28:55.53\00:28:58.17 The Philippians supported the Apostle Paul when he was 00:28:58.20\00:29:02.00 doing his mission work. 00:29:02.04\00:29:03.37 And it was through today, through your sacrifice that 00:29:03.41\00:29:06.71 you're able to encourage and support the gospel workers 00:29:06.78\00:29:10.28 around the world as they share Jesus. 00:29:10.31\00:29:12.68 Next week on, I Want This City, we visit a poor community that's 00:29:13.95\00:29:17.82 requested us to be there full time, 00:29:17.85\00:29:19.69 but it's not all good news. 00:29:19.72\00:29:21.52 Watch, I Want This City, Wednesday, 00:29:25.76\00:29:27.43 9:30 Central, 10:30 Eastern. 00:29:27.46\00:29:29.36
