Welcome back to In Search of the Truth. 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.25 I'm Karen Byrd. 00:00:04.28\00:00:05.71 In our last program we learned that the God of creation 00:00:06.01\00:00:09.03 wrote His character - His law - in stone. 00:00:09.06\00:00:12.53 We also learned that this law is still our guide, 00:00:12.72\00:00:15.62 our moral compass today. 00:00:15.65\00:00:18.08 How comforting to discover that it is His plan 00:00:18.38\00:00:21.90 to write that law on our hearts. 00:00:21.93\00:00:24.77 Today Charles is back at Mt. Sinai to take a closer look 00:00:24.80\00:00:28.36 at the one commandment that is nearly universally ignored. 00:00:28.39\00:00:32.03 Join us as we go in search of the REST of the story. 00:00:32.06\00:00:36.97 If you jump on the World Wide Web 00:01:15.61\00:01:17.84 and go to a web site called optillusions.com 00:01:17.87\00:01:21.01 you will find some very interesting optical illusions. 00:01:21.04\00:01:24.05 You can even purchase some posters of them. 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.53 Here are two of them. What do you see here? 00:01:26.56\00:01:30.32 Most of us quickly see the face of an Indian. 00:01:30.45\00:01:33.77 Or is it an Indian? 00:01:33.80\00:01:35.56 If you look closer you can see 00:01:35.87\00:01:37.87 that it is the back of an Eskimo stepping into a cave. 00:01:37.90\00:01:41.66 OK, here is another optical illusion. 00:01:41.69\00:01:44.03 How many colors are on this picture? 00:01:44.06\00:01:46.70 Look carefully. 00:01:46.73\00:01:48.34 Some of us might think that there are four, 00:01:48.69\00:01:51.38 but actually there are only three. 00:01:51.41\00:01:53.38 White, Green, and Pink. 00:01:53.41\00:01:55.58 You see, things are not always what they appear to be. 00:01:56.17\00:01:59.32 Sometimes we're so sure of what we first see 00:01:59.35\00:02:01.93 that we don't consider what we might have missed. 00:02:01.96\00:02:04.84 Let's look at another illusion together. 00:02:04.87\00:02:07.13 Here is a top hat. 00:02:07.16\00:02:08.85 Which length is longer, the brim of the hat or the height? 00:02:08.88\00:02:13.80 Your eyes are probably telling you 00:02:14.02\00:02:15.57 that the hat is taller than the brim is wide 00:02:15.60\00:02:18.43 but since I've set you up, 00:02:18.46\00:02:19.74 showing you two other optical illusions, 00:02:19.77\00:02:21.72 you are probably willing to consider 00:02:21.75\00:02:23.73 that the brim may be wider. 00:02:23.76\00:02:25.89 To prove to ourselves which length is longer 00:02:25.92\00:02:28.56 we must use a ruler. 00:02:28.59\00:02:30.17 When we do, 00:02:30.20\00:02:31.30 we find that the brim of the hat is 13 inches wide 00:02:31.45\00:02:34.24 while the height is only 12 and a half. 00:02:34.27\00:02:37.70 See this check for $1,000? 00:02:37.78\00:02:40.10 This is not an illusion. 00:02:40.19\00:02:42.34 It is my guarantee 00:02:42.65\00:02:43.94 that my search for truth is an honest one. 00:02:43.97\00:02:46.66 I'm going to offer this money to the first person 00:02:46.69\00:02:49.08 who can give me the missing text. 00:02:49.11\00:02:51.76 It's a text that I've looked for 00:02:51.79\00:02:53.80 but have been unable to find. 00:02:53.83\00:02:55.33 I'll tell you more about it later in the broadcast. 00:02:55.36\00:02:58.38 In our last broadcast we talked about the Ten Commandments 00:02:58.41\00:03:02.05 that were written by the very finger of God 00:03:02.08\00:03:04.80 and given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. 00:03:04.83\00:03:07.60 Satan, the enemy of God, 00:03:07.63\00:03:09.24 has encouraged men to set this moral compass aside 00:03:09.27\00:03:12.69 and disregard His plans for happiness. 00:03:12.72\00:03:15.84 Satan has even gone so far now 00:03:15.87\00:03:17.88 that he has pastoral imposters in God's church 00:03:17.91\00:03:21.83 telling people that the law has been done away with. 00:03:21.86\00:03:25.47 Jesus disagrees with these false prophets. 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.99 He said in Luke 16:17, 00:03:29.19\00:03:31.77 "It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, 00:03:32.08\00:03:35.51 than one tittle of the law to fail." 00:03:35.54\00:03:38.34 Here is the same verse in the New International Version. 00:03:38.37\00:03:42.03 "It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear 00:03:42.06\00:03:46.05 than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law." 00:03:46.08\00:03:50.26 Heaven and earth are still here 00:03:50.29\00:03:52.40 and according to Jesus so is His law. 00:03:52.43\00:03:54.63 God tells us the same thing in Psalm 89. 00:03:54.66\00:03:58.16 "My covenant I will not break, 00:03:58.32\00:04:00.92 Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips." 00:04:01.04\00:04:04.05 God tells us that He will not change or break His covenant. 00:04:04.08\00:04:08.19 Notice here that the Ten Commandments came from His lips. 00:04:08.22\00:04:12.24 "And God spoke all these words..." 00:04:12.27\00:04:15.25 These commandments were a part of a covenant relationship. 00:04:15.56\00:04:18.84 Now folks, it is utterly impossible 00:04:18.87\00:04:21.04 for any of God's moral law to ever change. 00:04:21.07\00:04:24.76 It would appear that all Ten Commandments are binding today. 00:04:24.92\00:04:29.35 But right in the middle of that law 00:04:29.38\00:04:31.46 is a command that is virtually ignored 00:04:31.49\00:04:33.87 by every religion on planet earth. 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.40 This is what it says. 00:04:36.43\00:04:38.33 In the deserts of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula is a mountain 00:04:38.43\00:04:45.20 that tradition has told us 00:04:45.48\00:04:47.17 is the mountain that God met Moses at. 00:04:47.20\00:04:50.51 It was at this mountain that He wrote with His own finger, 00:04:50.67\00:04:53.36 the Ten Commandments including the Sabbath commandment 00:04:53.39\00:04:55.92 which says, 00:04:55.95\00:04:57.36 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." 00:04:57.75\00:05:00.73 Some people have falsely assumed 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.59 that the Sabbath was given to the Jewish people. 00:05:02.62\00:05:06.15 But the Sabbath has always been there. 00:05:06.18\00:05:07.87 The Sabbath was there in Eden. 00:05:07.90\00:05:09.65 Adam and Eve kept the Sabbath before there ever was any sin. 00:05:09.68\00:05:13.50 And the children of God 00:05:13.53\00:05:15.18 have always kept the Sabbath day holy. 00:05:15.21\00:05:17.64 It was for that purpose that when Moses went into Egypt 00:05:17.67\00:05:20.76 he commanded the people that they should keep the Sabbath. 00:05:20.79\00:05:23.19 You're about to be delivered by the God of creation, 00:05:23.22\00:05:25.73 he told them. 00:05:25.76\00:05:27.00 You need to keep the Sabbath day holy. 00:05:27.03\00:05:28.89 And so he encouraged them to do that. 00:05:28.92\00:05:31.01 The Bible records that that was the complaint of Pharaoh. 00:05:31.04\00:05:33.92 He says, 'You cause the people to Sabot', or to rest. 00:05:33.95\00:05:38.39 So it was that the people began to keep the Sabbath 00:05:38.42\00:05:41.11 even before they came to this mountain 00:05:41.14\00:05:43.24 and had that day written in stone. 00:05:43.27\00:05:46.26 It made Pharaoh angry, 00:05:46.62\00:05:48.56 'Well, if you've got time to rest 00:05:48.64\00:05:49.95 you can make your bricks without straw being supplied.' 00:05:49.98\00:05:53.12 So, he commanded 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.12 that his task masters make them make as many bricks as before 00:05:54.13\00:05:57.50 yet without straw. 00:05:57.53\00:05:59.03 Of course this caused a lot of trouble. 00:05:59.06\00:06:01.62 And finally the people arrived here 00:06:01.65\00:06:03.68 after a magnificent deliverance by God 00:06:03.71\00:06:06.71 and here He wrote with His finger, 00:06:06.74\00:06:08.81 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:06:08.84\00:06:11.85 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 00:06:11.88\00:06:15.56 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: 00:06:15.59\00:06:18.64 in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, 00:06:18.67\00:06:23.16 nor thy daughter, thy manservant, 00:06:23.33\00:06:25.86 nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, 00:06:25.89\00:06:28.45 nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 00:06:28.48\00:06:30.72 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, 00:06:30.75\00:06:33.36 the sea, and all that in them is, 00:06:33.39\00:06:35.68 and rested the seventh day: 00:06:35.71\00:06:38.17 wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it." 00:06:38.21\00:06:43.17 Who made this law? 00:06:43.20\00:06:44.84 According to Exodus 20 it was the God of creation. 00:06:44.91\00:06:49.13 Now you may find it amazing 00:06:49.16\00:06:50.89 that God puts forth His creative power 00:06:50.92\00:06:53.63 as the reason for why we should remember the Sabbath day. 00:06:53.66\00:06:57.24 Not only is creation and the Sabbath linked in Exodus 20 00:06:57.27\00:07:01.89 but if we go back to the first book of the Bible, 00:07:01.92\00:07:04.11 the book of Genesis, 00:07:04.14\00:07:05.59 We discover that here also the Sabbath and creation 00:07:05.62\00:07:09.11 are linked together. 00:07:09.14\00:07:10.98 In Genesis 2 it tells us about the last thing God created. 00:07:11.02\00:07:15.95 Was it man? No it was the Sabbath! 00:07:16.16\00:07:20.12 "And on the seventh day 00:07:20.44\00:07:22.02 God ended his work which he had made; 00:07:22.05\00:07:24.16 and he rested on the seventh day from all his work... 00:07:24.19\00:07:27.58 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.68 because that in it he had rested from all his work 00:07:30.71\00:07:34.33 which God created and made." 00:07:34.36\00:07:36.78 Which day of the week is the Sabbath? 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.86 The commandment tells us that plainly. 00:07:39.89\00:07:42.27 "But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: 00:07:42.30\00:07:46.40 in it thou shalt not do any work." 00:07:46.43\00:07:49.46 Pick up your calendar. 00:07:49.56\00:07:51.25 The weekly cycle has seven days. 00:07:51.28\00:07:53.44 Count them. 00:07:53.47\00:07:54.66 One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. 00:07:54.94\00:08:01.14 The seventh day is the Sabbath. 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.79 This is not Sunday. The Sabbath is not Sunday. 00:08:03.82\00:08:07.82 It is the seventh day of the week. 00:08:08.11\00:08:10.04 How can we know? 00:08:10.07\00:08:11.57 We know because God performed 2080 miracles to say, 00:08:11.83\00:08:17.27 'This is the Sabbath.' 00:08:17.53\00:08:18.69 Something special happened in the valley below. 00:08:18.72\00:08:20.90 If you look down there you can see that it's desert, 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.50 nothing is growing, how are the people going to eat? 00:08:23.53\00:08:26.13 God began to rain down a food called manna. 00:08:26.16\00:08:29.77 When that manna came the people would go out 00:08:29.80\00:08:33.06 on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 00:08:33.09\00:08:36.87 and gather manna. 00:08:36.90\00:08:38.63 They were to gather only enough for that day except on Friday. 00:08:38.91\00:08:44.18 On Friday they were supposed to gather twice as much 00:08:44.46\00:08:47.31 and God would perform a miracle. 00:08:47.34\00:08:49.55 On Monday if they collected any extra 00:08:49.58\00:08:51.27 it would spoil by the next day 00:08:51.30\00:08:53.66 and smell pretty bad from what I read in scriptures. 00:08:53.69\00:08:56.89 But if they collected enough on Friday 00:08:56.92\00:08:59.04 God kept it so that it was preserved over Sabbath 00:08:59.07\00:09:02.84 so they could eat it and no manna fell on Saturday. 00:09:02.87\00:09:07.38 2080 times God said, 'This is the Sabbath.' 00:09:07.70\00:09:10.91 Here it is again, here it is again, 00:09:10.94\00:09:13.13 watch out here it comes again. 00:09:13.16\00:09:15.16 The same Jews who had that miracle performed for them 00:09:15.19\00:09:18.39 have a calendar they have used continuously 00:09:18.42\00:09:21.23 without interruption to this very day. 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.42 Go to any Jewish calendar 00:09:24.45\00:09:26.23 and you'll find that their Saturday Sabbath 00:09:26.26\00:09:28.60 is the same as our Saturday Sabbath. 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.89 Doesn't the creator of all mankind 00:09:32.22\00:09:34.66 have the right to declare what day is His Sabbath? 00:09:34.69\00:09:37.96 Would man tell God His way is wrong? 00:09:37.99\00:09:41.16 Let me ask you an honest question. 00:09:41.46\00:09:43.96 Why do we have a seven-day week? 00:09:43.99\00:09:46.88 Look with me in the book of beginnings. 00:09:47.03\00:09:49.42 "Then God said, 00:09:49.45\00:09:50.83 "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens 00:09:51.01\00:09:53.70 to divide the day from the night; 00:09:53.73\00:09:55.81 and let them be for signs and seasons, 00:09:55.84\00:09:58.53 and for days and years; 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.34 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens 00:10:00.37\00:10:03.24 to give light on the earth"; 00:10:03.27\00:10:05.15 and it was so." 00:10:05.18\00:10:06.85 What makes a year a year? 00:10:07.11\00:10:09.36 One earth orbit around the sun. 00:10:09.40\00:10:11.69 This is just how God created it. 00:10:11.72\00:10:14.12 He said the lights in the firmament would be for years. 00:10:14.15\00:10:17.70 What makes a day a day? 00:10:17.73\00:10:19.82 One rotation of the earth on its axis. 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.70 This is just how God made it. 00:10:22.73\00:10:24.58 He said the lights in the firmament of the sky 00:10:24.61\00:10:27.03 would be for days. 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.98 What makes a month and month? 00:10:29.25\00:10:31.26 One cycle of the moon waxing and waning. 00:10:31.29\00:10:34.16 What makes the four seasons, 00:10:34.19\00:10:35.67 what makes the day and what makes the night? 00:10:35.70\00:10:38.06 Nobody argues the answers to these questions. 00:10:38.09\00:10:40.82 Nobody even questions. 00:10:40.85\00:10:42.72 It is all dictated by the planets and the stars 00:10:42.88\00:10:45.72 just as God created it to be. 00:10:45.75\00:10:48.31 Why do we have a seven-day week? 00:10:48.69\00:10:51.50 It does not fit neatly into the yearly calendar. 00:10:51.53\00:10:54.83 Why not a ten day week? Why not a 5 day week? 00:10:54.86\00:10:58.28 Why is it that for the last 6,000 years 00:10:58.31\00:11:00.91 cultures have been following a seven-day week? 00:11:00.94\00:11:03.72 There is only one reason. Only one. 00:11:03.75\00:11:06.80 Because God made the earth in six days 00:11:06.97\00:11:10.30 and rested on the seventh day 00:11:10.51\00:11:12.25 and blessed the seventh day and made it holy. 00:11:12.28\00:11:14.69 From that day to the present 00:11:14.72\00:11:16.67 there have always been some people who believed 00:11:16.70\00:11:19.66 and obeyed and worshiped and rested on the seventh day. 00:11:19.69\00:11:24.29 It started that way in Eden. 00:11:24.34\00:11:27.07 Adam and Eve were perfect. There was no sin. 00:11:27.34\00:11:30.45 And from that day to this 00:11:30.48\00:11:32.27 we have only two tastes of paradise. 00:11:32.30\00:11:34.56 Only two glimpses of the perfect world 00:11:34.59\00:11:36.63 fresh from the creator's hand. 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.63 One is marriage. 00:11:38.66\00:11:40.82 And when we obey all His laws about marriage from this book, 00:11:41.08\00:11:44.75 when we die to self and live for others, 00:11:44.78\00:11:47.23 our marriages are a little taste of heaven on earth. 00:11:47.26\00:11:50.88 The other institution that comes to us from the perfect world 00:11:50.91\00:11:54.80 is the Sabbath. 00:11:54.83\00:11:56.21 drops what He is busy doing, 00:11:58.00\00:11:59.80 and there is a lot to be busy with... 00:11:59.83\00:12:01.84 and He spends intimate time with His children. 00:12:01.87\00:12:05.56 Did you know that Jesus was the creator? 00:12:05.59\00:12:08.38 That's what the man who wrote the book of Revelation says. 00:12:08.41\00:12:11.59 "All things were made by Him; 00:12:11.62\00:12:13.66 and without him was not any thing made that was made." 00:12:13.69\00:12:16.92 This God, who created the world in six days and nights 00:12:16.95\00:12:20.27 stepped down off His eternal throne 00:12:20.30\00:12:22.63 and took upon himself the form of a servant. 00:12:22.66\00:12:25.89 He didn't just become a man like Adam 00:12:25.92\00:12:29.21 And what do we find the creator God doing on the Sabbath 00:12:33.77\00:12:37.46 as a man here on Earth? 00:12:37.49\00:12:39.56 He was doing just what He did in Eden with Adam and Eve 00:12:39.59\00:12:43.33 when He was fully God. 00:12:43.36\00:12:45.28 He was having fellowship with man. 00:12:45.31\00:12:47.72 "So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. 00:12:47.75\00:12:50.39 And as His custom was, 00:12:50.42\00:12:52.28 He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, 00:12:52.31\00:12:54.97 and stood up to read." 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.97 Some might falsely argue, 00:12:57.06\00:12:59.00 "Well of course He would do that He was a Jew." 00:12:59.03\00:13:02.61 But careful investigation shows Jesus never did anything 00:13:02.64\00:13:05.98 without having a deliberate reason. 00:13:06.01\00:13:08.35 He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath 00:13:08.38\00:13:10.51 because He created the Sabbath. 00:13:10.54\00:13:12.47 As a burden? As a chore? As a duty? No, no, and no. 00:13:12.50\00:13:18.01 In His own words, 00:13:18.24\00:13:19.83 "The Sabbath was made for man." REMEMBER! 00:13:19.98\00:13:24.26 That's how the 4th commandment starts. 00:13:24.50\00:13:26.95 Remember! 00:13:26.98\00:13:28.55 The Sabbath has been there since the dawn of creation. 00:13:28.78\00:13:31.65 It was the crowning act of His creative week. 00:13:31.68\00:13:34.67 Then God rested. 00:13:34.70\00:13:36.18 Because He was tired? NO. 00:13:36.39\00:13:38.78 He stopped to enjoy what He had made, 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.39 to fellowship with His newest creation. 00:13:41.42\00:13:44.70 But He made the Sabbath for man. 00:13:44.74\00:13:47.53 Adam and Eve, our first parents, 00:13:47.73\00:13:50.03 were created on the 6th day of the week, 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.93 our Friday. 00:13:51.96\00:13:53.24 And within a few hours they were being invited to rest. 00:13:53.46\00:13:57.66 REST! Rest from what? 00:13:57.69\00:14:00.22 They weren't even tired! 00:14:00.46\00:14:02.38 No, not rest from what. Wrong question. 00:14:02.41\00:14:05.97 They were invited to rest IN. 00:14:06.18\00:14:08.52 They rested in God's creative power, 00:14:08.55\00:14:11.03 they rested in God's creative genius, 00:14:11.06\00:14:13.60 they rested in His finished work, 00:14:13.63\00:14:15.96 and they rested and reveled in God's personal presence. 00:14:15.99\00:14:21.26 Now, about the $1,000 for the missing text. 00:14:21.46\00:14:24.76 If God gave us His Decalogue as a moral guide, 00:14:24.79\00:14:27.85 a written view of His character, 00:14:27.88\00:14:29.65 then there must be a place where He changed it. 00:14:29.68\00:14:32.52 There must be a place 00:14:32.55\00:14:33.91 because most of the people who claim that Jesus is their Savior 00:14:33.94\00:14:37.24 don't keep the Sabbath holy according to the commandment. 00:14:37.27\00:14:40.70 Most of them, if they keep any day as a holy day, keep Sunday. 00:14:40.73\00:14:45.04 And even when they keep Sunday 00:14:45.07\00:14:46.85 they don't obey the direct command 00:14:46.88\00:14:48.85 "In it you shall do no work." 00:14:48.88\00:14:52.31 I've read my Bible through multiple times 00:14:52.58\00:14:55.27 but I have not been able to find the text 00:14:55.30\00:14:57.57 where He made that change. 00:14:57.60\00:14:59.47 I found the one where He said 00:14:59.50\00:15:01.19 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." 00:15:01.22\00:15:03.93 I found the one that said, 00:15:03.96\00:15:05.24 "The LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." 00:15:05.27\00:15:08.56 If He changed His mind surely He would have told us. 00:15:08.59\00:15:11.91 Find me the missing text, 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.68 the one that changed God's day from Sabbath to Sunday 00:15:13.71\00:15:16.79 and the $1,000 is yours. 00:15:16.82\00:15:19.32 But lest you spend a great deal of time looking, 00:15:19.57\00:15:22.11 let me help your search. 00:15:22.14\00:15:23.89 The word Sunday is not in the Bible. 00:15:23.92\00:15:26.46 That is a pagan name in honor of the Sun. 00:15:26.49\00:15:29.01 Look in your Strong's Exhaustive Concordance under "first." 00:15:29.04\00:15:33.22 You will find that there are 47 scripture references 00:15:33.25\00:15:36.53 with the phrase "first day." 00:15:36.56\00:15:38.95 Of those 47 passages only 8 are talking about the "first day" 00:15:39.14\00:15:44.28 as referring to Sunday, the first day of the week. 00:15:44.31\00:15:47.26 Seven of them are in the New Testament. 00:15:47.29\00:15:49.68 Here on the screen I've listed the first four references. 00:15:49.71\00:15:53.15 Each of them refers to Jesus being raised from the dead 00:15:53.18\00:15:56.43 on the first day of the week. 00:15:56.46\00:15:57.70 I'm so thankful that He rose from the dead 00:15:57.73\00:16:00.89 and I duly note 00:16:00.92\00:16:02.35 that each of the texts states the historical truth 00:16:02.41\00:16:05.56 that Jesus rose on the first day of the week. 00:16:05.59\00:16:08.06 This is, of course, 00:16:08.09\00:16:09.30 the number one reason given by those who keep Sunday 00:16:09.33\00:16:12.79 as their day of worship. 00:16:12.82\00:16:14.24 But as I look carefully over all these passages 00:16:14.27\00:16:17.21 not one gives any indication that God has changed His mind 00:16:17.24\00:16:21.11 about the Sabbath being His holy day, set apart for mankind. 00:16:21.14\00:16:26.14 The Bible does give us a memorial of the death, 00:16:26.17\00:16:29.31 burial and resurrection of the Christ and that is Baptism. 00:16:29.34\00:16:33.72 You can read it for yourself in Romans chapter 6 verses 3-6. 00:16:33.75\00:16:38.37 God never gave people authority to institute another memorial 00:16:38.40\00:16:42.36 which would destroy the Sabbath memorial 00:16:42.39\00:16:44.76 that He Himself instituted at creation. 00:16:44.79\00:16:48.07 Let's look at the next first day text. 00:16:48.17\00:16:50.62 It's found in John 20 verse 19. 00:16:50.65\00:16:54.13 "Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, 00:16:54.39\00:16:57.97 when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, 00:16:58.00\00:17:00.80 for fear of the Jews, 00:17:00.83\00:17:02.28 Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, 00:17:02.31\00:17:05.58 "Peace be with you." 00:17:05.61\00:17:07.41 Notice here that the disciples 00:17:07.64\00:17:09.36 were not holding a meeting to honor the resurrection. 00:17:09.39\00:17:12.39 They did not even believe in the resurrection at this point. 00:17:12.42\00:17:15.68 They were meeting behind locked doors "for fear of the Jews". 00:17:15.71\00:17:20.78 They were afraid 00:17:20.88\00:17:22.08 that they might soon meet the same fate as Jesus. 00:17:22.11\00:17:24.75 OK, we've looked at 5 of the 7 first day texts. 00:17:24.78\00:17:28.27 Let's look at the 6th. 00:17:28.30\00:17:30.32 1Corinthians chapter 16 verse 2, 00:17:30.46\00:17:33.15 "On the first day of the week 00:17:33.54\00:17:35.20 let each one of you lay something aside, 00:17:35.23\00:17:38.13 storing up as he may prosper, 00:17:38.16\00:17:40.10 that there be no collections when I come." 00:17:40.13\00:17:42.68 This text does not say anything about keeping this day 00:17:42.71\00:17:46.22 as a holy day of worship in honor of the resurrection. 00:17:46.25\00:17:49.37 Paul was requesting money for the Jerusalem Christians 00:17:49.40\00:17:52.39 who were suffering from famine 00:17:52.42\00:17:53.96 according to Acts 11 and Romans 15. 00:17:53.99\00:17:56.92 He was instructing the Corinthian Christians 00:17:56.95\00:17:59.32 to prepare for this offering 00:17:59.35\00:18:00.92 laying aside at home a certain amount of money each week 00:18:00.95\00:18:04.69 for this special offering. 00:18:04.72\00:18:06.84 Please note that this was an individual laying aside, 00:18:06.87\00:18:10.04 and not a collective laying aside at a church meeting. 00:18:10.07\00:18:13.37 They were putting money aside for this offering 00:18:13.40\00:18:16.08 that would be collected later, when Paul arrived. 00:18:16.11\00:18:18.90 There certainly is no evidence in this passage 00:18:18.93\00:18:21.68 for Sunday keeping. 00:18:21.71\00:18:23.37 OK, The last of the first day texts from Acts chapter 20. 00:18:23.57\00:18:28.55 "Now on the first day of the week, 00:18:28.78\00:18:30.51 when the disciples came together to break bread, 00:18:30.54\00:18:33.07 Paul, ready to depart the next day, 00:18:33.10\00:18:35.65 spoke to them and continued his message until midnight." 00:18:35.68\00:18:39.06 There were many lamps in the upper room 00:18:39.09\00:18:41.10 where they were gathered together. 00:18:41.13\00:18:42.72 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, 00:18:42.75\00:18:46.29 who was sinking into a deep sleep. 00:18:46.32\00:18:49.06 He was overcome by sleep; 00:18:49.09\00:18:50.31 and as Paul continued speaking, 00:18:50.34\00:18:52.34 he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 00:18:52.37\00:18:56.63 But Paul went down, fell on him, 00:18:56.66\00:18:58.79 and embracing him said, 00:18:58.82\00:19:00.32 "Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him." 00:19:00.35\00:19:04.12 "Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, 00:19:04.15\00:19:07.58 and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed." 00:19:07.61\00:19:11.82 By the way, 00:19:11.85\00:19:12.93 this is the best anecdotal text for worshiping on Sunday, 00:19:12.96\00:19:16.16 but those who use it that way 00:19:16.19\00:19:17.51 are ignoring some important points. 00:19:17.54\00:19:19.61 Notice when this meeting actually took place: 00:19:19.64\00:19:22.24 the evening of the first day of the week. 00:19:22.27\00:19:25.01 In Biblical times the day was reckoned from sunset to sunset, 00:19:25.04\00:19:28.63 "from even to even" were told in Genesis 1:5. 00:19:28.66\00:19:32.16 Thus the dark part of the first day of the week 00:19:32.19\00:19:34.72 in Biblical times would be what we would today call 00:19:34.75\00:19:37.19 Saturday night. 00:19:37.22\00:19:38.66 The New English Bible translates this verse: 00:19:38.92\00:19:41.63 "On the Saturday night, 00:19:41.66\00:19:43.16 in our assembly for the breaking of bread." 00:19:43.19\00:19:45.52 This breaking of bread was a term for eating a meal together. 00:19:45.55\00:19:49.43 What was actually taking place 00:19:49.46\00:19:51.39 was a Saturday night fellowship meal held in Paul's honor 00:19:51.42\00:19:54.51 because he was about to leave in the morning 00:19:54.54\00:19:56.77 and he might never see them again. 00:19:56.80\00:19:59.00 He was anxious to impart all the counsel of God that he could, 00:19:59.03\00:20:02.55 so the scripture says he spent the entire night, 00:20:02.58\00:20:05.05 from sundown to sunup, preaching to them. 00:20:05.08\00:20:08.34 According to verse 11, 00:20:08.37\00:20:10.03 on Sunday morning the apostle Paul and his company 00:20:10.06\00:20:13.06 departed on their journey. 00:20:13.09\00:20:15.29 Why didn't they stay for Sunday morning worship 00:20:15.53\00:20:17.76 if they were keeping Sunday? 00:20:17.79\00:20:19.72 Sunday was not set aside as a 24 hour Sabbath day of rest, 00:20:19.75\00:20:23.75 but a travel day. 00:20:23.78\00:20:25.41 Now, here we've looked at every first day of the week text 00:20:25.63\00:20:28.72 in the New Testament, all 7 of them, 00:20:28.75\00:20:30.62 and we have not found the slightest indication 00:20:30.65\00:20:33.18 of any change in the day of worship. 00:20:33.21\00:20:35.42 In fact the New Testament reveals just the opposite. 00:20:35.45\00:20:39.21 Would you like me to show you the 84 times 00:20:39.24\00:20:42.40 the Sabbath was kept in the New Testament? 00:20:42.43\00:20:44.89 This short program will not permit me to give them 00:20:44.92\00:20:47.94 the same amount of time I've given the first day texts 00:20:47.97\00:20:51.44 so you may want to jot these down. 00:20:51.47\00:20:53.60 Also at the end of this program 00:20:53.63\00:20:55.05 we'll offer you a study guide entitled "Don't be Fooled" 00:20:55.08\00:20:58.89 that will give you many other passages of scripture 00:20:58.92\00:21:01.32 to consider. 00:21:01.35\00:21:02.53 In Acts chapter 13 verse 14 Paul and his company 00:21:02.78\00:21:06.16 went to the synagogue at Antioch on the Sabbath. (ONE) 00:21:06.19\00:21:09.65 Acts 13 verses 42-43 says when the Jews left the synagogue, 00:21:09.68\00:21:15.53 the Gentiles asked Paul to come preach 00:21:15.80\00:21:17.55 those same words of Jesus to them the following Sabbath 00:21:17.58\00:21:20.98 and the next Sabbath the whole city came together 00:21:21.01\00:21:23.47 to hear the Word of God. 00:21:23.50\00:21:25.72 That's TWO times. 00:21:25.75\00:21:27.34 In Acts chapter 16 verse 13 00:21:27.37\00:21:29.55 apparently no synagogue was available at Philippi. 00:21:29.58\00:21:32.26 So, instead he met with the believers by the riverside. 00:21:32.29\00:21:36.05 Even though there was no Jewish place of worship, 00:21:36.08\00:21:38.33 Paul still met on Sabbath for Christian worship. 00:21:38.36\00:21:42.37 That's THREE times. 00:21:42.45\00:21:44.18 In Acts 17 verses 1-4 00:21:44.24\00:21:46.23 Paul preached three Sabbath days in a row 00:21:46.46\00:21:48.53 to the folks in Thessalonica. 00:21:48.56\00:21:50.68 Now we're at SIX. 00:21:50.71\00:21:52.33 And when Paul was in Corinth Acts 18:4 says 00:21:52.70\00:21:55.96 he met with the believers "every Sabbath". 00:21:55.99\00:21:58.71 How long was Paul at Corinth? 00:21:58.74\00:22:00.68 Acts 18:11 says he was there for a year and a half 00:22:00.71\00:22:04.27 or 78 Sabbaths in a row. 00:22:04.30\00:22:07.65 This brings us to a running total of 84 Sabbaths 00:22:07.87\00:22:11.69 Paul kept as a Christian! 00:22:11.72\00:22:14.10 Careful study reveals 00:22:14.34\00:22:16.05 that there is not one text in the New Testament 00:22:16.08\00:22:18.47 that abolishes the Ten Commandments. 00:22:18.50\00:22:20.68 There is one that appears to. 00:22:20.71\00:22:22.95 It is found in Colossians chapter 2. 00:22:22.98\00:22:25.08 It says, "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances 00:22:25.11\00:22:28.09 that was against us, 00:22:28.12\00:22:29.24 which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, 00:22:29.27\00:22:32.83 nailing it to his cross." 00:22:32.86\00:22:34.27 Once again we have to let scripture interpret scripture. 00:22:34.30\00:22:37.84 In the Bible it uses the word LAW to mean different things. 00:22:37.87\00:22:41.75 It will say LAW when it is talking about civil commands 00:22:41.78\00:22:44.96 and rules of government. 00:22:44.99\00:22:46.60 It will say LAW when it is talking about health rules 00:22:46.63\00:22:49.48 and stipulations like clean and unclean meat. 00:22:49.51\00:22:52.60 It will say LAW when it is talking about ceremonial rules, 00:22:52.63\00:22:56.50 like bringing a sheep to the tabernacle 00:22:56.53\00:22:58.80 and having its blood taken into the sanctuary. 00:22:58.83\00:23:01.74 And it will say LAW 00:23:01.77\00:23:03.34 when it's talking about the Ten Commandments. 00:23:03.37\00:23:06.19 I have been to Israel, I have met with Jews, 00:23:06.22\00:23:09.32 both Orthodox and Messianic 00:23:09.35\00:23:11.24 and they are absolutely clear 00:23:11.27\00:23:12.67 about these different distinctions. 00:23:12.70\00:23:14.57 So which law was blotted out? Which law is gone? 00:23:14.60\00:23:20.10 To understand Colossians 2:14 00:23:20.38\00:23:22.72 you must compare it with what Moses said 00:23:22.75\00:23:25.11 in Deuteronomy 31:24-26. 00:23:25.14\00:23:27.58 Let's put them on the screen side by side. 00:23:27.86\00:23:30.79 Something was blotted out it but it wasn't the Ten Commandments. 00:23:30.82\00:23:34.87 What was blotted out 00:23:34.90\00:23:36.00 was the handwriting of ordinances that was against us. 00:23:36.03\00:23:41.02 Lets compare these three descriptions with Deuteronomy. 00:23:41.27\00:23:45.11 First notice Moses had done the "handwriting". 00:23:45.14\00:23:48.72 According to Exodus 31:18 00:23:48.75\00:23:50.93 the Ten Commandments were not handwritten 00:23:51.05\00:23:53.26 but placed on stone with the finger of God. 00:23:53.29\00:23:56.20 The laws of Moses were handwritten 00:23:56.23\00:23:58.78 and placed in a book, or a scroll. 00:23:58.81\00:24:01.32 These were not placed inside the ark 00:24:01.35\00:24:03.49 with the Ten Commandments 00:24:03.52\00:24:05.03 but "beside the ark." 00:24:05.06\00:24:06.91 And these handwritings of Moses 00:24:07.05\00:24:09.00 were to be a witness against the people. 00:24:09.03\00:24:12.25 Paul's message to the believers in Colosse 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.93 was the same message to the believers in Ephesus. 00:24:14.96\00:24:18.56 "Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, 00:24:18.59\00:24:22.09 even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; 00:24:22.12\00:24:25.72 for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace." 00:24:25.75\00:24:30.47 Notice again what was done away with. 00:24:30.50\00:24:32.96 "Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, 00:24:32.99\00:24:36.12 even the law of commandments contained in ordinances;" 00:24:36.15\00:24:40.58 What we now know and understand 00:24:40.64\00:24:42.58 is that the Laws contained in ordinances 00:24:42.61\00:24:45.48 or the ceremonial laws were done away with. 00:24:45.51\00:24:48.57 Why? 00:24:48.60\00:24:49.78 Because Jesus was the ceremonial lamb. 00:24:50.12\00:24:53.22 No longer must we offer a burnt offering 00:24:53.25\00:24:55.56 in faith of a coming savior. 00:24:55.59\00:24:57.58 Our Savior came and died for our sins. 00:24:57.61\00:25:00.80 He fulfilled the law containing types of what was to come. 00:25:00.83\00:25:05.38 But Jesus never gave the weekly Sabbath as a type, 00:25:05.41\00:25:08.51 a ceremony of something to come. 00:25:08.54\00:25:11.13 The Sabbath was a weekly reality, 00:25:11.16\00:25:13.55 a weekly time of personal communion with God. 00:25:13.58\00:25:17.38 And did you know 00:25:17.85\00:25:19.02 that we will be keeping the same Sabbath in heaven? 00:25:19.05\00:25:21.80 "For as the new heavens and the new earth, 00:25:21.83\00:25:24.45 which I will make, 00:25:24.48\00:25:25.45 shall remain before me, saith the LORD, 00:25:25.46\00:25:27.43 so shall your seed and your name remain. 00:25:27.46\00:25:29.81 And it shall come to pass, 00:25:29.84\00:25:31.35 that from one new moon to another, 00:25:31.38\00:25:33.17 and from one Sabbath to another, 00:25:33.20\00:25:35.11 shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD." 00:25:35.14\00:25:39.55 You know, I'm looking forward to being in heaven with Jesus 00:25:39.58\00:25:42.60 so I'm starting now to let Jesus be the Lord of my life. 00:25:42.63\00:25:46.27 And if He is asking me to spend the Sabbath with Him there, 00:25:46.30\00:25:49.92 then I certainly don't mind spending the Sabbath 00:25:49.95\00:25:53.18 with Him here. 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.50 The Ten Commandments, 00:25:54.53\00:25:55.94 including the Sabbath are the basis for a loving, 00:25:55.97\00:25:58.88 intimate relationship with the God of creation. 00:25:58.91\00:26:02.56 At the foundation of all quality relationships is time. 00:26:02.59\00:26:07.14 The Sabbath is that weekly time that God has set aside 00:26:07.38\00:26:10.76 for you to spend with Him. 00:26:10.79\00:26:13.35 Don't throw away that precious gift 00:26:13.66\00:26:15.66 and don't be fooled into thinking it doesn't matter. 00:26:15.69\00:26:18.56 To help you learn more about God's true Sabbath 00:26:18.59\00:26:21.89 call or email right now for your free study guide. 00:26:21.92\00:26:26.05 What you learn here will open your eyes. 00:26:26.08\00:26:29.64 Here's the contact information you'll need. 00:26:29.85\00:26:33.53 Fulfilled prophecy 00:27:12.53\00:27:14.09 is really the ultimate foundation for rational faith. 00:27:14.20\00:27:17.80 Did you know 00:27:17.83\00:27:19.00 that the United States of America is prominently portrayed 00:27:19.13\00:27:21.99 in Bible prophecy?
