Welcome back to In Search of the Truth. 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.94 I'm Karen Byrd. 00:00:03.97\00:00:05.32 The camping industry has grown to be quite impressive. 00:00:05.36\00:00:08.77 If you didn't know this then chances are 00:00:08.80\00:00:10.56 you haven't been to Cabela's. 00:00:10.59\00:00:12.74 They only have 12 Retail stores across the country 00:00:12.78\00:00:16.10 but those things are the size of a shopping mall! 00:00:16.13\00:00:18.98 You can actually go fishing, rock climbing or 00:00:19.01\00:00:21.83 do some target practice in the store! 00:00:21.86\00:00:25.12 Some people wonder why anyone would want to go camping. 00:00:25.16\00:00:28.24 Camping means no mattress, no bathroom, 00:00:28.27\00:00:30.48 no refrigerator, and no microwave. 00:00:30.51\00:00:33.25 But you can't experience the close association with friends, 00:00:33.29\00:00:36.73 the stunning vistas, or the fellowship around 00:00:36.76\00:00:39.46 the evening campfire quite like you can when you're camping. 00:00:39.50\00:00:43.69 You just feel more alive in the early morning, 00:00:43.72\00:00:46.20 whether you're camping near civilization where you 00:00:46.24\00:00:48.69 can do fishing or boating, or whether you are 00:00:48.72\00:00:50.95 roughing it along the less traveled trails 00:00:50.98\00:00:53.14 where wild animals still chance upon your path. 00:00:53.18\00:00:56.64 Though one enjoys his time in the great out of doors, even 00:00:56.68\00:01:00.68 the most avid camper is usually very happy to get back home. 00:01:00.71\00:01:04.68 Camping is great for a weekend or even a week or two 00:01:04.71\00:01:07.69 but then one longs for the comfortable kitchen, 00:01:07.72\00:01:10.35 the softer chair, the plush carpet and the warm shower. 00:01:10.39\00:01:15.39 How would you like to go camping 00:01:15.42\00:01:16.73 with millions of people for over a year? 00:01:16.77\00:01:20.31 Today Charles is taking us to the place where God 00:01:20.35\00:01:23.65 actually went camping with over 2 million people. 00:01:23.68\00:01:26.95 Not for a week or even a month. 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.10 He will be taking us to a place where God camped out 00:01:29.14\00:01:31.89 for more than a year. 00:01:31.92\00:01:34.03 From this Mountain in the Sinai peninsula 00:01:34.07\00:01:36.15 God actually spoke in the hearing of all the people. 00:01:36.19\00:01:38.64 He even developed a dramatic play that went on daily. 00:01:38.67\00:01:42.81 This dramatic illustration not only opened to the people 00:01:42.85\00:01:46.92 His plan for their salvation but predicted what His plans were 00:01:46.96\00:01:51.44 for those living in the 21st century. 00:01:51.47\00:01:54.63 Over the next two programs you can join Charles 00:01:54.67\00:01:57.30 in the same search for the truth 00:01:57.33\00:01:59.38 traveled by this former nation of slaves as they went 00:01:59.42\00:02:02.73 camping with God. 00:02:02.76\00:02:05.18 [Text on screen] 00:02:09.60\00:02:15.33 [Text on screen] 00:02:21.79\00:02:27.45 [Text on screen] 00:02:28.56\00:02:31.15 Some three thousand five hundred years ago, 00:02:52.25\00:02:54.69 far away in the land of Egypt, 00:02:54.72\00:02:57.18 about 2 million slaves were preparing to leave. 00:02:57.22\00:03:00.66 The God of creation had convinced the reluctant Pharaoh 00:03:00.70\00:03:03.86 to "let His people go. " 00:03:03.89\00:03:06.55 God led them out through the most inhospitable terrain 00:03:06.58\00:03:09.86 and provided wonderfully for them. 00:03:09.89\00:03:12.30 He provided water from rocks and food from the skies. 00:03:12.34\00:03:16.61 A pillar of cloud led them by day keeping them cool. 00:03:16.64\00:03:19.57 And this pillar changed to a pillar of fire by night 00:03:19.61\00:03:22.53 providing the light and I assume warmth 00:03:22.56\00:03:24.99 on those cold desert nights. 00:03:25.02\00:03:27.36 Finally God brought them to Mt. Sinai where He purposed 00:03:27.40\00:03:31.19 to educate this large group of people about His character, 00:03:31.23\00:03:34.99 about His plan for their complete salvation. 00:03:35.02\00:03:38.08 To help them understand things that they could not see, 00:03:38.12\00:03:41.31 to comprehend things of an eternal nature, 00:03:41.34\00:03:44.14 he created a living illustration 00:03:44.17\00:03:46.14 in the giant sand box of the desert. 00:03:46.18\00:03:49.44 God gave to Moses full instructions for constructing 00:03:49.48\00:03:52.88 a building called the sanctuary, 00:03:52.91\00:03:55.00 which would serve as a dwelling place for God. 00:03:55.04\00:03:58.02 This sanctuary and its services were to demonstrate 00:03:58.06\00:04:01.36 the plan of salvation to this former nation of slaves. 00:04:01.39\00:04:04.72 One thousand years later, an angel told the prophet Daniel 00:04:04.76\00:04:08.06 that the date for the judgment to begin in heaven 00:04:08.09\00:04:10.63 was revealed in the sanctuary service. 00:04:10.66\00:04:12.93 Further, the book of Revelation reveals 00:04:12.97\00:04:15.17 that God's end-time people will announce to the world 00:04:15.21\00:04:19.02 that the heavenly judgment has begun. 00:04:19.05\00:04:21.23 All these points will become clear as you continue your study 00:04:21.27\00:04:24.97 of the three angels' messages of Revelation 14:6-14. 00:04:25.00\00:04:30.15 Today we're going to go back to the desert 00:04:30.18\00:04:32.13 and explore the sanctuary and discover its meaning, 00:04:32.17\00:04:36.05 not just for the sons of Abraham, 00:04:36.08\00:04:38.32 but also for our lives today. 00:04:38.35\00:04:41.00 Moses spent 40 days and nights on the mountain with God. 00:04:41.37\00:04:44.61 While there God asked Moses to have the people 00:04:44.64\00:04:47.76 "Make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. " 00:04:47.80\00:04:51.47 Imagine it, the God of the universe 00:04:51.50\00:04:53.86 wanting to tabernacle, to go camping with us human beings. 00:04:53.90\00:04:58.10 The sanctuary was an elegant, tent-type structure 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.77 15' x 45' based on an 18 inch cubit 00:05:01.80\00:05:05.29 where the supernatural presence of God 00:05:05.32\00:05:08.89 dwelt and special services were conducted. 00:05:08.92\00:05:12.13 The walls were made of upright acacia boards. 00:05:12.17\00:05:15.00 On our recent trip through the desert of Sinai 00:05:15.04\00:05:18.08 we found acacia trees still growing in the desert. 00:05:18.11\00:05:21.12 These boards were to be overlaid in pure gold 00:05:21.15\00:05:24.43 and set up in sockets of silver. 00:05:24.46\00:05:27.23 The roof was made of four layers of coverings: 00:05:27.27\00:05:31.14 linen, goat's hair, ram's skin, and badger skin. 00:05:31.17\00:05:34.97 It had two rooms: the holy place and the most holy place. 00:05:35.01\00:05:39.80 A thick, heavy veil or curtain separated the two rooms. 00:05:39.83\00:05:45.22 The courtyard area around the sanctuary was 75' x 150'. 00:05:45.26\00:05:50.62 It was fenced with fine linen cloth supported 00:05:50.65\00:05:53.70 by 60 pillars of brass. 00:05:53.73\00:05:55.99 And what did God expect His people to learn 00:05:56.03\00:05:58.47 from the sanctuary? 00:05:58.50\00:06:00.08 The same things that we can learn. 00:06:00.11\00:06:02.21 We can learn about Him, His plans and the way He works 00:06:02.25\00:06:06.11 in the affairs of men. 00:06:06.14\00:06:08.36 Psalms 77:13 tells us, 00:06:08.39\00:06:10.60 "Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: 00:06:10.63\00:06:14.10 And who is so great a God as our God?" 00:06:14.13\00:06:17.59 God's way, His plan of salvation, is revealed 00:06:17.62\00:06:21.21 in the earthly sanctuary. 00:06:21.24\00:06:23.19 Even future events of judgment are prophesied 00:06:23.23\00:06:26.71 in the types and services the Israelites 00:06:26.74\00:06:29.61 were invited to participate in. 00:06:29.64\00:06:31.92 In fact, did you know that the Bible teaches that everything 00:06:31.96\00:06:36.09 in the sanctuary or connected with its services was a symbol 00:06:36.12\00:06:40.22 of something Jesus would do in saving us? 00:06:40.25\00:06:43.63 This means that we cannot fully comprehend the plan of salvation 00:06:43.67\00:06:47.41 until we understand the symbolism 00:06:47.44\00:06:49.97 connected with the sanctuary. 00:06:50.00\00:06:52.67 It was important to God that mankind would get 00:06:52.71\00:06:56.01 the correct picture of who He is and what His plans are 00:06:56.05\00:07:00.09 so he admonished Moses, 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.48 "See... that thou make all things according to the pattern 00:07:02.52\00:07:06.69 showed to thee in the mount. " 00:07:06.72\00:07:09.40 The sanctuary blueprints and the full specifications 00:07:09.44\00:07:12.68 for its construction were given to Moses by God. 00:07:12.72\00:07:15.89 And here is an interesting point that we should not miss. 00:07:15.93\00:07:20.10 The sanctuary on earth was a copy of the sanctuary in heaven. 00:07:20.14\00:07:24.57 Jesus acts as the High Priest in that sanctuary as our minister. 00:07:24.60\00:07:29.00 "We have such an high priest," Paul tells us, 00:07:29.03\00:07:31.67 "who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty 00:07:31.71\00:07:35.26 in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, 00:07:35.29\00:07:38.80 of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. " 00:07:38.84\00:07:44.29 All this serves as "[an] example and shadow of heavenly things. " 00:07:44.32\00:07:49.74 Remember, Moses' desert sanctuary was a copy 00:07:49.77\00:07:54.17 of the original sanctuary in heaven. 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.88 Let's take a tour of this ancient structure 00:07:56.92\00:08:00.03 and see if there are any lessons for us today. 00:08:00.07\00:08:02.86 As you enter the courtyard of the sanctuary, 00:08:02.89\00:08:05.61 the first thing you would see is the altar of burnt offerings 00:08:05.65\00:08:08.90 where animals were sacrificed. 00:08:08.93\00:08:11.56 This altar represented Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice. 00:08:11.60\00:08:16.83 Next you'd find the laver, located between the altar 00:08:17.21\00:08:19.98 and the entrance of the sanctuary. 00:08:20.01\00:08:22.08 This large washbasin was made of brass. 00:08:22.12\00:08:24.80 Here, priests washed their hands and feet 00:08:24.84\00:08:27.45 before offering a sacrifice or entering the sanctuary. 00:08:27.49\00:08:32.11 The water represented cleansing from sin, or the new birth. 00:08:32.15\00:08:36.19 Leaving the temple courtyard we next visit the holy place. 00:08:36.23\00:08:40.24 What furniture would you find there? 00:08:40.27\00:08:42.39 First, on the right you'd find the table of shewbread. 00:08:42.43\00:08:46.17 This represents Jesus, the living bread. 00:08:46.20\00:08:49.78 On the left you'd see the seven-branch 00:08:50.17\00:08:51.86 candlestick or menorah. 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.78 This oil lamp was kept burning night and day 00:08:53.82\00:08:56.89 and represents Jesus, the light of the world. 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.93 The Oil represented the Holy Spirit that Jesus sends 00:08:59.97\00:09:03.17 to all those who believe in Him 00:09:03.20\00:09:04.74 and receive the gift of repentance and are baptized. 00:09:04.78\00:09:08.57 Last, you'd find the altar of incense standing just before 00:09:08.61\00:09:12.36 the curtain separating the holy place from the most holy. 00:09:12.39\00:09:16.11 The altar represented the prayers of God's people 00:09:16.14\00:09:19.03 and the work of our High Priest, Jesus, in praying for us. 00:09:19.07\00:09:23.91 The only piece of furniture in the most Holy Place 00:09:24.31\00:09:26.80 is the Ark of the Covenant. 00:09:26.83\00:09:29.36 This box, or chest also made of acacia wood 00:09:29.40\00:09:31.98 and overlaid with gold was the center 00:09:32.01\00:09:34.12 of this whole symbolic training tool in the wilderness. 00:09:34.15\00:09:37.61 Symbolized here, on top of the chest and between the two angels 00:09:37.65\00:09:41.49 was his throne in Heaven. 00:09:41.52\00:09:44.31 What work is Jesus doing for us beyond the veil? 00:09:44.35\00:09:48.03 Let's look into the most holy place and see. 00:09:48.06\00:09:51.67 There are two things that we should notice about this box 00:09:51.71\00:09:54.60 in the most holy of the sanctuary. 00:09:54.63\00:09:56.61 First we should notice what was inside the ark. 00:09:56.65\00:10:00.23 Do you know what was in it? The Ten Suggestions. 00:10:00.26\00:10:03.10 That is what some people try to make of them. 00:10:03.14\00:10:05.86 No, it was the Ten Commandments, which God wrote 00:10:05.90\00:10:08.59 with His own finger on tables of stone 00:10:08.62\00:10:11.31 which His people will always obey. 00:10:11.35\00:10:13.97 This is the law that is as enduring as God himself 00:10:14.01\00:10:17.41 for it is His own character! 00:10:17.44\00:10:19.78 That law cannot be changed and the penalty 00:10:19.82\00:10:22.29 for breaking the law is death. BUT look closer at the box. 00:10:22.33\00:10:27.43 The top of the ark where the angels surround the Shekinah 00:10:27.46\00:10:31.02 or the glory of God's own presence 00:10:31.05\00:10:33.54 is called the mercy seat. 00:10:33.57\00:10:37.11 Mercy would be extended to them through the blood 00:10:37.15\00:10:40.48 which was sprinkled on the mercy seat by the priest. 00:10:40.51\00:10:43.81 The blood of the animal represents Jesus' blood 00:10:43.84\00:10:47.03 that was shed for us to bring us forgiveness of sin. 00:10:47.07\00:10:50.91 Most regular readers of God's word already know that Jesus 00:10:50.95\00:10:54.18 is our only hope of getting out of this world of sin 00:10:54.21\00:10:57.02 and being citizens of the colossal city in space 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.04 that He is preparing for those who love Him. 00:11:00.07\00:11:02.96 But why did animals need to be sacrificed 00:11:02.99\00:11:05.96 in the Old Testament sanctuary services? 00:11:05.99\00:11:08.89 We can begin to understand what the reason is 00:11:08.93\00:11:12.02 by reading from Paul's letter to the Hebrews. 00:11:12.05\00:11:15.07 "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; 00:11:15.11\00:11:20.59 and without the shedding of blood is no remission. " 00:11:20.62\00:11:24.03 The sacrificing of animals was necessary to help 00:11:24.07\00:11:27.41 people understand that without the shedding of Jesus' blood, 00:11:27.45\00:11:32.09 their sins would never be forgiven. 00:11:32.12\00:11:35.11 The ugly, shocking truth is that the punishment for sin 00:11:35.15\00:11:38.35 is eternal death. 00:11:38.38\00:11:40.64 Since all of us have sinned, all of us should die. 00:11:40.67\00:11:44.11 When Adam and Eve sinned, they would have died at once 00:11:44.15\00:11:47.58 if Jesus had not stepped forward and offered 00:11:47.61\00:11:50.22 to give His perfect life as a sacrifice 00:11:50.25\00:11:53.52 to pay the death penalty for all people. 00:11:53.56\00:11:56.76 That's what Jesus was telling us when he said, 00:11:56.80\00:12:00.11 "... this is my blood of the new testament, 00:12:00.14\00:12:03.38 which is shed for many for the remission of sins. " 00:12:03.42\00:12:07.79 After sin, God required the sinner 00:12:07.82\00:12:10.58 to bring an animal sacrifice. 00:12:10.61\00:12:12.85 The sinner was to kill the animal with his own hand. 00:12:12.89\00:12:16.57 It was a bloody and disturbing thing. 00:12:16.60\00:12:19.14 And it indelibly impressed the sinner with the solemn 00:12:19.18\00:12:22.91 reality of sin's awful consequences - eternal death 00:12:22.95\00:12:27.08 and the desperate need of a Savior and a substitute. 00:12:27.12\00:12:30.89 Without a Savior, no one had any hope for salvation. 00:12:30.92\00:12:34.62 The sacrificial system taught, through the symbol of the slain 00:12:34.66\00:12:38.51 animal, that God would give His Son to die for their sins. 00:12:38.55\00:12:42.37 That's why John the Baptist cried out, 00:12:42.40\00:12:44.47 "Behold the lamb of God, 00:12:44.50\00:12:46.63 which taketh away the sin of the world. " 00:12:46.67\00:12:49.78 How were the animals sacrificed in the sanctuary service? 00:12:49.81\00:12:53.56 God's directions read like this... 00:12:53.59\00:12:55.65 "And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; 00:12:55.69\00:12:59.52 and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. " 00:12:59.55\00:13:03.35 "And he shall kill it on the side of the altar 00:13:03.38\00:13:05.99 northward before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, 00:13:06.03\00:13:09.87 shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar. " 00:13:09.90\00:13:13.71 When the sinner brought a sacrificial animal 00:13:13.74\00:13:16.25 to the entrance of the courtyard, a priest joined him. 00:13:16.29\00:13:19.56 The sinner then laid his hands on the animal's head 00:13:19.60\00:13:22.84 and confessed his sins. 00:13:22.87\00:13:25.17 They symbolized the transfer of the sin 00:13:25.21\00:13:28.13 from the sinner to the animal. 00:13:28.16\00:13:30.88 At that point, the sinner was considered innocent 00:13:30.92\00:13:33.57 and the animal guilty. 00:13:33.60\00:13:35.66 Since the animal was now symbolically guilty, 00:13:35.70\00:13:38.23 it had to pay the sins' wage - death. 00:13:38.26\00:13:42.79 The priest then handed him a knife and a basin 00:13:42.83\00:13:45.88 and the sinner was required to take the innocent life 00:13:45.92\00:13:48.60 of the animal with his own hand. 00:13:48.63\00:13:51.09 Each sinner was thus graphically taught 00:13:51.13\00:13:54.15 that sin caused the innocent animal's death 00:13:54.19\00:13:57.14 and that his sin would cause the death of innocent Jesus. 00:13:57.18\00:14:02.37 While there were regular sacrifices 00:14:02.40\00:14:04.21 from individual sinners, there was another sacrifice 00:14:04.25\00:14:07.07 that happened in this symbolic theatre. 00:14:07.10\00:14:09.49 Sometimes the priest offered a sacrifice 00:14:09.52\00:14:11.90 for the whole congregation. 00:14:11.93\00:14:14.19 What animal was it and what did the priest do with the blood? 00:14:14.23\00:14:17.40 We can read about it in Leviticus 4:16-17. 00:14:17.43\00:14:21.84 "And the priest that is anointed shall bring 00:14:21.88\00:14:26.26 of the bullock's blood to the tabernacle of the congregation: 00:14:26.29\00:14:30.09 And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, 00:14:30.12\00:14:33.91 and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, 00:14:33.94\00:14:37.32 even before the veil. " 00:14:37.35\00:14:40.23 When a sacrifice was offered for the sins 00:14:40.27\00:14:42.65 of the entire congregation the blood was taken by the priest, 00:14:42.69\00:14:46.13 who represented Jesus 00:14:46.16\00:14:47.72 into the sanctuary and sprinkled before the veil 00:14:47.76\00:14:51.25 which separated the two rooms. 00:14:51.28\00:14:53.66 The presence of God dwelt on the other side of the veil. 00:14:53.70\00:14:57.34 Thus, the sins of the people were removed and symbolically 00:14:57.38\00:15:00.99 transferred to the sanctuary. 00:15:01.02\00:15:03.83 This ministry of the blood by the priest 00:15:03.87\00:15:07.22 foreshadowed Jesus' present blood-ministry for us in heaven. 00:15:07.26\00:15:11.87 After Jesus died on the cross as our sacrifice for sin, 00:15:11.90\00:15:16.22 He arose and went to heaven as our Priest to present His blood 00:15:16.26\00:15:21.48 in the heavenly sanctuary as the atoning sacrifice. 00:15:21.51\00:15:26.49 The blood ministered by the earthly priest 00:15:26.52\00:15:30.03 represents Jesus applying His blood 00:15:30.06\00:15:33.00 to our record of sins in the sanctuary above, 00:15:33.04\00:15:36.27 showing that they are forgiven 00:15:36.30\00:15:38.99 when we confess them in His name. 00:15:39.03\00:15:41.65 But if the sins of the people are symbolically taken 00:15:41.69\00:15:44.47 into the sanctuary over and over during the year 00:15:44.50\00:15:47.25 it seems that symbolically they would begin to pile up there. 00:15:47.28\00:15:51.28 What happens to them? 00:15:51.31\00:15:52.86 The Prophet Daniel piques our interest 00:15:52.90\00:15:55.18 with this prophetic insight regarding all those sins. 00:15:55.22\00:15:58.87 "And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; 00:15:59.52\00:16:02.91 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. " 00:16:02.94\00:16:05.59 Daniel was talking about a literal cleansing 00:16:05.63\00:16:08.67 in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:16:08.70\00:16:10.90 Can we understand what he was saying 00:16:10.94\00:16:13.01 by looking at the symbolic sanctuary in the wilderness? 00:16:13.05\00:16:14.05 I believe we can. 00:16:14.08\00:16:18.12 Once a year there was a most solemn ceremony. 00:16:18.16\00:16:21.48 You can read about it in Leviticus 23 verses 27-28. 00:16:21.52\00:16:26.24 "And on the tenth day of this seventh month 00:16:26.27\00:16:29.89 there shall be a day of atonement: 00:16:29.92\00:16:32.76 it shall be an holy convocation unto you; 00:16:32.80\00:16:35.66 and ye shall afflict your souls, 00:16:35.69\00:16:36.66 ...ye shall not do any work in that same day: 00:16:38.24\00:16:41.35 for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you 00:16:41.39\00:16:45.96 before the LORD your God. " 00:16:45.99\00:16:48.27 Once each year, on the Day of Atonement, 00:16:48.31\00:16:50.97 a solemn Day of Judgment took place in Israel. 00:16:51.01\00:16:53.90 All were to confess every sin. 00:16:53.93\00:16:56.79 Those who refused were that very day cut off forever 00:16:56.83\00:16:59.78 from the camp of Israel. 00:16:59.81\00:17:01.48 Then two goats were selected: 00:17:01.52\00:17:04.40 One, the Lord's goat; 00:17:04.43\00:17:06.91 the other, the scapegoat, representing Satan. 00:17:06.95\00:17:10.23 The Lord's goat was slain and offered 00:17:10.26\00:17:12.57 for the sins of the people. 00:17:12.60\00:17:13.86 But on this day the blood was taken into the most holy 00:17:13.90\00:17:18.06 and sprinkled upon and before the mercy seat. 00:17:18.09\00:17:22.11 Only on this special judgment day 00:17:22.14\00:17:24.27 did the high priest enter the most holy place 00:17:24.31\00:17:26.84 to meet God at the mercy seat. 00:17:26.87\00:17:30.27 The sprinkled blood, representing Jesus' sacrifice, 00:17:30.31\00:17:33.71 was accepted by God, and confessed sins of the people 00:17:33.75\00:17:37.38 were transferred from the sanctuary to the high priest. 00:17:37.41\00:17:40.96 He then transferred these confessed sins to the scapegoat, 00:17:40.99\00:17:44.51 which was led into the wilderness. 00:17:44.54\00:17:46.51 In this manner the sanctuary was cleansed 00:17:46.55\00:17:48.64 of the sins of the people, which had been transferred there 00:17:48.67\00:17:51.84 by the blood sprinkled before the veil 00:17:51.87\00:17:54.07 and had been accumulating for the year. 00:17:54.10\00:17:56.23 God takes upon Himself the penalty of our bad choices 00:17:56.27\00:18:00.11 as illustrated in the Lord's goat. 00:18:00.14\00:18:02.11 But the scapegoat, which represents Satan, 00:18:02.15\00:18:04.45 bears the blame and final punishment for the sins 00:18:04.49\00:18:07.57 he has led men to commit. 00:18:07.60\00:18:10.20 Remember we said that we cannot fully comprehend 00:18:10.24\00:18:12.69 the plan of salvation until we understand the symbolism 00:18:12.73\00:18:15.96 connected with the sanctuary? 00:18:15.99\00:18:18.49 Then what part in the plan of salvation are we to understand 00:18:18.53\00:18:22.58 in the Day of Atonement? 00:18:22.61\00:18:24.64 What does this service foreshadow? 00:18:24.68\00:18:27.19 The prophet Daniel saw in vision 00:18:27.22\00:18:29.66 the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:18:29.70\00:18:32.21 In Daniel 8:14 he says, "And he said unto me, 00:18:32.25\00:18:35.20 Unto two thousand and three hundred days; 00:18:35.23\00:18:38.57 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. " 00:18:38.60\00:18:41.87 Well we already know what has made the sanctuary dirty. 00:18:41.91\00:18:45.15 It is all the sins that have been carried into the holy place 00:18:45.19\00:18:48.76 symbolically by the priests during the year. 00:18:48.79\00:18:52.17 What does it take to "cleanse" those sins away? 00:18:52.21\00:18:55.52 Paul tells us in Hebrews 9:23, "It was therefore necessary 00:18:55.56\00:19:00.87 that the patterns of the things in the heavens 00:19:00.90\00:19:03.90 should be purified with these. " 00:19:03.93\00:19:06.62 The pattern was the sanctuary in the wilderness. 00:19:06.66\00:19:09.90 That pattern used the Lord's Goat 00:19:09.93\00:19:11.82 to symbolically cleanse the sanctuary. 00:19:11.86\00:19:15.13 Paul finishes, "but the heavenly things themselves 00:19:15.17\00:19:19.15 with better sacrifices than these. " 00:19:19.18\00:19:22.23 The Day of Atonement service 00:19:22.26\00:19:24.06 pointed to the blotting out of sin by the real High Priest 00:19:24.10\00:19:27.85 in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:19:27.88\00:19:29.80 Through His blood applied to those 00:19:29.84\00:19:31.75 written in the book of life, Christ would confirm 00:19:31.79\00:19:34.53 the decisions of His people to serve Him eternally. 00:19:34.56\00:19:38.47 This special judgment day, like Israel's Yom Kippur, 00:19:38.50\00:19:42.36 foreshadowed the final atonement to be made for planet Earth. 00:19:42.40\00:19:46.81 From the yearly type of the ancient Day of Atonement, 00:19:46.84\00:19:50.09 all of humanity is assured that our faithful High Priest, Jesus, 00:19:50.13\00:19:55.22 still mediates in heaven for His people 00:19:55.25\00:19:58.03 and stands ready to blot out all the sins 00:19:58.07\00:20:01.28 of all who exercise faith in His shed blood. 00:20:01.31\00:20:04.45 The final atonement leads to the final judgment, which settles 00:20:04.49\00:20:08.35 the sin question in the life of every individual, 00:20:08.38\00:20:12.33 culminating in either eternal life or death. 00:20:12.36\00:20:16.06 The next time we are together we're going to look 00:20:16.10\00:20:18.01 at the judgment in great detail. 00:20:18.04\00:20:19.87 After all, if we are going to be judged by the God 00:20:19.91\00:20:22.78 of the universe we might as well know 00:20:22.81\00:20:24.97 when that judgment is going to take place, 00:20:25.01\00:20:27.36 and what the standard is by which we are going to be judged 00:20:27.40\00:20:31.09 so there are no surprises. 00:20:31.12\00:20:33.78 Not long ago I stood on the desert floor 00:20:33.82\00:20:36.75 looking up at Mt. Sinai. 00:20:36.78\00:20:39.12 Perhaps it was on this very summit 00:20:39.16\00:20:41.17 that God talked with Moses and gave him the blueprints 00:20:41.21\00:20:44.70 for the tabernacle, the tent from which God was planning 00:20:44.73\00:20:48.19 to teach the people about His plans for them. 00:20:48.22\00:20:52.11 It might have been in the valleys below 00:20:52.14\00:20:54.24 this desolate windswept summit 00:20:54.27\00:20:56.74 that the people worked together to make God's tent, 00:20:56.78\00:20:59.50 the tent in which He would be camping with them 00:20:59.53\00:21:02.22 in their 40 years of desert wanderings. 00:21:02.25\00:21:05.45 What a fantastic God we have to want to tabernacle with us. 00:21:05.49\00:21:10.07 What a personal God who wants us to know Him on a personal level. 00:21:10.10\00:21:14.86 To understand what He did to redeem us 00:21:14.89\00:21:17.87 from the poor choices that we've made. 00:21:17.90\00:21:20.81 Just imagine being one of the privileged ones 00:21:20.85\00:21:23.26 who saw the mountain lit up with the Glory of God, 00:21:23.30\00:21:26.63 being able to hear His voice as He shared 00:21:26.66\00:21:28.96 with mankind the Ten Commandments. 00:21:28.99\00:21:33.49 Here in this austere wasteland of the Sinai peninsula, 00:21:33.53\00:21:38.35 with nothing to distract the mind from the majestic view 00:21:38.38\00:21:41.72 of the mountain enshrouded with the glory of the Savior, 00:21:41.75\00:21:45.48 history records that God began to reveal to a nation 00:21:45.51\00:21:49.23 of ignorant slaves and to the world 00:21:49.26\00:21:52.30 His plan for the redemption of lost mankind. 00:21:52.34\00:21:57.30 We need not offer a Lamb today since Jesus is the Lamb of God 00:21:57.34\00:22:01.37 that takes away the sins of the world, 00:22:01.40\00:22:03.52 but we would be wise to open our Bibles for ourselves 00:22:03.56\00:22:08.36 and begin to read and learn about His plan 00:22:08.39\00:22:11.76 to save us and our families from eternal ruin. 00:22:11.79\00:22:15.03 You may never get to stand on the mountain of God 00:22:15.07\00:22:18.28 in the desert of Sinai, but someday, 00:22:18.31\00:22:21.19 if you choose to accept Jesus as your savior, 00:22:21.23\00:22:23.96 if you trust Him each day to live in you, to will in you, 00:22:24.00\00:22:27.49 to do in you His good pleasure, 00:22:27.52\00:22:30.09 you will get to stand on the mountain of God 00:22:30.13\00:22:32.72 with all those who allow Him to write 00:22:32.75\00:22:35.52 His covenant law in their hearts. 00:22:35.56\00:22:38.30 Someday you can stand with the redeemed from all ages, 00:22:38.89\00:22:42.18 not seeing Him in a cloud on a mountain, 00:22:42.21\00:22:44.67 or in a tent full of symbolism on the valley floor, 00:22:44.71\00:22:48.10 but you can see Him face to face. 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.83 No doubt, camping with God personally 00:22:50.86\00:22:53.53 would be a radical experience. 00:22:53.56\00:22:55.95 But how could that many people survive in the desert? 00:22:55.99\00:22:59.51 According to the story in the book of Exodus 00:22:59.54\00:23:01.44 God provided them with food and water each day. 00:23:01.47\00:23:04.40 The army is familiar with this type of logistics 00:23:04.43\00:23:07.35 and according to the Quartermaster General, 00:23:07.38\00:23:09.78 it is reported that Moses would have to have 00:23:09.81\00:23:12.18 1,500 tons of food each day. 00:23:12.21\00:23:16.34 Logistics would require two freight trains 00:23:16.37\00:23:19.46 each a mile long, to supply that much food. 00:23:19.50\00:23:22.54 The water needed would pose an even larger procurement issue! 00:23:22.58\00:23:26.34 If they only had enough to drink and wash a few dishes, 00:23:26.37\00:23:29.36 it would take 11,000,000 gallons each day. 00:23:29.39\00:23:32.95 To transport that amount of water would require 00:23:32.99\00:23:35.78 another freight train with tank cars stretched out 00:23:35.81\00:23:38.57 for 3 miles, each and every day. 00:23:38.60\00:23:43.05 The same God who looked after the physical needs 00:23:43.09\00:23:45.86 of those desert travelers 00:23:45.89\00:23:47.59 was even more interested in their spiritual needs. 00:23:47.63\00:23:51.35 And that same God is also deeply interested in you. 00:23:51.39\00:23:55.08 Would you like to learn more 00:23:55.11\00:23:56.40 about this giant sandbox illustration 00:23:56.44\00:23:58.70 called the Tabernacle?
