Praise the Lord everyone. Welcome to 00:00:14.18\00:00:17.48 Imperative Life Lessons. 00:00:17.51\00:00:19.35 I'm Pastor Ryan Johnson. 00:00:19.38\00:00:22.22 My notes told me he was 20 years younger than I, 00:00:22.25\00:00:26.12 but as I sat across from him looking into his eyes 00:00:26.15\00:00:30.03 he seemed much, much older. 00:00:30.06\00:00:33.90 Life had been hard, circumstances had been dire, 00:00:33.93\00:00:37.97 choices had been poor, rough and tumble my grandmother 00:00:38.00\00:00:42.04 would have said. As I gripped my Bible and leaned forward 00:00:42.07\00:00:46.88 noting the needle marks on his arms, I thought about Jesus' 00:00:46.91\00:00:52.38 declaration in Luke chapter four verse 18. 00:00:52.41\00:00:55.58 I know it won't be easy I told him. 00:01:15.74\00:01:18.41 At times, it will feel like torture as you recover 00:01:18.44\00:01:22.78 yet with Christ, you can be free. 00:01:22.81\00:01:27.52 But the young man nodded to me and he said my momma, my daddy 00:01:27.72\00:01:33.52 my grandparents, they were all addicts pastor. 00:01:33.56\00:01:37.09 I appreciate your words, but sir, I'm pretty sure I'm cursed. 00:01:37.13\00:01:43.10 How can I be saved when I am cursed? 00:01:43.13\00:01:47.84 Cursed. What does Jesus teach us about that? 00:01:47.87\00:01:53.54 You know what, let's look and find out. 00:01:53.58\00:01:57.18 Father in heaven, we are all cursed, but you are 00:01:57.21\00:02:01.68 the great emancipator, be with us as we study. 00:02:01.72\00:02:04.89 In thy name we pray. Amen and amen. 00:02:04.92\00:02:08.12 It was the time when kings go into battle according to 00:02:08.16\00:02:12.06 II Samuel chapter 11 and verse one. 00:02:12.09\00:02:15.26 The winter weather in the region was cold and rainy, and thus 00:02:15.30\00:02:20.07 unsuitable for chariot wheels and unsuitable for 00:02:20.10\00:02:23.77 hungry soldiers so they would mostly wait, and as 00:02:23.81\00:02:26.94 spring approached the military campaigns would commence 00:02:26.98\00:02:30.38 and kings would go to war. 00:02:30.41\00:02:32.91 And when the previous chapter, chapter 10, we see King David 00:02:32.95\00:02:37.79 going to battle with his soldiers, but as we settle into 00:02:37.82\00:02:42.22 the fighting season of II Samuel chapter 11, right there 00:02:42.26\00:02:47.40 at verse one, look at what the Bible says. It says... 00:02:47.43\00:02:50.63 I've heard it stated that the trouble beginning in the 00:03:07.12\00:03:10.69 next verse stems from the fact that King David of Israel 00:03:10.72\00:03:15.46 stayed home rather than going to fight for his Lord. 00:03:15.49\00:03:20.40 Verse two... 00:03:20.43\00:03:22.23 David is walking on the roof of his home when in the distance 00:04:11.15\00:04:15.28 he encounters a woman bathing. 00:04:15.32\00:04:16.95 Now there are two words used in this verse that indicate 00:04:16.99\00:04:20.89 what happens with David's eyes. 00:04:20.92\00:04:22.82 The first one is that he saw, he sees a woman 00:04:22.86\00:04:27.26 but then the verse continues to say the woman is beautiful 00:04:27.30\00:04:31.23 to look upon. 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.54 Hey, you can't always help what you see, 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.04 but what you look at can certainly be controlled. 00:04:36.07\00:04:40.08 David went from seeing to looking and then to inquiring 00:04:40.11\00:04:45.18 after the woman and verse three states... 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.78 The woman is... 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.65 Now, textual evidence suggests that David may have been friends 00:04:52.92\00:04:57.63 with this woman's father. 00:04:57.66\00:04:59.33 But it's super clear in the text that he's friends with 00:04:59.36\00:05:03.37 her husband, Uriah the Hittite. 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.63 Don't believe me? Keep your finger in II Samuel 11 and turn 00:05:05.67\00:05:10.64 over to II Samuel 23... 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.68 In this chapter, David is close to death and as part of 00:05:13.71\00:05:18.71 the formal process of a dying king, they list his brothers 00:05:18.75\00:05:22.82 in arms, all of his fighting companions 00:05:22.85\00:05:26.09 Let's read verse eight... It says... 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.46 and 36 other men are listed as David's mighty men. 00:06:21.68\00:06:25.91 but look at the very last verse of chapter 23, look at this. 00:06:25.95\00:06:30.72 Where a 37th man is listed... 00:06:30.75\00:06:35.12 Verse 39... 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.03 Uriah was a loyal friend, yet there on the rooftop 00:06:43.20\00:06:48.14 David sees his wife and coveting her, he takes her. 00:06:48.17\00:06:54.14 The 10th Commandment states "Thou shalt not covet." 00:06:54.18\00:06:59.55 is the one commandment that tells us what to think 00:06:59.58\00:07:03.05 for God knows what evil thoughts can lead to and coveting 00:07:03.08\00:07:08.76 lead David to betray his friends and his family. 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.96 And was the woman Bathsheba a willing participant? 00:07:12.99\00:07:17.50 We may never know, but one has to imagine that 00:07:17.53\00:07:20.74 when the king himself called for her, it may have seemed 00:07:20.77\00:07:25.24 unwise or even unsafe to decline, I don't know. 00:07:25.27\00:07:28.94 But let's return to II Samuel chapter 11 and verse five. 00:07:28.98\00:07:34.65 Uh oh. 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.45 Ohh, now there is real trouble. For by the mosaic law 00:07:46.13\00:07:50.23 adultery is punishable by death. 00:07:50.27\00:07:54.00 And here are two adulterers but believe it or not 00:07:54.04\00:07:57.21 there may even be a bigger issue here, and to appreciate it 00:07:57.24\00:08:02.78 you gotta think like an ancient Middle Eastern person. 00:08:02.84\00:08:06.41 See, their value system was very different than ours is 00:08:06.45\00:08:09.58 in our modern hierarchy of values we place 00:08:09.62\00:08:13.39 self-preservation and success above everything else 00:08:13.42\00:08:16.89 our own person comes first and then we may have our 00:08:16.93\00:08:20.96 country, then community, but in ancient Palestine, the top 00:08:21.00\00:08:25.90 values were honor, hospitality, the community, family, self... 00:08:25.93\00:08:31.84 I like to joke that a game show such as Who Wants to be 00:08:31.87\00:08:36.14 a Millionaire might have been very unpopular back then 00:08:36.18\00:08:40.22 because they would rather have honor among the brethren. 00:08:40.25\00:08:43.62 Greed and selfishness were frowned upon. 00:08:43.65\00:08:46.86 When the woman Bathsheba became pregnant 00:08:46.89\00:08:50.26 Davis's honor as king was at risk for surely all would know 00:08:50.29\00:08:55.73 that the reclining king had betrayed a friend, 00:08:55.76\00:08:59.60 a national hero, and when we realize this, we then see 00:08:59.63\00:09:04.64 that everything that follows in this story is David's 00:09:04.67\00:09:08.68 attempt to restore his own honor. 00:09:08.71\00:09:12.55 II Samuel chapter 11 states that David called Uriah 00:09:12.58\00:09:18.72 from the battlefield under vague pretenses and tried to 00:09:18.75\00:09:23.06 get Uriah to go home to his wife so that the baby 00:09:23.09\00:09:26.73 might appear to be Uriah's and David's own honor 00:09:26.76\00:09:30.03 might be restored, but Uriah refuses. 00:09:30.07\00:09:33.40 Look at verse 10... 00:09:33.44\00:09:34.84 verse 11... 00:09:48.35\00:09:49.68 You know, even today, some soldiers do not wish to leave 00:10:13.51\00:10:18.01 the field of battle or to be given special accommodations 00:10:18.05\00:10:21.95 while their brothers and sisters are still out there fighting 00:10:21.98\00:10:24.95 for their lives and country. 00:10:24.99\00:10:26.89 Sometimes war survivors don't enjoy the little pleasurers 00:10:26.92\00:10:31.46 of life because it feels dishonorable toward their 00:10:31.49\00:10:34.70 brothers and sisters who were not fortunate enough 00:10:34.73\00:10:37.87 to survive. And Uriah is such a soldier and one imagines 00:10:37.90\00:10:43.30 that Uriah's honorable nature is a slap in the face 00:10:43.34\00:10:47.91 of the dishonorable king. 00:10:47.94\00:10:51.98 Verse 12... Verse 13... 00:10:52.01\00:10:53.35 Even after getting Uriah drunk and full, David could not get 00:11:49.27\00:11:53.74 him to go and lie with his wife and this may have infuriated 00:11:53.78\00:11:58.08 the king, who then felt justified in doing whatever he 00:11:58.11\00:12:02.45 needed to do so that as kingly honor might be restored. 00:12:02.48\00:12:06.29 So verse 14 tells us that David sends Uriah back to the 00:12:06.32\00:12:11.29 battlefield with a letter for Joab his commanding officer 00:12:11.33\00:12:15.20 and this letter instructs the commanding officer to put Uriah 00:12:15.23\00:12:19.90 on the front lines close to the siege-wall so Uriah could be 00:12:19.93\00:12:24.54 killed. Let's take a moment to appreciate how messed up 00:12:24.57\00:12:29.54 it is that Uriah is forced to carry his own death warrant. 00:12:29.58\00:12:34.65 The awful irony almost forces a question to the forefront. 00:12:34.68\00:12:41.32 Though the Bible gives no specific indication, 00:12:41.36\00:12:45.93 one has to wonder, did he know? Did Uriah choose valor 00:12:45.96\00:12:52.87 as his vindication? The amazing thing is that both Uriah 00:12:52.90\00:12:57.54 and David are going to be in heaven. 00:12:57.57\00:12:59.84 The victor and the perpetrator and we can ask them 00:12:59.87\00:13:03.55 for ourselves, I plan to. But David has Uriah killed to 00:13:03.58\00:13:09.42 protect his dingy honor. 00:13:09.48\00:13:11.55 And then read verse 26, it says... 00:13:11.59\00:13:14.42 Verse 27... 00:13:22.06\00:13:23.40 This is the situation created by the cowardly covetous king 00:13:37.31\00:13:43.32 and God, being displeased, sends His prophet, whose name is 00:13:43.35\00:13:50.53 Nathan to David. II Samuel chapter 12 verse one, look at 00:13:50.56\00:13:55.83 this. The story of a wealthy man who robbed a poor man of the 00:15:02.36\00:15:08.64 only thing he loved made David angry. 00:15:08.67\00:15:12.47 Whoever did this dishonorable thing is worthy of death 00:15:12.51\00:15:15.91 he proclaims, but in verse seven... 00:15:15.94\00:15:18.51 The story's about you, David and everyone knows of 00:15:23.72\00:15:27.26 your dishonor. Verse nine. 00:15:27.29\00:15:30.36 As the anointed king of Israel David has misrepresented God 00:15:48.21\00:15:54.58 and now, it's leaning to the word friends, notice this 00:15:54.62\00:16:00.19 next part, because here like Adam and Eve experienced 00:16:00.22\00:16:04.43 in the garden, David will hear the pronouncement, 00:16:04.46\00:16:08.66 the stated result of his sin. Look at this. 00:16:08.70\00:16:13.77 Verse 10. 00:16:13.80\00:16:15.84 There are a number of places in the text where David endures 00:16:32.42\00:16:36.29 curses and pronouncements of doom. But this one which 00:16:36.32\00:16:41.46 continues through verse 11 is special because it's so crisp 00:16:41.50\00:16:45.93 so easy to understand and it's brought on by 00:16:45.97\00:16:50.11 David's own actions, David cursed himself. 00:16:50.14\00:16:55.18 You know what, let's look at it, let's look at it. 00:16:55.21\00:16:58.15 The sword, the prophet Christ shall never leave your house 00:16:58.18\00:17:03.72 What's a sword, a sword is a weapon, it is a cutting blade 00:17:03.75\00:17:08.92 designed to impale people, it indicates fighting, 00:17:08.96\00:17:12.49 it indicates war and blood. David says in II Samuel 00:17:12.53\00:17:16.46 chapter 11, and verse 25... 00:17:16.50\00:17:18.60 But the sword is also a mentality isn't it? 00:17:22.10\00:17:24.64 Yes, it is. David has introduced the mentality of the sword 00:17:24.67\00:17:29.74 of violence to achieve one's desires into His house. 00:17:29.78\00:17:33.62 And the prophet says that it will never depart. 00:17:33.65\00:17:38.32 That's a sword, okay, what's a house? 00:17:38.35\00:17:41.02 Well, in Job chapter one, a servant tells Job in verse 19, 00:17:41.06\00:17:47.10 He says... 00:17:47.13\00:17:48.46 Is that what is meant by a house? 00:18:00.64\00:18:04.78 A building, the sword shall never leave this building. 00:18:04.81\00:18:09.45 ahh, it doesn't feel right does it? 00:18:09.48\00:18:11.72 Let's see another example shall we? 00:18:11.75\00:18:15.16 This time from Exodus, chapter 40, where it describes how 00:18:15.19\00:18:20.40 Jehovah led his people, look at verse 38, it says... 00:18:20.43\00:18:24.80 House of Israel, Israel was a man, formerly Jacob 00:18:38.58\00:18:46.55 and house of the Hebrew route bet refers to his children. 00:18:46.59\00:18:53.06 His offspring, the offspring of Jacob, Israel, are the house 00:18:53.09\00:18:59.97 or children of Israel. 00:19:00.00\00:19:02.94 Nathan says, the sword shall never leave your house, David. 00:19:02.97\00:19:08.34 Violence and the mindset of violence and that did happen, 00:19:08.38\00:19:12.98 oh yes, it happened. The curse upon the offspring 00:19:13.01\00:19:17.05 The House of David. 00:19:17.09\00:19:19.09 But turn with me to Isaiah chapter 11, I'm going to read 00:19:19.12\00:19:28.16 verses one and two, and listen as Isaiah prophecies about 00:19:28.20\00:19:33.10 the Messiah. 00:19:33.13\00:19:34.47 Amen! I like it, but a branch, a root, yes, 00:20:19.51\00:20:26.49 see Isaiah is using the analogy of a family tree to state 00:20:26.52\00:20:32.63 that the Messiah would be a descendant of Jesse. 00:20:32.66\00:20:36.77 Okay, who is Jesse? Yishai in the Hebrew 00:20:36.80\00:20:42.87 well, let's look, let's look at the book of Ruth 00:20:42.90\00:20:47.01 chapter four, and verse 16, who's Jesse, look at this. 00:20:47.04\00:20:50.51 Where Ruth just had a baby it says... 00:20:50.55\00:20:54.45 Jesse was David's father, so, if the Messiah is of the line or 00:21:17.04\00:21:23.95 offspring of Jesse, then the Messiah is a descendant of 00:21:23.98\00:21:28.85 David. The children of David, the house of David. 00:21:28.88\00:21:32.99 You're still not convinced? Okay, let's look at what Jesus 00:21:33.02\00:21:37.79 himself says in Revelation chapter 22, 00:21:37.83\00:21:41.76 let's look at verse 16. 00:21:41.80\00:21:43.97 Jesus is of the house of David but if the curse was upon 00:21:58.08\00:22:04.45 David's house, was Christ born under a curse? 00:22:04.49\00:22:09.76 Did He come to earth and in addition to everything, He 00:22:09.79\00:22:14.26 endured, the curse of humanities sins, was He also specially 00:22:14.30\00:22:19.50 effected by belingering results of David's sin? 00:22:19.53\00:22:24.01 Because He was right in the family line, 00:22:24.04\00:22:26.78 the shadow of the sword, the mentality of the sword, 00:22:26.81\00:22:31.65 did violence chase Jesus? was the mindset of violence around 00:22:31.68\00:22:36.89 Jesus?
