comes down to it; war in

There is controversy over
God's name, His character,

and so this is an
overarching theme.

And I think that there
is material in Psalm 46

that kind of, at least, sheds
some light on what is going on.

It's maybe not obvious,
but let's take a look at it,

Psalm 46, beginning in verse 8.

It says, "Come, behold
the works of the Lord."

And of course
"Lord" is all caps.

That's Yahweh; it's His name.
00:02:20.30\00:02:22.90
"Behold the works of the Lord,
how He has brought desolations

on the earth." Wait a
second. Wait a second.

He brought
desolations on the earth?

Who really did
it? Who really did it?

And here's what
I find interesting,

and we can't unpack this today,

you'll never get through this

somehow God owns the world,

At the end, who handles the
final destruction of the wicked?

who caused wickedness,

but God Himself
steps up to the plate:

universe. I'm going to do this."

And I can admire a God
who does something like that.

We talked about
Old Yeller-- you know,

eventually you're going
to have to deal with it,

and God deals with it.

Here in verse 8,
we have a recognition

that the world is
painful, it's broken,

and that God allowed it.

That's a major part of
the great controversy theme.

God has let us go our own
way and reap the consequences

of what it is that we did.

So this helps me in verse 8
understand it's our decision

to make the world this
way, but God allowed it,

and for our instruction,

from it and we come back to Him.

some ownership in this world,

as we've made this place,

God didn't abandon us in this.

We made it bad. He stays with us

absorbed and wrapped up

in what happens to

something that He didn't start?

On a human philosophy
level-- we've talked about this

if I just want to be rational
without what God reveals,

I don't like the idea

But we're told in
the "Great Controversy,"

and shatters the spear;

He burns the
chariots with fire."

Suddenly I have the music
playing from "Chariots of Fire"

in my--anyway,
God's hand is in warfare.

That's a troublesome
thought, but He's present there.

So now when you
get to Daniel 7--

we looked at this
already-- we have the nations.

Israel thinks of
themselves as an island

of God's mercy and
grace in a sea of the nations.

The nations are
self-directed, selfish, sinful,
00:05:49.01\00:05:53.62
paradise-replacement nations.
00:05:53.65\00:05:55.82
That's what they are: "We
will bring paradise on our own.

I'll take charge of this."

The water is whipped up.

These are one nation
after another going to war.

Does God cause
them to go to war?

No, I can't see
God authoring war.

Is His hand on it?

It's going to be Babylon,

Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, the
divided Western Roman Empire,

the second coming of Christ.

He's got His hand
there. He allows this to go on.

And we get a lot of
light on what's going on.

That happens in Ezekiel.

I don't know that I

but Ezekiel opens
with Ezekiel in captivity.

The world looks like it
has ended. "Where is God?

told they would go to Babylon

And how does that scene open?

It looks like chaos.

A whirlwind is
not an orderly thing.

He compares what he
sees to a whirlwind.

And if you're in, like,
hurricane or tornado alley,

you've seen a whirlwind.

It looks like chaos,
and he's having trouble.

There's thunder and lightning,
and then he sees the creatures.

And by the end of
chapter 1, he looks up,

and there's a
throne above the chaos.

It's seated up-- God
is sitting on His throne.

He's allowing us to run our
own course, do our own things.

He's allowing the nations to
express themselves all the way

to the logical end zone of
human systems of government,

but He never leaves. The
throne is still above it.

At some point He's
going to blow the whistle

gives up 100% control.

it. We would fall apart.

There's still the guiding hand.

I mean, in prophecy, you
see a situation where the angels

are holding back the winds
of the earth in the last days.

He stops it from
getting out of control

so that the plan
of salvation plays out

without violating our free will.

There's an hour's
worth of discussion.

How does He do
that? I don't know.

like this sometimes.

got lots of freedom of choice,

but it's going to come
out the end at the bottom

kingdom that will never fail,

Babylonians had an empire--

the first truly international
empire is the Persians.

"The cities are laid in
ruins before His fierce anger."

In other words, human
government ran its course.

Now God says, "Everybody,"
again, "out of the pool,

"I'm draining it.
00:11:15.20\00:11:16.60
Time for new water.
It's time for my kingdom."

"For thus says the
LORD, 'The whole land shall be

the day, is the allocation
