¤¤¤ 00:00:00.33\00:00:04.30 ¤¤¤ 00:00:11.97\00:00:13.94 >>Eric Flickinger: Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.98\00:00:15.34 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:15.38\00:00:17.18 Glad that you could join us today. 00:00:17.21\00:00:18.75 We are taking a journey through the prophecies of the Bible, 00:00:18.78\00:00:23.92 learning how to study them so that we end up 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.29 understanding them correctly rather than incorrectly. 00:00:26.32\00:00:29.69 And this week we are on lesson number 8. 00:00:29.72\00:00:32.46 It is "In the Psalms." This is part 1 of 2. 00:00:32.49\00:00:35.53 We're going to be looking at more of this next week. 00:00:35.56\00:00:38.47 But this week we're delving 00:00:38.50\00:00:39.83 into the Psalms and seeing 00:00:39.87\00:00:41.17 how they can help us understand the prophecies of the Bible. 00:00:41.20\00:00:44.27 As we do so, let's begin with prayer. 00:00:44.31\00:00:46.81 Father, we're grateful to be here again today. 00:00:46.84\00:00:48.78 We're glad that You have brought us together 00:00:48.81\00:00:50.31 and brought us to this time and place 00:00:50.35\00:00:52.38 to study Your Word and especially the Psalms 00:00:52.41\00:00:55.38 so we can better understand the times in which we live 00:00:55.42\00:00:58.15 and the things which are shortly to come to pass 00:00:58.19\00:01:00.16 in this world. We ask that You'll bless our time together, 00:01:00.19\00:01:02.72 and we thank You, in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:02.76\00:01:04.86 >>Shawn Boonstra: Amen. 00:01:04.89\00:01:06.19 >>Eric: We are also grateful to have with us 00:01:06.23\00:01:07.56 the author of this quarter's "Sabbath School" lesson, 00:01:07.60\00:01:09.76 Pastor Shawn Boonstra. 00:01:09.80\00:01:11.10 Shawn, good to have you here again. 00:01:11.13\00:01:12.57 >>Shawn: Anonymous off-screen "amen." 00:01:12.60\00:01:13.97 >>Eric: That's right. 00:01:14.00\00:01:15.30 I think by now they recognize the tone of voice. 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.14 They know who is here. 00:01:17.17\00:01:18.74 We still haven't decided to kick you off yet, 00:01:18.77\00:01:21.11 so there's been some good content here, 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.45 and we'll see what next week looks like. 00:01:23.48\00:01:25.11 But this week, I think we're going to be all right. 00:01:25.15\00:01:27.38 "In the Psalms," part number 1. 00:01:27.42\00:01:29.38 So we're looking at the book of Psalms and how they help us, 00:01:29.42\00:01:32.39 how the Psalms help us to understand the prophecies 00:01:32.42\00:01:34.42 found in Revelation. 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.22 And in this week, we're going through different psalms 00:01:36.26\00:01:38.19 and seeing elements of that. >>Shawn: Right. 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.76 >>Eric: Let's start with Psalm 122-- 00:01:41.80\00:01:44.87 >>Shawn: Right, the one that's in the quarterly. 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.20 >>Eric: ...and dive right in. >>Shawn: This was-- 00:01:46.23\00:01:48.20 I know I had some friends proofread the quarterly 00:01:48.24\00:01:51.07 and stuff for me, and they said this is 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.41 one of their favorite parts. 00:01:52.44\00:01:53.88 So many people don't think of the Psalms 00:01:53.91\00:01:55.74 as prophetic books. 00:01:55.78\00:01:57.08 Okay, we've got the poetry, and then we've got Daniel, 00:01:57.11\00:01:59.48 and we've got Revelation. Ehhh... 00:01:59.51\00:02:02.45 You can't separate the Bible into silos quite so neatly, 00:02:02.48\00:02:05.99 and there's a lot of material in the Psalms 00:02:06.02\00:02:08.46 that if Revelation, for example, 00:02:08.49\00:02:10.73 isn't drawing on it, it at least casts light 00:02:10.76\00:02:13.86 on what Revelation's talking about. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.46 John didn't write in a vacuum, right? 00:02:15.50\00:02:17.17 John wrote with these scriptures 00:02:17.20\00:02:18.87 in his heart and always drawing on the content 00:02:18.90\00:02:22.00 God had already revealed to him and then adding new insights. 00:02:22.04\00:02:25.37 So yeah, Psalm 122. It's one of the "Psalms of Ascent." 00:02:25.41\00:02:29.34 There are a bunch of these from Psalm 120 onward, 00:02:29.38\00:02:32.65 and these are literally sung as they're going 00:02:32.68\00:02:35.32 into the temple. So that should tell us a lot. 00:02:35.35\00:02:38.85 The sanctuary is a huge theme in Bible prophecy. 00:02:38.89\00:02:42.79 And one of the reasons I like this, of course, 00:02:42.82\00:02:46.33 the temple is on Mount Zion. That's where it is, 00:02:46.36\00:02:49.46 the Temple Mount, we now call it, 00:02:49.50\00:02:51.20 where the temple used to be. 00:02:51.23\00:02:53.07 And we find that Temple Mount showing up in Revelation 14, 00:02:53.10\00:02:56.40 which is that central focal point of Revelation. 00:02:56.44\00:02:59.57 The center chapters, 12, 13, and 14, 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.84 are really the focus of the action. 00:03:01.88\00:03:03.31 It's a chiastic structure that puts 00:03:03.35\00:03:05.65 the biggest emphasis in the middle, just about. 00:03:05.68\00:03:09.35 And so we find God's people on Mount Zion, the Father's name-- 00:03:09.38\00:03:12.35 we already know that's His character-- 00:03:12.39\00:03:13.86 written in their foreheads. They're standing there 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.62 with the Lamb. That's their only ticket of access 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.83 to that mountain. And then as we looked earlier, 00:03:18.86\00:03:21.43 they're also spreading the message to the world, 00:03:21.46\00:03:23.06 much the way that the cherubims were singing 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.97 God's glory and sharing His message in Revelation, 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.60 chapters 4 and 5. So this is one of those. 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.60 And I thought, well, why don't we take a look at it? 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.61 And let's start in Psalm 122, right at the head of the thing. 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.25 It's only about nine verses--not about, 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.51 it's exactly nine verses long. 00:03:39.55\00:03:42.12 "I was glad when they said to me, 00:03:42.15\00:03:44.29 'Let us go [into] the house of the Lord!'" 00:03:44.32\00:03:47.66 I have to pause there because 00:03:47.69\00:03:49.12 the house of the Lord is up on Mount Zion. 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.16 And it tells me something: 00:03:51.19\00:03:52.49 Going into God's presence is an occasion for joy. 00:03:52.53\00:03:57.53 And that should speak volumes if we're terrified of God. 00:03:57.57\00:04:02.34 The idea that He lifts the veil, lets us in, 00:04:02.37\00:04:05.24 brings us into His presence. 00:04:05.27\00:04:06.81 Yeah, if we don't have Jesus, you ought to be terrified. 00:04:06.84\00:04:10.05 You ought to be, "Woe am I, I'm a man of unclean lips." 00:04:10.08\00:04:13.11 But David, who has clearly-- he wrote this one. 00:04:13.15\00:04:16.89 He's clearly sinned. 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.72 He finds going into God's presence...joy. Joy. 00:04:18.75\00:04:23.63 If your study of the sanctuary and prophecy isn't joyful, 00:04:23.66\00:04:27.96 you might be reading it wrong. 00:04:28.00\00:04:31.63 Verse 2: "Our feet have been standing within your gates, 00:04:31.67\00:04:34.77 O Jerusalem!" 00:04:34.80\00:04:36.71 And I guess here what I'm looking at 00:04:36.74\00:04:39.81 is he's looking around. I picture David like this. 00:04:39.84\00:04:43.21 He's looking around. "I can't believe where I am. 00:04:43.24\00:04:44.78 I'm in Jerusalem. Look where I get to be." 00:04:44.81\00:04:48.45 And I have to ask myself, 00:04:48.48\00:04:49.78 do I feel that way about the family of God? 00:04:49.82\00:04:51.62 Do I feel that way about being 00:04:51.65\00:04:53.12 part of the last-day remnant movement? 00:04:53.15\00:04:54.82 Do I look around saying, "What am I doing here? 00:04:54.86\00:04:58.13 Look where I am. I can't believe it." 00:04:58.16\00:05:00.86 I don't know how you feel, but I still have a little bit 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.70 of imposter syndrome. I'm a preacher, and it's like, 00:05:02.73\00:05:04.93 who in the world put me in this job? 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.10 I don't know if that's true for you. 00:05:07.14\00:05:08.44 >>Eric: Oh, absolutely, absolutely. 00:05:08.47\00:05:11.44 There's so many places that you and I could be in our lives 00:05:11.47\00:05:15.04 in the world, and God has us right here 00:05:15.08\00:05:16.91 in the heart of what's going on, you know, 00:05:16.95\00:05:19.28 in the midst of the activity, the significant activity 00:05:19.31\00:05:22.68 at the end of earth's history, 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.35 and we get to be a part of it. 00:05:24.39\00:05:25.79 >>Shawn: It pictures us on Mount Zion with Jesus. 00:05:25.82\00:05:29.02 I don't belong there, and I know I don't. 00:05:29.06\00:05:31.66 Verse 3 says, "Jerusalem-- built as a city 00:05:31.69\00:05:34.13 "that is bound firmly together, 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.80 to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord"-- 00:05:35.83\00:05:39.13 that still shows up in Revelation; 00:05:39.17\00:05:40.60 there's 12 gates with the 12 tribes-- 00:05:40.64\00:05:43.24 "as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name 00:05:43.27\00:05:48.68 of the Lord." 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.21 What's etched on our foreheads in Revelation, chapter 14? 00:05:50.25\00:05:54.22 >>Eric: God's name. 00:05:54.25\00:05:55.55 >>Shawn: The Father's name. 00:05:55.58\00:05:56.89 And we've discussed this already. 00:05:56.92\00:05:58.22 God's name is not just a label. 00:05:58.25\00:06:01.16 It's not just a word you pronounce in reference to God. 00:06:01.19\00:06:05.93 It's deeper than that. 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.86 To this day, we still say that if somebody 00:06:07.86\00:06:09.96 has a great reputation, they have "a good name," right? 00:06:10.00\00:06:14.04 Name was meant to-- Hebrew parents 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.47 name their babies very carefully: 00:06:16.50\00:06:17.97 "I hope this child grows into the following character." 00:06:18.01\00:06:21.61 Name is character. 00:06:21.64\00:06:23.68 We give thanks to the name of the Lord. 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.95 It's more than just saying, "Hey, thank You for saving me." 00:06:25.98\00:06:29.45 It's an acknowledgement of who He is. 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.45 And we become so enmeshed with that in the last days 00:06:32.49\00:06:35.29 that it's written in our foreheads. 00:06:35.32\00:06:36.62 This is a symbol of where your moral decisions take place, 00:06:36.66\00:06:40.30 in the frontal lobe. 00:06:40.33\00:06:42.06 It's right--it's uncanny how they got that so right, 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.60 but if God's the author, it makes sense. 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.94 God's name is etched into our foreheads. 00:06:47.97\00:06:50.27 We find out in Exodus--it's one of my go-tos for how important 00:06:50.31\00:06:55.38 the name of God is here. 00:06:55.41\00:06:56.88 You know, here they are, they're on Mount Zion, 00:06:56.91\00:06:58.85 they're in the temple, they're in within the gates, 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.65 and they're worshiping God's name. 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.85 At one point, Moses says, 00:07:03.89\00:07:05.39 "I want to see You. I want to see You." 00:07:06.99\00:07:08.96 "Well, I can't show that to you. It'll kill you, Moses." 00:07:08.99\00:07:10.96 "Yeah, but I really need to see You." 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.63 And God says, "I will make my glory pass before you, 00:07:12.66\00:07:15.26 and I will reveal my name to you." 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.33 And what God doesn't do in that case is approach Moses 00:07:17.37\00:07:20.20 in the cleft of the rock and open a piece of paper. 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.10 Here's my secret name. 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.44 Shh, don't tell anybody, but this is how 00:07:24.47\00:07:27.44 it's actually pronounced, and I will put that away. 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.38 No, no, no, He reveals Himself. 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.28 And when it says that God reveals His name to Moses 00:07:31.31\00:07:34.55 in Exodus, chapter 34, He starts to describe 00:07:34.58\00:07:38.15 His own character: "I am the Lord, who is 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.12 "longsuffering and gracious and righteous and merciful 00:07:40.16\00:07:43.12 and just," and His name is His character. 00:07:43.16\00:07:47.13 We worship God's name; we're worshiping who He is. 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.87 The name is written in our foreheads, 00:07:50.90\00:07:52.70 God's character is etched into our foreheads, 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.54 and God's law is also a transcript of His character. 00:07:55.57\00:07:58.74 The Bible says those on Mount Zion 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.34 are the ones who keep the commandments of God. 00:08:00.38\00:08:02.44 Why is that important? Have they earned a spot 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.45 by keeping the commandments? No, no. 00:08:04.48\00:08:07.32 Keeping God's law was ground zero before we ever sinned. 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.12 You don't earn anything that way. 00:08:10.15\00:08:11.45 That was basic level expectation of humanity. 00:08:11.49\00:08:16.22 But it's a transcript of His character, 00:08:16.26\00:08:18.16 and it says in Hebrews, chapter 10 00:08:18.19\00:08:19.83 that God writes His law in our hearts, 00:08:19.86\00:08:24.77 but He writes His name in our forehead. 00:08:24.80\00:08:27.10 The heart is the mind. It is the mind. 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.44 These things are synonymous. 00:08:29.47\00:08:31.17 I don't know, we could spend hours in a psalm like this, 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.64 but we're worshipping the name of the Lord, 00:08:34.68\00:08:37.18 and that's His character; that's His moral law. 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.18 We're in harmony with it. 00:08:39.21\00:08:40.68 I think this anticipates Revelation, chapter 14. 00:08:40.72\00:08:45.52 >>Eric: It leads us right into it, the whole issue of worship 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.69 and worshiping the true God and His character, who He is. 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.36 >>Shawn: Yeah, exactly. >>Eric: Beautiful, beautiful. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.39 You've got some other-- 00:08:52.43\00:08:53.73 do you want to keep diving into 122? 00:08:53.76\00:08:55.03 >>Shawn: Let's finish this one really quick, yeah. 00:08:55.06\00:08:56.56 Verse 5, really quick, like, I'll burn through 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.27 the whole show. This is important, verse 5: 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.87 "There thrones for judgment were set, 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.54 the thrones of the house of David." 00:09:02.57\00:09:04.74 Okay, we're on Mount Zion, the Father's name is written 00:09:04.77\00:09:06.74 in our foreheads. This parallels-- 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.58 because what do we preach in the three angels' message? 00:09:08.61\00:09:10.95 "Fear God, give glory to Him, 00:09:10.98\00:09:12.55 because the hour of His judgment"-- 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.75 this psalm is foreshadowing that same act. 00:09:15.78\00:09:18.29 There's nothing new in Bible prophecy. 00:09:18.32\00:09:20.26 If we think this message just dropped out of heaven in 1844 00:09:20.29\00:09:24.96 and 1863, we're misguided. 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.03 It's been there since the very beginning of time, 00:09:27.03\00:09:30.80 and it hasn't changed at all. 00:09:30.83\00:09:32.67 "Worship Him who made"-- 00:09:32.70\00:09:34.00 read the Bible; Nehemiah prays to the "God who made"; 00:09:34.04\00:09:37.17 book of Acts, "Worship Him who made"; 00:09:37.21\00:09:39.07 Jonah, who do you worship? "I worship the God who made." 00:09:39.11\00:09:42.94 And the judgment hour shows up here. 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.98 Judgment is tied to heaven's sanctuary. 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.15 That's in Psalm 122: "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! 00:09:47.18\00:09:49.82 "'May they be secure who love you! 00:09:49.85\00:09:51.65 "Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!' 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.52 "For my brothers and companions' sake 00:09:54.56\00:09:55.86 I will say, 'Peace be within you!'" 00:09:55.89\00:09:59.19 That underlines something important. 00:09:59.23\00:10:02.00 If our approach to Bible prophecy 00:10:02.03\00:10:04.73 and the three angels' message is fear-based, 00:10:04.77\00:10:07.34 if that's what you're preaching, small wonder 00:10:07.37\00:10:10.41 you're not seeing the results you hoped for 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.51 because--it's the peace. 00:10:12.54\00:10:14.24 What did the angels proclaim when Jesus becomes incarnate? 00:10:14.28\00:10:17.85 Peace. Peace to earth. 00:10:17.88\00:10:20.88 The arrival of Christ is peace. 00:10:20.92\00:10:22.78 A right understanding of prophecy is peace. 00:10:22.82\00:10:24.99 Anyway, we could spend the entire time 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.62 just in Psalm 122. I put a bunch of psalms in there. 00:10:27.66\00:10:30.46 Good luck in your classes getting through all these. 00:10:30.49\00:10:32.96 But they foreshadow, they anticipate-- 00:10:32.99\00:10:37.10 nah, not even that. 00:10:37.13\00:10:38.43 The message has been the same the whole time: 00:10:38.47\00:10:40.77 Since we sinned, come back to the Creator. 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.87 Come back. Come back to Mount Zion. 00:10:42.90\00:10:44.87 >>Eric: These give us context to understand what's going on 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.44 in Revelation. And typically we expect that Revelation 00:10:47.48\00:10:51.21 contains our day in Bible prophecy. 00:10:51.25\00:10:54.38 And I think that's accurate. >>Shawn: Oh, it's in there. 00:10:54.42\00:10:56.72 >>Eric: But all of this helps us understand 00:10:56.75\00:10:58.72 the significance of that. 00:10:58.75\00:11:00.62 You also talk about Psalm 15 and 24. 00:11:00.66\00:11:05.26 >>Shawn: Yeah, boy, oh boy, how are we ever 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.40 going to get all of this done? 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.16 Just come to my private YouTube channel, 00:11:09.20\00:11:10.93 and I'll just read the whole Bible to you. 00:11:10.97\00:11:13.94 That's not actually true. That's not real. 00:11:13.97\00:11:15.74 Psalm 15, this one's important. 00:11:15.77\00:11:19.21 "O Lord, who shall sojourn in Your tent?" 00:11:19.24\00:11:21.38 Who shall be in the sanctuary? 00:11:21.41\00:11:22.71 "Who shall dwell on Your holy hill?" 00:11:22.74\00:11:24.58 Well, there's a really important question because where are we 00:11:24.61\00:11:28.38 in Revelation 14? >>Eric: Mount Zion. 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.39 >>Shawn: On Mount Zion with Jesus. 00:11:30.42\00:11:33.09 And David asks the question, thousands of years in advance, 00:11:33.12\00:11:37.63 who gets to go up there? 00:11:37.66\00:11:39.69 That would be a really important answer. 00:11:39.73\00:11:41.33 How do I get up on that hill? 00:11:41.36\00:11:43.67 Verse 2: "He who walks blamelessly 00:11:43.70\00:11:46.20 "and does what is right... speaks truth in his heart; 00:11:46.23\00:11:48.27 "who does not slander with his tongue 00:11:48.30\00:11:51.01 and does no evil to his neighbor." 00:11:51.04\00:11:53.11 Take a look at who's standing on Mount Zion in Revelation 14. 00:11:53.14\00:11:57.11 There is no guile in their mouth. 00:11:57.15\00:11:58.55 They tell the truth. There is an absolute parallel. 00:11:58.58\00:12:01.62 The same people allowed on the sanctuary grounds 00:12:01.65\00:12:05.69 in the temple in the Old Testament 00:12:05.72\00:12:07.89 is the same group that shows up there. 00:12:07.92\00:12:09.39 This is a historical faith. 00:12:09.42\00:12:11.26 The standards haven't changed. The message hasn't changed. 00:12:11.29\00:12:13.73 The method of salvation hasn't changed. 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.90 We stand in a long stream of God's people 00:12:15.93\00:12:18.60 who all approach God the same way. 00:12:18.63\00:12:20.84 >>Eric: So we're looking at those who stand 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.20 on Mount Zion. We spent a little time in 1:22, 00:12:22.24\00:12:26.47 not near as much time as we could. 00:12:26.51\00:12:28.01 We're touching all these different psalms. 00:12:28.04\00:12:30.88 You go into it, a little more detail, in the study guide, 00:12:30.91\00:12:33.62 but you have a companion book. 00:12:33.65\00:12:34.95 >>Shawn: I do have a companion book, 00:12:34.98\00:12:36.99 and it gives a little more. 00:12:37.02\00:12:38.92 I wish it would give everything, but if you're finding, 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.46 "Man, I'd like to read a little more on this," 00:12:42.49\00:12:44.26 there's some supplemental material in the book that 00:12:44.29\00:12:46.59 I wrote to go with this so that you'll have a little more. 00:12:46.63\00:12:49.13 If you're teaching class, you're sitting in class 00:12:49.16\00:12:50.97 and wanna sound like you did your homework, 00:12:51.00\00:12:53.23 I'll help you do your homework. Who's allowed up there? 00:16:17.97\00:16:20.11 So right from the top, Revelation 14, verse 1: 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.91 "Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb." 00:16:22.94\00:16:26.45 Well, we've talked about that and how central that is already. 00:16:26.48\00:16:29.32 "With Him 144,000 who had His name and His Father's name 00:16:29.35\00:16:32.82 written on their foreheads." We've looked at that. 00:16:32.85\00:16:35.16 That's more than just a moniker; it's character. 00:16:35.19\00:16:37.89 "And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters 00:16:37.93\00:16:41.20 and like the sound of loud thunder." 00:16:41.23\00:16:42.53 Oh, we could have a study just on that, 00:16:42.56\00:16:43.93 but we don't have that time. 00:16:43.97\00:16:45.87 "Like the roar of many waters... like the sound of loud thunder. 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.14 "The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists 00:16:48.17\00:16:50.04 "playing on their harps, and they were singing 00:16:50.07\00:16:51.51 "a new song before the throne and before 00:16:51.54\00:16:53.41 the four living creatures and before the elders." 00:16:53.44\00:16:55.84 We touched on that in a previous lesson. 00:16:55.88\00:16:58.31 So the cherubim are there. 00:16:58.35\00:17:00.25 "No one could learn that song except the 144,000 00:17:00.28\00:17:03.18 who had been redeemed from the earth." 00:17:03.22\00:17:04.52 Here we go. Who are they? 00:17:04.55\00:17:06.29 Verse 4: "It is these who have not defiled themselves 00:17:06.32\00:17:09.46 with women, for they are virgins." 00:17:09.49\00:17:11.23 Now, pretty clear in this context, 00:17:11.26\00:17:12.73 we're not talking literally. >>Eric: Right. 00:17:12.76\00:17:15.03 >>Shawn: Or every married man is doomed, every married-- 00:17:15.06\00:17:18.20 no, it's like, no, this is spiritual virginity. 00:17:18.23\00:17:21.04 We already looked at marriage is one of the most common metaphors 00:17:21.07\00:17:26.81 throughout Bible, and the story ends 00:17:26.84\00:17:28.84 with the bride of Christ, and the bridegroom comes, 00:17:28.88\00:17:30.98 and the wedding supper of the Lamb. 00:17:31.01\00:17:32.85 These are people who kept themselves pure. 00:17:32.88\00:17:34.62 They didn't commit spiritual adultery 00:17:34.65\00:17:36.89 with the idols and gods of this earth. 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.95 Or if they did, they're now in Christ, 00:17:38.99\00:17:40.36 and that's all forgiven. 00:17:40.39\00:17:41.96 "It's these who have not defiled themselves with women, 00:17:41.99\00:17:44.63 "for they are virgins. It is these who"-- 00:17:44.66\00:17:46.29 my favorite line here-- 00:17:46.33\00:17:47.76 "follow the Lamb wherever He goes." 00:17:47.83\00:17:51.40 I teach that to evangelistic audiences: 00:17:51.43\00:17:53.97 "Lord, we covenant with You tonight 00:17:54.00\00:17:55.70 "that when You speak, we will follow the Lamb 00:17:55.74\00:17:57.57 wherever He goes." 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.11 "These have been redeemed." 00:18:00.14\00:18:01.51 Here's how I know. They're not literal virgins, 00:18:01.54\00:18:03.51 nor are they actual spiritual virgins. 00:18:03.55\00:18:05.28 They are only so in Christ. 00:18:05.31\00:18:07.55 Otherwise, they wouldn't need redemption. 00:18:07.58\00:18:09.78 They've been redeemed. 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.12 "These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits... 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.22 "[in] the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found, 00:18:13.25\00:18:16.69 for they are blameless." 00:18:16.73\00:18:18.03 Now, in what sense would you and I be called-- 00:18:18.06\00:18:19.69 anyway, in a surface reading, I mean, that's it. 00:18:19.73\00:18:22.13 I can't go up on Mount Zion... unless I'm in Christ. 00:18:22.16\00:18:26.23 Don't miss that, right? 00:18:26.27\00:18:27.57 They're there with the Lamb, and it comes up again. 00:18:27.60\00:18:30.41 They follow the Lamb. 00:18:30.44\00:18:31.94 They've been redeemed from the earth. 00:18:31.97\00:18:34.08 You are accounted righteous through Christ. 00:18:34.11\00:18:38.68 That's how you get there. Otherwise you're 00:18:38.71\00:18:40.02 gonna read the Psalms and despair: "I can't qualify." 00:18:40.05\00:18:44.22 So now we go back to Psalm 24, another one. 00:18:44.25\00:18:47.86 I think we looked at Psalm 15 before the break, right? 00:18:47.89\00:18:50.03 >>Eric: Yes, correct. >>Shawn: Look at my memory slip. 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.36 That's aging for you. If you are 30, take care of your brain. 00:18:52.39\00:18:55.86 That's all I want to tell you, because it's going to slip 00:18:55.90\00:18:58.83 on you, whether you want it to or not. 00:18:58.87\00:19:01.07 Aging and death are real, the wages of sin. 00:19:01.10\00:19:03.41 >>Eric: Very much so. >>Shawn: Starts with memory loss 00:19:03.44\00:19:05.24 and then ends in--well, you know how it ends. 00:19:05.27\00:19:09.08 Chapter 24, a psalm of David: 00:19:09.11\00:19:10.91 "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof." 00:19:10.95\00:19:14.45 Does that show up in Revelation 14? Sure it does. 00:19:14.48\00:19:16.79 "Worship Him who made." 00:19:16.82\00:19:18.65 "The world and those who dwell therein." 00:19:18.69\00:19:21.29 Again, that's contra the nations. 00:19:21.32\00:19:23.59 There's a lot here that ties back 00:19:23.63\00:19:25.76 to what we've already studied and already looked at. 00:19:25.79\00:19:27.76 God says, "It's all mine. 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.06 "I know that you're going through the appearance 00:19:29.10\00:19:30.23 like you run the show. It's mine." 00:19:30.27\00:19:32.80 "For He has founded it upon the seas 00:19:32.83\00:19:35.24 and established it upon the rivers." 00:19:35.27\00:19:37.41 Lots there, but here comes the big question: 00:19:37.44\00:19:40.31 "Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?" 00:19:40.34\00:19:41.88 That's the same one we found. 00:19:41.91\00:19:43.71 "Who shall stand in His holy place?" 00:19:43.75\00:19:45.85 Okay, who is it? Now I want to know, Lord. 00:19:45.88\00:19:48.55 "He who has clean hands and a pure heart, 00:19:48.58\00:19:51.69 "who does not lift up his soul to what is false... 00:19:51.72\00:19:54.16 "does not swear deceitfully. 00:19:54.19\00:19:56.32 "He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness 00:19:56.36\00:19:59.13 "from the God of his salvation. 00:19:59.16\00:20:00.66 "Such is the generation of those who seek Him, 00:20:00.70\00:20:02.66 who seek the face of the God of Jacob." 00:20:02.70\00:20:07.04 There's actually more here. 00:20:07.07\00:20:08.37 "Lift up your head, O gates! 00:20:08.40\00:20:10.27 "And be lifted up, O ancient doors, 00:20:10.31\00:20:11.61 that the King of glory may come in." 00:20:11.64\00:20:13.11 It's interesting in that famous book, 00:20:13.14\00:20:14.88 "Desire of Ages," about page 830-something-- 00:20:14.91\00:20:18.15 you'll have to read 10 pages to find it, 00:20:18.18\00:20:19.65 830-something-- 00:20:19.68\00:20:21.85 that book ties that particular statement to Jesus' return 00:20:21.88\00:20:25.45 to heaven, to come into-- the angels welcoming, 00:20:25.49\00:20:28.69 "You've won at the cross." 00:20:28.72\00:20:30.03 So here we have Jesus' ascension. 00:20:30.06\00:20:31.49 "Who is this King of glory?" 00:20:31.53\00:20:33.19 This is the slain Lamb, right, in the sanctuary that 00:20:33.23\00:20:36.23 in Revelation 4 and 5 that we stand with on Mount Zion later. 00:20:36.26\00:20:40.17 "Who is this King of glory? 00:20:40.20\00:20:41.50 "The Lord, strong and mighty, mighty in battle! 00:20:41.54\00:20:43.34 "Lift up your head, O gates! 00:20:43.37\00:20:44.84 "...Lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory 00:20:44.87\00:20:46.98 "may come in. Who is this King of glory? 00:20:47.01\00:20:49.64 The Lord of hosts"-- that's Yahweh-- 00:20:49.68\00:20:52.45 "Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory!" 00:20:52.48\00:20:55.25 Who gets to stand on the hill? 00:20:55.28\00:20:57.05 "He who has clean hands and a pure heart." 00:20:57.09\00:20:59.02 I'm done. 00:20:59.05\00:21:01.62 "Does not lift up his soul to what is false 00:21:01.66\00:21:03.36 or swear deceitfully." 00:21:03.39\00:21:05.76 I'm toast. I'm already disqualified. 00:21:05.79\00:21:08.76 "Such is the generation of those who seek Him, 00:21:08.80\00:21:10.90 who seek the face of the God of Jacob." 00:21:10.93\00:21:15.44 This, to me, is powerful. They're redeemed. 00:21:15.47\00:21:18.61 If that word wasn't there, I'd be despondent right now. 00:21:18.64\00:21:22.14 But when you look at the context, 00:21:22.18\00:21:23.48 these are people who are joyful. 00:21:23.51\00:21:25.08 They're singing this in joy 00:21:25.11\00:21:26.41 as they approach the hill. They're not terrified anymore. 00:21:26.45\00:21:29.18 And that reminds me of the book of Hebrews again where it says, 00:21:29.22\00:21:31.49 "Come boldly to the throne of grace." 00:21:31.52\00:21:33.49 Boldly? Are you kidding me? 00:21:33.52\00:21:35.26 Boldly, me? I can't. 00:21:35.29\00:21:37.93 Yeah, you can. Because you're under the blood of Christ. 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.73 You're not going there alone. 00:21:40.76\00:21:42.53 And I'm not on Mount Zion alone. 00:21:42.56\00:21:45.70 And I don't have to do anything alone. 00:21:45.73\00:21:48.07 "I will never leave you or forsake you." 00:21:48.10\00:21:51.51 I find it interesting here in Psalm 24 that these 00:21:51.54\00:21:53.64 are the people who seek God. 00:21:53.68\00:21:56.64 And here's what I find really interesting. 00:21:56.68\00:21:58.68 You can't actually seek God of your own initiative. 00:21:58.71\00:22:04.32 It doesn't work that way. 00:22:04.35\00:22:06.59 And I know, of course, you make a decision to seek God, yeah. 00:22:06.62\00:22:09.59 The Bible says in Romans, chapter 2 that repentance 00:22:09.62\00:22:11.86 is a gift from God. 00:22:11.89\00:22:13.53 1 Corinthians, chapter 2: "The natural person 00:22:13.56\00:22:15.90 "does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, 00:22:15.93\00:22:17.90 "for they are folly to him... 00:22:17.93\00:22:20.50 "he is not able to understand them... 00:22:20.54\00:22:21.87 they are spiritually discerned." 00:22:21.90\00:22:23.64 How do you end up seeking God? 00:22:23.67\00:22:25.91 It means that the Spirit's already woken up your heart. 00:22:25.94\00:22:29.81 You wouldn't be interested in God at all 00:22:29.84\00:22:33.21 unless He'd already knocked on the door. 00:22:33.25\00:22:35.55 And when people tell me, "I'm terrified 00:22:35.58\00:22:37.32 that I'm not right with God," I say, "That's the first step. 00:22:37.35\00:22:40.52 "You wouldn't care--if God wasn't working on you. 00:22:40.56\00:22:43.29 "The fact that you're worried about this 00:22:43.32\00:22:44.89 "tells me the Spirit of God 00:22:44.93\00:22:46.06 "is already pulling you over the line, 00:22:46.09\00:22:47.86 and you're on your way. Just take that last step." 00:22:47.86\00:22:52.10 Now, seeking implies free will. 00:22:52.13\00:22:53.77 It's up to you to continue to seek the face of God. 00:22:53.80\00:22:57.01 He's not going to force you into the kingdom of heaven. 00:22:57.04\00:22:59.21 So these are people that go up on the holy hill, 00:22:59.24\00:23:01.38 they're willfully seeking God, they want to be there, 00:23:01.41\00:23:03.85 they're joyful about it, 00:23:03.88\00:23:05.18 they're declared pure in Christ, 00:23:05.21\00:23:07.22 and of course they want to live that way. 00:23:07.25\00:23:08.75 They want to follow the Lamb wherever He goes. 00:23:08.78\00:23:10.79 I think the psalm's just like--oh, wow, 00:23:10.82\00:23:13.42 read these two together, and there's more detail. 00:23:13.46\00:23:16.42 And suddenly, prophecy's about joy again, not fear. 00:23:16.46\00:23:20.30 >>Eric: And so many people, 00:23:20.33\00:23:21.60 when they--I remember doing meetings, 00:23:21.63\00:23:23.16 and people coming to the meetings, and they're just, 00:23:23.20\00:23:24.50 they're scared of prophecy. >>Shawn: Oh yeah. 00:23:24.53\00:23:26.90 >>Eric: They've seen the beasts and antichrist 00:23:26.94\00:23:29.54 and mark of the beast, and they're scared. 00:23:29.57\00:23:31.21 This gives us a whole different perspective on prophecy, 00:23:31.24\00:23:33.91 that there should be peace, that there should be joy, 00:23:33.94\00:23:36.44 that there should be comfort in the fact 00:23:36.48\00:23:39.38 that we can indeed be on the hill. 00:23:39.41\00:23:42.82 >>Shawn: Yeah, I know. 00:23:42.85\00:23:44.32 And again, I get it if you're out there 00:23:44.35\00:23:46.65 and you think, "I can't make it." 00:23:46.69\00:23:48.32 I talk to people all the time, just like you do. 00:23:48.36\00:23:50.33 "I don't deserve to be up there. This is terrible. 00:23:50.36\00:23:52.33 I'm going to be one of the ones that God smites." 00:23:52.36\00:23:54.63 Again, read 1 Corinthians 2:12-14. 00:23:54.66\00:23:58.07 You wouldn't care if there wasn't hope. 00:23:58.10\00:24:01.60 That's where you need to start worrying. 00:24:01.64\00:24:04.51 In fact, you know, you're not worrying at all anymore 00:24:04.54\00:24:07.14 once it's past the point of no return. 00:24:07.18\00:24:09.04 I don't worry about people who are worried. 00:24:09.08\00:24:11.15 You're only worried because God is saying, 00:24:11.18\00:24:12.55 "Hey, come up on a hill. I want you here." 00:24:12.58\00:24:15.08 Me? "Yeah, you. I want you on the hill." 00:24:15.12\00:24:17.62 But I can't. "Yes, you can. 00:24:17.65\00:24:18.95 Jesus has redeemed you. You're fine. 00:24:18.99\00:24:21.16 You're fine. Come on up." 00:24:21.19\00:24:22.82 And I got to tell you, the hill's a great place to live. 00:24:22.86\00:24:25.49 I know I don't belong up there, but you're right, 00:24:25.53\00:24:28.66 there's so much joy. Every time they talk 00:24:28.70\00:24:30.33 about going up on Mount Zion 00:24:30.37\00:24:32.20 in the book of Psalms, they're beside themselves. 00:24:32.23\00:24:35.20 It's like, "Wow! I get to go up there!" 00:24:35.24\00:24:38.61 Who reads Revelation like that? 00:24:38.64\00:24:39.94 If you look at modern-day Christianity, 00:24:39.97\00:24:42.01 you don't see a lot of that out there. 00:24:42.04\00:24:43.75 "Oh, antichrist is going to get you." 00:24:43.78\00:24:45.55 It's like, yeah, he's going to try. 00:24:45.58\00:24:47.55 Do your worst. I don't care. 00:24:47.58\00:24:48.98 I'm up on the mountain with-- 00:24:49.02\00:24:50.65 yeah, the dragon is "angry with the woman 00:24:50.69\00:24:52.39 and goes to make war with the remnant of her seed." 00:24:52.42\00:24:54.19 Okay, I think I'm fine. 00:24:54.22\00:24:56.29 I think I'm fine because the Lamb beats him. 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.96 Read Revelation 12. 00:25:00.06\00:25:01.43 The devil's already defeated by the cross of Christ. 00:25:01.46\00:25:03.53 His place is no longer found in heaven. 00:25:03.57\00:25:05.87 The one who's tormenting you is not allowed on the hill, 00:25:05.90\00:25:08.34 never will be ever again, and you're allowed on the hill. 00:25:08.37\00:25:11.87 That's all you need to know. 00:25:11.91\00:25:13.21 >>Eric: You know, I think that's powerful. 00:25:13.24\00:25:15.28 Often when we focus on the idea 00:25:15.31\00:25:18.11 that we don't deserve to be here. 00:25:18.15\00:25:19.78 That's true, we don't deserve to be on the hill, 00:25:19.81\00:25:22.85 but when we do that, when we focus on that, 00:25:22.88\00:25:25.42 the focus is on us. And it's not about us. 00:25:25.45\00:25:30.09 It was never supposed to be about us. 00:25:30.13\00:25:31.96 >>Shawn: No. >>Eric: It's supposed to be 00:25:31.99\00:25:33.29 about Him, about Christ, and what He can do. 00:25:33.33\00:25:37.67 And when we allow our gaze to turn inward, 00:25:37.70\00:25:42.74 that's where we become discouraged, naturally. 00:25:42.77\00:25:45.74 >>Shawn: Absolutely, yeah, there's plenty of material 00:25:45.77\00:25:47.21 in every heart to discourage you. 00:25:47.24\00:25:49.21 I promise you, you could take any sermon I preached, 00:25:49.24\00:25:51.45 read the transcript, and it's not willingly-- 00:25:51.48\00:25:55.15 I don't willingly put error in a sermon. I don't. 00:25:55.18\00:25:59.65 But there'd be enough in there to disqualify me 00:25:59.69\00:26:01.72 from heaven, unwittingly. >>Eric: Yeah. 00:26:01.76\00:26:04.06 >>Shawn: There just would be. 00:26:04.09\00:26:05.59 And anybody who's feeling a little bit confident 00:26:05.63\00:26:07.93 and they're condemning others, I'm thinking, 00:26:07.96\00:26:10.03 "Do you have any idea how you happen to be 00:26:10.07\00:26:11.43 on the hill?" 00:26:11.47\00:26:12.90 If an angel--you know, we're so worried about-- 00:26:12.93\00:26:15.40 we think soul-winning is about being right. 00:26:15.44\00:26:17.94 You have to be right. I don't want to be misunderstood. 00:26:17.97\00:26:20.44 You must be right. You must be faithful to the Word. 00:26:20.48\00:26:23.55 But it's not really about being right. 00:26:23.58\00:26:25.91 It's about loving people the way Jesus loved them 00:26:25.95\00:26:28.12 and introducing them to the One who's always right. 00:26:28.15\00:26:30.15 And that's not you. 00:26:30.19\00:26:33.25 And I often have asked myself this question, 00:26:33.29\00:26:35.32 okay, I think so-and-so is wrong, 00:26:35.36\00:26:36.99 but if my angel showed up tonight to give me a Bible study 00:26:37.03\00:26:39.43 on what I still have wrong, how embarrassing would that be? 00:26:39.46\00:26:42.93 >>Eric: It would be a long night. 00:26:42.96\00:26:44.27 >>Shawn: It would be a long night, 00:26:44.30\00:26:45.60 and he'd barely scrape the surface. 00:26:45.63\00:26:47.67 You get to go on the hill not because you've earned it, 00:26:47.70\00:26:50.17 but because Jesus did. 00:26:50.21\00:26:51.51 >>Eric: That's it. And don't forget that. 00:26:51.54\00:26:54.91 Don't forget that it's not about you; it's about Him. 00:26:54.94\00:26:58.38 It's about what He has done for you 00:26:58.41\00:27:01.12 and what He is doing for you. 00:27:01.15\00:27:03.65 You may feel unworthy. 00:27:03.69\00:27:06.15 Fair and good, it's true. 00:27:06.19\00:27:08.79 You're unworthy, I'm unworthy, and so are you. 00:27:08.82\00:27:11.96 None of us are worthy. 00:27:11.99\00:27:13.29 If we were worthy, we wouldn't need Jesus. 00:27:13.33\00:27:15.46 The fact is, the reason we need Him is because we're unworthy. 00:27:15.50\00:27:18.73 But when we receive Him, when we accept Him 00:27:18.77\00:27:20.47 into our lives, the beauty and the glory 00:27:20.50\00:27:25.81 and the perfection that are His are credited to us, 00:27:25.84\00:27:29.44 not of our own doing, not of our own works, 00:27:29.48\00:27:32.21 not of our own accomplishments. 00:27:32.25\00:27:34.22 It's all about Him, and He works in us. 00:27:34.25\00:27:38.35 So be encouraged. 00:27:38.39\00:27:40.02 Remember that there is a place called Mount Zion, 00:27:40.06\00:27:43.59 and God wants you on that mountain. 00:27:43.63\00:27:46.23 He's preparing you for it, and He has made it possible 00:27:46.26\00:27:49.50 for you to be there. 00:27:49.53\00:27:50.97 We're gonna continue looking at the book of Psalms 00:27:51.00\00:27:54.04 and seeing how the prophecies intertwine 00:27:54.07\00:27:56.44 and weave in the book of Psalms 00:27:56.47\00:27:58.84 when we come back again next week. 00:27:58.87\00:28:00.78 So we look forward to seeing you again next week 00:28:00.81\00:28:02.98 here on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:28:03.01\00:28:06.48 ¤¤¤ 00:28:06.51\00:28:11.52 ¤¤¤ 00:28:24.97\00:28:26.94 [Captions provided by Aberdeen Captioning www.abercap.com] 00:28:26.97\00:28:29.97
