[uplifting music] 00:00:00.46\00:00:04.30 [uplifting music] 00:00:11.31\00:00:13.31 >>Eric Flickinger: Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:14.31\00:00:15.61 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:15.64\00:00:17.61 We are glad that you are joining us again this week 00:00:17.65\00:00:20.65 as we continue our journey through a fascinating subject: 00:00:20.68\00:00:23.82 how to study Bible prophecy. 00:00:23.85\00:00:26.29 We laid down some foundations last week. 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.12 We're going to continue this week in lesson number 2, 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.93 looking at "The Genesis Foundation." 00:00:30.96\00:00:33.63 How can we better understand the prophecies of the Bible 00:00:33.66\00:00:36.60 later in the story by going back to the book of Genesis? 00:00:36.63\00:00:41.20 We're going to begin with prayer. 00:00:41.24\00:00:42.97 Father, we thank You for giving us an opportunity once again 00:00:43.00\00:00:46.47 to learn more about You through our study of Your Word 00:00:46.51\00:00:49.51 and, specifically, the prophecies in Your Word. 00:00:49.54\00:00:52.01 We ask that You would help us to gain 00:00:52.05\00:00:53.82 a clearer understanding of You and Your plan 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.12 for all of our lives through the book of Genesis today. 00:00:56.15\00:00:59.89 We thank You, in Jesus' name, amen. 00:00:59.92\00:01:03.26 Well, we're happy to have back with us, once again, this week 00:01:03.29\00:01:05.86 the author of this quarter's "Sabbath School" lesson, 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.26 Pastor Shawn Boonstra. 00:01:08.30\00:01:09.60 He is the speaker/director of the Voice of Prophecy ministry. 00:01:09.63\00:01:13.10 Shawn, welcome back. 00:01:13.13\00:01:14.44 >>Shawn Boonstra: I'm surprised I got a return invitation 00:01:14.47\00:01:16.04 for a second week. [laughing] >>Eric: Here we go. 00:01:16.07\00:01:18.37 Let's see if you get a third-week invitation. 00:01:18.41\00:01:20.58 >>Shawn: Let's see what I can do today to get myself disinvited. 00:01:20.61\00:01:23.58 >>Eric: It all depends on where we go from here. 00:01:23.61\00:01:25.51 But knowing what this quarter's lesson is about, 00:01:25.55\00:01:27.98 and this week especially, 00:01:28.02\00:01:29.52 I think you'd better make some room in your schedule 00:01:29.55\00:01:31.85 for episode number three. 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.19 That's my feeling. The Genesis Foundation-- 00:01:33.22\00:01:35.59 you refer to the book of Genesis as kind of a survey course 00:01:35.62\00:01:39.26 in Sunday's lesson, 00:01:39.29\00:01:41.23 kind of a Bible Prophecy 101 or Understanding the Bible 101. 00:01:41.26\00:01:46.10 What's the significance of the book of Genesis 00:01:46.13\00:01:47.70 as we are trying to understand Bible prophecy? 00:01:47.74\00:01:50.04 >>Shawn: Yeah, I'm completely enraptured with-- 00:01:50.07\00:01:53.27 even when I was a brand-new believer, 00:01:53.31\00:01:54.91 or even pre-believer, the first 11 chapters of Genesis 00:01:54.94\00:01:57.95 in particular always held my attention. 00:01:57.98\00:02:00.82 Now, we've given these first five books, 00:02:00.85\00:02:03.15 the Torah, we've given the Pentateuch Latin names-- 00:02:03.18\00:02:09.36 Genesis, Exodus. The Hebrews didn't do that. 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.86 They just lifted a phrase out of the first verse: 00:02:11.89\00:02:13.80 "in the beginning," "bereshit," "in the beginning." 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.80 And it's the beginning of everything. 00:02:16.83\00:02:18.43 I'm convinced that especially us, 00:02:18.47\00:02:20.67 Seventh-day Adventist Christians in particular, 00:02:20.70\00:02:23.24 everything we teach and believe can be found 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.67 in the first 11 chapters of Genesis. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.94 It's in embryonic form, 00:02:27.98\00:02:29.44 and you have to do a little bit of homework, 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.25 but it is all there. 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.28 There's a lot of first-mentions. 00:02:34.32\00:02:35.82 And I'm a big fan of the-- the rule is too-- 00:02:35.85\00:02:38.99 law, people say the law of first mention. 00:02:39.02\00:02:40.66 That's too strict. It's not a law. It's not a rule. 00:02:40.69\00:02:43.66 It's a general principle or pattern. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.39 The first time something shows up in the Bible, 00:02:45.43\00:02:47.20 pay very careful attention 00:02:47.23\00:02:48.80 because God's laying the foundation 00:02:48.83\00:02:50.27 for how you should understand that concept 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.17 throughout the rest of the Bible. 00:02:52.20\00:02:53.44 So, think about what's in the first 11 chapters of Genesis: 00:02:53.47\00:02:56.74 creation, obviously, the big one right there. 00:02:56.77\00:02:58.91 God is the Creator. The Sabbath shows up. 00:02:58.94\00:03:01.01 It's Genesis, chapter 2. It's right out of the gate. 00:03:01.04\00:03:03.98 The origin of sin and suffering, it's there. 00:03:04.01\00:03:06.38 And that's a big, big question, even for secular minds. 00:03:06.41\00:03:09.42 "Why do I have to be suffering in this world?" 00:03:09.45\00:03:11.59 Plan of salvation is there right away. 00:03:11.62\00:03:13.62 You know, the seed of the woman shows up in Genesis, chapter 3. 00:03:13.66\00:03:16.39 The state of the dead is there. 00:03:16.42\00:03:17.73 "If you eat from that tree, you will surely die." 00:03:17.76\00:03:21.63 It's weird how God doesn't say, 00:03:21.66\00:03:22.96 float away to exist in, you know, the Elysium Fields. 00:03:23.00\00:03:26.40 But the state of the dead-- health message is there. 00:03:26.43\00:03:29.30 We see God's original plan for humanity-- 00:03:29.34\00:03:31.57 every herb of the field, every-- 00:03:31.61\00:03:32.91 so we know the best-- the health message's there. 00:03:32.94\00:03:35.24 The prophecy--the gift of prophecy's on display-- 00:03:35.28\00:03:38.05 God communicating directly with Noah, for example. 00:03:38.08\00:03:41.85 The Incarnation is there. I mean, everything, 00:03:41.88\00:03:44.65 everything that's important to believe shows up 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.86 in those opening chapters of the book of Genesis, 00:03:46.89\00:03:49.29 absolutely everything. So if you can master 00:03:49.32\00:03:51.63 those first 11 chapters, 00:03:51.66\00:03:52.96 you're well on your way to understanding 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.36 the rest of Scripture-- and prophecy in particular. 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.20 >>Eric: And that's very important for us 00:03:57.23\00:03:58.67 to understand today and to make sense of 00:03:58.70\00:04:01.70 the many and varied interpretations 00:04:01.74\00:04:03.24 that are out there, 00:04:03.27\00:04:04.57 to sift through them and find what's accurate, 00:04:04.61\00:04:06.64 what's right. 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.31 One thing that's very important for us to understand 00:04:08.34\00:04:10.15 is God's love. >>Shawn: Right. 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.71 >>Eric: And in Monday's lesson you talk about God's love 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.12 and how God's love is different 00:04:14.15\00:04:17.15 from what maybe we understand love to be. 00:04:17.19\00:04:20.49 We put our own somewhat twisted spin-- 00:04:20.52\00:04:24.66 maybe I'm speaking over myself-- 00:04:24.69\00:04:26.70 but a twisted spin on what love is. 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.33 But God gives us a clearer picture in the Bible. 00:04:29.36\00:04:32.23 What is--how do we understand the love of God? 00:04:32.27\00:04:34.64 >>Shawn: Do you know what I find interesting? 00:04:34.67\00:04:35.80 Obviously, the love of God is huge. 00:04:35.84\00:04:37.77 God's character is defined by John as love, right? 00:04:37.81\00:04:41.81 And Christians know this instinctively. 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.45 God is love. That's the biggest part of who He is. 00:04:43.48\00:04:47.12 Understanding what that love is, 00:04:47.15\00:04:50.12 that's a little more complicated. 00:04:50.15\00:04:51.79 What I find fascinating-- 00:04:51.82\00:04:53.29 it's such a big part of who God is, 00:04:53.32\00:04:54.82 but it doesn't show up for 22 chapters. 00:04:54.86\00:04:56.83 The concept of love doesn't show up 00:04:56.86\00:04:59.06 until we get to the story of Abraham and Isaac 00:04:59.09\00:05:02.03 in Genesis, chapter 22. 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.33 I think it's Genesis 22 and verse 2 00:05:04.37\00:05:07.24 is the first actual mention of love in the Old Testament. 00:05:07.27\00:05:12.41 "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love." 00:05:12.44\00:05:17.11 And when you start to dig into this story, 00:05:17.15\00:05:18.58 you start to understand what God understands by love. 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.38 Now, Christians are familiar-- this has been done to death 00:05:21.42\00:05:24.45 in almost every Bible study you've ever gone to: 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.29 "There's three words for 'love' in Greek." 00:05:26.32\00:05:28.12 There's actually four, I think, but we've got "eros," 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.69 erotic love--it's where... you know, husband and wife-- 00:05:30.73\00:05:34.30 "phileo," brotherly love-- 00:05:34.36\00:05:35.83 "Philadelphia," the "city of brotherly love," 00:05:35.86\00:05:38.30 And "agape"-- we still sometimes, 00:05:38.33\00:05:40.30 some churches will refer to the Communion service 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.30 as an "agape feast." 00:05:42.34\00:05:43.81 That is the self-giving, selfless love. 00:05:43.84\00:05:47.04 And what do we find when love first shows up 00:05:47.08\00:05:49.08 in Genesis? "Here's your son that you love. 00:05:49.11\00:05:52.11 I'm asking you to put him on an altar." 00:05:52.15\00:05:55.85 And what I find fascinating about this 00:05:55.88\00:05:57.49 is that they go to the mountains of Moriah for this. 00:05:57.52\00:06:02.86 You'll notice Isaac carries the wood for his own sacrifice. 00:06:02.89\00:06:07.46 And mountains of Moriah, that's where Golgotha-- 00:06:07.50\00:06:10.60 that's where Calvary is. 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.60 Thousands of years in advance, they're going to the very spot 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.17 where God would put His Son on the altar. 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.11 And Jesus is introduced in the Bible, 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.08 "This is my beloved Son, in whom I'm well pleased. 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.24 I love this Son of mine." 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.61 What kind of love is this? The kind that would sacrifice. 00:06:25.65\00:06:29.35 God loves His Son because He was willing 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.45 to suspend everything. The book of Hebrews gets into detail. 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.66 "I will follow Your will. We will save humanity." 00:06:34.69\00:06:37.09 "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son." 00:06:37.13\00:06:43.10 What's really fascinating-- you know, first mention 00:06:43.13\00:06:45.17 is going to come up in this quarterly-- 00:06:45.20\00:06:47.34 this is also the first mention of a lamb anywhere in the Bible. 00:06:47.37\00:06:52.01 "Father, here's the wood for the fire. 00:06:52.04\00:06:53.68 Where is the lamb?" 00:06:53.71\00:06:55.28 God provides the ram caught in the thicket. 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.51 First time lamb shows up in John's Gospel 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.22 is John the Baptist answering Isaac's question. 00:07:00.25\00:07:03.75 "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.39 the sin of the world!" 00:07:05.42\00:07:06.72 This is a picture of God's self-sacrificing love: 00:07:06.76\00:07:10.73 not willing to spare Himself if it means saving you. 00:07:10.76\00:07:15.76 That's God's love. 00:07:15.80\00:07:17.10 >>Eric: So that gives us a clear picture. 00:07:17.13\00:07:18.43 And as you mentioned, that lamb is right there, 00:07:18.47\00:07:20.10 just--the parallels are incredible. 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.20 One might say, "What are the chances?" 00:07:22.24\00:07:24.44 Well...zero, exactly. >>Shawn: Zero. 00:07:24.47\00:07:27.24 >>Eric: But God did this for a reason, for us to be able 00:07:27.28\00:07:30.08 to find it and learn more about Him and the sacrificial-- 00:07:30.11\00:07:33.95 well, let me go on to my next question, 00:07:33.98\00:07:35.85 which is about the sacrificial system. 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.69 What about the sanctuary service? 00:07:37.72\00:07:39.65 Where do we find this, or at least allusions to it 00:07:39.69\00:07:44.03 or connections to the sacrificial system? 00:07:44.06\00:07:46.80 >>Shawn: All right, this-- you're gonna have to get 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.83 your Bible out for this one. 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.17 This is gonna take a little bit of thinking, but we know that, 00:07:50.20\00:07:54.10 you know, the sanctuary was designed by God. 00:07:54.14\00:07:56.14 The book of Hebrews says God told Moses, 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.81 "Look, build according to the pattern 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.28 that I'm gonna to show you." There was no creative leeway 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.94 in the sanctuary because everything in there was pointing 00:08:02.98\00:08:05.95 to the ministry of Christ in our behalf. 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.22 And the most obvious element would be the sacrificial lamb. 00:08:08.25\00:08:12.89 Now, that sanctuary, as you study it, 00:08:12.92\00:08:15.19 it had an outer courtyard where the lamb is sacrificed. 00:08:15.22\00:08:17.36 The priest would carry the blood inside the holy place 00:08:17.39\00:08:20.20 and sprinkle it against the veil. 00:08:20.23\00:08:21.56 Behind the veil is the most holy place, 00:08:21.60\00:08:24.23 which is God's throne room. He literally took up residence. 00:08:24.27\00:08:28.00 The cloud would come down during the Exodus 00:08:28.04\00:08:29.97 and occupy the most holy place. 00:08:30.01\00:08:32.01 Same thing happened when Solomon dedicated the temple. 00:08:32.04\00:08:34.28 We read the glory of God filled the most holy place. 00:08:34.31\00:08:37.55 There was only one article of furniture inside there, 00:08:37.58\00:08:39.71 and it was the ark of the covenant, 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.72 this acacia wood chest covered with gold--two natures. 00:08:41.75\00:08:46.59 There are angels, cherubim specifically, on top. 00:08:46.62\00:08:49.62 Six times the Old Testament describes God as 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.76 "the One who dwells between the cherubim." 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.96 And above that mercy seat-- in German, the "Gnadenstuhl"-- 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.47 I don't know why-- that's just a fun word. 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.60 In Genesis, chapter 3, it shows up-- 00:09:00.64\00:09:03.14 and people say it's not there. Yeah, it is. 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.97 Genesis 3, verse 24: 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.21 "He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden 00:09:08.24\00:09:12.01 of Eden He placed the cherubim." 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.65 Cherubim are only in association with the most holy place 00:09:14.68\00:09:17.72 in God's throne. So there's cherubim. 00:09:17.75\00:09:19.72 "A flaming sword that turned every way to guard 00:09:19.75\00:09:22.06 the way to the tree of life." What do we have? 00:09:22.09\00:09:24.63 We have a flaming presence and cherubim at the gates of Eden. 00:09:24.66\00:09:31.80 Now, I think if you look at different commentaries 00:09:31.83\00:09:35.20 like "Patriarchs and Prophets," page 84, we know-- 00:09:35.24\00:09:39.54 and Hugh Martin, Calvinist commentator from the 1800s, 00:09:39.57\00:09:43.98 Hugh Martin in 1866 writes, 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.91 look, it's pretty obvious everybody gathered 00:09:45.95\00:09:47.88 at the gates of Eden, and they had 00:09:47.92\00:09:49.28 the first sanctuary service there. 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.62 Why would they say that? 00:09:50.65\00:09:52.39 Well, that word, "He placed" the cherubim, 00:09:52.42\00:09:53.96 in Hebrew is "shakan." 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.96 It's the root word for "shekinah." 00:09:55.99\00:09:58.79 It literally means "tabernacled." 00:09:58.83\00:10:01.10 God tabernacled two cherubim, 00:10:01.13\00:10:03.67 and there was a brilliant presence, 00:10:03.70\00:10:05.20 the sword of the-- right between them. 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.04 This is the earliest sanctuary service, 00:10:08.07\00:10:10.51 and it's right here in Genesis, chapter 3. 00:10:10.54\00:10:14.08 In the original languages in way back when, 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.51 nobody was surprised when they got to Leviticus 00:10:16.54\00:10:18.51 and they were building something that looked like this 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.32 because they already knew about it. 00:10:21.35\00:10:23.25 >>Eric: So they were familiar. As you've said, God's laid the-- 00:10:23.28\00:10:25.59 He's placed these seeds all the way through the book of Genesis 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.92 that are then going to germinate through the rest of the Bible, 00:10:29.96\00:10:32.86 and God wants us to be able to trace these things back. 00:10:32.89\00:10:35.66 >>Shawn: Right, where have I heard this before, right? 00:10:35.70\00:10:38.67 And it says in Genesis, chapter 4, Cain, 00:10:38.70\00:10:43.27 when he gets kicked out, he leaves the presence of the Lord. 00:10:43.30\00:10:46.91 Well, how can you do that? Psalm 139 is pretty clear. 00:10:46.94\00:10:49.34 And I think we're going to look at this again 00:10:49.38\00:10:50.68 when we get to Jonah in a later lesson. 00:10:50.71\00:10:52.85 But you--there's--you can't hide from God. 00:10:52.88\00:10:56.05 Psalm 139, "Whither shall I flee?" 00:10:56.08\00:10:57.92 You know, you can't hide from God. 00:10:57.95\00:10:59.65 Cain didn't know a magical place on earth 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.26 where God couldn't find him. 00:11:01.29\00:11:02.59 He was literally leaving the presence of God 00:11:02.62\00:11:04.69 at the gates of the Garden of Eden, 00:11:04.73\00:11:06.56 walking away from that sanctuary service, 00:11:06.59\00:11:08.70 which foreshadowed Christ's salvation of us 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.27 as the Lamb of God. 00:11:11.30\00:11:12.83 >>Eric: You know, you mentioned Cain, which kind of draws us 00:11:12.87\00:11:15.17 to another subject that you cover in this week's lesson, 00:11:15.20\00:11:19.17 and that is the subject of death. 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.18 And we wanna dig into that subject 00:11:21.21\00:11:23.35 because understanding death, again, 00:11:23.38\00:11:25.61 comes all the way back here to Genesis, 00:11:25.65\00:11:27.55 and the subject is expanded, expounded upon, 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.72 throughout the rest of Scripture. 00:11:31.75\00:11:33.25 And it's something that we still deal with today 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.59 in a very real way. It's a painful subject. 00:11:35.62\00:11:39.66 But before we dig into that-- 00:11:40.66\00:11:42.10 we're gonna take a break here in just a second. 00:11:42.13\00:11:45.13 As we mentioned last week, 00:11:45.17\00:11:46.47 you've crammed as much as you can 00:11:46.50\00:11:47.80 into the little study guide book itself. 00:11:47.84\00:11:50.84 But there's more. 00:11:50.87\00:11:52.21 >>Shawn: I think you get 300 words per page 00:11:52.24\00:11:53.84 or something like that. 00:11:53.88\00:11:55.18 And I don't have a lot of things about me that-- 00:11:55.21\00:11:58.51 you know, but I'm wordy. 00:11:58.55\00:12:00.18 You know, like, 300 didn't seem like enough. 00:12:00.22\00:12:01.85 So some of the stuff that didn't end up in the quarterly 00:12:01.88\00:12:04.59 ended up in a companion book. 00:12:04.62\00:12:06.35 And some of it will show up sitting here with you in studio. 00:12:06.39\00:12:09.29 >>Eric: Yes, so the companion book is gonna be more. 00:12:09.32\00:12:13.13 It's going to dig deeper. 00:12:13.16\00:12:14.46 It's going to give some different perspectives 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.06 or additional facets of what we are looking at. 00:12:16.10\00:12:20.04 And so if you are interested in learning more about 00:12:20.07\00:12:23.34 how to accurately, rightly divide the word of truth, 00:12:23.37\00:12:26.64 if you're wanting to understand more the significance of Genesis 00:12:26.68\00:12:29.84 and this law of first mention, 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.68 or this principle of first mention, 00:12:31.71\00:12:34.45 that Shawn is talking about, 00:12:34.48\00:12:35.92 make sure you pick up that companion book 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.65 to this quarter's Sabbath school lesson. 00:12:38.69\00:12:41.46 You will be glad that you have done so 00:12:41.49\00:12:43.43 because not only are you going to learn 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.43 more about these subjects for yourself; 00:12:45.46\00:12:48.06 you're going to be able to share these concepts, these ideas, 00:12:48.10\00:12:52.53 more effectively, more efficiently with others 00:12:52.57\00:12:55.70 so that they can have more hope and more encouragement 00:12:55.74\00:12:58.41 in this life as well. 00:12:58.44\00:13:00.41 So you can go and find that book. 00:13:00.44\00:13:02.11 That is the companion book to this quarter's 00:13:02.14\00:13:03.81 "Sabbath School" lesson at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:03.85\00:13:06.55 Again, that's at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.35 Just scroll down. But it's an important one. 00:14:23.49\00:14:25.96 It's something that everybody deals with, 00:14:25.99\00:14:27.96 and it's something that the vast majority of people 00:14:27.96\00:14:30.33 completely understand. 00:14:30.37\00:14:33.13 What's the significance of understanding it correctly, 00:14:33.17\00:14:35.57 and how does Genesis help us with this? 00:14:35.60\00:14:37.07 >>Shawn: It's really our biggest problem, 00:14:37.11\00:14:38.41 isn't it, death? 00:14:38.44\00:14:39.74 I don't care how secular somebody is. 00:14:39.77\00:14:41.61 Death bothers them. 00:14:41.64\00:14:43.18 And I find it fascinating that even-- 00:14:43.21\00:14:47.55 oh, you go to a secular funeral. 00:14:47.58\00:14:48.72 What's his name, the guy who wrote 00:14:48.75\00:14:50.29 "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? 00:14:50.32\00:14:51.79 Douglas Adams died, and they had a funeral for him, 00:14:51.82\00:14:54.16 and Dawkins is the speaker, 00:14:54.19\00:14:56.42 and Dawkins is like, "We've been cheated. 00:14:56.46\00:14:59.46 He died too young." 00:14:59.49\00:15:01.20 Wait a minute. Push the pause button. 00:15:01.23\00:15:03.16 You've been cheated? 00:15:03.20\00:15:04.57 So this feels wrong to you that he died. 00:15:04.60\00:15:07.07 Is he not just a living organism? 00:15:07.10\00:15:08.47 I mean, we all die. 00:15:08.50\00:15:10.27 It's just a matter of when and how that we die. 00:15:10.31\00:15:13.44 And you feel cheated? 00:15:13.48\00:15:15.01 Do you feel that there's been a moral wrong 00:15:15.04\00:15:17.11 that somebody went young? I mean, give your hand away. 00:15:17.15\00:15:20.15 It's the thing that bothers us the most. 00:15:20.18\00:15:22.05 And Ecclesiastes 3, verse 11, is very pointed: 00:15:22.08\00:15:25.62 God "has put eternity" in the heart. 00:15:25.65\00:15:27.82 So you can stand by a grave, 00:15:27.86\00:15:29.79 and I don't care how reasonable you are, 00:15:29.82\00:15:32.16 I don't care how many biology courses you've taken-- 00:15:32.19\00:15:35.13 something inside of you screams, 00:15:35.16\00:15:36.83 "This is not how it's supposed to be." 00:15:36.87\00:15:40.34 Why? Why? 00:15:40.37\00:15:42.47 So we're wired to fight against it. 00:15:42.50\00:15:44.31 We all instinctively know that it's not the way 00:15:44.34\00:15:47.54 it's supposed to be. And of course when we get to Genesis, 00:15:47.58\00:15:49.88 we find the explanation for why it ended up this way, 00:15:49.91\00:15:54.55 and it's such a big subject. 00:15:54.58\00:15:55.88 I don't know how we'll conquer this in the time 00:15:55.92\00:15:58.05 that we've got, folks, but it's your biggest problem. 00:15:58.09\00:16:01.56 It really is your biggest problem. 00:16:01.59\00:16:02.89 Why study? Why think? Why work on yourself? 00:16:02.92\00:16:06.06 Why develop yourself for 80 years to do, what, 00:16:06.09\00:16:09.03 rot in a casket? 00:16:09.06\00:16:10.37 Pardon me, but that's exactly what happens. 00:16:10.40\00:16:12.97 It's that blunt. 00:16:13.00\00:16:14.67 Why? Why are you driven to do anything 00:16:14.70\00:16:18.34 if you're just going to punch the clock till it's over, 00:16:18.37\00:16:20.68 and then you just evaporate into the universe? 00:16:20.71\00:16:23.75 And it's in Genesis that we get the answer, right? 00:16:23.78\00:16:26.25 Genesis 2, verse 17: "The tree of the knowledge of good 00:16:26.28\00:16:30.42 "and evil you shall not eat, 00:16:30.45\00:16:33.56 for in [that] day...you eat of it you shall surely die." 00:16:33.59\00:16:37.36 You're going to die, and then we get in Genesis 00:16:37.39\00:16:40.26 the first death, and it's backwards 00:16:40.30\00:16:42.33 from what you'd expect. You'd expect for Adam and Eve 00:16:42.36\00:16:44.67 to get old and die, but the first death is a murder. 00:16:44.70\00:16:49.27 It's a fratricide, right? It's Cain murdering his brother. 00:16:49.30\00:16:52.94 It is our very worst on open display. 00:16:52.97\00:16:56.34 He goes and kills his brother, and then we have God saying, 00:16:56.38\00:17:02.58 "Look, the seed of the woman's going to come 00:17:02.62\00:17:04.95 and crush the serpent's head." 00:17:04.99\00:17:06.45 We get the promise that this is all going to be reversed. 00:17:06.49\00:17:09.12 So we find the gospel in its infancy, 00:17:09.16\00:17:12.46 in embryonic form, 00:17:12.49\00:17:13.83 in these same chapters where we find death 00:17:13.86\00:17:16.53 coming into being in the first murder. 00:17:16.56\00:17:18.80 And, of course, Paul tells us later, in 1 Corinthians 15, 00:17:18.83\00:17:21.64 Christ rose from the dead. 00:17:21.67\00:17:23.51 "If He didn't," Paul says, "then you are lost." 00:17:23.54\00:17:28.21 It's all--he uses the word "futile." 00:17:28.24\00:17:30.41 It's all futile. Our faith is in vain. 00:17:30.45\00:17:33.15 There's nothing to hope for. 00:17:33.18\00:17:34.92 And Paul has just described what should happen in our brains 00:17:34.95\00:17:38.85 if death is the end. 00:17:38.89\00:17:40.62 If that's it, it's like, "Okay, life is futile." 00:17:40.66\00:17:43.83 That was the philosophy of the 19th century. 00:17:43.86\00:17:46.03 They came to the conclusion, "I guess, live for the present." 00:17:46.06\00:17:48.50 I mean, Camus said, don't live in the past. That's depressing. 00:17:48.53\00:17:51.67 The future--who knows what that's going to bring? 00:17:51.70\00:17:53.34 So just live in this moment right now. 00:17:53.37\00:17:55.07 And then when it happens, it happens. 00:17:55.10\00:17:57.97 We have something more. 00:17:58.01\00:17:59.94 Revelation, chapter 1, opens this way, 00:18:00.04\00:18:02.34 and it opens with death. 00:18:02.38\00:18:03.71 It's Jesus introducing Himself in verse 18. 00:18:03.75\00:18:08.15 He describes it-- well, it's verse 17: 00:18:08.18\00:18:10.52 "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. 00:18:10.55\00:18:13.72 "I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, 00:18:13.76\00:18:17.36 and I have the keys of Death and Hades." 00:18:17.39\00:18:20.56 Hades, a reference in the Greek there, 00:18:20.60\00:18:22.86 just, to the grave. 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.03 This is our biggest problem. It bothers everybody. 00:18:25.07\00:18:28.44 And Genesis has got the answers to it. 00:18:28.47\00:18:30.31 And you start here understanding, you know, 00:18:30.34\00:18:33.04 what death is, why it happened. And why it happened-- 00:18:33.07\00:18:36.38 you know, there's another question we could probe 00:18:36.41\00:18:38.45 if we had the time. Why death? 00:18:38.48\00:18:40.12 Doesn't that seem a little severe for what we've done? 00:18:40.15\00:18:44.29 And what God's solution is, 00:18:44.32\00:18:45.62 it's all there in the opening, you know, verses. 00:18:45.65\00:18:48.92 >>Eric: So we see that there is a solution 00:18:48.96\00:18:50.79 to the problem of death. 00:18:50.83\00:18:52.79 And like you said, it's something that everybody, 00:18:52.83\00:18:55.13 regardless of your theological or philosophical bent, 00:18:55.16\00:18:58.33 it's a reality. >>Shawn: Yep. 00:18:58.37\00:19:00.67 >>Eric: Unless we happen to get translated, 00:19:00.70\00:19:02.20 which, for the vast majority of us, 00:19:02.24\00:19:03.54 that's probably not going to be the case. 00:19:03.57\00:19:05.57 And most people are going to die. 00:19:05.61\00:19:06.94 >>Shawn: Yeah, I'm getting closer and closer. 00:19:06.98\00:19:08.94 >>Eric: We're getting closer and closer by the moment. 00:19:08.98\00:19:10.95 >>Shawn: You too, folks. You're on a conveyor belt 00:19:10.98\00:19:13.11 that ends with a casket. [makes splat sound] 00:19:13.15\00:19:14.95 You know, if the Lord doesn't come-- 00:19:14.98\00:19:16.72 it's not if; it is when. 00:19:16.75\00:19:19.15 And this is something that everybody-- 00:19:19.19\00:19:21.52 it's one of our biggest sources of existential angst is 00:19:21.56\00:19:24.16 "I'm going to die," you know. 00:19:24.19\00:19:27.46 And we struggle to even think of the universe 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.93 that existed before we did. How did that go down? 00:19:29.96\00:19:32.77 You know, people were living and doing stuff, 00:19:32.80\00:19:34.37 and I wasn't around? And it's going to happen again. 00:19:34.40\00:19:37.04 You die again, and that drives us nuts, 00:19:37.07\00:19:39.37 unless you can find an answer to it. 00:19:39.41\00:19:41.04 And there's a reason it bothers you. 00:19:41.08\00:19:42.84 God wants it to bother you. 00:19:42.88\00:19:45.25 >>Eric: And we're finding that there is a reason. 00:19:45.28\00:19:48.22 And through the Bible, we get hope, 00:19:48.25\00:19:50.65 which a lot of people, sadly, today don't have. 00:19:50.69\00:19:52.82 Another big subject that you've hit on 00:19:52.85\00:19:55.06 in this week's lesson is that of worship. 00:19:55.09\00:19:58.09 Worship is going to play a massive role 00:19:58.13\00:20:00.46 at the very end of time. It plays a huge role today. 00:20:00.50\00:20:02.93 I don't wanna diminish the importance of it today. 00:20:02.96\00:20:05.63 But as we get closer to the end of time, 00:20:05.67\00:20:06.97 some of the issues that are going to come to surface-- 00:20:07.00\00:20:12.04 worship is a big deal. 00:20:12.07\00:20:13.38 Back in Genesis, it was a big deal. 00:20:13.41\00:20:14.91 Walk us through the connection here. 00:20:14.94\00:20:16.24 >>Shawn: Yeah, in Genesis, you know, it's interesting that, 00:20:16.28\00:20:20.58 as we get to Genesis 2, 00:20:20.62\00:20:21.92 many people read the six days of creation, stop. 00:20:21.95\00:20:24.25 No, it continues into chapter 2. 00:20:24.29\00:20:26.09 You know, the chapters and verses 00:20:26.12\00:20:27.72 were a late addition to the Bible, 00:20:27.76\00:20:29.42 Stephen Langton, 1200s. 00:20:29.46\00:20:31.36 I mean, for 1,200 years-- in the New Testament period, 00:20:31.39\00:20:34.46 we didn't have chapters and verses. 00:20:34.50\00:20:36.00 So we often stop at the end of a chapter, 00:20:36.03\00:20:37.87 but that creation story, that first creation account, 00:20:37.90\00:20:40.90 really ends in the first part of chapter 2. 00:20:40.94\00:20:44.11 And God blesses the seventh day, makes it holy. 00:20:44.14\00:20:47.08 It--here's what's fascinating. 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.64 When they dedicated the temple-- 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.68 I believe the temple in Solomon's time 00:20:51.71\00:20:53.35 took seven years to build 00:20:53.38\00:20:56.42 and then seven days of dedication. 00:20:56.45\00:20:57.92 And on the seventh day the presence of God 00:20:57.95\00:20:59.62 fills that sanctuary. 00:20:59.65\00:21:01.12 On the seventh day, it's almost as if God is taking His seat 00:21:01.16\00:21:04.96 at the head of creation and moving into the garden. 00:21:04.99\00:21:08.36 "I am now enthroned as King." 00:21:08.40\00:21:10.83 Revelation 4, verse 11 tells us the very reason 00:21:10.87\00:21:13.47 we worship God is because He's Creator. 00:21:13.50\00:21:15.74 "For You are holy, for You have made all things. 00:21:15.77\00:21:18.21 By Your will they were created." 00:21:18.24\00:21:20.44 Worship shows up here at the very beginning. 00:21:20.48\00:21:23.61 God is identified as the one in whom we have our being. 00:21:23.65\00:21:27.22 He is the reason we exist. 00:21:27.25\00:21:28.75 God's existence depends on nobody. 00:21:28.78\00:21:31.95 He's self-existent. We are dependent on Him. 00:21:31.99\00:21:35.52 That's the reason for this worship relationship. 00:21:35.56\00:21:39.96 Six times, if you get to the center 00:21:40.00\00:21:42.06 of the book of Revelation, the very heart of it-- 00:21:42.10\00:21:44.07 chapters 12, 13, and 14-- worship is mentioned six times. 00:21:44.10\00:21:49.00 And only one of those, I believe, 00:21:49.04\00:21:51.94 is actually in the right sense. 00:21:51.97\00:21:53.27 It's in Revelation 14: "Worship Him who made"-- 00:21:53.31\00:21:56.95 it's a reference back to the creation story. 00:21:56.98\00:21:59.55 The other references are the earth bowing 00:21:59.58\00:22:02.28 before an inappropriate power, 00:22:02.32\00:22:04.42 the summation of all human ambition 00:22:04.45\00:22:07.16 in the beast that comes out of the sea, 00:22:07.19\00:22:09.12 and there's someone else commanding human worship. 00:22:09.16\00:22:12.69 And it falls into two camps at the end. 00:22:12.73\00:22:14.63 And we can find that right away in Genesis, 00:22:14.66\00:22:17.20 where those two camps emerge; 00:22:17.23\00:22:19.47 and in Revelation, how they wrap up. 00:22:19.50\00:22:21.34 It's like a sandwich board. 00:22:21.37\00:22:22.74 Genesis sets the table for understanding 00:22:22.77\00:22:24.44 what's wrong with us. 00:22:24.47\00:22:26.07 Revelation shows how God is going to wind that all down. 00:22:26.11\00:22:29.74 >>Eric: So, again, we're seeing samples in Genesis. 00:22:29.78\00:22:32.08 It's the 101 course, but we expound on it as we go through. 00:22:32.11\00:22:37.79 You mentioned something very significant, 00:22:37.82\00:22:39.49 I think, in this week's lesson. It's about cultures. 00:22:39.52\00:22:42.82 Cultures change, but the core issues don't change. 00:22:42.86\00:22:46.93 How are the big issues that we're looking at 00:22:46.96\00:22:49.30 right now relevant today? 00:22:49.33\00:22:52.50 >>Shawn: Yeah, who you are-- I mean, yeah, culture changes, 00:22:52.53\00:22:55.70 and I know that we have a tendency 00:22:55.74\00:22:57.17 to make fun of our grandparents. 00:22:57.21\00:22:58.74 In my day, we were making fun of our grand-- 00:22:58.77\00:23:00.14 "They can't program a VCR." 00:23:00.18\00:23:02.31 Yeah, but they went through the Great Depression, 00:23:02.34\00:23:05.91 and they went through a world war, 00:23:05.95\00:23:07.68 and they understood the deep existential issues 00:23:07.72\00:23:10.22 that human beings face in very tangible ways. 00:23:10.25\00:23:12.85 Those don't change. 00:23:12.89\00:23:14.99 "Who am I? What does my life mean?" 00:23:15.02\00:23:17.93 None of that changes. "Why do I have to die? 00:23:17.96\00:23:20.66 "Why is there suffering in this world? 00:23:20.70\00:23:23.37 What's keeping chaos from taking over the world?" 00:23:23.40\00:23:26.47 You know, "who's gonna hold the future for us?" 00:23:26.50\00:23:30.94 Those don't change at all. 00:23:30.97\00:23:34.58 And one of the biggest issues that you find 00:23:34.61\00:23:36.44 in the book of Genesis-- 00:23:36.48\00:23:38.15 we'll only have time for half a second to look at this, 00:23:38.18\00:23:41.02 but maybe you can take this ball and run with it. 00:23:41.05\00:23:44.12 If you look at the temptation of the devil 00:23:44.15\00:23:46.29 in Genesis, chapter 3, where it says, you know-- 00:23:46.32\00:23:51.43 this is verse 1: "Did God actually say, 00:23:51.46\00:23:53.70 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" 00:23:53.73\00:23:57.03 I was reading a Hebrew rabbi and some of the medieval rabbis 00:23:57.07\00:24:01.30 a while ago, and they are in concurrence 00:24:01.34\00:24:05.11 that that's not the best translation in the English. 00:24:05.14\00:24:07.61 The best translation is "Even if," 00:24:07.64\00:24:09.94 not "Did God actually say?" 00:24:09.98\00:24:11.51 Yeah, he's raising questions. It's the devil's tactic. 00:24:11.55\00:24:15.08 But a literal translation of what the devil says 00:24:15.12\00:24:17.12 would be, "Even if God said, 00:24:17.15\00:24:18.92 'Do not eat from the trees of the garden'"--that's it. 00:24:18.95\00:24:22.32 Dot, dot, dot, and it trails off. 00:24:22.36\00:24:23.83 "Even if God said that." 00:24:23.86\00:24:25.16 In other words, God said, "Do not eat from the tree." 00:24:25.19\00:24:30.27 So what? And the devil's looking around. 00:24:30.30\00:24:32.73 It's like, "Look, animals are eating from the tree." 00:24:32.77\00:24:35.30 Remember, we just had a scene where Adam is saying-- 00:24:35.34\00:24:39.57 God says to Adam, "Go find a spouse." 00:24:39.61\00:24:41.51 Here's a hippo. Here's a zebra. 00:24:41.54\00:24:42.84 Here's a--that makes no sense, that story, 00:24:42.88\00:24:44.81 except for the fact that God has Adam realize, 00:24:44.85\00:24:48.78 "There's no partner for me here. 00:24:48.82\00:24:50.12 I am not like the animals. We function differently." 00:24:50.15\00:24:54.12 And the devil shows up as an animal and says, 00:24:54.16\00:24:55.86 "Well, even if God said, 'Don't eat from the tree,' 00:24:55.89\00:24:57.46 "look at these animals. They'd eat from it. 00:24:57.49\00:24:59.63 Their passions say, 'Do that.' Didn't God also make them?" 00:24:59.66\00:25:03.06 Yeah, but human beings stand apart from the animals. 00:25:03.10\00:25:05.63 They get to operate by instinct. 00:25:05.67\00:25:07.34 They don't have to plan for the future. They don't have 00:25:07.37\00:25:09.27 to operate within the confines of God's moral law. 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.91 God says, "Yeah, you also get to operate by passion." 00:25:11.94\00:25:15.48 And I'm glad because, you know, I'd probably starve to death 00:25:15.51\00:25:18.45 and never have children if passion wasn't a part 00:25:18.48\00:25:20.45 of who I am. 00:25:20.48\00:25:21.78 But God expects human beings to temper it with what He said. 00:25:21.82\00:25:25.29 We don't operate on our gut. 00:25:25.32\00:25:28.09 We don't operate just on our reason, 00:25:28.12\00:25:29.96 just on our gathered data through our senses. 00:25:29.99\00:25:32.63 God says, "Don't eat from that tree. 00:25:32.66\00:25:34.96 My word trumps your passions." 00:25:35.00\00:25:37.27 There is nothing wrong with an animal eating from that. 00:25:37.30\00:25:39.80 It wasn't poisonous. 00:25:39.83\00:25:41.67 God is setting the table, saying, "You're not an animal." 00:25:41.70\00:25:44.21 Now, look at the world we live in today. 00:25:44.24\00:25:45.57 That suddenly makes a lot of sense. 00:25:45.61\00:25:46.91 What do we do? We're entirely driven by passion. 00:25:46.94\00:25:49.71 "I am what I feel like I am." No, you're not. 00:25:49.74\00:25:52.58 You are what God says you are. You were made in His image. 00:25:52.61\00:25:56.22 "My gut tells me to do this, and I find my own truth. 00:25:56.25\00:25:59.62 I have my own narrative"-- the postmodern anthem. 00:25:59.65\00:26:02.12 No, you don't. No, you don't. 00:26:02.16\00:26:04.83 Your reason is important, but it needs to be tempered 00:26:04.86\00:26:07.30 by what God has revealed, 00:26:07.30\00:26:08.93 and you build your experience of this world on what He has said. 00:26:08.96\00:26:13.27 That issue has not only not changed; 00:26:13.30\00:26:16.27 it's become more obvious as we get down 00:26:16.30\00:26:18.34 into the 21st century. 00:26:18.37\00:26:19.67 We're driven entirely by our passions. 00:26:19.71\00:26:21.54 >>Eric: And we're seeing the results of that. 00:26:21.58\00:26:23.95 And it's frightening, to say the very least. 00:26:23.98\00:26:27.28 We don't have much time at all. >>Shawn: No, we don't. 00:26:27.32\00:26:29.95 >>Eric: But touch very quickly on this idea 00:26:29.98\00:26:32.79 of we look for things new and exciting and so forth, 00:26:32.82\00:26:35.92 but how do we stay excited 00:26:35.96\00:26:37.86 without abandoning what's tried and true? 00:26:37.89\00:26:40.36 >>Shawn: Yeah, and we only have seconds, 00:26:40.40\00:26:41.96 but some people might remember "The Bible Code." 00:26:42.00\00:26:44.33 You know, the book came out-- 00:26:44.37\00:26:45.87 hey, equidistant lettering, and they're digging in, 00:26:45.90\00:26:48.27 like, "If you just take every 13th letter, 00:26:48.30\00:26:50.61 you get a special message from God"-- 00:26:50.64\00:26:52.61 except that you can do that with "Moby Dick." 00:26:52.64\00:26:54.54 Somebody ran that book through a computer, 00:26:54.58\00:26:56.01 and it also generated results. 00:26:56.04\00:26:58.55 There's plenty in here that is new and exciting 00:26:58.58\00:27:01.15 if you get a good foundation first. 00:27:01.18\00:27:03.39 Get the good foundation. 00:27:03.42\00:27:04.72 Then what's new and exciting agrees with what is old. 00:27:04.75\00:27:07.29 If you're after just what is novel and exciting, 00:27:07.32\00:27:10.23 trying to turn heads, 00:27:10.26\00:27:12.36 then you're not much better than the addict 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.46 who needs something new and exciting every day 00:27:14.46\00:27:16.56 to get, you know, the serotonin and the-- 00:27:16.60\00:27:19.37 and all the other hormones spiking. 00:27:19.40\00:27:21.64 No, no, stick with what is tried and true, and there's plenty. 00:27:21.67\00:27:25.94 You will not finish, I promise you, 00:27:25.97\00:27:27.58 You will not finish exploring who God is. 00:27:27.61\00:27:29.94 >>Eric: Shawn, thank you for helping lead us 00:27:29.98\00:27:31.45 through today's lesson, and thank you for joining us. 00:27:31.48\00:27:33.95 We look forward to seeing you again as we continue 00:27:33.98\00:27:35.95 this journey through how to understand and study 00:27:35.98\00:27:38.62 the prophecies of the Bible next time we come together 00:27:38.65\00:27:41.36 here on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:41.39\00:27:44.36 [uplifting music] 00:27:44.39\00:27:48.36 [uplifting music] 00:28:24.97\00:28:26.94 [Captions provided by Aberdeen Captioning www.abercap.com] 00:28:26.97\00:28:29.97
