¤¤¤ 00:00:01.30\00:00:04.30 ¤¤¤ 00:00:12.97\00:00:14.94 >>Eric Flickinger: Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:14.98\00:00:16.28 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:16.31\00:00:18.11 We're glad to have you back again with us this week. 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.15 We're looking at lesson number 9, 00:00:20.18\00:00:22.48 "Blessed Is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord." 00:00:22.52\00:00:25.35 An exciting week this week. 00:00:25.39\00:00:27.76 We're going to be looking at someone very, very important, 00:00:27.79\00:00:31.69 and we're glad that you're with us. 00:00:31.73\00:00:33.13 Let's begin today with prayer. 00:00:33.16\00:00:34.83 Father, we ask that You'll be with us 00:00:34.83\00:00:36.50 as we open Your Word once again 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.17 and help us to see someone very significant 00:00:38.20\00:00:40.70 in the Psalms as we study today. 00:00:40.74\00:00:43.34 We thank You for hearing and answering our prayer, 00:00:43.37\00:00:45.34 in Jesus' name, amen. 00:00:45.37\00:00:47.84 Well, this week, as before throughout this quarter, 00:00:47.88\00:00:51.11 we have the author of this quarter's 00:00:51.15\00:00:52.65 "Sabbath School" lesson, Dr. Dragoslava Santrac. 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.08 And we're excited to have her here again this week. 00:00:56.12\00:00:58.42 She has an extensive knowledge in Old Testament 00:00:58.45\00:01:01.49 and especially in the book of Psalms. 00:01:01.52\00:01:04.46 Slava, welcome back. 00:01:04.49\00:01:05.79 >>Dragoslava Santrac: Thank you, Eric. 00:01:05.83\00:01:07.13 >>Eric: So, this week is probably 00:01:07.13\00:01:08.53 one of the most significant weeks. 00:01:08.56\00:01:10.37 They're all very important, but we're looking at someone 00:01:10.40\00:01:12.67 very important this week, 00:01:12.70\00:01:14.17 someone that we don't want to miss 00:01:14.20\00:01:15.50 as we go through the Psalms. 00:01:15.54\00:01:17.77 You mentioned earlier in one of our previous studies 00:01:17.81\00:01:22.01 that the Psalms are really people's prayers to God, 00:01:22.04\00:01:26.18 but they're also inspired prayers about Jesus 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.12 or about God's revelation to His people. 00:01:29.15\00:01:32.75 Where do we see Jesus in the Psalms? 00:01:32.79\00:01:37.63 He is--He's the one that the Bible is all about. 00:01:37.66\00:01:41.13 We know He appears in the Psalms, 00:01:41.16\00:01:43.13 but how do we see Him in here, 00:01:43.16\00:01:45.37 and where can we pick Him up along the way? 00:01:45.40\00:01:47.94 >>Dragoslava: Well, everything we have studied thus far 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.57 through all these previous weeks 00:01:50.61\00:01:52.77 inevitably leads to Jesus Christ. 00:01:52.81\00:01:56.54 We spoke about Creation, and the world was created 00:01:56.58\00:02:00.22 through Him and for Him. 00:02:00.25\00:02:02.58 We spoke about the glorious King and Judge 00:02:02.62\00:02:05.79 and the redemption and mercy, covenantal faithfulness. 00:02:05.82\00:02:10.93 Well, all of that, 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.59 all those themes are about Jesus 00:02:12.63\00:02:15.16 and are possible and made available to us 00:02:15.20\00:02:18.40 only because of Him, but--and through Him-- 00:02:18.43\00:02:22.27 but this week, we are particularly focusing 00:02:22.30\00:02:25.47 on those psalms that, in a remarkably accurate way, 00:02:25.51\00:02:30.25 describe and reveal details of Jesus's incarnate life 00:02:30.28\00:02:36.08 when He came as our Savior to this world. 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.29 And reading about the prophecies 00:02:39.32\00:02:41.96 that were written hundreds years before their fulfillment 00:02:41.99\00:02:46.70 and how they are fulfilled in Jesus with such accuracy 00:02:46.73\00:02:50.37 gives me new encouragement and reassures me 00:02:50.40\00:02:54.60 in the veracity and reliability of the Word of God. 00:02:54.64\00:02:59.94 >>Eric: Well, we're gonna take a look at some of those. 00:03:00.04\00:03:02.28 Where should we begin? 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.61 >>Dragoslava: Yes, well, I'm very excited for us 00:03:03.65\00:03:06.15 to do this comparison between the promises 00:03:06.18\00:03:11.65 in the Psalms and how they were fulfilled 00:03:11.69\00:03:14.12 in our Lord Jesus in the New Testament. 00:03:14.16\00:03:17.39 So here we are talking about two types of predictions. 00:03:17.43\00:03:21.46 The first are the direct prophetic fulfillments, 00:03:21.50\00:03:26.13 and the second type are 00:03:26.17\00:03:28.27 the typological fulfillments in Jesus. 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.97 So let's dive in, in some examples 00:03:32.01\00:03:35.94 of the direct prophetic fulfillments, 00:03:35.98\00:03:39.58 or predictions or announcements, about Jesus. 00:03:39.61\00:03:43.28 If you agree, Eric, 00:03:43.32\00:03:45.52 I would like to read a promise or prophecy 00:03:45.55\00:03:48.72 from the psalm, and then, if you would be so kind, 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.93 to find a fulfillment in the New Testament. 00:03:51.96\00:03:54.93 >>Eric: Certainly. 00:03:54.96\00:03:56.26 >>Dragoslava: It's an exciting journey. 00:03:56.30\00:03:57.97 So, the first example is about Christ's deity, 00:03:58.00\00:04:03.30 and we read in Psalm 45, verses 6 and 7, 00:04:03.34\00:04:08.98 "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; 00:04:09.01\00:04:13.11 "a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 00:04:13.15\00:04:17.42 "You love righteousness and hate wickedness; 00:04:17.45\00:04:21.92 "therefore God, Your God, has anointed You 00:04:21.96\00:04:26.66 with the oil of gladness more than Your companions." 00:04:26.70\00:04:31.07 Clearly here, the psalmist is not talking about himself. 00:04:31.10\00:04:35.14 He's addressing someone: 00:04:35.17\00:04:37.34 "You, God"-- "Your God has anointed You." 00:04:37.37\00:04:41.98 So it's a little bit confusing. 00:04:42.01\00:04:43.81 Who is this, if this is not the psalmist, obviously? 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.92 Who is this divine person 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.32 anointed to do this marvelous work of righteousness? 00:04:50.35\00:04:54.69 >>Eric: Well, maybe we should find out. 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.49 >>Dragoslava: In Hebrews--yes-- in Hebrews, 00:04:56.52\00:04:57.96 chapter 1, I believe. 00:04:57.99\00:04:59.46 >>Eric: In Hebrews, chapter 1, verses 8 and9, it says, 00:04:59.49\00:05:04.70 "But to the Son He says: 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.37 "'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; 00:05:06.40\00:05:08.97 "'a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 00:05:09.00\00:05:12.37 "'You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; 00:05:12.41\00:05:15.64 "'therefore God, Your God, has anointed You 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.75 with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.'" 00:05:18.78\00:05:22.05 >>Dragoslava: Mm, so here the psalm 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.82 and the book of Hebrews speak about someone 00:05:23.85\00:05:26.29 who is like God and is allowed to be called God 00:05:26.32\00:05:31.03 because that's what He is in His essence of His being, 00:05:31.06\00:05:34.86 and at the same time He's God's Son, beloved Son. 00:05:34.93\00:05:38.73 Well, the next example, perhaps, let's see, 00:05:38.77\00:05:42.10 in Psalm, chapter 2, verse 7. 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.77 It's a prophecy about the sonship of Jesus, 00:05:44.81\00:05:48.58 Jesus as the Son of God. 00:05:48.61\00:05:52.08 Verse 7, it says in Psalm 2, "I will declare the decree: 00:05:52.11\00:05:57.95 "The Lord has said to me, 'You are My Son, 00:05:57.99\00:06:02.52 today I have begotten You.'" 00:06:02.56\00:06:06.03 So here the psalmist speaks about the Son, and obviously, 00:06:06.06\00:06:10.87 again, this is not the psalmist himself 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.30 because this goes beyond a human creature 00:06:13.34\00:06:19.17 who can be identified in this text. 00:06:19.21\00:06:22.84 And maybe in the New Testament we can find fulfillment. 00:06:22.88\00:06:27.52 >>Eric: We have a couple of verses here. 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.85 Matthew 3, verse 17 says, 00:06:28.88\00:06:31.49 "And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 00:06:31.52\00:06:33.89 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'" 00:06:33.92\00:06:37.76 And that's a very familiar text to, 00:06:37.79\00:06:39.33 I think, just about every Christian, 00:06:39.36\00:06:40.76 at Jesus' baptism, and here, of course, it calls Him 00:06:40.80\00:06:43.70 His Son, in whom He is "well pleased." 00:06:43.73\00:06:46.03 Also in the book of Hebrews, Hebrews, chapter 1, verse 5, 00:06:46.07\00:06:50.01 it says, "For to which of the angels did He ever say: 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.81 "'You are my Son, today I have begotten You'? 00:06:52.84\00:06:55.84 "And again: 'I will be to Him a Father, 00:06:55.88\00:06:58.38 and He shall be to me a Son'?" 00:06:58.41\00:07:00.75 >>Dragoslava: So this is a Messianic prophecy 00:07:00.78\00:07:03.08 right there in the Psalms. 00:07:03.12\00:07:05.49 Then we have many other examples. 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.42 Perhaps I should mention now the prophecy about resurrection 00:07:08.46\00:07:13.29 because the text in the Psalms, 00:07:13.33\00:07:15.06 and the ones you read in the Hebrews, 00:07:15.10\00:07:17.23 mention that God has begotten His Son. 00:07:17.27\00:07:22.87 So some people may get the idea, 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.57 "Oh, so Jesus was created by God. 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.44 "Is that what the prophecy in Psalms says? 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.98 Is He someone-- somehow lower than God?" 00:07:30.01\00:07:33.45 That's obviously not what the prophecies meant. 00:07:33.48\00:07:36.85 This is a prophecy about Jesus's resurrection, 00:07:36.89\00:07:40.89 and perhaps I can read Psalm 16, verse 10-- 00:07:40.92\00:07:45.73 which is very similar to the one 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.53 we read previously in Psalm 2-- 16, verse 10 says, 00:07:48.56\00:07:54.77 "For You will not leave my soul in Sheol"--or in the grave-- 00:07:54.80\00:07:59.77 "nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:07:59.81\00:08:04.45 Psalm 2:7, about God saying, "I have begotten You" to Jesus, 00:08:04.48\00:08:09.75 and Psalm 16 are about resurrection, 00:08:09.78\00:08:13.76 as we can see in the book of Acts. 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.96 >>Eric: So in Acts, chapter 2, verses 25-28, 00:08:16.99\00:08:20.63 it says, "For David says concerning Him: 00:08:20.66\00:08:24.00 "'I foresaw the Lord always before my face, 00:08:24.03\00:08:26.74 "'for He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 00:08:26.77\00:08:29.97 "'Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; 00:08:30.01\00:08:33.34 "'moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 00:08:33.38\00:08:36.21 "'For You will not leave my soul in Hades, 00:08:36.24\00:08:39.21 "'nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 00:08:39.25\00:08:42.35 "'You have made known to me the ways of life; 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.92 You will make me full of joy in Your presence.'" 00:08:44.95\00:08:48.26 >>Dragoslava: And we find a similar fulfillment 00:08:48.29\00:08:50.99 in chapter 13. 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.23 >>Eric: It says, "God has fulfilled this for us 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.26 "their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. 00:08:55.30\00:08:58.33 "As it is also written in the second Psalm: 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.87 "'You are My Son, today I have begotten You.' 00:09:00.90\00:09:04.71 "And that He raised Him from the dead, 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.61 "no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 00:09:06.64\00:09:10.41 'I will give you the sure mercies of David.'" 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.68 And verse 35: "Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 00:09:13.72\00:09:17.19 'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.'" 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.95 >>Dragoslava: Yes, so we see these prophecies 00:09:19.99\00:09:21.79 are about Jesus's resurrection, that God has, through Jesus, 00:09:21.82\00:09:27.03 created a new life as a gift and promise of resurrection 00:09:27.10\00:09:32.43 for all those who believe in Jesus 00:09:32.47\00:09:35.27 and trust in God through Him. 00:09:35.30\00:09:37.54 This is a wonderful promise. 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.54 Perhaps another one about Jesus's zeal for God's house: 00:09:39.57\00:09:46.61 In Psalm 69, verse 9, 00:09:46.65\00:09:50.62 we read that Jesus loves God's temple, 00:09:50.65\00:09:56.96 and those services represent a message of His salvation. 00:09:56.99\00:10:01.46 It says, "Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, 00:10:01.50\00:10:06.40 and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me." 00:10:06.43\00:10:11.71 And this is a prophecy about Christ. 00:10:11.74\00:10:14.08 >>Eric: And we find the fulfillment over in John. 00:10:14.11\00:10:15.91 John, chapter 2, verse 17 says, 00:10:15.94\00:10:19.18 "Then His disciples remembered that it [is] written, 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.92 'Zeal for Your house has eaten me up.'" 00:10:21.95\00:10:24.95 So over and over, we're seeing these psalms referenced 00:10:24.99\00:10:28.02 over in the New Testament, 00:10:28.06\00:10:29.96 seeing the connections between the prophecy 00:10:29.99\00:10:33.13 and then the fulfillment in Jesus' life. 00:10:33.16\00:10:35.40 >>Dragoslava: Yes, and what is interesting, 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.47 we find also prophecies that Jesus Himself 00:10:37.50\00:10:41.30 did not have control over their fulfillment. 00:10:41.34\00:10:44.91 Let's say this one about the zeal. Someone could say, 00:10:44.94\00:10:48.91 "Well, Jesus could have read that 00:10:48.94\00:10:50.58 "and kind of, like, portrayed that zeal 00:10:50.61\00:10:54.08 in order to show the fulfillment of the psalm." 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.05 But there are so many examples where other people-- 00:10:57.09\00:11:01.62 therefore Jesus did not control that part of fulfillment. 00:11:01.66\00:11:05.43 For example, when the soldiers divided Jesus's garments 00:11:05.46\00:11:10.93 when Jesus was crucified, in Psalm 22:18, 00:11:10.97\00:11:15.77 we read exactly about that. 00:11:15.80\00:11:18.84 Psalm 22, verse 18, it says, 00:11:18.87\00:11:23.78 "They divide my garments among them, 00:11:23.81\00:11:26.98 and for my clothing they cast lots." 00:11:27.02\00:11:30.62 And for that, we do not see any instances 00:11:30.65\00:11:33.59 in the King David's life, and-- 00:11:33.62\00:11:37.16 but we find a fulfillment in Matthew 27. 00:11:37.19\00:11:42.26 >>Eric: "Then they crucified Him, 00:11:42.30\00:11:43.60 "and divided His garments, casting lots, 00:11:43.63\00:11:46.00 "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: 00:11:46.03\00:11:48.67 "'They divided my garments among them, 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.87 and for my clothing they cast lots.'" 00:11:50.91\00:11:53.68 >>Dragoslava: And these were Roman soldiers 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.44 who were most likely unaware of the prophecy in the Psalms, 00:11:55.48\00:11:59.18 but God's insight and providence foresaw these details. 00:11:59.21\00:12:03.45 And these prophecies were given for us, 00:12:03.49\00:12:06.79 for God's people, to strengthen our trust in God's Word. 00:12:06.82\00:12:10.69 So if these were fulfilled, 00:12:10.73\00:12:12.73 then those who are still to be fulfilled, 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.43 we have confidence that they will. 00:12:15.46\00:12:17.83 >>Eric: And there's no way that He could have impacted that, 00:12:17.87\00:12:20.87 that, by no choice of His, could He have swayed things 00:12:20.90\00:12:24.77 in His direction. 00:12:24.81\00:12:25.94 It was completely dissociated from any of His actions 00:12:25.97\00:12:29.28 or activities, yeah. 00:12:29.31\00:12:30.61 >>Dragoslava: Yes, and we have also a prophecy 00:12:30.65\00:12:32.55 about Jesus's betrayal. 00:12:32.58\00:12:35.32 Again, something that, heh, probably the betrayer 00:12:35.35\00:12:39.15 didn't know he was doing, 00:12:39.19\00:12:41.32 but he was fulfilling the prophecy in Psalm 41 in 9. 00:12:41.36\00:12:47.10 It says, "Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, 00:12:47.13\00:12:52.33 who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me." 00:12:52.37\00:12:57.77 >>Eric: And we find the fulfillment over 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.11 in the book of Luke. Luke, chapter 22, verse 48 says, 00:12:59.14\00:13:02.71 "But Jesus said to him, 'Judas, 00:13:02.74\00:13:04.45 are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'" 00:13:04.48\00:13:06.78 >>Dragoslava: Yes. >>Eric: So nothing that 00:13:06.82\00:13:08.28 He could have done to do that, 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.89 but Judas fulfilled that prophecy. 00:13:10.92\00:13:13.19 >>Dragoslava: Yes, and now the prophecies 00:13:13.22\00:13:15.66 about Jesus's priesthood and kingship, 00:13:15.69\00:13:19.06 the full fulfillment of that is still in the future. 00:13:19.09\00:13:23.26 But, Eric, I believe we can all agree 00:13:23.30\00:13:26.20 that all these fulfilled prophecies serve 00:13:26.23\00:13:29.60 as a firm foundation for the hope and the fulfillment 00:13:29.64\00:13:33.11 of these future ones. >>Eric: Very much so. 00:13:33.14\00:13:36.48 You know, we're going to continue taking a look 00:13:36.51\00:13:38.51 at the prophecies of Jesus 00:13:38.55\00:13:40.92 and their fulfillment when we come back, 00:13:40.95\00:13:42.85 but I want to encourage you, if you haven't done so already, 00:13:42.88\00:13:45.22 make sure that you pick up the companion book 00:13:45.25\00:13:47.62 to this quarter's "Sabbath School" lesson. 00:13:47.66\00:13:49.72 You can find it at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:49.76\00:13:52.96 Again, that's at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:52.99\00:13:55.16 It's on the book of Psalms, and you will be blessed. 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.03 We're gonna come back in just a few moments and look 00:13:58.07\00:14:00.50 at some of the typological fulfillments as well. 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.10 We'll be right back. 00:14:03.14\00:14:04.27 ¤¤¤ 00:14:04.31\00:14:06.98 >>John Bradshaw: They are some of the most famous words 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.35 ever spoken: "The Lord is my shepherd; 00:14:10.38\00:14:14.08 I shall not want," written by a former shepherd. 00:14:14.12\00:14:18.15 King David wrote the 23rd Psalm. 00:14:18.19\00:14:20.86 Don't miss "Great Chapters of the Bible: Psalm 23" 00:14:20.89\00:14:25.89 as we look at this beautiful psalm. 00:14:25.93\00:14:28.43 David draws on his experience as a shepherd 00:14:28.46\00:14:31.27 and draws on the depths of his relationship, 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.00 his sometimes rocky relationship, 00:14:34.04\00:14:36.94 with the God of heaven. 00:14:36.97\00:14:38.87 David speaks about God as his shepherd. 00:14:38.91\00:14:41.44 He says, "I shall not want." 00:14:41.48\00:14:43.95 He said that God, his shepherd, 00:14:43.98\00:14:45.78 makes him to "lie down in green pastures" 00:14:45.81\00:14:48.25 and leads him "beside still waters." 00:14:48.28\00:14:51.59 See a beautiful picture of God, the picture David saw: 00:14:51.62\00:14:54.72 God as shepherd, as carer, as provider. 00:14:54.76\00:14:59.39 Don't miss "Great Chapters of the Bible: Psalm 23" 00:14:59.43\00:15:04.27 on It Is Written TV. 00:15:04.30\00:15:06.63 >>John: You know that at It Is Written we are serious 00:15:08.87\00:15:10.97 about studying the Word of God, 00:15:11.01\00:15:12.61 and we encourage you to be serious as well. 00:15:12.64\00:15:15.28 Well, here's what you do if you wanna dig deeper 00:15:15.31\00:15:17.51 into God's Word: 00:15:17.55\00:15:18.85 Go to itiswritten.study 00:15:18.88\00:15:20.72 for the It Is Written Bible Study Guides online, 00:15:20.75\00:15:23.59 25 in-depth Bible studies 00:15:23.62\00:15:25.45 that will take you through the major teachings 00:15:25.49\00:15:27.32 of the Bible. 00:15:27.36\00:15:28.66 You'll be blessed, and it's something 00:15:28.69\00:15:30.26 you'll want to tell others about as well. 00:15:30.29\00:15:32.16 itiswritten.study. 00:15:32.19\00:15:33.80 Go further: itiswritten.study. 00:15:33.83\00:15:36.63 ¤¤¤ 00:15:38.47\00:15:43.27 >>Eric: Welcome back to "Sabbath School," 00:15:43.30\00:15:44.64 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:15:44.67\00:15:46.37 We're continuing to take a look at Jesus in the Psalms. 00:15:46.41\00:15:50.78 Slava, when we were together just a few moments ago, 00:15:50.81\00:15:53.45 we were looking at some of the very literal 00:15:53.48\00:15:55.05 prophetic fulfillments of Jesus. 00:15:55.08\00:15:56.92 But there are also some typological fulfillments 00:15:56.95\00:15:59.29 of the prophecies in Psalms with Jesus. 00:15:59.32\00:16:02.96 What can you share with us about those? 00:16:02.99\00:16:04.73 >>Dragoslava: Yes, well, the typological predictions 00:16:04.76\00:16:08.66 or prophecies are called typological 00:16:08.70\00:16:11.50 because we don't find a direct fulfillment in the New Testament 00:16:11.53\00:16:17.41 in a sense that New Testament authors 00:16:17.44\00:16:19.87 quoted these psalms or biblical texts 00:16:19.91\00:16:23.88 like in the previous instances that we read. 00:16:23.91\00:16:27.28 However, when we read the circumstances 00:16:27.32\00:16:30.25 and descriptions presented in these psalms, 00:16:30.29\00:16:34.49 it's very clear that no one, no Israel's king, 00:16:34.52\00:16:39.26 ever fulfilled them. And they find, therefore, 00:16:39.29\00:16:42.43 their fulfillment in Jesus through His actions and words. 00:16:42.46\00:16:45.70 For example, Psalms 24, 25, 72, 101, 00:16:45.73\00:16:52.31 they all speak about the ideal King 00:16:52.34\00:16:55.81 who does God's will perfectly, who shares justice to all, 00:16:55.84\00:17:01.22 and we all know that King David and maybe King Solomon-- 00:17:01.25\00:17:05.12 who are taken, both of them, as the best examples 00:17:05.15\00:17:10.09 of the ancient Israelis' king-- they weren't perfect 00:17:10.13\00:17:15.00 in no way and, very often, do injust things and-- 00:17:15.03\00:17:20.44 but the One who does all that 00:17:20.47\00:17:22.97 and who fulfills them is Jesus Christ. 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.91 Then the Psalms, like Psalm 88 and 102, 00:17:25.94\00:17:30.41 are the prayers of the suffering servant of God. 00:17:30.45\00:17:34.08 And I especially love Psalm 88. 00:17:34.12\00:17:39.72 No one can claim the depth of this suffering, only Jesus. 00:17:39.75\00:17:45.29 And when we read this prayer, we really come close to Christ, 00:17:45.33\00:17:49.83 and we get a glimpse into the suffering He endured 00:17:49.86\00:17:53.70 for the sake of the world. 00:17:53.74\00:17:55.87 So, all these psalms find their, I would say, 00:17:55.90\00:17:59.81 typological fulfillment in Christ. 00:17:59.84\00:18:03.28 >>Eric: And so, He is that perfect fulfillment, 00:18:03.31\00:18:05.81 that no human being could have stepped 00:18:05.85\00:18:08.65 into those shoes, but He, being the perfect individual-- 00:18:08.68\00:18:12.35 >>Dragoslava: Yes, yes. >>Eric: ...most certainly does. 00:18:12.39\00:18:13.82 >>Dragoslava: A number of New Testament people served 00:18:13.86\00:18:17.23 as types of Christ, and type would mean, like, 00:18:17.26\00:18:21.10 an image or a model or an illustration, 00:18:21.13\00:18:25.80 like Moses, David, and others. 00:18:25.83\00:18:28.90 However, they're only a small shadow 00:18:28.94\00:18:33.04 of the grand and glorious picture 00:18:33.07\00:18:36.71 of who Jesus really is 00:18:36.75\00:18:38.71 and we read in the gospels about Christ. 00:18:38.75\00:18:42.65 >>Eric: So it's nice to have those types, but, 00:18:42.68\00:18:44.72 really, they're just, like you said, 00:18:44.75\00:18:46.39 a shadow of the real, of the reality. 00:18:46.42\00:18:49.09 Well, when we take a look at the Psalms, 00:18:49.12\00:18:51.63 we're seeing Jesus in here clearly throughout. 00:18:51.66\00:18:55.00 How do the Psalms bring us closer to Christ? 00:18:55.03\00:18:59.07 It's all well and good to see Him in there, 00:18:59.10\00:19:01.20 but it doesn't do us much good unless we are-- 00:19:01.24\00:19:03.61 unless we can connect with Him. 00:19:03.64\00:19:06.44 How do the Psalms help us to do that? 00:19:06.47\00:19:07.94 >>Dragoslava: Yes, exactly. I really appreciate 00:19:07.98\00:19:10.28 that you mentioned the word "connect" with Him. 00:19:10.31\00:19:13.48 And I mentioned, I think, this earlier, 00:19:13.52\00:19:16.22 that the Psalms are here not just to inform us 00:19:16.25\00:19:20.52 but to transform us as well. And in this case, 00:19:20.56\00:19:24.96 they're here to not just inform us about Jesus, 00:19:24.99\00:19:28.36 but connect us with Jesus. 00:19:28.40\00:19:30.70 And that's the final goal, that through these psalms, 00:19:30.73\00:19:34.10 these wonderful prayers, we get to know our Lord Jesus 00:19:34.14\00:19:37.87 heart to heart. 00:19:37.91\00:19:39.94 And when we pray His prayers, 00:19:39.97\00:19:42.44 that's the place where we meet with Christ heart to heart. 00:19:42.48\00:19:47.08 And I'm amazed to know that the last words 00:19:47.12\00:19:51.69 our Lord Jesus spoke on the cross 00:19:51.72\00:19:54.46 came from the Psalms. 00:19:54.49\00:19:56.52 Psalm 22, verse 1: 00:19:56.56\00:19:58.93 "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" 00:19:58.96\00:20:03.26 It shows us that Jesus knew this psalm by heart 00:20:03.30\00:20:06.67 and that He prayed this psalm. 00:20:06.70\00:20:09.14 And at the hardest moment of His life, 00:20:09.17\00:20:11.81 He turned to God's Word and prayed. 00:20:11.84\00:20:14.54 And the very last words that Jesus spoke on the cross, 00:20:14.58\00:20:20.25 before He's breathing His last, came from Psalm 31:5. 00:20:20.28\00:20:26.12 Maybe we could read this verse. 00:20:26.15\00:20:28.72 The very last words that Jesus spoke 00:20:28.76\00:20:32.13 before giving up His breath came from a psalm, 00:20:32.16\00:20:36.93 Psalm 31, verse 5. 00:20:36.97\00:20:40.10 And it says, "Into Your hand I commit my spirit." 00:20:40.14\00:20:46.04 And when we read Luke, chapter 23, verse 46-- 00:20:46.07\00:20:51.61 >>Eric: It says, "And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, 00:20:51.65\00:20:54.55 "He said, 'Father, "into Your hands I commit my spirit."' 00:20:54.58\00:20:57.95 [And] having said this, He breathed His last." 00:20:57.99\00:21:00.99 >>Dragoslava: Yes, so you see, when I read Psalm 31, 00:21:01.02\00:21:05.23 I come with the words of Jesus, the last words that He spoke. 00:21:05.26\00:21:10.07 And that does bring me closer to Him, 00:21:10.10\00:21:12.97 closer to understanding Him, His love, His grace, 00:21:13.00\00:21:18.11 His great suffering for the world, for me. 00:21:18.14\00:21:21.48 And I cherish praying these prayers 00:21:21.51\00:21:24.41 along with my Lord Jesus. 00:21:24.45\00:21:27.35 >>Eric: So it seems like as we're reading 00:21:27.38\00:21:28.88 through the New Testament, 00:21:28.92\00:21:30.85 there are many references to the Psalms. 00:21:30.89\00:21:33.49 Of course, in many Bibles there are either column references 00:21:33.52\00:21:36.86 or references down at the bottom, 00:21:36.89\00:21:38.66 and a lot of those go back to the book of Psalms. 00:21:38.69\00:21:41.20 So these are evidences that the New Testament writers 00:21:41.23\00:21:44.90 are recognizing that Jesus 00:21:44.93\00:21:47.60 is the fulfillment of all these things, 00:21:47.64\00:21:49.27 that Jesus is very present in the book of Psalms, 00:21:49.30\00:21:51.77 and that He's-- 00:21:51.81\00:21:53.27 He should be very present in our lives as well. 00:21:53.31\00:21:57.25 So, more than simply saying, 00:21:57.28\00:21:59.31 "Oh yeah, there's a picture of Jesus in the Psalms 00:21:59.35\00:22:01.52 and here's a picture of Him in the New Testament," 00:22:01.55\00:22:03.42 it's not just there. It doesn't just exist, 00:22:03.45\00:22:06.62 but it should touch our heartstrings 00:22:06.65\00:22:09.79 and change our lives as well. 00:22:09.82\00:22:12.83 How might a person-- how might a person respond 00:22:12.86\00:22:16.13 when they see this picture of Jesus in the Psalms, 00:22:16.16\00:22:20.57 over here in the New Testament? 00:22:20.60\00:22:22.64 How would a person--how should a person respond to that? 00:22:22.67\00:22:26.27 >>Dragoslava: See, it's like when we read the Psalms, 00:22:26.31\00:22:29.41 it's as if we are reading Jesus's personal diary. 00:22:29.44\00:22:33.25 You know, it's in our personal diaries 00:22:33.28\00:22:36.42 we put our most innermost thoughts 00:22:36.45\00:22:40.06 and pleas and prayers, and when we read the Psalms, 00:22:40.09\00:22:44.26 we discover Jesus's heart. 00:22:44.29\00:22:46.90 And how do we respond to this great love 00:22:46.93\00:22:50.87 to this great faithfulness and commitment 00:22:50.90\00:22:54.44 but giving ourselves to Christ completely 00:22:54.47\00:22:58.57 in adoration and obedience, 00:22:58.61\00:23:01.24 in glorifying Him, in trusting Him fully, 00:23:01.28\00:23:04.58 and accepting His gift of salvation. 00:23:04.61\00:23:08.08 Eric, imagine you invite me to your birthday party, 00:23:08.12\00:23:12.52 and I sacrifice everything I have to buy you-- 00:23:12.55\00:23:17.96 to prepare you this wonderful gift. 00:23:17.99\00:23:21.10 And I come to your birthday party, 00:23:21.13\00:23:23.90 and I give you that gift and somehow you just, "Ahh"-- 00:23:23.93\00:23:28.30 you neglect it, you know. 00:23:28.34\00:23:30.11 What a waste, what a sorrow, you know, 00:23:30.14\00:23:33.01 and when I read the Psalms, 00:23:33.04\00:23:35.54 I have no other words but to say, "Lord, I am Yours. 00:23:35.58\00:23:40.25 You have redeemed me with Your precious blood." 00:23:40.28\00:23:43.55 That's the response that we, inevitably almost, 00:23:43.59\00:23:47.66 give to God when we meet with Christ 00:23:47.69\00:23:50.96 heart to heart in His prayers. 00:23:50.99\00:23:53.80 >>Eric: And you know, it's interesting you mention that. 00:23:53.83\00:23:56.43 That should be the response that we have, 00:23:56.46\00:23:58.67 but a great many people, they miss out on it. 00:23:58.70\00:24:01.34 They miss out on the opportunity on that connection 00:24:01.37\00:24:04.27 that Jesus wants to make with us 00:24:04.31\00:24:06.27 because they don't recognize Him for who He is, 00:24:06.31\00:24:09.98 that He's that one who was present so much 00:24:10.01\00:24:12.91 in Psalms and through the rest of the Old Testament and here 00:24:12.95\00:24:15.95 to give us hope. 00:24:15.98\00:24:18.62 If there's somebody today who's watching this program, 00:24:18.65\00:24:22.12 and they're looking for hope, 00:24:22.16\00:24:24.53 they believe in Jesus, but they don't see 00:24:24.56\00:24:29.33 how He can really change their lives, 00:24:29.36\00:24:32.93 what would you share with them to help them to see 00:24:32.97\00:24:35.50 that He is real, that He wants to have a relationship, 00:24:35.54\00:24:38.67 that He wants to be close, and that He wants to help? 00:24:38.71\00:24:40.71 >>Dragoslava: Yes, yes. 00:24:40.74\00:24:42.38 Well, I'm glad we read many psalms, 00:24:42.41\00:24:46.78 but perhaps Psalm 23 is the right word for you now. 00:24:46.82\00:24:51.89 It is the psalm about the good shepherd, 00:24:51.92\00:24:55.82 and Jesus said in the Gospel of John, 00:24:55.86\00:24:58.59 "I am the good shepherd. 00:24:58.63\00:25:01.20 The good shepherd [that lays down] His life for [His] sheep." 00:25:01.23\00:25:05.07 And no earthly shepherd ever does that, 00:25:05.10\00:25:08.77 but that's the kind of shepherd, that's the kind of God 00:25:08.80\00:25:11.87 our Lord Jesus is. 00:25:11.91\00:25:14.11 And here in Psalm 23, 00:25:14.14\00:25:16.28 there is an encouragement for you. 00:25:16.31\00:25:18.21 There is a call for you to seek God 00:25:18.25\00:25:21.25 and allow Him to reveal Himself to you, 00:25:21.28\00:25:24.85 to open your eyes to see His grace 00:25:24.89\00:25:28.22 and His presence in your life: 00:25:28.26\00:25:30.66 "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 00:25:30.69\00:25:35.43 "He makes me to lie down in green pastures; 00:25:35.46\00:25:39.47 "He leads me beside the still waters. 00:25:39.50\00:25:43.24 "He restores my soul; He leads me in the path of righteousness 00:25:43.27\00:25:48.51 for His name's sake." 00:25:48.54\00:25:50.85 I believe there are many good things 00:25:50.88\00:25:52.61 going on in your life, 00:25:52.65\00:25:54.22 and sometimes we take them for granted, 00:25:54.25\00:25:56.58 or we think it's just a coincidence. 00:25:56.62\00:25:59.62 But, my friend, rest assured it is the good shepherd 00:25:59.65\00:26:03.59 who leads you, who provides for you. 00:26:03.63\00:26:06.80 He's the one who will go with you 00:26:06.83\00:26:09.53 through the valley of the shadow of death. 00:26:09.56\00:26:12.23 He will be with you, and He's preparing 00:26:12.27\00:26:15.57 a table for you with blessings overflowing, 00:26:15.60\00:26:22.38 so that one day when you receive Him in your heart, 00:26:22.41\00:26:26.95 you may dwell in the house of the Lord 00:26:26.98\00:26:29.62 and enjoy His blessing and His fellowship forever. 00:26:29.65\00:26:34.92 >>Eric: Slava, it's amazing when we take a look 00:26:34.96\00:26:36.93 at the book of Psalms how much of Jesus 00:26:36.96\00:26:39.36 we can see there in things He did fulfill 00:26:39.39\00:26:42.96 and in things that we don't see a direct fulfillment 00:26:43.00\00:26:46.33 in the New Testament, but we know 00:26:46.37\00:26:48.64 that He ultimately is that fulfillment, 00:26:48.67\00:26:50.61 those typological fulfillments as well. 00:26:50.64\00:26:52.84 And that strengthens or should strengthen our relationship 00:26:52.87\00:26:57.51 with Him as well. 00:26:57.55\00:26:59.41 So, thank you for leading us through the book of Psalms 00:26:59.45\00:27:03.72 and helping us to see Jesus. 00:27:03.75\00:27:06.15 "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." 00:27:06.19\00:27:09.32 >>Dragoslava: Yes. >>Eric: And we trust 00:27:09.36\00:27:10.99 that you have been blessed as we have taken this journey 00:27:11.03\00:27:13.96 through many of the psalms today 00:27:14.00\00:27:16.46 and seen a clearer picture of Jesus in each of them, 00:27:16.50\00:27:21.34 because as we get to see Jesus, we have an opportunity 00:27:21.37\00:27:23.81 to connect with Him, to abide with Him, 00:27:23.84\00:27:29.01 and to grow in our relationship with Him. 00:27:29.04\00:27:31.45 And we hope that that's what will be taking place 00:27:31.48\00:27:33.35 in your life between now and when we come back again 00:27:33.38\00:27:36.35 next week. 00:27:36.38\00:27:37.69 We look forward to seeing you then 00:27:37.72\00:27:39.02 here on "Sabbath School," 00:27:39.05\00:27:40.49 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:40.52\00:27:42.96 ¤¤¤ 00:27:42.99\00:27:47.00 ¤¤¤ 00:28:24.97\00:28:26.94 [Captions provided by Aberdeen Captioning www.abercap.com] 00:28:26.97\00:28:29.80
