(uplifting theme music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:02.86 (music ends) 00:00:13.34\00:00:15.51 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.25 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:18.25\00:00:19.98 We're glad to have you back again today. 00:00:19.98\00:00:21.98 Well, this is lesson number 12, 00:00:21.98\00:00:25.09 the final lesson this quarter as we've been looking 00:00:25.09\00:00:28.32 at "Managing for the Master Till He Comes." 00:00:28.32\00:00:31.43 We've come quite a distance. 00:00:31.43\00:00:33.63 We've talked about a number of subjects along the way. 00:00:33.63\00:00:36.30 We've looked at success, we've looked at tithe, 00:00:36.30\00:00:38.37 we've looked at offerings, we've looked at 00:00:38.37\00:00:39.93 how to care for the poor, and today we're going to be taking 00:00:39.93\00:00:42.54 a look at the rewards of faithfulness. 00:00:42.54\00:00:46.07 What are the rewards that await those 00:00:46.07\00:00:48.81 who have been faithful stewards of all God has given them? 00:00:48.81\00:00:52.95 That's what we're gonna take a look at today. 00:00:52.95\00:00:54.82 With us again is the author 00:00:54.82\00:00:56.28 of the Sabbath school lesson, Ed Reid. 00:00:56.28\00:00:58.52 He is an ordained minister and also a licensed attorney. 00:00:58.52\00:01:03.49 He's been involved in stewardship for over 30 years, 00:01:04.76\00:01:07.00 and he has been a blessing as we've studied week by week. 00:01:07.00\00:01:11.17 Before we ask him about this week's lesson, though, 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.17 let's begin with prayer. 00:01:13.17\00:01:14.94 Father, we thank You again for being with us, 00:01:14.94\00:01:16.87 as You have for the last quarter, 00:01:16.87\00:01:19.11 and we ask that You'll bless us as we study 00:01:19.11\00:01:21.04 this final lesson in the series, 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.58 so that we can see what success truly looks like 00:01:23.58\00:01:26.82 and the rewards that You have for the faithful. 00:01:26.82\00:01:29.02 We thank You in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:29.02\00:01:31.99 Ed, thanks for being with us once again. 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.42 >>Well, we've had a good time together, 00:01:34.42\00:01:35.72 and thank you for inviting me back. 00:01:35.72\00:01:37.33 >>Oh, we're delighted to have you. 00:01:37.33\00:01:39.03 Let's talk about this week's lesson. 00:01:39.03\00:01:41.10 The memory text is from Matthew 25 and verse 21. 00:01:41.10\00:01:45.60 It says this: "His lord said to him, 'Well done, 00:01:45.60\00:01:48.47 "'good and faithful servant; you [are] faithful 00:01:48.47\00:01:51.01 "'over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. 00:01:51.01\00:01:55.44 Enter into the joy of your lord.'" 00:01:55.44\00:01:58.55 When we look at some of the stories, 00:01:58.55\00:01:59.85 as we have looked at them this quarter, 00:01:59.85\00:02:02.25 we think of people like Abraham, 00:02:02.25\00:02:03.95 we think of people like Moses, 00:02:03.95\00:02:05.62 we think about people like Paul who were 00:02:05.62\00:02:09.69 and could have been very successful in the secular world, 00:02:09.69\00:02:14.66 but they gave all that up to follow God. 00:02:14.66\00:02:19.13 What--why would they do that? 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.80 >>Well, they did actually a Ben Franklin list, Eric; 00:02:21.80\00:02:24.54 they decided what are the pros and what are the cons 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.44 for doing what the world offers and what does God offer. 00:02:26.44\00:02:29.74 And the simple answer is they did it 00:02:29.74\00:02:31.85 in hope of the reward because God promised them 00:02:31.85\00:02:34.32 something amazing and not only a blessed life here 00:02:34.32\00:02:37.35 and a more abundant life, but rewards 00:02:37.35\00:02:41.49 out of this world, literally. 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.12 >>So, huge rewards that God has offered 00:02:43.12\00:02:45.29 for those who are faithful to Him, 00:02:45.29\00:02:47.23 and Abraham, Moses, Paul, and many others saw that. 00:02:47.23\00:02:51.10 I wanna read a passage here from the book of Psalms 00:02:51.10\00:02:53.97 and have you comment on it, Ed. 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.80 This is Psalm 19, verses 7-11. 00:02:55.80\00:02:58.97 I'm gonna read through this fairly quickly. 00:02:58.97\00:03:00.64 It says, "The law of the Lord is perfect, 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.64 "converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, 00:03:02.64\00:03:06.08 "making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, 00:03:06.08\00:03:10.02 "rejoicing the heart; 00:03:10.02\00:03:11.35 "the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 00:03:11.35\00:03:15.16 "the fear of the Lord is clean, 00:03:15.16\00:03:16.99 "enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true 00:03:16.99\00:03:20.10 "and righteous altogether. 00:03:20.10\00:03:21.90 "More to be desired are they than gold, 00:03:21.90\00:03:25.37 "yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.77 than honey and the honeycomb." 00:03:28.77\00:03:30.87 And then it finishes with this statement: 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.27 "Moreover by them Your servant is warned, 00:03:33.27\00:03:36.28 and in keeping them there is great reward." 00:03:36.28\00:03:40.35 Those sound like encouraging words. 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.48 >>Yes indeed, and the amazing thing about it 00:03:42.48\00:03:44.32 is it's talked about a great reward. 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.99 To me, it's interesting that this is not legalistic; 00:03:46.99\00:03:50.29 it's just simply that God said if you take up 00:03:50.29\00:03:53.23 your side of the contract, you'll be blessed in this life, 00:03:53.23\00:03:56.03 and you'll have a future life to be blessed with as well. 00:03:56.03\00:03:59.40 It's interesting that in the Bible, 00:03:59.40\00:04:01.17 the word "reward" is used over 100 times. 00:04:01.17\00:04:03.77 And the last mention of it, "rewards," is in Revelation 22, 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.31 the last chapter of the Bible, verse 12, 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.48 where He says, "And, behold, I come quickly; 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.01 "and my reward is with me, to give every man 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.85 according as his work shall be." 00:04:13.85\00:04:16.35 In other words, there are some people who say, 00:04:16.35\00:04:18.75 "I don't care if I have a mansion in heaven or not. 00:04:18.75\00:04:20.89 "If I just live content, it's gonna be fine with me. 00:04:20.89\00:04:22.89 I just want to get there." But that's not the reward. 00:04:22.89\00:04:25.99 The Lord Himself promised us mansions, 00:04:25.99\00:04:28.13 and that's the interesting part. 00:04:28.13\00:04:29.76 So, no one's gonna just get there. 00:04:29.76\00:04:32.97 The bottom line is we get there as a result 00:04:32.97\00:04:35.30 of our faithfulness, and God's gonna reward us accordingly. 00:04:35.30\00:04:38.04 >>So Jesus has promised to bring a reward. 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.81 Certainly, mansions are involved in that, 00:04:40.81\00:04:43.08 living in the presence of God, 00:04:43.08\00:04:44.88 being able to thank Jesus personally, 00:04:44.88\00:04:47.12 eternal life, so many different rewards. 00:04:47.12\00:04:50.42 Sunday's lesson talks about rewards, again, 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.46 the reward for faithfulness. 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.96 How are rewards associated with faithfulness? 00:04:55.96\00:05:00.10 >>Well, this is interesting because Paul says 00:05:00.10\00:05:01.76 in 1 Corinthians, the fourth chapter, 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.13 it's "required in stewards that one be found faithful." 00:05:03.13\00:05:06.30 So we want to talk about what faithfulness means. 00:05:06.30\00:05:08.97 We all know that the faith chapter is Hebrews, chapter 11 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.24 and verse 6 states: "But without faith 00:05:12.24\00:05:15.24 it is impossible to please Him." 00:05:15.24\00:05:16.68 So that's the first constituent element to please God. 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.28 "For he that cometh to God must believe 00:05:19.28\00:05:20.95 "that He is, and that He is a rewarder 00:05:20.95\00:05:23.75 of them that diligently seek Him." 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.62 So if we diligently seek Him, He's gonna be a rewarder also. 00:05:25.62\00:05:28.49 So it's interesting. Moses is a good example of this. 00:05:28.49\00:05:31.56 We're gonna talk about two or three others 00:05:31.56\00:05:32.96 that are in there, these have to be Old Testament characters 00:05:32.96\00:05:34.93 'cause it was written in the New Testament, 00:05:34.93\00:05:36.26 so they didn't include themselves in it. 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.23 But I can just tell you something interesting, 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.00 that Moses is a good example. 00:05:40.00\00:05:41.74 Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 24-26 says, 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.94 "By faith Moses, when he was come to years, 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.98 "refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 00:05:47.98\00:05:50.38 "choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.35 of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season"-- 00:05:52.35\00:05:55.38 so he knew that the things on this earth 00:05:55.38\00:05:56.92 were only temporary-- 00:05:56.92\00:05:58.25 "esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.72 "than the treasures of Egypt: for he had respect 00:06:00.72\00:06:03.09 unto the recompense of the reward." 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.06 So he had his eyes on the reward. 00:06:05.06\00:06:07.13 So I'm gonna give you a little illustration now. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.53 We're doing this for the first quarter of 2023, 00:06:09.53\00:06:14.30 but 2022, where we are while recording, 00:06:14.30\00:06:17.11 is interesting because 100 years ago, one of 00:06:17.11\00:06:20.11 the greatest archeological finds of all time was discovered 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.45 by an English archaeologist named Howard Carter. 00:06:23.45\00:06:26.78 He discovered King Tut's tomb, and this is incredible 00:06:26.78\00:06:30.99 because more than 4,000 solid gold artifacts came 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.92 out of that tomb, including a solid gold sarcophagus, 00:06:33.92\00:06:38.03 solid gold mask. Many of you have seen pictures of it. 00:06:38.03\00:06:39.83 You can go on the internet easily--King Tut's tomb, 00:06:39.83\00:06:41.30 and it shows you right there what it was. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.26 We understand that because he was raised 00:06:43.26\00:06:45.10 by Pharaoh's daughter that Moses was in line for royalty, 00:06:45.10\00:06:50.17 but he chose rather to suffer with God's people there 00:06:51.47\00:06:53.68 because he knew about the rewards. 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.68 So what could Moses have had if he had stayed in Egypt? 00:06:55.68\00:06:59.55 Well, maybe royalty, a pleasant life 00:06:59.55\00:07:02.48 without much expenses and so on. 00:07:02.48\00:07:04.99 And the interesting thing is 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.12 that he would've been honored in his burial. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.12 He, for example, could have been buried 00:07:08.12\00:07:09.99 in a pyramid in a tomb with solid gold and all of that. 00:07:09.99\00:07:13.90 But right now, he would be a mummy in the Cairo Museum, 00:07:13.90\00:07:16.97 and that would be the end of Moses. 00:07:16.97\00:07:19.07 But the interesting part is he actually went 00:07:19.07\00:07:22.64 with God's people and put up with 00:07:22.64\00:07:24.94 all their murmuring and complaining 00:07:24.94\00:07:26.24 and stiff-necked actions and so on. 00:07:26.24\00:07:28.88 But God rewarded him by resurrecting him 00:07:28.88\00:07:32.08 from the dead and taking him to heaven. 00:07:32.08\00:07:33.72 We know He did that because it's mentioned 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.28 that in the book of Jude in the New Testament. 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.12 But beyond that, he was there 00:07:37.12\00:07:38.09 at the Transfiguration with Elijah. 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.52 Incredible as it may seem, eternity is in his hands now. 00:07:40.52\00:07:44.26 God honored him with that, so he--it was a good decision, 00:07:44.26\00:07:48.76 in my opinion; he was much rewarded for that decision. 00:07:48.76\00:07:52.20 >>You take a look at what he could have had, 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.14 and most people would be pretty satisfied 00:07:54.14\00:07:57.21 to have the riches and the wealth of Egypt. 00:07:57.21\00:08:00.34 But Moses said, "No, that's a pittance compared 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.75 to what is actually waiting for me." 00:08:03.75\00:08:06.88 And he set his sights much higher than anything 00:08:06.88\00:08:10.35 that even Egypt had in store for him. 00:08:10.35\00:08:14.02 I'd like to read some passages here 00:08:14.02\00:08:15.92 from a book called "The Great Controversy." 00:08:15.92\00:08:17.99 These are found on pages 674 and 675. 00:08:17.99\00:08:21.43 It says, "A fear of making the future inheritance seem 00:08:21.43\00:08:23.97 "too material has led many to spiritualize away 00:08:23.97\00:08:26.97 "the very truths which lead us to look upon it as our home. 00:08:26.97\00:08:31.47 "Christ assured His disciples that He went 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.64 "to prepare mansions for them in the Father's house. 00:08:33.64\00:08:36.34 "Those who accept the teachings of God's word 00:08:36.34\00:08:38.61 "will not be wholly ignorant concerning the heavenly abode. 00:08:38.61\00:08:41.75 "And yet, 'eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, 00:08:41.75\00:08:44.09 "'neither have entered into the heart of man, 00:08:44.09\00:08:45.85 "the things which God hath prepared for them that love 00:08:45.85\00:08:49.19 Him.' "Human language is inadequate to describe 00:08:49.19\00:08:51.63 "the reward of the righteous. 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.36 "It will be known only to those who behold it. 00:08:53.36\00:08:56.16 "No finite mind can comprehend the glory 00:08:56.16\00:08:59.30 "of the Paradise of God. In the Bible, the inheritance 00:08:59.30\00:09:02.50 of the saved is called 'a country'"-- 00:09:02.50\00:09:04.44 in Hebrews 11:14-16. "There the heavenly Shepherd 00:09:04.44\00:09:07.74 "leads His flock to fountains of living waters. 00:09:07.74\00:09:10.58 "The tree of life yields its fruit every month, 00:09:10.58\00:09:12.75 "and the leaves of the tree are 00:09:12.75\00:09:13.78 "for the service of the nations. 00:09:13.78\00:09:15.52 "There are ever-flowing streams, clear as crystal, 00:09:15.52\00:09:18.42 "and beside them waving trees cast 00:09:18.42\00:09:20.39 "their shadows upon the paths prepared 00:09:20.39\00:09:22.29 "for the ransomed of the Lord. 00:09:22.29\00:09:23.99 "There the wide-spreading plains swell 00:09:23.99\00:09:26.03 "into hills of beauty, and the mountains 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.06 "of God rear their lofty summits. 00:09:28.06\00:09:30.40 "[Of] those peaceful plains, beside those living streams, 00:09:30.40\00:09:33.70 "God's people, so long pilgrims and wanderers, 00:09:33.70\00:09:36.57 shall find a home." 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.61 In Hebrews 11, the famous faith chapter, Paul states, 00:09:38.61\00:09:42.18 "Without faith it is impossible to please Him, 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.15 "for he who comes to God must believe that He is, 00:09:45.15\00:09:48.12 and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." 00:09:48.12\00:09:51.82 After discussing the faith of Abel, Enoch, 00:09:51.82\00:09:54.69 Noah, and Abraham and Sarah, Paul notes, 00:09:54.69\00:09:57.53 "These all died in faith, not having received the promises, 00:09:57.53\00:10:02.30 "but having seen them afar off were assured of them, 00:10:02.30\00:10:06.20 "embraced them and confessed that they were strangers 00:10:06.20\00:10:10.07 and pilgrims on the earth." 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.91 So they didn't get to see the realization, 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.51 but in faith they looked forward 00:10:15.51\00:10:16.98 to the reward that God had for them. 00:10:16.98\00:10:18.85 >>Their whole earthly life, Eric, was faithfulness, 00:10:18.85\00:10:21.45 even though they didn't receive the reward, 00:10:21.45\00:10:23.45 but they will get the reward, and we're gonna see 00:10:23.45\00:10:24.79 what that is in their life in just a few minutes. 00:10:24.79\00:10:27.42 It's interesting that in Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount, 00:10:27.42\00:10:30.29 He begins it with the Beatitudes, 00:10:30.29\00:10:32.33 and one of the Beatitudes stated, 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.03 "Blessed are you when they [shall] revile 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.46 "and persecute you and say all kinds of evil 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.07 "against you falsely for my sake. 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.60 "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.97 "is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted 00:10:41.97\00:10:45.07 the prophets which were before you." 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.84 There's a reward for the righteous, 00:10:48.04\00:10:49.28 and we can ask, what are they? 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.28 Well, John 3:16 gives one of them, 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.72 there's only two choices in life, 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.32 and that is seeking eternal life or planning on perishing. 00:10:55.32\00:10:59.45 John 3:16 says if we believe in the Lord Jesus, 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.02 we're gonna have eternal life saved up for us. 00:11:02.02\00:11:05.13 Romans 6:23 says something similar: 00:11:05.13\00:11:07.20 "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God 00:11:07.20\00:11:09.56 is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." 00:11:09.56\00:11:11.67 So having the hope of eternal life is an awesome thing 00:11:11.67\00:11:15.24 that we can live with all through our earthly life as 00:11:15.24\00:11:18.77 well. >>So for the righteous, it looks, 00:11:18.77\00:11:20.64 the reward looks like eternal life. 00:11:20.64\00:11:22.41 For the wicked, well, unfortunately, 00:11:22.41\00:11:24.88 it's not something that desirable, 00:11:24.88\00:11:27.25 but ultimately, God does give us the option. 00:11:27.25\00:11:29.82 He gives us the privilege to be able to choose 00:11:29.82\00:11:33.22 whether we want eternal life or, ultimately, destruction. 00:11:33.22\00:11:37.29 You know, the most famous verse in the Bible, 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.29 John 3:16, says that we will either have eternal life 00:11:39.29\00:11:42.93 or we will perish, and perish certainly 00:11:42.93\00:11:46.23 doesn't sound like much of a, well, much of 00:11:46.23\00:11:48.67 a reward that we would want in comparison with eternal life. 00:11:48.67\00:11:53.07 But God in His mercy and His love makes 00:11:53.07\00:11:54.91 those two options available to each one of us. 00:11:54.91\00:11:57.48 We've been looking this quarter at what success looks like, 00:11:57.48\00:12:01.38 at financial success, at preparing for the future, 00:12:01.38\00:12:05.42 at providing for the means to spread 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.16 the gospel around the world. 00:12:09.16\00:12:10.86 And God gives us, entrusts to us the means that we have, 00:12:10.86\00:12:15.63 the finances that we have so that we can learn, 00:12:15.63\00:12:18.23 we can grow, we can build our characters, 00:12:18.23\00:12:21.37 we can be successful in many different ways in this life, 00:12:21.37\00:12:24.54 and we can be a blessing to others 00:12:24.54\00:12:26.74 so that they can get to know Jesus as well. 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.44 I trust that you have enjoyed this quarter's lessons. 00:12:29.44\00:12:32.11 We're not done with this lesson yet, 00:12:32.11\00:12:33.88 but I wanna give you one final opportunity, 00:12:33.88\00:12:36.35 if for some reason you have put off doing something 00:12:36.35\00:12:39.22 that you know you should have done a long time ago. 00:12:39.22\00:12:42.62 Here's one more opportunity to pick up 00:12:42.62\00:12:44.46 the companion book to this quarter's Sabbath school lesson. 00:12:44.46\00:12:47.30 It is entitled "Managing for the Master" 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.93 by, of course, G. What do you think? 00:15:58.99\00:16:01.49 >>Plus He's coming back, and it was His idea 00:16:01.49\00:16:03.83 that He talked to us about mansions. 00:16:03.83\00:16:05.23 That's not some pie-in-the-sky idea that we've come up with. 00:16:05.23\00:16:08.00 You know, skeptics say that "religion 00:16:08.00\00:16:09.96 is the opiate of the people," that they think 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.50 there's a pie-in-the-sky by-and-by, and so on. 00:16:11.50\00:16:14.00 These are words of Jesus I wanted to include 00:16:14.00\00:16:15.90 in here because He says, "I'm coming back for you. 00:16:15.90\00:16:18.07 There's a mansion for you in the kingdom." This is His idea. 00:16:18.07\00:16:21.04 >>So this idea of a mansion for us, 00:16:21.04\00:16:23.51 that He's preparing for us in the kingdom, 00:16:23.51\00:16:25.65 that leads us to Tuesday's lesson, "The New Jerusalem." 00:16:25.65\00:16:28.72 New Jerusalem is a picture of a city 00:16:28.72\00:16:31.19 that is far beyond any of our wildest imaginations. 00:16:31.19\00:16:35.32 I've been to some pretty incredible homes 00:16:35.32\00:16:38.39 around the world, castles and so forth. 00:16:38.39\00:16:41.53 You think of Versailles; you think of Neuschwanstein 00:16:41.53\00:16:44.33 and other places like that--I have a feeling 00:16:44.33\00:16:47.67 that this is going to leave them all behind. 00:16:47.67\00:16:50.71 What was it that motivated Abraham and Sarah 00:16:50.71\00:16:53.58 to leave an established home, a place that they had 00:16:53.58\00:16:57.71 and live the rest of their lives, essentially, in a tent? 00:16:57.71\00:17:02.32 You know, Jesus promises something fantastic. 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.72 They didn't see that, really, in their lives. 00:17:04.72\00:17:07.59 >>The interesting thing about that is 00:17:07.59\00:17:09.06 there is some motivation for it. 00:17:09.06\00:17:11.16 And, believe it or not, I'm gonna give Sarah credit too 00:17:11.16\00:17:13.26 because she was willing to go along with it, 00:17:13.26\00:17:14.60 and her name is mentioned in the faith chapter as well. 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.77 So this is amazing; this couple were willing 00:17:16.77\00:17:19.40 to leave their established home, 00:17:19.40\00:17:21.14 their friends, and their roots, and so on 00:17:21.14\00:17:23.17 and travel to a foreign country and to, essentially, 00:17:23.17\00:17:26.57 live in a tent the rest of their life. 00:17:26.57\00:17:28.48 There were some amazing things that happened 00:17:28.48\00:17:30.91 as a result of that, Abraham's encounters 00:17:30.91\00:17:33.35 with God and so on, but what made him faithful was recorded 00:17:33.35\00:17:37.72 in Hebrews 11, verse 10, why he was willing to do that: 00:17:37.72\00:17:40.66 "For he looked for a city which [has] foundations, 00:17:40.66\00:17:42.72 whose builder and maker is God." 00:17:42.72\00:17:44.83 The only city mentioned in the Bible 00:17:44.83\00:17:46.36 that talks about its foundations is the New Jerusalem 00:17:46.36\00:17:48.76 that's described in Revelation 21. 00:17:48.76\00:17:52.10 So I'm gonna tell you something interesting; 00:17:52.10\00:17:54.40 eternal life that we talked about in John 3:16 00:17:54.40\00:17:56.91 and John 14:1-3 is not more of the same 00:17:56.91\00:17:59.71 we've had on this earth; it is eternal life based on 00:17:59.71\00:18:02.94 the fourth verse of Revelation 21, 00:18:02.94\00:18:04.78 with no more sorrow, no more tears, no more pain, 00:18:04.78\00:18:08.72 no more suffering, no more death. 00:18:08.72\00:18:10.95 Would you like to live in a place like that? 00:18:10.95\00:18:12.89 This is incredible, and then the city is described. 00:18:12.89\00:18:16.02 It's incredible; the beautiful city, it's amazing. 00:18:16.02\00:18:19.23 It talks about 12 foundations all covered 00:18:19.23\00:18:21.53 with precious stones of different kinds and so on, 00:18:21.53\00:18:24.77 walls of jasper. I mean, if you can only imagine this: 00:18:24.77\00:18:28.74 12 gates, and each gate was one pearl-- 00:18:28.74\00:18:31.51 huge, I mean big enough for a semi 00:18:31.51\00:18:34.01 to drive through, a big pearl. This isn't crazy. 00:18:34.01\00:18:36.68 Not that we're bringing semis with us, you understand, 00:18:36.68\00:18:38.68 but something big for huge crowds of people. 00:18:38.68\00:18:40.98 Also, the city itself is pure gold, 00:18:40.98\00:18:43.72 and the streets are paved with gold. 00:18:43.72\00:18:45.85 If you can imagine the light is the light of Jesus 00:18:45.85\00:18:48.96 and the Father, and it shines through the whole city. 00:18:48.96\00:18:51.49 It's just incredible. 00:18:51.49\00:18:53.33 The tree of life is there--do I need to say more? 00:18:53.33\00:18:57.00 The tree of life is there, the water of life, 00:18:57.00\00:18:59.90 the pure crystal water. 00:18:59.90\00:19:01.74 Today, we know mostly about polluted waters here, 00:19:01.74\00:19:05.47 and we have to strain our water. 00:19:05.47\00:19:06.74 And we know there's even some cities 00:19:06.74\00:19:07.88 that have awful water here in America today. 00:19:07.88\00:19:10.45 But the interesting thing is God's throne 00:19:10.45\00:19:12.41 is there, and He's the light. 00:19:12.41\00:19:13.88 To me, this is incredible, that's what motivated him 00:19:15.28\00:19:17.42 to go forward and them to live there, 00:19:17.42\00:19:19.45 even though they didn't receive it, 00:19:19.45\00:19:21.12 even though they were told that their seed 00:19:21.12\00:19:23.86 will be like the stars of heaven and the sand of the sea. 00:19:23.86\00:19:26.16 Of course that's true today, but it wasn't for him then. 00:19:26.16\00:19:29.26 But he was by faith; he was always faithful. 00:19:29.26\00:19:31.20 He's called "the father of the faithful" 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.97 because he had his eyes on the prize. 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.20 He had his eyes on the reward that God offered him. 00:19:35.20\00:19:37.84 >>Ed, we look at those rewards, 00:19:37.84\00:19:39.21 and if we are thinking people, 00:19:39.21\00:19:42.21 we want those; we want to inherit those; 00:19:42.21\00:19:44.38 we want to move into that city, to make our abode there, 00:19:44.38\00:19:48.22 and to be surrounded by these incredible things. 00:19:48.22\00:19:50.75 They sound a whole lot better than what we have here 00:19:50.75\00:19:53.19 on this earth regardless of where we might live. 00:19:53.19\00:19:55.72 On Wednesday's lesson, it talks about 00:19:56.73\00:19:58.39 the settling of accounts; we wanna make it 00:19:58.39\00:20:01.53 to the reward that God has for us. 00:20:01.53\00:20:03.60 But there's some accounts that need to be settled first. 00:20:03.60\00:20:06.47 And Jesus tells us a story, a parable 00:20:06.47\00:20:09.17 of the talents in Matthew 25, verses 14 through 19, 00:20:09.17\00:20:12.84 about somebody who's traveling into a far country. 00:20:12.84\00:20:15.68 What is the purpose of this parable? What does it all mean? 00:20:17.01\00:20:19.41 What can we learn from it? 00:20:19.41\00:20:21.05 And what does it really mean to settle accounts? 00:20:21.05\00:20:23.72 >>This is a good question because Jesus' disciples came 00:20:23.72\00:20:26.99 to Him privately in Matthew 24, verse 3 and said, 00:20:26.99\00:20:29.66 "Tell us, when will these things be? 00:20:29.66\00:20:30.96 And what will be the sign of Your coming?" 00:20:30.96\00:20:32.69 So Jesus gave a private discourse to His faithful 00:20:32.69\00:20:36.20 disciples, whom He loved dearly and was going to leave soon. 00:20:36.20\00:20:38.37 And an incredible thing, He says, 00:20:38.37\00:20:40.20 here's what you're gonna expect to see in the world-- 00:20:40.20\00:20:41.94 and this is Matthew 24--you're gonna see wars 00:20:41.94\00:20:43.87 and rumors of wars, pestilence, 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.14 famines, all kinds of things like that. 00:20:45.14\00:20:47.81 And the gospel's going to all the world, 00:20:47.81\00:20:49.24 and then Jesus will come. 00:20:49.24\00:20:50.71 But then, Matthew 25 where He tells the stories 00:20:50.71\00:20:53.68 of the 10 virgins, and the talents, 00:20:53.68\00:20:55.55 and the sheep and the goats, that's talking 00:20:55.55\00:20:57.95 about what's it like in the church just before He comes. 00:20:57.95\00:21:01.36 Because--remember the 10 virgins? 00:21:01.36\00:21:02.99 There were five foolish and five wise. 00:21:02.99\00:21:07.03 All of them professed the truth. 00:21:07.03\00:21:09.00 All of them were waiting for the bridegroom. 00:21:09.00\00:21:10.70 But the foolish ones didn't have 00:21:10.70\00:21:12.37 the Holy Spirit to transform their lives. 00:21:12.37\00:21:14.60 So they're all part of His servants. 00:21:14.60\00:21:17.01 And since you asked the question about the talents, 00:21:17.01\00:21:19.41 this is incredible, because this master 00:21:19.41\00:21:22.21 who's going to a far country called 00:21:22.21\00:21:23.85 his own servants and gave it to 'em. 00:21:23.85\00:21:25.41 He's not talked about the money that the wicked people have. 00:21:25.41\00:21:28.68 It's the money that God's people have had. 00:21:28.68\00:21:30.49 And this is incredible when you think about it 00:21:30.49\00:21:32.32 because he gave one a five, and one two, and one one. 00:21:32.32\00:21:36.19 And the ones that had the most doubled 00:21:36.19\00:21:39.23 their amounts and were blessed 00:21:39.23\00:21:40.93 and were given responsibilities in heaven and so on. 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.80 But believe it or not, the guy with the one talent was 00:21:43.80\00:21:46.17 the one unfaithful one. 00:21:46.17\00:21:47.97 So everybody's got at least one talent. 00:21:47.97\00:21:50.44 Let me just tell you something interesting. 00:21:50.44\00:21:52.71 If you work your whole life in your earning years 00:21:52.71\00:21:55.08 and you just make minimum wage, 00:21:55.08\00:21:56.88 you're gonna make more than a million dollars. 00:21:56.88\00:21:59.11 Should you give an account of that? 00:21:59.11\00:22:00.75 Of course. The amazing thing is 00:22:00.75\00:22:03.49 he was unfaithful, so he was cast out. 00:22:03.49\00:22:05.99 That's pretty sad when you think about it. 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.59 But I want to tell you that God's told us 00:22:08.59\00:22:11.06 that the parable of the talents, 00:22:11.06\00:22:13.73 and it's recorded in volume--"Testimonies to the 00:22:13.73\00:22:17.03 Church," volume 1, page 97: "I was shown...the parable 00:22:17.03\00:22:20.04 "of the talents [is] not...fully understood. 00:22:20.04\00:22:21.80 "This important lesson was given to the disciples"-- 00:22:21.80\00:22:24.94 remember this private meeting with Jesus-- 00:22:24.94\00:22:26.71 "for the benefit of Christians living in the last days. 00:22:26.71\00:22:29.68 "And these talents do not represent merely 00:22:29.68\00:22:31.78 "the ability to preach and to instruct [in] the word of God. 00:22:31.78\00:22:34.48 "The parable applies to the temporal means 00:22:34.48\00:22:36.89 which God has entrusted to His people." 00:22:36.89\00:22:38.92 So when he comes back to settle accounts, 00:22:38.92\00:22:41.96 it's kind of like, "Well, tell me what you've done 00:22:41.96\00:22:45.33 with what I've entrusted to you." 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.03 So it's kind of a judgment day, if you please. 00:22:47.03\00:22:49.90 >>So God is going to hold us accountable 00:22:49.90\00:22:51.73 for the things that He has given to us, 00:22:51.73\00:22:53.67 including temporal means, as you just mentioned. 00:22:53.67\00:22:56.84 >>Yes. >>Worth considering 00:22:56.84\00:22:59.84 when we decide where we want to spend that money. 00:22:59.84\00:23:02.64 Thursday's lesson, "Eyes on the Prize," 00:23:02.64\00:23:05.55 Thursday talks about Paul, 00:23:05.55\00:23:07.32 and Paul went through the wringer. 00:23:07.32\00:23:10.19 He went through beating, stoning, prison, 00:23:10.19\00:23:12.72 shipwreck, hunger, cold, he went through the gamut, 00:23:12.72\00:23:17.33 and yet he was able to endure it all. 00:23:17.33\00:23:19.73 What was it that helped Paul get through 00:23:19.73\00:23:22.90 everything he went through? 00:23:22.90\00:23:24.77 >>This is really interesting because many times 00:23:24.77\00:23:26.67 he talked about the reward, and, to me, it's incredible 00:23:26.67\00:23:29.90 that he was willing to endure all he did. 00:23:29.90\00:23:32.21 Sometimes I think that I've been so blessed 00:23:32.21\00:23:34.18 that I haven't ever been stoned and left for dead. 00:23:34.18\00:23:36.41 I have never been beaten with rods. 00:23:36.41\00:23:38.01 I've never been thrown in prison. 00:23:38.01\00:23:39.81 And I've tried to be faithful and honor God 00:23:39.81\00:23:42.05 in all of my life and in my works 00:23:42.05\00:23:44.22 and my writings and my speaking and so on. 00:23:44.22\00:23:46.69 But the bottom line is, would I be faithful, 00:23:46.69\00:23:49.06 even if that wasn't the case, 00:23:49.06\00:23:51.23 if I did have a life of difficulty? 00:23:51.23\00:23:53.09 That's the kind of thing that we're talking about. 00:23:53.09\00:23:55.46 But in Romans he says, "The Spirit...beareth witness 00:23:55.46\00:23:57.57 [to] our spirit that we're the children of God." 00:23:57.57\00:23:59.47 He recognized that. "And if children, then heirs of God; 00:23:59.47\00:24:02.80 "...joint-heirs with Christ; 00:24:02.80\00:24:03.91 "...so be [if] we suffer with Him, 00:24:03.91\00:24:05.17 ...we [shall all] be...glorified together." 00:24:05.17\00:24:07.38 Then he says this one in verse 18: 00:24:07.38\00:24:09.28 "I reckon that the sufferings of this present time 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.31 "are not worthy to be compared with the glory 00:24:11.31\00:24:13.15 which [God has] revealed [to] us." 00:24:13.15\00:24:15.42 This is incredible. And we're gonna look 00:24:15.42\00:24:18.92 at a couple verses here beyond that as well. 00:24:18.92\00:24:21.79 >>So Paul had his eyes set on the prize, 00:24:21.79\00:24:24.26 the ultimate goal that he was striving toward by the grace 00:24:24.26\00:24:28.43 of God, and he didn't let that out of his sight. 00:24:28.43\00:24:31.20 You mentioned some of the things he's gone through. 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.77 Share a little bit more about Paul 00:24:34.77\00:24:35.97 in the time that we have left. 00:24:35.97\00:24:37.77 >>Well, it's interesting to see 00:24:37.77\00:24:38.77 that he wrote in Philippians; by the way, 00:24:38.77\00:24:42.21 that's one of the prison epistles, so it's incredible. 00:24:42.21\00:24:44.88 He's in prison, knows he's gonna die. 00:24:44.88\00:24:47.62 And he wrote this to people: 00:24:47.62\00:24:49.32 "I don't count myself to have apprehended; 00:24:49.32\00:24:51.45 "but one thing I do, [I forget] those things 00:24:51.45\00:24:53.52 "which are behind and [I reach] forward 00:24:53.52\00:24:54.89 "to those things which are ahead, 00:24:54.89\00:24:56.39 "[and] I press toward the goal [of] the prize 00:24:56.39\00:24:58.13 of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." 00:24:58.13\00:25:00.16 So it's very interesting that early on in his ministry-- 00:25:00.16\00:25:04.70 I like the fact that Paul said 00:25:04.70\00:25:07.14 when Jesus returns, "The dead in Christ will rise first, 00:25:07.14\00:25:09.34 "and then we [that] are alive and remain"-- 00:25:09.34\00:25:10.91 like he thought he was gonna be part of that group-- 00:25:10.91\00:25:12.27 "will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air." 00:25:12.27\00:25:14.54 Well, finally, near the end of his ministry, 00:25:14.54\00:25:16.58 he realized that wasn't gonna be the case. 00:25:16.58\00:25:18.45 So he wrote to Timothy these words in 2 Timothy, 00:25:18.45\00:25:21.42 fourth chapter. Would you kindly read those to us? 00:25:21.42\00:25:24.32 >>In 2 Timothy, chapter 4, verses 6-8, 00:25:24.32\00:25:26.62 this passage is often referred to as Paul's valedictory, 00:25:26.62\00:25:29.56 and we're gonna tie this quarter's lessons 00:25:29.56\00:25:31.83 together with these words. 00:25:31.83\00:25:33.33 Paul writes, "For I am now ready to be offered, 00:25:33.33\00:25:36.26 "and the time of my departure is at hand. 00:25:36.26\00:25:39.30 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, 00:25:39.30\00:25:43.10 "I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up 00:25:43.10\00:25:46.41 "for me a crown of righteousness, 00:25:46.41\00:25:48.28 "which the Lord, the righteous judge, 00:25:48.28\00:25:50.71 "shall give me at that day: and not to me only, 00:25:50.71\00:25:54.65 but unto all them also that love His appearing." 00:25:54.65\00:25:59.72 Ed, we've been through 12 weeks 00:26:00.59\00:26:01.39 of "Managing for the Master." 00:26:01.39\00:26:03.29 We're down to the last couple of minutes. 00:26:03.29\00:26:06.29 Tie things together for us. 00:26:06.29\00:26:08.30 What are the nuggets that you hope 00:26:08.30\00:26:10.70 that we've been able to gain from these 12 weeks, 00:26:10.70\00:26:13.70 this journey that we have spent together? 00:26:13.70\00:26:16.27 >>Thank you, I can actually do that in one verse. 00:26:16.27\00:26:19.37 And that verse is Matthew 13:44, in the words of Jesus: 00:26:19.37\00:26:23.68 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden 00:26:23.68\00:26:26.48 "in a field, which a man found and hid; 00:26:26.48\00:26:30.05 "and for joy over it... 00:26:30.05\00:26:31.85 sells all that he has [to buy the] field." 00:26:31.85\00:26:35.29 My question to all of us: Have we found the treasure? 00:26:35.29\00:26:37.93 Have we found something worth giving up 00:26:37.93\00:26:39.96 to get to the kingdom? 00:26:39.96\00:26:41.26 "Things of this earth will go strangely dim in the light 00:26:41.26\00:26:43.50 of His glory and grace," as we learned in the song. 00:26:43.50\00:26:45.87 So what I would say to people is put God first. 00:26:45.87\00:26:49.00 Recognize that He is the treasure. 00:26:49.00\00:26:50.77 He's the one that has the opportunity 00:26:50.77\00:26:52.21 to provide the treasure for us. 00:26:52.21\00:26:54.14 And if we're faithful to Him, when He comes back, 00:26:54.14\00:26:56.21 He will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant. 00:26:56.21\00:26:58.18 Enter into the joy of your Lord." 00:26:58.18\00:26:59.81 >>Ed, we wanna thank you for spending 00:26:59.81\00:27:01.95 these 12 weeks with us, guiding us 00:27:01.95\00:27:04.42 through this incredible subject. 00:27:04.42\00:27:06.02 It has been a wonderful journey, and I have no doubt 00:27:06.02\00:27:08.96 that many people's lives are going to be changed, 00:27:08.96\00:27:10.89 not just in this earth but for eternity 00:27:10.89\00:27:13.26 as a result of what we've been studied. 00:27:13.26\00:27:15.20 And I'd like to thank you for joining us 00:27:15.20\00:27:17.37 for the last 12 weeks, and if, for some reason, 00:27:17.37\00:27:19.70 you haven't been able to join us for these 12 weeks, 00:27:19.70\00:27:22.50 you can go back and watch the archived versions, 00:27:22.50\00:27:25.01 or episodes, of this quarter's lesson 00:27:25.01\00:27:27.21 so that you can receive the blessing of it as well. 00:27:27.21\00:27:30.65 Once again, if you haven't already picked it up, 00:27:30.65\00:27:32.05 make sure that you pick up "Managing for the Master." 00:27:32.05\00:27:34.72 This is a phenomenal read, and you will enjoy it immensely. 00:27:34.72\00:27:38.95 We're excited to have had you on this journey. 00:27:38.95\00:27:40.72 We trust that there are some things 00:27:40.72\00:27:42.06 that you can now put into practice in your life 00:27:42.06\00:27:45.03 that will bless you in this world 00:27:45.03\00:27:46.86 and bless you in the world to come. 00:27:46.86\00:27:49.40 Next week we're going to be back with a brand new quarter, 00:27:49.40\00:27:52.43 a brand new subject, and you won't want to miss an episode. 00:27:52.43\00:27:56.74 Thank you once again for joining us here 00:27:56.74\00:27:59.14 on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:59.14\00:28:03.55 (uplifting theme music) 00:28:03.55\00:28:06.21 (music ends) 00:28:26.87\00:28:28.97
