(inspirational theme music) 00:00:00.80\00:00:02.66 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:14.88\00:00:16.48 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:16.48\00:00:18.51 We are delighted to have you back with us once again. 00:00:18.51\00:00:21.65 This is week number 13, so we are very nearly 00:00:21.65\00:00:25.32 at the end of this particular subject. 00:00:25.32\00:00:28.09 We're looking at "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:00:28.09\00:00:31.16 and we're finding that, above all, 00:00:31.16\00:00:32.76 this is an encouraging and hopeful subject 00:00:32.76\00:00:35.53 rather than one that we could be discouraged 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.77 or worried or fearful about, 00:00:37.77\00:00:40.10 and this week we're going to be looking at, 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.50 in the greater scheme of things, 00:00:42.50\00:00:44.24 a smaller segment about the judgment. 00:00:44.24\00:00:47.51 So, what about "The Judging Process"? 00:00:47.51\00:00:49.88 Why is there a judgment? 00:00:49.88\00:00:52.15 Well, to help us understand the answer to that question, 00:00:52.15\00:00:55.35 we have the author of the Sabbath school study guide. 00:00:55.35\00:00:58.65 He is Dr. Alberto Timm. He is also an associate director 00:00:58.65\00:01:02.52 of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.03 Alberto, welcome back once again. 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.03 >>It's an honor for me to be with you. 00:01:06.03\00:01:08.70 >>So let's look at this judgment. 00:01:08.70\00:01:10.47 Let me begin by asking this question. 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.60 If God knows everything, 00:01:13.60\00:01:17.44 if He knows the end from the beginning, 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.34 everything from Genesis to Revelation 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.51 and in between and beyond, and we're saved by grace, 00:01:21.51\00:01:26.31 what's the point of the judgment? 00:01:27.18\00:01:29.55 Why does there need to be a judgment 00:01:29.55\00:01:32.69 if these things are true? 00:01:32.69\00:01:35.12 >>Many years ago, Morris Venden started 00:01:35.12\00:01:39.43 an article with a question: 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.53 "How would you feel if, coming to heaven, 00:01:42.53\00:01:45.97 "Billy Graham would not be there, 00:01:45.97\00:01:48.94 and Adolf Hitler would be your neighbor?" 00:01:48.94\00:01:52.14 And then he goes on. 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.08 He's not suggesting that Adolf Hitler would be there, 00:01:55.08\00:01:59.25 but he said, "Well, probably, you would be wondering, 00:01:59.25\00:02:02.68 "'I am at the right place? 00:02:02.68\00:02:05.02 And how does it come that Adolf Hitler is here?'" 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.26 So heaven will be a place of surprises. 00:02:10.26\00:02:15.30 Many people that we would believe that would be there 00:02:16.67\00:02:19.10 will not be, 00:02:19.10\00:02:20.84 and people that we would say that would never be there 00:02:20.84\00:02:24.91 will be there. 00:02:24.91\00:02:26.27 So God submits Himself--or, in other words, 00:02:26.27\00:02:29.68 He accommodates Himself 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.58 to our human condition as creatures 00:02:31.58\00:02:36.65 to explain that what we cannot understand by ourselves. 00:02:37.95\00:02:41.79 He knows everything, He does not need the judgment, 00:02:41.79\00:02:44.96 but He actually submits Himself in this way. 00:02:44.96\00:02:48.70 And going back to the point of salvation by grace, 00:02:48.70\00:02:52.17 I think that, to keep the balance in regard 00:02:52.17\00:02:57.17 to salvation, we need to have three concepts in mind. 00:02:57.17\00:03:02.14 The first one: 00:03:02.68\00:03:03.88 Sinners are saved by grace alone. 00:03:04.98\00:03:09.65 They are justified by faith, 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.46 and they are judged by works. 00:03:13.46\00:03:16.86 There was a time in human history, 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.73 especially in the Middle Ages and so on, 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.66 that people really emphasized, 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.93 preachers emphasized very much the concept of judgment, 00:03:23.93\00:03:29.00 and today people are more into grace without judgment. 00:03:30.37\00:03:33.71 I think that we should have that kind of balance 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.24 with these three concepts: 00:03:36.24\00:03:40.05 saved by grace, justified by faith, and judged by works. 00:03:40.05\00:03:45.12 >>So that helps us understand it, at least a little bit, 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.92 but I'm gonna throw a curve ball. 00:03:48.92\00:03:51.53 I'm going to attempt to throw a curve ball here 00:03:51.53\00:03:54.00 and share a text that seems to indicate 00:03:54.00\00:03:57.57 that certain people don't need to worry about the judgment, 00:03:57.57\00:04:01.54 and that text is John 5, verse number 24, 00:04:01.54\00:04:04.54 and I happen to have a red-letter Bible, 00:04:04.54\00:04:06.44 and this passage happens to be in red, 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.41 so that means that Jesus is speaking, 00:04:08.41\00:04:11.18 so we can trust what He has to say. 00:04:11.18\00:04:13.18 In John 5, verse 24, Jesus says, 00:04:13.18\00:04:15.25 "Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:04:15.25\00:04:17.79 "he who hears my word and believes in Him 00:04:17.79\00:04:21.72 "who sent me has everlasting life, 00:04:21.72\00:04:25.19 "and shall not come into judgment, 00:04:25.19\00:04:28.23 but has passed from death into life." 00:04:28.23\00:04:33.07 Now, again, just taking that text, 00:04:33.07\00:04:35.54 that scripture on its own, it does sound problematic, 00:04:35.54\00:04:39.64 but we've got more than just that verse in the Bible. 00:04:39.64\00:04:43.01 So help us to understand it. 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.68 >>Actually, some people believe that 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.22 those who are in Christ will never face judgment, 00:04:48.22\00:04:53.29 but this is a misunderstanding, I think, 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.42 of the whole context of the Bible, 00:04:56.42\00:04:59.63 the teachings of the Bible on this matter. 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.00 Actually, William Shea, in one of his books, 00:05:03.00\00:05:06.90 pointed out that, in the Old Testament, 00:05:06.90\00:05:09.67 you have more than 20 judgments of God's people. 00:05:09.67\00:05:14.24 You have the judgment of an individual, you have of a group, 00:05:14.24\00:05:17.91 and the whole nation then later on. 00:05:17.91\00:05:20.82 So, there are judgements. 00:05:20.82\00:05:23.08 You have other passages in the New Testament. For instance, 00:05:23.08\00:05:27.26 you have 2 Corinthians 5, verse 10, 00:05:27.26\00:05:32.33 where Paul says that all of us will be judged, 00:05:33.43\00:05:37.40 and when it comes to the parable of the final judgment, 00:05:37.40\00:05:41.57 for instance, in Matthew 25, 00:05:41.57\00:05:45.37 verses 31-46, you will see 00:05:45.37\00:05:49.58 that there are not only the goats, or the wicked, 00:05:49.58\00:05:54.15 but also the sheep, standing for the righteous, 00:05:54.15\00:05:58.45 and Paul also speaks about the judgment, 00:05:58.45\00:06:02.42 as we already mentioned, and when it comes, for instance, 00:06:02.42\00:06:06.59 to the book of Revelation, chapter 11, verse 1, 00:06:06.59\00:06:11.50 there is that apocalyptic expression 00:06:11.50\00:06:15.64 "to measure the sanctuary," or the temple, the altar, 00:06:15.64\00:06:20.34 and those who worship in the sanctuary. 00:06:20.34\00:06:24.21 What does it mean, really, those who worship? 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.22 That's the judgment of God's people. 00:06:27.22\00:06:29.48 So we cannot excuse ourselves, 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.32 saying that God's people are not judged. 00:06:32.32\00:06:35.32 In the Greek original for this word, 00:06:35.32\00:06:38.56 here in the Gospel of John, 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.60 the meaning is not only "judgment." 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.73 Actually, it means the condemnation in the judgment. 00:06:44.73\00:06:48.60 So some of the Bible translations 00:06:48.60\00:06:51.01 are very careful of pointing out this matter that, 00:06:51.01\00:06:56.08 in reality, God's people are not condemned at the judgment, 00:06:57.45\00:07:01.25 but, in other words, they will be vindicated, 00:07:01.25\00:07:03.59 but it does not mean that 00:07:03.59\00:07:05.02 they are absent for any judgment process. 00:07:05.02\00:07:09.72 >>So they experience the judgment, 00:07:09.72\00:07:12.23 but the condemnation is what they don't have to experience, 00:07:12.23\00:07:16.33 and that's, I hope that's encouraging to you, 00:07:16.33\00:07:18.83 because it certainly is for me. 00:07:18.83\00:07:21.14 Let me toss another idea out here, another question. 00:07:21.14\00:07:25.77 Let's say that we believe 00:07:25.77\00:07:29.04 that when a person dies, they go immediately, 00:07:29.04\00:07:32.15 their soul or their spirit or something 00:07:32.15\00:07:34.45 goes immediately to heaven when they die, 00:07:34.45\00:07:36.85 or, for that matter, to hell or to purgatory. 00:07:36.85\00:07:40.09 If we take that position, 00:07:40.09\00:07:43.39 that we go immediately someplace when we die, 00:07:43.39\00:07:47.30 what's the purpose of the judgment? 00:07:48.83\00:07:51.67 What sense does the judgment make 00:07:51.67\00:07:55.40 if that's what we believe? 00:07:55.40\00:07:58.24 >>In that case, I think that 00:07:58.24\00:08:00.04 the judgment becomes meaningless. 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.84 Why to be judged if you are already rewarded, 00:08:02.84\00:08:06.55 if you are already in heaven or hell? 00:08:06.55\00:08:11.62 You could say that purgatory would be a stage of growing. 00:08:13.02\00:08:16.02 According to the Roman Catholic Church, 00:08:16.02\00:08:18.73 then you would be evaluated; you would be judged later on. 00:08:18.73\00:08:23.50 But if you believe in heaven and hell, 00:08:23.50\00:08:26.84 then that does not make any sense at all. 00:08:26.84\00:08:31.01 But, at the same time, what you will see, 00:08:31.01\00:08:36.08 in this case, that you would need 00:08:37.15\00:08:40.22 two judgments, a double judgment, 00:08:40.22\00:08:43.72 because Plato, 00:08:43.72\00:08:47.56 recording Socrates speaking, in his book "Phaedrus," 00:08:47.56\00:08:52.63 he speaks of a judgment immediately after death. 00:08:53.76\00:08:57.97 So, for people to be rewarded, 00:08:58.77\00:09:00.57 that requires a judgment after death, 00:09:00.57\00:09:04.51 and this concept has been incorporated 00:09:04.51\00:09:07.71 into the Roman Catholic tradition and also 00:09:07.71\00:09:12.61 into the evangelical circles as well, 00:09:12.61\00:09:16.52 to a large extent. So this is a concept 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.65 that comes from Greek philosophy; again, 00:09:19.65\00:09:22.42 a judgment, an individual judgment immediately after 00:09:22.42\00:09:26.53 death, but then you are judged again at the final judgment, 00:09:26.53\00:09:29.76 because this the Bible teaches, 00:09:29.76\00:09:31.93 so it's a matter of trying to combine the pagan 00:09:31.93\00:09:35.84 with the biblical concept of a judgment, 00:09:35.84\00:09:38.71 but, being already rewarded, I don't see any reason why 00:09:38.71\00:09:43.18 there is a need for a judgment later on, 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.51 especially the final judgment. 00:09:45.51\00:09:48.08 >>So you made mention of something here 00:09:48.08\00:09:49.72 about combining the pagan with the biblical. 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.25 Is this something that has gone on for a long time? 00:09:53.25\00:09:56.56 This doesn't sound like it's something new. 00:09:56.56\00:09:57.96 What are some of the dangers of trying to 00:09:57.96\00:10:01.80 combine the teachings of Plato or Socrates 00:10:01.80\00:10:05.07 with the teachings of the Bible? 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.10 Where does that lead us? Where does that end? 00:10:07.10\00:10:09.27 What's the end result of trying to do that? 00:10:09.27\00:10:11.94 >>You know, when you try to combine two things, 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.74 usually each one of them have to lose something 00:10:15.74\00:10:20.18 so that they can match together. 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.88 Of course, there were some kind of 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.15 punishments of Greek philosophy, 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.02 as we spoke in the past already, 00:10:28.02\00:10:30.26 but at the same time the Bible becomes adjusted 00:10:30.26\00:10:34.50 to philosophy to become more tasteful, so to say, and that's 00:10:34.50\00:10:39.37 what happened under the influence of Hellenism. 00:10:39.37\00:10:44.11 >>So what we're seeing is 00:10:45.64\00:10:47.18 the bringing of truth and error together, 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.98 and if you take truth and you mingle error into it, 00:10:49.98\00:10:53.58 it no longer remains truth, and the last time I checked, 00:10:53.58\00:10:57.25 the Bible says that "you [will] know the truth, 00:10:57.25\00:10:59.92 and the truth [will] make you free." 00:10:59.92\00:11:02.02 But if the truth ceases to be the truth, 00:11:02.02\00:11:05.69 then freedom ceases to be freedom, 00:11:05.69\00:11:08.63 and Jesus wants you to be free. 00:11:08.63\00:11:11.57 That's really one of the reasons 00:11:11.57\00:11:12.97 why we've been looking at this subject this quarter 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.94 for the last 13 weeks. We've been looking at 00:11:15.94\00:11:19.54 the subject of death, of dying, and of a future hope. 00:11:19.54\00:11:23.85 Jesus has a hope for you, He has a plan for you, 00:11:23.85\00:11:27.28 He has an expected end for you, 00:11:27.28\00:11:30.05 and the only real way that you can reach that expected end 00:11:30.05\00:11:33.96 is by trusting Him, is by having faith in Him, 00:11:33.96\00:11:37.46 is by allowing Him to guide you and direct you 00:11:37.46\00:11:41.46 and correct your course from time to time 00:11:41.46\00:11:44.80 because, in truth, we all need that correction. 00:11:44.80\00:11:48.24 Ultimately, His desire is 00:11:48.24\00:11:50.14 for you to experience life, eternal life, 00:11:50.14\00:11:54.81 for you to experience "that blessed hope, 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.51 and the glorious appearing of...Jesus Christ," 00:11:57.51\00:12:00.25 for you to wear that crown, 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.65 that immortal crown that Paul speaks of in his valedictory. 00:12:01.65\00:12:06.25 And that's available--to you, to me, to really everyone 00:12:06.25\00:12:10.56 if we choose to embrace and receive 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.29 the message of the gospel that Jesus has for us, 00:12:13.29\00:12:16.33 but how do we do that? 00:12:16.33\00:12:17.70 Well, it's by rejecting error and embracing truth, 00:12:17.70\00:12:21.87 rejecting combinations of truth and error, 00:12:21.87\00:12:25.24 which ultimately end up being error, 00:12:25.24\00:12:27.88 and embracing the pure gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:12:27.88\00:12:32.25 as we find it in His Word. 00:12:32.25\00:12:34.85 So, we hope that you have enjoyed this study, 00:12:34.85\00:12:37.82 and we're not done yet. We're continuing. 00:12:37.82\00:12:39.99 In fact, we still have a little ways to go, 00:12:39.99\00:12:43.43 but as we take a break here in just a moment, 00:12:43.43\00:12:45.83 I want to encourage you, if you haven't yet done it, 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.66 don't miss this opportunity to pick up the companion book 00:12:48.66\00:12:53.03 for this quarter's Sabbath school lesson. 00:12:53.03\00:12:55.40 It is of, course, by Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:12:55.40\00:12:57.61 It's called "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:12:57.61\00:13:02.18 and you can pick this up 00:13:02.18\00:13:03.48 on the It Is Written Shop at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:03.48\00:13:06.88 Again, that is itiswritten.shop. 00:13:06.88\00:13:09.45 The name of the book is 00:13:09.45\00:13:10.52 "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:13:10.52\00:13:13.22 and, of course, the author is Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:13:13.22\00:13:17.09 We are going to be back in just a couple of minutes 00:13:17.09\00:13:20.63 as we continue looking at this judgment, 00:13:20.63\00:13:23.26 finding out why it's so important for us, 00:13:23.26\00:13:26.60 and why God loves us enough 00:13:26.60\00:13:29.04 to send us through this judgment. 00:13:29.04\00:13:32.97 We'll be right back. 00:13:32.97\00:13:34.61 (inspirational theme music swells and ends) 00:13:34.61\00:13:37.28 >>[John Bradshaw] He spent 32 years in prison 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.02 for a crime he did not commit, 00:13:41.02\00:13:43.39 more than half his life behind bars, 00:13:43.39\00:13:45.39 even though he was an innocent man. 00:13:45.39\00:13:47.89 Junk science, false testimony, and shoddy investigative work 00:13:47.89\00:13:51.99 came together to send a man to prison 00:13:51.99\00:13:54.60 for more than three decades. 00:13:54.60\00:13:56.56 Join me for "Not Guilty," where you'll hear from the people 00:13:56.56\00:13:59.80 at the center of the exoneration of an innocent man. 00:13:59.80\00:14:03.17 We'll look not only at innocent people being free, 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.94 but at the phenomenon of guilty people being pardoned, 00:14:05.94\00:14:09.18 people who committed the offense, who broke the law, 00:14:09.18\00:14:11.75 and yet were set free by God Himself. 00:14:11.75\00:14:14.78 Every person alive has sinned 00:14:14.78\00:14:16.38 "and come short of the glory of God," 00:14:16.38\00:14:17.92 and yet God offers pardon and forgiveness to all, 00:14:17.92\00:14:21.19 absolutely free. 00:14:21.19\00:14:22.79 Don't miss "Not Guilty," where you'll learn that, 00:14:22.79\00:14:25.43 no matter your past, no matter your present, 00:14:25.43\00:14:27.93 you can face the future with confidence, without fear, 00:14:27.93\00:14:31.23 and with absolute hope. 00:14:31.23\00:14:32.80 "Not Guilty," 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.47 brought to you by It Is Written TV. 00:14:34.47\00:14:37.51 (inspirational theme music) 00:14:38.64\00:14:41.31 >>Welcome back to "Sabbath School," 00:14:43.35\00:14:44.78 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:14:44.78\00:14:46.72 We're looking at "The Judging Process" today 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.88 and trying to understand it just a little bit more. 00:14:49.88\00:14:52.92 Let me begin, Alberto, this next segment 00:14:52.92\00:14:55.69 with another question here for you. 00:14:55.69\00:14:57.53 If the judgment is going on right now, 00:14:59.33\00:15:02.30 which we believe that it is, the Bible indicates that it is, 00:15:02.30\00:15:05.60 but if the judgment is going on right now, 00:15:05.60\00:15:07.30 and my name comes up in the judgment, 00:15:07.30\00:15:10.61 what happens to my freedom of choice? 00:15:11.87\00:15:14.64 What happens to my free will after that? 00:15:14.64\00:15:17.55 Am I still free to choose? Does that nullify my free will? 00:15:17.55\00:15:22.38 What about if my name comes up right now? 00:15:22.38\00:15:24.69 >>I think that we have to ground our understanding of it 00:15:26.49\00:15:31.03 on a matter that-- 00:15:31.03\00:15:33.09 our understanding of divine foreknowledge. 00:15:33.09\00:15:37.60 Divine foreknowledge is absolute. 00:15:39.00\00:15:42.77 God knows everything, but it's not causative. 00:15:42.77\00:15:46.44 In other words, it's not because 00:15:46.44\00:15:49.34 God knows that things have to happen. 00:15:49.34\00:15:53.65 It's because they will happen. God knows already in advance, 00:15:53.65\00:15:58.52 and this distinction makes the whole difference 00:15:58.52\00:16:02.06 between one case or another one. 00:16:02.06\00:16:04.59 Some people say that God doesn't know. 00:16:04.59\00:16:07.30 Okay, in this case, God is absolved, so to say, 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.33 but if He knows, then it has to happen. That's not the case. 00:16:11.33\00:16:14.94 So God can can judge me based on His foreknowledge, 00:16:14.94\00:16:19.41 but I never will... 00:16:19.41\00:16:23.11 will never lose my free will 00:16:23.11\00:16:26.72 because He knows what I will be choosing. 00:16:26.72\00:16:29.65 So He knows if I will be saved or lost, 00:16:29.65\00:16:33.15 but He still pleads with me, 00:16:33.15\00:16:35.36 because His love and His nature, His character, 00:16:35.36\00:16:38.93 requires that He should always entreat me, 00:16:38.93\00:16:42.60 even if I will be lost, trying to beg with me, 00:16:42.60\00:16:47.17 plead with me, trying to, 00:16:47.17\00:16:49.77 to accept His offer of salvation. 00:16:49.77\00:16:52.74 >>So we still have that ability to choose. 00:16:53.78\00:16:55.94 He doesn't take that away from us, 00:16:55.94\00:16:57.48 and that's fantastic news. 00:16:57.48\00:16:59.78 Let me kind of drill down on something else here. 00:16:59.78\00:17:02.85 You gave this week's section 00:17:02.85\00:17:06.25 the title "The Judging Process." 00:17:06.25\00:17:10.33 You're not even implying that it's a process here. 00:17:10.33\00:17:13.09 You're explicitly stating this is a process. 00:17:13.09\00:17:16.40 It's not an act. 00:17:16.40\00:17:17.80 It's not something that just happens, but it's a process. 00:17:17.80\00:17:20.77 What are some of the stages in this process? 00:17:20.77\00:17:23.61 What is it that makes it a process 00:17:23.61\00:17:26.14 rather than a single act? 00:17:26.14\00:17:29.94 >>Actually, as we mentioned before, there are, 00:17:31.18\00:17:34.68 there were different judgments in biblical times. 00:17:34.68\00:17:38.79 For instance, you have, in the book of Ezekiel, 00:17:38.79\00:17:41.92 chapters 1-10, 00:17:41.92\00:17:46.16 the judgment of a nation over there, 00:17:46.16\00:17:49.70 and that's a classic one. 00:17:49.70\00:17:51.33 If you have a chance, I would invite you 00:17:51.33\00:17:53.87 to really, to read it through 00:17:53.87\00:17:55.47 and to see the judgment process over there 00:17:55.47\00:17:59.34 of the nation of Judah, or the kingdom of the south, 00:17:59.34\00:18:03.91 but we are speaking now about the eschatological, 00:18:03.91\00:18:08.75 the end-time judgment, the final judgment, 00:18:08.75\00:18:12.59 and I think that we have enough biblical evidence 00:18:12.59\00:18:15.56 at least three major phases 00:18:15.56\00:18:19.76 of this judgment. 00:18:19.76\00:18:21.40 If we go, for instance, to Daniel, chapter 7, 00:18:22.50\00:18:26.57 Daniel, chapter 7, 00:18:26.57\00:18:29.07 you will find, in verses 9-14-- 00:18:29.07\00:18:33.61 I will not read it for the sake of time, 00:18:33.61\00:18:35.81 but you can do it later on-- 00:18:35.81\00:18:38.11 "The Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven"-- 00:18:39.88\00:18:44.35 some people believe 00:18:44.35\00:18:45.49 because it's the coming of the clouds of heaven, 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.46 that it is the Second Coming. That's not the case; 00:18:47.46\00:18:50.76 it's the heavenly hosts, but He's not coming to this earth, 00:18:50.76\00:18:55.43 but He's coming to the Ancient of Days, 00:18:55.43\00:18:59.83 and there you have the description of a courtroom. 00:18:59.83\00:19:04.47 The books are open. 00:19:04.47\00:19:06.94 In apocalyptic language, whenever books are open, 00:19:06.94\00:19:10.71 it means the beginning of a judgment. 00:19:10.71\00:19:13.18 If you take this scene here, 00:19:14.25\00:19:16.72 and then you go to chapter 8, 00:19:16.72\00:19:19.45 you will see also in verses 9-14 00:19:19.45\00:19:24.36 a similar scene, and you will see that 00:19:24.36\00:19:28.70 then somebody asks, "When will the sanctuary be cleansed?" 00:19:28.70\00:19:33.77 It says that it will take place 00:19:34.57\00:19:36.71 after 2,300 evenings and mornings, 00:19:36.71\00:19:40.28 and it's a parallel to this... 00:19:40.28\00:19:44.25 judicial scene that we have in chapter 7, so they overlap. 00:19:46.01\00:19:50.45 So we have evidence-- 00:19:50.45\00:19:52.35 of course, time is not enough for us to unpack this-- 00:19:52.35\00:19:56.06 that investigative judgment will take place 00:19:56.06\00:20:00.46 prior, I mean, prior to the Second Coming, 00:20:00.46\00:20:04.10 starting at the end of this period, 00:20:04.10\00:20:06.57 that we have chronological, astronomical, 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.57 and exegetical basis that it started in 1844. 00:20:09.57\00:20:14.54 This would be the first phase of the judgment. 00:20:14.54\00:20:18.51 Then comes the second phase during the millennium, 00:20:18.51\00:20:22.05 and then comes the third one, 00:20:22.05\00:20:23.85 is the punishment of the wicked 00:20:23.85\00:20:28.76 at the end of the millennium. 00:20:28.76\00:20:30.73 And so this concept of judgment that Jesus spoke 00:20:30.73\00:20:35.40 is something that in the book of Revelation is very clear, 00:20:35.40\00:20:39.80 that Jesus even promised that, 00:20:39.80\00:20:43.81 and Paul says that we will be judging men 00:20:43.81\00:20:48.24 and even angels. 00:20:48.24\00:20:49.98 >>So, several phases of the judgment. 00:20:51.15\00:20:52.88 We're in the middle of one of them, 00:20:52.88\00:20:55.22 or maybe even some of them, 00:20:55.22\00:20:56.72 depending on how you wanna look at it right now, 00:20:56.72\00:20:58.59 and there are yet some to come. 00:20:58.59\00:21:00.32 Now, I wanna read a passage here. 00:21:00.32\00:21:01.69 It's actually the memory text for this week. 00:21:01.69\00:21:05.03 It's found in 2 Corinthians, chapter 5 and verse number 10. 00:21:05.03\00:21:09.53 It says, "For we must all appear 00:21:09.53\00:21:12.67 "before the judgment seat of Christ, 00:21:12.67\00:21:15.14 "that each one may receive the things done in the body, 00:21:15.14\00:21:18.84 according to what he has done, whether good or bad." 00:21:18.84\00:21:23.11 So here Paul says, "We must all appear 00:21:23.11\00:21:25.18 before the judgment seat of Christ." 00:21:25.18\00:21:26.82 Now, for some people, that sounds scary. It sounds, 00:21:26.82\00:21:31.89 it sounds like maybe they have something to fear. 00:21:33.25\00:21:35.69 Maybe they do, but every person 00:21:35.69\00:21:39.39 has to appear before the judgment seat of Christ, 00:21:39.39\00:21:43.10 but if we're afraid of the judgment, 00:21:43.10\00:21:44.63 we might be tempted to say, 00:21:44.63\00:21:45.93 "Well, I wish there wasn't a judgment." 00:21:45.93\00:21:48.34 It's been said that we don't really miss something 00:21:49.74\00:21:53.38 until it's gone, sometimes. 00:21:53.38\00:21:56.95 So what are the implications if there was no judgment? 00:21:56.95\00:22:01.48 If it didn't exist, 00:22:01.48\00:22:03.35 what would be some of those implications? 00:22:03.35\00:22:05.75 And are there reasons 00:22:05.75\00:22:07.09 why we should be glad that a judgment does exist? 00:22:07.09\00:22:10.53 >>Actually, if there would be no judgment, 00:22:12.23\00:22:16.20 I would be really frustrated because, in many cases, 00:22:16.20\00:22:19.73 I would need to do justice by myself, 00:22:19.73\00:22:23.07 because I know that there would be nothing happening 00:22:24.47\00:22:26.78 to those wicked people. 00:22:26.78\00:22:28.84 So, all this situation of an unjust world 00:22:29.91\00:22:33.95 is something--of course, we should try to do our best 00:22:33.95\00:22:37.92 in the sense of bringing justice to the world, 00:22:37.92\00:22:42.49 but there are things that escape our hands, 00:22:42.49\00:22:45.13 that we cannot handle, and those ones are the ones 00:22:45.13\00:22:48.73 that we trust that God will straighten up, 00:22:48.73\00:22:51.90 and this is a very important point, 00:22:51.90\00:22:54.40 but let me clarify, Eric, if you don't mind, another matter. 00:22:54.40\00:22:59.37 Some people might ask, 00:23:00.21\00:23:01.31 why do you speak about phases of judgment? 00:23:01.31\00:23:05.18 And this probably is the most significant part 00:23:05.18\00:23:08.38 for us to understand this process. 00:23:08.38\00:23:12.05 Remember something. 00:23:13.15\00:23:14.66 If everybody, as you read, Eric, 00:23:14.66\00:23:17.76 the passage that everybody will be judged, 00:23:17.76\00:23:20.90 and Paul is including himself in this judgment, 00:23:20.90\00:23:25.43 then it implies that not only wicked 00:23:25.43\00:23:29.77 but also the righteous will be judged. 00:23:29.77\00:23:33.68 And it always, the understanding of judgment in the Bible, 00:23:33.68\00:23:38.05 is directly dependent on 00:23:38.05\00:23:40.42 the human nature and the state of the dead. 00:23:40.42\00:23:44.62 Why? 00:23:44.62\00:23:46.12 Remember that the resurrections are the rewards already. 00:23:46.12\00:23:51.19 Either you will be raised 00:23:51.99\00:23:53.33 at the first resurrection that the Bible speaks 00:23:53.33\00:23:57.57 that takes place prior to the millennium, 00:23:57.57\00:24:01.87 to the 1,000 years, or, if you are not among the saved, 00:24:01.87\00:24:06.21 you will be raised at the second resurrection 00:24:06.21\00:24:09.44 after the millennium. 00:24:09.44\00:24:11.35 So, if a judgment has to take place 00:24:11.35\00:24:14.75 or people has to be judged, they have to be judged 00:24:14.75\00:24:19.39 prior to the resurrection that is already the reward. 00:24:19.39\00:24:24.46 There is not this thing, 00:24:25.13\00:24:26.49 "Well, you were raised here in the first resurrection, 00:24:26.49\00:24:29.40 "but, sorry, we came to the conclusion 00:24:29.40\00:24:31.70 "after judging your case 00:24:31.70\00:24:33.17 "that you don't belong to this group. 00:24:33.17\00:24:35.17 "You have to go back and to be raised 00:24:35.17\00:24:37.11 in the second resurrection," 00:24:37.11\00:24:39.04 or, "Sorry that we waited till the second resurrection 00:24:39.04\00:24:42.88 because you should be raised in the first one." 00:24:42.88\00:24:45.78 So, those who will be raised at the first resurrection, 00:24:45.78\00:24:50.85 that is already the reward, 00:24:51.65\00:24:53.49 will be judged prior to that resurrection, 00:24:53.49\00:24:57.96 and those that will be raised at the second resurrection, 00:24:57.96\00:25:02.30 those will be judged during the millennium, 00:25:02.30\00:25:06.03 and then this one the saints will be part of 00:25:06.03\00:25:09.50 so that they can know that 00:25:09.50\00:25:11.71 whatever God did was the best thing, 00:25:11.71\00:25:14.88 and the final destruction of the wicked 00:25:14.88\00:25:19.88 is actually an act of mercy 00:25:19.88\00:25:23.32 from the part of God because, actually, 00:25:23.32\00:25:28.19 the wicked would not feel at home in heaven, 00:25:28.19\00:25:31.59 so He simply makes them cease to exist. 00:25:31.59\00:25:36.56 They will receive their punishment, 00:25:36.56\00:25:38.73 but there is not an everlasting hell, 00:25:38.73\00:25:42.50 and this is something, good news. 00:25:42.50\00:25:44.84 You should not fear the judgment, the final judgment, 00:25:44.84\00:25:49.44 for one simple reason. The judgment will be 00:25:49.44\00:25:53.68 the vindication of those who are in Christ. 00:25:53.68\00:25:57.99 So they are good news of the judgment, 00:25:57.99\00:26:00.82 but, of course, it will be the punishment 00:26:00.82\00:26:03.32 for those who refuse to be with Christ, 00:26:03.32\00:26:06.19 and that makes the whole difference. 00:26:06.19\00:26:08.86 >>You know, what you just shared, Alberto, 00:26:08.86\00:26:10.67 reminds me of a passage at the very end of the Bible 00:26:10.67\00:26:13.27 in Revelation 22, verses 11 and 12. 00:26:13.27\00:26:16.77 It says, "He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; 00:26:16.77\00:26:20.34 "he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; 00:26:20.34\00:26:23.18 "he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; 00:26:23.18\00:26:26.31 [and] he who is holy, let him be holy still." 00:26:26.31\00:26:28.65 And then in verse number 12 he says, 00:26:28.65\00:26:30.92 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with 00:26:30.92\00:26:35.99 me, to give to every one according to his work." 00:26:37.06\00:26:39.53 So the good news is Jesus is coming back soon. 00:26:39.53\00:26:42.80 He has his reward for every person, 00:26:42.80\00:26:45.20 and if you are among the righteous, 00:26:45.20\00:26:47.50 you will be righteous still. 00:26:47.50\00:26:48.87 If you are among the just, you will be just still. 00:26:48.87\00:26:52.94 If, in the judgment, 00:26:52.94\00:26:54.38 you are found saved, you are saved forever, 00:26:54.38\00:26:57.88 and I hope that that's an encouragement to you, 00:26:57.88\00:27:00.85 because it really should be. 00:27:00.85\00:27:03.22 Well, we're gonna come back again for one more week 00:27:03.22\00:27:05.55 as we take a last look at 00:27:05.55\00:27:07.59 this subject of "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:27:07.59\00:27:10.89 We're going to end on a high note, 00:27:10.89\00:27:13.90 and you probably expected that we would 00:27:13.90\00:27:16.73 because the Bible ends on a very high note. 00:27:16.73\00:27:19.93 So next week we're gonna come back again. 00:27:19.93\00:27:21.94 We're gonna look at the last lesson in this quarter, 00:27:21.94\00:27:26.31 and we hope that you've been blessed, 00:27:26.31\00:27:28.11 that you've been able to look at this subject 00:27:28.11\00:27:29.91 from perhaps a new perspective. 00:27:29.91\00:27:32.38 Maybe you've been reaffirmed in what you already believed, 00:27:32.38\00:27:36.28 but either way, I hope that you will take 00:27:36.28\00:27:38.29 the beauty of this Bible teaching and share it with 00:27:38.29\00:27:42.49 others so that they can have hope in Jesus as well. 00:27:42.49\00:27:45.06 God bless you, have a wonderful day, 00:27:45.06\00:27:47.30 and we will see you next time. 00:27:47.30\00:27:49.80 (inspirational theme music) 00:27:49.80\00:27:52.47 (music ends) 00:28:24.30\00:28:27.77
