(uplifting theme music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:03.10 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.27\00:00:14.44 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.44\00:00:16.51 We're glad that you've chosen to join us today 00:00:16.51\00:00:18.65 as you continue your study of this quarter's lesson. 00:00:18.65\00:00:23.02 The subject is on "Death, Dying and the Future Hope." 00:00:23.02\00:00:26.76 And our hope is that your hope will be increased 00:00:26.76\00:00:29.82 as we study this week's lesson together. 00:00:29.82\00:00:32.26 We are on lesson number seven, a very uplifting lesson, 00:00:32.26\00:00:37.00 as you would expect it probably would be being number seven. 00:00:37.00\00:00:40.54 But also we are here joined 00:00:40.54\00:00:42.57 by the author's lesson, and that is Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:00:42.57\00:00:45.87 He is an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:45.87\00:00:50.11 Alberto, welcome back. 00:00:50.11\00:00:52.11 >>So glad to join you. 00:00:52.11\00:00:54.35 >>Alberto, this week we are looking 00:00:54.35\00:00:55.75 at "Christ's Victory Over Death, 00:00:55.75\00:00:58.52 and as we look at this particular subject, 00:00:58.52\00:01:01.12 I wanna start by reading a verse, 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.06 and it happens to be the memory verse for this quarter-- 00:01:04.06\00:01:07.60 or, pardon me, for this week's lesson. It's Revelation, 00:01:07.60\00:01:10.93 chapter 1 and verses 17 and 18. 00:01:10.93\00:01:15.64 Revelation 1:17 and 18 says, "And when I saw Him"-- 00:01:15.64\00:01:19.27 this is John speaking--"I fell at His feet as dead. 00:01:19.27\00:01:22.18 "But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.75 "'Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 00:01:24.75\00:01:28.28 "'I am He who lives, and was dead, 00:01:28.28\00:01:31.29 "'and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. 00:01:31.29\00:01:35.42 And I have the keys of Hades and of death.'" 00:01:35.42\00:01:40.46 We've been looking at death, dying this quarter, 00:01:40.46\00:01:44.97 also looking at the hope that that we have yet to come. 00:01:44.97\00:01:48.47 But bearing these verses in mind that we just read, 00:01:50.37\00:01:54.38 what hope does a person have 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.75 if their body is deteriorated, 00:01:59.88\00:02:03.25 if there's nothing left of them but ashes, but dirt? 00:02:03.25\00:02:07.69 Maybe there's not even that. Maybe they were lost at sea. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.63 How can a resurrection take place 00:02:10.63\00:02:13.26 if there's so little to work with-- 00:02:13.26\00:02:14.93 or in some cases really nothing to work with--left? 00:02:14.93\00:02:19.63 What hope is there in that? 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.50 >>Well, from a human perspective, 00:02:21.50\00:02:23.34 there is no hope whatsoever because the person is gone. 00:02:23.34\00:02:27.51 So this is something. 00:02:27.51\00:02:29.94 But from the perspective of God's power, 00:02:29.94\00:02:34.55 His promise, and His word, 00:02:34.55\00:02:38.02 I would say that there is no reason for us to doubt. 00:02:38.02\00:02:42.79 After all, life in itself 00:02:42.79\00:02:46.53 is a mystery. 00:02:46.53\00:02:48.46 Sometimes I look to a flower or a leaf from a tree, 00:02:48.46\00:02:53.44 and you see how does it come 00:02:54.34\00:02:55.64 that it has life, and what is life? 00:02:55.64\00:02:59.04 You can come with all kinds of philosophy 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.28 to explain what is life, 00:03:01.28\00:03:02.84 but we haven't been able to create life. 00:03:02.84\00:03:05.85 So the mystery of life that is all around us, 00:03:05.85\00:03:10.65 the grass and so on--and don't confuse it with God, 00:03:10.65\00:03:14.22 because this is just a expression of His creating 00:03:14.22\00:03:17.59 power, not extension of God itself, and the same thing with 00:03:17.59\00:03:22.43 us. Life is a mystery and how it began also. 00:03:22.43\00:03:27.27 God created in this way. 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.74 If God was able to create human beings 00:03:29.74\00:03:34.41 from the ground and through His power, 00:03:34.41\00:03:38.01 and power to His power, 00:03:38.01\00:03:41.52 the non-life came into life, 00:03:41.52\00:03:44.85 and this is a mystery. 00:03:44.85\00:03:46.49 I think it would be less complex 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.09 to, for God to bring life again into existence 00:03:50.09\00:03:54.96 with our own identity. How it will take place, 00:03:54.96\00:03:59.43 this is something with God. But we know from His sure word, 00:03:59.43\00:04:03.27 and is not one passage, but is a motif, 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.01 is a team in the Bible, the concept of resurrection, 00:04:06.01\00:04:10.45 and that we will be known as such, because even Jesus said 00:04:10.45\00:04:15.18 that we would be with Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac, 00:04:15.18\00:04:19.09 and so in that gathering over there, 00:04:19.09\00:04:22.19 so how do we know that those are the people? 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.26 Because God, even our own identity, will preserve. 00:04:25.26\00:04:30.10 >>So we've got something to look forward to, 00:04:30.10\00:04:32.97 encouraging promises in the Bible. 00:04:32.97\00:04:35.60 But really all of those promises are dependent 00:04:35.60\00:04:38.67 upon the fact that Jesus Himself rose. 00:04:38.67\00:04:41.98 Because if He didn't rise, 00:04:41.98\00:04:44.78 well, we'd be in a pickle. 00:04:44.78\00:04:47.82 I don't know that that's a deep theological word, 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.58 but it's what we'd be in. 00:04:49.58\00:04:51.52 Let's come back to Jesus' resurrection. 00:04:51.52\00:04:54.39 When Jesus did rise, 00:04:54.39\00:04:58.33 that caused a bit of consternation 00:04:58.33\00:05:01.10 among some of the priests and the Pharisees. 00:05:01.10\00:05:05.40 They didn't want anyone to believe 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.30 that Jesus was alive again. 00:05:08.30\00:05:10.87 What were some of the strategies that they used? 00:05:10.87\00:05:12.87 What were some ways that they went about trying to obscure 00:05:12.87\00:05:17.38 that very positive fact? 00:05:17.38\00:05:20.68 >>First of all, they went to Pilate 00:05:21.75\00:05:26.12 and asked him to have some kind of sealing, 00:05:26.12\00:05:30.86 to have a huge stone... 00:05:30.86\00:05:32.99 at the entrance of the tomb, and then to put a Roman seal, 00:05:34.36\00:05:39.17 and even more, some kind of Roman soldiers, powerful ones, 00:05:40.54\00:05:44.47 so there would be no way for somebody to steal, 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.54 to take Jesus' body out. 00:05:48.54\00:05:52.85 And that was--they were a little bit afraid 00:05:52.85\00:05:55.18 about this matter, but that was a strategy 00:05:55.18\00:05:57.95 so that they would not steal Jesus' body 00:05:57.95\00:06:01.32 and then later on claim that He was risen, 00:06:01.32\00:06:04.56 and so they decided to protect in this way. 00:06:04.56\00:06:08.10 It did not work out as expected. 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.23 Then they try even to pay some money for them to, 00:06:11.23\00:06:15.67 for the soldiers to give a wrong witness. 00:06:15.67\00:06:19.07 "No, we were asleep over there. 00:06:19.07\00:06:21.71 "We were a little bit distracted, and so, 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.75 "and then when we did not pay enough attention, 00:06:24.75\00:06:27.92 they took Jesus' body." 00:06:27.92\00:06:31.99 But nothing of this 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.72 prevented Jesus from raising. Actually it made, 00:06:36.02\00:06:40.23 it helped to make Jesus' resurrection even more dramatic 00:06:40.23\00:06:45.17 than if it would be just here being laying there 00:06:45.17\00:06:49.20 and coming back to life. 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.97 >>So Jesus managed to thwart them 00:06:52.04\00:06:55.94 through His resurrection. 00:06:55.94\00:06:58.08 Here's a question that sometimes gets asked. 00:06:58.08\00:07:02.35 When Jesus rose, 00:07:02.35\00:07:05.19 depending on which gospel you want to read the account from, 00:07:05.19\00:07:09.79 it talks about there being an angel at His tomb 00:07:09.79\00:07:12.86 or there being angels, plural, at His tomb. 00:07:12.86\00:07:16.87 Which was it? 00:07:16.87\00:07:18.73 >>Well, this is a very interesting question. 00:07:19.87\00:07:22.00 It's worthwhile reflecting on it. 00:07:22.00\00:07:24.41 You find two gospels that speak of two angels 00:07:24.41\00:07:29.21 at the resurrection, close to the tomb. 00:07:29.21\00:07:32.61 Anther two gospels speak of just one. 00:07:32.61\00:07:36.35 So, which one do you prefer? 00:07:36.35\00:07:38.29 Which one do you want to stay with? 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.82 This is not the way how we interpret the Bible. 00:07:40.82\00:07:44.69 The best way is always, in my understanding, 00:07:44.69\00:07:48.46 always to take the most complete picture. 00:07:48.46\00:07:52.57 And let me distract a little bit from this topic. 00:07:52.57\00:07:56.30 For instance, in the Bible you have references 00:07:56.30\00:07:59.17 to God the Father. 00:07:59.17\00:08:01.44 You have many other references to God the Father 00:08:01.44\00:08:04.48 and the Son. And you have other passages that speak 00:08:04.48\00:08:08.15 of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:08:08.15\00:08:11.02 With which line of passages do I stay? 00:08:11.02\00:08:16.09 Some people just decide what they prefer, 00:08:17.13\00:08:20.66 but this is not the case. 00:08:20.66\00:08:22.36 We should always take the most comprehensive, 00:08:22.36\00:08:25.57 the broader picture in mind. 00:08:25.57\00:08:27.40 Otherwise you will always distort the Bible. 00:08:27.40\00:08:31.11 If I say, "Well, there is only the Father. 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.58 The Son and the Holy Spirit do not exist," 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.64 that's not the case because the Bible refers to the three. 00:08:35.64\00:08:40.12 And the same thing, it happens in this case. 00:08:40.12\00:08:42.48 I believe that they were two angels 00:08:42.48\00:08:45.45 because the text is clear. 00:08:45.45\00:08:47.92 But the other two gospels were not concerned 00:08:47.92\00:08:50.83 about the number of angels, 00:08:50.83\00:08:52.99 but only about the angel that was speaking over there. 00:08:52.99\00:08:56.36 So I believe that there are two angels, 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.57 and I don't see any contradiction, 00:08:58.57\00:09:01.20 just the emphasis of the other ones was--so, 00:09:01.20\00:09:05.04 I could say, for instance, "You came by car." 00:09:05.04\00:09:09.61 Okay, I am not saying that you came alone. 00:09:09.61\00:09:12.85 There might be other people in the car, 00:09:12.85\00:09:14.75 but I was concerned in you arriving here. 00:09:14.75\00:09:18.45 And so this does not exclude more people. 00:09:18.45\00:09:22.12 And so I don't think that a reference to one angel 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.76 exclude the other one that was also there. 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.30 >>So, makes a lot of sense. There's every bit of evidence 00:09:28.30\00:09:31.30 that there were two angels instead of just one. 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.64 Let me come back to a... 00:09:34.64\00:09:38.21 less...diminutive question, I guess, 00:09:39.34\00:09:44.41 and a more impactful question. 00:09:45.21\00:09:47.52 And that is, what about Christ's resurrection? 00:09:47.52\00:09:49.75 What's the meaning of Christ's resurrection? 00:09:49.75\00:09:52.72 If we want to get down to the depths of things, 00:09:52.72\00:09:55.89 what is the significance, 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.19 the meaning of Christ's resurrection? 00:09:57.19\00:09:59.19 Why is it important to us? 00:09:59.19\00:10:01.06 >>Actually that was the seal 00:10:02.10\00:10:05.30 of approval 00:10:05.30\00:10:08.07 on Christ's sacrifice on the cross. 00:10:08.07\00:10:12.84 Actually we cannot isolate 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.88 the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection 00:10:15.88\00:10:19.58 because this is a whole package. 00:10:19.58\00:10:21.95 But actually if Christ would just die 00:10:21.95\00:10:25.65 and not raise from the dead, as Paul says, for instance, 00:10:25.65\00:10:30.33 in 1 Corinthians 15, then we would be lost. 00:10:30.33\00:10:35.36 But in reality, the power, 00:10:36.26\00:10:38.23 the One that raised people from the dead 00:10:38.23\00:10:41.14 during His lifetime-- 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.50 and special reference we can make to Lazarus-- 00:10:42.50\00:10:47.11 now He Himself experienced death, 00:10:47.11\00:10:51.08 and actually He did not die only the first death. 00:10:51.08\00:10:56.05 He died the second death. And what does it mean? 00:10:57.49\00:11:00.36 The first death is the natural death that we die. 00:11:00.36\00:11:04.43 But the second death, 00:11:04.43\00:11:05.93 that will be the final destruction of the wicked. 00:11:05.93\00:11:09.33 There are--there is no resurrection from that death, 00:11:09.33\00:11:13.34 that form of death. 00:11:13.34\00:11:15.20 But His death is vicarious, 00:11:15.20\00:11:18.57 or, in other words, He died for us so that we, 00:11:18.57\00:11:22.64 although we might face the natural death, 00:11:22.64\00:11:25.48 we will not need to face the second death. 00:11:25.48\00:11:29.68 And, but instead, we will have everlasting life. 00:11:29.68\00:11:32.99 And this is very meaningful. 00:11:32.99\00:11:35.26 Actually when Jesus rose from the graves, 00:11:35.26\00:11:39.56 there from the grave, that was really the seal, 00:11:39.56\00:11:43.33 the final proof that He triumphed. 00:11:43.33\00:11:46.27 He got a victory at the cross, 00:11:46.27\00:11:49.07 and now that He triumphed over the powers of evil, 00:11:49.07\00:11:53.78 and there was no more hope for Satan and his angels 00:11:53.78\00:11:58.31 that they would be able to gain the victory of Christ. 00:11:58.31\00:12:02.08 That was the final word. And that's it! 00:12:02.08\00:12:05.85 >>So when Jesus rose, 00:12:06.62\00:12:08.32 that settled things in a very final manner, 00:12:08.32\00:12:12.36 which for you and for me, hopefully, is a good thing 00:12:12.36\00:12:16.67 because that means that we have the hope of eternal life, 00:12:16.67\00:12:19.23 and without Christ's resurrection, 00:12:19.23\00:12:20.84 without His death on the cross, we wouldn't have that hope 00:12:20.84\00:12:24.14 because He wouldn't have paid that price. 00:12:24.14\00:12:25.87 He wouldn't have tasted death for every man. 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.91 But the good news is He did. The good news is He rose. 00:12:28.91\00:12:32.21 The good news is that today He is up in heaven 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.22 ministering on my behalf and your behalf. 00:12:35.22\00:12:39.12 And because of that, because we have an intercessor, 00:12:39.12\00:12:42.52 that means we can "come boldly to the throne of grace" 00:12:42.52\00:12:46.56 and seek that help that we need 00:12:46.56\00:12:48.43 because we cannot save ourselves. 00:12:48.43\00:12:50.60 We simply don't have the ability to. 00:12:50.60\00:12:53.10 But that's why Jesus is there to offer salvation to us. 00:12:53.10\00:12:57.27 I wanna encourage you, if you've been enjoying 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.24 this quarter's Sabbath school lesson, 00:12:59.24\00:13:00.48 make sure you pick up the companion book 00:13:00.48\00:13:02.91 to this quarter's lesson. 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.05 It's "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:04.05\00:13:06.68 The author is Alberto Timm, 00:13:06.68\00:13:08.08 and you can find that at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:08.08\00:13:11.35 Again, that's itiswritten.shop. 00:13:11.35\00:13:13.96 You can find the book 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.02 "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:15.02\00:13:17.09 It goes into greater detail on what we've been studying here 00:13:17.09\00:13:20.20 week by week. 00:13:20.20\00:13:21.23 I know that you'll enjoy it. 00:13:21.23\00:13:22.33 We're gonna be back in just a minute or two 00:13:22.33\00:13:24.70 as we continue looking at this incredible subject, 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.10 "Christ's Victory Over Death." 00:13:27.10\00:13:29.04 We'll see you back in just a moment. 00:13:29.04\00:13:30.71 (theme music swells and ends) 00:13:30.71\00:13:33.48 >>[John Bradshaw] You know that at It Is Written 00:13:35.34\00:13:36.98 we are serious about studying the Word of God, 00:13:36.98\00:13:39.38 and we encourage you to be serious as well. 00:13:39.38\00:13:42.12 Well, here's what you do 00:13:42.12\00:13:43.12 if you wanna dig deeper into God's Word. 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.22 Go to itiswritten.study 00:13:45.22\00:13:47.46 for the It Is Written Bible Study Guides online, 00:13:47.46\00:13:50.43 25 in-depth Bible studies 00:13:50.43\00:13:52.33 that will take you through the major teachings of the Bible. 00:13:52.33\00:13:55.40 You'll be blessed, 00:13:55.40\00:13:56.97 and it's something you'll want to tell others about as well: 00:13:56.97\00:13:58.73 itiswritten.study. But the resurrection of Christ 00:15:34.93\00:15:38.70 was the triumphant outcome of it. 00:15:38.70\00:15:43.04 Because when Satan failed to... 00:15:43.04\00:15:48.04 keep Him, I mean, in the grave, 00:15:48.84\00:15:52.11 and Christ came into life, that was actually the seal 00:15:52.11\00:15:56.92 of everything, as I mentioned before. 00:15:56.92\00:16:00.32 In other words, the guarantee, 00:16:00.32\00:16:02.92 the prototype or whatever word you want to use, 00:16:02.92\00:16:06.80 that we or those who died in Christ 00:16:06.80\00:16:10.53 will raise also. 00:16:10.53\00:16:12.23 So He opened the gates of that. 00:16:12.23\00:16:16.40 And in the book of Revelation, even you have that image that 00:16:16.40\00:16:19.54 He has the keys that unlock the grave 00:16:19.54\00:16:23.71 so that we all can have hope. 00:16:23.71\00:16:26.38 Whether we stay alive till Jesus comes 00:16:26.38\00:16:29.75 or we are called to death, whatever, 00:16:29.75\00:16:32.49 God knows what will be the best in this case, 00:16:32.49\00:16:36.52 but we have a hope that goes far beyond the grave. 00:16:36.52\00:16:41.03 And that one was assured to Christ's death 00:16:41.03\00:16:44.63 paying the price for us, and His resurrection 00:16:44.63\00:16:47.60 opening the doors for us also to have this wonderful hope. 00:16:47.60\00:16:52.01 >>So there's hope in both His death and His resurrection. 00:16:52.01\00:16:55.61 That's encouraging. 00:16:55.61\00:16:56.98 Alberto, let me share a few verses with you 00:16:56.98\00:17:00.42 and get your thoughts on them, 00:17:00.42\00:17:01.75 because when we talk about Christ's resurrection, 00:17:01.75\00:17:03.72 there are some things that happened around that time 00:17:03.72\00:17:06.32 that sometimes people have questions about, 00:17:06.32\00:17:08.42 that don't seem to make sense. 00:17:08.42\00:17:10.59 I wanna read one here, a passage from Matthew, chapter 27. 00:17:10.59\00:17:14.93 In Matthew, chapter 27, verses 51-53, 00:17:14.93\00:17:19.87 it says this: "Then, behold, the veil of the temple 00:17:19.87\00:17:23.81 "was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, 00:17:23.81\00:17:27.88 "and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; 00:17:27.88\00:17:31.58 "and many bodies of the saints 00:17:31.58\00:17:33.58 "who had fallen asleep were raised; 00:17:33.58\00:17:36.48 "and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, 00:17:36.48\00:17:39.85 they went into the holy city and appeared to many." 00:17:39.85\00:17:44.79 Who were these people who came back to life 00:17:44.79\00:17:49.83 at this significant time? 00:17:50.63\00:17:52.53 >>We don't know exactly by name who was there, 00:17:54.14\00:17:57.04 but we know that people from the Old Testament, 00:17:57.04\00:17:59.57 some of the prophets, definitely so, 00:17:59.57\00:18:02.04 and please do not speculate saying this was the one or so. 00:18:02.04\00:18:05.88 Some people even argue that John the Baptist, 00:18:05.88\00:18:09.05 Jesus allowed him to die 00:18:09.05\00:18:11.42 so that He could raise among them. 00:18:11.42\00:18:15.29 This is a possibility, 00:18:15.29\00:18:16.59 but I would not make a big deal out of it 00:18:16.59\00:18:19.13 because it's just a possibility out of imagination. 00:18:19.13\00:18:24.17 But you know that a group, significant group of people, 00:18:25.53\00:18:28.34 I mean, of the Old Testament times, were raised. 00:18:28.34\00:18:33.21 And this is very significant, outstanding because 00:18:33.21\00:18:38.28 you remember that the Pharisees, 00:18:39.08\00:18:42.68 the high--I mean, the priesthood at that time, 00:18:42.68\00:18:46.32 they were all planning some strategies 00:18:46.32\00:18:49.62 to avoid the body of Jesus to be robbed, 00:18:49.62\00:18:54.40 to be taken there, and also not to be-- 00:18:54.40\00:18:57.73 and then later on they even bribed the... 00:18:57.73\00:19:02.50 I mean, the soldiers 00:19:02.50\00:19:05.04 in a certain way for them to lie. 00:19:05.04\00:19:08.58 But can you imagine? The Bible passage here 00:19:08.58\00:19:11.01 that you just read is so clear, 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.52 because it says that many of those raised from the dead. 00:19:13.52\00:19:17.75 So there was a earthquake when Jesus died, 00:19:17.75\00:19:21.29 and another earthquake when He raised up. 00:19:21.29\00:19:24.19 So it was quite significant. 00:19:24.19\00:19:26.80 And with Jesus came all this people from the grave. 00:19:26.80\00:19:31.40 We don't know how many, who they are, 00:19:31.40\00:19:33.77 but it does not matter. 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.97 What really matters here is that, as the text says, 00:19:35.97\00:19:40.34 that they went into the city of Jerusalem, definitely so, 00:19:40.34\00:19:45.21 where things were happening, and appeared to many. 00:19:45.21\00:19:49.68 That really was a trouble for all those high priests 00:19:49.68\00:19:54.76 and religious leaders at that time 00:19:55.79\00:19:56.83 because they were trying to spread around 00:19:56.83\00:20:00.50 some fake news--using our language--at that time. 00:20:00.50\00:20:04.57 And it didn't work because 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.50 as they were speaking in one place, 00:20:06.50\00:20:08.60 somebody came--"Well, this is not true! 00:20:08.60\00:20:10.74 "This is a lie because I raised with Christ also, and I am 00:20:10.74\00:20:15.34 a eye witness of Jesus' resurrection." 00:20:15.34\00:20:20.42 So no wonder that apostolic preaching at the beginning 00:20:21.78\00:20:24.09 was not only that Christ died, but He raised from the dead, 00:20:24.09\00:20:29.09 and the resurrection was crucial 00:20:29.09\00:20:32.29 because that was the victory. 00:20:32.29\00:20:34.83 And this generated a whole---not saying turmoil-- 00:20:34.83\00:20:38.80 but there was quite a-- 00:20:38.80\00:20:41.04 from the disappointment 00:20:41.04\00:20:45.51 of the cross into the victory, 00:20:45.51\00:20:49.01 the good news of the resurrection. 00:20:49.01\00:20:51.58 And nobody could stop the disciples of Christ 00:20:51.58\00:20:56.12 and the early Christians from spreading this news 00:20:56.12\00:21:00.56 around because it was too powerful, the whole context 00:21:00.56\00:21:05.13 and even these witnesses appearing to many. 00:21:05.13\00:21:09.50 >>You know, when we look at this portion of earth's history, 00:21:09.50\00:21:14.14 there are elements, significant-- 00:21:14.14\00:21:17.51 what do you call it?--experiences in earth's 00:21:17.51\00:21:20.34 history that are marked by three-word phrases. 00:21:20.34\00:21:23.68 I think all the way back 00:21:23.68\00:21:24.71 to the very beginning in Genesis 1:1. 00:21:24.71\00:21:26.61 It says, "In the beginning." >>Mm-hmm. 00:21:26.61\00:21:29.05 >>Now we come down here to Christ on the cross 00:21:29.05\00:21:31.92 and the three words "It is finished" are significant words. 00:21:31.92\00:21:36.09 And then the empty tomb, the empty grave: 00:21:36.09\00:21:39.69 "He is risen." 00:21:39.69\00:21:42.36 So, just simple synopses of significant things 00:21:42.36\00:21:45.83 that are going on here. 00:21:45.83\00:21:47.14 Let's take a look at something else here 00:21:47.14\00:21:48.97 over in 1 Corinthians 15. In 1 Corinthians, chapter 15, 00:21:48.97\00:21:53.94 verses 16 and 18, 00:21:53.94\00:21:58.11 Paul writes about the significance 00:21:58.11\00:22:00.68 of Christ's resurrection for us-- 00:22:00.68\00:22:04.42 for him, but certainly for us as well; 00:22:04.42\00:22:07.92 1 Corinthians 15, verse number 16, here's what Paul says. 00:22:07.92\00:22:12.83 He says, "For if the dead do not rise, 00:22:12.83\00:22:16.77 then Christ is not risen." 00:22:16.77\00:22:20.24 In verse 18 he says, "Then also those 00:22:20.24\00:22:22.74 who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished." 00:22:22.74\00:22:26.91 And verse 19: "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, 00:22:26.91\00:22:31.21 we are of all men the most pitiable." 00:22:31.21\00:22:35.52 Paul is making a very important statement here. 00:22:35.52\00:22:38.55 What point is he trying to get across? 00:22:38.55\00:22:40.86 >>Well, in this case, Paul is going even a step farther 00:22:42.22\00:22:46.86 in the sense of being more explicit. 00:22:46.86\00:22:49.76 Let's suppose that all the teachings of the Old Testament 00:22:49.76\00:22:54.34 and New Testament on the state of the dead, 00:22:54.34\00:22:58.31 that they are unconscious in the grave 00:22:58.31\00:23:01.91 and that the only hope is the resurrection, 00:23:01.91\00:23:06.98 the bodily resurrection for people to get conscious 00:23:08.32\00:23:10.99 and come alive again, 00:23:10.99\00:23:13.32 if that is not enough, Paul here says, 00:23:13.32\00:23:16.42 well, in other words, he says, 00:23:16.42\00:23:19.03 well, if there is no resurrection, 00:23:19.03\00:23:23.83 there is no hope because those who are in Christ, 00:23:23.83\00:23:28.24 they perished in this case. How could Paul say 00:23:28.24\00:23:33.01 that if those who died in Christ are perished, 00:23:33.01\00:23:38.01 or will have no life, if the soul goes directly-- 00:23:38.01\00:23:42.32 the supposed soul--would go directly to paradise, 00:23:42.32\00:23:45.22 heaven, or whatever you want to call it, after death? 00:23:45.22\00:23:49.72 Because then they would be already in their reward. 00:23:49.72\00:23:54.20 But Paul says, no, without resurrection, please, 00:23:54.20\00:23:58.87 there is no everlasting life. 00:23:58.87\00:24:02.60 So in this case, I don't think that we need a clearer text 00:24:02.60\00:24:07.61 than this one that you just read. 00:24:07.61\00:24:10.58 >>So Paul says we do have that hope. 00:24:11.71\00:24:13.98 Now, unpack it just a little bit more. 00:24:13.98\00:24:16.79 How does the death of Christ... 00:24:16.79\00:24:20.12 assure our own salvation? How do we find ourselves in that? 00:24:20.12\00:24:24.83 How can we be sure that if He died and rose again, 00:24:24.83\00:24:28.20 that we can partake of that as well? 00:24:28.20\00:24:30.90 >>Actually He is the the first one to be raised, 00:24:32.30\00:24:37.24 as such. Not the first one because there were people there, 00:24:37.24\00:24:40.41 but He's really the one that opened the way of the gates. 00:24:40.41\00:24:45.01 And to be participating of His death 00:24:45.01\00:24:49.12 and resurrection is something very significant for us 00:24:49.12\00:24:52.92 because, in reality, Christ's death, 00:24:52.92\00:24:57.89 as I mentioned before, paid the price. 00:24:59.13\00:25:01.16 But now His resurrection is the guarantee, 00:25:01.16\00:25:05.70 the word that all the other ones that died in Christ, 00:25:05.70\00:25:10.34 they will have also the hope of a resurrection. 00:25:10.34\00:25:13.71 And you don't need a stronger evidence 00:25:13.71\00:25:17.91 for the resurrection 00:25:17.91\00:25:18.98 than the resurrection of Christ Himself. 00:25:18.98\00:25:22.85 Of course, there are people that deny the resurrection 00:25:22.85\00:25:25.45 of Christ today. 00:25:25.45\00:25:27.42 But if you deny that Christ actually died 00:25:27.42\00:25:32.06 and that He raised from the dead, 00:25:32.06\00:25:34.40 then there is no hope left for us. 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.97 But we have this blessed assurance. 00:25:36.97\00:25:39.53 And probably in your mind you will have some hymns, 00:25:39.53\00:25:44.11 some songs about the resurrection, 00:25:44.11\00:25:46.84 that He is risen again and so on in triumph over death. 00:25:46.84\00:25:51.91 And I think that if you have a chance, you might be-- 00:25:53.25\00:25:55.48 I'm not saying that you should go out and sing the song-- 00:25:55.48\00:25:58.89 but at least reflect on some of the major songs 00:25:58.89\00:26:03.96 of our Christian tradition 00:26:04.76\00:26:08.13 that speak about the resurrection, 00:26:08.13\00:26:09.96 and that can bring life and rejoice to you, 00:26:09.96\00:26:13.34 not only about yourself, but sometimes we stop 00:26:13.34\00:26:18.14 and miss beloved ones that are no longer with us, 00:26:18.14\00:26:23.01 that hoped for the second coming, 00:26:23.01\00:26:25.35 but they are resting in Christ. 00:26:25.35\00:26:28.42 This is a hope not only for ourselves, 00:26:28.42\00:26:30.95 but that we will be together with those ones 00:26:30.95\00:26:34.36 when Jesus comes, 00:26:34.36\00:26:36.26 the trumpet sounds--using the language of Paul-- 00:26:36.26\00:26:39.73 and all those come from the grave. There can be 00:26:39.73\00:26:43.73 no most glorious hope like this one. 00:26:43.73\00:26:47.94 >>So that picture that Paul paints, 00:26:49.07\00:26:51.97 that Jesus gives us the ability to experience, 00:26:51.97\00:26:55.04 the opportunity to experience, 00:26:55.04\00:26:57.11 that's the greatest parade that the world has ever seen, 00:26:57.11\00:27:01.48 that day when Christ comes back 00:27:01.48\00:27:02.85 and brings the dead in Christ, in Him, back to life again, 00:27:02.85\00:27:07.42 and they begin that incredible journey to heaven. 00:27:07.42\00:27:09.42 That's something that Jesus desires you to experience. 00:27:09.42\00:27:12.53 It's something He desires me to experience. 00:27:12.53\00:27:14.60 Every single one of us, He wants us to experience that, 00:27:14.60\00:27:17.77 and He makes it possible. 00:27:17.77\00:27:19.20 So what remains is for you and me to decide 00:27:19.20\00:27:22.27 whether or not we want to be a part of that great parade. 00:27:22.27\00:27:25.41 And I hope 00:27:25.41\00:27:26.78 that you have decided you want to be a part of it. 00:27:26.78\00:27:29.34 We are looking at "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:27:29.34\00:27:34.22 We're about halfway through, exactly halfway through. 00:27:34.22\00:27:37.82 That means we've got halfway to go, 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.72 and you don't wanna miss a single lesson. 00:27:39.72\00:27:42.26 So we look forward to seeing you next week 00:27:42.26\00:27:44.36 as we continue our journey 00:27:44.36\00:27:45.66 through this incredible subject here on "Sabbath School," 00:27:45.66\00:27:48.33 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:48.33\00:27:50.80 (uplifting theme music) 00:27:50.80\00:27:54.20 (music ends) 00:28:27.10\00:28:28.97
