(inspirational theme music) 00:00:00.80\00:00:03.40 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.61\00:00:14.94 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.94\00:00:17.58 We're delighted to have you back again 00:00:17.58\00:00:19.48 for lesson number six. 00:00:19.48\00:00:22.08 We are taking a look this week at "He Died for Us," 00:00:22.08\00:00:25.32 a very significant subject as we continue our journey 00:00:25.32\00:00:28.89 through the subject of "Death, Dying and the Future Hope." 00:00:28.89\00:00:32.33 Our guest with us again this week is the author 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.83 of the Sabbath school lesson, Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:00:34.83\00:00:37.70 He's an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.84 Alberto, welcome back. 00:00:40.84\00:00:42.50 >>It's a honor to be with you during this series. 00:00:42.50\00:00:46.54 >>So we are moving our way through it, 00:00:46.54\00:00:48.68 learning new things each time that we come together. 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.51 And I wanted to make reference 00:00:51.51\00:00:55.38 as we begin this week to something that you describe, 00:00:55.38\00:00:59.05 a story that you tell in the companion book 00:00:59.05\00:01:02.16 to the Sabbath school lesson. 00:01:02.16\00:01:03.89 You talk about a lecture that a Swiss theologian 00:01:03.89\00:01:07.83 by the name of Oscar Cullmann presented 00:01:07.83\00:01:10.17 at Harvard University. 00:01:10.17\00:01:11.83 He was talking about the immortality of the soul 00:01:11.83\00:01:14.60 and the resurrection. 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.10 Can you expound on this story just a little bit? 00:01:16.10\00:01:18.47 Because it's a fascinating story. 00:01:18.47\00:01:20.54 >>Actually, Oscar Cullmann--and I have a copy 00:01:21.78\00:01:24.48 of the book here, 00:01:24.48\00:01:26.68 the book form; they published it in the "Harvard Review" 00:01:26.68\00:01:31.69 and also elsewhere. There are several additions to it, 00:01:31.69\00:01:35.86 but he starts his book in a--or his lecture, at that time-- 00:01:35.86\00:01:39.13 and it's the beginning of his book also-- 00:01:39.13\00:01:42.20 contrasting the death of Christ 00:01:42.20\00:01:46.60 and Socrates. 00:01:46.60\00:01:48.20 And here you'll find in his view 00:01:49.20\00:01:52.61 probably the best way to understand the contrast 00:01:52.61\00:01:56.41 between Greek philosophy and the anthropology 00:01:56.41\00:02:01.12 of Greek philosophy, how they understand a human being, 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.35 and that is this contrast between the two. 00:02:04.35\00:02:08.36 When Socrates was to be, 00:02:09.22\00:02:13.43 to drink the poison that he did to die, 00:02:13.43\00:02:18.47 he did in a very peaceful 00:02:19.27\00:02:22.34 and serene way, because, for him, 00:02:22.34\00:02:26.24 that was actually a friend to be welcomed 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.45 and not a enemy 00:02:30.45\00:02:32.08 because for the philosophers, including Socrates, 00:02:32.08\00:02:35.42 they thought that the body was just the prison of the soul. 00:02:36.79\00:02:41.36 And he, as a philosopher, would really go to paradise 00:02:42.72\00:02:45.93 or whatever, to a upper stage of life. 00:02:45.93\00:02:49.53 So he drunk it in a very peaceful way 00:02:49.53\00:02:52.40 because that would liberate the soul, 00:02:52.40\00:02:56.00 give the soul freedom to go to that world of the ideas, 00:02:56.00\00:03:00.98 away from the prison of his body. 00:03:02.01\00:03:04.41 But for Jesus, that was not a friend to be welcomed, 00:03:04.41\00:03:09.32 was actually a enemy, the last enemy to be conquered. 00:03:09.32\00:03:14.39 And Jesus, really, in Gethsemane, 00:03:15.46\00:03:18.56 He even said, 00:03:19.39\00:03:20.36 "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, 00:03:20.36\00:03:25.03 even to [the] death," because He was in agony. 00:03:25.03\00:03:29.00 What a contrast between the two models. 00:03:29.00\00:03:32.61 But in reality, Jesus conquered death, 00:03:32.61\00:03:36.48 and this is the good news that we have. 00:03:36.48\00:03:39.51 But let me just add a point. 00:03:39.51\00:03:42.02 Oscar Cullmann, in his lecture, made it very clear 00:03:42.02\00:03:46.99 that there is no way to harmonize the philosophical, 00:03:46.99\00:03:51.83 the Greek philosophical concept of the immortal soul 00:03:51.83\00:03:56.53 with the New Testament teaching 00:03:56.53\00:03:58.60 of the resurrection of the body. 00:03:58.60\00:04:02.00 Either the soul is immortal, 00:04:02.00\00:04:05.61 and there is no resurrection, 00:04:05.61\00:04:07.91 or there is a bodily resurrection, 00:04:07.91\00:04:10.91 and the soul is not immortal. And from his perspective, 00:04:10.91\00:04:14.88 the New Testament teaches, really, the resurrection 00:04:14.88\00:04:18.22 of the body as the hope for the Christian, 00:04:18.22\00:04:22.96 the Christian hope, and not natural immortality of the soul 00:04:22.96\00:04:26.86 as the Greek philosophers taught. 00:04:26.86\00:04:29.90 >>So, very, very insightful story, 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.23 and the conclusion that he comes to, I think, 00:04:32.23\00:04:35.54 is a very positive one, a very biblical one. 00:04:35.54\00:04:38.97 I wanna go back to build on something that we looked at 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.38 a few weeks ago, and we looked at death occurring 00:04:42.38\00:04:46.92 in the Old Testament and the significance of it. 00:04:46.92\00:04:51.02 What about some of those sacrifices 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.89 that took place in the Old Testament? 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.32 We looked back at Genesis 3:15 a few weeks ago, 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.73 how the the serpent's head would be wounded 00:04:59.73\00:05:01.80 and the Seed of the woman's heel would be wounded, 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.50 at that "protoevangelium," as it's sometimes called, 00:05:04.50\00:05:07.44 that first glimpse at Jesus the Messiah 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.14 and the plan of salvation. 00:05:10.14\00:05:11.97 How did sacrifices in the Old Testament 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.61 foreshadow Christ's death on the cross? 00:05:14.61\00:05:18.25 How are those two linked together? 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.15 >>Many people are afraid or do not like very much 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.22 the references to the, in the Old Testament, 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.82 to animal sacrifices because they say, 00:05:26.82\00:05:30.56 "Well, there is too much blood in the Old Testament, 00:05:30.56\00:05:34.20 "and I prefer the New Testament, is more love 00:05:34.20\00:05:37.20 and not so much justice as in the Old Testament." 00:05:37.20\00:05:40.90 But remember, each one of the human beings 00:05:40.90\00:05:44.77 since the fall of Adam and Eve had really 00:05:44.77\00:05:49.28 a death sentence on them, 00:05:49.28\00:05:53.52 and in this case, they should die, 00:05:53.52\00:05:56.79 but God's mercy allowed an animal to die 00:05:56.79\00:06:01.72 in place of human beings. 00:06:01.72\00:06:03.76 So, every single sacrifice, bodily sacrifice, 00:06:03.76\00:06:08.33 offered according to God's plan, 00:06:08.33\00:06:10.50 because there were pagan sacrifices also that did not 00:06:10.50\00:06:14.64 count, but the ones that follow the biblical pattern 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.94 established by God, they foreshadowed 00:06:16.94\00:06:20.91 the Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world. 00:06:20.91\00:06:25.98 But let me just add another point. 00:06:27.08\00:06:28.72 Some people say, as I told you, 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.92 that the Old Testament is just based on justice, 00:06:30.92\00:06:35.06 and the New Testament--or judgment-- 00:06:35.06\00:06:38.36 and the New Testament in love and mercy. 00:06:38.36\00:06:41.23 But the Apostle Paul in Romans, chapter 3 00:06:41.23\00:06:44.93 says exactly the opposite. 00:06:44.93\00:06:48.00 In the Old Testament, God was very merciful, 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.61 but the fullness of God's justice was revealed 00:06:51.61\00:06:55.91 not through the sacrifices of the Old Testament, 00:06:55.91\00:07:00.52 as many as they were, but in the cross where Jesus died 00:07:00.52\00:07:05.49 as the Lamb of God, 00:07:05.49\00:07:08.52 not for His own sake, but for all human beings. 00:07:08.52\00:07:13.60 So His sacrifice is available to all, 00:07:14.66\00:07:18.00 for those who will accept it and be saved, 00:07:18.00\00:07:20.77 but is available even to those who will be punished 00:07:20.77\00:07:24.54 and they will be that who do not accept Christ 00:07:24.54\00:07:27.98 as the Lamb of God. 00:07:27.98\00:07:29.71 >>You make an important point here 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.35 that that salvation is available to everybody, 00:07:31.35\00:07:35.32 and those who receive it, those who accept it by faith, 00:07:35.32\00:07:38.52 are gonna be ones who receive it. 00:07:38.52\00:07:40.86 The memory text for this week is, 00:07:40.86\00:07:43.43 I think, a significant one. 00:07:43.43\00:07:44.73 In John, chapter 3, verses 14 and 15, it says, 00:07:44.73\00:07:48.66 "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.83 "even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.80 "that whoever believes in Him should not perish 00:07:54.80\00:07:58.07 but have [everlasting] life." 00:07:58.07\00:08:00.04 And then, of course, the following verse is John 3:16, 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.34 probably the most frequently quoted verse in the Bible. 00:08:02.34\00:08:05.01 What about that serpent that was lifted up by Moses 00:08:05.01\00:08:08.78 in the wilderness? How did that give us a picture of Jesus? 00:08:08.78\00:08:12.45 And what significance, what are the parallels there? 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.96 >>Actually the serpent is a... 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.56 is a symbol of sin, of evil. 00:08:19.63\00:08:23.47 And that, you remember that when there was 00:08:23.47\00:08:26.87 that kind of plague there in the wilderness, 00:08:26.87\00:08:29.94 and many people were dying with a serpent, 00:08:29.94\00:08:33.24 God asked Moses to make a serpent there of bronze, 00:08:33.24\00:08:37.71 of metal there, and looking to it, they would have-- 00:08:37.71\00:08:41.98 they would be healed. 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.85 It's interesting that this symbol is the, 00:08:43.85\00:08:48.06 is a way of illustrating 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.29 that Jesus would take our plan, 00:08:51.29\00:08:56.26 our sins, not that He became sinful, 00:08:56.26\00:09:01.20 as such, but He took over Him our sins. 00:09:01.20\00:09:05.31 And that is a remarkable illustration 00:09:05.31\00:09:08.58 of what Christ did for us. And there is another passage 00:09:08.58\00:09:12.91 in John, chapter 12, where He says, 00:09:12.91\00:09:16.92 "And when I will be lifted up from the earth, 00:09:16.92\00:09:21.06 I will draw all to me," or attract. And in the book 00:09:21.06\00:09:26.06 "Steps to Christ" by Ellen White, 00:09:26.06\00:09:28.36 and I like very much that statement 00:09:28.36\00:09:31.30 where she expands a little bit on this expression. 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.77 She says...that to the sinner, 00:09:34.77\00:09:39.84 all that it takes is a glimpse of the cross, 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.55 and he, "if he does not resist he will be drawn... 00:09:44.55\00:09:49.28 [in repentance at] the foot of the cross." 00:09:49.28\00:09:53.46 So, in other words, is not I that go 00:09:53.46\00:09:58.03 to the cross begging for forgiveness and salvation, 00:09:58.03\00:10:02.40 saying, "Lord, please, maybe You can have, give me a chance," 00:10:02.40\00:10:06.87 something like that. 00:10:06.87\00:10:08.10 No. He takes the initiative, and the cross has 00:10:08.10\00:10:11.47 that kind of attraction drawing us, to us, 00:10:11.47\00:10:15.71 and if we don't resist, God's mercy will transform us. 00:10:15.71\00:10:19.91 And this is the beauty of this symbol. 00:10:19.91\00:10:23.49 >>Thanks for clarifying that. 00:10:23.49\00:10:25.15 It makes a whole lot more sense. 00:10:25.15\00:10:26.92 I want to read another verse now 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.32 and give you an opportunity to respond to it. 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.46 We've been talking about sacrifices in the Old Testament, 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.90 and yet in Hebrews, chapter 10, verse number 4 00:10:35.90\00:10:39.30 is a very fascinating statement. 00:10:39.30\00:10:40.77 Hebrews 10:4 says, "For it is not possible 00:10:40.77\00:10:43.94 that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins." 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.91 So if the blood of bulls and goats, 00:10:50.11\00:10:51.58 all the sacrifices, doesn't take away the sin, 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.31 then what's the point of all the sacrifices? 00:10:53.31\00:10:56.52 >>Yeah, and you could even add to your question, Eric, 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.55 the idea that even Moses, Enoch, and Elijah 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.93 were in heaven already. And in this case, well, 00:11:03.93\00:11:08.86 there are many ways of understanding it, but I prefer 00:11:08.86\00:11:13.44 the, to compare it with a credit card. 00:11:13.44\00:11:16.37 The credit card, you make a actual payment with it. 00:11:17.77\00:11:21.74 And so, the person, the store or whoever or in the internet, 00:11:21.74\00:11:26.35 they receive the payment for it, but actually, 00:11:26.35\00:11:29.32 the payment becomes effective under the condition 00:11:29.32\00:11:32.82 that later on that I pay my credit card bill. 00:11:32.82\00:11:36.56 If I don't pay, then it's a disaster. 00:11:36.56\00:11:39.66 In this case, people in the Old Testament, including Moses 00:11:39.66\00:11:43.77 and Enoch and Elijah, they were actually saved, 00:11:43.77\00:11:48.70 but salvation in the Old Testament, 00:11:48.70\00:11:51.64 although it was complete and effective, 00:11:51.64\00:11:56.41 so it was not something that was, "Well, 00:11:56.41\00:11:59.38 let's say we pretend." No, it was effective, 00:11:59.38\00:12:02.02 but it was dependent on the payment 00:12:02.02\00:12:05.62 of the price for God's justice 00:12:05.62\00:12:09.22 offered that Friday on the cross of Calvary. 00:12:09.22\00:12:13.76 >>And by the grace of God, 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.10 He made that payment, and He made the payment in full. 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.43 And He continues to be there to minister to us 00:12:18.43\00:12:21.84 and to encourage us in the life that we live. 00:12:21.84\00:12:24.64 And we look at the world that we live in right now, 00:12:24.64\00:12:26.74 and it's got a lot of pain. 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.31 it's got a lot of sorrow, and unfortunately, 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.45 it's got a lot of death, dying, and sometimes 00:12:30.45\00:12:33.21 not a lot of future hope, 00:12:33.21\00:12:34.28 or at least not for a lot of people. 00:12:34.28\00:12:35.92 But this quarter is all about that. 00:12:35.92\00:12:37.62 It's about the future hope and understanding the hope 00:12:37.62\00:12:39.92 that we do have when it involves death and dying. 00:12:39.92\00:12:44.19 If you've been enjoying this quarter's lessons, 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.56 and we're making our way through the quarter. 00:12:46.56\00:12:48.73 We're about halfway through, 00:12:48.73\00:12:50.23 maybe not quite halfway through right now, 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.63 but if you want to dig into it more 00:12:52.63\00:12:55.20 and get more out of it and understand it better, 00:12:55.20\00:12:57.61 I wanna encourage you to pick up the companion book 00:12:57.61\00:13:00.11 to this quarter's lesson. 00:13:00.11\00:13:01.51 It's called "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope" 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.28 by author Alberto Timm. 00:13:04.28\00:13:05.65 He, of course, is our guest here each week 00:13:05.65\00:13:07.95 on "Sabbath School." 00:13:07.95\00:13:09.25 And he goes into more detail, gives additional insight 00:13:09.25\00:13:12.82 into the subjects that we are looking at 00:13:12.82\00:13:15.89 during the course of this quarter during these 14 lessons. 00:13:15.89\00:13:19.43 So if you wanna understand it better, 00:13:19.43\00:13:20.83 or if you know someone else who has a misunderstanding, 00:13:20.83\00:13:24.33 of this subject and you want to help them see more clearly 00:13:24.33\00:13:28.24 the hope that there is in Jesus, 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.31 I wanna encourage you to pick that book up. 00:13:30.31\00:13:32.04 You'll find it at itiswritten.shop. 00:13:32.04\00:13:35.21 Again, it's called "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:35.21\00:13:38.71 We'll be back in just a moment as we continue our study. 00:13:38.71\00:13:41.85 See you in just a moment. 00:13:41.85\00:13:42.98 (inspirational theme music) 00:13:42.98\00:13:45.69 >>Join me on "It Is Written" 00:13:47.39\00:13:49.36 for one of the great chapters of the Bible, 00:13:49.36\00:13:52.49 Isaiah, chapter 53. 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.13 Isaiah has been called the gospel prophet 00:13:55.13\00:13:57.27 because how he repeatedly brings Jesus to light 00:13:57.27\00:14:00.20 throughout the book of Isaiah. 00:14:00.20\00:14:02.27 And there's no chapter in the book of Isaiah 00:14:02.27\00:14:04.17 where he does that more than Isaiah, chapter 53. 00:14:04.17\00:14:07.91 Isaiah 53 has been quoted 00:14:07.91\00:14:09.81 in the New Testament numerous times. 00:14:09.81\00:14:12.18 And you see why when you study God's Word 00:14:12.18\00:14:15.05 and focus on Isaiah, chapter 53. 00:14:15.05\00:14:17.99 It's about Jesus Christ, crucified, 00:14:17.99\00:14:21.32 the One who died for the sins of the world, 00:14:21.32\00:14:23.46 the Jesus that you and I know is coming back 00:14:23.46\00:14:26.59 to this world to take us home. 00:14:26.59\00:14:28.86 Don't miss 00:14:28.86\00:14:30.17 "Great Chapters of the Bible: Isaiah [Chapter] 53." 00:14:30.17\00:14:34.44 You will be moved, you'll be blessed, 00:14:34.44\00:14:36.97 and you will be encouraged in faith in God. 00:14:36.97\00:14:41.04 "Great Chapters of the Bible: Isaiah 53," 00:14:41.04\00:14:44.18 watch now on It Is Written TV. 00:14:44.18\00:14:46.95 (inspirational theme music) 00:14:48.32\00:14:51.55 >>Welcome back to "Sabbath School," 00:14:52.69\00:14:54.06 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:14:54.06\00:14:55.96 We are taking a look at Christ's death for us this week. 00:14:55.96\00:15:00.30 And, Alberto, I wanna, I wanna drill down on something 00:15:00.30\00:15:04.13 or look into something. 00:15:04.13\00:15:05.83 The Bible talks about the cross as an altar. 00:15:05.83\00:15:09.80 How is the cross an altar? What is the significance of that, 00:15:09.80\00:15:13.41 and what type of an altar does it represent? 00:15:13.41\00:15:16.08 >>Actually, this is a... 00:15:17.68\00:15:20.15 a typological expression, 00:15:20.15\00:15:23.69 or, in other words, you have the types or symbols 00:15:23.69\00:15:27.06 of the Old Testament. 00:15:27.06\00:15:28.96 Sacrifices during Old Testament times were offered 00:15:28.96\00:15:33.23 on altars made of stones. 00:15:33.23\00:15:36.13 And so the animal was put over there as a sacrifice. 00:15:36.13\00:15:39.63 And probably the most meaningful sacrifice 00:15:39.63\00:15:42.87 of the Old Testament was the animal that was offered 00:15:42.87\00:15:47.94 replacing Isaac when Abraham went to the, 00:15:49.08\00:15:53.11 to fulfill God's requirements over there. So he, 00:15:54.32\00:15:57.99 Isaac, should be offered as a sacrifice, 00:15:59.12\00:16:02.02 but then God Himself provided a substitute, 00:16:02.02\00:16:05.93 another animal, to be offered over there. 00:16:05.93\00:16:08.80 So this idea of substitution is very meaningful 00:16:08.80\00:16:13.27 in regard to the sacrifices. And at the cross, 00:16:13.27\00:16:17.87 Christ offered Himself in our place. 00:16:17.87\00:16:22.41 But some people struggle about who offered Him. 00:16:22.41\00:16:26.88 Were the Roman soldiers who really nailed Him to the cross? 00:16:26.88\00:16:31.95 Also, at the cross 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.39 Christ was not only a sacrifice; but He was a priest. 00:16:35.39\00:16:40.46 He offered Himself for our sins. 00:16:41.23\00:16:44.93 So, it's interesting, this combination, 00:16:44.93\00:16:47.30 because usually in the Old Testament--usually, not always-- 00:16:47.30\00:16:50.47 in the Old Testament, the priest offered another sacrifice, 00:16:50.47\00:16:54.44 never himself or herself, himself, better saying. 00:16:54.44\00:16:58.68 But in this case, 00:16:58.68\00:17:00.08 you will see immediately that Jesus is both of them. 00:17:00.08\00:17:05.15 And so, a Priest offering Himself-- 00:17:06.25\00:17:09.86 and this is unique--in fulfillment of all the 00:17:09.86\00:17:14.36 sacrifices to the, of the Old Testament, 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.70 as a sacrifice of love for all humanity. 00:17:16.70\00:17:21.77 >>A beautiful picture of Christ's love for us 00:17:22.87\00:17:23.97 and His willingness to sacrifice Himself. 00:17:23.97\00:17:27.41 Now, on Tuesday's lesson, it's a short title of the lesson. 00:17:27.41\00:17:31.81 In fact, it's just three words, 00:17:31.81\00:17:33.11 but there's a lot of meaning in those three words. 00:17:33.11\00:17:36.42 It's a quote 00:17:36.42\00:17:37.52 from John, chapter 19, verse number 30, 00:17:37.52\00:17:41.72 which says, "It is finished!" 00:17:41.72\00:17:43.89 Okay, so the question is, 00:17:44.79\00:17:46.59 when Jesus died on the cross, what was finished? 00:17:46.59\00:17:51.30 And I guess, as an extension question, what wasn't finished? 00:17:51.30\00:17:55.80 What was accomplished on the cross, 00:17:55.80\00:17:58.41 and what still, if everything is finished--well, 00:17:58.41\00:18:01.91 let me put it this way: 00:18:01.91\00:18:02.94 If everything is finished on the cross, 00:18:02.94\00:18:03.95 why are we still here? 00:18:03.95\00:18:05.08 Maybe that's another way of asking the question. 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.15 Explain "It is finished." 00:18:07.15\00:18:08.88 >>Actually, this is a very meaningful statement. 00:18:10.22\00:18:13.96 You have heard about this 00:18:13.96\00:18:15.42 that there are seven statements Jesus made from the cross, 00:18:15.42\00:18:20.50 but probably this was the most meaningful, 00:18:21.56\00:18:22.83 the most significant. 00:18:22.83\00:18:25.20 I like the expression that Ellen White uses, that 00:18:25.20\00:18:29.97 the life of Jesus was a preface 00:18:29.97\00:18:34.11 to His death on the cross. 00:18:34.11\00:18:38.05 And there is a old Bible commentator, 00:18:38.05\00:18:42.92 Plumber, his name, that says that what hold Jesus 00:18:42.92\00:18:46.62 on the cross were not the nails, 00:18:46.62\00:18:50.46 but His willingness to save us, as His enemies, even. 00:18:50.46\00:18:55.40 So He died for His enemies because He want to save it. 00:18:55.40\00:18:59.87 But when it came to the crucial moment--"It is finished"-- 00:18:59.87\00:19:02.97 I think it had a...it's a broad concept 00:19:02.97\00:19:07.44 that meant that His struggles with the powers of evil 00:19:07.44\00:19:12.51 that He faced throughout His life, came to a end, 00:19:13.65\00:19:16.58 but, much more than this, it really meant 00:19:17.69\00:19:22.29 Christ's triumph over the powers of evil, 00:19:22.29\00:19:26.36 over Satan. 00:19:26.36\00:19:27.96 So the plan of salvation 00:19:27.96\00:19:30.03 was really in place and triumphed. 00:19:30.03\00:19:35.00 That's the word of victory, 00:19:35.00\00:19:37.87 of Jesus over the powers of evil. 00:19:37.87\00:19:41.71 So that, as a sacrifice, it was complete. 00:19:41.71\00:19:46.45 "Where sin abounded"--using the language of Paul-- 00:19:46.45\00:19:50.69 grace was much more overflowed at the world 00:19:50.69\00:19:54.99 with the grace of Christ. But remember, 00:19:54.99\00:19:58.33 it was finished as the plan of salvation. 00:19:59.39\00:20:02.43 And I like very much what Paul says, for instance, 00:20:02.43\00:20:06.87 in 2 Corinthians, 00:20:06.87\00:20:10.27 chapter 5, verses 18 on. 00:20:10.27\00:20:14.98 He says that God was in Christ reconciling 00:20:14.98\00:20:19.71 with Him the world. But now comes our part, 00:20:19.71\00:20:24.65 and Paul is begging, "Please, 00:20:25.45\00:20:27.89 you should also reconcile yourself with God." 00:20:27.89\00:20:31.73 So that salvation is available to everybody. 00:20:31.73\00:20:36.06 But Jesus, His priesthood in the heavenly sanctuary, 00:20:36.06\00:20:40.00 according to the book of Hebrews and other Bible passages, 00:20:40.00\00:20:43.27 is the place where Jesus offers salvation for us today. 00:20:43.27\00:20:48.24 So, the payment for sin 00:20:49.44\00:20:53.35 was complete for God's justice, 00:20:53.35\00:20:56.52 but it needs to be completed in my life also. 00:20:56.52\00:21:00.22 And there is a reason why Paul says 00:21:00.22\00:21:02.92 in Hebrews 4, 00:21:02.92\00:21:06.59 verses 14-16, that if you are in need, 00:21:06.59\00:21:09.60 you should go to the throne of grace. 00:21:09.60\00:21:12.83 Where grace i, is yet a throne of mercy, 00:21:12.83\00:21:16.27 where grace is available to you. And... 00:21:16.27\00:21:20.64 But, although the hosts of evil 00:21:20.64\00:21:25.45 receive their sentence at the cross, 00:21:25.45\00:21:29.45 they still exist, and evil is still in our world. 00:21:30.79\00:21:35.46 They have no right to exist, but they exist. 00:21:36.59\00:21:39.03 And so, God is leading human history to the final triumph. 00:21:39.03\00:21:44.07 So that sentence to the hosts of evil is there, 00:21:45.30\00:21:48.94 but it will be executed 00:21:48.94\00:21:50.81 at the end of the millennium, 00:21:50.81\00:21:52.31 according to Gen--to the book of Revelation, 00:21:52.31\00:21:57.05 and you have there 00:21:57.05\00:21:59.35 chapters 20 and then 21 as well. 00:21:59.35\00:22:04.12 So we still need to have the ceasing 00:22:04.12\00:22:08.49 of evil and all the wicked of this world. 00:22:08.49\00:22:13.56 >>So the cross really is central to the plan of salvation. 00:22:14.83\00:22:18.30 The plan of salvation doesn't happen without it. 00:22:18.30\00:22:20.84 In Revelation, there's this picture-- 00:22:20.84\00:22:23.87 and you mentioned Revelation just a moment ago-- 00:22:23.87\00:22:26.14 there's this picture of the heavenly host rejoicing 00:22:26.14\00:22:28.71 in "the Lamb that was slain." 00:22:28.71\00:22:31.35 It...doesn't sound like anything to rejoice in, 00:22:31.35\00:22:34.62 from a certain perspective, 00:22:34.62\00:22:35.78 and yet from a different perspective, 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.42 there's a great deal to rejoice in. 00:22:37.42\00:22:39.49 >>Actually, the cross is the greatest contrast 00:22:40.59\00:22:43.86 of the universe, in my understanding, 00:22:43.86\00:22:47.20 because the infinite love of God 00:22:47.20\00:22:52.23 and the selfishness of Satan 00:22:53.13\00:22:56.00 is the first time that they met face to face. 00:22:56.00\00:23:00.31 There is no other such a sharp contrast, 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.38 such meaningful as the cross. 00:23:03.38\00:23:05.88 And actually, the question that you could ask is, 00:23:05.88\00:23:10.62 was the cross an act of God or of Satan? 00:23:10.62\00:23:15.39 Well, before answering a tricky question, 00:23:16.46\00:23:19.26 you have first to rephrase the question. 00:23:19.26\00:23:21.83 Actually, it's not either-or. 00:23:21.83\00:23:23.67 It was the act of God, because the Bible is clear, 00:23:23.67\00:23:26.94 saying that God gave His Son for us. 00:23:26.94\00:23:30.64 So, Christ's willingness, 00:23:30.64\00:23:34.51 He offered Himself for us. But at the same time, 00:23:34.51\00:23:38.28 Satan observed Him in pain and suffering. 00:23:38.28\00:23:42.45 And by doing so, he actually, 00:23:42.45\00:23:47.12 that was a decree of his own death sentence. 00:23:47.12\00:23:51.63 So the cross is a action of both of them. 00:23:51.63\00:23:55.76 That is the victory. There was during Christ's ministry 00:23:55.76\00:24:00.57 a struggle between good and evil, the forces. 00:24:00.57\00:24:03.41 Jesus, actually, in His ministry, 00:24:03.41\00:24:05.74 was a continuous struggle against the powers of evil, 00:24:05.74\00:24:10.38 either in a spiritual sense 00:24:10.38\00:24:13.31 or even evil using, Satan using human beings. 00:24:13.31\00:24:17.79 And the most tragic thing in my understanding is that 00:24:17.79\00:24:22.02 he used even the priesthood at that time. 00:24:22.02\00:24:25.89 The high priest that was supposed to minister 00:24:25.89\00:24:30.73 as a representative, as a type of Christ, 00:24:30.73\00:24:33.80 he was the main one used by Satan. 00:24:33.80\00:24:37.24 And now, at this point, Jesus really triumphed. 00:24:37.24\00:24:41.78 And that was really--the cross of Christ 00:24:41.78\00:24:44.61 is what avoids rebellion to come 00:24:44.61\00:24:48.38 into the universe again, because sin 00:24:48.38\00:24:52.35 is not worthy to be followed or to fall into sin. 00:24:52.35\00:24:57.19 And so it will be like a "vaccine" 00:24:57.19\00:25:00.93 against another rebellion in the universe. 00:25:00.93\00:25:03.90 And no wonder that the whole hosts of heaven 00:25:03.90\00:25:08.20 in the book of Revelation, like, the angelical beings, 00:25:08.20\00:25:11.34 the great multitudes, the creatures, and so on, 00:25:11.34\00:25:15.58 they are rejoicing on the victory that the Lamb 00:25:15.58\00:25:19.35 was able to get at the cross. 00:25:19.35\00:25:24.42 Actually, at the cross, the whole future 00:25:25.42\00:25:29.26 of humanity and of the universe was at stake. 00:25:29.26\00:25:34.30 Had Jesus failed, that was, that would be the disaster 00:25:35.66\00:25:38.17 of humanity. 00:25:38.17\00:25:41.47 But praise the Lord, that was not the case. 00:25:41.47\00:25:43.71 So we cannot speak, 00:25:43.71\00:25:45.61 we should never speak about if it would not take place 00:25:45.61\00:25:49.61 because it actually took place, 00:25:49.61\00:25:51.55 and that was a major victory. 00:25:51.55\00:25:53.98 >>So, looking back, we see that it did take place. 00:25:55.35\00:25:57.15 We should be grateful that it did. 00:25:57.15\00:25:59.25 Conceptually, we've got an understanding of 00:25:59.25\00:26:01.16 what took place and its ramifications, 00:26:01.16\00:26:03.76 its meaning to what's going on in the world. 00:26:03.76\00:26:07.46 What about to us personally? 00:26:07.46\00:26:08.90 What's the significance of the cross to me, 00:26:08.90\00:26:11.80 to you, personally? 00:26:11.80\00:26:13.23 >>Only at the foot of the cross we can get salvation. 00:26:14.60\00:26:17.67 God has no alternative plan of salvation. 00:26:17.67\00:26:21.48 Only by accepting Christ, 00:26:21.48\00:26:23.35 the sacrifice for us in our place, is that 00:26:23.35\00:26:28.22 we can really have assurance of salvation. 00:26:28.22\00:26:31.95 No wonder that even Paul 00:26:31.95\00:26:34.66 in Galatians 6:14 says, 00:26:34.66\00:26:38.69 "That I"--"God forbid that I [would] boast 00:26:38.69\00:26:41.93 [in anything else] except [for] the cross of...Christ," 00:26:41.93\00:26:46.50 where Christ died for me, and I died for Him, 00:26:46.50\00:26:51.24 not in the thing of paying anything but in the sense 00:26:51.24\00:26:53.88 of dying for this world and living in harmony 00:26:53.88\00:26:57.38 with God's will. So, this is our only assurance 00:26:57.38\00:27:01.88 in this world, and our hope, 00:27:01.88\00:27:04.45 assurance in the present and hope for the future. 00:27:04.45\00:27:07.96 >>Alberto, thank you for helping to unpack 00:27:09.06\00:27:11.49 this particular week's lesson, "He Died for Us," 00:27:11.49\00:27:14.60 a very significant subject 00:27:14.60\00:27:16.23 as we're going through this study this quarter 00:27:16.23\00:27:19.93 on "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:27:19.93\00:27:22.10 because without the cross there really is no future hope. 00:27:22.10\00:27:25.61 But with the cross, there is hope for everybody. 00:27:25.61\00:27:29.84 The truth is Jesus died for you. 00:27:29.84\00:27:32.18 The question is, will you receive His death on your 00:27:32.18\00:27:35.85 behalf? And I hope that the answer is yes. 00:27:35.85\00:27:37.82 We're gonna be back again next week as we continue 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.75 looking at this fascinating subject, 00:27:39.75\00:27:41.36 delving into it more deeply, 00:27:41.36\00:27:43.53 answering common questions, and getting 00:27:43.53\00:27:45.26 a clearer picture of Jesus and His plan for your life. 00:27:45.26\00:27:48.36 We look forward to seeing you again next week 00:27:48.36\00:27:50.30 on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:50.30\00:27:53.30 God bless you.
