(upbeat theme music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:02.83 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.34\00:00:14.74 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.74\00:00:16.75 We're delighted to have you back again 00:00:16.75\00:00:19.28 for week number five of our journey. 00:00:19.28\00:00:22.72 We are looking at the subject of "Death, Dying, 00:00:22.72\00:00:25.15 and the Future Hope." 00:00:25.15\00:00:26.72 And with us again today, we have the author 00:00:26.72\00:00:29.49 of the Sabbath school study, and that is Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:00:29.49\00:00:32.69 He is an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:32.69\00:00:35.96 Alberto, welcome back once again. 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.57 >>Well, it's my pleasure to join you. 00:00:38.57\00:00:41.24 >>So we're already on a journey; we're making our way 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.77 through this quarter looking at a very significant subject. 00:00:43.77\00:00:47.28 And the last study that we did, last week's lesson 00:00:47.28\00:00:51.01 dealt with the hope that there is, 00:00:51.01\00:00:52.58 or was, in the Old Testament 00:00:52.58\00:00:54.35 really being found in the body's resurrection. 00:00:54.35\00:00:57.09 Why did they place their hope in that? 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.42 And is that still where we should be placing our hope? 00:00:59.42\00:01:03.36 >>Definitely. That's a... 00:01:04.93\00:01:07.30 ongoing process. 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.47 Let me just illustrate it. 00:01:11.50\00:01:13.30 The second time that I went to Machu Picchu-- 00:01:14.44\00:01:16.97 and this was with my wife, now-- 00:01:17.94\00:01:20.71 we went up there after the bus took us to the right place 00:01:20.71\00:01:24.91 and then we had to walk up to the hill. 00:01:24.91\00:01:28.32 And it was a very foggy day. 00:01:28.32\00:01:31.55 And then I asked the tour guy 00:01:31.55\00:01:35.19 about the weather, 00:01:35.19\00:01:37.53 and I told him, "I think it's worthless to be here." 00:01:37.53\00:01:42.00 And he said, "No, definitely not. 00:01:42.00\00:01:44.70 Soon you will see it clear"-- 00:01:44.70\00:01:47.50 I mean, the weather would clear up-- 00:01:47.50\00:01:49.40 "and you will see the majesty of the place." 00:01:49.40\00:01:52.14 So, probably he was trying to convince us 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.51 that that was what happened. 00:01:56.51\00:01:59.38 And sure enough, we were there, 00:01:59.38\00:02:02.02 and soon it opened like a theater, the curtain opened, 00:02:02.02\00:02:06.22 and the gorgeous majestic scene was there. 00:02:06.22\00:02:10.13 And I think the same thing you have 00:02:10.13\00:02:11.69 with the hope of the resurrection. 00:02:11.69\00:02:14.10 You start early here, one statement in the Old Testament, 00:02:14.10\00:02:19.07 another quotation there, and so on. 00:02:19.07\00:02:22.17 But finally you have not only theory, 00:02:22.17\00:02:26.34 you have actual examples 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.61 of resurrections in both the Old Testament 00:02:29.61\00:02:33.98 and several in the New Testament. 00:02:33.98\00:02:37.12 >>So, this concept of the resurrection, 00:02:37.12\00:02:40.19 a very significant one, a very powerful one, 00:02:40.19\00:02:44.73 and as we're looking here, this particular week 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.40 is called "Resurrections Before the Cross." 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.43 Why is it that people have a hard time 00:02:49.43\00:02:54.07 accepting this teaching, accepting this truth of the 00:02:54.07\00:02:57.94 Bible? What is it that's--what's the blockage? 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.64 What's the hurdle that causes many people 00:03:00.64\00:03:04.68 to stumble with this? 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.38 >>Basically, that is a matter of presuppositions, 00:03:07.72\00:03:11.05 the way how I read the Bible. 00:03:11.05\00:03:13.42 If I bring into the Bible my own presuppositions-- 00:03:13.42\00:03:17.39 they can be from philosophy 00:03:17.39\00:03:20.40 or can be from some other kind of cultural element 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.63 or even tradition--I will have difficulties 00:03:23.63\00:03:26.57 to understand the Bible. 00:03:26.57\00:03:28.04 Or in other words, I read the Bible 00:03:28.04\00:03:30.37 through my own glasses of presuppositions. 00:03:30.37\00:03:34.44 And I would like to mention just a few of them. 00:03:34.44\00:03:37.18 For instance, for a skeptical mind 00:03:37.18\00:03:40.78 that does not accept a supernatural element of 00:03:40.78\00:03:45.09 Scripture, there is no way to accept such a matter of 00:03:45.09\00:03:49.29 resurrection. For those who believe in natural immortality 00:03:49.29\00:03:54.03 of the soul, why should the soul that is already in paradise 00:03:54.03\00:03:57.60 rejoicing with the angels and God 00:03:57.60\00:04:00.37 to be reincarnated here to raise from the grave, 00:04:00.37\00:04:04.61 if they are already in paradise? 00:04:04.61\00:04:07.24 And another one definitely is also the matter 00:04:07.24\00:04:11.91 of near-death experiences. 00:04:11.91\00:04:15.58 In this case, if they "prove" 00:04:15.58\00:04:19.75 that when somebody dies, 00:04:19.75\00:04:21.76 does not die but go to a higher level, higher stage of life, 00:04:21.76\00:04:26.70 then a resurrection of coming back to this world 00:04:26.70\00:04:30.17 and be raised again does not make any sense. 00:04:30.17\00:04:33.20 So, these are just a few examples. 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.70 You could add any, some other ones, 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.31 but are always presuppositions read into the Bible 00:04:38.31\00:04:42.28 without allowing the Bible to speak for itself. 00:04:42.28\00:04:46.38 >>And that same approach can cause us problems 00:04:46.38\00:04:48.95 not just in this subject 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.55 but in really any subject that the Bible covers. 00:04:50.55\00:04:53.12 If we come into it with our own presuppositions 00:04:53.12\00:04:55.76 rather than letting Scripture speak to us-- 00:04:55.76\00:04:58.43 or maybe I should say God to speak to us 00:04:58.43\00:05:01.26 through the Scripture--then we can often end up 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.30 with the wrong--at the wrong destination, 00:05:04.30\00:05:07.34 I guess that's one way to put it. 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.50 So, in the Old Testament there are some people who died 00:05:09.50\00:05:14.31 and rose again. 00:05:14.31\00:05:15.68 There are also some people who sort of skipped a step. 00:05:15.68\00:05:20.12 They went straight from living in this sin-cursed world 00:05:20.12\00:05:25.09 to being--the word that we sometimes use is "translated"-- 00:05:25.09\00:05:29.26 they went straight to eternal life. 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.79 Share a little bit about those situations. 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.30 >>Well, let's start from the last one example 00:05:36.60\00:05:39.53 that you mentioned is those who were translated 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.20 without facing death. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.14 We have evidence that Enoch walked so close to God, 00:05:44.14\00:05:48.94 that He decided to take him, and he was taken into heaven. 00:05:48.94\00:05:53.62 And some people might doubt about this. 00:05:53.62\00:05:56.85 Was that the case because he was taken over there? 00:05:56.85\00:06:00.76 Of course you have Hebrews 11:5 that says 00:06:00.76\00:06:05.43 that "Enoch was taken away 00:06:05.43\00:06:10.03 so that he did not see death." 00:06:10.03\00:06:13.13 So the New Testament even confirms the fact 00:06:13.13\00:06:16.40 that Enoch really did not die, 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.04 but he was taken directly to heaven. And another example 00:06:19.04\00:06:22.88 is also you have the case of Elijah. 00:06:22.88\00:06:27.68 And Elijah also, you remember the... 00:06:27.68\00:06:32.65 the incident with the chariot there of fire, 00:06:32.65\00:06:36.22 that he was taken into heaven. 00:06:36.22\00:06:38.49 And we have evidence also of he appearing 00:06:38.49\00:06:41.73 in the transfiguration of Christ. 00:06:41.73\00:06:45.70 You remember in the mountain together with Moses there, 00:06:45.70\00:06:49.04 so we have evidence that those two individuals 00:06:49.04\00:06:52.54 did not face death, but they are exceptions. 00:06:52.54\00:06:56.64 We would not consider anybody else, 00:06:56.64\00:07:00.28 at least from the biblical perspective, 00:07:00.28\00:07:02.55 that have this kind of experience. 00:07:02.55\00:07:05.69 >>So those are just a couple from Old Testament times 00:07:07.49\00:07:10.46 who were translated, who never saw death. 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.76 But there are some who lived in Old Testament times 00:07:12.76\00:07:15.80 who did die, did experience death, 00:07:15.80\00:07:19.23 and then were resurrected. 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.00 Share a few of those stories with us. 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.37 >>Well, the first example is definitely Moses. 00:07:24.67\00:07:29.31 Moses... 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.65 It gives the impression that he would go 00:07:31.65\00:07:35.25 into the promised land, 00:07:35.25\00:07:37.65 but he had a pitfall, 00:07:37.65\00:07:40.92 and in a place where he should just speak to the rock, 00:07:40.92\00:07:45.99 he really spanked the rock or whatever you want to say. 00:07:47.36\00:07:50.37 And that was not God's plan. 00:07:50.37\00:07:52.10 And so he paid the price for it. 00:07:52.10\00:07:54.47 But God had a better plan for Moses. 00:07:54.47\00:07:57.71 And the Bible pass-- 00:07:57.71\00:07:59.07 especially the end of the book of Deuteronomy, 00:07:59.07\00:08:02.78 says that he was really-- 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.61 he died, and God Himself buried him. 00:08:06.68\00:08:11.39 And later on, according to the book of Jude 00:08:11.39\00:08:16.29 the small book in the New Testament, there was a dispute 00:08:16.29\00:08:20.03 when God decided to raise him up and take to heaven. 00:08:20.03\00:08:24.33 And we have evidences that that was actually the case, 00:08:24.33\00:08:27.90 that he was taken to heaven 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.70 when he also appeared in the mountain of transfiguration 00:08:29.70\00:08:33.81 with Elijah there and spoke with Jesus. 00:08:33.81\00:08:37.71 And you remember the reaction of Peter, 00:08:37.71\00:08:41.02 even was, "Why don't we build, make a few tents here 00:08:41.02\00:08:44.99 for them to remain with us?" 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.29 But that was actually something very special. 00:08:47.29\00:08:50.49 I would like just to call your attention to something 00:08:51.86\00:08:55.30 a little bit out of the conventional one. 00:08:55.30\00:08:59.93 Those who believe in the natural immortality of the soul 00:09:01.27\00:09:05.31 have difficulties explaining how the body 00:09:05.31\00:09:09.28 is being buried over there 00:09:09.28\00:09:13.75 and the spirit goes to God. So in this line, 00:09:13.75\00:09:17.55 two Greek church fathers, 00:09:17.55\00:09:21.59 and one is Origen, 00:09:21.59\00:09:24.13 and the other one Clement of Alexandria, 00:09:24.13\00:09:27.13 and those were from the school of Alexandria. 00:09:27.13\00:09:31.23 They're mystical. 00:09:31.23\00:09:32.77 They said there were actually two Moses there, 00:09:32.77\00:09:37.31 one, the body was buried, dead, 00:09:37.31\00:09:42.28 and the other one ascended to heaven. 00:09:42.28\00:09:46.85 But this is not what the Bible says. 00:09:46.85\00:09:49.05 You see how presuppositions really count? 00:09:49.05\00:09:52.99 Actually, what really the Bible says 00:09:52.99\00:09:56.56 is that he was buried 00:09:56.56\00:09:59.96 and then later on raised. 00:09:59.96\00:10:01.96 And he was the type of other people 00:10:01.96\00:10:05.47 that would have the same experience. 00:10:05.47\00:10:07.50 And this is definitely also the hope 00:10:07.50\00:10:09.70 of Christians in general. 00:10:09.70\00:10:13.27 >>So there is most definitely hope 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.21 from some of the stories in the Old Testament. 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.25 On Monday, you talked about two Old Testament cases 00:10:17.25\00:10:21.95 of people who were resurrected. 00:10:21.95\00:10:24.25 Pull those apart a little bit. 00:10:25.15\00:10:26.35 What are some of the similarities between these cases 00:10:26.35\00:10:28.72 and some of the differences between them? 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.59 >>It's interesting that Elijah, 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.50 one of those who did not face death 00:10:33.50\00:10:35.70 when he was really on this earth 00:10:35.70\00:10:39.53 during his prophetic ministry, 00:10:40.67\00:10:44.04 he visited a widow, 00:10:44.04\00:10:49.01 and definitely in this case, 00:10:49.91\00:10:52.18 the son of the the widow died. 00:10:53.92\00:10:58.05 And he performed, through God's power-- 00:10:58.05\00:11:01.32 definitely he did not have power-- 00:11:01.32\00:11:03.69 he raised from the dead that boy. 00:11:03.69\00:11:08.30 But then later on you have another incident. 00:11:08.30\00:11:12.50 And that happened with Elijah. 00:11:12.50\00:11:16.10 You remember that he asked 00:11:16.10\00:11:17.81 for a double portion of the Spirit, 00:11:17.81\00:11:20.44 and he had a similar experience also. 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.88 And in that case, 00:11:23.88\00:11:25.78 in that case also a resurrection took place. 00:11:27.08\00:11:30.89 In two cases, 00:11:30.89\00:11:32.65 there were mothers grieving. 00:11:32.65\00:11:36.62 One was even not from Israel, 00:11:36.62\00:11:41.33 was a foreigner. So God does not discriminate. 00:11:41.33\00:11:44.93 And the other one was, 00:11:44.93\00:11:46.84 but in both cases, God really used the prophet 00:11:46.84\00:11:51.01 as an instrument to raise them from the dead. 00:11:51.01\00:11:54.34 And of course, the question that you might ask: 00:11:54.34\00:11:57.45 Why these two if there were so many other ones 00:11:57.45\00:12:01.28 that could be raised as well? 00:12:01.28\00:12:03.22 >>And it's entirely possible 00:12:04.35\00:12:05.82 that there were others who were raised. 00:12:05.82\00:12:07.69 Maybe we don't have reference to them 00:12:07.69\00:12:10.43 in the pages of Scripture. 00:12:10.43\00:12:14.30 We have certain examples that we do see; 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.46 others that we don't. 00:12:16.46\00:12:18.10 And we are gonna be coming back and taking a look 00:12:18.10\00:12:20.04 at several other examples of this and some things 00:12:20.04\00:12:23.20 in the New Testament as well. 00:12:23.20\00:12:25.77 So why is this so important? 00:12:25.77\00:12:27.98 Well, as you've been learning week by week, 00:12:27.98\00:12:30.55 there are some significant misconceptions 00:12:30.55\00:12:32.88 about this subject, the subject of death, 00:12:32.88\00:12:35.28 the subject of a resurrection, 00:12:35.28\00:12:38.22 when it takes place, where people go when they die, 00:12:38.22\00:12:41.99 a lot of misconceptions. 00:12:41.99\00:12:43.66 And those misconceptions can lead us to make decisions 00:12:43.66\00:12:48.00 in our life that aren't always the best. 00:12:48.00\00:12:51.77 So we're spending some time this quarter looking at 00:12:51.77\00:12:54.57 the subject of "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.74 And if you would like to get even more out of the lesson, 00:12:57.74\00:13:00.44 you already have the Sabbath School Bible Study Guide, 00:13:00.44\00:13:03.48 you're listening to the author, Dr. Alberto Timm, 00:13:03.48\00:13:06.28 share some thoughts, additional thoughts on this 00:13:06.28\00:13:09.52 during our "Sabbath School" program, 00:13:09.52\00:13:11.69 but I wanna encourage you to pick up 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.59 the companion book to the lesson, 00:13:13.59\00:13:16.39 and that is "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:16.39\00:13:19.33 Of course, the author is Dr. Alberto Timm, 00:13:19.33\00:13:22.00 our guest on our "Sabbath School" program. 00:13:22.00\00:13:24.93 You can pick this book up at itiswritten.shop, 00:13:24.93\00:13:29.00 itiswritten.shop. 00:13:29.00\00:13:30.57 It is the companion book to the Sabbath school guide, 00:13:30.57\00:13:33.61 called, again, "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:33.61\00:13:37.55 Pick up a copy, and you will get 00:13:37.55\00:13:38.85 even more out of this subject, 00:13:38.85\00:13:40.65 and you'll be able to share it more effectively with others 00:13:40.65\00:13:44.15 who you may know, 00:13:44.15\00:13:45.65 who are a little bit misguided on this subject, 00:13:45.65\00:13:49.09 so that they can have hope and encouragement as well. 00:13:49.09\00:13:51.76 We're going to be back in just a couple of minutes 00:13:51.76\00:13:54.10 as we continue our study 00:13:54.10\00:13:55.80 on looking at resurrections in the Old Testament. 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.30 We'll be right back. 00:13:58.30\00:13:59.40 (theme music swells and ends) 00:13:59.40\00:14:01.97 >>[John Bradshaw] You know that at It Is Written 00:14:03.44\00:14:04.74 we are serious about studying the Word of God, 00:14:04.74\00:14:07.24 and we encourage you to be serious as well. 00:14:07.24\00:14:10.01 Well, here's what you do 00:14:10.01\00:14:11.05 if you want to dig deeper into God's Word: 00:14:11.05\00:14:13.11 Go to itiswritten.study 00:14:13.11\00:14:15.35 for the It Is Written Bible Study Guides online, 00:14:15.35\00:14:18.22 25 in-depth Bible studies that will take you 00:14:18.22\00:14:20.86 through the major teachings of the Bible. 00:14:20.86\00:14:23.22 You'll be blessed, 00:14:23.22\00:14:24.63 and it's something you'll want to tell others about as well: 00:14:24.63\00:14:26.86 itiswritten.study. 00:14:26.86\00:14:28.50 Go further: itiswritten.study. 00:14:28.50\00:14:31.17 Thank you for remembering that It Is Written exists 00:14:33.67\00:14:36.27 because of the kindness of people just like you. 00:14:36.27\00:14:39.07 To support this international life-changing ministry, 00:14:39.07\00:14:42.28 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 00:14:42.28\00:14:46.51 You can send your tax-deductible gift 00:14:46.51\00:14:48.08 to the address on your screen, 00:14:48.08\00:14:49.38 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:14:49.38\00:14:53.36 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 00:14:53.36\00:14:56.19 Our number again is 800-253-3000. 00:14:56.19\00:15:00.06 Or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 00:15:00.06\00:15:03.57 (upbeat theme music) 00:15:04.37\00:15:07.10 >>[Eric] Welcome back to "Sabbath School," 00:15:08.60\00:15:10.14 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:15:10.14\00:15:12.17 We're continuing our study of lesson number five 00:15:12.17\00:15:15.64 in the quarterly looking at "Death, Dying, 00:15:15.64\00:15:18.35 and the Future Hope." 00:15:18.35\00:15:19.81 Resurrections in the Old Testament-- 00:15:20.88\00:15:22.85 Alberto, we've looked at a couple of them already, 00:15:22.85\00:15:25.22 and we've talked about some people who were translated, 00:15:25.22\00:15:28.59 but on Tuesday's lesson and on Wednesday's lesson, 00:15:28.59\00:15:31.86 we look at the son of the widow of Nain, 00:15:31.86\00:15:34.73 and we look at Jairus' daughter. 00:15:34.73\00:15:37.80 So what is the significance of these individuals, 00:15:37.80\00:15:41.30 the way they were resurrected, 00:15:41.30\00:15:42.64 why their resurrection is important to us today? 00:15:42.64\00:15:45.37 >>Well, the first case that you mentioned, Eric, 00:15:46.71\00:15:49.11 the one, the widow of Nain, 00:15:49.11\00:15:51.81 that was something completely surprising 00:15:51.81\00:15:54.82 because Jesus arrived at that place, 00:15:54.82\00:15:58.25 there was a funeral service 00:15:58.25\00:16:01.96 at that time going on, 00:16:01.96\00:16:04.36 and people were definitely very down 00:16:04.36\00:16:08.30 because of that situation. The son had died. 00:16:08.30\00:16:11.97 And Jesus just approached the place where the corpse was 00:16:11.97\00:16:16.71 and really raised him from the dead. 00:16:16.71\00:16:20.94 In other words, he came to life again. 00:16:20.94\00:16:24.71 And people were amazed. 00:16:24.71\00:16:27.48 How does it come that somebody approached here 00:16:27.48\00:16:31.12 and raised from the dead somebody that not even asked? 00:16:31.12\00:16:35.09 And the second case is the death of Jairus. 00:16:35.09\00:16:39.03 And Jairus--really, his young daughter, 00:16:40.16\00:16:44.00 12 years of age, was sick, 00:16:44.00\00:16:47.60 and then he went to Jesus, 00:16:47.60\00:16:49.80 and he believed that Jesus could heal her. 00:16:49.80\00:16:52.67 Definitely He has done in many other cases, 00:16:52.67\00:16:55.94 has helped other people. And there are evidences, 00:16:55.94\00:16:59.11 I believe, that happened in Capernaum. 00:16:59.11\00:17:01.78 Only--if you go over there, Capernaum only 00:17:01.78\00:17:03.79 will be the city where Jesus really had, so to say, 00:17:03.79\00:17:07.59 the "headquarters" of his ministry in Galilee. 00:17:07.59\00:17:12.66 And then he asked. 00:17:13.33\00:17:14.73 But then came the news that she already died. 00:17:14.73\00:17:19.17 And when Jesus came to the house, 00:17:19.17\00:17:23.44 they said, "Well, there is nothing to be done 00:17:23.44\00:17:26.61 because she already died." 00:17:26.61\00:17:29.91 And in this case, the people over there 00:17:29.91\00:17:34.98 were even wondering what would take place. 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.95 And Jesus used the expression, very meaningful, 00:17:38.95\00:17:43.39 when He said, "Well, she's just sleeping." 00:17:43.39\00:17:48.40 And then they said, "No, she is dead." 00:17:49.50\00:17:52.47 And then He raised her up; 00:17:53.54\00:17:58.21 she came to life again. 00:17:58.21\00:18:01.01 But then people went to the other direction. 00:18:01.01\00:18:04.31 Well, Jesus just wakened 00:18:04.31\00:18:08.78 this little girl up from the dead. 00:18:08.78\00:18:13.29 But those were people really that were doubting 00:18:13.29\00:18:16.26 a little bit, but they saw the miracle taking place. 00:18:16.26\00:18:19.59 >>So two very interesting experiences 00:18:21.06\00:18:24.17 that Jesus had in raising people, but really, 00:18:24.17\00:18:26.87 none compares with the story of Lazarus. 00:18:26.87\00:18:31.71 And in John, chapter 11, we get a very clear picture 00:18:31.71\00:18:35.58 of what happened in this resurrection. 00:18:35.58\00:18:38.98 And this is one that, it has been considered 00:18:38.98\00:18:41.75 one of the most powerful miracles, influential miracles, 00:18:41.75\00:18:45.52 significant miracles that Jesus did. 00:18:45.52\00:18:49.52 And it's also one that got Him more hated 00:18:49.52\00:18:53.93 than any of His other miracles. 00:18:53.93\00:18:55.86 It didn't make Him very popular, 00:18:55.86\00:18:57.40 at least with a certain class of people. 00:18:57.40\00:19:00.34 John 11 talks about the resurrection of Lazarus of 00:19:00.34\00:19:05.37 Bethany. So who was Lazarus? 00:19:06.04\00:19:08.74 What relationship did he and his siblings have with Jesus? 00:19:08.74\00:19:13.82 And what came out of this? What made it so significant? 00:19:15.18\00:19:18.72 >>Actually Jesus was a very close friend 00:19:19.85\00:19:23.43 with the two ladies 00:19:23.43\00:19:27.96 and also with Lazarus, 00:19:27.96\00:19:30.40 who was a brother. 00:19:30.40\00:19:32.27 So it seems that Jesus, during His ministry, 00:19:32.27\00:19:36.50 He faced several turmoils and problems here and there, 00:19:36.50\00:19:40.41 but that was a place where He could feel at home with them. 00:19:40.41\00:19:44.61 But then came the news 00:19:44.61\00:19:45.88 that Lazarus was sick and finally died. 00:19:45.88\00:19:50.29 And of course, they went to Jesus 00:19:51.72\00:19:54.29 knowing that He had all the power to heal 00:19:54.29\00:19:58.86 sick people and also to raise the dead. 00:19:58.86\00:20:02.86 And then Jesus came. 00:20:02.86\00:20:05.07 But it's interesting that Jesus did not go immediately. 00:20:06.40\00:20:10.87 He delayed His journey over there, 00:20:10.87\00:20:13.68 and people were even wondering why; 00:20:13.68\00:20:16.44 He could have gone immediately. 00:20:16.44\00:20:19.18 I think that we have enough evidences to believe 00:20:19.18\00:20:22.02 that in the case of the resurrection 00:20:22.02\00:20:24.82 of the daughter of Jairus, people were claiming, 00:20:24.82\00:20:28.99 "Well, she was not actually dead. 00:20:28.99\00:20:32.53 "He just Himself said that He just wake her up 00:20:32.53\00:20:37.20 from her sleep." 00:20:37.20\00:20:39.10 But now there was no way to deny 00:20:40.20\00:20:44.57 that Lazarus was dead 00:20:44.57\00:20:47.24 because he was even smelling bad, at that, 00:20:47.24\00:20:51.48 over there. So there was--he was even buried. 00:20:52.81\00:20:56.38 There was no other evidence. And then Jesus comes. 00:20:56.38\00:21:01.19 And there is an interesting dialogue with, 00:21:01.19\00:21:04.43 especially with Martha, and I like very much a statement 00:21:04.43\00:21:08.03 that you find here in John, chapter 11. 00:21:08.03\00:21:11.90 And this is verse 25. 00:21:11.90\00:21:15.77 Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. 00:21:17.11\00:21:22.24 "He who believes in me, through he may die, 00:21:23.31\00:21:26.98 he shall live." 00:21:26.98\00:21:29.85 So Jesus speaks about His power. 00:21:29.85\00:21:34.32 And then it goes on, and He even goes to a point 00:21:34.32\00:21:37.73 where He says to Marta, "If you believe, 00:21:37.73\00:21:42.76 you will see the glory of God." 00:21:43.67\00:21:46.67 So the glory of God can only be seen by faith. 00:21:46.67\00:21:51.64 I like very much-- 00:21:52.57\00:21:54.11 there is a theologian that says that "doxa theou," 00:21:54.11\00:21:58.35 or the "glory of God," can only be seen 00:21:58.35\00:22:01.88 by "pistis," or "faith," using the Greek terms to it. 00:22:01.88\00:22:06.96 But then Jesus comes to life, and what is 00:22:08.09\00:22:11.33 impressive, what is really amazing in this story is-- 00:22:11.33\00:22:16.36 and I would say not only this story, 00:22:17.43\00:22:19.80 but all the ones that actually experience death 00:22:19.80\00:22:24.81 in the Old Testament, during Christ's earthly ministry, 00:22:24.81\00:22:29.14 none of them presented any kind 00:22:29.14\00:22:33.08 of nice near-death report 00:22:33.08\00:22:36.82 saying, "Well, I saw angelic being welcoming me 00:22:36.82\00:22:41.49 to paradise," or a tunnel of light and so on. 00:22:41.49\00:22:45.33 Nothing, there was nothing. 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.93 It was just something normal, 00:22:47.93\00:22:50.63 from the non-existence back to existence again. 00:22:50.63\00:22:55.60 >>So looking at this story 00:22:57.01\00:22:58.54 and kind of trying to fit together the common idea 00:22:58.54\00:23:03.45 of what happens when you die, in the Christian world, 00:23:04.78\00:23:06.21 that when you die, some part of you, your soul 00:23:06.21\00:23:08.52 or your spirit continues to live on 00:23:08.52\00:23:10.49 and goes immediately to heaven, 00:23:10.49\00:23:12.82 it's interesting when you look at this dialogue 00:23:12.82\00:23:14.92 between Jesus and Martha 00:23:14.92\00:23:18.19 in verse number 21, John 11, verse 21, 00:23:18.19\00:23:22.63 it says, "Now Martha said to Jesus, 00:23:22.63\00:23:24.63 "'Lord, if You had been here, 00:23:24.63\00:23:26.40 my brother would not have died.'" 00:23:26.40\00:23:29.27 And then she says, "'But even now I know 00:23:30.34\00:23:32.77 "that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.' 00:23:32.77\00:23:35.28 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.'" 00:23:35.28\00:23:39.51 And then Martha makes an interesting statement. 00:23:39.51\00:23:41.25 She says, "I know that he will rise again 00:23:41.25\00:23:45.69 in the resurrection at the last day." 00:23:45.69\00:23:48.32 She doesn't say, 00:23:48.32\00:23:49.66 I know that my brother is up in heaven right now 00:23:49.66\00:23:51.79 walking the streets of gold singing with the angels. 00:23:51.79\00:23:54.60 There's--she didn't get that idea. 00:23:54.60\00:23:57.30 And of course, she wouldn't have gotten that idea 00:23:57.30\00:24:00.17 because she knew what happened when a person dies 00:24:00.17\00:24:02.94 'cause she got her theology directly from Jesus. 00:24:02.94\00:24:06.14 And I think there's maybe a lesson for us there too. 00:24:06.14\00:24:08.84 If we get our theology from Jesus 00:24:08.84\00:24:10.78 rather than maybe popular teachers 00:24:10.78\00:24:13.11 or maybe rather than from a church or what a church teaches, 00:24:13.11\00:24:17.32 let's get our beliefs from Jesus. 00:24:17.32\00:24:20.19 I think we'll be a little better off. 00:24:20.19\00:24:21.56 What do you think, Alberto? 00:24:21.56\00:24:22.96 >>Well, that is precisely the case, and I am really thankful 00:24:22.96\00:24:26.86 that you brought this matter up, because even more, 00:24:26.86\00:24:30.93 Jesus would have the chance of correcting Martha 00:24:30.93\00:24:35.44 if she was mistaken in this matter here, but not. 00:24:35.44\00:24:39.74 And plus, it would be unfair probably to bring Lazarus back 00:24:39.74\00:24:44.41 from paradise, rejoicing over there, to have to suffer here. 00:24:44.41\00:24:49.32 And if you continue reading the Gospel of John, 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.49 you will see that they did not only hate Jesus 00:24:52.49\00:24:56.83 but even were planning to kill Lazarus, because that was 00:24:56.83\00:25:00.86 the argument against the Pharisees 00:25:00.86\00:25:05.23 that really denied the power of Jesus 00:25:05.23\00:25:10.31 and His divinity 00:25:10.84\00:25:13.61 or being really the Messiah. 00:25:13.61\00:25:17.08 >>So Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. 00:25:18.48\00:25:21.52 He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live." 00:25:21.52\00:25:26.59 We've looked at some significant resurrections today 00:25:27.79\00:25:29.96 in this week's lesson. 00:25:29.96\00:25:32.29 What are some lessons that we can learn 00:25:32.29\00:25:34.60 from these resurrections? What can we take away from this 00:25:34.60\00:25:37.73 that will give us hope and encouragement? 00:25:37.73\00:25:39.83 >>Before we go to the lessons, 00:25:39.83\00:25:42.40 let me just highlight one more point that I like very much. 00:25:42.40\00:25:46.44 One of the Greek church fathers, John Chrysostom, 00:25:47.81\00:25:52.45 he even stated that Jesus had to speak 00:25:53.55\00:25:57.22 or to name Lazarus, 00:25:57.22\00:26:00.06 mention his name, because if He would just say, 00:26:01.39\00:26:05.39 "You should come from the grave, to raise up," 00:26:06.49\00:26:10.20 all those who died in Christ would have, or other-- 00:26:10.20\00:26:14.60 the children of God would raise from the dead. 00:26:14.60\00:26:17.64 So He mentioned specifically his name 00:26:17.64\00:26:21.38 so that only he would be raised; such a power has Christ. 00:26:21.38\00:26:26.15 And this is something that we know; that time will come 00:26:26.15\00:26:28.98 when really Jesus will raise from the grave all those 00:26:28.98\00:26:33.52 who died in Him. But I think that there are some points 00:26:33.52\00:26:38.19 that we should consider first of all. 00:26:38.19\00:26:40.96 And one of those is very clear, 00:26:40.96\00:26:43.80 that resurrection is the only hope of everlasting life 00:26:43.80\00:26:48.77 for those who died. And secondly, 00:26:48.77\00:26:52.61 also Lazarus and the other ones are types, 00:26:52.61\00:26:57.61 or in other words, are the "first fruits," 00:26:57.61\00:27:01.82 if you want to use the biblical language, 00:27:01.82\00:27:04.15 of the great multitude of those who will be raised 00:27:04.15\00:27:08.59 from the dead when Jesus comes. 00:27:08.59\00:27:12.03 And if you have some beloved ones 00:27:12.03\00:27:14.46 that are no longer with you, as I do, 00:27:14.46\00:27:17.83 my parents, my siblings. And so, what a glorious moment 00:27:17.83\00:27:22.14 and what a glorious hope we have for their resurrection. 00:27:22.14\00:27:25.77 And I hope that we will be ready to rejoin 00:27:25.77\00:27:30.85 all those who be with Christ in heaven. 00:27:31.91\00:27:34.32 >>Thank you, Alberto, for painting such a beautiful 00:27:35.82\00:27:38.99 picture of what the future looks like for those who are in 00:27:38.99\00:27:43.66 Christ. Thank you for joining us again this week. 00:27:43.66\00:27:45.59 We are going to continue our study of "Death, Dying, 00:27:45.59\00:27:48.80 and the Future Hope" when we come back again next week 00:27:48.80\00:27:53.03 on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:53.03\00:27:55.94 God bless you. We'll see you then. 00:27:55.94\00:27:57.87 (upbeat theme music) 00:27:57.87\00:28:01.34 (music ends) 00:28:26.87\00:28:28.97
