(uplifting theme music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:04.27 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.38\00:00:14.78 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.78\00:00:17.25 We're glad to have you back again this week 00:00:17.25\00:00:19.08 as we look at lesson number four in our study "On Death, 00:00:19.08\00:00:22.72 Dying, and the Future Hope." This week we're gonna be 00:00:22.72\00:00:25.95 looking at "The Old Testament Hope." 00:00:25.95\00:00:28.69 What hope is there in the Old Testament 00:00:28.69\00:00:31.23 in this subject that we are delving into? 00:00:31.23\00:00:33.50 And to help us understand an answer to that question 00:00:33.50\00:00:36.60 is our guest again this week, Dr. Alberto Timm; 00:00:36.60\00:00:39.50 he's an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:39.50\00:00:42.20 Alberto, welcome back. 00:00:42.20\00:00:44.07 >>It's an honor for me to join you every week. 00:00:44.07\00:00:47.84 >>So let's take a look at this now. Old Testament, 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.28 there's a lot of stories in the Old Testament, 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.68 and sometimes people will present this idea 00:00:52.68\00:00:55.82 that there's a lot of pain and suffering 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.62 and death and terribleness, 00:00:57.62\00:00:59.25 and you've got an angry God in the Old Testament 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.19 and so forth. 00:01:01.19\00:01:02.46 I don't know that that's necessarily completely biblical, 00:01:02.46\00:01:04.59 but it's a viewpoint that is prevailing out there 00:01:04.59\00:01:08.60 in some circles, 00:01:08.60\00:01:10.00 but there is certainly some death in the Old Testament, 00:01:10.00\00:01:13.17 and there's also some hope, and we want to try 00:01:13.17\00:01:16.04 to draw some of that out. 00:01:16.04\00:01:17.41 I wanna go over to the book of Job and read a passage here 00:01:17.41\00:01:21.81 from Job, chapter 19, to kind of get us started. 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.71 In Job, chapter 19, starting in verse number 25, 00:01:25.71\00:01:29.28 here's what's recorded. 00:01:29.28\00:01:30.59 It says, "For I know that my Redeemer lives, 00:01:31.65\00:01:34.66 and He shall stand at last on the earth; 00:01:34.66\00:01:37.26 and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, 00:01:37.26\00:01:40.43 that in my flesh I shall see God, 00:01:40.43\00:01:44.07 whom I shall see for myself, 00:01:44.07\00:01:46.17 and my eyes shall behold, and not another. 00:01:46.17\00:01:48.74 How my heart yearns within me!" 00:01:48.74\00:01:52.07 It's almost as if Job had been through a lot of pain 00:01:52.07\00:01:56.08 and was looking for something better. 00:01:56.08\00:01:58.05 I don't know if that's the case or not. What do you think? 00:01:58.05\00:02:01.32 >>Actually, I don't recall any other human being, 00:02:01.32\00:02:05.09 as far as I know, that has suffered so much as he, 00:02:05.09\00:02:08.99 I mean, as Job has. 00:02:08.99\00:02:10.99 Actually, it was not only a physical pain-- 00:02:10.99\00:02:16.03 because, of course, he has physical pains-- 00:02:17.13\00:02:20.57 but he lost his livestock, many of his possessions. 00:02:20.57\00:02:25.64 And when you are in a trouble, 00:02:26.44\00:02:29.34 you usually expect some kind of word of encouragement, 00:02:29.34\00:02:34.32 of support, of comfort. 00:02:34.32\00:02:37.49 But even his friends went against him. 00:02:37.49\00:02:41.02 And worse than this, his children died, 00:02:41.02\00:02:45.66 and his own wife was speaking badly about himself. 00:02:45.66\00:02:49.60 So he was absolutely alone. 00:02:49.60\00:02:52.10 I know some people that have lost a child, 00:02:53.23\00:02:57.81 and that is very painful. 00:02:57.81\00:03:00.34 You have the hope of seeing that child growing up, 00:03:00.34\00:03:05.38 and when the child dies or somebody that you really love, 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.82 a beloved one, it's very painful. 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.92 But can you imagine in the case of Job 00:03:12.92\00:03:15.72 with all these problems going on-- 00:03:15.72\00:03:19.59 and each one of us, as I mentioned before, 00:03:19.59\00:03:22.40 needs a word of support. If you are alone in this world, 00:03:22.40\00:03:25.87 because nobody is an island, 00:03:25.87\00:03:28.70 if nobody is on your side, 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.01 you are really in a very bad situation. 00:03:31.01\00:03:36.08 And this is the context that we see here 00:03:37.08\00:03:39.35 somebody that suffered a lot. 00:03:39.35\00:03:42.08 And then comes a question also, 00:03:42.08\00:03:44.55 and I don't know if you ever ask this question for yourself, 00:03:45.89\00:03:50.39 but there is the matter 00:03:50.39\00:03:52.69 of why bad people prosper, 00:03:52.69\00:03:57.17 and sometimes good people who trust the Lord 00:03:57.17\00:04:00.64 are in a very difficult situation. 00:04:00.64\00:04:02.64 You'll remember that even the Psalmist almost lost his faith 00:04:02.64\00:04:07.11 till he went into the sanctuary 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.24 and saw the end of those who are prospering. 00:04:09.24\00:04:14.15 So in this case here, in the most difficult situation, 00:04:14.15\00:04:19.22 Job said, "No, I think that I'd better die now, 00:04:21.89\00:04:25.63 and then my soul will be to go to paradise, 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.66 and so I will be rejoicing over the..." 00:04:28.66\00:04:31.63 No. He spoke about his hope 00:04:31.63\00:04:34.84 of being a hope of resurrection: 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.11 "In my flesh"--or in my body as a person, 00:04:37.11\00:04:41.68 as an individual--"I will see the Lord" when He will appear. 00:04:41.68\00:04:46.75 In other words, you have a clear reference, 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.65 seeing this passage, to the body resurrection. 00:04:49.65\00:04:53.32 >>So there's a clear reference to that, as you mentioned. 00:04:53.32\00:04:56.86 But I wanna come back and hit on something 00:04:56.86\00:05:01.36 that you touched on, and you really do an excellent job 00:05:01.36\00:05:05.50 of asking this question at the end of Sunday's lesson. 00:05:05.50\00:05:08.80 In Sunday's lesson it says, 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.41 How can we learn to trust God 00:05:10.41\00:05:12.64 even amid the harsh unfairness of life? 00:05:12.64\00:05:17.28 I don't wanna rush past the story of Job 00:05:17.28\00:05:19.15 without dwelling on this question for a moment. 00:05:19.15\00:05:21.22 How do we trust God? How can we trust God when we are, 00:05:21.22\00:05:25.32 maybe we're not going through the same things 00:05:26.42\00:05:27.76 that Job went through, 00:05:27.76\00:05:29.16 but we're going through our own trials. 00:05:29.16\00:05:31.23 How do we learn to trust Him in that? 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.43 >>I think that this is not just an act; it's a process. 00:05:35.00\00:05:39.07 For instance, love is not something 00:05:39.07\00:05:41.27 that starts from day to night or something like that. 00:05:41.27\00:05:45.17 It just jumps in, and you are starting love. You know, 00:05:45.17\00:05:48.94 love is something that grows, and you have to nourish it. 00:05:48.94\00:05:52.61 The same thing happens about trusting God. I have to learn 00:05:52.61\00:05:57.25 to trust God in my daily experience. 00:05:57.25\00:06:02.02 Simple actions here and there, 00:06:02.02\00:06:05.13 you face a issue here, another problem there, 00:06:05.13\00:06:09.86 and you trust in God, and this builds up faith, 00:06:09.86\00:06:14.20 trust, and hope. 00:06:14.20\00:06:16.07 So if you are able to trust God in the daily life 00:06:16.07\00:06:20.24 based on His word and with something in mind, 00:06:20.24\00:06:25.31 because sometimes we believe that God's blessings 00:06:26.58\00:06:28.92 are only if I prosper. 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.25 Not necessarily. 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.99 You remember that even Paul and some of the apostles 00:06:33.99\00:06:37.56 considered to be a privilege to suffer for the Lord's cause. 00:06:37.56\00:06:41.90 As He suffered, they were suffering. 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.77 So I know that whatever I will be facing 00:06:44.77\00:06:49.44 is something that God is with me. 00:06:49.44\00:06:53.61 So God never promised that He would remove 00:06:53.61\00:06:57.01 all the possibilities of facing a storm. 00:06:57.01\00:07:00.52 But what makes the difference is that He is with us 00:07:00.52\00:07:04.59 within the storm. So you should consider something. 00:07:04.59\00:07:09.66 Remember there is a stating, a little prayer that says, 00:07:11.03\00:07:13.43 "God, help me to remember that noting will happen today 00:07:14.73\00:07:19.27 that both of us together cannot handle." 00:07:20.27\00:07:23.57 >>And that should encourage us, to remember 00:07:25.27\00:07:26.91 that He's there with us. He goes through the storms with us. 00:07:26.91\00:07:30.51 He doesn't abandon us in the storms. 00:07:30.51\00:07:33.62 Encouraging words, thank you. 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.42 >>Eric, you could even ask another question, 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.55 and that would be, why did Lord allow--I mean, the Lord, 00:07:38.55\00:07:43.06 God--allow Job to suffer so much? 00:07:43.06\00:07:47.60 Well, I think it was for his own sake. 00:07:47.60\00:07:51.27 I don't know; only God knows. 00:07:51.27\00:07:54.34 But within the framework of the cosmic controversy 00:07:54.34\00:07:57.71 that is mentioned at the beginning of the book, 00:07:57.71\00:08:00.61 it was a witness in favor of God 00:08:01.84\00:08:05.65 and against Satan, because Satan was saying, 00:08:05.65\00:08:08.52 "Well, You have blessed him so much. 00:08:08.52\00:08:11.32 He prospers; that's the reason 00:08:11.32\00:08:13.62 why he serves you so faithfully, 00:08:13.62\00:08:16.16 but let's remove the blessings and see how he will behave." 00:08:16.16\00:08:19.73 So within the great controversy, that had a meaning. 00:08:19.73\00:08:23.06 And I think that this story not only happened, 00:08:23.06\00:08:26.84 but also was recorded in the Bible 00:08:26.84\00:08:30.41 as a way of helping us 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.41 when myself, you, and whoever else 00:08:33.41\00:08:37.45 is facing the harshness of life. 00:08:37.45\00:08:42.35 >>And God does include these stories for us 00:08:42.35\00:08:44.89 so that we can get through the, as you said, 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.09 the harshness of life. There's another interesting story, 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.63 that is, of course, recorded in the Bible, 00:08:50.63\00:08:52.43 referenced in the memory text that we have for this week, 00:08:52.43\00:08:55.03 in Hebrews 11, verses 17 and 19. 00:08:55.03\00:08:59.37 Verse 17 says, "By faith Abraham, when he was tested, 00:08:59.37\00:09:02.97 offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises 00:09:02.97\00:09:07.11 offered up his only begotten son"-- 00:09:07.11\00:09:09.94 verse 19: "concluding that God was able to raise him up, 00:09:09.94\00:09:13.95 even from the dead, 00:09:13.95\00:09:15.35 from which he also received him in a figurative sense." 00:09:15.35\00:09:20.02 Now, this is--of course, we're talking about 00:09:20.02\00:09:21.92 the New--or the Old Testament in this week, 00:09:21.92\00:09:24.43 but this is a New Testament reference 00:09:24.43\00:09:27.13 to an Old Testament story. 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.26 So unpack this a little bit for us. 00:09:29.26\00:09:31.40 >>Actually, if we read the book of Genesis, 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.30 there is no reference of Abram 00:09:35.30\00:09:38.01 speaking of a resurrection as such. 00:09:38.01\00:09:42.51 But in reality, we believe that the New Testament 00:09:42.51\00:09:45.81 is inspired also by the Holy Spirit. 00:09:45.81\00:09:49.68 So, this is a passage from the New Testament that confirms 00:09:49.68\00:09:54.52 that concept of a bodily resurrection 00:09:54.52\00:09:57.43 was not some foreign idea in the Old Testament. 00:09:57.43\00:10:02.00 We have at least two examples so far. 00:10:02.00\00:10:04.63 We have Job and Abraham, 00:10:04.63\00:10:08.00 both really having this concept, 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.27 so it's not something, a later development 00:10:10.27\00:10:13.64 in human history or biblical history, 00:10:13.64\00:10:16.11 whatever you want to say, in regard to the resurrection. 00:10:16.11\00:10:20.05 It comes from the very beginning. 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.18 >>So all the way back at the very beginning 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.02 in the book of Genesis, 00:10:25.02\00:10:26.09 we have evidence from the New Testament 00:10:26.09\00:10:29.29 that this concept was there. 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.46 We continue seeing it through the Old Testament, 00:10:31.46\00:10:33.66 looking now at Psalm 49 and verse number 15, 00:10:33.66\00:10:38.40 which says, "But God will redeem my soul 00:10:38.40\00:10:41.24 from the power of the grave, for He shall receive me." 00:10:41.24\00:10:45.31 So here again, we see this idea of the resurrection, 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.08 of life beyond death. 00:10:48.08\00:10:50.35 >>Yes. That's exactly the case. 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.92 And if you want to consider soul 00:10:53.92\00:10:56.08 as something separate from the body, 00:10:56.08\00:10:59.15 even in this case the soul would remain in the grave, 00:10:59.15\00:11:03.99 and only through resurrection it would come back. 00:11:03.99\00:11:07.30 But in this case, we believe 00:11:07.30\00:11:09.20 that the soul means, really, the human being, as such, 00:11:09.20\00:11:13.27 and you have another reference to the resurrection. 00:11:13.27\00:11:16.37 >>Yep, and we have also in Psalm 71, 00:11:16.37\00:11:20.28 Psalm, chapter 71, or Psalm 71, verse number 20 00:11:20.28\00:11:25.08 says, "You, who have shown me great and severe troubles, 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.42 shall [receive]"--pardon me--"shall revive me again, 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.99 and bring me up again from the depths of the earth." 00:11:31.99\00:11:35.86 So, couple of references here from Psalms. 00:11:35.86\00:11:39.03 >>Yeah, this here is an ambiguous passage, 00:11:39.03\00:11:42.00 is not as clear as the other ones that we read, 00:11:42.00\00:11:46.03 or that you read, and we discussed a little bit. 00:11:46.03\00:11:50.11 This one is a more ambiguous one. 00:11:50.11\00:11:52.81 It can refer to the resurrection, as such, 00:11:52.81\00:11:57.78 or it can be really he overcoming deep depression-- 00:11:59.18\00:12:02.82 I mean the Psalmist. 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.65 I would say from my perspective, 00:12:04.65\00:12:06.76 and I have some sources that agree with it as well, 00:12:06.76\00:12:10.76 that a primary sense of this passage 00:12:10.76\00:12:13.40 would be overcoming his depression. 00:12:13.40\00:12:17.90 And the secondary sense would be the physical one, 00:12:17.90\00:12:21.94 if you want to add it too. 00:12:21.94\00:12:23.94 But it's a--at least you have here a little glimpse into... 00:12:23.94\00:12:28.24 coming out. >>And so, 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.38 and so in the Old Testament, 00:12:30.38\00:12:31.75 we do have these encouraging words to help us through. 00:12:31.75\00:12:36.32 We're looking at Old Testament hope in the resurrection 00:12:36.32\00:12:40.69 as we look at "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:12:40.69\00:12:44.63 which incidentally happens to be 00:12:44.63\00:12:46.26 the name of the companion book 00:12:46.26\00:12:47.73 for this quarter's Sabbath school study. 00:12:47.73\00:12:50.17 If you're enjoying this subject, 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.67 if you wanna learn more about it, share it with others, 00:12:51.67\00:12:54.17 I wanna encourage you to pick this book up. 00:12:54.17\00:12:56.04 You can find it at itiswritten.shop. 00:12:56.04\00:12:59.11 Again, that's itiswritten.shop. 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.81 It goes into greater detail on the subjects 00:13:01.81\00:13:03.85 that we are looking at. The name of the book again is 00:13:03.85\00:13:05.88 "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.68 The author is our guest this week 00:13:08.68\00:13:10.82 and each week this quarter on "Sabbath School," 00:13:10.82\00:13:13.69 Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:13:13.69\00:13:16.22 When we come back, we're going to continue looking 00:13:16.22\00:13:18.23 at stories in the Old Testament 00:13:18.23\00:13:20.86 that help us to understand the hope that we have even today. 00:13:20.86\00:13:25.90 We're gonna be back in just a moment. We're gonna continue looking now 00:14:38.01\00:14:40.91 at the hope that we have in the Old Testament. 00:14:40.91\00:14:44.21 Let's take a look at the book of Isaiah now, 00:14:44.21\00:14:47.78 Isaiah, chapter 26. 00:14:47.78\00:14:50.12 Alberto, I'm gonna read a couple of verses here, 00:14:50.12\00:14:51.95 verses 14 and 19. In verse 14 it says, 00:14:51.95\00:14:56.59 "They are dead, they will not live." 00:14:56.59\00:14:59.86 Now, that doesn't sound very encouraging 00:14:59.86\00:15:02.43 if it stopped right there, but let's keep reading: 00:15:02.43\00:15:04.90 "They are dead, they will not live; 00:15:04.90\00:15:06.94 they are deceased, they will not rise. 00:15:06.94\00:15:09.20 Therefore You have punished and destroyed them, 00:15:09.20\00:15:12.07 and made all their memory to perish." 00:15:12.07\00:15:14.94 But then in verse number 19, you see a contrast here; 00:15:14.94\00:15:19.38 it says, "Your dead shall live; 00:15:19.38\00:15:21.52 together with my dead body they shall arise. 00:15:21.52\00:15:24.09 Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; 00:15:24.09\00:15:26.65 for your dew is like the dew of herbs, 00:15:26.65\00:15:28.82 and the earth shall cast out the dead." 00:15:28.82\00:15:31.79 So, there are the dead, but then there are those 00:15:31.79\00:15:35.43 who are cast out of the earth. They are no longer dead. 00:15:35.43\00:15:39.77 >>Yeah, this is a very significant passage, 00:15:40.87\00:15:44.24 because first of all, in a negative term, it really says 00:15:44.24\00:15:48.94 that the unrighteousness, the wicked, 00:15:48.94\00:15:53.18 they have no life, and even their memory will be gone. 00:15:53.18\00:15:57.79 So I think that this passage, from the negative side, 00:15:57.79\00:16:02.69 it really speaks about the end of the life 00:16:02.69\00:16:06.90 and even of the memory of those who really are not with God, 00:16:06.90\00:16:11.57 the enemies of God. But then you have the positive side, 00:16:11.57\00:16:15.50 and the positive side is that there will be a resurrection. 00:16:16.91\00:16:20.88 And in this passage here I understand to be very meaningful 00:16:20.88\00:16:24.91 for one reason; the passages that we considered so far, 00:16:24.91\00:16:29.68 they deal more with individuals like Job, 00:16:29.68\00:16:33.46 the Psalmist, Abraham, 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.86 and so that they believe that they would live, 00:16:35.86\00:16:38.59 they would be raised from the dead after they... 00:16:38.59\00:16:41.63 at appropriate time, 00:16:42.80\00:16:44.70 but in this case, now you have a community being raised, 00:16:44.70\00:16:49.77 so the covenantal community of those 00:16:50.91\00:16:53.07 who are the children of God. 00:16:53.07\00:16:55.18 And this community will be raised 00:16:56.24\00:16:59.31 when God will manifest Himself. 00:16:59.31\00:17:02.38 And together with the community, 00:17:02.38\00:17:05.15 Isaiah was putting himself as well. 00:17:05.15\00:17:08.69 So it broadens the concept of a resurrection 00:17:08.69\00:17:11.96 from an individual perspective 00:17:11.96\00:17:14.10 now to a broader communal co-perspective. 00:17:14.10\00:17:18.20 >>So we're broadening the idea here, 00:17:19.20\00:17:21.47 and I think we might even be able to broaden it 00:17:21.47\00:17:23.30 just a little bit more as we continue through this week on, 00:17:23.30\00:17:26.34 on, let's see--what day is this?--Thursday's lesson. 00:17:27.74\00:17:30.05 You go into Daniel, chapter 12, 00:17:30.05\00:17:32.55 and there's some interesting things. 00:17:32.55\00:17:33.82 There's actually quite a few interesting things 00:17:33.82\00:17:35.45 in Daniel, chapter 12 going on, 00:17:35.45\00:17:37.55 but we wanna focus specifically on the resurrection, 00:17:37.55\00:17:42.02 death and the resurrection. 00:17:42.02\00:17:43.46 But there's also some other interesting things 00:17:43.46\00:17:45.13 happening here in Revelation, chapter 12. 00:17:45.13\00:17:47.40 I'm gonna read verses 1 and 2. >>Daniel. 00:17:47.40\00:17:49.46 >>Pardon me, Daniel, chapter 12, thank you very much, 00:17:49.46\00:17:51.80 Daniel, chapter 12, verses 1 and 2. 00:17:51.80\00:17:54.44 Revelation 12 is good too. 00:17:54.44\00:17:55.80 You should read it. (Dr. Timm laughs) 00:17:55.80\00:17:57.17 But we're gonna look at Daniel, chapter 12 today. 00:17:57.17\00:17:59.61 It says, "And at that time Michael shall stand up, 00:17:59.61\00:18:02.44 the great prince who stands 00:18:02.44\00:18:04.51 watch over the sons of your people; 00:18:04.51\00:18:06.88 and there shall be a time of trouble, 00:18:06.88\00:18:08.62 such as never was since there was a nation, 00:18:08.62\00:18:11.52 even to that time. 00:18:11.52\00:18:13.29 And at that time your people shall be delivered, 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.72 every one who is found written in the book." 00:18:15.72\00:18:19.36 Then verse 2 says, "And many of those 00:18:19.36\00:18:21.90 who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, 00:18:21.90\00:18:25.10 some to everlasting life, 00:18:25.10\00:18:27.57 some to shame and everlasting contempt." 00:18:27.57\00:18:31.64 So let's deal first with these resurrections, 00:18:31.64\00:18:35.18 "some to everlasting life" 00:18:35.18\00:18:36.88 and "some to shame and everlasting contempt." 00:18:36.88\00:18:39.81 It sounds like now this concept of the resurrection 00:18:39.81\00:18:42.95 is getting broader still. 00:18:42.95\00:18:45.39 >>Yes, because, as we mentioned before, 00:18:45.39\00:18:49.22 we had individuals having the hope 00:18:49.22\00:18:53.33 for the resurrection, and then comes a community. 00:18:53.33\00:18:57.20 And, of course, in Isaiah the idea would be really 00:18:58.57\00:19:02.54 that the wicked would not have everlasting life, 00:19:02.54\00:19:06.01 only those who would be raised, those who were with God. 00:19:06.01\00:19:09.44 But now it becomes clearer, even this picture. 00:19:09.44\00:19:12.51 So it's an unfolding scenario 00:19:12.51\00:19:15.92 where you have now both 00:19:15.92\00:19:19.22 the righteous and the unrighteous being raised. 00:19:19.22\00:19:24.29 Of course, once--I mean, the group of the righteous 00:19:25.66\00:19:27.66 to receive everlasting life 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.43 and then the other group without everlasting life... 00:19:30.43\00:19:35.04 to be punished. 00:19:36.20\00:19:37.61 So this concept that is already much in place 00:19:37.61\00:19:40.91 in the book of Daniel is far more unfolded, 00:19:40.91\00:19:45.61 even more, in the teachings of Jesus, in the gospels, 00:19:45.61\00:19:49.82 and especially in the book of Revelation. 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.82 You remember that the book of Revelation and Daniel, 00:19:51.82\00:19:55.42 that they fit together. 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.53 In other words, many of the topics or the subjects 00:19:57.53\00:20:01.83 of the book of Revelation 00:20:01.83\00:20:03.57 are something, they have their roots, 00:20:04.67\00:20:07.37 are rooted in the book of Daniel. 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.94 >>So ultimately even the wicked are going to be resurrected, 00:20:11.27\00:20:13.94 and there is, of course, a purpose for that. 00:20:13.94\00:20:16.85 They're given an opportunity to acknowledge the fact 00:20:16.85\00:20:19.98 that God is good and that He gave them every opportunity 00:20:19.98\00:20:22.42 to be saved, and that ultimately they squandered it, 00:20:22.42\00:20:25.02 which is a sign of a very loving God, a very caring God, 00:20:25.02\00:20:28.89 and one evidence that needs to be presented 00:20:28.89\00:20:31.89 before the universe that God's plan was right 00:20:31.89\00:20:34.46 and the adversary's plan was wrong. 00:20:34.46\00:20:36.30 But that's a bit of a diversion on to a much deeper 00:20:36.30\00:20:39.60 and incredible subject. Let's take another short diversion 00:20:39.60\00:20:44.01 here in Daniel, chapter 12 and verse number 1. 00:20:44.01\00:20:48.11 It talks about Michael. Who is Michael here? 00:20:48.11\00:20:52.41 >>Oh, there is a tendency to identify Michael 00:20:53.82\00:20:57.39 just as an angelic being, 00:20:57.39\00:21:00.09 because the word "archangel" used elsewhere in the Bible, 00:21:00.09\00:21:04.99 so he would be just a angel. 00:21:05.79\00:21:07.96 But be careful with this because "the angel of the Lord" 00:21:07.96\00:21:12.47 in some instances refers to the Lord Himself 00:21:12.47\00:21:15.37 because the word "angel" means "a messenger," 00:21:15.37\00:21:18.77 so in this case He would be the chief messenger. 00:21:18.77\00:21:21.81 But I think that the best way is to allow the book of Daniel 00:21:21.81\00:21:25.31 to answer this question. 00:21:25.31\00:21:27.12 And you have, for instance, in Daniel 8:11, 00:21:28.38\00:21:32.99 you have the reference to "the Prince of the hosts." 00:21:34.39\00:21:38.03 Then you go to chapter 8, verse 25, 00:21:38.03\00:21:43.06 "the Prince of Princes." 00:21:43.83\00:21:45.20 And then there is a crucial one in Daniel 9:25, 00:21:46.57\00:21:50.31 "Messiah the Prince." So when it speaks about the Prince, 00:21:50.31\00:21:55.28 it speaks here about the Messiah as being a prince. 00:21:56.75\00:22:00.68 And then comes definitely the passage that you read, Eric. 00:22:02.05\00:22:03.59 And this is chapter 12, verse 1 that speaks about 00:22:03.59\00:22:07.82 "Michael the Great Prince." I would not consider 00:22:07.82\00:22:12.89 that there would be another angelic being 00:22:14.00\00:22:16.87 that would be greater-- 00:22:16.87\00:22:19.10 I mean, would be called a great prince, 00:22:19.10\00:22:22.14 that would be greater than the Messiah the Prince. 00:22:22.14\00:22:26.61 So then we have plenty of evidences 00:22:26.61\00:22:28.71 that really, it applies to Christ Himself, 00:22:28.71\00:22:33.42 and especially for one reason: 00:22:33.42\00:22:35.62 You will see that the prophet time periods-- 00:22:35.62\00:22:38.52 oh, I'd better say, the prophetic element of Daniel, 00:22:38.52\00:22:43.59 the prophecies, the visions of Daniel, 00:22:44.69\00:22:46.96 they have always a climax 00:22:46.96\00:22:49.00 with the manifestation of Christ and His kingdom. 00:22:49.00\00:22:53.13 You have in chapter 2 the Stone, then you have there 00:22:53.13\00:22:57.31 the Son of Man you have in chapter 7, 00:22:57.31\00:23:01.28 you have later on in chapter 8 the Prince, 00:23:01.28\00:23:04.78 and now you have Michael the Great Prince. 00:23:04.78\00:23:08.08 If you would say that the climax of chapter 11 00:23:08.08\00:23:12.02 that continues into chapter 12, this would not be Christ, 00:23:12.02\00:23:16.96 then you have to deny the other ones as well 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.56 because one of the main characteristics of Daniel 00:23:19.56\00:23:23.87 is the repetition to amplify the concepts. 00:23:23.87\00:23:28.94 So I think that we have plenty of evidences to believe 00:23:30.24\00:23:32.81 that this is Christ. When He will manifest Himself, 00:23:32.81\00:23:36.01 He will then raise people from the grave. 00:23:36.01\00:23:40.88 >>And you're referencing a favorite passage of mine, 00:23:40.88\00:23:44.19 and, I think, a favorite passage of many Christians, 00:23:44.19\00:23:46.22 over in 1 Thessalonians, chapter 4 in verse number 16. 00:23:46.22\00:23:51.06 In 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 16, it says, 00:23:51.06\00:23:53.53 "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.90 shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet 00:23:57.90\00:24:01.27 of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." 00:24:01.27\00:24:04.47 So here it references the Lord Himself; 00:24:04.47\00:24:06.51 it talks about the archangel and the dead in Christ rising. 00:24:06.51\00:24:09.48 Now, just to clarify, neither you nor I are suggesting 00:24:09.48\00:24:13.48 that Jesus is an angel in the sense of a created being 00:24:13.48\00:24:16.79 with the wings and so forth, 00:24:16.79\00:24:19.05 but He is described as an archangel, 00:24:19.05\00:24:22.76 as the the chief of the host, the head of the angels, 00:24:22.76\00:24:26.49 not a created being, 00:24:26.49\00:24:27.60 correct? >>Exactly. 00:24:27.60\00:24:29.23 And He is the messenger also of the Godhead. 00:24:29.23\00:24:33.23 He's an absolute God. 00:24:33.23\00:24:35.64 And the one that speaks much of the revelation of the Bible, 00:24:35.64\00:24:40.01 was done by Christ. He revealed Himself many times. 00:24:40.01\00:24:44.48 >>Excellent. 00:24:44.48\00:24:46.11 Let's come back to this idea of who we are, 00:24:46.11\00:24:50.75 the complexity of the human being and the resurrection, 00:24:50.75\00:24:54.62 and how that all kind of comes together. 00:24:54.62\00:24:56.19 I wanna look briefly at Psalm 139, verses 13 and 14. 00:24:56.19\00:25:00.86 And unfortunately we don't have a lot of time 00:25:00.86\00:25:02.43 to look at this, but verse 13 says, 00:25:02.43\00:25:05.03 "For You formed my inward parts; 00:25:05.03\00:25:07.04 You covered me in my mother's womb. 00:25:07.04\00:25:09.04 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.87 marvelous are Your works, 00:25:12.87\00:25:14.38 and that my soul knows very well." 00:25:14.38\00:25:18.41 We are very complex beings, 00:25:18.41\00:25:20.25 and yet God is able to raise us up. 00:25:20.25\00:25:23.49 >>Well, sorry for the IT people 00:25:24.55\00:25:28.19 that really are so much fascinated with computers 00:25:28.19\00:25:31.49 and technology and the cyber world 00:25:31.49\00:25:35.16 and whatever else you want to add to it, 00:25:35.16\00:25:37.80 but there is no machine that we have developed 00:25:37.80\00:25:42.10 as human beings that is as complex as the human body. 00:25:42.10\00:25:47.18 And I am referring especially to the human brain. 00:25:48.41\00:25:51.11 There are many studies that have been done in this area, 00:25:51.11\00:25:54.52 scientific ones, trying to explain what it is. 00:25:54.52\00:25:57.69 And to start with, not even you can explain what is life. 00:25:57.69\00:26:02.09 We accept it as for granted. 00:26:02.09\00:26:04.99 And so, from my perspective, at least, 00:26:04.99\00:26:08.30 I believe that it would be quite something awkward, 00:26:08.30\00:26:12.30 or whatever you want to say, 00:26:12.30\00:26:14.70 to believe that some complex form of life-- 00:26:14.70\00:26:19.71 as you are and as I am with all the systems 00:26:19.71\00:26:24.31 and whatever you want to add to it, 00:26:24.31\00:26:26.61 and we don't know us completely--would be 00:26:27.75\00:26:30.62 just built to last for a few years. 00:26:30.62\00:26:35.36 I think that there is something else, 00:26:36.49\00:26:37.96 even from a existential perspective, 00:26:37.96\00:26:40.86 I think that human beings are such-- 00:26:40.86\00:26:42.96 we are not really made just to live this life. 00:26:42.96\00:26:47.50 But the hope that is in our, 00:26:47.50\00:26:50.54 that we find in the Old Testament, 00:26:50.54\00:26:52.51 and as well as in the New Testament, shows 00:26:52.51\00:26:55.71 how valuably we are created in God's own image and likeness 00:26:55.71\00:27:00.32 and to live for eternity. 00:27:00.32\00:27:02.92 There is even a passage that says 00:27:02.92\00:27:04.52 that God "has put eternity in [our] hearts." So... 00:27:04.52\00:27:09.59 >>So if God has put eternity in our hearts, 00:27:10.66\00:27:13.06 that means that He wants us looking forward to eternity. 00:27:13.06\00:27:15.46 And the only way that we can do that 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.37 is if we have a relationship with Jesus. 00:27:17.37\00:27:20.04 And I hope that during the course of these lessons 00:27:20.04\00:27:22.70 that we've been going through, your relationship with Jesus 00:27:22.70\00:27:25.67 has strengthened and deepened, 00:27:25.67\00:27:28.24 and that you've made a decision to let Him be your Savior 00:27:28.24\00:27:31.71 and the King of your life. 00:27:31.71\00:27:33.31 If you haven't yet, well, it's not too late. 00:27:33.31\00:27:36.58 But when we come back, 00:27:36.58\00:27:37.92 we're gonna look at lesson number 5 00:27:37.92\00:27:39.79 as we continue looking at this interesting subject, 00:27:39.79\00:27:42.12 "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:27:42.12\00:27:44.99 because that hope lies in Jesus, 00:27:44.99\00:27:48.23 the only One who can give us hope. 00:27:48.23\00:27:50.00 We'll see you next time. God bless you. 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.60 (gentle uplifting theme music) 00:27:52.60\00:27:56.60 (music ends) 00:28:25.37\00:28:27.74
