(inspirational theme music) 00:00:00.80\00:00:05.30 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.27\00:00:14.41 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.41\00:00:16.41 We're delighted to have you with us again this week 00:00:16.41\00:00:18.98 as we take a journey through the subject of "Death, 00:00:18.98\00:00:22.28 Dying, and the Future Hope," and we're gonna spend 00:00:22.28\00:00:25.42 a lot of time as we continue through this quarter 00:00:25.42\00:00:28.19 focusing on that future hope. 00:00:28.19\00:00:29.92 But we're just getting started now. This is week number 2, 00:00:29.92\00:00:32.13 and we are looking at "Death in a Sinful World." 00:00:32.13\00:00:35.16 We're grateful to be able to have the author 00:00:35.16\00:00:37.13 of this quarter's Sabbath school lesson with us; 00:00:37.13\00:00:39.87 that's Dr. Alberto Timm; 00:00:39.87\00:00:41.37 he's an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:41.37\00:00:44.71 Alberto, welcome. We're glad that you're with us today. 00:00:44.71\00:00:47.44 >>I'm very pleased to be with you as well. 00:00:47.44\00:00:50.18 >>So we're starting now. We're kind of getting up to speed, 00:00:50.18\00:00:54.35 and already we're dealing with sin. 00:00:54.35\00:00:56.58 In fact, last week we talked about how God created 00:00:56.58\00:00:59.79 a perfect world, a perfect universe, 00:00:59.79\00:01:02.62 and then sin came. 00:01:02.62\00:01:06.16 You know, the adversary--well, Lucifer-- 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.86 chose to rebel against God, and sin came into existence. 00:01:08.86\00:01:13.00 God didn't create it, 00:01:13.00\00:01:14.04 but Lucifer made a choice and became Satan. 00:01:14.04\00:01:17.07 Now we come down to earth, and it gets a little bit more, 00:01:17.07\00:01:20.51 I guess you might call, personal 00:01:20.51\00:01:22.81 when Satan deceives Eve. What, how did this all work? 00:01:22.81\00:01:27.88 How was he successful in deceiving Eve? 00:01:28.95\00:01:32.25 What was kind of the psychology 00:01:32.25\00:01:33.99 that he used in order to get her to depart 00:01:33.99\00:01:38.33 from the perfect path and to head the wrong direction? 00:01:38.33\00:01:42.20 >>Genesis, chapter 3 is a very fascinating 00:01:44.00\00:01:48.44 chapter, fascinating in the sense of the content, 00:01:48.44\00:01:52.27 but tragic in regard to the consequences. 00:01:52.27\00:01:56.21 And it's interesting that we have a contrast 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.41 between the word of God in chapter 2, 00:01:59.41\00:02:04.39 where God said that in the day that you will eat 00:02:05.72\00:02:08.72 from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, 00:02:08.72\00:02:13.80 "You will die." 00:02:14.30\00:02:15.40 And then comes later on the serpent and says, 00:02:15.40\00:02:17.83 "No, you will not die." 00:02:17.83\00:02:20.67 So there was a tension between these two, 00:02:20.67\00:02:23.71 and it's clear from chapter 3 00:02:23.71\00:02:27.31 that Eve understood very well 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.94 God's command or God's prohibition 00:02:29.94\00:02:32.88 not to eat from the tree. But then comes the serpent. 00:02:32.88\00:02:37.72 And, of course, you have in mind 00:02:37.72\00:02:39.22 that a serpent actually is a medium, just, 00:02:39.22\00:02:43.89 because in Revelation 12, it speaks of the serpent, 00:02:43.89\00:02:47.93 the old serpent as being the devil, Satan, 00:02:47.93\00:02:51.13 and so on and so forth, in regard to identify the serpent. 00:02:51.13\00:02:55.77 But then comes the serpent, 00:02:55.77\00:02:57.94 and it's very interesting from my perspective, 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.71 at least the psychology behind it, 00:03:00.71\00:03:03.68 how the serpent was able 00:03:03.68\00:03:07.35 to mislead, misguide Eve, 00:03:07.35\00:03:11.32 and first the serpent used generalization. 00:03:11.32\00:03:16.39 "You [should] not eat [from any fruit] of the garden." Okay. 00:03:17.73\00:03:21.93 And then Eve came and decided to give a Bible study 00:03:23.20\00:03:26.74 to the serpent, so to say, no, God stated this: 00:03:26.74\00:03:31.27 We should eat, we can eat from all the trees, 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.84 except for this one, this specific one. 00:03:33.84\00:03:37.21 And we know that the serpent was there 00:03:37.21\00:03:39.65 trying to convince Eve to eat. 00:03:39.65\00:03:42.78 And then the second one, 00:03:43.72\00:03:46.45 the second stage is that the serpent decided then 00:03:46.45\00:03:51.36 to contradict, first to generalize, 00:03:51.36\00:03:55.70 then later on to contradict God's word, 00:03:55.70\00:03:59.63 say, "No, God even knows..." 00:03:59.63\00:04:02.57 And then the third stage, 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.84 and that is a very significant one, is that serpent 00:04:05.84\00:04:10.75 offered better knowledge 00:04:10.75\00:04:15.38 and accused God of suppressing truth. 00:04:15.38\00:04:18.85 Gods know that you will be able-- 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.82 "God knows that you will be able 00:04:21.82\00:04:23.59 to understand good and evil, but He's suppressed truth." 00:04:23.59\00:04:28.00 So in other words, "He wants you to follow 00:04:28.00\00:04:31.37 just what He has to teach and nothing else." 00:04:31.37\00:04:35.67 And that was the disaster really. 00:04:35.67\00:04:39.01 So the serpent knew exactly the way to go 00:04:39.01\00:04:42.34 within these three steps. 00:04:42.34\00:04:43.85 And this is basically what is repeating today 00:04:43.85\00:04:46.92 in our history as well when temptation comes. 00:04:46.92\00:04:51.45 >>So he had a strategy, he executed that strategy, 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.22 and unfortunately for all of us, Eve bit. I mean, 00:04:54.22\00:04:58.46 her first mistake was to engage him in conversation. 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.46 She shouldn't even have talked to him 00:05:01.46\00:05:03.80 or talked with him or listened to what he had to say. 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.60 But as you mentioned, 00:05:06.60\00:05:08.14 she engaged him in a Bible study, as it were. 00:05:08.14\00:05:11.17 And that was a terrible mistake for her. 00:05:11.17\00:05:13.71 When Eve did enter into this conversation, 00:05:14.74\00:05:18.78 what criteria did she use to choose 00:05:20.72\00:05:25.52 whether to believe God or the serpent? 00:05:25.52\00:05:29.79 What, how did she make a decision one way or the other? 00:05:29.79\00:05:32.69 What was her thought process? 00:05:32.69\00:05:35.76 >>Well, it's interesting that we should, first of all, 00:05:37.07\00:05:39.57 not to defend God. I mean, 00:05:39.57\00:05:43.47 when we are already in temptation-- 00:05:43.47\00:05:45.47 we should avoid temptation, 00:05:45.47\00:05:47.11 but unfortunately Eve really exposed herself. 00:05:47.11\00:05:51.25 And so to say, 00:05:52.58\00:05:53.88 I don't want to paint 00:05:53.88\00:05:58.25 a negative picture of the scientific method, 00:05:58.25\00:06:01.66 because the scientific method we use to many thing, 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.26 but when it comes to temptation and to the word of God, 00:06:04.26\00:06:07.83 it's not always the best criteria. 00:06:07.83\00:06:10.80 But actually the serpent tempted Eve. 00:06:10.80\00:06:14.20 And Eve used the empirical method, 00:06:14.20\00:06:17.74 the scientific method of observation. 00:06:17.74\00:06:20.74 And so she realized that first of all, 00:06:20.74\00:06:23.71 the fruit was nutritious, 00:06:24.78\00:06:29.58 and that was one of the criteria, 00:06:30.45\00:06:32.79 so from a dietary perspective, why should she avoid it? 00:06:32.79\00:06:37.63 The second one would be from the aesthetical viewpoint. 00:06:37.63\00:06:41.66 It was really very beautiful, attractive, the fruit. 00:06:41.66\00:06:46.57 Entered from a nutritional perspective, 00:06:46.57\00:06:50.01 it was good for health. 00:06:50.01\00:06:53.48 So let's suppose that we were there at that time 00:06:53.48\00:06:56.54 or that the tree of knowledge would be in our days. 00:06:56.54\00:07:00.48 Let's suppose that we would take one of the fruits 00:07:00.48\00:07:04.02 and take to the best lab 00:07:04.02\00:07:08.72 of chemical analysis, whether here in Chattanooga 00:07:08.72\00:07:12.93 or in another place where you are living, 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.70 and you would ask the fruit to be analyzed. 00:07:15.70\00:07:19.40 Definitely, the results would be, 00:07:19.40\00:07:22.40 "This is extremely nutritious food or fruit. 00:07:22.40\00:07:27.48 "There is no poison. 00:07:28.14\00:07:29.61 We recommend that you should eat in a daily basis." 00:07:29.61\00:07:34.05 But what was Eve's mistake? 00:07:34.05\00:07:37.22 Actually, she did not realize the symbols of religion. 00:07:38.52\00:07:43.26 There are things that are not intrinsic 00:07:44.33\00:07:46.33 or in themselves bad, 00:07:46.33\00:07:49.70 but God put them aside as a test of obedience. 00:07:49.70\00:07:54.44 And this was precisely the case. 00:07:54.44\00:07:57.27 The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil 00:07:57.27\00:08:00.88 was not poisoned; it was nutritious. 00:08:00.88\00:08:04.41 But it was placed over there by God as a test 00:08:04.41\00:08:08.48 to see if Eve would really trust 00:08:08.48\00:08:12.79 His word or the word of God 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.32 or would follow the word of the serpent. 00:08:15.32\00:08:19.56 And let me just add another point, Eric. 00:08:19.56\00:08:22.96 And this is from a scientific perspective, 00:08:22.96\00:08:27.30 from a empirical stand of view; you would see that the word 00:08:27.30\00:08:32.01 of the serpent was much more logical 00:08:32.01\00:08:36.18 than the word of God. First of all, there was no death. 00:08:36.18\00:08:40.62 People did not know of that. 00:08:40.62\00:08:43.28 So why would they die? 00:08:43.28\00:08:45.82 Secondly, I think that we have some evidences, 00:08:45.82\00:08:48.22 and at least Ellen White says that 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.56 the serpent was even eating 00:08:50.56\00:08:53.33 from the fruit and saying, "Well, I am not dying." 00:08:53.33\00:08:57.23 So all evidence is backed up the word 00:08:57.23\00:09:01.40 of the serpent and not the word of God. 00:09:01.40\00:09:04.07 So remember, not everything that is logical is truth, 00:09:04.07\00:09:08.91 and not everything that's true is logical 00:09:08.91\00:09:11.91 from a spiritual perspective. 00:09:11.91\00:09:14.92 >>You bring up an interesting point. 00:09:14.92\00:09:17.62 God said, when He spoke of the fruit, 00:09:18.95\00:09:21.56 He said, "In the day that you eat of it, 00:09:21.56\00:09:23.83 you will surely die." 00:09:23.83\00:09:26.06 And the adversary says, "You will not surely die." 00:09:26.06\00:09:29.23 And Eve and Adam both ate the fruit, 00:09:29.23\00:09:32.23 and they didn't die that day. 00:09:32.23\00:09:34.84 So someone might, from a third person perspective, 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.34 look at this and say, "Well, 00:09:38.34\00:09:39.41 "it sounds to me like the devil knew 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.04 what he was talking about, and God didn't," 00:09:41.04\00:09:43.11 but I have a sneaking suspicion that's not exactly the case. 00:09:43.11\00:09:47.05 >>Yah, this is a very interesting question 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.65 because some people ask and have doubts, saying, 00:09:49.65\00:09:53.02 well, in this case, they would even justify the word of 00:09:53.02\00:09:56.56 the serpent, saying, "Well, God actually lied to Eve." 00:09:56.56\00:10:01.60 But we have to keep in mind something. 00:10:02.70\00:10:04.73 Although they did not cease to exist 00:10:04.73\00:10:08.40 that very same day, but that very same day, 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.87 that very same moment, they received the death sentence. 00:10:11.87\00:10:15.91 But from my perspective, I understand that God's mercy 00:10:15.91\00:10:20.92 intervened and extended the life 00:10:20.92\00:10:25.22 of Adam and Eve, although being already guilty, 00:10:25.22\00:10:29.82 having the death sentence there upon them 00:10:29.82\00:10:32.89 and the dying process already started, not only for them, 00:10:32.89\00:10:36.87 but for the whole creation. 00:10:36.87\00:10:39.43 But I think that was an act of the mercy of, 00:10:39.43\00:10:43.27 act of mercy from God's part to extend their existence. 00:10:44.74\00:10:49.11 >>So I think you've already kind of touched on this, 00:10:50.55\00:10:52.21 but I want to draw it out just a little bit more. 00:10:52.21\00:10:54.15 Eve made the decision to engage the serpent in conversation. 00:10:54.15\00:10:58.52 She used logical reasoning to go through this process, 00:10:58.52\00:11:03.12 and unfortunately it led her to a poor decision. 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.06 Talk a little bit more 00:11:07.50\00:11:08.56 about the consequences of that decision. 00:11:08.56\00:11:11.60 What ultimately did that lead to? 00:11:11.60\00:11:13.94 >>Well, the Bible is very clear that that was the origin 00:11:15.47\00:11:19.71 of death here, for our, at least... 00:11:19.71\00:11:24.75 life as we know here on this earth. And this is really 00:11:26.31\00:11:29.98 the place where the scenario of the great controversy-- 00:11:29.98\00:11:34.26 but at the same time, you will see several points. 00:11:34.26\00:11:37.53 And this is the richness, 00:11:37.53\00:11:41.10 I think, of Genesis, chapter 3. 00:11:41.10\00:11:43.63 We will not be able to read the passages, 00:11:43.63\00:11:45.77 but you can read it later on for yourself. First of all... 00:11:45.77\00:11:49.54 they hided themselves. 00:11:50.67\00:11:54.01 So there was something that probably 00:11:54.01\00:11:56.61 we could call theophobia or whatever you want, 00:11:56.61\00:12:01.32 the fear of God; they were afraid of God. 00:12:01.32\00:12:04.75 And that generated all the other fears that we have. 00:12:04.75\00:12:08.82 Then later on, from a psychosocial perspective, 00:12:08.82\00:12:12.33 they began to accuse each other. And you remember 00:12:12.33\00:12:16.80 finally the guilt was even put on God. 00:12:16.80\00:12:20.67 And it started in this way: 00:12:20.67\00:12:22.57 "Well, yes, it was not I, myself, 00:12:22.57\00:12:26.88 Adam; it was Eve." 00:12:27.88\00:12:29.41 And Eve said, "Well, but the serpent misled me." 00:12:29.41\00:12:32.08 And so it went, and later on you will see that pain, 00:12:32.08\00:12:36.22 suffering from a physical perspective, 00:12:36.22\00:12:38.49 also took over the human body, 00:12:38.49\00:12:42.19 and even the ecosystem, 00:12:42.19\00:12:45.19 nature from a ecological perspective, 00:12:45.19\00:12:47.76 even Adam and Eve, who were the rulers 00:12:47.76\00:12:51.80 of the garden; the garden was deteriorated also 00:12:51.80\00:12:56.07 through the sin of Adam and Eve. 00:12:56.07\00:12:58.44 >>So really everything that is surrounding us 00:12:58.44\00:13:01.71 today was tainted because of this decision. 00:13:01.71\00:13:05.25 So we wanna make sure that we don't echo that decision 00:13:05.25\00:13:08.15 that Eve made in our lives today. 00:13:08.15\00:13:11.32 We're gonna take a short break, 00:13:11.32\00:13:12.45 but before we do, I wanna encourage you, 00:13:12.45\00:13:14.29 if you haven't stopped by the It Is Written shop 00:13:14.29\00:13:17.19 and picked up the companion book 00:13:17.19\00:13:19.13 to this quarter's lesson, you'll want to do that. 00:13:19.13\00:13:21.40 It's called "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:13:21.40\00:13:24.23 The author, of course, is Dr. Alberto Timm; 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.33 he's our guest here on Sabbath School today. 00:13:26.33\00:13:28.70 But if you want to pick that up, 00:13:28.70\00:13:30.27 you can go to itiswritten.shop, 00:13:30.27\00:13:33.38 again, that's itiswritten.shop, 00:13:33.38\00:13:35.11 pick up the companion book 00:13:35.11\00:13:36.71 to this study, "On Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:13:36.71\00:13:40.22 and you will gain even more through this quarter. 00:13:40.22\00:13:43.72 We'll be back in just a couple of minutes 00:13:43.72\00:13:45.95 as we continue looking at the subject 00:13:45.95\00:13:48.19 of "Death in a Sinful World." And so on. 00:16:17.77\00:16:20.84 And then later on you have the outcome. 00:16:20.84\00:16:25.05 God pronounces a promise. 00:16:25.05\00:16:28.55 You remember, first a promise, 00:16:28.55\00:16:30.55 and then later on the sentence to them. 00:16:30.55\00:16:33.76 >>So He shares this promise in this sentence. 00:16:35.06\00:16:37.39 And I wanna focus in here on part of that promise. 00:16:37.39\00:16:41.60 It's a significant one 00:16:41.60\00:16:42.66 in Genesis, chapter 3 and verse 15; 00:16:42.66\00:16:45.03 there are some interesting words and implications here. 00:16:45.03\00:16:47.44 So I wanna kind of pull this out. Genesis 3, verse 15. 00:16:47.44\00:16:50.94 God says that "I will put enmity between you 00:16:50.94\00:16:53.91 and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; 00:16:53.91\00:16:57.11 He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." 00:16:57.11\00:17:02.18 What is the significance of this verse? 00:17:03.15\00:17:05.65 What do you see 00:17:05.65\00:17:07.02 in this verse that can give us some hope and encouragement? 00:17:07.02\00:17:10.29 >>This is a key passage, 00:17:10.29\00:17:13.56 not only in the book of Genesis, 00:17:13.56\00:17:15.53 but I think for the whole Bible, within the whole Bible. 00:17:15.53\00:17:20.17 Actually here you have several elements. 00:17:20.17\00:17:23.14 First of all, you have enmity that is being promised. 00:17:23.14\00:17:28.21 And you might say, "Well, but this is just 00:17:29.24\00:17:31.31 something simple." No, this word is very significant. 00:17:31.31\00:17:36.38 Actually the fall of Adam and Eve was not a partial fall; 00:17:37.75\00:17:41.29 it was a complete fall. 00:17:41.29\00:17:43.66 But if they were completely alienated 00:17:44.73\00:17:47.50 from God and from the Holy Spirit, 00:17:47.50\00:17:50.50 how could they ever accept the call of salvation? 00:17:50.50\00:17:55.34 And here we have evidences that God 00:17:56.44\00:17:58.34 put in the human nature really this enmity; 00:17:58.34\00:18:01.58 that means that kind of natural, not natural, 00:18:01.58\00:18:06.65 but supernatural placed in the human mind, 00:18:07.68\00:18:10.49 the human being, of something that allows them 00:18:10.49\00:18:15.12 to accept the call of salvation. 00:18:15.12\00:18:19.79 And then you have here the messianic promise. 00:18:19.79\00:18:23.97 You have the conflict between the Seed, 00:18:23.97\00:18:27.44 or, so to say, the Messiah, Christ that would come. 00:18:27.44\00:18:31.37 And then you have also 00:18:31.37\00:18:33.21 the serpent itself standing for Satan. 00:18:33.21\00:18:37.41 So here you have the first promise of the gospel, 00:18:37.41\00:18:42.48 the protoevangelium or whatever you want to call it, 00:18:43.75\00:18:45.99 but the first promise of the gospel, 00:18:45.99\00:18:48.46 and this promise is very significant 00:18:48.46\00:18:51.79 because it speaks about a struggle 00:18:51.79\00:18:55.50 between good and evil throughout history, 00:18:55.50\00:18:59.57 and finally the Seed, or the Messiah, 00:18:59.57\00:19:03.51 would triumph over the serpent. 00:19:03.51\00:19:08.58 So God's plan of salvation will triumph. 00:19:09.58\00:19:12.55 And this is a word of hope. 00:19:12.55\00:19:14.72 And just keep in mind that this promise 00:19:14.72\00:19:17.82 of salvation, of the gospel, 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.69 the first promise of the gospel in the Old Testament 00:19:19.69\00:19:24.76 antecedes the curses that followed, 00:19:25.79\00:19:28.70 or the punishment that God had to do to the sin 00:19:28.70\00:19:33.70 of, or the fall of, Adam and Eve. 00:19:33.70\00:19:36.77 >>So even though there was bad news, 00:19:36.77\00:19:39.21 there was certainly a lot of good news there as well, 00:19:39.21\00:19:42.74 fantastic news, really, for all humanity. 00:19:42.74\00:19:46.38 There's also one other element here 00:19:46.38\00:19:49.18 in Genesis, chapter 3, that I find interesting. 00:19:49.18\00:19:52.72 In Revelation, chapter--pardon me, 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.62 in Genesis, chapter 3, verse 21, 00:19:54.62\00:19:57.49 it says, "Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made 00:19:57.49\00:20:01.53 tunics of skin, and clothed them." 00:20:01.53\00:20:05.83 There's some implications, 00:20:05.83\00:20:08.00 some assumptions here that I think we can safely make. 00:20:08.00\00:20:12.21 One of them is that God did not 00:20:12.21\00:20:13.94 speak these tunics into existence. 00:20:13.94\00:20:17.25 They didn't just miraculously appear on Adam and Eve. 00:20:17.25\00:20:21.65 They came from somewhere, and there's significance to that. 00:20:21.65\00:20:24.65 What is that? 00:20:24.65\00:20:25.99 Where'd they come from, and why is that significant? 00:20:25.99\00:20:28.39 >>Some scholars have recognized 00:20:28.39\00:20:30.73 that this is the first reference 00:20:30.73\00:20:33.70 to a sacrifice, animal sacrifice, 00:20:33.70\00:20:37.30 because they are not just tunics. 00:20:37.30\00:20:40.17 They are made of skin, and to make out of skin, 00:20:40.17\00:20:44.57 you have to kill the animal to take off the skin 00:20:44.57\00:20:48.28 and then to use it the way you want. 00:20:48.28\00:20:51.91 So, then you have another element over there... 00:20:51.91\00:20:56.69 is that they clothed them. 00:20:58.22\00:21:02.62 This word in Hebrew, at least some scholars say that 00:21:02.62\00:21:06.06 this word is usually used 00:21:06.06\00:21:09.66 just for kings, 00:21:09.66\00:21:12.13 the clothing of kings and priests. 00:21:12.13\00:21:16.04 In this case, the idea of a priest, 00:21:16.04\00:21:20.38 or the priesthood, here is very significant. 00:21:20.38\00:21:24.58 And this was the beginning of the sacrificial system. 00:21:24.58\00:21:28.58 I don't think that it started there with... 00:21:28.58\00:21:33.36 Abel, but you have evidence here of it. 00:21:33.36\00:21:37.06 So God not only promised, 00:21:37.06\00:21:39.89 or made the speech promising the gospel, 00:21:39.89\00:21:44.03 in verse 15, but here in verse 21, 00:21:44.03\00:21:48.40 He actually illustrated it 00:21:48.40\00:21:51.14 through this idea of a substitution. 00:21:51.14\00:21:54.91 They had to die. 00:21:54.91\00:21:56.71 The death sentence was given them at the very same day, 00:21:58.18\00:22:02.92 although their life was spared; 00:22:03.72\00:22:06.22 they continue to live because 00:22:06.22\00:22:08.46 of the merciful intervention of God, 00:22:08.46\00:22:12.13 and sacrifices were a way to illustrate it. 00:22:12.13\00:22:16.06 You have to die, but in reality, 00:22:16.06\00:22:19.30 a substitute was provided. 00:22:20.30\00:22:23.07 And this is the idea of atoning sacrifice 00:22:23.07\00:22:27.24 in place of somebody else. 00:22:27.24\00:22:29.54 So not only theory, 00:22:29.54\00:22:31.71 but a practical illustration that would continue 00:22:31.71\00:22:35.22 throughout human history until the cross 00:22:35.22\00:22:38.19 when Christ as the Lamb of God 00:22:38.19\00:22:40.09 would offer Himself as a sacrifice. 00:22:40.09\00:22:43.66 >>So we're looking right here in Genesis, chapter 3, 00:22:43.66\00:22:45.69 at the first indication of, really, death. 00:22:45.69\00:22:49.80 But I wanna step back from this story 00:22:49.80\00:22:51.77 for just a moment and look 00:22:51.77\00:22:54.27 at another subject that does in fact interact with it. 00:22:54.27\00:22:57.17 And that's the theory of evolution. 00:22:57.17\00:23:00.18 How does--what challenges do we face 00:23:00.18\00:23:03.41 if we accept the ideas that are shared 00:23:03.41\00:23:08.38 through the theory of evolution? 00:23:08.38\00:23:09.85 Why does that cause a problem 00:23:09.85\00:23:10.92 with us in this story of death here? 00:23:10.92\00:23:13.25 >>Actually you have two models. 00:23:14.69\00:23:16.36 You have two ways of understanding 00:23:16.36\00:23:18.49 to read Genesis 1-11. 00:23:18.49\00:23:21.20 One of those is to take it 00:23:21.20\00:23:25.60 as a historical account. 00:23:25.60\00:23:28.60 And we have Bible evidences because all the later prophets 00:23:28.60\00:23:32.64 in the Old Testament, 00:23:32.64\00:23:34.01 and also the writers of the New Testament, 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.78 always refers to elements of Genesis 1-11, 00:23:36.78\00:23:41.28 including the Creation story, 00:23:41.28\00:23:44.52 the fall of Adam and Eve, the Flood also, 00:23:44.52\00:23:47.46 as historical literal accounts and not just symbolical ones. 00:23:47.46\00:23:52.43 But another reading is to consider them 00:23:52.43\00:23:55.00 just as allegory or whatever you want to call it. 00:23:55.00\00:23:58.63 And then some people reread Genesis, 00:23:58.63\00:24:02.20 especially Genesis 1, that 00:24:02.20\00:24:04.74 the days of Creation are not actual literal days, 00:24:04.74\00:24:08.64 but they are evolutionary process. 00:24:08.64\00:24:11.75 And one of the common ideas on this matter 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.88 is that within Christianity, 00:24:15.88\00:24:18.05 I mean, that there is a Creator, there is God, 00:24:18.05\00:24:20.62 but He used the evolutionary process 00:24:20.62\00:24:23.83 to create the world. If this is the case, 00:24:23.83\00:24:28.60 then we have to admit 00:24:28.60\00:24:30.80 that there was that prior to the fall of Adam and Eve. 00:24:30.80\00:24:35.47 And so the biblical concept as expressed here 00:24:35.47\00:24:39.14 and also by Paul and other Bible authors, 00:24:39.14\00:24:43.95 you will see that falls into, 00:24:43.95\00:24:47.12 becomes nonsense for one simple reason. 00:24:47.12\00:24:50.42 Then the primitive forms of life 00:24:50.42\00:24:53.56 already died before the fall of Adam and Eve. 00:24:53.56\00:24:58.03 And even in this case, even the commandment 00:24:58.03\00:25:01.26 of the Sabbath really does not make sense 00:25:01.26\00:25:03.93 because evolutionary eras 00:25:03.93\00:25:06.50 would not stand for the week ending with the Sabbath. 00:25:06.50\00:25:11.57 So in this case, I think that the Bible really is very clear 00:25:12.97\00:25:16.68 that there was no death prior to the fall of Adam and Eve. 00:25:18.05\00:25:21.68 And now we have the consequences of it. 00:25:21.68\00:25:24.79 >>Alberto, in the few minutes that we have left here, 00:25:26.09\00:25:28.46 what are some significant lessons 00:25:28.46\00:25:30.39 that we can learn from this story 00:25:30.39\00:25:31.96 about the temptation that Adam and Eve fell into? 00:25:31.96\00:25:35.23 How can we prevent ourselves, 00:25:35.23\00:25:38.00 or at least make it more challenging for ourselves, 00:25:38.00\00:25:40.44 to follow in those same footsteps? 00:25:40.44\00:25:43.71 >>Well, I believe that the form 00:25:43.71\00:25:47.31 can change, but the substance, or the essence, remains. 00:25:47.31\00:25:51.88 Temptation is always attractive-- 00:25:51.88\00:25:54.58 and is, to a certain extent, also convincing. 00:25:54.58\00:25:58.25 Otherwise nobody would fall into temptation, 00:25:58.25\00:26:01.59 and it sometimes appeals to our own pleasure. 00:26:01.59\00:26:06.66 I feel good about this. What is the problem? 00:26:07.73\00:26:10.23 And I think that one of those main lessons 00:26:10.23\00:26:13.74 is looking from a perspective here 00:26:13.74\00:26:17.17 of what Eve did. 00:26:17.17\00:26:19.87 It seems to be a very simple act. 00:26:19.87\00:26:23.11 What is the matter of just eating or not eating a fruit? 00:26:23.11\00:26:28.18 But had tragical consequences throughout human history. 00:26:29.52\00:26:32.62 So our actions, our decisions, 00:26:32.62\00:26:36.49 if we are rereading God's Word, of trying 00:26:36.49\00:26:41.16 to make the Bible say what I want to say 00:26:41.16\00:26:44.40 and not what it actually says 00:26:44.40\00:26:46.30 can have tragical consequences, 00:26:46.30\00:26:48.97 not only for the present life, 00:26:48.97\00:26:51.51 but even for the future and the life to come. 00:26:51.51\00:26:55.94 So I think that we have to take into consideration: 00:26:55.94\00:26:58.71 God's Word might not always be as logical as I expect, 00:26:58.71\00:27:03.55 but it's always reliable and the best way for us to go. 00:27:03.55\00:27:08.09 >>So the safe thing for us to do is to simply take God 00:27:08.09\00:27:10.66 at His word, trust Him. And it doesn't hurt to look back 00:27:10.66\00:27:14.23 at some examples of people who didn't do that 00:27:14.23\00:27:17.00 and the consequences that they had to to pay 00:27:17.00\00:27:19.47 and ultimately the consequences 00:27:19.47\00:27:21.20 that we have to pay as a result of it. 00:27:21.20\00:27:23.47 We are continuing our study next week through 00:27:23.47\00:27:26.71 the story of "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:27:26.71\00:27:30.91 looking at the significance of this subject, 00:27:30.91\00:27:33.55 the importance of it, 00:27:33.55\00:27:34.95 and the hope that comes from understanding it correctly. 00:27:34.95\00:27:38.52 So we trust that you've been blessed this week. 00:27:38.52\00:27:40.16 We'll be back again next week for lesson number 3 00:27:40.16\00:27:43.79 as we continue looking at this subject 00:27:43.79\00:27:46.39 that really impacts every last one of us. 00:27:46.39\00:27:50.77 We look forward to seeing you again next time 00:27:50.77\00:27:53.20 on "Sabbath School," brought to you by It Is Written. 00:27:53.20\00:27:56.60 (inspirational theme music) 00:27:56.60\00:28:00.81 (music ends) 00:28:26.77\00:28:28.94
