(inspirational theme music) 00:00:00.80\00:00:04.83 >>Welcome to "Sabbath School," 00:00:13.34\00:00:14.54 brought to you by It Is Written. 00:00:14.54\00:00:16.64 We're delighted to have you with us, 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.51 as we begin a brand new quarter, 00:00:18.51\00:00:20.85 and the subject that we're looking at this quarter 00:00:20.85\00:00:23.72 is a fascinating one. 00:00:23.72\00:00:25.72 It is one about which there is 00:00:25.72\00:00:27.22 a great deal of misunderstanding. 00:00:27.22\00:00:30.19 There is some apprehension, and yet 00:00:30.19\00:00:32.73 there's also a lot of peace and encouragement. 00:00:32.73\00:00:35.70 This quarter, we're looking at the subject 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.17 of "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope." 00:00:37.17\00:00:40.50 And here on our "Sabbath School" program, 00:00:40.50\00:00:42.70 we are delighted to have the author 00:00:42.70\00:00:44.57 of this quarter's lesson, Dr. Alberto Timm. 00:00:44.57\00:00:47.58 He is an associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate. 00:00:47.58\00:00:52.38 Dr. Timm, welcome. We're delighted to have you with us. 00:00:52.38\00:00:55.75 >>I am very delighted to be with you. 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.79 It's a pleasure for me to be able to join you. 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.86 >>So this is an interesting subject, the subject of death. 00:01:00.86\00:01:04.63 A lot of people wonder about it. 00:01:04.63\00:01:06.36 A lot of people worry about it. 00:01:06.36\00:01:08.13 A lot of people feel that they've pretty well got it down 00:01:08.13\00:01:11.30 and understand it and have it all figured out and so forth, 00:01:11.30\00:01:15.07 and yet it is a subject that we wanna spend some time on 00:01:15.07\00:01:18.97 because even when we think we've got it all figured out, 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.31 there may be some things for us to learn and maybe 00:01:21.31\00:01:24.85 some things that we could share with others, as well. 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.72 So give us an idea of kind of the scope 00:01:27.72\00:01:30.02 of where we're going to be going this quarter. 00:01:30.02\00:01:32.12 We've got 13 weeks ahead of us, 13 lessons, 00:01:32.12\00:01:35.92 13 studies on this subject. 00:01:35.92\00:01:37.53 What are some things that we're going to be covering, 00:01:37.53\00:01:40.40 and why is this so important? 00:01:40.40\00:01:42.23 >>Actually, we are covering many different subjects, 00:01:43.73\00:01:48.64 especially when it comes to the theories 00:01:48.64\00:01:51.27 that are available today. 00:01:51.27\00:01:54.61 There are many different perspectives that we have, 00:01:54.61\00:01:58.11 and world religions around the globe 00:01:58.11\00:02:02.32 have proposed different approaches to it, 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.92 different understandings of what happens 00:02:04.92\00:02:07.72 when somebody dies. 00:02:07.72\00:02:10.26 But what we really want to do is to cover the Bible, 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.30 what the Bible has to say, and how the Bible explains it 00:02:14.30\00:02:18.97 within the framework of the great 00:02:18.97\00:02:21.44 cosmic historical controversy between good and evil. 00:02:21.44\00:02:26.51 And I think that this is a major topic for us to understand 00:02:27.81\00:02:31.85 due to the many different expressions 00:02:31.85\00:02:35.72 of mysticism, spiritualism, different theories that we have 00:02:35.72\00:02:40.56 since the most remote times of human history. 00:02:40.56\00:02:45.03 So I think that we need, really, 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.23 to have a clear understanding of the Bible concept 00:02:47.23\00:02:50.07 of this topic in a time where we have a huge mosaic 00:02:50.07\00:02:55.04 of philosophical and ideological 00:02:55.94\00:02:59.34 proposition expressions. 00:02:59.34\00:03:02.31 >>So we're launching into this right now, 00:03:02.31\00:03:04.25 and we're kind of studying, at least loosely, 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.38 the "Sabbath School" Adult Sabbath School 00:03:07.38\00:03:10.02 Bible Study Guide, the quarterly studies, as it were, 00:03:10.02\00:03:14.79 but this didn't just happen. 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.79 I mean, a quarterly didn't just appear one day. 00:03:16.79\00:03:21.53 It had an origin. So how far back does this lesson go? 00:03:21.53\00:03:25.70 When did it kind of start coming into being? 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.47 What was the impetus that caused it to be and so forth? 00:03:28.47\00:03:32.44 Give us a little history. 00:03:32.44\00:03:34.28 >>Well, some four years, I don't know exactly the date, 00:03:34.28\00:03:38.65 but my friend Cliff Goldstein asked me to write 00:03:38.65\00:03:41.98 a Sabbath school quarterly, 00:03:41.98\00:03:43.72 and we discussed a few possibilities, 00:03:43.72\00:03:46.86 and finally he said, "I want you to write on this topic, 00:03:46.86\00:03:51.16 the state of the dead." 00:03:51.16\00:03:54.30 And then I asked him, "But why do you want me 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.53 to do something on this matter?" 00:03:56.53\00:03:58.60 He said, "Because there is a need. 00:03:58.60\00:04:01.00 "Many people worldwidely are really having doubts, 00:04:01.00\00:04:05.71 "asking questions. They are faced with this kind of... 00:04:05.71\00:04:10.35 "even near-death experiences that are available today-- 00:04:10.35\00:04:14.15 "or very much popular in our days-- 00:04:14.15\00:04:17.79 "and other kinds of experiences. 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.16 "People in different places of the world 00:04:20.16\00:04:22.42 "have influences from different world religions 00:04:22.42\00:04:26.76 "that do not fit with the Bible, 00:04:26.76\00:04:29.30 "and we need a solid ground from the Bible 00:04:29.30\00:04:32.57 to understand this topic." 00:04:32.57\00:04:34.20 So that was the beginning of the whole process. 00:04:34.20\00:04:37.27 And of course, it took time, really, 00:04:37.27\00:04:39.77 to dig into it from a historical perspective 00:04:39.77\00:04:44.75 a little bit and also from the biblical, 00:04:44.75\00:04:47.62 what the Bible has to say. 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.92 >>So it's been several years in the making. 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.15 It's a subject that has plagued humanity 00:04:53.15\00:04:56.59 with misconceptions over the years, 00:04:56.59\00:04:58.43 and misconceptions still exist today, 00:04:58.43\00:05:01.26 different mindsets, different worldviews, 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.53 different philosophies, as you mention, 00:05:03.53\00:05:05.83 and our first lesson here really kind of lays 00:05:05.83\00:05:10.07 the framework or the groundwork or the foundation 00:05:10.07\00:05:13.54 for where we're gonna be going over 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.11 the course of the next several weeks. 00:05:15.11\00:05:17.61 It's called "Rebellion in a Perfect Universe." 00:05:17.61\00:05:21.38 So God, we know, is good. 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.35 What he makes is good, good, and very good. 00:05:25.45\00:05:28.62 He knows the end from the beginning, 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.79 but yet we have this problem of sin; 00:05:31.86\00:05:35.00 we have this problem of death 00:05:35.00\00:05:36.83 that we see in existence today. 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.43 How do we explain this good and evil, 00:05:40.54\00:05:43.81 this right and wrong that we see in the world today, 00:05:43.81\00:05:46.74 sometimes even a blending of the two? 00:05:46.74\00:05:50.55 Somehow sin happened--I don't know if that's the word 00:05:50.55\00:05:54.52 that I feel completely comfortable with, 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.52 but I lack a better one at the moment. 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.62 How did this begin? 00:05:58.62\00:06:00.99 Why are we in the situation that we're in right now? 00:06:00.99\00:06:04.66 >>Some people believe that evil started 00:06:05.73\00:06:08.16 in the Garden of Eden. 00:06:08.16\00:06:10.57 But you have to remember that at the Garden of Eden, 00:06:10.57\00:06:13.27 there was, prior to the fall of Adam and Eve, 00:06:13.27\00:06:17.01 there was a serpent, and then comes the question, 00:06:17.01\00:06:20.78 "And what was the origin of the serpent 00:06:20.78\00:06:24.88 tempting Adam and Eve?" 00:06:24.88\00:06:26.92 So it brings us back into some kind of-- 00:06:26.92\00:06:31.99 I don't know if we should call it a proto-history-- 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.16 but prior to human history, there was something going on. 00:06:36.16\00:06:40.73 Of course, there are different theories. 00:06:40.73\00:06:42.46 For instance, some people say that evil is just an illusion. 00:06:42.46\00:06:47.54 There is no evil, as such. 00:06:48.34\00:06:50.97 Other ones say that God and evil are co-eternal, 00:06:50.97\00:06:56.04 so they did not have a beginning, 00:06:57.15\00:06:58.85 and some people even arguing this way: 00:06:58.85\00:07:02.58 If there is good, 00:07:03.69\00:07:05.79 for good to be considered as such, 00:07:05.79\00:07:09.59 to be good, it has to always exist in contrast to evil. 00:07:09.59\00:07:14.20 So evil would be co-eternal with good. 00:07:14.20\00:07:17.83 And other ones even argue that God is the source of both, 00:07:17.83\00:07:22.54 good and evil. 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.24 But if we study the Bible, and we have many passages 00:07:25.64\00:07:28.08 that deal with this, the Bible is very clear 00:07:28.08\00:07:31.95 of saying that evil is not eternal. 00:07:31.95\00:07:35.58 It had a beginning, and the beginning took place 00:07:35.58\00:07:39.32 with an angel in heaven called Lucifer, 00:07:39.32\00:07:43.69 who rebelled against God and who really was 00:07:43.69\00:07:48.00 the beginning of everything and even convinced 00:07:48.00\00:07:51.70 other angelic beings, and finally it came to this earth. 00:07:51.70\00:07:55.07 So this is just a framework for us to start our discussion. 00:07:55.07\00:07:59.54 >>You speak of Lucifer kind of being part 00:08:00.68\00:08:04.35 of the origin of evil. 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.35 Our memory verse for this week is from the book of Isaiah. 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.85 It's Isaiah, chapter 14 and verse number 12. 00:08:09.85\00:08:13.82 I'm gonna go ahead and read that here. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.66 Isaiah 14, verse 12 says, "How you are fallen from heaven, 00:08:15.66\00:08:19.16 "O Lucifer, son of the morning! 00:08:19.16\00:08:21.36 "How you are cut down to the ground, 00:08:21.36\00:08:23.43 you who weakened the nations!" 00:08:23.43\00:08:26.37 So here's this picture of Lucifer, 00:08:26.37\00:08:29.60 a perfect being, God created a perfect being, 00:08:30.97\00:08:33.54 but then something happened. 00:08:33.54\00:08:37.31 What kind of evidence do we have in the Bible of-- 00:08:37.31\00:08:40.18 or do we have evidence in the Bible of what happened 00:08:40.18\00:08:43.18 or why it happened or how it happened 00:08:43.18\00:08:45.49 or what, how did sin get in here? 00:08:45.49\00:08:48.46 How did rebellion have 00:08:48.46\00:08:51.73 an initial starting point or something along those lines? 00:08:51.73\00:08:56.53 >>When it comes to the beginning, 00:08:58.03\00:08:59.70 and you remember that neither of us was alive when it came 00:08:59.70\00:09:04.77 into existence, so we are dependent of the eyewitnesses, 00:09:06.11\00:09:10.25 and no better than God himself, who was there 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.88 when these things happened. 00:09:13.88\00:09:15.98 And actually, we have three key Bible passages 00:09:15.98\00:09:20.22 that help us to understand the origin of evil. 00:09:20.22\00:09:24.23 And one of those is Ezekiel, chapter 28. 00:09:24.23\00:09:29.13 And that chapter is a very significant one. 00:09:30.50\00:09:34.67 In there, it speaks about the earthly king of Tyre. 00:09:34.67\00:09:39.37 And that king was considered himself, 00:09:40.48\00:09:44.45 he was considering himself as a god, 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.28 somebody that really was very powerful and who really 00:09:47.28\00:09:52.32 ended up very proud of his beauty, 00:09:53.36\00:09:58.43 his power, his whatever else you want to add. 00:09:58.43\00:10:02.30 But it's very interesting, the movement in this chapter-- 00:10:02.30\00:10:06.10 and you can study it later on-- 00:10:06.10\00:10:08.34 I am referring to Ezekiel, chapter 28, 00:10:08.34\00:10:12.21 and this earthly king then later on 00:10:12.21\00:10:16.34 assumes as a symbol, as a type, 00:10:16.34\00:10:20.38 as a figure of an angelical being. 00:10:20.38\00:10:25.22 So, this earthly king represented an angelic being, 00:10:25.22\00:10:29.89 and that being really was very proud of himself, 00:10:29.89\00:10:33.73 of his beauty, his wisdom, and so on. 00:10:33.73\00:10:38.77 And there you see immediately 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.50 that kind of change from the earthly to the heavenly realms. 00:10:41.50\00:10:46.47 You have something similar also in Isaiah, chapter 14. 00:10:47.94\00:10:50.91 And there now is the king of Babylon, another earthy king, 00:10:50.91\00:10:55.88 and he also was a symbol of Lucifer. 00:10:57.12\00:11:01.02 Either it starts with a human being, 00:11:01.02\00:11:04.36 and then it moves to angelical being. 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.23 So that kind of transition in the chapter 00:11:07.23\00:11:10.90 is very significant and we have to take into consideration. 00:11:10.90\00:11:15.20 But then you go to chapter 12 of the book of Revelation. 00:11:15.20\00:11:20.08 In there it says that there was actually some kind 00:11:20.08\00:11:24.48 of war in heaven, 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.45 not only a clash of ideas, of ideologies, 00:11:26.45\00:11:30.12 but it was really an actual war, the chapter says. 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.79 And there was Michael fighting against 00:11:33.79\00:11:37.79 this Lucifer or dragon, the old serpent, and finally 00:11:37.79\00:11:42.73 he was expelled from heaven. 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.27 So that was basically the beginning of it. 00:11:45.27\00:11:48.00 It was in the heavenly courts that it happened, 00:11:48.00\00:11:51.71 and it then later on spread to this earth. 00:11:51.71\00:11:55.08 >>And so we're living in the middle of that right now, 00:11:56.54\00:11:58.51 and, Alberto, you made mention of Ezekiel, chapter 28. 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.95 I'm gonna read just a couple of short passages here. 00:12:01.95\00:12:04.25 They're fascinating. 00:12:04.25\00:12:05.79 In Ezekiel 28, it says in verse number 12, 00:12:05.79\00:12:08.42 "You were the seal of perfection"--the seal of 00:12:08.42\00:12:13.13 perfection-- "full of wisdom and perfect in beauty." 00:12:13.13\00:12:16.56 Then drop down to verse number 14. 00:12:16.56\00:12:18.80 It says, "You were the anointed cherub who covers; 00:12:18.80\00:12:21.17 "I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; 00:12:21.17\00:12:24.61 "you walked back and forth in the midst of the fiery stones. 00:12:24.61\00:12:27.94 "You were perfect in your ways 00:12:27.94\00:12:30.78 "from the day you were created, 00:12:30.78\00:12:33.55 till iniquity was found in you." 00:12:33.55\00:12:36.02 We're gonna come back in just a couple of minutes 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.39 and look at this concept of perfection 00:12:39.39\00:12:43.12 that God had brought into existence, 00:12:43.12\00:12:46.23 and Lucifer here was a perfect being, 00:12:46.23\00:12:50.40 and yet somehow in the midst of this perfection, 00:12:50.40\00:12:53.77 somehow imperfection reared its head, 00:12:53.77\00:12:57.07 and we're gonna dig into that when we come back 00:12:57.07\00:12:59.14 in just a moment, but before we go 00:12:59.14\00:13:00.81 to our quick break, I wanna encourage you 00:13:00.81\00:13:03.14 if you are interested or if you know someone 00:13:03.14\00:13:05.98 who is really interested in digging into this subject 00:13:05.98\00:13:08.85 more deeply, I wanna encourage you to pick up 00:14:55.46\00:14:57.63 We are continuing our study into a brand new quarter 00:14:57.63\00:15:01.76 looking at "Death, Dying, and the Future Hope," 00:15:01.76\00:15:05.40 and we left off with this question 00:15:05.40\00:15:07.07 about if God created everything perfect, 00:15:07.07\00:15:09.87 including Lucifer, what happened? 00:15:09.87\00:15:13.71 So, how do we understand this concept 00:15:13.71\00:15:17.95 of evil in a perfect universe? 00:15:17.95\00:15:23.02 Alberto, can you help us to understand that 00:15:24.15\00:15:24.82 a little bit better? 00:15:24.82\00:15:26.39 >>I don't, can't help you to understand 00:15:27.62\00:15:31.19 for one simple reason. (chuckles) 00:15:31.19\00:15:34.20 Evil is something absolutely mysterious. 00:15:34.20\00:15:38.47 There is no way for us to explain the origin of evil. 00:15:38.47\00:15:43.44 We can, of course, say we know with whom it started. 00:15:43.44\00:15:47.98 Basically, it was in heaven, 00:15:48.78\00:15:52.15 but the evil really exists but has no way 00:15:52.15\00:15:57.09 to be explained as such. 00:15:57.09\00:15:59.75 It has a mysterious, unreasonable 00:15:59.75\00:16:03.83 understanding and beginning. 00:16:04.73\00:16:07.60 In this way, some theologians-- 00:16:07.60\00:16:10.93 and I refer, for instance, to Berkouwer, 00:16:10.93\00:16:13.94 is a Dutch theologian. He even says that there is no reason, 00:16:13.94\00:16:18.44 there is no way of explaining it, 00:16:18.44\00:16:20.98 and Ellen White says, "If we would be able to find 00:16:20.98\00:16:24.85 "a reasonable way of explaining evil, 00:16:24.85\00:16:29.08 we would end up justifying the existence of evil." 00:16:29.08\00:16:34.09 So it has no reason to exist as such. 00:16:34.09\00:16:38.06 It is absolutely mysterious. 00:16:38.06\00:16:39.93 What we know is that God created human beings, 00:16:39.93\00:16:44.37 including Lucifer and the rebellious angels, with free 00:16:44.37\00:16:49.44 will, and they misused free will, but how it happened 00:16:50.77\00:16:55.08 is something that's absolutely unexplainable. 00:16:56.38\00:16:59.61 >>I think for dealing with something that is unexplainable, 00:16:59.61\00:17:03.18 you did an excellent job of explaining that concept. 00:17:03.18\00:17:06.39 It's something that, if we could explain it, 00:17:06.39\00:17:08.86 somehow it would cease to--it would seem like, 00:17:08.86\00:17:13.43 as you said, it would seem justifiable, 00:17:13.43\00:17:15.80 because we could say, "Okay, now I understand why." 00:17:15.80\00:17:18.47 But there is no understanding why. 00:17:18.47\00:17:20.27 It simply is, and it came into being. 00:17:20.27\00:17:24.21 But let's step back just a little bit. 00:17:24.21\00:17:27.38 We know that Lucifer rebelled. 00:17:27.38\00:17:28.91 He became Satan, he became the adversary, 00:17:28.91\00:17:31.48 he became the devil, a perfect angel God created, 00:17:31.48\00:17:34.68 and he rebelled, but then sometimes 00:17:34.68\00:17:39.29 people ask the question, "But didn't God know 00:17:39.29\00:17:42.22 "that Lucifer would rebel? 00:17:42.22\00:17:43.79 "If God knows the end from the beginning, 00:17:43.79\00:17:46.33 "if he knew what was going to happen, 00:17:46.33\00:17:49.43 "why did he create Lucifer to begin with? 00:17:49.43\00:17:53.00 "Or why did he create Lucifer with the ability 00:17:53.00\00:17:56.87 to do what he did? Why didn't God just not create him 00:17:56.87\00:18:01.58 and save us all this pain and anguish?" 00:18:01.58\00:18:04.55 How would you answer someone who asked a question like that? 00:18:04.55\00:18:08.18 >>There are several elements that we have to bring together 00:18:08.18\00:18:11.35 to understand this matter better. 00:18:11.35\00:18:15.49 One of those is the very nature of God. 00:18:15.49\00:18:18.83 God is love, and you know that love 00:18:18.83\00:18:22.23 cannot live in isolation. 00:18:22.23\00:18:25.13 Love only exists if it's expressed to somebody, 00:18:25.13\00:18:30.21 and to express it, 00:18:30.87\00:18:32.87 the person has to be receptive to love, 00:18:32.87\00:18:36.44 should respond also, and this does not happen with machines 00:18:36.44\00:18:41.52 or what--things--or if somebody would not have free will, 00:18:42.82\00:18:46.69 would not work either. 00:18:47.36\00:18:48.66 So God created beings, angelical beings in heaven, 00:18:48.66\00:18:53.19 and human beings also, capable of responding. 00:18:53.19\00:18:57.00 But granting free will to somebody always face the risk, 00:18:57.00\00:19:02.07 and that was the case of God. 00:19:02.87\00:19:04.87 But at the same time, God is love, 00:19:04.87\00:19:08.81 and he would like to face this risk. 00:19:08.81\00:19:12.51 Of course, God knows the end from the beginning, 00:19:12.51\00:19:16.12 and God was not taken by surprise. 00:19:16.12\00:19:19.45 He knew that Lucifer would rebel, but even so, 00:19:19.45\00:19:23.46 he faced the risk and created him, 00:19:23.46\00:19:27.40 because God's foreknowledge, 00:19:27.40\00:19:30.47 or his knowledge of the future, 00:19:30.47\00:19:33.44 is absolute but is not causative. 00:19:33.44\00:19:36.44 Some people say, "Well, if God knew and created, 00:19:36.44\00:19:39.74 then he's responsible for evil." 00:19:39.74\00:19:42.51 Not the case. For one reason, 00:19:42.51\00:19:45.35 because he was the one that would have to pay the price 00:19:46.75\00:19:51.02 for the rebellion of Lucifer, 00:19:51.02\00:19:53.02 and that is what he paid on the cross 00:19:53.02\00:19:56.36 through the life and death of Jesus Christ. 00:19:56.36\00:20:00.13 But remember, God knows the future. 00:20:00.13\00:20:03.47 It's something like let's suppose 00:20:03.47\00:20:05.63 that you decide to get married. 00:20:05.63\00:20:08.34 You know that sometimes marriage does not work, 00:20:08.34\00:20:11.51 but for the sake of love, 00:20:11.51\00:20:14.88 because you love somebody, 00:20:14.88\00:20:17.41 even knowing that there are possibilities, 00:20:17.41\00:20:19.91 you want to face the risk. 00:20:19.91\00:20:22.35 >>So God didn't, God's not responsible for evil. 00:20:24.12\00:20:27.86 He's not responsible for death. 00:20:27.86\00:20:29.52 He's not responsible for sin. 00:20:29.52\00:20:32.63 But Lucifer exercised his freedom to choose, 00:20:32.63\00:20:37.23 and he exercised it, we might say, poorly, 00:20:37.23\00:20:40.90 and as a result of that, we live in the world 00:20:40.90\00:20:43.47 that we live in today. 00:20:43.47\00:20:45.01 Let's take a look at evil, at sin, 00:20:46.21\00:20:50.51 at death from a slightly different perspective here. 00:20:50.51\00:20:54.42 God is eternal. 00:20:54.42\00:20:55.68 He had no beginning, and he has no end. 00:20:55.68\00:21:00.29 We live in a universe that, at least as far 00:21:01.42\00:21:04.03 as we're aware, had some sort of a beginning. 00:21:04.03\00:21:06.86 It's continuing through the time that we're in right now, 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.10 and something's going to happen to it in the future. 00:21:09.10\00:21:11.90 What about evil? 00:21:11.90\00:21:13.00 How does evil fit into this cosmic timeline 00:21:13.00\00:21:17.87 that we find ourselves in? We know that it had a beginning, 00:21:19.27\00:21:22.21 because we read about that in the Bible, 00:21:22.21\00:21:23.68 in the several passages you talked about, 00:21:23.68\00:21:25.05 in Ezekiel and Isaiah and Revelation, chapter 12. 00:21:25.05\00:21:28.48 Evil had a beginning. 00:21:28.48\00:21:30.52 Is it reasonable to hope, dare we hope, 00:21:30.52\00:21:34.59 that evil is also going to have an end at some point? 00:21:34.59\00:21:38.66 >>Definitely so, 00:21:38.66\00:21:41.00 because evil was never a part of God's plan. 00:21:41.00\00:21:46.07 Some people claim that evil is part of God's plan 00:21:47.50\00:21:51.24 through predestination because then 00:21:51.24\00:21:53.88 he could show his love, but God does not need evil 00:21:53.88\00:21:58.21 to show his love because he could really show 00:21:58.21\00:22:00.85 his love, and he did so prior to the rebellion of Lucifer, 00:22:00.85\00:22:05.45 his angels, and then later on human beings as well. 00:22:05.45\00:22:10.53 But there is one crucial point in this whole discussion. 00:22:11.86\00:22:15.76 Within this great controversy 00:22:16.56\00:22:18.83 between God and Satan, good and evil, 00:22:18.83\00:22:23.91 Satan decided to accuse God of being unjust, 00:22:24.97\00:22:29.41 that his own model of government 00:22:30.21\00:22:32.48 would be far better than God. 00:22:32.48\00:22:35.35 God was very much into follow his own agenda, 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.09 his rules, and so on, and then Lucifer showed up 00:22:39.09\00:22:43.22 offering some better form of government. 00:22:43.22\00:22:47.03 And that was the beginning of evil, 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.17 and throughout human history, you could ask 00:22:51.37\00:22:54.30 the question, for instance, "But, okay, 00:22:54.30\00:22:57.11 "that God allowed evil to appear, 00:22:57.11\00:23:00.71 but why did he not stop it immediately 00:23:00.71\00:23:05.78 or in the past?" 00:23:06.31\00:23:07.58 Well, we don't have answers to all the questions 00:23:07.58\00:23:10.82 that we raise because we are in a mysterious topic, 00:23:10.82\00:23:15.26 and we can only study mysteries 00:23:15.26\00:23:18.79 as long as the Bible takes us. 00:23:18.79\00:23:21.76 But what we know is that God allowed evil 00:23:21.76\00:23:25.87 to continue throughout human history because evil 00:23:25.87\00:23:29.60 has to mature and show its very nature. 00:23:29.60\00:23:34.21 And I think that we are living today 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.21 in one of the most crucial moments of human history, 00:23:36.21\00:23:40.45 where our society, our world, 00:23:40.45\00:23:44.32 our political systems are really almost collapsing. 00:23:44.32\00:23:48.86 And it will come to a point where it really would be 00:23:48.86\00:23:52.73 either God intervenes in human history, 00:23:52.73\00:23:55.93 or humanity will out to destroy or self-destroy 00:23:55.93\00:24:00.07 themselves, I mean, the human race. 00:24:00.07\00:24:04.97 But, as I mentioned before, God never planned 00:24:06.27\00:24:09.98 evil to exist. He only allowed it to exist. 00:24:09.98\00:24:14.78 So, since it's not part of God's plan, 00:24:14.78\00:24:18.32 definitely he's planning to put an end on it, 00:24:18.32\00:24:23.02 and he knows exactly when, 00:24:23.02\00:24:25.43 and human history is a long process where good 00:24:25.43\00:24:29.00 and evil is struggling, and each one, 00:24:29.00\00:24:32.03 good and evil, is demonstrating their own nature, 00:24:32.03\00:24:36.20 and finally evil will be destroyed. 00:24:36.20\00:24:38.84 And this is the topic that we'll be studying 00:24:38.84\00:24:41.98 throughout this quarter. 00:24:41.98\00:24:44.08 >>So that's encouraging. 00:24:44.08\00:24:45.45 We know that evil is going to one day be destroyed. 00:24:45.45\00:24:48.15 The bad news is, if we can call it bad news-- 00:24:48.15\00:24:50.85 I think it's appropriate--right now 00:24:50.85\00:24:52.55 we're living in a world that seems to be 00:24:52.55\00:24:55.09 just inundated with evil and sin. 00:24:55.09\00:24:58.09 So we've looked briefly at Lucifer's rebellion in heaven. 00:24:58.09\00:25:01.66 What lessons can we learn about Lucifer's rebellion 00:25:01.66\00:25:06.57 in heaven that we could apply to our lives to help us 00:25:06.57\00:25:09.97 not head that same direction? 00:25:09.97\00:25:12.57 >>Well, there are different explanations to why 00:25:12.57\00:25:15.51 or the way how Lucifer really started his rebellion, 00:25:15.51\00:25:19.61 but I like a thought that is that he actually lost, 00:25:19.61\00:25:24.52 in a mysterious way, as we mentioned before, 00:25:24.52\00:25:28.19 his thankfulness to God. He was no longer thankful to God. 00:25:28.19\00:25:33.26 And in other words, he considered himself more 00:25:34.66\00:25:38.10 important that God really considered him, or than he was, 00:25:38.10\00:25:42.87 so proudness was a key element in his nature. 00:25:42.87\00:25:47.94 And I tell you something, in life, 00:25:48.98\00:25:50.71 the worst thing that can happen to you and to me 00:25:50.71\00:25:54.25 is if we start considering us as more important 00:25:54.25\00:25:58.35 than we are, than we actually are. 00:25:58.35\00:26:01.76 And sometimes we believe, "Well, 00:26:01.76\00:26:03.83 "I should have more recognition, 00:26:03.83\00:26:05.69 be more recognized in my work here and there." 00:26:05.69\00:26:08.83 I always say the following: 00:26:08.83\00:26:11.30 When I was a teacher, a professor of theology, 00:26:11.30\00:26:15.50 I used to say, "Well, prepare yourself 00:26:15.50\00:26:19.37 "the more you can, to the most, 00:26:19.37\00:26:24.28 but don't expect too much and you will never be frustrated." 00:26:24.28\00:26:28.75 It does not mean that you cannot have ideals, 00:26:28.75\00:26:32.02 but remember, proudness is the worst thing 00:26:32.02\00:26:36.22 that can happen in your life and in my life. 00:26:36.22\00:26:41.03 But one thing that amazes me from all this 00:26:41.03\00:26:45.33 is that even knowing 00:26:45.33\00:26:48.30 the nature of Satan, 00:26:48.30\00:26:52.97 God decided to create him because he loves 00:26:52.97\00:26:56.48 not only his own friends but even his enemies, 00:26:56.48\00:27:00.92 and this is the pattern of love that we should have. 00:27:00.92\00:27:05.25 God loves even his enemies, and I tell you something. 00:27:05.25\00:27:08.86 You might be surprised about this. 00:27:08.86\00:27:10.96 He loves his greatest enemy, that is Satan, 00:27:10.96\00:27:14.83 and this is the pattern, as I mentioned, of love 00:27:14.83\00:27:17.87 that Christ in the sermon on the mountain mentioned, 00:27:17.87\00:27:20.90 that we should have as well. 00:27:20.90\00:27:23.64 >>Dr. Timm, I wanna thank you for joining us today 00:27:23.64\00:27:26.78 on our study through the Sabbath school lesson, 00:27:26.78\00:27:29.48 and we, of course, are going to be welcoming you back again 00:27:29.48\00:27:32.58 next week and the week after 00:27:32.58\00:27:34.48 and the week after as we continue looking 00:27:34.48\00:27:36.69 at "Death, Dying and the Future Hope." 00:27:36.69\00:27:39.09 And we also hope that you will join us week after week 00:27:39.09\00:27:42.39 as we continue to find encouragement and hope 00:27:42.39\00:27:46.83 in God's Word as we unpack it and learn more about him 00:27:46.83\00:27:50.00 and his plan for your life. God bless you. 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.87 Have a wonderful day, and we'll look forward 00:27:52.87\00:27:54.47 to seeing you again next time on "Sabbath School," 00:27:54.47\00:27:57.21 brought to you by It is Written. 00:27:57.21\00:27:59.47 (inspirational theme music) 00:27:59.47\00:28:03.71 (music ends) 00:28:26.33\00:28:28.94
