00:02:40.39\00:02:41.76 And most likely you would 00:02:42.32\00:02:43.22 say yes. 00:02:43.22\00:02:44.13 People say yes, they can. 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.26 And they go through the efforts 00:02:45.26\00:02:46.66 of taking out a piece of paper, 00:02:46.66\00:02:48.30 writing down their income. 00:02:48.30\00:02:49.53 Well, usually that's 00:02:49.53\00:02:50.67 fairly easy, that's fairly 00:02:50.67\00:02:51.67 straightforward. 00:02:51.67\00:02:52.50 And then they come 00:02:52.50\00:02:53.50 to their expenses. 00:02:53.50\00:02:54.50 So what's the first item they 00:02:54.50\00:02:56.14 put on their expense? 00:03:20.40\00:03:21.36 And so what is the very next 00:03:21.36\00:03:22.66 thing we all do? 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.57 [MIKE] Panic. 00:03:24.57\00:03:25.67 >> Panic, yes. 00:03:25.67\00:03:26.70 Or we reduce food. 00:03:26.70\00:03:28.97 So- or entertainment 00:03:28.97\00:03:30.67 or something. 00:03:30.67\00:03:31.61 So we really haven't created 00:03:31.61\00:03:33.64 a budget. 00:03:33.64\00:03:34.54 This isn't a budget. 00:03:34.54\00:03:35.74 So... 00:03:35.74\00:03:36.64 ...I think that's why people, 00:03:37.75\00:03:38.91 there's a problem, you know, and 00:03:38.91\00:03:40.78 people don't like to do it 00:03:40.78\00:03:42.08 because maybe they're not doing 00:03:42.08\00:03:43.15 it correctly. 00:03:43.15\00:03:44.09 So at this juncture, when we're 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.62 looking at building a budget, 00:03:45.62\00:03:47.72 we need to be very honest 00:03:47.72\00:03:48.86 with ourselves. 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.19 You know, places where we don't 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.43 like to go, we need to be super, 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.13 super honest with ourself 00:03:53.13\00:03:55.63 and then look at our past 00:03:55.63\00:03:57.07 spending habits for the past 00:03:57.07\00:03:59.17 number of months. 00:03:59.17\00:04:00.37 And off of that history, 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.50 we can now build a budget 00:04:02.50\00:04:04.51 from actuals 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.24 and in good faith, and we can 00:04:06.24\00:04:07.64 control it to stay to that 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.74 month over month. 00:04:09.74\00:04:10.95 >> If you were to look 00:04:12.71\00:04:13.75 forward over the next 00:04:13.75\00:04:14.85 5, 10, 15 years 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.45 of the things in life 00:04:17.45\00:04:19.02 that were most important for you 00:04:19.02\00:04:21.96 that you'd want to achieve, 00:04:21.96\00:04:23.43 that if you didn't... 00:04:23.43\00:04:24.83 ...you don't wanna kick yourself 00:04:26.66\00:04:27.76 in the bum. 00:04:27.76\00:04:28.76 You'd be just devastated for not 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.80 being able to achieve these 00:04:31.80\00:04:34.27 particular events in your life. 00:04:34.27\00:04:36.30 What would that look like? 00:04:38.74\00:04:40.34 Make a list, 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.35 put a date, 00:04:43.35\00:04:45.25 and then prioritize them. 00:04:45.25\00:04:47.22 I've met very few people 00:04:48.62\00:04:50.82 that have done that exercise. 00:04:50.82\00:04:51.79 that have done that exercise. 00:04:51.79\00:04:52.59 The second part of the exercise 00:04:54.76\00:04:57.86 is once you have 00:04:57.86\00:04:59.26 those priorities... 00:04:59.26\00:05:00.66 ...to now take them, 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.40 put them on the refrigerator, 00:05:03.40\00:05:04.80 put them in places that are 00:05:04.80\00:05:05.97 visible, that they just, 00:05:05.97\00:05:07.47 so won't go from your mind. 00:05:07.47\00:05:09.20 And then now look 00:05:10.84\00:05:13.48 at your current spending. 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.01 And then ask the question... 00:05:16.18\00:05:17.85 ...are the things that I'm 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.35 spontaneously purchasing now... 00:05:21.35\00:05:24.35 ...am I willing to postpone 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.82 these events I said were 00:05:28.82\00:05:30.09 so important 00:05:30.09\00:05:32.09 based upon what I'm 00:05:32.09\00:05:33.26 spending today? 00:10:24.05\00:10:25.92 You know what you need to do 00:10:25.92\00:10:27.92 up until the end of the month. 00:10:27.92\00:10:29.16 You have to start 00:10:29.16\00:10:30.46 watering down the soup. 00:10:30.46\00:10:31.99 You know, conversely, if you 00:10:31.99\00:10:33.43 have only spent 40% and you're 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.73 at the end of week two, 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.20 guess what? 00:10:37.20\00:10:38.27 You might go buy a cheesecake at 00:10:38.27\00:10:39.67 the grocery store or something 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.20 like that to celebrate, but you 00:10:41.20\00:10:42.90 can keep weekly control 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.21 over your budget so at the 00:10:45.21\00:10:46.34 end of the month, you have... 00:10:46.34\00:10:48.61 ...met your budget goals. 00:10:49.74\00:10:51.58 >> Where am I going 00:10:52.28\00:10:53.31 in my future? 00:10:53.31\00:10:54.35 What are my priorities? 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.48 Because if I have that clear... 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.79 ...in which I've brought my 00:11:00.62\00:11:01.92 future into my present... 00:11:01.92\00:11:03.73 ...it enables me to be 00:11:04.79\00:11:06.56 disciplined. 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.30 If I consolidate, 00:11:08.30\00:11:10.37 giving myself breathing room... 00:11:10.37\00:11:12.40 ...but I don't stick to the plan 00:11:14.74\00:11:17.31 and then in turn, 00:11:17.31\00:11:18.67 just do more spending... 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.44 ...and I find myself back 00:11:21.41\00:11:22.94 to where I started from... 00:11:22.94\00:11:24.55 ...then consolidated- 00:11:26.25\00:11:28.08 consolidating the debt 00:11:28.08\00:11:29.35 did me no good. 00:11:29.35\00:11:31.49 So I always come back to 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.19 what are the priorities in which 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.36 you're looking at and where you 00:11:35.36\00:11:36.59 wanna be in five, ten, 15 years. 00:11:36.59\00:11:39.23 And to do that, backing in to 00:11:39.23\00:11:42.06 what that means in the present. 00:11:42.06\00:11:44.23 And then it becomes a little bit 00:11:46.03\00:11:48.74 of self awareness of saying... 00:11:48.74\00:11:51.47 "...Am I really that... 00:11:52.37\00:11:53.98 Am I really that disciplined? 00:11:53.98\00:11:56.54 Can I actually do that? 00:11:56.54\00:11:58.15 Well, if the answer is... 00:11:59.75\00:12:01.15 ...eh, we're not good at that. 00:12:02.22\00:12:03.89 Well, then don't do 00:12:04.72\00:12:06.35 the consolidation, 00:12:06.35\00:12:08.22 because now you're putting 00:12:08.22\00:12:09.26 yourself in a bad situation. 00:12:09.26\00:12:10.56 So this is all... 00:12:10.56\00:12:11.73 As I'm, you know, I hope, 00:12:12.56\00:12:14.23 you know, as you're listening 00:12:14.23\00:12:15.66 to me, what I'm really saying is 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.60 there is no cookie cutter. 00:12:18.60\00:12:20.40 It's a lot of self-awareness 00:12:20.40\00:12:22.77 of knowing yourself and what 00:12:22.77\00:12:24.47 your habits are. 00:12:24.47\00:12:25.91 And then based upon knowing what 00:12:26.71\00:12:28.71 your habits are and the 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.61 discipline you're willing to 00:12:30.61\00:12:32.05 apply, then choosing, 00:12:32.05\00:12:34.85 making the choice that reflects 00:12:34.85\00:12:37.25 the person you know you are. 00:12:37.25\00:12:39.35 >> I think that it is a myth 00:12:40.82\00:12:43.06 believing that budget holds you 00:12:43.06\00:12:44.76 back from living an exciting, 00:12:44.76\00:12:47.56 a free life. 00:12:47.56\00:12:49.33 Sometimes people can think that 00:12:49.33\00:12:50.80 it imprisons you with your money 00:12:50.80\00:12:52.87 and it doesn't allow you 00:12:52.87\00:12:53.94 to have fun. 00:12:53.94\00:12:55.04 But I actually think 00:12:55.04\00:12:56.04 the opposite. 00:12:56.04\00:12:56.87 I think that having a budget 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.67 actually gives you so much more 00:12:58.67\00:13:00.41 freedom, because without a 00:13:00.41\00:13:02.18 budget, you can find yourself 00:13:02.18\00:13:04.08 spending carelessly and 00:13:04.08\00:13:06.08 finding yourself in debt. 00:13:06.08\00:13:08.12 Whereas when you have a budget, 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.98 it allows you to actually 00:13:09.98\00:13:11.12 visually see how much money 00:13:11.12\00:13:13.05 you have coming in and how much 00:13:13.05\00:13:14.92 you can afford to actually 00:13:14.92\00:13:16.16 spend on your needs, 00:13:16.16\00:13:17.63 and sometimes even your wants. 00:13:17.63\00:13:19.56 So there's actually something 00:13:19.56\00:13:20.83 that has kind of blown up on 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.20 social media lately. 00:13:22.20\00:13:23.23 It's called "girl math." 00:13:23.23\00:13:25.17 So with girl math, there's this 00:13:25.17\00:13:27.60 thought that, "Okay, if I'm 00:13:27.60\00:13:28.87 spending cash, I'm technically 00:13:28.87\00:13:30.84 not spending money because it's 00:13:30.84\00:13:32.47 not lowering the number of my 00:13:32.47\00:13:34.21 bank account." 00:13:34.21\00:13:35.21 Or if I bought something and I 00:13:35.21\00:13:36.75 returned it, now I have this 00:13:36.75\00:13:38.05 refunded money, so that's money 00:13:38.05\00:13:39.81 I would have spent anyway, 00:13:39.81\00:13:40.85 so it doesn't count if 00:13:40.85\00:13:41.85 I spend it again. 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.12 So you just have to really steer 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.42 away from these ideas about, 00:13:45.42\00:13:47.49 "Okay, I'm spending something 00:13:47.49\00:13:49.66 that's on sale, 00:13:49.66\00:13:50.69 I'm saving money." 00:13:50.69\00:13:51.83 No, that money is still 00:13:51.83\00:13:52.83 coming out right? 00:13:52.83\00:13:53.90 So you just have to ground 00:13:53.90\00:13:55.46 yourself when it comes to your 00:13:55.46\00:13:56.70 spending and really look into 00:13:56.70\00:13:58.60 saving and investing 00:13:58.60\00:14:00.20 specifically. 00:14:00.20\00:14:01.07 Saving is great and investing is 00:14:01.07\00:14:02.50 great as well. 00:14:02.50\00:14:03.87 Save for the rainy day. 00:14:03.87\00:14:05.37 They say that, you know, if 00:14:05.37\00:14:07.08 an emergency comes up or 00:14:07.08\00:14:08.91 by any chance, maybe you lost 00:14:08.91\00:14:10.21 your job, you should have 00:14:10.21\00:14:11.68 savings for around 3 to 6 months 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.72 that can cover your living 00:14:13.72\00:14:14.75 expenses if you were to lose 00:14:14.75\00:14:16.69 your job. 00:14:16.69\00:14:17.49 So keep that in mind as well 00:14:17.49\00:14:18.82 when you're doing a budget, 00:14:18.82\00:14:19.82 to have money set aside 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.32 in the case that, God forbid, 00:14:21.32\00:14:22.92 you lose your job. 00:14:22.92\00:14:23.96 One of the biggest positives 00:14:24.59\00:14:27.40 is savings. 00:14:27.40\00:14:28.73 So, should there be specific 00:14:28.73\00:14:31.23 items that a family or an 00:14:31.23\00:14:32.97 individual should save for? 00:14:32.97\00:14:35.00 Otherwise you get these savings, 00:14:35.00\00:14:36.20 like, where does it go? 00:14:36.20\00:14:37.27 You know, 72,000 different 00:14:37.27\00:14:38.97 things you could save for. 00:14:38.97\00:14:40.31 What should they be saving for? 00:14:40.31\00:14:41.98 >> You know, so typically if you 00:14:43.04\00:14:44.11 ask someone to build their 00:14:44.11\00:14:45.25 budget, just as we alluded to at 00:14:45.25\00:14:46.72 the top on the expense side, 00:14:46.72\00:14:48.05 is going to be food and mortgage 00:14:48.05\00:14:49.72 or rent. 00:14:49.72\00:14:50.65 And then at the very, very 00:14:50.65\00:14:51.89 bottom, you know, they're gonna 00:14:51.89\00:14:53.39 put savings and it's whatever 00:14:53.39\00:14:55.29 they have left goes into there. 00:14:55.29\00:14:57.76 That shouldn't be the case. 00:14:57.76\00:14:58.99 You know, up at the top 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.36 you need to have saving 00:15:00.36\00:15:01.70 for your retirement. 00:15:01.70\00:15:03.20 You're gonna be retired too long 00:15:03.20\00:15:04.93 to not have planned for it. 00:15:04.93\00:15:06.70 That's where you're gonna be 00:15:06.70\00:15:07.84 saving for your child's future 00:15:07.84\00:15:08.84 needs, that's where you're gonna 00:15:08.84\00:15:09.87 have future expenditures. 00:15:09.87\00:15:11.37 And if your emergency fund isn't 00:15:11.37\00:15:12.81 fully funded, that's where 00:15:12.81\00:15:13.98 you need to fund your 00:15:13.98\00:15:15.01 emergency fund. 00:15:15.01\00:15:15.98 So if you start young 00:15:15.98\00:15:17.78 and you start it systematically 00:15:17.78\00:15:19.68 every month, those four line 00:15:19.68\00:15:21.68 items don't amount to a lot, 00:15:21.68\00:15:24.42 but you have to be consistent. 00:15:24.42\00:15:26.62 So those are the future items 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.52 that you must put 00:15:28.52\00:15:29.99 in your budget and you must be 00:15:29.99\00:15:31.73 systematic about it every month. 00:15:31.73\00:15:34.30 >> Sven, now the family has come 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.87 together and they've created 00:15:36.87\00:15:38.77 their budget and they are 00:15:38.77\00:15:40.10 so excited because it looks like 00:15:40.10\00:15:41.64 they're gonna be able to 00:15:41.64\00:15:42.77 make ends meet every month. 00:15:42.77\00:15:44.84 But now they have to 00:15:44.84\00:15:45.91 stick to it. 00:15:45.91\00:15:47.38 And I guess sticking to that 00:15:47.38\00:15:49.11 budget is easier 00:15:49.11\00:15:51.88 done than what we've 00:15:51.88\00:15:53.45 planned and said. 00:15:53.45\00:15:54.95 So can you give us some 00:15:54.95\00:15:56.32 practical guidelines on how to 00:15:56.32\00:15:58.82 actually stick to that budget? 00:15:58.82\00:16:01.29 >> You know, we all love our 00:16:02.89\00:16:03.89 hobbies, don't we? 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.43 And our hobbies, we do them 00:16:05.43\00:16:07.93 often. 00:16:07.93\00:16:09.40 Well, we have the joy and the 00:16:09.40\00:16:11.13 pleasure of adding a hobby, 00:16:11.13\00:16:12.83 and that is finance 00:16:12.83\00:16:13.97 and budgeting. 00:16:13.97\00:16:15.64 And I think we get discouraged. 00:16:15.64\00:16:17.54 You know, we do them 00:16:17.54\00:16:18.57 once a month, we sit down and 00:16:18.57\00:16:19.77 we work on our budget 00:16:19.77\00:16:20.84 once a month, but we forget 00:16:20.84\00:16:22.51 the history and so we get 00:16:22.51\00:16:23.85 discouraged and we just 00:16:23.85\00:16:25.25 crumple up the piece of paper 00:16:25.25\00:16:26.31 and throw it in the garbage. 00:16:26.31\00:16:27.58 But if we do it once a week, 00:16:28.35\00:16:29.88 set a time once a week that 00:16:29.88\00:16:32.15 you are going to sit down and 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.66 reconcile your budget to your 00:16:34.66\00:16:36.12 actual expenditures, I think it 00:16:36.12\00:16:38.33 makes it so much easier. 00:16:38.33\00:16:39.59 And if you have a regular time 00:16:39.59\00:16:41.30 in the week when you always 00:16:41.30\00:16:42.60 do it. 00:16:42.60\00:16:43.47 So again, if you do watch 00:16:43.47\00:16:44.60 hockey, maybe it's always 00:16:44.60\00:16:46.03 Saturday night, you know, 00:16:46.03\00:16:47.07 between the second and third 00:16:47.07\00:16:48.17 period is your time to do 00:16:48.17\00:16:49.77 the budget. 00:16:49.77\00:16:50.77 Maybe it's Sunday morning, 00:16:50.77\00:16:52.07 you know, before anyone else has 00:16:52.07\00:16:53.64 gotten up and you quickly work 00:16:53.64\00:16:55.98 through your budget, 00:16:55.98\00:16:57.21 which doesn't take very long, 00:16:57.21\00:16:58.61 you know, 15 minutes maximum, 00:16:58.61\00:17:00.85 and then you go into the kitchen 00:17:00.85\00:17:02.48 and start making pancakes 00:17:02.48\00:17:03.49 for the family. 00:17:03.49\00:17:04.49 So if you have that set time 00:17:04.49\00:17:06.72 every week where you just take 00:17:06.72\00:17:08.56 a small amount of time, then it 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.46 doesn't become this massive job. 00:17:10.46\00:17:12.86 >> So, Sven, can you tell us 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.63 what the common areas are 00:17:16.63\00:17:18.83 where people usually overspend? 00:17:18.83\00:17:21.37 >> You should be asking my wife 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.01 this question because she could 00:17:24.01\00:17:25.07 tell you top of mind areas 00:17:25.07\00:17:26.81 where I overspend. 00:17:26.81\00:17:28.14 But yes, areas that are commonly 00:17:28.81\00:17:31.51 overspent, you know, food. 00:17:31.51\00:17:34.25 Food is a big one and not food 00:17:35.18\00:17:36.48 that you go to the grocery store 00:17:36.48\00:17:37.89 and then you come home 00:17:37.89\00:17:38.95 and prepare. 00:17:38.95\00:17:39.99 People decide that they are too 00:17:41.36\00:17:42.89 busy for whatever reason and 00:17:42.89\00:17:45.89 they just go grab lunch 00:17:45.89\00:17:48.26 somewhere as opposed to bringing 00:17:48.26\00:17:49.56 a lunch from home. 00:17:49.56\00:17:50.90 That's gonna cost you 00:17:50.90\00:17:51.90 significantly more money 00:17:51.90\00:17:53.54 than making something from home. 00:17:53.54\00:17:54.97 And especially, you think day 00:17:54.97\00:17:56.71 in, day out, week after week, 00:17:56.71\00:17:58.61 the monthly amount, you know, 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.31 on that. 00:18:00.31\00:18:01.41 Speeding through the 00:18:02.21\00:18:03.31 drive through to grab something 00:18:03.31\00:18:04.91 on the go. 00:18:04.91\00:18:05.81 These are areas in where you can 00:18:05.81\00:18:08.02 be quickly out of hand because 00:18:08.02\00:18:09.28 it's convenient. 00:18:09.28\00:18:10.39 You know, other areas... 00:18:11.09\00:18:12.29 Poor purchases 00:18:13.52\00:18:15.62 that maybe aren't going to last. 00:18:15.62\00:18:18.39 Maybe they're just a little bit 00:18:18.39\00:18:19.46 cheaper and so you decide to 00:18:19.46\00:18:20.80 make those type of purchases. 00:18:20.80\00:18:21.93 They're not well thought out. 00:18:21.93\00:18:23.90 And areas that you buy something 00:18:23.90\00:18:25.53 that you already have six of. 00:18:25.53\00:18:26.94 You know, those are areas 00:18:27.87\00:18:29.60 in which we need to take 00:18:29.60\00:18:30.81 a lot of control over. 00:18:30.81\00:18:32.84 Typically, we're very good when 00:18:32.84\00:18:33.98 it comes to large purchases 00:18:33.98\00:18:35.51 because we do our due diligence. 00:18:35.51\00:18:37.75 But somehow we have a disconnect 00:18:37.75\00:18:39.91 when it comes to the daily 00:18:39.91\00:18:41.58 purchases, the small purchases. 00:18:41.58\00:18:43.39 >> And I think what makes it 00:18:44.15\00:18:45.32 difficult is that it's so easy, 00:18:45.32\00:18:48.29 you know, and so we... 00:18:48.29\00:18:49.92 And it's so- it's, you know, 00:18:51.23\00:18:53.46 even today in society, you push 00:18:53.46\00:18:55.56 a button and something happens. 00:18:55.56\00:18:57.03 And so we have that struggle 00:18:57.03\00:18:58.37 with trying to delay that 00:18:58.37\00:18:59.63 gratification and saying, okay, 00:18:59.63\00:19:01.34 just hit the pause button 00:19:01.34\00:19:03.77 and wait. 00:19:03.77\00:19:04.77 >> You're right. 00:19:04.77\00:19:05.74 Amazon is very easy. 00:19:05.74\00:19:07.74 [laughter] 00:19:07.74\00:19:08.71 >> So tell us about the Bible. 00:19:09.34\00:19:11.25 Is there something in the Bible 00:19:11.25\00:19:12.28 that can help us with 00:19:12.28\00:19:13.42 making a budget? 00:19:13.42\00:19:14.52 >> Yeah. 00:19:15.18\00:19:16.28 Let's turn in our Bibles, 00:19:18.22\00:19:20.36 and I would like to... 00:19:20.36\00:19:21.82 ...read a verse found in 00:19:23.02\00:19:24.46 Matthew 6. 00:19:24.46\00:19:25.86 A little bit longer of a verse, 00:19:25.86\00:19:27.13 but I think it is so important 00:19:27.13\00:19:29.76 and it brings good perspective 00:19:29.76\00:19:31.53 into everything. 00:19:31.53\00:19:33.00 So Matthew 6 verses 31 00:19:33.00\00:19:35.54 to 34. 00:19:35.54\00:19:37.14 >> So how does that tell us 00:20:12.54\00:20:14.08 about making a budget?
