00:00:51.21\00:00:53.25 The father's dreams of helping 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.45 desperately sick people to find 00:00:55.45\00:00:57.42 holistic healing, health, 00:00:57.42\00:00:59.65 and wellness. 00:00:59.65\00:01:00.76 That is the story of Phil 00:01:02.16\00:01:03.66 Brewer, the co-founder and 00:01:03.66\00:01:05.26 director of Silver Hills 00:01:05.26\00:01:06.86 Guesthouse and Spa, a living 00:01:06.86\00:01:09.30 lifestyle center in the 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.07 beautiful Maple Lake Valley 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.07 near Lumby, British Columbia. 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.37 >> Phil's father struggled to 00:01:16.00\00:01:17.81 stop smoking, and when he 00:01:17.81\00:01:19.44 finally kicked the habit and 00:01:19.44\00:01:21.28 started to experience freedom 00:01:21.28\00:01:23.45 from smoking, he continued to 00:01:23.45\00:01:25.41 advance in his journey towards 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.38 total health, improved 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.12 nutrition, sleep, and inner 00:01:29.12\00:01:31.19 peace, and a sense of self 00:01:31.19\00:01:32.92 control, relational wellness and 00:01:32.92\00:01:35.09 spiritual wholeness. 00:01:35.09\00:01:36.76 Phil's father had a dream to get 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.33 people out into nature because 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.83 he believed that nature is God's 00:01:41.83\00:01:44.77 physician. 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.23 His belief was that if people 00:01:46.23\00:01:47.70 could just escape the constant 00:01:47.70\00:01:49.80 pathological busyness, the rat 00:01:49.80\00:01:51.97 race and stress that imprisons 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.28 most men and women, they would 00:01:54.28\00:01:56.58 then naturally find the 00:01:56.58\00:01:58.38 fortitude to flourish. 00:01:58.38\00:02:00.52 >> Today, on It Is Written 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.55 Canada, Phil Brewer shares the 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.52 story of his father's influence 00:02:04.52\00:02:06.82 on his life. 00:02:06.82\00:02:08.39 Phil's own personal journey to 00:02:08.39\00:02:10.46 discover holistic health and 00:02:10.46\00:02:12.16 wellness, as well as how he was 00:02:12.16\00:02:14.40 able to get Silver Hills, this 00:02:14.40\00:02:16.70 living 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.14 wellness for the last 40 years. 00:02:26.14\00:02:29.11 [gentle guitar music playing] 00:02:31.41\00:02:34.42 [water spraying] 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.35 [PHIL] For me, Silver Hills 00:02:38.42\00:02:39.45 started when I was five 00:02:39.45\00:02:40.82 years old. 00:02:40.82\00:02:42.12 My father was an advocate of 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.53 health and he started a 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.13 vegetarian restaurant. 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.13 So that's 1955. 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.06 And you can imagine 1955, 00:02:49.06\00:02:51.13 vegetarian, the word, nobody 00:02:51.13\00:02:52.43 even knew what he was 00:02:52.43\00:02:53.30 talking about. 00:02:53.30\00:02:54.27 It lasted two years 00:02:54.27\00:02:55.44 and then went out of business. 00:02:55.44\00:02:57.57 But my dad was not out of the 00:02:57.57\00:02:58.01 But my dad was not out of the 00:02:58.27\00:02:58.94 health business. 00:02:58.94\00:02:59.87 He loved to teach health. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.71 And so he taught five-day stop 00:03:01.71\00:03:03.14 smoking plans. 00:03:03.14\00:03:04.05 And so as I was growing up, it 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.91 was five-day stop smoking plans 00:03:05.91\00:03:07.48 every month. 00:03:07.48\00:03:08.18 And I used to help run the film 00:03:08.25\00:03:09.15 And I used to help run the film 00:03:09.15\00:03:10.59 and, you know, projector and 00:03:10.59\00:03:12.75 work with the guests and 00:03:12.75\00:03:13.86 work with the guests and 00:03:13.86\00:03:14.09 visitors. 00:03:14.26\00:03:15.09 He had a very hard time stopping 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.26 smoking, very difficult time. 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.20 And so he'd like to help them. 00:03:20.20\00:03:21.86 But he- there were some people 00:03:21.86\00:03:22.93 that were like him, they would 00:03:22.93\00:03:23.93 struggle, like how do you stop 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.33 smoking? 00:03:25.33\00:03:26.37 And he thought, "If only we had 00:03:26.37\00:03:26.84 And he thought, "If only we had 00:03:27.14\00:03:27.80 a place in the country where, 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.27 you know, like, how could we 00:03:29.27\00:03:30.47 have a place in the country 00:03:30.47\00:03:31.64 where we could take the ones 00:03:31.64\00:03:32.71 that were really struggling, 00:03:32.71\00:03:33.61 get them away from all cigarette 00:03:33.61\00:03:35.61 smoking out in the country, 00:03:35.61\00:03:37.25 in nature, and then they would 00:03:37.25\00:03:38.71 have a chance of stopping." 00:03:38.71\00:03:39.71 And so I was raised with this 00:03:39.71\00:03:40.95 idea, you know what we should 00:03:40.95\00:03:41.78 do, we should have a centre 00:03:41.78\00:03:42.98 in the country. 00:03:42.98\00:03:44.19 [gentle guitar music continues] 00:03:44.19\00:03:47.16 い 00:03:47.16\00:03:50.09 I'm Phil Brewer, 00:03:50.46\00:03:52.43 co-founder of Silver Hills 00:03:52.43\00:03:53.60 Guesthouse, a live-in lifestyle 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.16 centre. 00:03:55.16\00:03:55.96 centre. 00:03:55.96\00:03:56.43 Next year will be 40 years that 00:03:56.73\00:03:58.10 we've been operating it. 00:03:58.10\00:03:59.70 [gentle guitar music continues] 00:03:59.70\00:04:02.77 い 00:04:02.77\00:04:05.77 So my wife and I came to this 00:04:09.81\00:04:11.05 valley in 1973, and it was a 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.55 missionary training program. 00:04:13.55\00:04:15.08 And so we were part of that 00:04:15.08\00:04:16.28 until 1984. 00:04:16.28\00:04:17.42 until 1984. 00:04:17.42\00:04:18.75 And in 19- actually, 1974, I 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.06 went down to a place in Alabama 00:04:21.06\00:04:23.83 where they had a lifestyle 00:04:23.83\00:04:25.16 centre to take some training so 00:04:25.16\00:04:26.83 I could help in the missionary 00:04:26.83\00:04:28.66 training program. 00:04:28.66\00:04:29.83 And it was Uchee Pines 00:04:29.83\00:04:30.93 Institute. 00:04:30.93\00:04:31.93 And down there, I mean, doctors, 00:04:31.93\00:04:34.54 two doctors were running it, 00:04:34.54\00:04:35.60 Dr. Agatha and Calvin Thrash. 00:04:35.60\00:04:37.94 To learn from them was fantastic 00:04:37.94\00:04:40.21 and they were also into 00:04:40.21\00:04:41.18 natural health. 00:04:41.18\00:04:41.98 They would give their patients 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.41 medication. 00:04:43.41\00:04:44.25 They'd say, "Here, take this 00:04:44.25\00:04:45.21 medication for your heart 00:04:45.21\00:04:46.21 disease, take this medication 00:04:46.21\00:04:47.15 for your diabetes." 00:04:47.15\00:04:48.28 But they would also give them a 00:04:48.28\00:04:49.38 lifestyle prescription. 00:04:49.38\00:04:51.02 And it's like, do exercise, 00:04:51.02\00:04:52.59 you know, drink water, get to 00:04:52.59\00:04:54.56 bed on time, they would do 00:04:54.56\00:04:55.66 that thing. 00:04:55.66\00:04:56.39 And so, you know, they were 00:04:56.39\00:04:57.53 doing that and they would, the 00:04:57.53\00:04:59.26 patient would come back, 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.06 you know, after a month for 00:05:01.06\00:05:03.43 a follow up, "How did you make 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.03 out with the exercise?" 00:05:05.03\00:05:06.53 "Well, you know, we had visitors 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.54 all month last month. 00:05:08.54\00:05:11.01 You know, I couldn't get out of 00:05:11.01\00:05:12.17 the house. 00:05:12.17\00:05:12.97 I was washing clothes, you know, 00:05:12.97\00:05:14.34 feeding visitors and things like 00:05:14.34\00:05:16.44 that so I just couldn't 00:05:16.44\00:05:17.48 get out." 00:05:17.48\00:05:18.38 "So how did you make out with 00:05:18.38\00:05:19.41 the medication?" 00:05:19.41\00:05:20.28 "Well, my back is itchy, you 00:05:20.28\00:05:21.35 know, I'm having problems with 00:05:21.35\00:05:22.35 my back, and..." 00:05:22.35\00:05:23.52 And they'd say, "Well, we'll 00:05:23.52\00:05:24.72 change that medication for you." 00:05:24.72\00:05:26.15 The next month they come back 00:05:26.15\00:05:27.36 for another re-evaluation. 00:05:27.36\00:05:28.82 "How did you make out with the 00:05:28.82\00:05:29.82 exercise?" 00:05:29.82\00:05:30.63 "Well, you wouldn't believe it, 00:05:30.63\00:05:31.53 Doctor, it rained every day." 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.60 So what they were doing is they 00:05:33.60\00:05:33.86 So what they were doing is they 00:05:34.36\00:05:34.63 were taking the medication, but 00:05:35.10\00:05:35.76 they weren't changing their 00:05:35.76\00:05:36.97 lifestyle. 00:05:36.97\00:05:37.83 It was kind of like my dad. 00:05:41.07\00:05:42.24 He was into lifestyle education, 00:05:42.24\00:05:43.91 they were into lifestyle 00:05:43.91\00:05:44.94 education. 00:05:44.94\00:05:45.67 I really wanted to have a place 00:05:45.67\00:05:46.88 where we could do lifestyle 00:05:46.88\00:05:48.01 education. 00:05:48.01\00:05:49.01 So when I came back, and by 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.38 1984, the missionary training 00:05:50.38\00:05:53.35 program, the missionaries had 00:05:53.35\00:05:54.42 gone out and the property was 00:05:54.42\00:05:55.55 still here and the board said to 00:05:55.55\00:05:56.15 still here and the board said to 00:05:56.25\00:05:56.65 me, "What do you wanna do 00:05:56.92\00:05:57.59 with this place?" 00:05:57.59\00:05:58.59 And I said, "I'd like to run a 00:05:58.59\00:05:59.69 lifestyle centre." 00:05:59.69\00:06:01.19 And so they said, "Go ahead." 00:06:01.19\00:06:02.62 Well, to run a lifestyle centre, 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.53 you have to have money. 00:06:04.53\00:06:05.79 [gentle piano music playing] 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.76 い 00:06:08.76\00:06:11.83 The neighbour invited me to 00:06:12.43\00:06:13.90 build him a woodshed 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.27 and garage combination. 00:06:15.27\00:06:17.91 And so I built him that, and he 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.61 really liked it. 00:06:19.61\00:06:20.48 And so he said, "Well, will you 00:06:20.48\00:06:21.28 build me a hobby barn?" 00:06:21.28\00:06:22.71 And so the hobby barn had a 00:06:22.71\00:06:23.98 hip roof on it, and it was 00:06:23.98\00:06:25.28 painted red and white trim and a 00:06:25.28\00:06:27.62 place for hay upstairs and two 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.12 horses on the... 00:06:29.12\00:06:30.15 He loved it. 00:06:30.15\00:06:31.29 And his son came out. 00:06:31.29\00:06:32.22 He saw what we had built and he 00:06:32.22\00:06:33.56 said, "Will you build me a house 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.52 on the property next door? 00:06:35.52\00:06:36.83 And so he gave us the plans to 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.56 look at, and we went over the 00:06:38.56\00:06:39.76 plans and we worked out all the 00:06:39.76\00:06:42.26 details, you know, the cabinets, 00:06:42.26\00:06:44.47 the plumbing, everything, 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.33 everything it needed. 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.70 And we gave him a price, showed 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.07 it to him, he liked the price 00:06:50.07\00:06:51.84 and signed the plans, we signed 00:06:51.84\00:06:53.34 the plans. 00:06:53.34\00:06:54.14 That was 1983. 00:06:54.14\00:06:55.61 1984, we went to start it, 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.65 but then we had inflation 00:06:57.65\00:06:58.98 at 33%...33.5%. 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.82 Everything we had quoted him; 00:07:01.82\00:07:03.79 windows, doors, drywall, 00:07:03.79\00:07:06.02 cabinets, every piece of 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.69 material, labour, everything had 00:07:07.69\00:07:09.16 gone up 33%. 00:07:09.16\00:07:10.99 And we had contracted, 00:07:10.99\00:07:13.33 we said we would build it for a 00:07:13.33\00:07:14.36 certain price and so we're gonna 00:07:14.36\00:07:15.40 build it for that price, right? 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.17 And so we went ahead with the 00:07:17.17\00:07:19.03 price that we had given him, 00:07:19.03\00:07:20.90 which meant we were gonna 00:07:20.90\00:07:21.97 build it for free. 00:07:21.97\00:07:23.44 Basically. 00:07:23.44\00:07:24.87 But you know, we- your word is 00:07:24.87\00:07:26.74 your word and we decided to go 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.34 ahead with it. 00:07:28.34\00:07:29.44 The problem was that the man 00:07:29.44\00:07:30.55 himself was a difficult man 00:07:30.55\00:07:32.58 to work for. 00:07:32.58\00:07:33.58 He was very hard to please, 00:07:33.58\00:07:34.98 very, very difficult. 00:07:34.98\00:07:35.95 Every person that I hired, he 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.25 would basically chase them off. 00:07:38.25\00:07:40.22 And, it was- it became a very 00:07:40.22\00:07:42.22 difficult thing and I worked for 00:07:42.22\00:07:43.39 him for a year and a half. 00:07:43.39\00:07:44.63 So, you know, after building 00:07:44.63\00:07:46.03 that house a year and a half, 00:07:46.03\00:07:48.76 the, not just the loss of money, 00:07:48.76\00:07:50.77 the stress, there was a lot of 00:07:50.77\00:07:52.00 stress involved and my 00:07:52.00\00:07:53.77 health broke. 00:07:53.77\00:07:54.77 I mean, I was really 00:07:54.77\00:07:55.87 a broken man. 00:07:55.87\00:07:57.21 I wasn't sleeping. 00:07:57.21\00:07:58.81 I didn't care to eat. 00:07:58.81\00:08:00.58 I was, you know, I was having a 00:08:00.58\00:08:02.28 terrible time with my memory. 00:08:02.28\00:08:04.05 I mean, I was hard to live with. 00:08:04.05\00:08:05.98 I told my wife, I said, you 00:08:05.98\00:08:07.18 know, I felt so sorry for her, 00:08:07.18\00:08:08.92 I said, "You know, if you wanted 00:08:08.92\00:08:09.98 to leave me, I would understand. 00:08:09.98\00:08:11.22 I mean, I'm suicidal, I can't 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.66 function, I can't..." 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.22 Everything was wrong. 00:08:15.22\00:08:16.22 I was just not working right. 00:08:16.22\00:08:16.39 I was just not working right. 00:08:16.93\00:08:17.63 [pensive music playing] 00:08:17.63\00:08:20.50 I would pray. 00:08:20.50\00:08:21.46 I mean, I loved to pray, I loved 00:08:21.46\00:08:23.00 to read, I liked to have 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.07 devotions in the morning. 00:08:24.07\00:08:24.97 I couldn't read, I couldn't- my 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.30 memory was so bad I couldn't 00:08:26.30\00:08:27.47 retain the thought from one 00:08:27.47\00:08:28.87 paragraph the next. 00:08:28.87\00:08:30.04 paragraph the next. 00:08:30.04\00:08:30.37 I literally couldn't read. 00:08:30.67\00:08:31.41 I mean, I couldn't believe it. 00:08:31.41\00:08:32.57 I mean, I would sit there and I 00:08:32.57\00:08:33.58 would try and read and it was 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.04 just confusion, it was a jumble 00:08:35.04\00:08:36.41 for me. 00:08:36.41\00:08:37.18 So my memory wasn't 00:08:37.18\00:08:38.25 working right. 00:08:38.25\00:08:39.31 And I used to pray, pray for my 00:08:39.31\00:08:40.72 family, I prayed for my wife, 00:08:40.72\00:08:41.95 and prayed for my kids. 00:08:41.95\00:08:43.42 And, "Did I pray for my wife? 00:08:43.42\00:08:44.55 I prayed for my wife and I 00:08:44.55\00:08:45.55 prayed for my kids." 00:08:45.55\00:08:46.86 And then, "Did I pray for 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.02 my wife?" 00:08:48.02\00:08:48.66 And then I prayed for my wife. 00:08:48.66\00:08:49.89 And then I said, "You know, I've 00:08:49.89\00:08:50.89 gotta do something about this." 00:08:50.89\00:08:52.36 So I sat down with a piece of 00:08:52.36\00:08:53.46 paper and I put my wife's name 00:08:53.46\00:08:55.23 at the top, I put my, each one 00:08:55.23\00:08:56.90 of my children down, and every 00:08:56.90\00:08:58.60 other person that I wanted to 00:08:58.60\00:08:59.63 pray about and every item that I 00:08:59.63\00:09:01.60 was praying for, put that down 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.14 on my prayer list and I put my 00:09:03.14\00:09:04.37 finger on it, and I would go 00:09:04.37\00:09:05.41 down it, and then I would know I 00:09:05.41\00:09:06.74 had done it. 00:09:06.74\00:09:07.74 [pensive music fades out] 00:09:07.74\00:09:10.65 And I was sitting there one day 00:09:14.55\00:09:15.52 and I looked across the room and 00:09:15.52\00:09:16.95 I saw my work boots, and I said, 00:09:16.95\00:09:18.35 "You know, I gotta get 00:09:18.35\00:09:19.95 back to work." [chuckles] 00:09:19.95\00:09:21.92 Year and a half, we hadn't 00:09:21.92\00:09:22.96 earned anything. 00:09:22.96\00:09:24.13 And here I am, I've gotta get 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.66 some work going. 00:09:25.66\00:09:26.90 And I said to my wife, "When we 00:09:26.90\00:09:28.20 go to town, I'm gonna look for a 00:09:28.20\00:09:29.60 new- I'm gonna go to the second 00:09:29.60\00:09:30.57 hand store and buy a new pair of 00:09:30.57\00:09:31.70 work boots." 00:09:31.70\00:09:32.90 We get to tell my wife says, 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.04 "Why don't you go to 00:09:34.04\00:09:34.97 Workwear World? 00:09:34.97\00:09:35.74 I said her, you know, "We can't 00:09:35.74\00:09:38.07 afford Workwear World boots." 00:09:38.07\00:09:40.61 "Well," she says, "Why don't you 00:09:40.61\00:09:41.61 go to Workwear World?" 00:09:41.61\00:09:43.11 And I thought, well, you know 00:09:43.11\00:09:44.28 what, even as sick as I was, 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.31 you know, I'd do anything to 00:09:46.31\00:09:47.62 please her. 00:09:47.62\00:09:48.42 I wanted to help her and, you 00:09:48.42\00:09:49.35 know, I thought, I'll go down 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.25 just to make, you know, to make 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.22 her satisfied. 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.86 So I go to Workwear World and I 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.06 go there, there they are, 00:09:55.06\00:09:55.99 Kaufman, double leather, triple 00:09:55.99\00:09:57.66 stitch, you know, and what I 00:09:57.66\00:09:58.83 would buy, $79.95, we don't 00:09:58.83\00:10:00.63 have $80. 00:10:00.63\00:10:01.60 There's no way. 00:10:01.60\00:10:03.20 I turn to walk out 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.17 and I see on the wall 00:10:04.17\00:10:05.77 a sign that says $9.99. 00:10:05.77\00:10:08.27 And there it was 00:10:09.00\00:10:10.57 in that, right underneath the 00:10:10.57\00:10:11.94 sign, there's work boots, 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.94 Kaufmans, double leather, 00:10:13.94\00:10:15.64 triple stitch. 00:10:15.64\00:10:17.31 I turned to the lady, I said, 00:10:17.31\00:10:18.28 you know, "What do you- what's 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.48 going on here? 00:10:19.48\00:10:20.32 I mean, this can't possibly, 00:10:20.32\00:10:21.45 you know, you can't sell in 00:10:21.45\00:10:22.58 the same store $80 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.82 and 99- $10. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.05 You can't have the same boots. 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.22 And I says, "What's wrong? 00:10:27.22\00:10:28.39 They got no glue, were the steel 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.06 shanks forgotten, you know, 00:10:30.06\00:10:31.93 built the wrong factory? 00:10:31.93\00:10:32.99 What's wrong?" 00:10:32.99\00:10:33.86 She said, "Nothing." 00:10:33.86\00:10:34.76 She says, "They're seven and a 00:10:34.76\00:10:35.73 half and we can't find workmen 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.53 that will buy them." 00:10:37.53\00:10:38.63 I looked down at my feet. 00:10:38.63\00:10:39.67 I got two, I got seven and a 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.10 halfs right here. 00:10:41.10\00:10:42.17 I give her $20, she gives me 00:10:42.17\00:10:43.67 change. 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.24 I'm walking towards my wife with 00:10:45.24\00:10:46.74 a smile on my face and she, I 00:10:46.74\00:10:48.24 could see on her face, she was 00:10:48.24\00:10:49.38 like really worried now. 00:10:49.38\00:10:50.98 I mean, before she could 00:10:50.98\00:10:52.38 understand, he's depressed, he's 00:10:52.38\00:10:53.92 ruined he's a wreck, he can't 00:10:53.92\00:10:55.32 sleep, he's... 00:10:55.32\00:10:56.28 Now he's smiling like a nut. 00:10:56.28\00:10:57.65 Like, what happened to you now? 00:10:57.65\00:11:00.26 Well, you know, what happened is 00:11:00.26\00:11:01.99 I had put on my prayer list 00:11:01.99\00:11:03.32 work boots. 00:11:03.32\00:11:04.26 The lady at the store didn't 00:11:04.26\00:11:05.39 know that. 00:11:05.39\00:11:06.16 My wife didn't know that. 00:11:06.16\00:11:07.40 There's only one being in the 00:11:07.40\00:11:08.40 universe to knew that and that 00:11:08.40\00:11:09.66 was God and He just told me He 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.20 loved me. 00:11:11.20\00:11:12.50 You know, I mean, that was, 00:11:12.50\00:11:13.60 I mean, I needed that. 00:11:13.60\00:11:14.74 I can't tell you how much I 00:11:14.74\00:11:15.87 needed to know that. 00:11:15.87\00:11:17.14 [uplifting music playing] 00:11:17.14\00:11:20.08 い 00:11:20.08\00:11:23.04 We wanted to start a lifestyle 00:11:23.55\00:11:24.85 centre, I mean, that's why I was 00:11:24.85\00:11:25.88 building the house for this guy 00:11:25.88\00:11:26.92 was, you know, the idea was to 00:11:26.92\00:11:28.52 earn money. 00:11:28.52\00:11:29.62 We didn't earn money, but we 00:11:29.62\00:11:30.65 were willing to start it in our 00:11:30.65\00:11:31.65 own home. 00:11:31.65\00:11:32.45 You know, we moved out of our 00:11:32.45\00:11:33.66 master bedroom into one of the 00:11:33.66\00:11:34.99 kids rooms and we got, 00:11:34.99\00:11:37.23 you know, I put on the prayer 00:11:37.23\00:11:39.09 request: guests. 00:11:39.09\00:11:40.63 You know, we needed to start off 00:11:40.63\00:11:41.96 with guests. 00:11:41.96\00:11:43.13 Well, Dr. He in Vancouver sent 00:11:43.13\00:11:45.17 us a lady and we started our- 00:11:45.17\00:11:47.27 then is when we started our 00:11:47.27\00:11:49.14 life- our first lifestyle guest 00:11:49.14\00:11:51.71 came right at that time. 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.04 And you know, I needed to have 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.24 that guest and I needed to 00:11:56.24\00:11:57.51 practice what I had been 00:11:57.51\00:11:58.58 learning for myself, how they 00:11:58.58\00:11:59.81 recover. 00:11:59.81\00:12:00.65 How do you recover from this? 00:12:00.65\00:12:02.42 And so we had our first guest. 00:12:02.42\00:12:03.99 And so we had our first guest. 00:12:03.99\00:12:04.25 [uplifting music concludes] 00:12:04.82\00:12:07.26 You know, it wasn't- probably 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.03 four guests later we had a lady 00:12:10.03\00:12:10.26 four guests later we had a lady 00:12:10.73\00:12:11.53 that came and she spent three 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.93 weeks with us. 00:12:13.93\00:12:14.93 And during that three week time, 00:12:14.93\00:12:16.46 there was a couple that came 00:12:16.46\00:12:17.57 to visit. 00:12:17.57\00:12:18.93 And this couple were cute. 00:12:18.93\00:12:21.10 They brought their own lunch 00:12:21.10\00:12:22.27 bucket, they had their food all 00:12:22.27\00:12:24.01 laid out, and they came to have 00:12:24.01\00:12:26.78 lunch to visit their friend who 00:12:26.78\00:12:28.54 had come from Airdrie. 00:12:28.54\00:12:29.44 They lived locally here, but 00:12:29.44\00:12:30.51 they knew her and they wanted to 00:12:30.51\00:12:31.65 see how she did, see? 00:12:31.65\00:12:33.52 So they came and they visited 00:12:33.52\00:12:34.48 her and they went away. 00:12:34.48\00:12:35.32 And toward the end of her stay, 00:12:35.32\00:12:37.05 they came back to check on her 00:12:37.05\00:12:38.62 to see how- what had changed, 00:12:38.62\00:12:39.82 how, you know, what had 00:12:39.82\00:12:41.02 improved. 00:12:41.02\00:12:42.56 And they were so quiet. 00:12:42.56\00:12:44.56 I mean, he virtually 00:12:44.56\00:12:46.09 didn't talk. 00:12:46.09\00:12:47.36 His wife talked some, but 00:12:47.36\00:12:48.70 very quiet couple. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.10 And at the end he said to me, 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.07 "Can I bring my wife 00:12:52.07\00:12:53.90 for three weeks?" 00:12:53.90\00:12:54.87 I said, "Sure!" 00:12:54.87\00:12:55.80 Guy's name was Bill. 00:12:55.80\00:12:57.51 And he comes along and 00:12:57.51\00:12:59.37 spent three weeks with us, 00:12:59.37\00:13:01.48 and I don't think he said 00:13:01.48\00:13:03.24 50 words the whole time he was 00:13:03.24\00:13:05.01 with us in three weeks. 00:13:05.01\00:13:06.28 Very, very... 00:13:06.28\00:13:07.15 And at the end of the 00:13:07.15\00:13:08.08 three weeks, he says, 00:13:08.08\00:13:08.98 "Can I help you?" 00:13:08.98\00:13:10.12 And I looked at him, I thought, 00:13:10.79\00:13:11.79 "Well, what what can you do?" 00:13:11.79\00:13:13.42 Like, I mean, "Yeah, you know, 00:13:13.42\00:13:15.19 we need help. 00:13:15.19\00:13:16.19 We're trying to build a 00:13:16.19\00:13:17.13 lifestyle centre. 00:13:17.13\00:13:18.13 We've got a, you know, a 00:13:18.13\00:13:19.09 foundation is poured, 00:13:19.09\00:13:20.03 we've got it framed up, 00:13:20.03\00:13:21.50 but we're gonna need help." 00:13:21.50\00:13:22.63 He said, "Well, what do you 00:13:22.63\00:13:23.60 need?" and I said, "Well, we 00:13:23.60\00:13:24.70 have a caterpillar tractor 00:13:24.70\00:13:25.80 have a caterpillar tractor 00:13:25.80\00:13:26.57 that's been- a D6 cat 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.04 tractor that's been donated to 00:13:29.04\00:13:30.44 us, but it doesn't work." 00:13:30.44\00:13:31.57 "Oh," he says, "I'll go get my 00:13:32.41\00:13:33.34 brother." 00:13:33.34\00:13:34.01 And he comes back and he's got a 00:13:34.01\00:13:35.28 set of coveralls on and his 00:13:35.28\00:13:36.78 brother's got coveralls on, they 00:13:36.78\00:13:37.91 got their wrenches and they pull 00:13:37.91\00:13:39.15 the tracks off this cat, they 00:13:39.15\00:13:41.35 rip the back end open. 00:13:41.35\00:13:42.58 They find a shaft inside, and 00:13:42.58\00:13:44.62 it's just a small shaft, they 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.65 get it second hand for $150. 00:13:46.65\00:13:49.22 They come back, put it back 00:13:49.22\00:13:50.23 together, put the tracks back on 00:13:50.23\00:13:51.59 the cat, drive it up the hill 00:13:51.59\00:13:53.23 and they push a road. 00:13:53.23\00:13:54.20 We needed a, desperately needed 00:13:54.20\00:13:55.50 a good road into the new 00:13:55.50\00:13:56.73 lifestyle centre we're building. 00:13:56.73\00:13:58.43 And he pushes it level. 00:13:58.43\00:13:59.90 I said, "Bill, how did you 00:13:59.90\00:14:01.24 do that?" 00:14:01.24\00:14:02.44 "Well," he says, "I used to run 00:14:02.44\00:14:03.47 cats in the seismograph lines in 00:14:03.47\00:14:05.77 Alberta," he said "I had..." 00:14:05.77\00:14:07.11 I think he said he had five 00:14:07.11\00:14:08.38 D7 cats that he was running 00:14:08.38\00:14:10.01 doing seismograph lines. 00:14:10.01\00:14:11.75 Wow, he's a cat driver, 00:14:11.75\00:14:13.05 you know, that's fabulous. 00:14:13.05\00:14:14.22 He says, "Now what do you need?" 00:14:14.22\00:14:16.15 I said, "Well, we need a set of 00:14:16.15\00:14:17.15 cabinets." 00:14:17.15\00:14:18.15 And he goes over and takes his 00:14:18.75\00:14:19.82 measuring tape, and he starts 00:14:19.82\00:14:20.92 with a piece of paper and 00:14:20.92\00:14:21.92 he's measuring and he's, 00:14:21.92\00:14:22.99 you know... 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.23 Phones me up from Vernon and he 00:14:24.23\00:14:25.46 says, "I need $600." 00:14:25.46\00:14:26.96 And I turned to my wife and I 00:14:28.10\00:14:29.53 said, "$600, I mean..." 00:14:29.53\00:14:31.93 She looks at me. 00:14:31.93\00:14:32.87 We started the building 00:14:32.87\00:14:33.87 with $1,600. 00:14:33.87\00:14:35.54 I mean, where are we gonna 00:14:36.44\00:14:37.34 get $600? 00:14:37.34\00:14:37.97 But we needed the cabinets, 00:14:37.97\00:14:39.14 right, and so she rounded it up. 00:14:39.14\00:14:41.18 Every cent that we had came out, 00:14:41.18\00:14:43.14 and we gave him $600. 00:14:43.14\00:14:45.41 And two weeks later he came with 00:14:45.41\00:14:46.55 cabinets - uppers, lowers, 00:14:46.55\00:14:49.38 everything. 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.12 I mean, it was 00:14:50.12\00:14:51.75 just imac- perfect. 00:14:51.75\00:14:53.96 Oak, he bought oak plywood 00:14:53.96\00:14:56.49 with the $600. 00:14:56.49\00:14:58.29 And so we had cabinets for the 00:14:58.29\00:15:00.36 kitchen, stainless steel sink, 00:15:00.36\00:15:02.30 pulls on all the drawers, 00:15:02.30\00:15:03.83 Arborite on top. 00:15:03.83\00:15:05.50 He brought us two 00:15:05.50\00:15:07.57 vanities for the two bathrooms 00:15:07.57\00:15:09.14 that we had in the place, plus a 00:15:09.14\00:15:10.91 vanity and sink 00:15:10.91\00:15:13.04 and uppers for the laundry room. 00:15:13.04\00:15:15.68 Okay, Bill, you know, this is 00:15:16.51\00:15:18.45 quite a guy. 00:15:18.45\00:15:19.25 I mean, he can he can drive cat 00:15:19.25\00:15:21.25 and he can build cabinets. 00:15:21.25\00:15:23.49 So then he says, "What do you 00:15:23.49\00:15:24.55 need now?" 00:15:24.55\00:15:25.42 I said, "Well, we need a shop." 00:15:25.42\00:15:26.52 And he goes out with this cat 00:15:27.69\00:15:28.86 and he's pushing back and forth 00:15:28.86\00:15:30.23 and back and forth. 00:15:30.23\00:15:31.46 Finally I go over and I said, 00:15:31.46\00:15:32.39 "Bill, what are you doing? 00:15:32.39\00:15:33.43 I mean, this is unbelievable. 00:15:33.43\00:15:34.63 This is like... 00:15:34.63\00:15:35.56 I mean, I want a two-car 00:15:35.56\00:15:36.60 garage." 00:15:36.60\00:15:37.50 He pulls out a tape, 100 feet 00:15:37.50\00:15:40.04 one way, 40 feet the other, 00:15:40.04\00:15:42.40 and he lays out the building, 00:15:42.40\00:15:44.24 it's 40 by 100. 00:15:44.24\00:15:46.24 I can't believe it. 00:15:47.04\00:15:48.58 Okay, so how are we gonna, 00:15:48.58\00:15:50.01 I mean, how are we gonna frame 00:15:50.01\00:15:51.01 it, how are we gonna get it...? 00:15:51.01\00:15:52.61 A fellow donated us the box, 00:15:52.61\00:15:53.92 A fellow donated us the box, 00:15:53.92\00:15:54.18 and Bill laid 00:15:54.35\00:15:55.55 3000 blocks himself. 00:15:55.55\00:15:57.49 I mean, I thought we needed 00:16:04.23\00:16:05.66 money, I thought, you know... 00:16:05.66\00:16:07.36 But, you know, the Lord showed 00:16:07.36\00:16:08.40 me He can give you 00:16:08.40\00:16:09.40 a pair of boots, 00:16:09.40\00:16:10.97 He can bring you a person, 00:16:10.97\00:16:12.97 and He can build things 00:16:12.97\00:16:15.57 with that person's talent 00:16:15.57\00:16:17.17 and donated material. 00:16:17.17\00:16:19.07 One thing right after the other. 00:16:19.07\00:16:20.51 Bill could wire, he could plumb, 00:16:20.51\00:16:22.94 he could mechanic, he could 00:16:22.94\00:16:25.05 run a cat. 00:16:25.05\00:16:26.25 I mean, there was- I don't think 00:16:26.25\00:16:27.75 there's anything he couldn't do. 00:16:27.75\00:16:29.18 The Lord send us the right man. 00:16:29.18\00:16:30.62 That was the found- that was the 00:16:30.62\00:16:31.72 beginning of Silver Hills. 00:16:31.72\00:16:32.02 beginning of Silver Hills. 00:16:32.39\00:16:32.89 We opened the guesthouse in 00:16:34.46\00:16:35.96 1985, right here. 00:16:35.96\00:16:37.79 So here, you know, God sends 00:16:42.06\00:16:43.83 us a man, I mean, 00:16:43.83\00:16:45.63 the man who has the talent. 00:16:45.63\00:16:47.27 That's what we needed. 00:16:47.27\00:16:48.87 And, he had all the talents that 00:16:48.87\00:16:51.14 we needed. 00:16:51.14\00:16:52.04 We, at the time, we had 00:16:52.04\00:16:53.34 plumbed the guesthouse. 00:16:53.34\00:16:54.41 We had it all plumbed. 00:16:54.41\00:16:55.41 We had set up rads all over the 00:16:55.41\00:16:57.28 house, and we had put- the 00:16:57.28\00:16:59.18 copper pipe had been hooked up 00:16:59.18\00:17:00.65 to the rads, but I didn't have 00:17:00.65\00:17:02.32 my boiler hooked up. 00:17:02.32\00:17:03.72 And a man came along, actually a 00:17:04.22\00:17:06.15 man- a couple came along to help 00:17:06.15\00:17:07.56 us, they came to see what we 00:17:07.56\00:17:08.82 were doing and to volunteer. 00:17:08.82\00:17:10.69 And, he says, "What do you 00:17:10.69\00:17:12.06 need next?" 00:17:12.06\00:17:12.96 I said, "Well, I need my boiler 00:17:12.96\00:17:14.13 hooked up." 00:17:14.13\00:17:15.43 And he goes over to a cardboard 00:17:15.43\00:17:17.13 box and he rips the flap off and 00:17:17.13\00:17:18.80 he takes a crayon and he starts 00:17:18.80\00:17:20.20 writing on this flap. 00:17:20.20\00:17:22.24 And he says, "Go to town and get 00:17:22.24\00:17:24.11 this," and I says, "What for?" 00:17:24.11\00:17:25.24 He says, "To hook up 00:17:25.24\00:17:26.34 your boiler." 00:17:26.34\00:17:27.38 I says, do you know how to hook 00:17:27.38\00:17:28.51 up a boiler, wood boiler?" 00:17:28.51\00:17:30.15 "That's what I do for a living!" 00:17:30.15\00:17:31.45 He says, "Of course I could-" 00:17:31.45\00:17:33.35 So off to town I go. 00:17:33.35\00:17:35.12 You know, I was, I mean, 00:17:35.12\00:17:36.79 I have to say, you know, 00:17:36.79\00:17:38.25 the Lord gave me a pair of boots 00:17:38.25\00:17:40.62 and He gave me Bill 00:17:40.62\00:17:42.39 and He gave me Len 00:17:42.39\00:17:43.76 who could hook up boilers. 00:17:43.76\00:17:45.06 And it's been- the program was 00:17:45.06\00:17:46.39 His program. 00:17:46.39\00:17:47.23 I mean, these are His children. 00:17:47.23\00:17:48.50 These are His- the children that 00:17:48.50\00:17:49.86 He needed- like I was. 00:17:49.86\00:17:51.33 I was sick. 00:17:51.33\00:17:52.33 He has children that are sick. 00:17:52.33\00:17:53.57 They have all kinds- they have 00:17:53.57\00:17:54.57 heart disease, they have 00:17:54.57\00:17:55.54 diabetes, they have depression, 00:17:55.54\00:17:57.21 all kinds of illnesses. 00:17:57.21\00:17:58.91 I gotta tell you about a fellow 00:18:02.38\00:18:03.68 that came. 00:18:03.68\00:18:04.61 So here we are, we're walking 00:18:04.61\00:18:06.01 home, it's October, we're 00:18:06.01\00:18:06.25 home, it's October, we're 00:18:06.65\00:18:07.28 walking up the driveway and this 00:18:07.35\00:18:08.78 car pulls up. 00:18:08.78\00:18:09.92 German people, broken English. 00:18:09.92\00:18:11.79 "Is this a place to stay?" 00:18:11.79\00:18:13.05 And I said to Eileen, "Do we 00:18:13.05\00:18:14.22 have any rooms?" and she says, 00:18:14.22\00:18:15.52 "Yeah, we have a couple rooms." 00:18:15.52\00:18:16.52 And I said, "Would you folks 00:18:16.52\00:18:18.19 wanna stay? 00:18:18.19\00:18:19.63 Do you wanna stay here?" 00:18:19.63\00:18:20.53 And they said, "Sure!" 00:18:20.53\00:18:21.33 "Okay, we'll stay..." 00:18:21.33\00:18:22.26 And so the next morning at 00:18:22.26\00:18:23.37 breakfast, I'm saying, you know, 00:18:23.37\00:18:24.50 like, "How long have you been 00:18:24.50\00:18:25.60 in Canada?" and they said, 00:18:25.60\00:18:26.90 "Six weeks." 00:18:26.90\00:18:27.97 I said, "What are you 00:18:27.97\00:18:28.97 looking for? 00:18:28.97\00:18:29.80 You wanna buy land here or, 00:18:29.80\00:18:30.84 you know, what do you... 00:18:30.84\00:18:32.37 Six weeks?" 00:18:32.37\00:18:33.58 And Uwe, he says to me, "We were 00:18:33.58\00:18:35.84 looking for this place." 00:18:35.84\00:18:37.21 [calm music playing] 00:18:37.21\00:18:40.22 They actually stayed until 00:18:41.02\00:18:42.48 they had to fly out of Calgary 00:18:42.48\00:18:44.02 on Thursday, so they stayed 00:18:44.02\00:18:45.09 until Wednesday and we made 00:18:45.09\00:18:46.55 friends with them and chatted. 00:18:46.55\00:18:47.66 It was difficult because it was 00:18:47.66\00:18:48.96 English and German. 00:18:48.96\00:18:50.59 And I thought, that's it, 00:18:50.59\00:18:51.59 they're gone. 00:18:51.59\00:18:52.49 We'll never see them again. 00:18:52.49\00:18:54.00 Next fall- next spring, they 00:18:54.00\00:18:55.46 phoned, said, "We wanna come 00:18:55.46\00:18:56.83 back to Silver Hills 00:18:56.83\00:18:58.50 for three weeks." 00:18:58.50\00:18:59.60 So they came. 00:18:59.60\00:19:01.30 And while we were walking 00:19:01.30\00:19:02.37 on the nature trail, 00:19:02.37\00:19:04.14 Uwe says to me, "You know 00:19:04.14\00:19:06.17 what happened last year?" and I 00:19:06.17\00:19:07.38 said, "No, I don't really know 00:19:07.38\00:19:08.41 what happened." 00:19:08.41\00:19:09.18 He says, "Well, when we flew 00:19:09.18\00:19:10.25 into Calgary coming to Canada, 00:19:10.25\00:19:12.61 we had promised our daughter no 00:19:12.61\00:19:13.98 more smoking. 00:19:13.98\00:19:14.78 We were smoking less, 00:19:14.78\00:19:16.02 but we hadn't quit 00:19:16.02\00:19:17.29 till we drove in here 00:19:17.29\00:19:18.82 and we realized this was a no 00:19:18.82\00:19:20.06 smoking place, and we knew 00:19:20.06\00:19:22.42 that we were in the right spot." 00:19:22.42\00:19:23.86 [calm music continues] 00:19:23.86\00:19:26.86 Well, Uwe and Dorothy came back 00:19:27.23\00:19:28.66 year after year. 00:19:28.66\00:19:29.53 They kept coming back and 00:19:29.53\00:19:31.23 each time they made a change. 00:19:31.23\00:19:32.83 And Uwe, as you go closer to 00:19:32.83\00:19:34.77 retirement, he told me, he says, 00:19:34.77\00:19:36.14 "When I retire, I'm coming here 00:19:36.14\00:19:37.41 to work." 00:19:37.41\00:19:38.31 Now Uwe phoned me last year, 00:19:38.81\00:19:41.74 he's in his 80s now, 00:19:41.74\00:19:43.81 and he said to me, "Phil, 00:19:43.81\00:19:46.45 Dorothy and I wanna come back 00:19:46.45\00:19:47.85 one more time. 00:19:47.85\00:19:48.95 We wanna come back and say 00:19:48.95\00:19:49.98 goodbye." 00:19:49.98\00:19:51.05 So he comes all the way over 00:19:51.05\00:19:52.09 from Germany and, you know, you 00:19:52.09\00:19:53.56 could tell he was starting to 00:19:53.56\00:19:54.66 show his age, and I got him on 00:19:54.66\00:19:55.86 the nature trails, got him 00:19:55.86\00:19:57.16 walking. 00:19:57.16\00:19:58.26 And you could see his, him 00:19:58.26\00:19:59.83 started to, you know, his eyes 00:19:59.83\00:20:01.06 lighten up and he started to get 00:20:01.06\00:20:02.36 feeling better. 00:20:02.36\00:20:03.16 And he phoned me and he says, 00:20:03.16\00:20:04.30 "I'm coming back next year." 00:20:04.30\00:20:05.57 He was saying, they're not gonna 00:20:05.57\00:20:06.53 say goodbye, I'm gonna 00:20:06.53\00:20:07.47 keep on living. 00:20:07.47\00:20:08.57 So it's just really good to see 00:20:08.57\00:20:10.87 Uwe and Dorothy and the 00:20:10.87\00:20:12.04 improvements they made. 00:20:12.04\00:20:13.07 [inspirational music playing] 00:20:15.14\00:20:18.15 い 00:20:18.15\00:20:19.45 So people asked me, you know, 00:20:19.45\00:20:20.72 what do you teach at Silver 00:20:20.72\00:20:21.92 Hills, I mean, what's the 00:20:21.92\00:20:22.82 program, what's the foundation 00:20:22.82\00:20:24.02 of the program? 00:20:24.02\00:20:24.89 Well, we call it the Eight 00:20:24.89\00:20:26.09 Natural Doctors. 00:20:26.09\00:20:27.66 We start off with exercise. 00:20:27.66\00:20:30.06 You know, the foundation of good 00:20:30.06\00:20:31.29 health is exercise. 00:20:31.29\00:20:31.56 health is exercise. 00:20:31.86\00:20:32.73 And so we have nature trails, 00:20:32.73\00:20:34.56 we have 90 acres, and we take 00:20:34.56\00:20:36.00 people out into nature. 00:20:36.00\00:20:37.87 [inspirational music continues] 00:20:37.87\00:20:40.10 And we have water, we teach them 00:20:40.10\00:20:41.47 the eliminary organs 00:20:41.47\00:20:42.64 and the importance of 00:20:42.64\00:20:43.74 drinking water. 00:20:43.74\00:20:44.61 And we teach them how to deep 00:20:44.61\00:20:45.87 breathe and how breathing helps 00:20:45.87\00:20:48.51 them sleep at night. 00:20:48.51\00:20:49.74 It helps them to relax. 00:20:49.74\00:20:51.41 い 00:20:51.41\00:20:53.25 And we have a whole probably 00:20:53.25\00:20:54.98 four classes on nutrition. 00:20:54.98\00:20:56.25 We start off with the Western 00:20:56.25\00:20:57.52 diet and then we do protein, we 00:20:57.52\00:20:58.82 do carbohydrates, we do fats. 00:20:58.82\00:21:00.96 We do the physiology of 00:21:00.96\00:21:02.12 digestion. 00:21:02.12\00:21:03.26 That's one of my favourites, and 00:21:03.26\00:21:04.39 it's one of their favourites. 00:21:04.39\00:21:05.46 When they understand how they 00:21:05.46\00:21:06.63 digest their food, then they 00:21:06.63\00:21:08.33 look at how they eat their food 00:21:08.33\00:21:09.70 somewhat differently, and they 00:21:09.70\00:21:11.23 really appreciate that one. 00:21:11.23\00:21:12.73 We do sunlight, we do rest, 00:21:14.37\00:21:15.17 We do sunlight, we do rest, 00:21:15.17\00:21:16.37 and we do one that we call 00:21:16.37\00:21:17.57 abstemiousness, and people say, 00:21:17.57\00:21:19.07 "What do you mean? 00:21:19.07\00:21:20.11 Well, if it's a poison, we try 00:21:20.11\00:21:21.31 to get them to leave it out of 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.38 their lifestyle. 00:21:22.38\00:21:23.38 And we also give them cooking 00:21:23.38\00:21:24.55 school classes. 00:21:24.55\00:21:25.65 We teach them how to cook, how 00:21:25.65\00:21:27.82 to change your cooking, because 00:21:27.82\00:21:29.05 we're gonna teach them to move 00:21:29.05\00:21:30.05 away from the diet they may be 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.59 on to a plant-based diet. 00:21:31.59\00:21:33.42 [inspirational music continues] 00:21:33.42\00:21:36.42 い 00:21:36.42\00:21:37.83 And the last one, of course, my 00:21:37.83\00:21:39.53 favourite because of my work 00:21:39.53\00:21:41.06 boots, is trust in divine power. 00:21:41.06\00:21:43.50 And, you know, I mean, the whole 00:21:43.50\00:21:45.40 program is built on that. 00:21:45.40\00:21:46.80 But we teach them that. 00:21:46.80\00:21:48.14 And, you know, it's not- 00:21:48.14\00:21:49.14 trust in divine power, you know, 00:21:49.14\00:21:50.41 like when you say that people 00:21:50.41\00:21:51.81 kinda, you know, like, "Okay, 00:21:51.81\00:21:53.11 you're gonna get religious on 00:21:53.11\00:21:54.18 me," and I tell them, you know, 00:21:54.18\00:21:55.31 "This is not a religion. 00:21:55.31\00:21:55.38 "This is not a religion. 00:21:55.94\00:21:56.98 This is a relationship. 00:21:56.98\00:21:58.78 You have a heavenly Father loves 00:21:58.78\00:22:00.42 you, and He wants to give you a 00:22:00.42\00:22:02.55 pair of work boots. 00:22:02.55\00:22:03.62 He wants to give you that same 00:22:03.62\00:22:05.39 experience of having your 00:22:05.39\00:22:07.12 experience with Him, where you 00:22:07.12\00:22:08.66 came in need and He supplied 00:22:08.66\00:22:10.83 that need and showed you that 00:22:10.83\00:22:11.83 He loves you. 00:22:11.83\00:22:12.86 い 00:22:12.86\00:22:15.83 We've got the Eight Natural 00:22:16.60\00:22:17.63 Doctors, we've got the 00:22:17.63\00:22:18.63 nature trails. 00:22:18.63\00:22:20.17 And, you know, we decided that 00:22:20.17\00:22:21.50 we wanted to do it in a way that 00:22:21.50\00:22:23.04 people would be- felt like they 00:22:23.04\00:22:24.17 were pampered. 00:22:24.17\00:22:25.27 were pampered. 00:22:25.27\00:22:25.67 So we built a spa. 00:22:25.81\00:22:27.18 い 00:22:27.18\00:22:30.15 And we have five massage rooms. 00:22:38.62\00:22:41.19 We do detox wraps, we have two 00:22:41.19\00:22:43.86 infrared saunas, we have a steam 00:22:43.86\00:22:45.83 room, we have a hot tub. 00:22:45.83\00:22:47.36 い 00:22:47.36\00:22:50.27 You know, so we pamper them. 00:22:54.97\00:22:56.84 You know, so not only are they 00:22:56.84\00:22:58.17 getting instruction 00:22:58.17\00:23:00.28 and exercise and gourmet meals, 00:23:00.28\00:23:03.18 but they also- we do it 00:23:03.18\00:23:04.25 in a spa setting 00:23:04.25\00:23:05.68 and out in nature. 00:23:05.68\00:23:06.72 You see, my dad, 00:23:06.72\00:23:08.32 I think he was right. 00:23:08.32\00:23:09.45 If we can get people away 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.25 from the stresses, from the 00:23:11.25\00:23:12.59 city, from all the things, 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.26 get them out in nature. 00:23:14.26\00:23:15.52 You know, he was always telling 00:23:15.52\00:23:16.69 me, he said, "Nature 00:23:16.69\00:23:18.26 is God's physician." 00:23:18.26\00:23:19.86 [inspirational music continues] 00:23:19.86\00:23:22.83 My father came out to 00:23:24.70\00:23:26.20 visit Silver Hills and 00:23:26.20\00:23:29.04 he loved it when he came here. 00:23:29.04\00:23:30.97 He saw his vision, he saw his 00:23:30.97\00:23:32.57 dream, you know, because he 00:23:32.57\00:23:33.91 loved to minister to people. 00:23:33.91\00:23:35.28 And he saw this whole project 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.41 now was ministering to people. 00:23:37.41\00:23:39.01 You know, he used to always say, 00:23:42.48\00:23:44.19 you know, "The angels long 00:23:44.19\00:23:46.12 to use our hands and our voices 00:23:46.12\00:23:48.22 in ministering to others." 00:23:48.22\00:23:50.03 And when he saw this place, he 00:23:50.03\00:23:51.93 says, "That's exactly what's 00:23:51.93\00:23:53.03 happening here. 00:23:53.03\00:23:53.90 The angels love to use our hands 00:23:53.90\00:23:56.13 and our voices to minister to 00:23:56.13\00:23:57.57 other people." 00:23:57.57\00:23:58.63 >> In his darkest hours, God 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.11 provided Phil with a simple pair 00:24:05.11\00:24:07.68 of work boots to reveal His love 00:24:07.68\00:24:10.61 for him. 00:24:10.61\00:24:11.85 And that's what Phil needed 00:24:11.85\00:24:14.02 to get his health back. 00:24:14.02\00:24:16.02 His father had taught him so 00:24:16.02\00:24:17.92 much about health. 00:24:17.92\00:24:19.05 He had studied health 00:24:19.05\00:24:20.19 academically for himself, but 00:24:20.19\00:24:21.96 then when he had to get his own 00:24:21.96\00:24:23.86 health back, he began to dig 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.46 deep and really study it. 00:24:26.46\00:24:29.26 And what he learned became the 00:24:29.26\00:24:31.07 foundation of what he teaches 00:24:31.07\00:24:33.44 at Silver Hills. 00:24:33.44\00:24:34.70 And it all began with the 00:24:35.97\00:24:37.64 revelation of God's love through 00:24:37.64\00:24:39.34 a pair of work boots that gave 00:24:39.34\00:24:41.81 him the direction that he needed 00:24:41.81\00:24:44.18 to move a mountain of obstacles. 00:24:44.18\00:24:47.15 >> Like so many others who 00:24:48.12\00:24:49.78 sincerely dedicated their lives 00:24:49.78\00:24:51.79 to God's service, Phil Brewer 00:24:51.79\00:24:53.99 was confronted by obstacles and 00:24:53.99\00:24:56.69 overwhelmed by trials. 00:24:56.69\00:24:59.09 Even his prayers seemed 00:24:59.09\00:25:00.90 hard to speak. 00:25:00.90\00:25:02.70 Like God's people in the Bible, 00:25:02.70\00:25:04.67 we often question God. 00:25:04.67\00:25:06.94 "If You're leading me, why do 00:25:06.94\00:25:08.60 all these problems keep 00:25:08.60\00:25:09.94 coming at me?" 00:25:09.94\00:25:11.51 >> The reality is that it is 00:25:11.51\00:25:13.38 because God is leading you that 00:25:13.38\00:25:15.58 these overwhelming difficulties 00:25:15.58\00:25:17.65 keep coming into your life. 00:25:17.65\00:25:19.61 The Lord asks this question in 00:25:19.61\00:25:21.88 the Bible... 00:25:21.88\00:25:23.28 >> Have you ever watched a 00:25:36.03\00:25:37.37 potter working with clay? 00:25:37.37\00:25:39.57 The potter takes the clay and 00:25:39.57\00:25:41.40 moulds it according to his will. 00:25:41.40\00:25:43.84 He squeezes it and works it. 00:25:43.84\00:25:46.44 He tears it apart and presses 00:25:46.44\00:25:48.24 it together. 00:25:48.24\00:25:49.58 He wets it and then dries it. 00:25:49.58\00:25:52.11 He lets it lie for a while 00:25:52.11\00:25:53.78 without touching it. 00:25:53.78\00:25:55.48 And when it is perfectly 00:25:55.48\00:25:57.45 pliable, flexible, 00:25:57.45\00:25:59.75 bendable, able to be moulded 00:25:59.75\00:26:02.06 according to the potter's will, 00:26:02.06\00:26:04.76 then he continues the work of 00:26:04.76\00:26:06.63 making it a vessel, a pot, 00:26:06.63\00:26:09.06 or a container of some kind. 00:26:09.06\00:26:11.67 He forms it into shape and on 00:26:11.67\00:26:13.74 the wheel trims and polishes it. 00:26:13.74\00:26:16.64 He dries it in the sun and bakes 00:26:16.64\00:26:18.51 it in the oven. 00:26:18.51\00:26:20.04 Only in this way does it become 00:26:20.04\00:26:22.38 a vessel fit for use. 00:26:22.38\00:26:25.11 >> This is how God, the Master 00:26:25.11\00:26:27.12 Potter, desires to mould and 00:26:27.12\00:26:28.78 fashion you and me. 00:26:28.78\00:26:30.75 As the clay is in the hands of 00:26:30.75\00:26:32.75 the potter, so am I, and so are 00:26:32.75\00:26:34.92 you to be in God's hands. 00:26:34.92\00:26:37.43 We are not to try to do the work 00:26:38.39\00:26:40.63 of the potter. 00:26:40.63\00:26:41.70 Our part is to yield ourselves, 00:26:41.70\00:26:43.97 to be moulded by the master 00:26:43.97\00:26:46.30 worker. 00:26:46.30\00:26:47.47 >> That's how you become the 00:26:47.47\00:26:49.00 hands, the feet, and the voice 00:26:49.00\00:26:50.71 of Jesus and His angels 00:26:50.71\00:26:52.54 to others. 00:26:52.54\00:26:54.04 Like Phil and his entire family 00:26:54.04\00:26:56.44 love to use their hands and 00:26:56.44\00:26:58.48 their voices to minister to 00:26:58.48\00:27:00.25 other people, you too can be 00:27:00.25\00:27:02.98 truly possessed of one purpose, 00:27:02.98\00:27:05.65 and that
