い 00:00:03.30\00:00:06.20 >> Welcome to It Is Written 00:00:38.50\00:00:39.83 Canada. 00:00:39.83\00:00:40.64 Thank you for joining us. 00:00:40.64\00:00:41.64 We are in the Philippines 00:00:41.64\00:00:43.47 in a very remote barangay 00:00:43.47\00:00:46.27 by the name of Salvacion 00:00:46.27\00:00:47.68 or "Salvation" in English, and 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.35 it's quite an appropriate name. 00:00:50.35\00:00:51.88 But we are here with 00:00:51.88\00:00:53.78 Steve Matthews, who is the CEO 00:00:53.78\00:00:56.02 of ADRA Canada, and also Teresa 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.75 Ferreira, who is with 00:00:58.75\00:01:00.82 philanthropy and marketing 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.86 for ADRA Canada. 00:01:02.86\00:01:04.23 And they're gonna share with us 00:01:04.23\00:01:05.86 some things about this location. 00:01:05.86\00:01:07.96 >> Steve and Teresa, thank you 00:01:09.26\00:01:11.33 so much for inviting us with you 00:01:11.33\00:01:13.27 on this journey. 00:01:13.27\00:01:14.60 It was quite a road getting up 00:01:14.60\00:01:17.31 in this mountainous region. 00:01:17.31\00:01:19.31 The pathway was so small and we 00:01:19.31\00:01:21.28 were like, "Oh, are the wheels 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.91 even gonna fit here?" 00:01:22.91\00:01:24.21 And so I can understand why they 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.48 couldn't come up, we couldn't 00:01:26.48\00:01:27.58 come up in a van, so they had to 00:01:27.58\00:01:29.28 send a 4x4 to take us up 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.85 into this village over here. 00:01:31.85\00:01:33.42 So thank you once again for 00:01:33.42\00:01:35.19 inviting us 00:01:35.19\00:01:36.66 to join you here. 00:01:36.66\00:01:38.06 >> It's great to have you with 00:01:38.06\00:01:39.03 us as well. 00:01:39.03\00:01:40.06 >> Steve, is there perhaps a 00:01:40.43\00:01:42.86 story behind the name Salvacion, 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.57 the name of the village? 00:01:45.57\00:01:46.97 I'm sure I'm not saying it 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.34 properly, but in English it 00:01:48.34\00:01:49.64 sounds like "Salvation," it's 00:01:49.64\00:01:50.71 spelled that way. 00:01:50.71\00:01:51.97 >> So Salvacion is the barangay. 00:01:52.17\00:01:55.14 And speaking with the captain of 00:01:55.14\00:01:57.01 the-- this barangay, 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.75 the captain is kind of like the 00:01:59.75\00:02:01.18 head elected official for the 00:02:01.18\00:02:02.38 community, were sharing that 00:02:02.38\00:02:04.15 because of the location of the 00:02:04.15\00:02:05.32 community, that's how it got its 00:02:05.32\00:02:07.22 name because it's in an area 00:02:07.22\00:02:08.89 that's really not very 00:02:08.89\00:02:10.13 susceptible to, whether it's, 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.83 you know, tsunamis or flooding, 00:02:12.83\00:02:15.46 landslides, it's just kind of 00:02:15.46\00:02:16.80 that area of salvation. 00:02:16.80\00:02:18.77 And they're-- they feel very 00:02:18.77\00:02:20.70 protected because of where it's 00:02:20.70\00:02:21.97 located. 00:02:21.97\00:02:23.00 >> But this village is so 00:02:23.41\00:02:25.77 remote, how do they make a 00:02:25.77\00:02:28.44 living here, like, how do they 00:02:28.44\00:02:29.71 get all their supplies, their 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.28 food, how do they manage 00:02:31.28\00:02:32.98 being so far away from 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.48 any close-by cities? 00:02:35.48\00:02:37.15 >> It's interesting you ask that 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.59 question because being so 00:02:39.59\00:02:41.26 remote, you wonder what sustains 00:02:41.26\00:02:43.32 this village, right, 00:02:43.32\00:02:44.66 this barangay. 00:02:44.66\00:02:46.03 And so they have three ways here 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.66 in Salvacion that they do that. 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.17 The first way is 00:02:50.17\00:02:52.17 if you look around, we're 00:02:52.17\00:02:53.27 sitting in a coconut grove. 00:02:53.27\00:02:55.27 And so coconuts is their first 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.07 source of livelihood. 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.87 Their second source of 00:02:58.87\00:02:59.81 livelihood is from abaca. 00:02:59.81\00:03:01.88 I don't know if you saw as we 00:03:01.88\00:03:02.88 travelled up here, there were 00:03:02.88\00:03:04.01 these long, fibrous looking 00:03:04.01\00:03:05.85 hairs that were draped over 00:03:05.85\00:03:06.95 lines, and so that's called 00:03:06.95\00:03:09.15 "abaca" and they utilize that 00:03:09.15\00:03:11.82 to sell. 00:03:11.82\00:03:12.85 So that's their source, but then 00:03:12.85\00:03:14.49 how it's utilized out in the 00:03:14.49\00:03:15.92 market is for clothing and 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.19 filling mattresses. 00:03:18.19\00:03:19.89 So that's their second source. 00:03:19.89\00:03:21.06 Their third source of income, 00:03:21.06\00:03:22.66 if you look around, you'll see 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.37 rice fields. 00:03:24.37\00:03:25.70 And so those are those three 00:03:25.70\00:03:26.77 sources of income. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.40 I know that it's an amazingly 00:03:28.40\00:03:31.41 beautiful vegetation as you look 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.07 around and so you see how 00:03:33.07\00:03:34.91 they've really utilized their 00:03:34.91\00:03:36.95 surroundings to thrive 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.51 as a community. 00:03:38.51\00:03:39.75 >> You know, what also amazes me 00:03:40.65\00:03:42.72 is how industrious they are. 00:03:42.72\00:03:45.49 You know, all of these 00:03:45.49\00:03:46.72 processes, even to get the 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.26 fibres off that banana plant, 00:03:48.26\00:03:50.49 that's hard work to do that 00:03:50.49\00:03:53.16 and to harvest the coconuts 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.30 and the rice. 00:03:55.30\00:03:56.23 I mean, all of that is hard work 00:03:56.23\00:03:57.93 and they're so industrious, 00:03:57.93\00:03:59.30 working together as a community, 00:03:59.30\00:04:02.47 children are involved. 00:04:02.47\00:04:03.54 And so it's so amazing to see 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.61 how hardworking and dedicated 00:04:05.61\00:04:08.94 these people are. 00:04:08.94\00:04:10.48 >> And one of the big parts of 00:04:11.11\00:04:13.45 this project, I know that we're 00:04:13.45\00:04:14.72 gonna look into it, is a school 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.85 where they're actually, 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.19 ADRA is teaching within the 00:04:18.19\00:04:19.69 school and teaching agriculture. 00:04:19.69\00:04:22.16 >> Yeah, and that agriculture, 00:04:22.16\00:04:23.86 what we're doing is able to work 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.73 within the curriculum 00:04:25.73\00:04:26.43 of the school. 00:04:26.43\00:04:27.60 One of the teachers that's there 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.70 is kind of been trained as an 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.63 agricultural specialist, so he's 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.17 teaching the grade 4 to 6 00:04:33.17\00:04:34.67 classes about ways to grow 00:04:34.67\00:04:37.54 different types of crops from 00:04:37.54\00:04:39.64 native crops that they have to 00:04:39.64\00:04:41.38 some other introduced crops that 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.11 have been brought in as well. 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.05 But it's able to feed, you know, 00:04:45.05\00:04:47.32 the participants in the program. 00:04:47.32\00:04:49.38 And they even shared with us 00:04:49.38\00:04:50.35 that they can even sell a little 00:04:50.35\00:04:51.59 bit extra to those that aren't 00:04:51.59\00:04:53.96 part of the program as well. 00:04:53.96\00:04:55.62 >> Mmm. 00:04:55.62\00:04:56.26 I'm looking forward to talking 00:04:56.26\00:04:57.03 to them. 00:04:57.03\00:04:57.83 >> Yeah, absolutely. 00:04:57.83\00:04:58.99 >> What else is ADRA doing 00:04:59.29\00:05:01.56 in this little village? 00:16:08.06\00:16:09.73 [TRANSLATION] Yes. 00:16:13.10\00:16:14.24 ADRA had many training sessions 00:16:14.24\00:16:16.20 on how to grow organic 00:16:16.20\00:16:17.57 vegetables right around 00:16:17.57\00:16:19.04 our homes. 00:16:19.04\00:16:20.21 This makes it very easy to 00:16:20.21\00:16:22.04 access when cooking for our 00:16:22.04\00:16:23.58 children. 00:16:23.58\00:16:24.71 Before ADRA came, I was not 00:16:24.71\00:16:26.51 really growing anything. 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.22 I bought everything from 00:16:28.22\00:16:29.25 the market. 00:16:29.25\00:16:30.52 We did not have a very 00:16:30.52\00:16:31.59 balanced diet. 00:16:31.59\00:16:33.02 But once ADRA taught us the 00:16:33.02\00:16:34.49 basics of having a kitchen 00:16:34.49\00:16:36.02 garden, I became hooked. 00:16:36.02\00:16:38.29 ADRA gave us tools and seeds 00:16:38.29\00:16:40.50 to get started. 00:16:40.50\00:16:42.03 Once I saw those first few 00:16:42.03\00:16:43.90 plants growing, I became 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.63 inspired to grow more and more. 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.07 Now our house is surrounded with 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.77 herbs and vegetables. 00:16:50.77\00:16:53.07 Now I am able to feed my 00:16:53.07\00:16:54.54 children fresh vegetables 00:16:54.54\00:16:56.38 every day, and it doesn't cost 00:16:56.38\00:16:58.21 us anything. 00:16:58.21\00:16:59.38 >> Can you tell us, Kimberly, 00:17:00.82\00:17:01.88 about other... 00:17:01.88\00:17:03.18 ...other knowledge that you 00:17:04.29\00:17:05.55 received from ADRA that has 00:17:05.55\00:17:08.16 really helped you as a mother or 00:17:08.16\00:17:10.26 maybe helped other young people?
