We were in a community hall, and

I was diagnosed.

I had to compartmentalize

things, I had to get through the

evening and sort of I had to not
00:06:16.87\00:06:19.57
think about what had happened

earlier that day.

It was very, very tough, but God

was with me.

I mean, providing a book like

this just said that God is with

And so, yes, it was tough,

but I got through that and

So I had an infusion every

So my clinical trial went for a

full year and unfortunately I

did not have any side effects

of that.

But after my main chemo, the

first four months, I then did

radiation

for 25 sessions.

And through all of this

I was

treated very, very well in the

CancerCare and I,

you know, was

praying every single day to get

through my treatments.
00:07:42.92\00:07:44.23
It was rough and, you know, I
00:07:44.23\00:07:46.49
don't wish anyone to go through
00:07:46.49\00:07:48.76
treatments like that, but God
00:07:48.76\00:07:51.03
got me through.
00:07:51.03\00:07:51.93
My husband, my family were so
00:07:51.93\00:07:54.44
supportive and I got through it.
00:07:54.44\00:07:56.57
>> So, Karen, did you ever have

any fear of recurrence?

[KAREN] You know, I have not

and I still don't have a fear of

And to me, I credit God for that

because He's taken that fear out

because I have treated many

patients that have a high, high

fear of recurrence, and it just

affects their day to day living.

And I have never had that fear

of recurrence and I thank God

for that so much.

So what happened is as I was

going through my treatments,

I saw huge gaps

at CancerCare

for rehabilitation.

There were no physios that

worked at CancerCare.

There were very few services for
00:09:09.38\00:09:12.41
rehabilitation and survivorship
00:09:12.41\00:09:14.85
and so that is when I went
00:09:14.85\00:09:17.85
to grad school and I realized I
00:09:17.85\00:09:20.06
need to have better credentials
00:09:20.06\00:09:22.79
in this area, I need to be more
00:09:22.79\00:09:24.56
knowledgeable in this area and

if I'm going to have some sort

of impact within CancerCare, I

need to, you know, go to school

myself.

So that's when I did my master's

degree and I did my thesis

research in the area of

cancer rehabilitation.

And also along with that, I did

in cancer rehabilitation.

I'm also a certified lymphedema

So I did all these

certifications and lots of

courses and I still do

coursework now, but that, going

to my master's was a very

important step I thought I

needed to have in order to have,

you know, really good

credentials.

my forties.

And so things had changed so, so

much with, you know, the

university systems, the library

system, all of this.

And so it took me three months

to relearn how to learn.

So that was a certain challenge

[KAREN] Well, one of the biggest

challenges that I think is a

universal problem after you've

been diagnosed with cancer is

the financial side of things.
00:11:08.06\00:11:10.43
I was not working for over
00:11:10.43\00:11:13.44
two to three years.
00:11:13.44\00:11:14.60
I did have some disability, but
00:11:14.60\00:11:17.11
that, you know, I had to finish
00:11:17.11\00:11:18.91
that and so I was in my master's
00:11:18.91\00:11:20.91
program as well, so I wasn't
00:11:20.91\00:11:22.31
working.
00:11:22.31\00:11:23.31
And so it's a huge challenge for
00:11:23.31\00:11:25.58
many people that are diagnosed
00:11:25.58\00:11:26.95
with any type of cancer.
00:11:26.95\00:11:28.82
So I had applied for a couple of

scholarships and I got a few,
00:11:31.65\00:11:34.32
you know, smaller amounts of
00:11:34.32\00:11:35.39
scholarships through my masters,
00:11:35.39\00:11:37.43
but there was a fellowship which
00:11:37.43\00:11:39.16
was going to be
00:11:39.16\00:11:41.86
from the Canadian Breast Cancer
00:11:41.86\00:11:43.87
Foundation.
00:11:43.87\00:11:44.77
It was a national fellowship.
00:11:44.77\00:11:46.80
And so I applied, you know,
00:11:46.80\00:11:48.70
hoping that I would get it.
00:11:48.70\00:11:49.67
It was actually gonna be a one
00:11:49.67\00:11:50.67
year salary.
00:11:50.67\00:11:52.21
And I prayed about it.

I knew this would be something
00:11:53.88\00:11:56.91
that would help me through the

rest of my master's program.

And so it was December and

my daughter, Brittany, was at

home from I think it was,

you know, Christmas holidays

or something, she was home
00:12:10.19\00:12:11.69
at the time with me,
00:12:11.69\00:12:13.03
and I got an email...

...and I had received the

scholarship.

And so I jumped up from my

computer chair and I ran over to

where my daughter was and

I said, "Brittany, I got it,

I got it!"

And we were just jumping up and

down, hugging each other.

It was an absolute godsend.

So what that did, it helped me
