Paulie? 00:03:22.33\00:03:23.70 Your sheep are here in my 00:03:23.70\00:03:24.93 corrals." 00:03:24.93\00:03:25.73 "What? 00:03:26.17\00:03:27.14 Oh, good grief. 00:03:27.47\00:03:28.84 Okay. 00:03:28.84\00:03:29.70 I'll be right up." 00:03:29.70\00:03:31.04 Glen and Sheila live a mile up 00:03:32.94\00:03:34.84 the hill from us and are our 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.48 closest neighbours. 00:03:36.48\00:03:38.01 Glen has owned sheep his whole 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.58 life, and had encouraged me to 00:03:40.58\00:03:43.22 start a small flock of my own. 00:03:43.22\00:03:45.22 I relied heavily on him for help 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.19 when needed, 00:03:48.19\00:03:49.09 but this wasn't the 00:03:49.09\00:03:50.73 kind of thing he needed from me, 00:03:50.73\00:03:53.29 wandering sheep. 00:03:53.29\00:03:54.93 I pushed myself out of my chair 00:03:55.76\00:03:58.20 and got in my truck and headed 00:03:58.20\00:03:59.90 up there. 00:03:59.90\00:04:00.80 As I pulled into their yard, 00:04:01.20\00:04:03.14 sure enough, there were my ewes, 00:04:03.14\00:04:06.21 all 16 of them, mingling amongst 00:04:06.21\00:04:09.08 his 50. 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.75 How in the world was I going to 00:04:11.25\00:04:13.38 get them separated out of there? 00:04:13.38\00:04:15.45 Glen just chuckled at me and 00:04:15.95\00:04:17.55 handed me a pail of oats and 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.25 said, "Call them, they'll come." 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.19 So I shook my pail, calling, 00:04:22.72\00:04:25.73 "Here, girly girls." 00:04:25.73\00:04:27.30 That's how I would call them at 00:04:27.30\00:04:28.60 home at feeding time. 00:04:28.60\00:04:30.30 And to my amazement, every one 00:04:30.93\00:04:34.04 of my 16 ewes came running 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.50 to me. 00:04:36.50\00:04:37.47 Gen's sheep slowly lifted their 00:04:37.67\00:04:39.81 heads in curiosity, but didn't 00:04:39.81\00:04:42.51 bother moving. 00:04:42.51\00:04:43.85 Some lazily went back to their 00:04:43.85\00:04:45.55 grazing, giving me no thought 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.32 at all. 00:04:47.32\00:04:48.22 I couldn't believe it. 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.05 As Glen opened the gate to let 00:04:50.85\00:04:53.29 them out, he told me, "Walk 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.22 home, they'll follow." 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.13 And that's exactly what 00:04:57.13\00:04:58.56 they did. 00:04:58.56\00:04:59.59 I walked gently calling to them 00:04:59.59\00:05:01.70 as they followed me down through 00:05:01.70\00:05:03.80 the bush, across a hay field and 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.73 over the road, all the way home 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.97 and into the safety 00:05:07.97\00:05:09.50 of their own pen. 00:05:09.50\00:05:10.97 You know, it's fearful to have 00:05:12.14\00:05:14.14 your sheep out wandering about 00:05:14.14\00:05:15.84 the countryside. 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.18 We have a lot of wolves and 00:05:17.18\00:05:18.85 coyotes that prey on them, 00:05:18.85\00:05:20.72 especially the lambs. 00:05:20.72\00:05:23.35 Jesus says in John 10:27 that... 00:05:24.29\00:05:28.69 The living room of our spiritual 00:05:35.00\00:05:37.00 house is where we sit at Jesus's 00:05:37.00\00:05:39.83 feet and listen to all He tells 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.57 us through His Word. 00:05:42.57\00:05:44.37 We spend time with Him getting 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.57 to know Him. 00:05:46.57\00:05:47.98 Now, picture with me for just a 00:05:48.88\00:05:51.11 moment what it must have been 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.88 like to live in the time of my 00:05:52.88\00:05:55.35 old Victorian farmhouse. 00:05:55.35\00:05:57.35 It is still a fairly new house. 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.96 The great World War has just 00:06:00.96\00:06:02.82 ended. 00:06:02.82\00:06:03.96 It is 1918. 00:06:03.96\00:06:05.99 A brother, cousin, father has 00:06:06.29\00:06:08.93 just arrived home safe from the 00:06:08.93\00:06:10.93 battlefields. 00:06:10.93\00:06:12.27 There is so much rejoicing and 00:06:12.27\00:06:14.47 celebrating together. 00:06:14.47\00:06:16.04 Then, without warning, another 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.87 battle quickly ensues. 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.98 It is the battle of the deadly 00:06:20.98\00:06:22.98 virus, influenza. 00:06:22.98\00:06:25.08 Approximately 50 million people 00:06:25.61\00:06:27.98 of every age and race lost their 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.69 lives as this horrific disease 00:06:30.69\00:06:33.89 spread like wildfire around 00:06:33.89\00:06:35.66 the world. 00:06:35.66\00:06:36.69 One fifth of the world's 00:06:37.29\00:06:38.89 population was gone in the 00:06:38.89\00:06:40.63 immediate wake after a war that 00:06:40.63\00:06:42.96 claimed only 16 million lives in 00:06:42.96\00:06:46.10 comparison. 00:06:46.10\00:06:47.37 In this room, the parlour, that 00:06:47.80\00:06:50.21 once was a place to welcome 00:06:50.21\00:06:51.97 guests in for a visit over tea 00:06:51.97\00:06:54.74 became known as the 00:06:54.74\00:06:56.38 "Death Room." 00:06:56.38\00:06:57.75 Bodies of the dead were laid out 00:06:58.41\00:07:01.35 here as family, friends, and 00:07:01.35\00:07:03.32 neighbours came to mourn. 00:07:03.32\00:07:06.02 Following such a grievous time 00:07:07.09\00:07:09.22 in history, it is suggested in 00:07:09.22\00:07:12.19 such readings as the Ladies Home 00:07:12.19\00:07:14.30 Journal that this room no longer 00:07:14.30\00:07:17.53 be called the "Death Room," 00:07:17.53\00:07:20.14 but rather let's call it the 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.47 "Living Room." 00:07:22.47\00:07:23.84 When we open our heart's door 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.54 and invite Christ in and spend 00:07:26.54\00:07:28.61 time with Him learning, 00:07:28.61\00:07:30.88 listening, and talking together, 00:07:30.88\00:07:33.72 something begins to happen 00:07:33.72\00:07:36.48 deep within. 00:07:36.48\00:07:37.99 The Holy Spirit moves through 00:07:37.99\00:07:40.09 these words, bringing to life 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.59 its definition to our personal 00:07:42.59\00:07:44.53 lives. 00:07:44.53\00:07:45.56 It becomes meaningful and real. 00:07:45.56\00:07:48.50 We gain insight to spiritual 00:07:48.50\00:07:50.53 things and understanding and how 00:07:50.53\00:07:53.03 to apply it to ourselves. 00:07:53.03\00:07:55.30 The Bible that was once just a 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.67 book of stories to us, it now 00:07:57.67\00:08:01.34 becomes the living Word of God 00:08:01.34\00:08:05.38 to our very souls. 00:08:05.38\00:08:06.88 Where once we were dead, we are 00:08:07.22\00:08:09.88 now alive and it is so exciting! 00:08:09.88\00:08:14.56 And this living room is our 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.03 place of prayer as well. 00:08:17.03\00:08:19.13 Prayer is vital to our 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.10 relationship with Jesus because 00:08:21.10\00:08:24.20 the Devil is a sly one, always 00:08:24.20\00:08:27.50 preying on God's children. 00:08:27.50\00:08:29.77 And if he can lure one of His 00:08:29.77\00:08:32.37 small lambs unaware of any 00:08:32.37\00:08:34.61 danger out of the Shepherd's 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.11 fold into what appears to be a 00:08:37.11\00:08:38.95 greener pasture, will find 00:08:38.95\00:08:41.38 themselves in a pen of another 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.12 flock, a flock that is not 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.46 God's flock. 00:08:47.46\00:08:48.86 How many of us have loved ones, 00:08:49.26\00:08:51.69 children who have wandered off, 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.76 left the fold to go out into the 00:08:53.76\00:08:56.60 world's pasture, much like my 00:08:56.60\00:08:59.10 own wandering sheep who got 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.70 themselves into Glen's corrals. 00:09:01.70\00:09:04.27 It's fearful to have our little 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.98 lambs out wandering about the 00:09:07.98\00:09:10.35 countryside. 00:09:10.35\00:09:11.38 Where we live, we have a lot of 00:09:11.75\00:09:14.38 wolves and coyotes and bears 00:09:14.38\00:09:17.42 that prey on them. 00:09:17.42\00:09:18.75 Death is a real threat and we 00:09:19.15\00:09:22.46 know it. 00:09:22.46\00:09:23.59 But we have a Saviour. 00:09:24.26\00:09:26.23 The Good Shepherd is here, ready 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.63 to go in search of those lost 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.13 little lambs. 00:09:31.13\00:09:32.57 Isaiah 43 says... 00:09:34.14\00:09:36.24 Do I know the voice of Jesus? 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.91 This room that once was a room 00:09:45.51\00:09:48.85 of death is now known as the 00:09:48.85\00:09:52.62 living room. 00:09:52.62\00:09:53.66 Because of Christ's death on the 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.66 cross, we get to experience 00:09:55.66\00:09:58.36 life! 00:09:58.36\00:09:59.26 When He says... 00:09:59.79\00:10:01.30 “Friends.” 00:10:15.64\00:10:16.78 I like that. 00:10:16.78\00:10:18.25 Jesus is our best friend and we 00:10:18.25\00:10:21.95 are going to head into the 00:10:21.95\00:10:23.32 kitchen now and enjoy what He 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.39 has prepared for us there. 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.02 [gentle guitar music playing] 00:10:28.69\00:10:31.69 ¤¤ 00:10:31.69\00:10:40.34 The kitchen is the place of 00:10:40.34\00:10:42.67 character development where 00:10:42.67\00:10:44.57 lessons learned is a saving 00:10:44.57\00:10:46.68 grace. 00:10:46.68\00:10:47.64 Let's take the ingredients of a 00:10:47.98\00:10:49.58 cake for illustration. 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.48 Flour. 00:10:52.15\00:10:53.31 Now, flour is dry, and to eat it 00:10:54.12\00:10:56.58 all on its own, we would choke. 00:10:56.58\00:10:59.12 It reminds me that without 00:10:59.62\00:11:01.92 daily, purposeful time with God 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.46 in the living room, my spiritual 00:11:04.46\00:11:06.73 life can be quite dry. 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.23 Baking powder. 00:11:10.33\00:11:11.80 A cake needs baking powder 00:11:12.67\00:11:14.74 to grow. 00:11:14.74\00:11:16.00 As Christians, we need to grow, 00:11:16.00\00:11:18.44 mature by the Holy Spirit's 00:11:18.44\00:11:20.21 leading. 00:11:20.21\00:11:21.11 If we don't allow this vital 00:11:21.11\00:11:22.78 ingredient, we won't become all 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.58 that we can be by God's 00:11:25.58\00:11:26.98 work in us. 00:11:26.98\00:11:28.78 Salt. 00:11:30.19\00:11:31.15 Salt is important to bring the 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.93 flavours alive in most 00:11:36.93\00:11:39.13 everything that we eat. 00:11:39.13\00:11:40.80 Jesus says we are to be the salt 00:11:41.10\00:11:44.50 of the earth. 00:11:44.50\00:11:45.67 That means to bring a good taste 00:11:45.67\00:11:48.24 of spiritual things to others. 00:11:48.24\00:11:50.37 But too much salt and we can 00:11:50.71\00:11:52.67 ruin everything, too. 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.44 When I was nine years old and 00:11:54.88\00:11:56.51 made a batch of cookies for the 00:11:56.51\00:11:57.85 first time, I grabbed the 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.45 canister of salt instead of 00:12:00.45\00:12:02.55 sugar. 00:12:02.55\00:12:03.52 My cookies for un-eatable. 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.09 It takes balance at just the 00:12:06.86\00:12:09.16 right amounts when we are ready. 00:12:09.16\00:12:12.13 Oil. 00:12:12.76\00:12:13.80 Oil is a slippery, slimy 00:12:14.46\00:12:17.30 ingredient, nasty all on 00:12:17.30\00:12:20.04 its own. 00:12:20.04\00:12:21.27 But without it, our cake would 00:12:21.67\00:12:24.07 be as hard as rock. 00:12:24.07\00:12:26.17 Oil represents the Holy Spirit. 00:12:26.54\00:12:29.41 Like an oil in a lamp, our 00:12:29.41\00:12:31.58 hearts need to be softened so 00:12:31.58\00:12:34.32 that it can shine strong and 00:12:34.32\00:12:36.85 bright with kindness and 00:12:36.85\00:12:38.62 compassion for others. 00:12:38.62\00:12:40.89 Milk. 00:12:41.32\00:12:42.49 Milk is wholesome element. 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.83 God's design for us is to be 00:12:46.46\00:12:48.53 healthy and vibrant, wholesome. 00:12:48.53\00:12:53.17 But in a world of sin, we have a 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.27 lot of health issues and we can 00:12:55.27\00:12:57.57 often find ourselves quite ill, 00:12:57.57\00:13:00.88 in need of God's comforting 00:13:00.88\00:13:02.61 guidance. 00:13:02.61\00:13:03.65 Without this grace, we can 00:13:04.01\00:13:06.05 become like sour milk, 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.65 untasteful for others. 00:13:08.65\00:13:11.32 Eggs. 00:13:12.35\00:13:13.52 Eggs are the binding source 00:13:14.12\00:13:16.96 so we don't fall apart. 00:13:16.96\00:13:18.66 But to get to the useful part of 00:13:18.66\00:13:20.60 the egg, we must first 00:13:20.60\00:13:22.90 crack it open. 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.13 [egg shells crackling] 00:13:25.10\00:13:27.50 We can be broken people with a 00:13:31.34\00:13:34.14 lot of hurt, anger, and 00:13:34.14\00:13:36.85 resentment. 00:13:36.85\00:13:38.18 Cracked. 00:13:38.18\00:13:39.75 But unlike Humpty Dumpty, who 00:13:39.75\00:13:41.78 took a great fall and was not 00:13:41.78\00:13:43.62 able to be put back together... 00:13:43.62\00:13:45.72 ...Jesus is our healer, our 00:13:46.35\00:13:49.32 restorer, and takes all of these 00:13:49.32\00:13:51.89 ingredients of our lives and 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.20 begins to do a work within. 00:13:54.20\00:13:57.83 If we invite Him in and ask Him 00:13:58.17\00:14:01.40 to change me and make me a 00:14:01.40\00:14:03.94 reflection of who He is. 00:14:03.94\00:14:06.74 You know, one of the coolest 00:14:08.21\00:14:09.51 things about God's creation of 00:14:09.51\00:14:12.25 His people, His children, is the 00:14:12.25\00:14:14.95 variety of personalities and 00:14:14.95\00:14:17.55 talents that He gives us. 00:14:17.55\00:14:20.19 Like vanilla or lemon, maple, 00:14:20.79\00:14:23.99 almond, or coconut. 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.49 All the flavours... 00:14:32.87\00:14:35.10 ...of all the different people 00:14:37.11\00:14:38.61 in the world. 00:14:38.61\00:14:39.84 And sugar. 00:14:41.81\00:14:43.31 He has blessed us with a lot of 00:14:45.11\00:14:46.95 sweetness, the good things that 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.28 we can be so thankful for. 00:14:49.28\00:14:52.45 What are you thankful for? 00:14:52.82\00:14:54.89 Family, children, a good job, 00:14:54.89\00:14:58.69 protection. 00:14:58.69\00:15:00.20 Or maybe these are the things 00:15:00.20\00:15:01.73 that you're in need of and 00:15:01.73\00:15:04.23 praying for. 00:15:04.23\00:15:06.00 The point is, God is good and 00:15:06.00\00:15:08.14 when we are living in Him and He 00:15:08.14\00:15:10.64 in us, He takes us and creates 00:15:10.64\00:15:13.94 us into this beautiful thing. 00:15:13.94\00:15:18.01 But on our own, we are really 00:15:18.51\00:15:21.75 aren't too much to look at. 00:15:21.75\00:15:23.75 We are just a gooey mess 00:15:24.25\00:15:26.79 going nowhere. 00:15:26.79\00:15:28.22 [gentle music continues] 00:15:28.22\00:15:31.03 ¤¤ 00:15:31.03\00:15:44.81 But you know what? 00:15:44.81\00:15:46.04 He has a plan for us... 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.44 ...and it's a beautiful plan. 00:15:49.11\00:15:51.28 [dishes clanking] 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.38 What a gooey mess! 00:16:00.72\00:16:02.66 Who wants to eat that? 00:16:07.30\00:16:09.13 Character development 00:16:12.57\00:16:14.60 is not easy. 00:16:14.60\00:16:16.07 It can be quite painful at times 00:16:16.74\00:16:19.77 because, let's face it, it's 00:16:19.77\00:16:22.54 hard to change, to put aside our 00:16:22.54\00:16:25.91 self-will for God's will. 00:16:25.91\00:16:28.52 It takes heat. 00:16:28.78\00:16:30.29 It's our nature to be 00:16:31.29\00:16:32.75 self-centred. 00:16:32.75\00:16:34.19 Let's put this in the oven. 00:16:34.96\00:16:36.39 This is a ceramic cookie jar 00:16:43.03\00:16:45.20 that I made years ago in art 00:16:45.20\00:16:46.90 class when I was in the 00:16:46.90\00:16:48.74 11th grade. 00:16:48.74\00:16:49.84 At first it was just a soft 00:16:49.84\00:16:51.67 clay, fresh out of its mould. 00:16:51.67\00:16:54.01 I had to work at it gently, 00:16:54.01\00:16:55.58 scraping the seams down and 00:16:55.58\00:16:57.38 giving it a soft sanding. 00:16:57.38\00:16:59.41 Once this was done, we needed to 00:16:59.41\00:17:01.22 carve our names into the bottom 00:17:01.22\00:17:02.95 before placing it in the special 00:17:02.95\00:17:04.59 oven to harden it so we would 00:17:04.59\00:17:06.76 know which item belonged to 00:17:06.76\00:17:08.69 which student. 00:17:08.69\00:17:09.86 Once this process was done, we 00:17:10.79\00:17:13.29 got to enjoy the fun part, 00:17:13.29\00:17:15.50 painting it. 00:17:15.50\00:17:16.63 The next step was to dab on this 00:17:16.63\00:17:18.97 thick, ugly, grey goop all over 00:17:18.97\00:17:22.20 it, making it quite ugly. 00:17:22.20\00:17:25.14 But without it this cookie jar 00:17:25.34\00:17:27.41 would not be safe to eat out of. 00:17:27.41\00:17:29.78 It was sealing it from the 00:17:29.78\00:17:31.38 toxins of the clay. 00:17:31.38\00:17:33.21 Now, when I had gotten to this 00:17:34.12\00:17:36.62 step with this cookie jar, the 00:17:36.62\00:17:39.12 grey gunk I had put all over it 00:17:39.12\00:17:41.89 was not dry enough for me to 00:17:41.89\00:17:43.26 turn it over to write my name on 00:17:43.26\00:17:45.36 the bottom. 00:17:45.36\00:17:46.39 Yes, I had forgotten to carve it 00:17:46.39\00:17:48.60 in when the clay was still soft. 00:17:48.60\00:17:50.60 And I had to run off to another 00:17:51.70\00:17:53.60 class so I asked my girlfriend 00:17:53.60\00:17:55.60 if she would put my name on the 00:17:55.60\00:17:57.54 bottom before it went 00:17:57.54\00:17:59.01 into the kiln. 00:17:59.01\00:18:00.34 "Oh yeah, no problem," she said. 00:18:01.14\00:18:03.78 She would do that for me. 00:18:03.78\00:18:05.38 That evening, our teacher placed 00:18:06.35\00:18:09.22 our precious projects into the 00:18:09.22\00:18:11.45 kiln and shut the lid. 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.22 The kiln bakes the pottery at a 00:18:13.59\00:18:16.16 very high temperature that takes 00:18:16.16\00:18:18.36 hours to reach its hottest. 00:18:18.36\00:18:20.80 Then when it is done baking, it 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.30 can take a couple of days for it 00:18:23.30\00:18:25.23 to cool down enough to open the 00:18:25.23\00:18:27.47 lid and take the items out. 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.94 It's exciting to see how it 00:18:30.97\00:18:33.11 turned out because that grey 00:18:33.11\00:18:35.21 goop is a glaze. 00:18:35.21\00:18:37.48 So when my cookie jar came out, 00:18:37.48\00:18:40.05 it is a shiny glassy product. 00:18:40.05\00:18:42.78 And as I turned it over... 00:18:43.39\00:18:46.09 ..to see my name on the bottom, 00:18:47.49\00:18:50.83 my girlfriend, my best friend, 00:18:50.83\00:18:53.93 wrote to this... 00:18:53.93\00:18:55.26 "Paulie and Kenny." 00:18:55.76\00:18:58.30 I was so mad at her. 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.44 I just started dating Kenny. 00:19:01.44\00:19:03.24 How did I know if he was going 00:19:03.24\00:19:04.74 to be in my life for very long? 00:19:04.74\00:19:07.64 We often joke that I had to 00:19:08.18\00:19:10.21 marry Kenny because, well, 00:19:10.21\00:19:12.25 his name is forever on my 00:19:12.25\00:19:14.25 cookie jar. 00:19:14.25\00:19:15.52 God writes our names on the 00:19:16.72\00:19:19.29 palms of 00:20:36.63\00:20:38.27 >> I would love to share 00:20:38.43\00:20:39.77 with you. 00:20:39.77\00:20:40.80 My grandmother collected these 00:20:41.44\00:20:43.81 dishes right after World War II, 00:20:43.81\00:20:46.91 when my grandpa and her were 00:20:46.91\00:20:48.91 able to finally set up their 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.78 first home together. 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.65 They did not have very much 00:20:53.38\00:20:54.78 money, so my grandma, she saved 00:20:54.78\00:20:58.55 every little penny that she 00:20:58.55\00:21:00.12 could find, she was a hard 00:21:00.12\00:21:01.82 worker, and... 00:21:01.82\00:21:04.03 ...every month 00:21:04.76\00:21:07.36 she would walk down to the 00:21:07.36\00:21:09.33 Franciscan dinnerware factory 00:21:09.33\00:21:12.67 and she would look through the 00:21:12.67\00:21:14.10 shelves and she would pick out a 00:21:14.10\00:21:16.27 piece or two. 00:21:16.27\00:21:17.84 And over the years, in the 00:21:17.84\00:21:19.34 1950s, she collected a huge set 00:21:19.34\00:21:23.85 of these Desert Rose dishes. 00:21:23.85\00:21:25.55 Now to back up just a little 00:21:26.31\00:21:27.85 bit, she grew up working in her 00:21:27.85\00:21:30.85 Aunt Glenys' hotel, 00:21:30.85\00:21:33.59 setting banquet tables. 00:21:33.59\00:21:36.73 So she knew the etiquette of 00:21:36.73\00:21:39.16 setting the proper table. 00:21:39.16\00:21:41.40 So when she was married, it was 00:21:42.86\00:21:45.10 very important to her to have a 00:21:45.10\00:21:47.34 beautiful Sabbath-set table. 00:21:47.34\00:21:50.04 So this is why it was so 00:21:50.81\00:21:52.64 important for her to be 00:21:52.64\00:21:54.01 collecting these dishes. 00:21:54.01\00:21:55.74 When my mother was growing up 00:21:57.68\00:22:00.35 and setting the table, my 00:22:00.35\00:22:01.92 grandma was-- made sure that she 00:22:01.92\00:22:04.15 knew how to set the table 00:22:04.15\00:22:06.39 proper. 00:22:06.39\00:22:07.42 When my mother got married, she 00:22:07.92\00:22:10.79 inherited all of these dishes, 00:22:10.79\00:22:12.56 they were her wedding present. 00:22:12.56\00:22:14.56 And that's one reason why my 00:22:14.56\00:22:16.06 grandma kept collecting them was 00:22:16.06\00:22:17.70 that someday she would give them 00:22:17.70\00:22:19.77 to her daughter. 00:22:19.77\00:22:20.87 So I grew up setting our Sabbath 00:22:22.50\00:22:25.51 table with the same dishes. 00:22:25.51\00:22:28.51 >> And so, Paulie, how did this 00:22:29.21\00:22:31.38 beautiful set end up in your 00:22:31.38\00:22:33.21 home? 00:22:33.21\00:22:34.08 >> Well, about ten years ago, my 00:22:34.65\00:22:36.48 parents downsized, so I drove 00:22:36.48\00:22:39.55 all the way out to Washington 00:22:39.55\00:22:42.62 and packed up a few of the 00:22:42.62\00:22:45.23 family heirlooms to bring home 00:22:45.23\00:22:47.66 to my home and, of course, the 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.07 dishes were one of them. 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.57 And as my mother and I were 00:22:51.57\00:22:53.10 unpacking her hutch and 00:22:53.10\00:22:54.80 carefully, you know, putting the 00:22:54.80\00:22:56.37 tissue paper all around them, 00:22:56.37\00:22:58.47 she told me the story of how my 00:22:58.47\00:23:00.18 grandma had collected them. 00:23:00.18\00:23:02.08 And part of the story-- I had 00:23:02.68\00:23:04.05 heard the story before, but as 00:23:04.05\00:23:05.71 she was telling me, there was a 00:23:05.71\00:23:07.15 very special element to the 00:23:07.15\00:23:08.98 story that I had never heard 00:23:08.98\00:23:10.35 before. 00:23:10.35\00:23:11.39 My grandma, because she did not 00:23:12.82\00:23:15.19 have very much money and she 00:23:15.19\00:23:17.33 would be saving it and 00:23:17.33\00:23:18.29 everything and she'd walk down 00:23:18.29\00:23:19.53 to that Franciscan factory and 00:23:19.53\00:23:23.40 carefully look over the dishes, 00:23:23.40\00:23:26.53 what she was buying were the 00:23:26.53\00:23:28.40 flawed pieces, the seconds. 00:23:28.40\00:23:31.31 So if you were to look very 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.21 closely to these dishes, you 00:23:34.21\00:23:37.15 will find a flaw somewhere. 00:23:37.15\00:23:40.12 Now, most people would not 00:23:41.42\00:23:44.45 buy flawed pieces. 00:23:44.45\00:23:46.15 It-- they wouldn't mean a thing 00:23:46.15\00:23:47.72 to them. 00:23:47.72\00:23:48.76 But because it was so important 00:23:48.76\00:23:50.53 that my grandma have a special 00:23:50.53\00:23:52.39 table and she did what she 00:23:52.39\00:23:54.73 could, they were very valuable 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.43 to her. 00:23:57.43\00:23:58.27 >> So these have flaws. 00:23:58.57\00:24:01.04 The kitchen is the place, I know 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.94 in your book you say that the 00:24:02.94\00:24:04.54 kitchen is a place of character 00:24:04.54\00:24:05.77 development. 00:24:05.77\00:24:06.78 [PAULIE] Yes. 00:24:06.78\00:24:07.71 >> And so we see our flaws. 00:24:07.71\00:24:09.94 We kind of want to hide them. 00:24:09.94\00:24:11.55 But these are important to you, 00:24:11.95\00:24:13.62 even though they're 70 years old 00:24:13.62\00:24:15.18 and they've got flaws and you 00:24:15.18\00:24:16.22 know about the flaws now. 00:24:16.22\00:24:17.49 [PAULIE] Yes. 00:24:17.49\00:24:18.12 >> Why are they so valuable 00:24:18.12\00:24:18.95 to you? 00:24:18.95\00:24:19.75 >> Because they were so valuable 00:24:20.42\00:24:22.72 to my grandmother and she worked 00:24:22.72\00:24:24.76 so hard to collect them and keep 00:24:24.76\00:24:26.83 them in the family. 00:24:26.83\00:24:28.46 And so, you know, when we 00:24:28.46\00:24:29.93 remodelled this kitchen, I made 00:24:29.93\00:24:32.57 sure that the cupboards that I 00:24:32.57\00:24:34.80 chose had glass doors on the 00:24:34.80\00:24:36.97 fronts so that I could 00:24:36.97\00:24:38.51 display them. 00:24:38.51\00:24:39.51 I have a special place for them 00:24:39.51\00:24:41.94 because, you know, they're kind 00:24:41.94\00:24:43.04 of fragile, I don't use them as 00:24:43.04\00:24:44.85 every day or every weekend like 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.55 my grandmother did and 00:24:47.55\00:24:48.48 my mother did. 00:24:48.48\00:24:49.62 But I love them. 00:24:49.95\00:24:51.52 >> Mmm, I love that. 00:24:51.52\00:24:52.92 There's so many, I guess, 00:24:52.92\00:24:54.96 spiritual connections that 00:24:54.96\00:24:56.46 you're drawing out and you draw 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.13 out throughout the book. 00:24:58.13\00:24:59.73 They're fragile, so they're kind 00:25:00.10\00:25:01.63 of like us, right? 00:25:01.63\00:25:02.93 [PAULIE] Yes. 00:25:02.93\00:25:03.83 [MIKE] You gotta be careful. 00:25:03.83\00:25:04.77 [PAULIE] And imperfect. 00:25:04.77\00:25:05.47 [MIKE] And imperfect, you know, 00:25:05.47\00:25:06.80 and-- 00:25:06.80\00:25:07.54 but you treat them with care 00:25:07.54\00:25:09.14 because of who they belong to. 00:25:09.14\00:25:10.54 Do you think you'd ever 00:25:10.54\00:25:11.41 sell them? 00:25:11.41\00:25:12.21 >> Absolutely not. 00:25:12.44\00:25:13.91 >> Why not? 00:25:14.38\00:25:15.54 >> Because they're priceless. 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.91 [MIKE] They're valuable to you. 00:25:18.61\00:25:19.98 >> They're valuable to me. 00:25:19.98\00:25:21.32 Yep. 00:25:21.32\00:25:22.05 Just like my grandma's china, 00:25:22.65\00:25:25.15 God sees, our beauty... 00:25:25.15\00:25:26.59 ...and we're worth something. 00:25:27.16\00:25:28.89 [gentle piano music playing] 00:25:28.89\00:25:31.33 ¤¤ 00:25:31.33\00:25:47.74 >> Paulie, we've come to the end 00:25:47.74\00:25:49.34 of our time together, but we are 00:25:49.34\00:25:51.91 really looking forward to coming 00:25:51.91\00:25:53.88 here next week again so we can 00:25:53.88\00:25:56.02 go through some other rooms in 00:25:56.02\00:25:58.02 your beautiful Victorian house. 00:25:58.02\00:25:59.95 >> Oh, I can't wait. 00:25:59.95\00:26:01.19 >> But before we let you go, I 00:26:01.19\00:26:03.19 wonder if you could pray for our 00:26:03.19\00:26:04.63 viewers. 00:26:04.63\00:26:05.56 >> Yes, I would love to. 00:26:05.56\00:26:07.23 Dear Heavenly Father, what a 00:26:08.33\00:26:11.00 privilege it is to share my 00:26:11.00\00:26:14.17 house and the lessons that You 00:26:14.17\00:26:16.81 have given to me through these 00:26:16.81\00:26:20.28 renovation experiences and 00:26:20.28\00:26:22.88 experiences through our lives. 00:26:22.88\00:26:25.11 And Father, today we talked 00:26:25.11\00:26:27.52 about my sheep who got lost... 00:26:27.52\00:26:30.05 ...and how the ones who knew my 00:26:31.05\00:26:34.22 voice came home, they followed 00:26:34.22\00:26:36.69 me home. 00:26:36.69\00:26:37.73 Lord, I know that there are 00:26:38.03\00:26:40.26 people who are searching for 00:26:40.26\00:26:42.26 You, who need You, who are 00:26:42.26\00:26:46.40 looking for a better way. 00:26:46.40\00:26:48.67 Give them the courage and the 00:26:50.17\00:26:52.41 strength to open their doors and 00:26:52.41\00:26:56.24 invite You in. 00:26:56.24\00:26:57.71 Where You can give them comfort 00:26:59.25\00:27:01.75 and healing and peace. 00:27:01.75\00:27:03.75 In Jesus' name, I pray, amen. 00:27:03.75\00:27:06.32 >> Friends, Jesus is Your 00:27:09.52\00:27:11.36 Saviour and He longs to have a 00:27:11.36\00:27:13.36 special relationship with you. 00:27:13.36\00:27:16.06 He wants you to spend time with 00:27:16.06\00:27:17.70 Him by experiencing His Word and 00:27:17.70\00:27:20.27 connecting to Him daily so that 00:27:20.27\00:27:23.34 you can really get to know Him. 00:27:23.34\00:27:25.21 [RENÉ] Today our free offer for 00:27:25.47\00:27:27.24 you is Steps to Christ. 00:27:27.24\00:27:29.51 This powerful book will 00:27:29.51\00:27:31.01 highlight what God's Word says 00:27:31.01\00:27:33.05 about the plan of salvation and 00:27:33.05\00:27:35.28 the biblical steps to a saving 00:27:35.28\00:27:37.39 relationship with Jesus. 00:27:37.39\00:27:39.55 >> And when you get your free 00:27:39.95\00:27:41.69 offer, we will also send 00:27:41.69\00:27:43.76 enclosed this special bookmark 00:27:43.76\00:27:46.36 which is designed to go with 00:27:46.36\00:27:48.56 Paulie's book. 00:27:48.56\00:27:49.56 And on it is the text, 00:27:49.56\00:27:51.03 Proverbs 24, verse 3 and 4. 00:27:51.03\00:27:53.77 >> Before you go, we would also 00:28:06.25\00:28:07.95 like to invite you to follow us 00:28:07.95\00:28:09.85 on Instagram and Facebook and 00:28:09.85\00:28:12.05 subscribe to our YouTube channel 00:28:12.05\00:28:14.59 and also listen to our Podcasts. 00:28:14.59\00:28:17.39 And if you go to our website, 00:28:17.39\00:28:19.53 you can see our latest programs. 00:28:19.53\00:28:21.86 >> You, too, can experience the 00:28:22.43\00:28:24.07 fullness of life that is found 00:28:24.07\00:28:25.97 in the words of Jesus 00:28:25.97\00:28:27.57 when He said... 00:28:27.57\00:28:28.60 [inspirational music playing] 00:28:36.88\00:28:40.58 ¤¤ 00:28:40.58\00:28:53.43 ¤¤ 00:28:53.43\00:28:57.50
