joining us. 00:00:44.91\00:00:46.57 Like Jonah in the Bible, our 00:00:46.57\00:00:47.91 special guest, Troy Guderyan, 00:00:47.91\00:00:50.01 found himself running from God. 00:00:50.01\00:00:52.25 >> However, he found out that he 00:00:52.51\00:00:54.75 was not able to outrun God's 00:00:54.75\00:00:57.55 love for him. 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.25 Pastor Troy, welcome to It Is 00:00:59.65\00:01:01.96 Written Canada. 00:01:01.96\00:01:03.32 >> Thank you for having me. 00:01:03.32\00:01:04.73 [MIKE] Troy, tell us a little 00:01:05.16\00:01:06.86 bit about yourself, where you're 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.66 from, your family, their 00:01:08.66\00:01:10.73 influence in your life. 00:01:10.73\00:01:12.00 >> So I grew up in a small town, 00:01:12.93\00:01:15.57 Hudson Bay, which is about four 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.67 and a half hours, 00:01:17.67\00:01:19.84 a little, I guess, over four 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.11 hours northeast of Regina. 00:01:21.11\00:01:23.81 And... 00:01:23.81\00:01:24.81 ...from Hudson Bay, the farm 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.05 that we grew up on was just 00:01:28.05\00:01:29.92 south of Hudson Bay, ten miles 00:01:29.92\00:01:31.79 or so. 00:01:31.79\00:01:32.62 So it was just a ten minute 00:01:32.62\00:01:33.56 drive into town. 00:01:33.56\00:01:34.69 But... 00:01:34.69\00:01:36.09 ...yeah, it was-- I grew up as a 00:01:36.99\00:01:39.49 farm kid and loved the outdoors, 00:01:39.49\00:01:42.06 fishing, hunting. 00:01:42.06\00:01:43.43 In fact, like, after school, I 00:01:44.27\00:01:46.03 would jump on the quad and I 00:01:46.03\00:01:48.57 would drive over to a buddy's 00:01:48.57\00:01:50.07 house, and we would be in the 00:01:50.07\00:01:51.61 bush till like 10:00 at night. 00:01:51.61\00:01:53.24 And we ended up spending a night 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.08 in the bush one time. 00:01:55.08\00:01:56.48 It was just fun things, I guess, 00:01:56.48\00:01:58.78 for-- just things that I enjoyed 00:01:58.78\00:02:01.38 growing up. 00:02:01.38\00:02:02.62 You know, as my family was, you 00:02:03.62\00:02:08.36 know, they were religious and 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.49 Seventh-day Adventist, I grew up 00:02:10.49\00:02:11.66 in an Adventist home. 00:02:11.66\00:02:13.09 And so, you know, we always went 00:02:13.09\00:02:15.63 to church on Sabbath. 00:02:15.63\00:02:16.70 There wasn't a question of, you 00:02:16.70\00:02:18.20 know, what were we gonna do on 00:02:18.20\00:02:19.63 Saturday, you know, we knew that 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.84 we were going to church. 00:02:21.84\00:02:22.97 That's just what we did. 00:02:22.97\00:02:24.27 So obviously, coming from a 00:02:24.81\00:02:27.01 small town and having just 00:02:27.01\00:02:29.64 relatives in the church, you 00:02:29.64\00:02:31.55 know, and to come to the age of 00:02:31.55\00:02:33.35 finding, you know, a life 00:02:33.35\00:02:34.85 partner, you know, where do you 00:02:34.85\00:02:37.45 go when there's a church full of 00:02:37.45\00:02:39.35 cousins, right? 00:02:39.35\00:02:40.89 So you're not going to marry 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.12 your cousin. 00:02:42.12\00:02:43.36 Obviously, I knew that. 00:02:43.36\00:02:44.73 So fortunately, there was a girl 00:02:45.09\00:02:46.90 that had moved away 00:02:46.90\00:02:48.40 some years prior. 00:02:48.40\00:02:50.20 She had moved back to Hudson Bay 00:02:50.20\00:02:53.40 and come to high school. 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.04 And I was in my 12th grade and 00:02:56.04\00:02:58.34 she was in grade 11 and... 00:02:58.34\00:03:00.44 And so this girl was actually a 00:03:00.91\00:03:03.21 friend of my, one of my best 00:03:03.21\00:03:05.61 friends, right? 00:03:05.61\00:03:06.82 And so when she'd come to town, 00:03:06.82\00:03:09.95 he phoned her up and said, "Hey, 00:03:09.95\00:03:11.42 you know, do you wanna get 00:03:11.42\00:03:12.69 together, do something?" 00:03:12.69\00:03:13.56 And I happened to be actually 00:03:13.56\00:03:15.29 with my buddy at the time. 00:03:15.29\00:03:16.52 And anyways, we spent the 00:03:16.52\00:03:18.53 afternoon together and, you 00:03:18.53\00:03:21.70 know, we ended up hitting it off 00:03:21.70\00:03:23.26 and today she's my wife. 00:03:23.26\00:03:24.87 And so, yeah. 00:03:24.87\00:03:25.80 So it turned out well. 00:03:25.80\00:03:27.67 [RENÉ] So you were high school 00:03:28.34\00:03:29.64 sweethearts? 00:03:29.64\00:03:30.47 >> Yes, we are high school 00:03:30.47\00:03:31.91 sweethearts. 00:03:31.91\00:03:32.94 >> So, Troy, you mentioned that 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.18 you grew up in the church. 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.41 Did it become your faith and did 00:03:37.88\00:03:41.68 you understand why you were 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.12 going to church? 00:03:44.12\00:03:45.42 [TROY] You know, I just knew, 00:03:46.49\00:03:49.72 like I said, every Saturday, 00:03:49.72\00:03:51.23 you know, we'd just, we'd go to 00:03:51.23\00:03:52.53 church. 00:03:52.53\00:03:53.29 And obviously growing up and, 00:03:53.29\00:03:55.10 you know, as a kid, you learn 00:03:55.10\00:03:56.43 the Bible stories. 00:03:56.43\00:03:58.03 And so, I mean, 00:03:58.03\00:04:00.64 you know the Bible, you know 00:04:00.64\00:04:02.27 what it teaches, you know the 00:04:02.27\00:04:03.41 principles of it, but, you know, 00:04:03.41\00:04:07.11 you don't really embrace it as 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.21 your own and... 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.48 And it wasn't until we had an 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.15 evangelist come to Hudson Bay, 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.58 Victor Gill I believe it was, 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.35 and he did a Revelation seminar. 00:04:17.35\00:04:20.69 So that's where I learned about 00:04:21.29\00:04:23.56 the Lamb of God and, you know, 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.56 His substitutionary sacrifice 00:04:25.56\00:04:27.50 for us. 00:04:27.50\00:04:28.66 And actually, that was when I 00:04:29.10\00:04:31.07 decided to give my life to the 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.30 Lord through baptism and I was, 00:04:32.30\00:04:34.77 I believe I was 17 or 18, I 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.64 would have to do the math, 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.41 but yeah. 00:04:38.41\00:04:40.94 That's when it became real to me 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.24 and I really understood what God 00:04:42.24\00:04:44.75 actually did for me by, you 00:04:44.75\00:04:46.45 know, His sacrifice on the 00:04:46.45\00:04:47.78 cross. 00:04:47.78\00:04:48.82 And it was at that moment that 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.85 I decided to give my life 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.55 to the Lord. 00:04:52.55\00:04:53.59 >> So, Troy, once you were 00:04:54.69\00:04:55.89 baptized, did you feel like God 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.79 had a plan for your life? 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.29 >> You know, I knew God had a 00:04:59.93\00:05:02.33 plan for my life because God has 00:05:02.33\00:05:03.93 a plan for everyone's life, but 00:05:03.93\00:05:06.27 I didn't know what that was. 00:05:06.27\00:05:07.84 And my buddy was actually 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.84 enrolling in Millwright 00:05:09.84\00:05:12.64 Industrial Mechanics. 00:05:12.64\00:05:14.34 And so I thought, "Hey, why not? 00:05:14.34\00:05:16.38 I'll try that out too." 00:05:16.38\00:05:17.68 Because I liked working with my 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.38 hands and doing things, so... 00:05:19.38\00:05:21.32 So I enrolled in Millwright 00:05:21.65\00:05:23.69 School and I enjoyed it. 00:05:23.69\00:05:26.49 We did welding and machining. 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.69 So we started the machine shop 00:05:29.62\00:05:31.29 and being 21 years old, you 00:05:31.29\00:05:34.76 know, we didn't have any money. 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.40 And so my dad ended up cosigning 00:05:36.40\00:05:40.77 for the loans and, you know, he 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.34 put up some land for collateral 00:05:42.34\00:05:43.74 and obviously he believed in 00:05:43.74\00:05:45.41 what we were doing. 00:05:45.41\00:05:46.84 I hired my cousin to work 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.31 for me. 00:05:48.31\00:05:48.98 He was he was a second year 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.18 machinist so he had a little bit 00:05:50.18\00:05:51.25 more experience machining than I 00:05:51.25\00:05:53.35 did just being at Millwright. 00:05:53.35\00:05:54.95 And so we were working on our 00:05:54.95\00:05:59.45 first few jobs, we were excited, 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.96 you know, to get going. 00:06:01.96\00:06:02.89 Things were not going, you know, 00:06:02.89\00:06:04.76 obviously well, as you start a 00:06:04.76\00:06:05.96 business, it takes time to get 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.30 your feet on the ground. 00:06:07.30\00:06:08.63 >> So just before you and 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.77 Lynnette got married, you had 00:06:11.77\00:06:13.70 this machine shop in Hudson Bay 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.04 that you were running and your 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.21 cousin was helping you. 00:06:17.21\00:06:18.87 But then something unexpected 00:06:18.87\00:06:21.11 happened. 00:06:21.11\00:06:22.14 Can you tell us about that? 00:06:22.14\00:06:23.88 >> We started working on these 00:06:24.88\00:06:27.02 hydraulic cylinders, was a piece 00:06:27.02\00:06:29.65 of equipment from my cousin's 00:06:29.65\00:06:31.85 skidder, and... 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.32 ...taking apart these hydraulic 00:06:34.12\00:06:35.72 cylinders, you know, sometimes 00:06:35.72\00:06:37.93 they can come apart easy and 00:06:37.93\00:06:39.66 sometimes they can, you know, 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.66 be a little bit more difficult. 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.16 I took apart the first hydraulic 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.10 cylinder by using 00:06:46.10\00:06:47.64 compressed air. 00:06:47.64\00:06:48.54 And I give it the shot of air, I 00:06:48.54\00:06:51.91 had all the retaining rings off 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.34 and the cylinder just, it come 00:06:53.34\00:06:54.84 out in my hand, nice and slick. 00:06:54.84\00:06:57.01 And I thought, this was 00:06:57.01\00:06:58.15 quite easy. 00:06:58.15\00:06:59.18 So I tried the second cylinder 00:06:59.18\00:07:01.12 and the second cylinder, it's 00:07:01.12\00:07:04.09 identical cylinders, and when I 00:07:04.09\00:07:06.45 went to to take it apart, the 00:07:06.45\00:07:08.06 shaft extended and it come to 00:07:08.06\00:07:10.03 the end where the gland is in 00:07:10.03\00:07:11.46 the cylinder. 00:07:11.46\00:07:12.63 But when I give it a shot of 00:07:12.63\00:07:13.96 air, it wasn't coming. 00:07:13.96\00:07:15.23 And so I thought, "Okay, a 00:07:15.23\00:07:16.33 little bit more air, needs a 00:07:16.33\00:07:17.27 little bit more air," and so you 00:07:17.27\00:07:18.30 continue to give it air. 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.67 And pretty soon, you know, this 00:07:20.67\00:07:23.51 cylinder has got 95 pounds of 00:07:23.51\00:07:26.04 air in it and it was like a 00:07:26.04\00:07:27.38 six-inch cylinder. 00:07:27.38\00:07:28.81 And so if you multiply that out, 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.75 it's like 2,600 pounds per 00:07:30.75\00:07:32.71 square inch of force that comes 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.65 out of that cylinder. 00:07:35.65\00:07:36.99 Well, that cylinder finally gave 00:07:38.05\00:07:42.26 way and when it did it, it hit 00:07:42.26\00:07:44.39 me in the stomach. 00:07:44.39\00:07:46.43 And so, you know, it pushed 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.43 everything up into my chest 00:07:49.43\00:07:50.83 cavity, you know, I fell to one 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.20 knee, I got up, and my cousin 00:07:53.20\00:07:56.14 looked at me and he said, "Do we 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.17 have to go to the hospital?" 00:07:58.17\00:07:59.17 And I said, "No, just let me 00:07:59.17\00:08:00.18 catch my breath." 00:08:00.18\00:08:01.04 And as I was catching my breath, 00:08:01.04\00:08:03.51 I realized that, you know what, 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.15 there's something seriously 00:08:05.15\00:08:06.75 wrong. 00:08:06.75\00:08:07.58 >> There was a lot of pressure 00:08:07.58\00:08:08.42 there. 00:08:08.42\00:08:09.08 It was like a cannonball hitting 00:08:09.08\00:08:10.62 you in the stomach. 00:08:10.62\00:08:11.62 [TROY] Yeah, like... 00:08:11.62\00:08:12.69 >> Throwing everything up. 00:08:12.69\00:08:13.96 But you, I mean, you're feeling 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.92 this and a second before you're, 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.23 everything's fine. 00:08:18.23\00:08:19.53 And so after it hits you, it 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.03 hits you so quickly you don't 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.30 even... 00:08:22.30\00:08:22.96 Hey, no passage of time. 00:08:22.96\00:08:24.37 You're fine. 00:08:24.37\00:08:25.70 But it wasn't just shortness 00:08:25.70\00:08:27.37 of breath. 00:08:27.37\00:08:28.30 [TROY] No, it wasn't. 00:08:28.30\00:08:29.50 In fact, there was quite a bit 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.04 of internal damage done and we 00:08:31.04\00:08:33.04 didn't realize that until I got 00:08:33.04\00:08:35.08 to the hospital and they, you 00:08:35.08\00:08:37.05 know, they cut my coveralls off 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.78 and they prepped me to fly out 00:08:39.78\00:08:41.75 to Saskatoon. 00:08:41.75\00:08:43.02 And when I flew out to 00:08:43.35\00:08:44.42 Saskatoon, when I arrived to 00:08:44.42\00:08:46.29 Saskatoon, my mom and my aunt 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.22 were waiting at the hospital 00:08:48.22\00:08:49.52 for me. 00:08:49.52\00:08:50.63 And, you know, as I was flying, 00:08:50.63\00:08:54.10 I could-- I noticed my stomach, 00:08:54.10\00:08:55.63 you know, it just kept getting 00:08:55.63\00:08:56.77 larger and larger and so I knew 00:08:56.77\00:08:59.07 something was really wrong. 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.34 And, you know, when you're 00:09:00.34\00:09:01.47 laying there in that state, 00:09:01.47\00:09:02.84 you're wondering, you know, 00:09:02.84\00:09:04.74 obviously you're praying, you 00:09:04.74\00:09:05.84 know, you know, you don't know 00:09:05.84\00:09:06.81 what's going on and, you know, 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.84 the thought crossed my mind, you 00:09:08.84\00:09:10.65 know, "What am I doing?" right? 00:09:10.65\00:09:13.62 "Is this really God's plan for 00:09:13.62\00:09:15.18 my life?" you know, start a 00:09:15.18\00:09:16.79 machine shop. 00:09:16.79\00:09:17.85 And you know, I questioned 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.69 myself, you know, "Am I running 00:09:20.69\00:09:22.56 from God?" 00:09:22.56\00:09:23.53 But the funny thing is we, 00:09:23.93\00:09:25.76 sometimes we just continue doing 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.86 what we're doing because 00:09:27.86\00:09:30.00 it's easy, right? 00:09:30.00\00:09:31.23 And so we ended up getting to 00:09:31.23\00:09:34.34 the hospital. 00:09:34.34\00:09:36.50 My mom and aunt were waiting 00:09:36.50\00:09:37.67 there and they rushed me in and 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.87 prepped me for surgery. 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.54 And I remember the last thing 00:09:41.54\00:09:43.04 that the doctor told me, he said 00:09:43.04\00:09:45.05 that, "You might come out with a 00:09:45.05\00:09:48.18 bag, colostomy." 00:09:48.18\00:09:49.68 So I wasn't in the situation 00:09:50.35\00:09:55.06 to argue with him. 00:09:55.06\00:09:56.39 So I come out of surgery. 00:09:56.39\00:09:59.09 When I come out of surgery, 00:09:59.09\00:10:01.53 praise God, I didn't have a bag 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.77 and everything was well, I, you 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.80 know, my stomach was stapled, I 00:10:06.80\00:10:08.97 can't remember 40 some staples 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.64 and they just cut me, 00:10:10.64\00:10:13.17 went around my bellybutton and, 00:10:13.17\00:10:14.48 you know, cut me wide open. 00:10:14.48\00:10:15.98 They pulled everything out, 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.48 cleaned it up, put it back in. 00:10:17.48\00:10:18.58 Everything-- they couldn't have 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.25 done a better job, but as I was 00:10:20.25\00:10:25.52 laying in bed, I was quite-- I 00:10:25.52\00:10:28.02 never had an accident like this 00:10:28.02\00:10:29.29 before, so I didn't know what to 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.63 expect for, you know, the amount 00:10:31.63\00:10:32.99 of pain that one would be in 00:10:32.99\00:10:34.46 in a situation like this. 00:10:34.46\00:10:36.80 And so I was in quite a bit of 00:10:36.80\00:10:38.33 pain and they had given a button 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.57 to push as soon as you needed 00:10:41.57\00:10:43.14 the pain medication and so I was 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.04 pushing it and nothing was 00:10:45.04\00:10:47.21 really helping. 00:10:47.21\00:10:48.38 The only thing that was kind of 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.35 odd was I was starting to get 00:10:50.35\00:10:52.41 itchy and... 00:10:52.41\00:10:53.98 ...my back especially. 00:10:55.75\00:10:57.65 And so I would ask Lynette, 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.02 "Lynette, can you scratch 00:10:59.02\00:11:00.12 my back?" 00:11:00.12\00:11:00.86 And so she was scratching my 00:11:00.86\00:11:02.96 back so hard that it was just 00:11:02.96\00:11:04.89 leaving welts on my back and... 00:11:04.89\00:11:06.80 But it felt so good, like when 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.66 she scratched, but it was just 00:11:08.66\00:11:10.10 welting my back. 00:11:10.10\00:11:11.10 And so she was questioning the 00:11:11.10\00:11:15.24 doctors, the nurses, like, "Do 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.04 you think that he could be 00:11:17.04\00:11:18.61 allergic to the medication?" 00:11:18.61\00:11:20.34 Like, I was allergic to 00:11:20.34\00:11:21.58 penicillin when I was young, 00:11:21.58\00:11:23.45 right, and so she was asking 00:11:23.45\00:11:25.28 about the morphine medication. 00:11:25.28\00:11:28.18 And they didn't think that it 00:11:28.52\00:11:30.39 was an issue. 00:11:30.39\00:11:31.59 And so she was getting hungry 00:11:31.59\00:11:34.56 and so she jumped in the 00:11:34.56\00:11:36.49 elevator and she went down to 00:11:36.49\00:11:38.03 the cafeteria to get a 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.93 bite to eat. 00:11:39.93\00:11:40.96 And as she was in the elevator, 00:11:40.96\00:11:46.80 she heard over the intercom... 00:11:46.80\00:11:49.27 [] “Code blue, room 305. 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.34 All doctors to the E.R.” 00:11:51.34\00:11:52.77 [TROY] And she said she knew 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.41 right away that it had to have 00:11:54.41\00:11:56.51 been me. 00:11:56.51\00:11:57.25 And so she come right back up to 00:11:57.25\00:11:59.88 the room. 00:11:59.88\00:12:00.98 And they were trying to get her 00:12:00.98\00:12:01.98 into a quiet room, and she 00:12:01.98\00:12:04.32 wasn't having that. 00:12:04.32\00:12:05.39 She said, "No, I know what 00:12:05.39\00:12:06.52 happens in the quiet room." 00:12:06.52\00:12:07.46 And so she talked her way into 00:12:07.46\00:12:10.13 the room. 00:12:10.13\00:12:11.03 And so she was able to get into 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.89 the room and she-- I don't-- I 00:12:12.89\00:12:14.83 didn't know this, she was 00:12:14.83\00:12:16.23 rubbing my foot and she's, you 00:12:16.23\00:12:18.47 know, calling my name and I'm, 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.04 she said I'm-- I was staring 00:12:21.04\00:12:22.14 right through her. 00:12:22.14\00:12:23.30 It turns out that I was allergic 00:12:24.84\00:12:26.91 to the morphine and my body 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.98 started shutting down. 00:12:28.98\00:12:30.51 And so once Lynette got back 00:12:30.51\00:12:33.72 into the room and they gave me a 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.09 shot of adrenaline and I 00:12:37.09\00:12:39.32 remember like it was yesterday, 00:12:39.32\00:12:41.99 I sat up in bed and I thought I 00:12:41.99\00:12:45.26 was dreaming. 00:12:45.26\00:12:46.76 You know, there was a light, you 00:12:46.76\00:12:47.73 know, they had the light in my 00:12:47.73\00:12:48.93 face and I sat up and I looked 00:12:48.93\00:12:51.20 out and I saw Lynette surrounded 00:12:51.20\00:12:54.04 by, you know, a few nurses and 00:12:54.04\00:12:55.70 I, and I'm like, "Oh," I said to 00:12:55.70\00:12:57.14 myself, "Oh, I must be 00:12:57.14\00:12:57.97 dreaming." 00:12:57.97\00:12:58.74 And I just laid right back. 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.31 I went back to sleep. 00:13:03.88\00:13:05.61 There was no audio sound, I, 00:13:05.61\00:13:07.22 like I say, I could just see her 00:13:07.22\00:13:08.58 there and I was happy and I laid 00:13:08.58\00:13:11.02 back down. 00:13:11.02\00:13:12.45 The second shot of adrenaline 00:13:12.45\00:13:14.32 that they gave me, 00:13:14.32\00:13:15.96 my audio came back. 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.49 And so when I opened my eyes, 00:13:17.49\00:13:20.13 you know, they had the light in 00:13:20.13\00:13:21.30 my face and I started hearing 00:13:21.30\00:13:23.16 what they were saying and they 00:13:23.16\00:13:24.30 were they were saying, you know, 00:13:24.30\00:13:25.90 I stopped breathing and, you 00:13:25.90\00:13:27.27 know, so they started going 00:13:27.27\00:13:28.90 through all the things that they 00:13:28.90\00:13:30.17 were doing. 00:13:30.17\00:13:31.11 And I realized at that moment 00:13:31.11\00:13:33.07 that they were actually talking 00:13:33.07\00:13:34.71 about me. 00:13:34.71\00:13:35.74 And so it was at that moment 00:13:36.21\00:13:39.01 that I'm like, I have to tell 00:13:39.01\00:13:40.72 myself to keep breathing, right? 00:13:40.72\00:13:42.48 I realized the situation and how 00:13:42.48\00:13:44.92 severe it was and how close to 00:13:44.92\00:13:47.12 death I was. 00:13:47.12\00:13:48.79 I said a short prayer to the 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.36 Lord and I just said, "Lord, if 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.56 You have something else in mind 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.60 for me, you know, show me 00:13:56.60\00:13:59.00 what that is." 00:13:59.00\00:14:00.04 But I said to Him, I said, "If 00:14:00.04\00:14:03.74 You save my life," basically a 00:14:03.74\00:14:06.98 second chance, right? 00:14:06.98\00:14:08.84 "If You save my life, I will go 00:14:08.84\00:14:10.15 wherever You want me to go. 00:14:10.15\00:14:11.41 I will do whatever You want me 00:14:11.41\00:14:12.75 to do." 00:14:12.75\00:14:14.08 We were planning on getting 00:14:14.08\00:14:15.15 married in two months, and so 00:14:15.15\00:14:18.29 you know what? 00:14:18.29\00:14:19.29 The Lord was good. 00:14:19.29\00:14:20.29 He answered my prayer. 00:14:20.29\00:14:21.82 I didn't realize it at the time, 00:14:22.36\00:14:24.56 but it was eight days later I 00:14:24.56\00:14:26.39 was out of the hospital. 00:14:26.39\00:14:28.03 We went to Taco Time and I got 00:14:28.43\00:14:31.13 the hot sauce and tested out how 00:14:31.13\00:14:33.00 well the doctor did on my 00:14:33.00\00:14:34.47 stomach and everything was 100%. 00:14:34.47\00:14:37.01 And so we returned back to 00:14:37.74\00:14:39.97 Hudson Bay and, you know, once I 00:14:39.97\00:14:42.48 had recovered from the injury, 00:14:42.48\00:14:45.58 back working at the shop. 00:14:45.58\00:14:46.92 And it was three and a half 00:14:46.92\00:14:49.12 years later that I just felt 00:14:49.12\00:14:51.45 that, you know, maybe there's 00:14:51.45\00:14:53.09 something else the Lord 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.62 has for me. 00:14:54.62\00:14:55.66 And I said to Lynette, you know, 00:14:55.66\00:14:58.09 "I just feel like the Lord maybe 00:14:58.09\00:14:59.79 is calling us into the 00:14:59.79\00:15:00.83 ministry." 00:15:00.83\00:15:02.13 So we... 00:15:02.13\00:15:03.40 ...packed up our vehicle and 00:15:04.43\00:15:06.60 I don't even know what the 00:15:06.60\00:15:07.70 circumstance was, but we ended 00:15:07.70\00:15:08.67 up out it at Burman, er it was 00:15:08.67\00:15:10.91 CUC at the time. 00:15:10.91\00:15:12.47 We took a trip out to CUC and 00:15:12.47\00:15:14.44 we toured the campus and, you 00:15:14.44\00:15:16.24 know, everything looked great 00:15:16.24\00:15:17.71 and we started looking for 00:15:17.71\00:15:18.95 housing and housing was through 00:15:18.95\00:15:20.88 the roof. 00:15:20.88\00:15:21.68 And so we turned around and we 00:15:21.68\00:15:23.55 went back to Hudson Bay and 00:15:23.55\00:15:25.05 continued on our life machining 00:15:25.05\00:15:26.99 and welding and, you know, 00:15:26.99\00:15:28.82 life as usual. 00:15:28.82\00:15:30.23 It was probably close to seven 00:15:31.13\00:15:34.40 years and... 00:15:34.40\00:15:36.70 ...you know, I felt that feeling 00:15:38.13\00:15:40.74 again, but it wasn't until there 00:15:40.74\00:15:42.47 was a few signs that things were 00:15:42.47\00:15:44.51 happening. 00:15:44.51\00:15:45.54 >> Troy, you were looking for a 00:15:45.54\00:15:47.71 sign from God, and that's 00:15:47.71\00:15:48.98 understandable. 00:15:48.98\00:15:50.01 I mean, Gideon looked for a 00:15:50.01\00:15:51.05 sign, he asked God for a sign. 00:15:51.05\00:15:52.88 You were looking for a sign, you 00:15:52.88\00:15:54.05 didn't really know you were 00:15:54.05\00:15:55.28 looking for a sign, but you 00:15:55.28\00:15:56.38 felt like you were running from 00:15:56.38\00:15:57.45 God, but He sent you three signs 00:15:57.45\00:16:00.32 and they were obvious to you. 00:16:00.32\00:16:01.72 Tell us about those three signs. 00:16:01.72\00:16:02.99 >> Yeah. 00:16:03.89\00:16:04.56 You know, like you say, I didn't 00:16:04.56\00:16:06.93 realize that we were actually 00:16:06.93\00:16:08.40 looking for three signs until 00:16:08.40\00:16:10.50 things started happening. 00:16:10.50\00:16:11.77 The first thing that happened to 00:16:12.43\00:16:14.27 me was I was working in the 00:16:14.27\00:16:17.37 industry and there was a heavy 00:16:17.37\00:16:20.51 door that had to get put back up 00:16:20.51\00:16:22.58 into place after working on this 00:16:22.58\00:16:24.98 piece of equipment. 00:16:24.98\00:16:26.35 And as I was, we were putting 00:16:26.35\00:16:29.35 this door up, I went to reach 00:16:29.35\00:16:32.79 in and pull a chain out of this 00:16:32.79\00:16:35.29 door, and the piece of equipment 00:16:35.29\00:16:38.16 had slipped and the door 00:16:38.16\00:16:41.16 slammed shut and it... 00:16:41.16\00:16:42.86 ...it actually crushed 00:16:44.67\00:16:45.97 this finger. 00:16:45.97\00:16:46.74 I didn't realize, I pulled my 00:16:46.74\00:16:48.14 hand out and my finger was 00:16:48.14\00:16:51.17 hanging there, my bone sticking 00:16:51.17\00:16:52.41 out, and I stuck my hand back in 00:16:52.41\00:16:55.51 the glove and I made my way to 00:16:55.51\00:16:57.91 the parking lot, drove myself to 00:16:57.91\00:16:58.98 the hospital. 00:16:58.98\00:17:00.38 And, you know, we were sent to 00:17:00.38\00:17:02.85 Saskatoon once again and, you 00:17:02.85\00:17:05.82 know, they they repaired 00:17:05.82\00:17:06.82 my finger. 00:17:06.82\00:17:08.09 So that was sign number one. 00:17:08.36\00:17:10.03 The second thing that happened 00:17:10.66\00:17:11.86 was it wasn't that long after. 00:17:11.86\00:17:14.13 In fact, my finger wasn't even 00:17:14.13\00:17:16.53 healed up. 00:17:16.53\00:17:17.33 I-- we had it in gauze and it 00:17:17.33\00:17:20.97 was just a big ball on the end 00:17:20.97\00:17:22.80 of my finger. 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.21 I had a pin in my finger that 00:17:24.21\00:17:28.34 went to the, about the middle of 00:17:28.34\00:17:29.78 my hand. 00:17:29.78\00:17:30.81 And I was doing some, just a 00:17:31.45\00:17:34.85 small job, and I was bending 00:17:34.85\00:17:38.85 some pieces of rebar and I had a 00:17:38.85\00:17:41.89 square tubing locked in the vise 00:17:41.89\00:17:44.03 and I would stick the rebar in 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.89 and I had another piece of 00:17:45.89\00:17:46.83 square tubing that I would slide 00:17:46.83\00:17:47.86 over and I would just bend 00:17:47.86\00:17:49.60 basically hooks, right? 00:17:49.60\00:17:51.57 And so I had 80 of these hooks 00:17:51.57\00:17:53.80 to do and I was going through 00:17:53.80\00:17:55.60 them and I got 60 some of them 00:17:55.60\00:17:57.37 done and didn't realize, but the 00:17:57.37\00:18:00.64 piece in the vise was working 00:18:00.64\00:18:01.71 loose, working itself loose. 00:18:01.71\00:18:03.14 And I think probably I wasn't 00:18:03.14\00:18:04.88 able to tighten the vise enough 00:18:04.88\00:18:06.28 because of my hand was still 00:18:06.28\00:18:08.52 damaged. 00:18:08.52\00:18:09.78 And when I was doing a bend and 00:18:09.78\00:18:13.79 giving it the final, you know, 00:18:13.79\00:18:16.66 push, the whole thing popped out 00:18:16.66\00:18:19.59 of the vise and it ended up 00:18:19.59\00:18:22.43 hitting me right in the mouth. 00:18:22.43\00:18:24.40 Now, it didn't, like it didn't 00:18:24.40\00:18:25.83 touch my lips or anything. 00:18:25.83\00:18:27.17 I must have been smiling as I 00:18:27.17\00:18:28.94 was working, I don't know, but 00:18:28.94\00:18:30.47 it sheared two of my teeth 00:18:30.47\00:18:33.48 off, it just broke them. 00:18:33.48\00:18:35.21 [MIKE] It's miraculous it didn't 00:18:35.21\00:18:36.75 hit you in your head anywhere 00:18:36.75\00:18:38.71 and hurt you, I mean, 00:18:38.71\00:18:40.55 it could have been life 00:18:40.55\00:18:41.38 threatening. 00:18:41.38\00:18:42.02 >> Yeah, like it could have done 00:18:42.08\00:18:43.45 a lot of damage and it... 00:18:43.45\00:18:45.25 And you know, just hard enough 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.16 just to break both of those 00:18:47.16\00:18:48.69 teeth. 00:18:48.69\00:18:49.49 And so we found ourselves 00:18:49.49\00:18:50.83 driving to Swan River, Manitoba, 00:18:50.83\00:18:53.16 to get, you know, my teeth root 00:18:53.16\00:18:55.60 canal-ed. 00:18:55.60\00:18:56.73 And on the way there, you know, 00:18:56.73\00:18:58.80 I'm talking with Lynette and, 00:18:58.80\00:19:00.87 you know, we're saying to 00:19:00.87\00:19:02.17 ourselves, "You know what, the 00:19:02.17\00:19:04.17 Lord has something, gotta have 00:19:04.17\00:19:06.17 something different for us, 00:19:06.17\00:19:07.48 like, you know, how many more 00:19:07.48\00:19:08.98 signs do we need?" 00:19:08.98\00:19:09.84 Like, this was sign number two. 00:19:09.84\00:19:12.25 You know, she was on the phone 00:19:13.62\00:19:14.72 with her mom and her mom's like, 00:19:14.72\00:19:16.12 "You know, you guys better start 00:19:16.12\00:19:17.15 listening," you know, "I don't-- 00:19:17.15\00:19:18.12 I'm scared of, you know, what's 00:19:18.12\00:19:19.62 coming next." 00:19:19.62\00:19:20.69 So that night we get home, it's 00:19:20.69\00:19:24.69 late, we just crawl into bed, 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.63 shut the light off, and there's 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.10 a moment of silence and I didn't 00:19:30.10\00:19:32.23 realize that Lynette was 00:19:32.23\00:19:33.87 praying. 00:19:33.87\00:19:35.14 But we had just gotten into bed 00:19:35.14\00:19:37.21 and I was pulling my hand out 00:19:37.21\00:19:39.44 from underneath the sheets of 00:19:39.44\00:19:41.41 the bed and the pin and my 00:19:41.41\00:19:44.55 finger had a little hook on the 00:19:44.55\00:19:46.85 end, well, it caught on a thread 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.38 under the blanket. 00:19:49.38\00:19:50.59 And when I pulled my hand out, I 00:19:50.59\00:19:53.05 just felt a sensation in-- go 00:19:53.05\00:19:56.39 through my hand and I realized 00:19:56.39\00:19:59.06 that the-- when I felt with my 00:19:59.06\00:20:01.03 other hand that my pin was 00:20:01.03\00:20:02.33 missing and I pulled that pin 00:20:02.33\00:20:05.33 out of my hand. 00:20:05.33\00:20:07.04 And I said to Lynette, I said, 00:20:07.04\00:20:08.94 "You're not gonna believe this." 00:20:08.94\00:20:10.77 And remember, she was, I didn't 00:20:10.77\00:20:12.54 realize she was praying. 00:20:12.54\00:20:14.01 And she said, and she goes, 00:20:14.01\00:20:15.21 "What?" 00:20:15.21\00:20:15.88 I go, "I just pulled the pin out 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.78 of my finger." 00:20:18.78\00:20:19.75 And so we had just got home, you 00:20:19.75\00:20:20.92 know, and now we have to turn 00:20:20.92\00:20:22.38 around and go back to the 00:20:22.38\00:20:23.22 hospital. 00:20:23.22\00:20:23.92 She said, "I can't believe it." 00:20:23.92\00:20:25.65 She said, "I was just praying 00:20:25.65\00:20:27.82 for another sign," she said, 00:20:27.82\00:20:30.33 "from God that, you know, if You 00:20:30.33\00:20:33.26 give me another clear sign," she 00:20:33.26\00:20:34.66 said, "I'll start packing our 00:20:34.66\00:20:36.60 bags tomorrow and, you know, 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.70 we're gonna head to CUC. 00:20:38.70\00:20:41.14 It was a... 00:20:41.14\00:20:42.44 ...it was a Christian university 00:20:43.41\00:20:45.17 in Alberta, in Lacombe. 00:20:45.17\00:20:47.24 It's now called Burman 00:20:47.24\00:20:48.54 University. 00:20:48.54\00:20:49.88 And that's what, that's actually 00:20:49.88\00:20:53.35 what happened. 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.18 Like, she prayed that prayer and 00:20:54.18\00:20:56.42 we got the third sign. 00:20:56.42\00:20:57.29 She started packing the next day 00:20:57.29\00:20:58.69 and we made our decision that, 00:20:58.69\00:20:59.95 you know what, that was it, we 00:20:59.95\00:21:02.29 were gonna go no matter what. 00:21:02.29\00:21:04.06 There was nothing gonna stop us. 00:21:04.06\00:21:05.26 When we look back, we just say, 00:21:05.26\00:21:06.93 you know, we can see that the 00:21:06.93\00:21:07.96 Lord has led the whole way and, 00:21:07.96\00:21:09.60 you know, sometimes we just 00:21:09.60\00:21:11.03 fight it. 00:21:11.03\00:21:11.77 You know, like Jonah, like you 00:21:11.77\00:21:12.70 said, you know, we run from God 00:21:12.70\00:21:14.54 and sometimes we should just, 00:21:14.54\00:21:17.84 you know, be still and just 00:21:17.84\00:21:20.41 listen and, little bit sooner 00:21:20.41\00:21:22.61 than what we do. 00:21:22.61\00:21:24.01 >> So, Pastor Troy, you've been 00:21:24.28\00:21:26.05 in the ministry now for more 00:21:26.05\00:21:28.02 than ten years here in Regina. 00:21:28.02\00:21:31.25 Can you tell us what has been 00:21:31.25\00:21:33.05 the most toughest thing in the 00:21:33.05\00:21:34.56 ministry and also the most 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.76 joyful thing for you? 00:21:36.76\00:21:38.39 >> Yeah, for sure. 00:21:39.49\00:21:40.86 You know, there's lots of things 00:21:40.86\00:21:42.60 that happen. 00:21:42.60\00:21:43.70 But I have to say the most, the 00:21:44.20\00:21:48.70 hardest thing that I've done in 00:21:48.70\00:21:50.74 these ten years... 00:21:50.74\00:21:51.91 ...is... 00:21:53.27\00:21:54.64 ...is actually burying my... 00:21:55.14\00:21:58.38 ...one of my best friend's 00:21:59.45\00:22:01.45 daughters at the age of 14. 00:22:01.45\00:22:03.62 She was same age as Emma, my-- 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.86 one of my daughters. 00:22:07.86\00:22:08.96 And I-- we got the call, we were 00:22:08.96\00:22:12.29 actually going to Hudson Bay 00:22:12.29\00:22:14.00 and, for the weekend and I was, 00:22:14.00\00:22:17.63 I wanted to phone him. 00:22:17.63\00:22:18.93 Lynnette says, "Can you phone... 00:22:18.93\00:22:20.84 ...Dionne, my friend, and ask 00:22:22.50\00:22:26.47 him if we can use the quad 00:22:26.47\00:22:27.78 for the weekend?" 00:22:27.78\00:22:28.64 We were going up, we wanted to 00:22:28.64\00:22:29.51 do some quadding. 00:22:29.51\00:22:30.48 And I got to Melville, we fueled 00:22:30.48\00:22:33.85 up with fuel and I phoned my 00:22:33.85\00:22:36.62 sister and she was just bawling. 00:22:36.62\00:22:41.36 And she, I guess my friend was 00:22:42.19\00:22:45.63 out quadding with his daughter 00:22:45.63\00:22:48.10 and they went for a wiener 00:22:48.10\00:22:49.53 roast, they were coming back... 00:22:49.53\00:22:51.10 ...and the-- it happened right 00:22:52.20\00:22:55.84 in front of him. 00:22:55.84\00:22:57.01 He was waiting for them and the 00:22:57.01\00:23:00.68 quad flipped right in front of 00:23:00.68\00:23:02.88 him and landed on her and 00:23:02.88\00:23:06.41 it took her life and... 00:23:06.41\00:23:07.98 So he asked me to do the 00:23:08.98\00:23:12.09 service and that was... 00:23:12.09\00:23:13.66 ...that was the toughest thing 00:23:16.09\00:23:17.23 I had to do. 00:23:17.23\00:23:18.26 Yeah. 00:23:21.60\00:23:22.90 But the thing that was really 00:23:26.90\00:23:31.64 joyful, the best thing that I've 00:23:31.64\00:23:34.88 done so far and probably will 00:23:34.88\00:23:37.78 have an opportunity one more 00:23:37.78\00:23:38.95 time, but is I was able to give 00:23:38.95\00:23:42.18 my daughter away in marriage. 00:23:42.18\00:23:44.12 [gentle piano music playing] 00:23:44.12\00:23:46.15 ¤¤ 00:23:46.15\00:23:50.76 It was an honour, you know, we 00:23:50.76\00:23:52.93 raise our children and to that 00:23:52.93\00:23:55.46 point where they're ready for, 00:23:55.46\00:23:56.93 you know, starting their own 00:23:56.93\00:23:58.07 family. 00:23:58.07\00:23:58.90 And so, yeah, I was able to do 00:23:58.90\00:24:00.90 the service and give her away 00:24:00.90\00:24:03.84 and Lynnette and I were very 00:24:03.84\00:24:06.34 proud to do that. 00:24:06.34\00:24:07.71 Yeah it was... 00:24:07.71\00:24:08.84 ...it was a moment that we 00:24:09.68\00:24:11.95 really enjoyed. 00:24:11.95\00:24:12.98 [MIKE] Troy, final question. 00:24:16.15\00:24:18.05 If there's someone who's feeling 00:24:19.55\00:24:21.79 right now like they're running 00:24:21.79\00:24:23.16 away from God, what would you 00:24:23.16\00:24:25.63 say to them? 00:24:25.63\00:24:26.66 >> Well, just from my 00:24:29.46\00:24:30.73 experience, you know, you can't 00:24:30.73\00:24:33.60 outrun God, you know, like, you 00:24:33.60\00:24:35.47 know, we shared with Jonah. 00:24:35.47\00:24:36.91 You know, Jonah, there was no 00:24:36.91\00:24:38.64 running away from God. 00:24:38.64\00:24:39.54 You can't hide from God. 00:24:39.54\00:24:41.21 And when you feel God calling 00:24:41.21\00:24:43.14 you, you know, just stop to 00:24:43.14\00:24:47.65 listen to that still small voice 00:24:47.65\00:24:49.48 and, you know, you can probably 00:24:49.48\00:24:52.69 avoid a lot of... [chuckles] 00:24:52.69\00:24:55.32 ...a lot of incidences in my 00:24:55.32\00:24:57.13 case, right? 00:24:57.13\00:24:58.56 If I would have listened sooner, 00:24:58.56\00:24:59.59 you know, I probably would still 00:24:59.59\00:25:00.80 have you know, my digit would 00:25:00.80\00:25:03.16 still work and, you know, I 00:25:03.16\00:25:04.47 wouldn't have five fake teeth in 00:25:04.47\00:25:06.00 the front of my mouth and... 00:25:06.00\00:25:07.94 But I would just say, 00:25:07.94\00:25:09.97 you know... 00:25:09.97\00:25:11.11 ...just listen to that voice 00:25:11.97\00:25:13.51 and, you know, pray about it and 00:25:13.51\00:25:16.48 take it serious because God is 00:25:16.48\00:25:18.11 serious. 00:25:18.11\00:25:19.08 If He calls you, He's not gonna 00:25:19.08\00:25:20.38 give up. 00:25:20.38\00:25:21.18 He's a pursuer and He'll pursue 00:25:21.18\00:25:24.15 you until you're ready. 00:25:24.15\00:25:26.32 Yeah. 00:25:27.16\00:25:28.26 >> Troy, we've come to the end 00:25:28.42\00:25:29.66 of our time together. 00:25:29.66\00:25:31.29 I wonder if you could pray for 00:25:31.29\00:25:33.33 someone. 00:25:33.33\00:25:34.10 Maybe there's
