00:00:45.31\00:00:46.91 When you meet people who are 00:00:46.91\00:00:48.54 generous, the big question is, 00:00:48.54\00:00:50.85 why? 00:00:50.85\00:00:51.65 Why are they so big-hearted? 00:00:51.65\00:00:53.85 >> Today our special guests are 00:00:54.48\00:00:56.32 Ron and Patti Hetland, humble 00:00:56.32\00:00:58.79 farmers from Saskatchewan who 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.76 say, "The reason we give back to 00:01:00.76\00:01:03.53 God is because He has blessed us 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.73 so much in so many ways." 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.56 >> Ron and Patti simply want to 00:01:09.56\00:01:11.47 glorify their Father in Heaven, 00:01:11.47\00:01:13.54 who teaches us that to live is 00:01:13.54\00:01:16.40 to give, and the more they give, 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.57 the more they experience the 00:01:18.57\00:01:20.44 pure joy of giving. 00:01:20.44\00:01:22.51 >> Here is Ron and Patti 00:01:23.04\00:01:24.61 Hetland's story. 00:01:24.61\00:01:26.15 [peppy music playing] in a little town not 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.66 far from here, raised on a farm. 00:02:14.66\00:02:16.67 There was-- I'm the tenth of 00:02:17.33\00:02:20.00 eleven siblings, I attended a 00:02:20.00\00:02:23.71 school in the town of Spalding 00:02:23.71\00:02:27.51 after my older siblings needed 00:02:27.51\00:02:30.68 high school, they had attended 00:02:30.68\00:02:32.41 in a little country school not 00:02:32.41\00:02:33.88 far from here, actually just a 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.15 half mile right from where we 00:02:35.15\00:02:36.32 are right now. 00:02:36.32\00:02:37.25 And that was my beginning 00:02:37.62\00:02:40.96 of life. 00:02:40.96\00:02:41.86 >> I'm Patty Hetland, Ron's 00:02:43.59\00:02:45.39 better half. 00:02:45.39\00:02:46.70 I'm the oldest girl in the 00:02:46.70\00:02:48.56 family. 00:02:48.56\00:02:49.36 I have an older brother and then 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.43 a sister and then three little 00:02:51.43\00:02:52.90 brothers. 00:02:52.90\00:02:53.90 And I lived on a farm just north 00:02:54.37\00:02:56.67 of Quill Lake, about six miles. 00:02:56.67\00:02:58.67 My dad was a farmer and did a 00:02:59.14\00:03:00.88 lot of carpentry throughout the 00:03:00.88\00:03:02.28 winter. 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.28 He was a very hard worker. 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.75 My mom milked cows and sold the 00:03:06.15\00:03:09.82 cream, largely what we lived on 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.62 for groceries and such. 00:03:12.62\00:03:14.39 We have three granddaughters and 00:03:14.96\00:03:16.56 then we got four grandsons right 00:03:16.56\00:03:18.23 in a row and grandchildren are 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.73 what make growing older fun. 00:03:20.73\00:03:22.76 [RON] My farm is-- that I grew 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.20 up on is actually very close 00:03:26.20\00:03:28.00 to here. 00:03:28.00\00:03:28.50 If you followed the crow it'd be 00:03:28.70\00:03:30.01 less than two miles to the 00:03:30.01\00:03:32.51 southeast of us. 00:03:32.51\00:03:33.91 My roots are very deep 00:03:33.91\00:03:36.88 in the farm. 00:03:36.88\00:03:38.08 It was always a joy for me to 00:03:38.88\00:03:40.68 ride the tractor and any time 00:03:40.68\00:03:42.88 Dad would allow me, but my 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.45 favourite of all was sitting on 00:03:44.45\00:03:46.02 that combine. 00:03:46.02\00:03:47.39 I would sit there as long as he 00:03:48.66\00:03:49.96 would allow me. 00:03:49.96\00:03:51.09 There is nothing more pleasant 00:03:51.76\00:03:53.50 than the smell of the soil in 00:03:53.50\00:03:55.40 the spring when you open it up 00:03:55.40\00:03:56.46 for the first time. 00:03:56.46\00:03:57.87 It is a smell that my roots are 00:03:57.87\00:03:59.70 deeply into. 00:03:59.70\00:04:01.17 I became acquainted with Patti's 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.77 faith... 00:04:04.77\00:04:05.81 ...probably because my... 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.48 ...my own father was a seeker. 00:04:10.91\00:04:15.58 He was the son of a Lutheran 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.59 minister, my mother was a 00:04:19.59\00:04:22.42 faithful Christian. 00:04:22.42\00:04:23.69 Dad had a lot of very serious 00:04:24.86\00:04:27.13 questions about religion, he 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.56 liked to argue it a little bit. 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.00 He-- one of the things that he 00:04:31.60\00:04:34.84 really couldn't grasp was how a 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.81 loving God could burn somebody 00:04:36.81\00:04:38.07 forever in hell for a few years 00:04:38.07\00:04:39.77 of rebellion. 00:04:39.77\00:04:40.88 And as a result, I think it kept 00:04:42.04\00:04:45.58 him away. 00:04:45.58\00:04:46.55 But within a couple of years of 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.82 his dying, my brother, an older 00:04:49.82\00:04:54.56 brother, Ray, had come home one 00:04:54.56\00:04:57.99 time and showed him where it 00:04:57.99\00:04:59.83 says in Malachi chapter 4, 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.90 verse 1, it says that the 00:05:02.90\00:05:06.17 wicked shall be as stubble, 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.07 that it-- they will-- that it 00:05:08.07\00:05:12.07 will burn them up, it says, 00:05:12.07\00:05:13.41 and... 00:05:13.41\00:05:14.34 [PATTI] Neither root or branch 00:05:15.04\00:05:16.28 will be left. 00:05:16.28\00:05:16.98 [RON] Right, yeah. 00:05:16.98\00:05:18.21 And, you know, Dad was an old 00:05:18.21\00:05:19.91 farmer, he knew exactly what 00:05:19.91\00:05:21.15 happens when you throw that 00:05:21.15\00:05:22.22 match into the stubble. 00:05:22.22\00:05:23.95 It burns up, it's aggressive 00:05:23.95\00:05:26.49 fire, it burns up and when 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.39 there's nothing more to burn, it 00:05:28.39\00:05:29.76 goes out. 00:05:29.76\00:05:30.73 And... 00:05:31.79\00:05:32.89 ...after reading it, Ray said 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.70 that Dad just simply 00:05:35.70\00:05:36.97 acknowledged and said, "Uh-huh." 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.33 Some weeks later, Ray came back 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.50 and Dad said to Ray, "I believe 00:05:40.50\00:05:43.64 that Jesus has forgiven me for 00:05:43.64\00:05:44.91 my sins." 00:05:44.91\00:05:46.04 And you know it was because that 00:05:46.54\00:05:47.54 one little gem of truth told my 00:05:47.54\00:05:50.81 father that God wasn't Hitler, 00:05:50.81\00:05:53.88 He wasn't Stalin, He wasn't some 00:05:53.88\00:05:55.52 ugly tyrant who was gonna 00:05:55.52\00:05:57.15 punish somebody forever for a 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.39 little bit-- for a few years of 00:05:59.39\00:06:00.82 rebellion. 00:06:00.82\00:06:01.99 And it settled it in his mind, 00:06:01.99\00:06:04.53 he-- it was a conversion 00:06:04.53\00:06:06.56 experience for my father and he 00:06:06.56\00:06:07.96 changed at that point in time. 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.23 One significant memory that I 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.17 have is as a little 00:06:13.17\00:06:15.27 five-year-old standing in front 00:06:15.27\00:06:16.74 of our farmhouse and thinking, 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.61 "I should be a Christian. 00:06:20.61\00:06:21.94 I should become a Christian." 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.35 And making a conscious decision 00:06:23.91\00:06:25.25 as that little five-year-old 00:06:25.25\00:06:26.92 saying, "No, I'd miss out on too 00:06:26.92\00:06:28.42 much fun." 00:06:28.42\00:06:29.52 And later on, I would have been 00:06:30.69\00:06:35.42 about eight years old, and I was 00:06:35.42\00:06:38.63 playing in my garden, in the 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.23 garden with my little farm toys 00:06:40.23\00:06:41.86 as was common, and I saw a line 00:06:41.86\00:06:44.87 of cars on a road just the west 00:06:44.87\00:06:47.14 of our land, an old dirt road 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.94 that was almost never used, a 00:06:48.94\00:06:51.34 whole bunch of cars. 00:06:51.34\00:06:52.91 And so I ran into the house and 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.68 said to Mom, "Mom, what would 00:06:54.68\00:06:56.14 that be all about?" 00:06:56.14\00:06:57.38 And for some reason she said, "I 00:06:57.38\00:07:00.25 think it might be the Adventists 00:07:00.25\00:07:01.45 going down to Lake Edward for a 00:07:01.45\00:07:02.75 baptism." 00:07:02.75\00:07:03.62 [PATTI] That's the lake I was 00:07:04.32\00:07:05.42 baptized at when I was about 12. 00:07:05.42\00:07:07.62 [RON] Now, of course, as a 00:07:08.26\00:07:09.46 teenager, like many teenagers 00:07:09.46\00:07:11.46 do, I got through some silly 00:07:11.46\00:07:14.56 years and things weren't going 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.67 very well for me at home in my 00:07:16.67\00:07:19.67 grade 12. 00:07:19.67\00:07:20.94 And so my-- another brother, 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.44 Ray, who had become an Adventist 00:07:22.44\00:07:23.94 and was studying theology at 00:07:23.94\00:07:25.77 Lacombe, invited me to go there 00:07:25.77\00:07:29.31 to finish off my grade 12 and 00:07:29.31\00:07:30.81 Dad heartily agreed. 00:07:30.81\00:07:32.18 [chuckles] 00:07:32.18\00:07:33.25 And so I went there. 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.75 The experience there wasn't 00:07:35.75\00:07:36.95 very good. 00:07:36.95\00:07:38.05 It was a tough time. 00:07:38.05\00:07:39.22 And-- but then, you know, later 00:07:39.89\00:07:42.29 on, as Patti described earlier, 00:07:42.29\00:07:44.79 we were-- I was baptized and it 00:07:44.79\00:07:48.10 was a solid baptism and I 00:07:48.10\00:07:49.70 believed. 00:07:49.70\00:07:50.73 But you know, in 1979 we'd 00:07:50.73\00:07:53.00 bought a quarter of land, I was 00:07:53.00\00:07:54.80 sitting at church, I had been an 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.50 Adventist for this time for five 00:07:56.50\00:07:57.77 years, I was sitting there very 00:07:57.77\00:07:58.97 bored, and it wasn't because the 00:07:58.97\00:08:01.11 pastor had a bad sermon, it was 00:08:01.11\00:08:02.31 because I wasn't invested in it. 00:08:02.31\00:08:04.01 And so I got up, we'd just 00:08:04.55\00:08:07.35 bought this land, I got up, went 00:08:07.35\00:08:09.15 in the truck, drove out, looked 00:08:09.15\00:08:10.79 at this land 'til I knew church 00:08:10.79\00:08:12.22 was over, went back and picked 00:08:12.22\00:08:15.26 Patti up and our three little 00:08:15.26\00:08:16.32 ones at that point, and I 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.16 realized that right then and 00:08:18.16\00:08:19.83 there that if I didn't make my 00:08:19.83\00:08:21.03 relationship with God my own, I 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.80 would walk away. 00:08:22.80\00:08:24.30 I wasn't a good reader, I hadn't 00:08:24.30\00:08:25.53 been a Bible student, but my 00:08:25.53\00:08:28.04 brother had given me a Living 00:08:28.04\00:08:31.01 Bible which is a paraphrase for 00:08:31.01\00:08:33.41 my baptism. 00:08:33.41\00:08:34.78 I read it cover to cover. 00:08:34.78\00:08:35.94 And it's, you know, things 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.78 started to make sense for me. 00:08:37.78\00:08:39.41 It was an easier read, it's what 00:08:39.41\00:08:40.52 I needed. 00:08:40.52\00:08:41.45 And it grounded me and I've been 00:08:41.45\00:08:43.32 a Bible student ever since. 00:08:43.32\00:08:44.55 It's changed-- by investing in 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.06 it, it has changed my life, by 00:08:47.06\00:08:48.56 investing in the scriptures. 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.09 [gentle piano music playing] 00:08:50.89\00:08:52.53 [RON] When did I meet Patti? 00:08:52.53\00:08:53.90 When I was about 14 years old, I 00:08:55.46\00:08:58.33 went to church with Mark. 00:08:58.33\00:09:01.17 And we walked into the foyer and 00:09:02.27\00:09:04.44 standing on the top of these 00:09:04.44\00:09:05.57 stairs that leads into the 00:09:05.57\00:09:06.81 sanctuary was this cute little 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.58 girl, she was probably 11 or 12. 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.45 And I made a very real mental 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.82 note saying, "Hm, she's a cute 00:09:13.82\00:09:15.58 little girl." 00:09:15.58\00:09:16.55 Little did I know that I was 00:09:17.09\00:09:18.59 looking at my wife-to-be. 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.42 >> You lucky guy. [chuckles] 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.03 I met Ron actually on a pathway 00:09:26.66\00:09:30.97 at Marine Lake where we had-- my 00:09:30.97\00:09:33.34 parents and my family had a 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.50 cabin and we went out a couple 00:09:36.50\00:09:39.97 times. 00:09:39.97\00:09:40.81 But then by grade 12, we started 00:09:41.34\00:09:44.61 pretty much going steady. 00:09:44.61\00:09:46.65 And... 00:09:46.65\00:09:47.62 ...I was only 19 and Ronnie was 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.55 21 when we got married. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.79 Yeah, my dad was raised in an 00:09:57.09\00:09:58.53 Adventist home. 00:09:58.53\00:10:00.03 His maternal grandfather had 00:10:00.03\00:10:02.50 immigrated from England in 1905 00:10:02.50\00:10:05.27 and on the way over, he ran into 00:10:05.27\00:10:08.50 a storm at sea for about three 00:10:08.50\00:10:11.17 weeks. 00:10:11.17\00:10:12.11 And he had made a promise to God 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.14 during that time that if He 00:10:14.14\00:10:15.34 saved his life, he would do 00:10:15.34\00:10:16.71 something for Him some day. 00:10:16.71\00:10:18.68 Well, he got to Canada and 00:10:18.68\00:10:20.58 forgot about his promise for 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.15 about 20 years until a 00:10:22.15\00:10:24.05 colporteur came by and sold him 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.19 the book, The Great Controversy. 00:10:26.19\00:10:28.82 So Grandpa read this book and 00:10:28.82\00:10:30.76 started sharing what he'd 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.16 learned with his neighbours, 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.23 looked into the, you know, 00:10:34.23\00:10:35.73 learned the Adventist faith and 00:10:35.73\00:10:39.07 started a church. 00:10:39.07\00:10:40.57 My dad was very active in the 00:10:41.04\00:10:42.84 church when I was a young girl. 00:10:42.84\00:10:45.21 Oh, and I wanted to show you 00:10:45.21\00:10:47.48 this Bible. 00:10:47.48\00:10:48.71 My dad gave me-- I hadn't seen 00:10:48.71\00:10:51.58 anything, heard anything about 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.11 this Bible until... 00:10:53.11\00:10:54.88 ...oh, probably... 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.25 ...20 years ago when he gave it 00:10:57.92\00:10:59.82 to me for Christmas. 00:10:59.82\00:11:01.02 So it was quite a keepsake 00:11:01.02\00:11:03.36 because my great grandpa, the 00:11:03.36\00:11:05.26 one that had immigrated, had 00:11:05.26\00:11:06.90 received this Bible from his mom 00:11:06.90\00:11:09.30 in 1870 so it's quite an 00:11:09.30\00:11:11.63 heirloom for me to have. 00:11:11.63\00:11:13.30 When I was eight years old, my 00:11:17.37\00:11:19.44 grandfather, Dad's dad, was 00:11:19.44\00:11:23.04 mixing feed for his turkeys and 00:11:23.04\00:11:25.75 he got-- he went to step up onto 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.02 the power take-off on the 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.28 tractor to look and see how the, 00:11:29.28\00:11:33.02 you know, how full the trailer 00:11:33.02\00:11:36.02 was with the feed and he got his 00:11:36.02\00:11:38.09 foot caught in the power 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.26 take-off which resulted in three 00:11:39.26\00:11:42.46 amputations because he had a 00:11:42.46\00:11:44.90 heart condition and poor 00:11:44.90\00:11:46.30 circulation and gangrene set in. 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.57 And so he'd lost his foot 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.74 initially, just above the ankle 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.54 and ended up losing it right up 00:11:52.54\00:11:54.41 to the top of his thigh almost. 00:11:54.41\00:11:56.88 So my dad bought his land and 00:11:57.71\00:12:01.78 that led to other-- that really 00:12:01.78\00:12:05.85 changed our lives. 00:12:05.85\00:12:07.26 Due to broken promises and 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.56 gossip and jealousy and then the 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.53 increased debt load that my dad 00:12:12.53\00:12:14.46 incurred, he started to drink. 00:12:14.46\00:12:18.27 And so our home that had once 00:12:18.27\00:12:19.73 been so happy, was very 00:12:19.73\00:12:21.80 different than it had been. 00:12:21.80\00:12:23.44 But I had the privilege in 2012, 00:12:24.54\00:12:29.54 2013, of seeing my dad come back 00:12:29.54\00:12:32.01 to the Lord. 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.42 He was diagnosed with cancer on 00:12:34.08\00:12:38.45 his abdomen in May of 2012 and 00:12:38.45\00:12:42.02 he had that tumor removed. 00:12:42.02\00:12:44.26 And then by November of that 00:12:44.86\00:12:47.60 year, he was told that he had 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.23 cancer on his lungs. 00:12:50.23\00:12:51.77 Then on December 18th, my 00:12:53.23\00:12:57.47 youngest brother's 00:12:57.47\00:12:58.47 daughter-in-law was working at 00:12:58.47\00:13:00.54 the emergency hospital in 00:13:00.54\00:13:02.21 Saskatoon where Dad was and she 00:13:02.21\00:13:07.05 came into Dad's room that 00:13:07.05\00:13:08.55 morning and found him sobbing 00:13:08.55\00:13:10.79 because the doctor had just come 00:13:11.79\00:13:13.36 in and told him that the 00:13:13.36\00:13:14.96 treatment for the cancer on his 00:13:14.96\00:13:16.36 lungs was now on hold because 00:13:16.36\00:13:18.86 they had discovered cancer in 00:13:18.86\00:13:20.80 his blood and his bones. 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.46 So... 00:13:23.87\00:13:24.87 It was, I mean, it was just 00:13:27.04\00:13:30.61 horrific news for us to hear. 00:13:30.61\00:13:32.74 But during that time, I saw... 00:13:33.51\00:13:36.24 ...I saw a change in my dad. 00:13:36.85\00:13:39.08 When I was in Quill Lake with 00:13:40.15\00:13:42.02 Mom helping Dad with his care, 00:13:42.02\00:13:44.02 he would say to me in the 00:13:44.85\00:13:45.85 morning, "Well, we'll watch the 00:13:45.85\00:13:47.76 news and we'll listen to the 00:13:47.76\00:13:50.03 weather and then we'll have 00:13:50.03\00:13:51.49 worship and you can get me ready 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.26 for the day." 00:13:53.26\00:13:54.46 And then at night, it was the 00:13:54.46\00:13:55.63 same kind of scenario, "We'll, 00:13:55.63\00:13:57.57 you know, listen to the news and 00:13:57.57\00:13:59.70 the weather and have worship and 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.97 then you can get me ready 00:14:01.97\00:14:03.30 for bed." 00:14:03.30\00:14:04.04 And I hadn't heard my dad 00:14:04.04\00:14:05.41 initiate worship since I was 00:14:05.41\00:14:07.18 eight years old so it was really 00:14:07.18\00:14:09.78 quite thrilling. 00:14:09.78\00:14:11.05 One day Dad said to me, 00:14:13.42\00:14:16.42 "Patti come here, I need to 00:14:16.42\00:14:17.45 talk to you." 00:14:17.45\00:14:18.49 And he said, "Do you think that 00:14:19.35\00:14:21.26 God will forgive me for all the 00:14:21.26\00:14:24.33 mean things I've done, all the 00:14:24.33\00:14:25.83 people I've hurt?" 00:14:25.83\00:14:27.10 And so I said, "Well, have you, 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.30 you know, have you told them 00:14:29.30\00:14:30.67 that you're sorry? 00:14:30.67\00:14:31.67 Have you asked their 00:14:31.67\00:14:32.43 forgiveness?" 00:14:32.43\00:14:33.10 And he said, "Well, of course 00:14:33.10\00:14:34.44 I have." 00:14:34.44\00:14:35.27 And so I said, "Well, then, you 00:14:35.87\00:14:37.41 know, the Bible tells us if we 00:14:37.41\00:14:38.84 confess our sins, He's faithful 00:14:38.84\00:14:40.58 and just to forgive us our sins 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.44 and to cleanse from all 00:14:42.44\00:14:43.45 unrighteousness." 00:14:43.45\00:14:44.95 And then just a couple days 00:14:45.75\00:14:47.18 later, he said, "Do you really 00:14:47.18\00:14:50.19 think God has forgiven me for my 00:14:50.19\00:14:51.92 sins?" and I said to him, "Dad, 00:14:51.92\00:14:54.62 you've confessed. 00:14:54.62\00:14:56.76 You have to believe that even 00:14:57.33\00:14:59.59 though you don't feel that 00:14:59.59\00:15:02.13 forgiveness, you have to accept 00:15:02.13\00:15:04.03 it by faith because that's what 00:15:04.03\00:15:05.77 He's promised in His word." 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.97 And then he seemed to have 00:15:07.97\00:15:09.47 peace. 00:15:09.47\00:15:10.64 My dad died on February 18th, my 00:15:12.14\00:15:17.41 mom's birthday, two months to 00:15:17.41\00:15:18.98 the day since he got the 00:15:18.98\00:15:21.12 diagnosis of the bone and blood 00:15:21.12\00:15:22.72 cancer. 00:15:22.72\00:15:23.59 He died in my brother's arms and 00:15:24.02\00:15:25.89 because it had been my mom's 00:15:25.89\00:15:28.22 birthday, many family were there 00:15:28.22\00:15:30.76 to be with him in his last 00:15:30.76\00:15:32.19 moments, so... 00:15:32.19\00:15:33.29 >> It was interesting to see the 00:15:33.86\00:15:36.56 change that occurred in him. 00:15:36.56\00:15:38.73 And I saw the same thing in my 00:15:39.30\00:15:40.64 own father, you know, within the 00:15:40.64\00:15:42.54 last literally months of 00:15:42.54\00:15:44.37 his life. 00:15:44.37\00:15:45.24 It says in the Bible that God 00:15:46.17\00:15:49.04 will wipe away every tear from 00:15:49.04\00:15:50.05 their eyes and this is in 00:15:50.05\00:15:51.41 heaven, this isn't, you know, 00:15:51.41\00:15:53.98 down here on this earth. 00:15:53.98\00:15:55.08 And so there will be some tears 00:15:55.08\00:15:57.22 shed in heaven because when we 00:15:57.22\00:15:58.85 get there, we will see some of 00:15:58.85\00:16:00.82 the mistakes that we made and 00:16:00.82\00:16:01.82 the effect that it had on others 00:16:01.82\00:16:03.06 perhaps. 00:16:03.06\00:16:03.99 But you know the Bible is-- all 00:16:04.39\00:16:06.90 will be settled in heaven. 00:16:06.90\00:16:08.33 God will wipe away the tears. 00:16:09.10\00:16:11.03 Those tears that are there will 00:16:11.03\00:16:12.33 not remain through our existence 00:16:12.33\00:16:14.77 in heaven, they will be-- we 00:16:14.77\00:16:16.27 will be free. 00:16:16.27\00:16:17.37 God has literally settled 00:16:17.94\00:16:20.54 everything at that point. 00:16:20.54\00:16:21.81 We will have perfect peace. 00:16:21.81\00:16:23.78 My brother, Ray, and his wife, 00:16:26.82\00:16:28.32 Jane, and Patti and I have been 00:16:28.32\00:16:30.02 doing some work in the 00:16:30.02\00:16:31.05 Philippines since about 2013. 00:16:31.05\00:16:33.39 I was there-- we were there for 00:16:34.19\00:16:35.56 a period of time, 00:16:35.56\00:16:37.06 back in 2017 again to develop 00:16:37.06\00:16:40.73 some more work that was going in 00:16:40.73\00:16:42.16 an area that we have 00:16:42.16\00:16:43.00 an interest in. 00:16:43.00\00:16:44.17 And in 2019, I was there again 00:16:44.63\00:16:47.07 myself, met with the Director of 00:16:47.07\00:16:49.60 Education for the area, 00:16:49.60\00:16:51.04 who had some very interesting 00:16:52.14\00:16:54.98 perspective on things. 00:16:54.98\00:16:56.88 He said that the United Nations 00:16:56.88\00:17:00.28 has stated that the... 00:17:00.28\00:17:04.15 ...education is a right, 00:17:05.19\00:17:06.82 it's not a privilege. 00:17:06.82\00:17:08.39 And he said there are 2,600 00:17:08.39\00:17:09.59 children in this area that have 00:17:09.59\00:17:11.96 no access to education of 00:17:11.96\00:17:14.13 any sort. 00:17:14.13\00:17:14.93 So this area is predominantly 00:17:16.63\00:17:19.83 made up of indigenous people, 00:17:19.83\00:17:21.64 it's the Lumads, they're-- 00:17:21.64\00:17:24.24 the areas that we are into is a 00:17:25.14\00:17:28.08 mountainous area, the villages 00:17:28.08\00:17:30.55 that we are working in have no 00:17:30.55\00:17:32.25 road access. 00:17:32.25\00:17:33.55 And so everything is gone in, 00:17:34.65\00:17:36.92 you go in by foot sometimes, 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.09 it's a two-and-a-half-hour walk 00:17:38.09\00:17:39.85 or two-hour walk at least to get 00:17:39.85\00:17:41.19 into these places. 00:17:41.19\00:17:42.39 So we have been sponsoring 00:17:43.36\00:17:46.90 schools and we have five 00:17:46.90\00:17:49.10 villages now that there are 00:17:49.10\00:17:50.37 schools involved in. 00:17:50.37\00:17:51.60 We... 00:17:52.33\00:17:53.30 ...provide stipends for the 00:17:53.97\00:17:56.40 teachers, the missionaries, 00:17:56.40\00:17:58.31 we provide materials and 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.84 occasionally some facilities 00:18:00.84\00:18:02.94 as well. 00:18:02.94\00:18:03.95 We also provide a stipend for an 00:18:04.85\00:18:07.45 agricultural specialist who has 00:18:07.45\00:18:09.25 gone into these villages and he 00:18:09.25\00:18:11.19 teaches gardening to the 00:18:11.19\00:18:12.69 children and the parents are 00:18:12.69\00:18:14.19 involved. 00:18:14.19\00:18:14.99 He actually works with the... 00:18:15.59\00:18:17.23 ...the adults, the men, to some 00:18:18.96\00:18:20.06 extent to teach them farming 00:18:20.06\00:18:21.73 practices. 00:18:21.73\00:18:22.70 It's an important work, but it's 00:18:23.93\00:18:25.50 a very rewarding work as well. 00:18:25.50\00:18:27.10 We've found it's just necessary, 00:18:28.14\00:18:30.67 it just needs to be done. 00:18:30.67\00:18:32.61 There's a group here that has 00:18:34.68\00:18:35.68 been working with the Canadian 00:18:35.68\00:18:37.28 Foodgrains Bank for a number of 00:18:37.28\00:18:38.98 years. 00:18:38.98\00:18:39.81 The Canadian Foodgrains Bank was 00:18:40.42\00:18:42.55 established in 1983 when prior 00:18:42.55\00:18:45.99 to that, a group of Mennonite 00:18:45.99\00:18:48.19 farmers who, at the time, were 00:18:48.19\00:18:50.46 unable to sell their grain 00:18:50.46\00:18:51.66 because of the quota systems 00:18:51.66\00:18:53.43 while people in Bangladesh and 00:18:53.43\00:18:55.16 other countries in the world 00:18:55.16\00:18:56.16 were literally starving, said, 00:18:56.16\00:18:58.13 "This isn't right." 00:18:58.13\00:18:59.47 And so they would literally 00:18:59.47\00:19:00.70 bagged up grain and sent it 00:19:00.70\00:19:02.50 over, with the, you know, 00:19:02.50\00:19:05.44 support of the Canadian 00:19:05.44\00:19:06.37 government. 00:19:06.37\00:19:07.34 From that it developed into an 00:19:07.58\00:19:10.21 organization because other 00:19:10.21\00:19:12.45 people from other denominations 00:19:12.45\00:19:14.08 said, "This is a good thing, we 00:19:14.08\00:19:15.45 wanna be involved." 00:19:15.45\00:19:16.25 And so presently there are 00:19:16.25\00:19:17.82 actually 15 non-governmental 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.92 organizations, church sponsored, 00:19:19.92\00:19:22.99 that are involved in this who, 00:19:23.79\00:19:27.03 through the money that is 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.20 supplied to them, draw out of 00:19:28.20\00:19:29.43 this bank and at various 00:19:29.43\00:19:31.67 projects that are-- that they 00:19:31.67\00:19:33.57 have, that they're funding and 00:19:33.57\00:19:35.34 providing throughout the world. 00:19:35.34\00:19:36.97 Mostly emergency aid, but some 00:19:36.97\00:19:38.41 development as well. 00:19:38.41\00:19:39.77 The Canadian government is 00:19:39.77\00:19:40.91 volving-- is involved in this to 00:19:40.91\00:19:42.68 the tune of about $30 million a 00:19:42.68\00:19:44.28 year to-- of matching funds that 00:19:44.28\00:19:46.35 comes from the various projects 00:19:46.35\00:19:48.42 that goes into the Canadian 00:19:48.42\00:19:49.65 Foodgrains Bank. 00:19:49.65\00:19:50.79 In 1998, there was two men, two 00:19:51.19\00:19:54.56 of my neighbours that said, "We 00:19:54.56\00:19:56.79 should look into getting a 00:19:56.79\00:19:58.19 project going here," and so they 00:19:58.19\00:20:00.53 did something with it. 00:20:00.53\00:20:01.76 They called a little meeting of 00:20:01.76\00:20:02.76 anybody that might be interested 00:20:02.76\00:20:04.17 in getting involved. 00:20:04.17\00:20:05.30 And so as a result, six of us 00:20:05.30\00:20:08.44 formed a committee. 00:20:08.44\00:20:09.50 And in 1998, we rented 40 acres 00:20:10.67\00:20:14.14 of land out of which $3,000 was 00:20:14.14\00:20:17.88 the net proceeds. 00:20:17.88\00:20:18.71 It wasn't a lot, but it was the 00:20:18.71\00:20:20.15 starting seed. 00:20:20.15\00:20:21.08 Ninety-nine, we rented 66 acres. 00:20:21.52\00:20:25.62 In 2000, 00:20:25.62\00:20:26.82 it was 80 acres. 00:20:26.82\00:20:28.99 In 2002, it took in the whole 00:20:28.99\00:20:32.49 piece of land which was 146 00:20:32.49\00:20:34.23 acres. 00:20:34.23\00:20:35.33 It has raised in excess of 00:20:35.33\00:20:37.67 $900,000 in the 00:20:37.67\00:20:40.97 25 years and 25 crops that had 00:20:40.97\00:20:43.07 been growing. 00:20:43.07\00:20:44.37 Last year alone we sent in 00:20:44.37\00:20:45.74 $90,000 to the Canadian 00:20:45.74\00:20:48.01 Foodgrains Bank and that money 00:20:48.01\00:20:50.85 alone multiplied by four, you 00:20:50.85\00:20:53.75 know, which is matching federal 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.78 money, you know, takes it into 00:20:55.78\00:20:57.45 the millions. 00:20:57.45\00:20:58.59 The Canadian Foodgrains Bank's 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.62 slogan is "A Christian Response 00:21:01.62\00:21:03.66 to Hunger." 00:21:03.66\00:21:04.56 And so, you know, when you think 00:21:05.23\00:21:06.33 about it, the three and a half 00:21:06.33\00:21:07.50 years that Jesus was in His 00:21:07.50\00:21:09.86 public ministry, a lot of the 00:21:09.86\00:21:11.67 work that He was doing was 00:21:11.67\00:21:13.03 simply helping others, He was 00:21:13.03\00:21:15.20 healing, He was feeding the 00:21:15.20\00:21:18.04 needy and... 00:21:18.04\00:21:19.94 And so I believe this is a 00:21:20.51\00:21:22.64 carry-- a continuation of the 00:21:22.64\00:21:24.05 work that Jesus started. 00:21:24.05\00:21:25.61 He not only fed them, but He 00:21:25.61\00:21:26.78 said, He bade them, "Follow Me." 00:21:26.78\00:21:29.08 And so through this work, we are 00:21:29.58\00:21:31.29 providing a necessary assistance 00:21:31.29\00:21:34.82 to people who are in great need 00:21:34.82\00:21:36.52 and it's because it's a 00:21:37.83\00:21:39.36 Christian response to hunger, 00:21:39.36\00:21:41.03 because Jesus is saying, "Now 00:21:41.03\00:21:42.83 follow Me." 00:21:42.83\00:21:44.03 Our committee with the 00:21:45.87\00:21:47.77 Foodgrains Bank, the local 00:21:47.77\00:21:48.77 project committee is Spalding 00:21:48.77\00:21:50.17 Growers, Spalding Naicam Growers 00:21:50.17\00:21:52.27 Project, is consisting right 00:21:52.27\00:21:55.24 now of 13 members, mostly young, 00:21:55.24\00:21:59.78 intelligent, innovative, 00:21:59.78\00:22:02.92 committed people, young farmers. 00:22:02.92\00:22:05.65 And these are people who are 00:22:05.65\00:22:08.39 doing it because it's right. 00:22:08.39\00:22:11.23 There's nothing in it for 00:22:11.23\00:22:12.66 themselves, they're not gaining 00:22:12.66\00:22:14.10 any praise or any financial 00:22:14.10\00:22:16.10 advantage whatsoever. 00:22:16.10\00:22:17.20 It's just a group of people who 00:22:17.20\00:22:18.47 have decided that this is 00:22:18.47\00:22:19.93 something that is of value. 00:22:19.93\00:22:22.47 And it is of value. 00:22:22.47\00:22:23.94 And they're-- 00:22:23.94\00:22:25.07 I just really appreciate working 00:22:25.07\00:22:27.18 with this group. 00:22:27.18\00:22:28.44 >> Ron and Patti, clearly your 00:22:31.31\00:22:32.98 faith is very important to you 00:22:32.98\00:22:35.38 and just motivates you and I can 00:22:35.38\00:22:36.89 see that it gets you out of bed 00:22:36.89\00:22:37.89 every morning. 00:22:37.89\00:22:38.82 Tell us about your devotional 00:22:38.82\00:22:39.85 life and what that looks like. 00:22:39.85\00:22:41.72 >> Well, this fall I picked up a 00:22:42.19\00:22:44.33 journalling book at the ABC. 00:22:44.33\00:22:46.49 So I'm reading through my Bible 00:22:46.49\00:22:48.13 again and every day there's 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.87 sections that you read in the 00:22:50.87\00:22:52.47 Old and New Testament. 00:22:52.47\00:22:54.57 And I've always enjoyed 00:22:54.57\00:22:55.97 journalling and it-- so I make 00:22:55.97\00:22:57.61 notes on what has struck me from 00:22:57.61\00:23:00.48 the scripture and then there's 00:23:00.48\00:23:01.74 room to, you know, put your own 00:23:01.74\00:23:03.98 thoughts in there so I'm 00:23:03.98\00:23:05.05 enjoying that. 00:23:05.05\00:23:06.21 We study our Sabbath School 00:23:06.75\00:23:09.95 lesson together and have our own 00:23:09.95\00:23:13.02 individual time in the Bible. 00:23:13.02\00:23:14.82 >> Patti, I also enjoy 00:23:15.26\00:23:16.76 journalling, so... 00:23:16.76\00:23:17.96 [Patti laughs] 00:23:17.96\00:23:18.73 ...we're one of a kind. 00:23:18.73\00:23:20.46 >> Well, I'm a bit attention 00:23:21.56\00:23:22.70 deficit and the journalling 00:23:22.70\00:23:24.37 helps me keep my focus. 00:23:24.37\00:23:25.93 [laughter] 00:23:25.93\00:23:27.30 >> Well, I discovered many years 00:23:28.44\00:23:29.70 ago is that the time to devote 00:23:29.70\00:23:33.78 to the scriptures, to prayer, is 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.34 first thing in the morning, I'm 00:23:36.34\00:23:37.25 talking early. 00:23:37.25\00:23:38.51 And so, you know, that time has 00:23:38.51\00:23:40.88 for years been just the 00:23:40.88\00:23:42.28 foundation of my day, the 00:23:42.28\00:23:43.72 foundation of my life and 00:23:43.72\00:23:45.59 maintain it, so... 00:23:45.59\00:23:47.02 >> Yeah, if you don't get up in 00:23:47.42\00:23:48.46 the morning early, there's 00:23:48.46\00:23:49.72 always distractions that keep 00:23:49.72\00:23:51.33 you from that special time. 00:23:51.33\00:23:54.03 We get cut short if we wait too 00:23:55.43\00:23:57.47 late in the day to start. 00:23:57.47\00:23:59.27 [REN巿 Ron and Patti, do you 00:24:00.37\00:24:01.64 have a favourite Bible verse 00:24:01.64\00:24:03.71 that you can share with us? 00:24:03.71\00:24:05.61 >> Well, I have several, but I 00:24:07.61\00:24:10.08 think the one that stands out in 00:24:10.08\00:24:11.35 my mind at the moment is 1 John 00:24:11.35\00:24:13.52 4:8 that says... 00:24:13.52\00:24:15.78 One of the shortest verses in 00:24:17.59\00:24:18.85 the Bible, but it's a summation 00:24:18.85\00:24:19.99 of His care for us. 00:24:19.99\00:24:22.56 >> I guess with so much thinking 00:24:23.83\00:24:25.13 about the past, the verse that 00:24:25.13\00:24:28.46 comes to my mind initially is 00:24:28.46\00:24:31.93 what I learned when I was young 00:24:31.93\00:24:34.07 that says... 00:24:34.07\00:24:35.47 But... 00:24:42.88\00:24:43.91 ...my kinda go-to verse as an 00:24:44.85\00:24:46.82 adult has been from Psalms 46, 00:24:46.82\00:24:50.22 verse 1 that says... 00:24:50.22\00:24:52.85 And then verse 10 of that 00:24:57.59\00:24:59.19 chapter that says... 00:24:59.19\00:25:00.86 >> Ron, as we close our time 00:25:08.24\00:25:09.70 together, I wonder if you could 00:25:09.70\00:25:10.94 pray for our viewers. 00:25:10.94\00:25:12.74 Maybe there's someone who is 00:25:12.74\00:25:14.88 feeling maybe a bit down right 00:25:14.88\00:25:16.34 now or would like to know for 00:25:16.34\00:25:19.25 certain that God is working in 00:25:19.25\00:25:22.12 their lives today, that they 00:25:22.12\00:25:23.59 need to see His power. 00:25:23.59\00:25:25.55 Do you think you could pray for 00:25:25.55\00:25:27.09 such a person right now? 00:25:27.09\00:25:28.29 >> Mm-hm. 00:25:28.29\00:25:28.96 Yeah, let's pray. 00:25:29.29\00:25:30.19 Dear Father... 00:25:30.59\00:25:31.56 ...thank You that You are a God 00:25:32.86\00:25:35.00 of mercy, of care and love. 00:25:35.00\00:25:36.77 And I wanna pray for each 00:25:37.77\00:25:39.13 individual who is watching this 00:25:39.13\00:25:41.70 telecast at this moment. 00:25:41.70\00:25:43.81 I know there are precious souls, 00:25:44.11\00:25:46.07 Lord, who are longing for a 00:25:46.07\00:25:47.78 revelation of Your character, of 00:25:47.78\00:25:49.84 Your love, of Your mercy. 00:25:49.84\00:25:51.55 So may your hand be upon them 00:25:51.55\00:25:52.81 right now and may the Holy 00:25:52.81\00:25:53.88 Spirit touch their lives. 00:25:53.88\00:25:55.55 May they lay their head on 00:25:55.95\00:25:57.32 Jesus' gentle breast, that they 00:25:57.32\00:25:59.55 may sense Your presence and Your 00:25:59.55\00:26:01.52 power and Your love, oh God, and 00:26:01.52\00:26:03.63 keep them ever in Your care, 00:26:03.63\00:26:05.03 make them know that the God of 00:26:05.03\00:26:08.10 the universe is by their side, 00:26:08.10\00:26:09.86 that the Creator of all that 00:26:09.86\00:26:11.27 there is has their very lives in 00:26:11.27\00:26:13.30 their hands. 00:26:13.30\00:26:14.10 This is our prayer. 00:26:14.10\00:26:15.64 And thank You for the privilege 00:26:15.64\00:26:16.64 we have of coming before You, 00:26:16.64\00:26:17.91 oh God. 00:26:17.91\00:26:18.67 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.18 [ALL] Amen. 00:26:20.18\00:26:21.21 >> Ron and Patti, thank you so 00:26:22.48\00:26:24.15 much for inviting us to your 00:26:24.15\00:26:25.91 beautiful farm. 00:26:25.91\00:26:27.15 >> Well, thank you for the 00:26:27.45\00:26:28.52 honour of doing this and I just 00:26:28.52\00:26:30.75 pray that this video, this 00:26:30.75\00:26:33.19 presentation will be an 00:26:33.19\00:26:34.49 encouragement to those that 00:26:34.49\00:26:36.26 listen to it. 00:26:36.26\00:26:37.36 Thank you for your ministry. 00:26:37.36\00:26:38.79 >> It's been wonderful, the way 00:26:39.23\00:26:41.26 God has led us providentially 00:26:41.26\00:26:42.80 through this whole experience so 00:26:42.80\00:26:44.43 we thank you very much for 00:26:44.43\00:26:45.33 being here. 00:26:45.33\00:26:46.13 [PATTI] Yeah. 00:26:46.13\00:26:46.94 >> Friends, as Ron confessed, he 00:26:48.74\00:26:51.01 wasn't really interested in 00:26:51.01\00:26:52.17 going to church until he studied 00:26:52.17\00:26:54.38 the Bible for himself. 00:26:54.38\00:26:55.64 >> So we want to help you 00:26:56.14\00:26:57.65 understand the Bible better and 00:26:57.65\00:26:59.75 become wise in your walk 00:26:59.75\00:27:01.58 with God. 00:27:01.58\00:27:02.55 Our free offer is our Bible Bible 00:27:09.99\00:27:12.23 has verifiable answers to life's 00:27:12.23\00:27:14.46 existential questions, including 00:27:14.46\00:27:17.00 God's will for your life. 00:27:17.00\00:27:18.77 [REN巿 Practical answers that 00:27:19.17\00:27:20.70 makes sense and will give you 00:27:20.70\00:27:22.64 assurance for the present and 00:27:22.64\00:27:25.11 the future. 00:27:25.11\00:27:26.07 [MIKE] You, too, can experience 00:27:27.58\00:27:28.58 the fullness of life that is 00:27:28.58\00:27:30.48 found in the words of Jesus when 00:27:30.48\00:27:32.05 He said, "It is written, 'Man 00:27:32.05\00:27:34.45 shall not live by bread alone, 00:27:34.45\00:27:36.72 but by every word that proceeds 00:27:36.72\00:27:39.09 out of the mouth of God.'" 00:27:39.09\00:27:40.89 中 00:27:40.89\00:27:43.69 >> And I've had a really neat 00:27:43.69\00:27:44.89 opportunity open up for me this 00:27:44.89\00:27:46.93 winter. 00:27:46.93\00:27:47.73 A student that I helped years 00:27:48.30\00:27:50.20 ago at school in resource, he 00:27:50.20\00:27:54.14 messaged me one day and said, 00:27:54.14\00:27:56.10 "Mrs. Hetland, could you help my 00:27:56.10\00:27:57.67 step-son like you've helped me 00:27:57.67\00:27:59.17 in the past?" 00:27:59.17\00:28:00.14 So I said, "Oh, man," and then 00:28:00.74\00:28:02.04 he wanted me to help him with 00:28:02.04\00:28:03.38 math which is not my strong 00:28:03.38\00:28:04.75 point. 00:28:04.75\00:28:05.48 So anyway, I've been teaching 00:28:05.88\00:28:07.48 this young boy in grade 6 and 00:28:07.48\00:28:09.68 it's just been such a blessing. 00:28:09.68\00:28:11.62 Like last Monday we had such a 00:28:11.62\00:28:13.25 good session and I saw such 00:28:13.25\00:28:15.26 progress. 00:28:15.26\00:28:16.12 And Ronnie came in the house for 00:28:16.12\00:28:17.99 supper and I was just pumped, it 00:28:17.99\00:28:19.66 just felt so good to see that I 00:28:19.66\00:28:21.70 was actually... 00:28:21.70\00:28:22.70 >> Happy wife, happy life. 00:28:22.70\00:28:24.10 >> ...making a difference. 00:28:24.10\00:28:25.10 [laugh] 00:28:25.10\00:28:26.43 中 00:28:26.94\00:28:48.56 [children singing] 00:28:48.56\00:28:53.06
