Well, "hope" is a big word, 00:03:01.84\00:03:04.95 can mean many things to many 00:03:04.95\00:03:06.25 people, but when we think about 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.75 hope we think about outlook, we 00:03:07.75\00:03:10.39 think about perspective. 00:03:10.39\00:03:12.35 I often have a punch line that 00:03:12.35\00:03:15.49 goes like this, you know, “When 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.43 the outlook seems bad, try the 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.86 up-look.” 00:03:19.86\00:03:20.96 Hope is looking beyond 00:03:20.96\00:03:23.47 circumstances and conditions 00:03:23.47\00:03:25.23 that are limiting that may be 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.07 negative, that may be bad or 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.84 bleak, it inspires a sense of a 00:03:28.84\00:03:32.14 better day, that there's gonna 00:03:32.14\00:03:34.54 be a better outcome. 00:03:34.54\00:03:36.28 And so it's often equated with 00:03:36.28\00:03:38.35 the word, "optimism," and 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.32 there's been a lot of research 00:03:40.32\00:03:42.42 on optimism and hope. 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.15 They're used interchangeably. 00:03:44.15\00:03:46.49 In fact, there is a great 00:03:46.49\00:03:48.06 author, father of modern 00:03:48.06\00:03:51.19 positive psychology, his name 00:03:51.19\00:03:52.99 is Dr. Martin Seligman and he 00:03:52.99\00:03:55.00 wrote a book called The Science 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.03 of Optimism and Hope and he 00:03:56.03\00:03:57.67 talks about the value of 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.37 optimism and hope and how it 00:04:00.37\00:04:01.80 actually has both a positive 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.51 psychological, emotional 00:04:04.51\00:04:05.87 effect, it has a calming 00:04:05.87\00:04:07.18 effect, and also a positive 00:04:07.18\00:04:09.68 physiological effect. 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.28 In fact, science, the science 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.11 of optimism shows that people 00:04:13.11\00:04:15.48 who experience pain and hurt 00:04:15.48\00:04:18.82 and perhaps even with health 00:04:18.82\00:04:20.62 conditions like cancer and 00:04:20.62\00:04:22.59 other terminal or chronic 00:04:22.59\00:04:24.16 diseases, when they turn on the 00:04:24.16\00:04:28.23 tap for hope, when they put it 00:04:28.23\00:04:30.20 on, it actually blocks pain and 00:04:30.20\00:04:34.20 it actually releases certain 00:04:34.20\00:04:36.84 brain chemicals, endorphins and 00:04:36.84\00:04:40.28 other hormones that actually 00:04:40.28\00:04:42.58 can mimic morphine and it also 00:04:42.58\00:04:45.55 induces other positive 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.62 physiological functions such as 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.68 improved respiration, 00:04:49.68\00:04:50.85 circulation, and motor 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.32 function. 00:04:52.32\00:04:53.05 So we certainly see a powerful 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.86 parallel and correlation with 00:04:55.86\00:04:57.83 optimism, hope, and good 00:04:57.83\00:04:59.69 health, mentally and physically 00:04:59.69\00:05:02.10 and I would also like to add 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.73 spiritually. 00:05:03.73\00:05:04.73 >> So on that spiritual note, 00:05:05.23\00:05:06.94 when you're looking upward gives 00:05:06.94\00:05:08.90 you hope, what does the Bible 00:05:08.90\00:05:10.74 say about the health benefits 00:05:10.74\00:05:13.74 of hope? 00:05:13.74\00:05:14.81 >> Wonderful. 00:05:15.44\00:05:16.34 Yeah, I think that's a great 00:05:16.34\00:05:19.25 inquiry, I think many people 00:05:19.25\00:05:21.25 think, "Well, okay, with hope, 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.35 if I could bottle hope in a 00:05:23.35\00:05:24.55 pill, I'll take it," or "If I 00:05:24.55\00:05:26.39 get it at the-- over the 00:05:26.39\00:05:27.99 counter," but hope is a state 00:05:27.99\00:05:30.29 of being, it is a condition of 00:05:30.29\00:05:33.53 the mind, it's a mindset, a 00:05:33.53\00:05:34.96 mentality. 00:05:34.96\00:05:35.80 The Bible specifically talks 00:05:35.80\00:05:36.97 about having hope in God, hope 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.90 that does not disappoint us, 00:05:38.90\00:05:40.64 hope in believing in the God 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.17 of hope. 00:05:42.17\00:05:43.10 And I think one of my favourite 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.07 verses of scripture comes from 00:05:45.07\00:05:46.84 the Old Testament, Psalm 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.48 chapter 42 and especially the 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.45 last verse. 00:05:50.45\00:05:51.05 The whole chapter's great, 00:05:51.05\00:05:52.58 we'll ask our listening and 00:05:52.58\00:05:53.88 viewing friends to take a look 00:05:53.88\00:05:54.98 at it, to read it perhaps later 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.82 on, but the last verse talks 00:05:56.82\00:05:58.25 about saying, "Why art thou 00:05:58.25\00:06:01.06 disquieted, oh soul within me? 00:06:01.06\00:06:03.56 Hope thou in God who yet-- I 00:06:03.56\00:06:06.23 will yet praise Him for He is 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.13 the health of my countenance." 00:06:08.13\00:06:11.20 And that's from the King James 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.23 rendering. 00:06:12.23\00:06:12.93 I love those words. 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.54 Health, hope, looking up to God 00:06:14.54\00:06:17.84 because if I look around me, 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.41 I'll be discouraged, if I look 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.28 within me, I feel depressed, 00:06:21.28\00:06:23.61 but when I look up, hope 00:06:23.61\00:06:26.08 transcends our earthly 00:06:26.08\00:06:28.45 situations that are often 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.09 mundane and even morbid and 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.65 gives us that upward look that 00:06:32.65\00:06:35.22 inspires us. 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.42 >> And, Dr. Saugh, what does 00:06:37.93\00:06:39.89 the research tell us about the 00:06:39.89\00:06:42.50 health benefits of having hope? 00:06:42.50\00:06:44.57 >> Well, certainly. 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.07 As I mentioned, Dr. Seligman, 00:06:46.07\00:06:47.67 and there's another book, it 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.64 was a TED Talk, The Science of 00:06:49.64\00:06:51.31 Optimism: We Are Hard-Wired 00:06:51.31\00:06:54.04 For Hope. 00:06:54.04\00:06:55.18 And in the research in the body 00:06:55.18\00:06:57.45 of literature, it simply shows 00:06:57.45\00:06:59.05 how hope has a powerful effect 00:06:59.05\00:07:02.08 on our mental health and our 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.85 physical health. 00:07:03.85\00:07:04.72 And one of the big aspects of 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.45 hope is when people are dying 00:07:06.45\00:07:08.59 or sick and they feel as if 00:07:08.59\00:07:11.13 there's no way out and they 00:07:11.13\00:07:13.09 actually generate or they 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.46 actually cultivate the thought 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.10 of the fact that this is a 00:07:17.10\00:07:19.07 death sentence for them, the 00:07:19.07\00:07:20.94 doctor says there's nothing 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.04 more we can do for you and they 00:07:22.04\00:07:23.84 don't have any hope, they 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.54 actually deteriorate faster. 00:07:25.54\00:07:27.88 But in studies, it shows that 00:07:27.88\00:07:30.08 those who actually believe in 00:07:30.08\00:07:32.11 hope and hope is rooted in the 00:07:32.11\00:07:35.58 expectation and belief of who 00:07:35.58\00:07:38.09 we are, certain core values and 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.09 beliefs that guide our lives, 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.19 it shows that hope actually has 00:07:42.19\00:07:44.16 a therapeutic benefit on our 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.63 health holistically. 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.33 So it's very fascinating 00:07:49.20\00:07:50.37 science out there and it's 00:07:50.37\00:07:51.60 something that we all need to 00:07:51.60\00:07:53.77 strive for because without 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.40 hope, as someone said... 00:07:56.40\00:07:59.07 Hope makes the difference. 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.65 >> Did you know that animals 00:08:11.29\00:08:12.22 actually experience hope? 00:08:12.22\00:08:13.82 What I find very interesting is 00:08:14.36\00:08:16.46 there was a study done a little 00:08:16.46\00:08:18.13 over 50 years ago where a 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.16 researcher took domesticated 00:08:20.16\00:08:21.56 rats and put them into a jar of 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.67 water, just high enough where 00:08:23.67\00:08:25.43 they couldn't get out and they 00:08:25.43\00:08:26.94 had to struggle a little while. 00:08:26.94\00:08:28.44 The first rat died very 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.81 quickly, within a couple 00:08:30.81\00:08:31.91 minutes, the second rats lasted 00:08:31.91\00:08:33.24 a couple hours, but the other 00:08:33.24\00:08:35.08 nine actually lasted days 00:08:35.08\00:08:38.41 swimming in the water. 00:08:38.41\00:08:39.91 She thought that was interesting 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.28 so she took wild rats, ones 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.12 that are known for their 00:08:44.12\00:08:45.22 aggressiveness in swimming 00:08:45.22\00:08:46.99 behaviours and did the same 00:08:46.99\00:08:48.96 experiment. 00:08:48.96\00:08:49.96 She put them in jars of water 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.89 and went to see how long they 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.70 could last. 00:08:53.70\00:08:54.46 The rats only lasted a few 00:08:55.03\00:08:57.17 minutes before they all 00:08:57.17\00:08:59.17 perished. 00:08:59.17\00:09:00.50 She thought that was incredible 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.24 and she's like, "What is the 00:09:02.24\00:09:03.51 difference between domesticated 00:09:03.51\00:09:04.74 rats or rats that are pets and 00:09:04.74\00:09:08.08 just wild rats?" 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.74 Domesticated rats have hope. 00:09:09.74\00:09:11.58 And that was just a hypothesis 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.58 so she decided to put it 00:09:14.58\00:09:15.52 to the test. 00:09:15.52\00:09:16.52 She took those wild rats and 00:09:16.52\00:09:18.59 did the same experiment all 00:09:18.59\00:09:19.79 over again. 00:09:19.79\00:09:20.76 This time, just before she 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.49 felt that they were about to 00:09:22.49\00:09:24.16 lose hope and give up and 00:09:24.16\00:09:25.79 drown, she took them out, 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.46 warmed them up and put them 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.20 back into the water and every 00:09:29.20\00:09:31.77 single rat outperformed their 00:09:31.77\00:09:34.00 last time by hours. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.10 So this just shows the mighty 00:09:36.60\00:09:40.24 significance between hope and 00:09:40.24\00:09:43.31 health, hope and literal life. 00:09:43.31\00:09:46.85 Hope helps you continue, to 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.75 keep going on when you're 00:09:48.75\00:09:50.35 stressed, when you're in pain, 00:09:50.35\00:09:51.75 when you lose a loved one, when 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.25 it's literally cold outside, 00:09:53.25\00:09:55.46 when you're maybe stuck in an 00:09:55.46\00:09:56.96 avalanche, if you have hope, you 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.73 will hold out longer. 00:09:58.73\00:10:00.96 There was another study done 00:10:00.96\00:10:02.23 with some elderly people to see 00:10:02.23\00:10:05.03 how levels of hope correlated 00:10:05.03\00:10:07.67 with their health conditions 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.57 and senior citizens that said 00:10:09.57\00:10:11.61 that they had more hope or 00:10:11.61\00:10:12.94 rated higher on the hope scale, 00:10:12.94\00:10:14.71 had less chronic illnesses, 00:10:14.71\00:10:16.91 less anxiety and depression, 00:10:16.91\00:10:19.05 and even lived a little longer. 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.65 So hope is very important to 00:10:21.65\00:10:24.25 our health and literally 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.72 life-saving. 00:10:25.72\00:10:26.72 >> And so as we continue 00:10:28.19\00:10:29.46 talking about optimism, there's 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.56 so much research in the 00:10:31.56\00:10:32.66 literature that shows the value 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.43 and the benefits, especially as 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.10 it relates to our mental and 00:10:37.10\00:10:38.70 physical or psychological and 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.64 physiological health. 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.50 There's also the flip side, the 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.57 opposite side of hope. 00:10:44.57\00:10:46.17 People experience extreme 00:10:46.17\00:10:48.68 depression. 00:10:48.68\00:10:50.15 There's a condition or disorder 00:10:50.15\00:10:51.75 called "dysphemia" which is 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.85 also referred to as "long-term" 00:10:54.85\00:10:56.58 or "chronic depression" and 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.89 it's like a panic, it was-- 00:10:58.89\00:11:00.26 used to be called "Panic 00:11:00.26\00:11:01.29 Depressive Disorder," PDD, and 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.49 it's where people lose a sense 00:11:03.49\00:11:06.36 of or lack of interest in 00:11:06.36\00:11:09.20 normal activities. 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.10 They have no energy, they're 00:11:11.10\00:11:14.07 fatigued, they lack the zest 00:11:14.07\00:11:17.71 and the motivation and they 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.91 experience levels of anxiety, 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.81 withdrawal, and feelings of 00:11:21.81\00:11:23.45 inadequacy. 00:11:23.45\00:11:24.81 And that is a very difficult 00:11:24.81\00:11:26.45 and dangerous condition or 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.68 state to be in. 00:11:28.68\00:11:30.05 And so the only way to lift 00:11:30.05\00:11:31.89 someone out of depression is 00:11:31.89\00:11:33.52 really to inspire them with a 00:11:33.52\00:11:34.96 sense of hope because no 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.69 medication in and of itself can 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.86 cure anyone. 00:11:39.86\00:11:41.13 We know that every medication 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.33 has side effects so if we can 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.97 help people naturally, inspire 00:11:44.97\00:11:47.67 them with hope, believing in 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.67 themselves, believing in God, 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.77 believing that they will be 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.34 able to have a better day 00:11:54.34\00:11:55.91 tomorrow, better situation, 00:11:55.91\00:11:57.85 then we actually begin to see 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.25 not only their attitude 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.45 changing, but their whole 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.75 approach to themselves 00:12:03.75\00:12:06.65 and life. 00:12:06.65\00:12:07.56 So we can see how it's 00:12:07.56\00:12:08.92 important to bring that 00:12:08.92\00:12:09.89 balance. 00:12:09.89\00:12:10.66 Many people who have depression 00:12:10.66\00:12:12.86 or diagnosed with depression 00:12:12.86\00:12:14.40 today, it is because they lack 00:12:14.40\00:12:16.60 that high degree of sense of 00:12:16.60\00:12:18.37 hope and optimism in 00:12:18.37\00:12:19.77 their lives. 00:12:19.77\00:12:20.57 According to the World Health 00:12:21.54\00:12:22.60 Organization, over 280 million 00:12:22.60\00:12:26.11 people live with and experience 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.48 depression. 00:12:28.48\00:12:29.34 Essentially, we need hope 00:12:30.05\00:12:33.15 because hope inspires us to 00:12:33.15\00:12:35.22 live not only for today, but 00:12:35.22\00:12:37.32 look at beyond today into 00:12:37.32\00:12:40.16 tomorrow and I believe that 00:12:40.16\00:12:43.02 hope has no expiration date. 00:12:43.02\00:12:45.49 So we need hope. 00:12:45.49\00:12:46.53 I choose to embrace hope and I 00:12:46.53\00:12:48.63 hope each one of us will 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.27 embrace hope for our health, 00:12:50.27\00:12:52.33 our healing, and our wellness. 00:12:52.33\00:12:54.37 >> Hi, everyone. 00:12:56.10\00:12:56.91 My name is God. 00:17:45.79\00:17:48.03 Prayer inspires hope, prayer 00:17:48.03\00:17:50.53 actually lifts our spirit, our 00:17:50.53\00:17:52.90 soul out of the mundane things 00:17:52.90\00:17:55.04 of life. 00:17:55.04\00:17:55.60 In fact, there's a book that 00:17:55.70\00:17:56.60 was written called Prayer Is 00:17:56.60\00:17:58.01 Good Medicine by Dr. Dossey and 00:17:58.01\00:18:00.34 he talks about this powerful 00:18:00.34\00:18:02.21 connection that we can have 00:18:02.21\00:18:03.45 with the Divine and speaking to 00:18:03.45\00:18:06.38 someone who is above and beyond 00:18:06.38\00:18:09.28 our circumstances and 00:18:09.28\00:18:10.55 conditions, even our own 00:18:10.55\00:18:12.79 limitations. 00:18:12.79\00:18:13.86 So prayer has a way of lifting 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.42 us up and like sprouting, as 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.53 you mentioned, prayer actually 00:18:17.53\00:18:19.23 helps us to cultivate our 00:18:19.23\00:18:21.00 relationship with God, with 00:18:21.00\00:18:24.07 this wonderful divine, 00:18:24.07\00:18:25.80 sovereign creator who loves us 00:18:25.80\00:18:28.30 and wants to have a personal 00:18:28.30\00:18:30.01 relationship with us. 00:18:30.01\00:18:31.77 So prayer is just such a 00:18:31.77\00:18:34.54 privilege, in fact, other 00:18:34.54\00:18:35.98 studies have shown by 00:18:35.98\00:18:37.45 Dr. Harold Koenig out of Duke 00:18:37.45\00:18:39.31 University, prayer and 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.28 religious practice actually can 00:18:41.28\00:18:43.72 impact our spiritual and 00:18:43.72\00:18:45.82 physical and mental health in 00:18:45.82\00:18:47.76 many positive ways. 00:18:47.76\00:18:49.22 There is higher levels of 00:18:49.22\00:18:52.56 wellness, there is longevity, 00:18:52.56\00:18:54.76 you know, and there's also 00:18:54.76\00:18:56.40 reduction in hypertension, 00:18:56.40\00:18:58.17 reduction in stress, and lower 00:18:58.17\00:19:00.74 levels of cortisol. 00:19:00.74\00:19:02.30 So we can see that overall 00:19:02.30\00:19:03.87 prayer is valuable in many 00:19:03.87\00:19:06.57 ways, physically, spiritually, 00:19:06.57\00:19:08.94 mentally, and even socially. 00:19:08.94\00:19:12.01 Prayer is a connector, connects 00:19:12.01\00:19:13.92 us with God and I believe it 00:19:13.92\00:19:15.85 also connects with other 00:19:15.85\00:19:16.99 people. 00:19:16.99\00:19:17.79 Prayer actually helps someone 00:19:18.15\00:19:21.19 to connect, as I said before, 00:19:21.19\00:19:23.16 with God, but it also helps 00:19:23.16\00:19:25.09 them to have a sense of power, 00:19:25.09\00:19:29.56 a sense of joy and strength 00:19:29.56\00:19:31.77 beyond themselves. 00:19:31.77\00:19:32.67 You see, as human beings, we 00:19:32.67\00:19:34.14 have limitations, we feel as if 00:19:34.14\00:19:36.47 we've meet-- we've met the end 00:19:36.47\00:19:38.14 of the rope or end of the road, 00:19:38.14\00:19:40.18 but this hope helps people to 00:19:40.18\00:19:42.41 hold onto something that is 00:19:42.41\00:19:43.88 beyond themselves, it 00:19:43.88\00:19:45.28 transcends through the human 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.82 situation and allow us to rely 00:19:47.82\00:19:50.79 on divine or that higher power 00:19:50.79\00:19:54.06 as we often refer to. 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.79 So I really believe that hope 00:19:55.79\00:19:57.79 has something special for us. 00:19:57.79\00:19:59.56 We were actually hard-wired for 00:19:59.56\00:20:01.26 hope and hope inspires us to 00:20:01.26\00:20:03.80 seek the God of hope that can 00:20:03.80\00:20:07.30 give us this wonderful blessing 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.84 and benefit. 00:20:09.84\00:20:10.81 >> I just can't help thinking 00:20:11.27\00:20:12.61 about that beautiful hymn, "We 00:20:12.61\00:20:14.61 have this hope that burns 00:20:14.61\00:20:17.65 within our hearts." 00:20:17.65\00:20:19.28 So when you have hope, it burns 00:20:19.28\00:20:21.78 within your heart, hope in the 00:20:21.78\00:20:24.75 coming of the Lord. 00:20:24.75\00:20:26.25 We're gonna see Jesus again, 00:20:26.25\00:20:28.16 He's coming. 00:20:28.16\00:20:29.52 >> Yes, I actually resonate 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.43 with that. 00:20:31.43\00:20:32.26 You know, when we look around 00:20:32.26\00:20:34.13 us and we look at conditions of 00:20:34.13\00:20:35.63 this world, we can easily 00:20:35.63\00:20:37.40 become discouraged and we can 00:20:37.40\00:20:39.23 lose hope very quickly, but 00:20:39.23\00:20:41.10 when we look to God, when we 00:20:41.10\00:20:43.37 turn our eyes on God, He 00:20:43.37\00:20:45.71 inspires us with that hope to 00:20:45.71\00:20:47.11 know that one day He's coming 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.11 to make all things new, that He 00:20:49.11\00:20:50.78 is still in charge, that He's 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.78 still in control, and He's got 00:20:52.78\00:20:54.55 the whole world in His hands. 00:20:54.55\00:20:56.28 I think of that classic story 00:20:56.28\00:20:58.49 of the miners in Chile that 00:20:58.49\00:21:00.92 were buried, just a quick 00:21:00.92\00:21:01.86 reference, and they were 00:21:01.86\00:21:03.63 trapped for 69 days, 33 miners, 00:21:03.63\00:21:08.66 and they thought of giving up, 00:21:08.66\00:21:12.20 their food was running low, 00:21:12.20\00:21:13.74 water was running low, but 00:21:13.74\00:21:15.34 there were a few believers in 00:21:15.34\00:21:17.17 God that continued to inspire 00:21:17.17\00:21:19.84 the others and say, "We're 00:21:19.84\00:21:21.28 gonna make it, we're gonna see 00:21:21.28\00:21:23.01 our families again, we're gonna 00:21:23.01\00:21:24.21 see our children again, we're 00:21:24.21\00:21:25.58 gonna get to the top." 00:21:25.58\00:21:26.78 And would you believe it, that 00:21:26.78\00:21:28.48 hope inspired them to live 00:21:28.48\00:21:30.85 through that entire ordeal. 00:21:30.85\00:21:32.59 As a result of that, when they 00:21:32.59\00:21:34.76 resurfaced to the top, they 00:21:34.76\00:21:36.62 were rejoicing and celebrating, 00:21:36.62\00:21:38.53 but they named that place, 00:21:38.53\00:21:41.26 "Campamento Esperanza," 00:21:41.26\00:21:44.13 Camp Hope. 00:21:44.13\00:21:46.00 So hope is real, it's tangible, 00:21:46.00\00:21:48.60 not just pie in the sky. 00:21:48.60\00:21:50.34 >> So, Dr. Saugh, are people 00:21:51.31\00:21:53.68 who express religious or 00:21:53.68\00:21:56.41 spiritual faith more hopeful 00:21:56.41\00:21:59.61 and if so, why? 00:21:59.61\00:22:01.88 >> Generally speaking, people 00:22:01.88\00:22:04.25 put their trust, confidence, 00:22:04.25\00:22:05.99 and hope in things, namely 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.69 material things, perhaps their 00:22:08.69\00:22:10.99 house or their bank accounts or 00:22:10.99\00:22:13.90 their education. 00:22:13.90\00:22:15.40 Human beings are hard-wired in 00:22:15.40\00:22:17.33 such a way that we look for to 00:22:17.33\00:22:19.90 putting some hope or confidence 00:22:19.90\00:22:22.10 in something beyond ourselves. 00:22:22.10\00:22:24.27 So for those who have no 00:22:24.27\00:22:26.01 concept or orientation toward 00:22:26.01\00:22:28.11 God, it's in things that are 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.21 transient and temporal, but for 00:22:30.21\00:22:32.31 those who are religious and who 00:22:32.31\00:22:33.75 are believers who have faith, 00:22:33.75\00:22:35.62 they place their hope in things 00:22:35.62\00:22:37.72 that are beyond what will fade 00:22:37.72\00:22:40.39 away or pass away and so they 00:22:40.39\00:22:42.69 naturally have an inclination 00:22:42.69\00:22:45.49 to place their trust and 00:22:45.49\00:22:46.80 confidence in God which they 00:22:46.80\00:22:49.10 know that is safe and secure 00:22:49.10\00:22:51.93 and that hope will last because 00:22:51.93\00:22:54.57 it's not earthly, it's not 00:22:54.57\00:22:55.97 going to, you know, diminish 00:22:55.97\00:22:58.54 or dissipate. 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.58 And so I really believe that 00:23:00.58\00:23:02.21 people who have faith and are 00:23:02.21\00:23:04.81 religious or have trust in God, 00:23:04.81\00:23:07.28 they stand on vantage ground. 00:23:07.28\00:23:09.85 It's more advantageous for them 00:23:09.85\00:23:11.85 because they naturally 00:23:11.85\00:23:13.12 gravitate toward embracing this 00:23:13.12\00:23:15.12 hope in God. 00:23:15.12\00:23:16.29 >> So a final question, 00:23:17.03\00:23:18.89 Dr. Saugh, can you suggest some 00:23:18.89\00:23:21.20 strategies for a person who's 00:23:21.20\00:23:22.96 saying, "Hey, I want more hope 00:23:22.96\00:23:24.73 in my life," what practical 00:23:24.73\00:23:26.84 strategies would you give them? 00:23:26.84\00:23:28.50 >> First I would like to 00:23:29.37\00:23:31.07 suggest replace negative 00:23:31.07\00:23:33.07 thinking with positive thinking. 00:23:33.07\00:23:34.74 Number two, trying to find 00:23:35.71\00:23:37.81 meaning out of life. 00:23:37.81\00:23:39.28 Previously we talked about one 00:23:40.35\00:23:41.85 of my favourite authors, 00:23:41.85\00:23:43.05 writers and inspiring models, 00:23:43.05\00:23:47.26 Dr. Viktor Frankl, he developed 00:23:47.26\00:23:50.79 a unique technique or approach 00:23:50.79\00:23:53.13 theory called "logotherapy" and 00:23:53.13\00:23:56.13 logotherapy is a branch of 00:23:56.13\00:23:57.80 psychotherapy in which this 00:23:57.80\00:24:00.17 comes out of his own personal 00:24:00.17\00:24:01.60 experience where he found 00:24:01.60\00:24:03.10 meaning and made meaning out 00:24:03.10\00:24:05.07 of trials, suffering, and 00:24:05.07\00:24:07.34 difficulty and he believes that 00:24:07.34\00:24:09.28 that's the primary motivational 00:24:09.28\00:24:12.45 force for human beings. 00:24:12.45\00:24:14.42 And so I really would like to 00:24:14.42\00:24:16.12 encourage our listeners and 00:24:16.12\00:24:17.22 viewers to, number two, find a 00:24:17.22\00:24:19.59 way to make meaning out of your 00:24:19.59\00:24:21.62 situation. 00:24:21.62\00:24:22.89 What is that situation 00:24:22.89\00:24:24.16 teaching us? 00:24:24.16\00:24:25.36 We can grow from a situation. 00:24:25.36\00:24:27.40 We can either become better or 00:24:27.40\00:24:29.50 bitter and that difference is 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.53 the hope that inspires us. 00:24:32.53\00:24:34.94 Another consideration is that 00:24:34.94\00:24:36.87 we consider having faith in 00:24:36.87\00:24:40.91 this divine God, this sovereign 00:24:40.91\00:24:42.74 God who loves us, who's created 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.01 us in His image and likeness. 00:24:45.01\00:24:47.02 Isn't it a wonderful and 00:24:47.02\00:24:48.12 comforting thought to know that 00:24:48.12\00:24:49.72 there's a God that we can go to 00:24:49.72\00:24:52.02 when there's no one else to 00:24:52.02\00:24:53.22 turn to, when the doctors say, 00:24:53.22\00:24:55.62 "We've done all that we can," 00:24:55.62\00:24:58.26 when friends say, "I'm sorry, I 00:24:58.26\00:25:00.90 can't help you anymore," when 00:25:00.90\00:25:02.40 the money is funny and the 00:25:02.40\00:25:03.87 change is strange and we're 00:25:03.87\00:25:05.57 down to our wits end, down to 00:25:05.57\00:25:07.70 the last straw and the odds are 00:25:07.70\00:25:09.90 stacked up against us. 00:25:09.90\00:25:11.64 I know that I can go to a God 00:25:11.64\00:25:13.88 where I can lean on His 00:25:13.88\00:25:14.98 everlasting arms and I could 00:25:14.98\00:25:16.64 place my trust, confidence 00:25:16.64\00:25:19.01 completely and hope in Him 00:25:19.01\00:25:20.88 because my faith in God never 00:25:20.88\00:25:23.89 fails because God
