of freedom 00:00:54.38\00:00:56.58 because they do not find 00:00:56.58\00:00:57.55 themselves in jail in a literal 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.62 prison cell, but the truth is 00:00:59.62\00:01:01.96 that many do find themselves 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.19 imprisoned by internal 00:01:04.19\00:01:06.19 struggles such as anxiety, 00:01:06.19\00:01:08.30 worries, habits, and 00:01:08.30\00:01:10.27 compulsions. 00:01:10.27\00:01:11.63 >> And fears, depression, 00:01:11.63\00:01:13.74 addictions, guilt, shame, and 00:01:13.74\00:01:16.54 false assumptions. 00:01:16.54\00:01:18.24 What kind of internal struggles 00:01:18.24\00:01:20.44 have you experienced and how 00:01:20.44\00:01:22.68 are you able to overcome those 00:01:22.68\00:01:24.71 struggles and experience 00:01:24.71\00:01:26.88 freedom? 00:01:26.88\00:01:27.88 >> Today on It Is Written 00:01:27.88\00:01:28.72 Canada you will meet healthcare 00:01:28.72\00:01:30.72 professionals who will share 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.59 with you to experience more 00:01:39.59\00:01:41.73 freedom in your life. 00:01:41.73\00:01:43.60 >> To begin with, we have 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.17 Dr. Danial Saugh, a Christian 00:01:45.17\00:01:47.74 00:02:27.88\00:02:29.31 >> Thank you, it's a pleasure 00:02:29.74\00:02:30.78 to be here with you all. 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.01 [RENÉ] So, Dr. Saugh, we're 00:02:32.61\00:02:33.95 gonna start by putting you on 00:02:33.95\00:02:35.62 the spot and making you feel 00:02:35.62\00:02:38.79 vulnerable by asking you a 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.32 question. 00:02:41.32\00:02:42.56 What kind of personal internal 00:02:42.56\00:02:46.33 struggles have you experienced 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.53 and how have you been able to 00:02:48.53\00:02:50.53 overcome those struggles and 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.97 experience freedom? 00:02:52.97\00:02:54.57 >> That sounds like a loaded 00:02:54.87\00:02:55.77 question. 00:02:55.77\00:02:56.64 I don't know where to begin, 00:02:56.64\00:02:58.27 but shall I say that I think it 00:02:58.27\00:03:00.61 was all about, you know, being 00:03:00.61\00:03:02.54 real or being transparent, 00:03:02.54\00:03:05.18 discovering your real self. 00:03:05.18\00:03:07.42 You know, today our world is 00:03:07.42\00:03:09.08 all about image management or 00:03:09.08\00:03:10.85 image driven and there's this 00:03:10.85\00:03:12.45 facade people put on, like 00:03:12.45\00:03:14.09 showcase, but I think that was 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.06 perhaps a very important area 00:03:16.06\00:03:18.03 of my life that I was seeking 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.79 to be vulnerable and I think 00:03:19.79\00:03:21.60 where I really came to a 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.17 crossroads was in a training 00:03:24.17\00:03:26.10 that I was taking, clinical 00:03:26.10\00:03:27.70 training, where my supervisor 00:03:27.70\00:03:30.51 drilled me where he told me 00:03:30.51\00:03:32.47 that in order to help people 00:03:32.47\00:03:34.74 with their real issues, you 00:03:34.74\00:03:36.21 have to be real yourself. 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.78 And during that first component 00:03:37.78\00:03:40.38 of the training, I wanted to 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.05 run away because I was facing 00:03:42.05\00:03:44.99 myself, I didn't wanna confront 00:03:44.99\00:03:47.36 what he was telling me, he was 00:03:47.36\00:03:48.59 saying, "Well, you know, your 00:03:48.59\00:03:49.46 parents have a background or 00:03:49.46\00:03:51.89 your grandparents have a 00:03:51.89\00:03:52.96 background, were alcoholics and 00:03:52.96\00:03:54.60 you may have those tendencies. 00:03:54.60\00:03:56.36 You may have a tendency to 00:03:56.36\00:03:57.77 spiritualize things away," and 00:03:57.77\00:04:00.37 it, that first semester was so 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.07 gruelling. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.20 After that it changed the 00:04:03.20\00:04:04.97 direction of my life and I 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.88 began to embrace who I was. 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.51 I never forget this saying, "We 00:04:08.51\00:04:10.51 cannot change what we refuse to 00:04:10.51\00:04:12.45 confront," and the first person 00:04:12.45\00:04:14.28 we need to be real with is 00:04:14.28\00:04:15.55 ourselves. 00:04:15.55\00:04:16.55 >> So let's talk about 00:04:17.22\00:04:17.82 forgiveness. 00:04:17.82\00:04:18.72 What place does forgiveness 00:04:18.72\00:04:21.22 play in freeing us from maybe 00:04:21.22\00:04:24.46 the imprisonment of our 00:04:24.46\00:04:25.96 emotions or certain thoughts? 00:04:25.96\00:04:28.56 >> Forgiveness is so powerful 00:04:28.56\00:04:30.47 as we can see in many stories 00:04:30.47\00:04:32.27 that we've heard where people 00:04:32.27\00:04:34.14 have forgiven those who've 00:04:34.14\00:04:35.74 committed atrocities, crimes, 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.31 Columbine shooting, the Amish 00:04:38.31\00:04:40.21 Incident, but forgiveness is so 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.51 powerful that it releases an 00:04:42.51\00:04:45.01 energy. 00:04:45.01\00:04:45.91 So when we don't forgive, it 00:04:45.91\00:04:47.72 actually bottles up bitterness 00:04:47.72\00:04:50.05 and resentment and actually can 00:04:50.05\00:04:52.12 be very toxic to us. 00:04:52.12\00:04:54.19 It can have both a 00:04:54.19\00:04:55.26 physiological and psychological 00:04:55.26\00:04:56.89 effect, in fact, when we choose 00:04:56.89\00:04:59.06 to forgive, it actually 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.53 releases certain brain 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.00 chemicals like endorphins 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.43 and dopamine that helps us to 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.27 feel better and actually 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.34 increases our level optimism. 00:05:08.34\00:05:12.27 And we'll talk about that later 00:05:12.27\00:05:13.74 on, but forgiveness sets us 00:05:13.74\00:05:15.51 free from, as you said, Mike, a 00:05:15.51\00:05:17.75 prison house. 00:05:17.75\00:05:18.81 >> Our freedom, I believe, to 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.18 God is one of the most 00:05:23.18\00:05:24.62 important gifts that He's given 00:05:24.62\00:05:26.29 to us, you know, He gives us 00:05:26.29\00:05:28.62 the right to choose whether we 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.73 choose to worship Him 00:05:30.73\00:05:32.29 or reject Him. 00:05:32.29\00:05:33.33 He gives us the right to 00:05:33.33\00:05:35.06 worship how we want to worship, 00:05:35.06\00:05:37.63 but more importantly, He's 00:05:37.63\00:05:38.83 given us parameters to live by. 00:05:38.83\00:05:41.00 So He doesn't just say, "Do 00:05:41.00\00:05:42.27 anything that you would like," 00:05:42.27\00:05:44.04 He gives us parameters and 00:05:44.04\00:05:45.17 they're made out of love. 00:05:45.17\00:05:47.28 >> It is important to Him that 00:05:47.28\00:05:49.01 we exercise our right to choose 00:05:49.01\00:05:54.18 and He does, however, recommend 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.52 that we choose Him and choose 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.85 Him because He is life. 00:05:58.85\00:06:01.29 And not just here in earth as 00:06:01.29\00:06:03.59 we are living our mortal lives, 00:06:03.59\00:06:06.43 but to live with Him in heaven, 00:06:06.43\00:06:08.30 eternally. 00:06:08.30\00:06:09.43 >> Dr. Daniel, how important is 00:06:11.57\00:06:14.14 exercise when it comes to 00:06:14.14\00:06:16.87 experiencing freedom in 00:06:16.87\00:06:18.21 our lives? 00:06:18.21\00:06:19.21 [DANIEL] Wow, that's a great 00:06:19.21\00:06:20.08 question. 00:06:20.08\00:06:21.08 Exercise is critical, exercise 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.71 is engaging our entire being. 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.75 So what that does is it 00:06:25.75\00:06:26.75 increases our circulation of 00:06:26.75\00:06:28.75 blood, blood transport oxygen 00:06:28.75\00:06:32.09 and transports nutrients as 00:06:32.09\00:06:33.82 well and especially to the 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.26 brain so that as we exercise 00:06:35.26\00:06:36.99 there's this micro circulation 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.93 taking place in our brain. 00:06:38.93\00:06:40.50 In fact, there was a book 00:06:40.50\00:06:41.80 written by Dr. John Ratey 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.50 called Spark: The New 00:06:44.50\00:06:46.30 Revolutionary Science on 00:06:46.30\00:06:47.80 Exercise and the Brain and he 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.90 talks about how exercise 00:06:49.90\00:06:51.51 actually decreases brain 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.78 erosion and that has to do 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.64 with, of course, slowing down 00:06:55.64\00:06:57.95 Alzheimer's and mental fog and 00:06:57.95\00:07:00.75 other neurological disorders. 00:07:00.75\00:07:03.62 And so exercise is so critical, 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.69 it's so important because we 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.02 feel good, it actually has a 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.69 way of blocking pain and it-- 00:07:08.69\00:07:12.26 by stimulating the brain to 00:07:12.26\00:07:13.90 release endorphins and other 00:07:13.90\00:07:17.03 neurotransmitters that actually 00:07:17.03\00:07:19.20 help with helping us to feel 00:07:19.20\00:07:20.80 better, it actually mimics the 00:07:20.80\00:07:23.57 effect of morphine and actually 00:07:23.57\00:07:25.51 it also has physiological 00:07:25.51\00:07:27.38 functions such as improved 00:07:27.38\00:07:28.78 respiration, which is 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.11 breathing, circulation, and, of 00:07:30.11\00:07:32.48 course, other metabolic 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.02 functions. 00:07:34.02\00:07:35.08 >> Exercise has so many 00:07:37.19\00:07:38.35 benefits across the board, but 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.12 specifically with freedom, we 00:07:40.12\00:07:42.26 found an amazing study of when 00:07:42.26\00:07:45.29 researchers put rats in a cage 00:07:45.29\00:07:47.23 with morphine and cocaine, they 00:07:47.23\00:07:49.33 became addicted and they 00:07:49.33\00:07:50.70 voluntarily chose to consume it. 00:07:50.70\00:07:53.23 However, when they put the rats 00:07:53.23\00:07:56.27 in a swimming facility and 00:07:56.27\00:07:59.64 cage-- running wheel that they 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.31 could run on, when they were 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.18 taken off, their cravings or 00:08:03.18\00:08:06.35 their reaction to go and take 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.18 the morphine and the cocaine 00:08:09.18\00:08:10.65 was lessened significantly which 00:08:10.65\00:08:13.79 shows how exercise can actually 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.22 bring freedom from various 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.26 addictions that we ourselves 00:08:18.26\00:08:19.83 may have. 00:08:19.83\00:08:20.83 >> Well, you know, exercise is 00:08:23.13\00:08:23.93 really important when it comes 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.43 to chronic diseases. 00:08:25.43\00:08:27.24 So many people, they feel like 00:08:27.24\00:08:28.27 they're chained by the diseases 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.17 that they struggle with, type 2 00:08:30.17\00:08:31.84 diabetes, heart disease, 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.88 arthritis, obesity, those types 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.38 of things and when it comes to 00:08:35.38\00:08:36.58 those things, exercise is 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.58 really, really critical and, in 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.02 fact, there's an individual who 00:08:40.02\00:08:41.65 said, a doctor who said that if 00:08:41.65\00:08:43.18 there was a pill that could do 00:08:43.18\00:08:45.22 all that exercise can do, has 00:08:45.22\00:08:47.59 all the benefits exercise, it 00:08:47.59\00:08:49.72 would be the most prescribed 00:08:49.72\00:08:50.96 pill in the history of mankind 00:08:50.96\00:08:52.83 and I really believe that. 00:08:52.83\00:08:54.30 But, of course, we don't need 00:08:54.30\00:08:55.86 to wait for a pill, we have 00:08:55.86\00:08:57.73 exercise. 00:08:57.73\00:08:58.60 And so for-- to get freedom 00:08:58.60\00:09:01.20 from chronic diseases and to 00:09:01.20\00:09:02.60 experience better health 00:09:02.60\00:09:04.04 overall, exercise is really, 00:09:04.04\00:09:06.07 really critical. 00:09:06.07\00:09:07.38 >> I used to get my students to 00:09:09.14\00:09:10.28 read that book, Spark... 00:09:10.28\00:09:11.58 >> Oh, yeah? 00:09:11.58\00:09:12.35 >> ...'cause it talked about 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.22 having students go for a run, 00:09:14.22\00:09:17.62 do a mile run before they would 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.36 go to school and their grades 00:09:20.36\00:09:22.36 were improving. 00:09:22.36\00:09:23.76 So exercise is really 00:09:23.76\00:09:24.73 important, nutrients that we 00:09:24.73\00:09:26.59 receive are very important and 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.76 we're going to get our friends, 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.87 Cathy and Arlete, and they're 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.53 gonna tell us about juicing and 00:09:32.53\00:09:34.60 how when you make your own 00:09:34.60\00:09:35.97 juices, it can flood your body 00:09:35.97\00:09:37.74 with really amazing nutrients 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.64 that help us to feel better, 00:09:40.64\00:09:42.54 help us to eliminate cravings 00:09:42.54\00:09:44.58 from our diet and free us from 00:09:44.58\00:09:47.42 certain addictions and other 00:09:47.42\00:09:49.35 health issues. 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.25 So let's take a look at Cathy 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.09 and Arlete right now. 00:09:52.09\00:09:53.36 >> Hello, my name is Cathy and 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.92 this is my sister-in-law... 00:09:55.92\00:09:57.76 >> Arlete Susana. 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.39 >> And today's topic is 00:09:59.39\00:10:01.13 freedom. 00:10:01.13\00:10:01.80 >> And what better way to have 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.06 freedom than to have good 00:10:03.06\00:10:05.07 health. 00:10:05.07\00:10:05.73 If you have good health, you 00:10:05.73\00:10:06.84 have the freedom move your body 00:10:06.84\00:10:08.97 and to be a blessing, to do 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.67 many activities, and it's just 00:10:10.67\00:10:12.67 a great guarantee to being free. 00:10:12.67\00:10:15.58 >> And actually, we have here a 00:10:15.58\00:10:16.98 basic juice recipe, we've got 00:10:16.98\00:10:19.15 here beets, beet greens, you 00:10:19.15\00:10:21.65 never throw those away, we have 00:10:21.65\00:10:23.42 a handful of spinach, carrots, 00:10:23.42\00:10:26.02 and a little bit of ginger. 00:10:26.02\00:10:29.29 >> So today what we're gonna do 00:10:29.29\00:10:30.86 with these vegetables is we're 00:10:30.86\00:10:31.99 gonna juice them and when you 00:10:31.99\00:10:33.70 juice your vegetables they're 00:10:33.70\00:10:35.13 very cleansing and they're very 00:10:35.13\00:10:36.60 blood-building and the 00:10:36.60\00:10:37.97 combination that we chose here, 00:10:37.97\00:10:40.00 beets and carrots and any of 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.50 these dark, leafy greens, are 00:10:41.50\00:10:43.20 just gonna be a great way to 00:10:43.20\00:10:44.84 boost your blood so it's like 00:10:44.84\00:10:46.64 giving your body, pretty much, 00:10:46.64\00:10:48.51 a blood transfusion of 00:10:48.51\00:10:49.88 nutrients which is amazing. 00:10:49.88\00:10:52.08 So we're gonna go ahead and 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.05 juice these vegetables and I'll 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.45 talk a little bit more about 00:10:56.45\00:10:57.99 the benefits. 00:10:57.99\00:10:59.02 >> Actually before we do that, 00:10:59.02\00:11:00.76 some people may ask, "Can I 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.22 just eat it, why do I have to 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.69 juice it?" 00:11:03.69\00:11:04.49 [ARLETE] Well, if you juice it, 00:11:04.49\00:11:05.36 that's a great question, if you 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.13 juice your vegetables, you're 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.03 gonna get a lot more volume, 00:11:08.03\00:11:09.56 you're gonna get a lot more 00:11:09.56\00:11:12.03 nutrition in one glass because 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.57 it takes a lot more veggies to 00:11:13.57\00:11:15.14 make a glass of juice than you 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.64 would. 00:11:16.64\00:11:17.31 You probably wouldn't sit and 00:11:17.31\00:11:18.71 eat this entire bowl of 00:11:18.71\00:11:19.71 vegetables in one sitting, but 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.24 you can very easily drink it in 00:11:21.24\00:11:22.84 a glass of juice and everyone 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.41 can enjoy a juice, even people 00:11:25.41\00:11:27.05 who are struggling with health 00:11:27.05\00:11:28.88 issues or things like that so 00:11:28.88\00:11:31.32 that's a great question. 00:11:31.32\00:11:32.29 We're gonna go ahead 00:11:32.29\00:11:33.15 and get started. 00:11:33.15\00:11:33.82 Cathy's going to start up our 00:11:33.82\00:11:35.66 Angel Juicer which is a 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.39 masticating juicer, triturating 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.19 juicer, it doesn't heat 00:11:39.19\00:11:40.43 anything up, it's slow and the 00:11:40.43\00:11:43.33 enzymes of the veggies will be 00:11:43.33\00:11:44.77 preserved which means that 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.74 they're gonna be retaining all 00:11:46.74\00:11:48.74 of the nutrition in them. 00:11:48.74\00:11:50.61 Are you ready? 00:11:50.61\00:11:51.24 >> I'm ready. 00:11:51.24\00:11:52.31 [juicer whirring] 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.34 >> Okay. 00:11:53.34\00:11:54.48 So... 00:11:54.98\00:11:55.58 Actually let me start with 00:11:55.58\00:11:56.64 the carrots. 00:11:56.64\00:11:57.91 [juicer whirring] 00:11:59.11\00:12:02.35 [ARLETE] Now we're gonna add 00:12:07.22\00:12:07.99 the beets. 00:12:07.99\00:12:08.99 And we're alternating between 00:12:10.29\00:12:11.49 the vegetables so that it's not 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.96 going to get-- especially when 00:12:13.96\00:12:15.10 you add the greens like right 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.33 now I'm gonna add the spinach. 00:12:16.33\00:12:17.97 You give it-- you alternate it 00:12:19.07\00:12:20.47 between the hard vegetables and 00:12:20.47\00:12:21.84 the softer, leafies just so 00:12:21.84\00:12:23.74 that it doesn't clog up 00:12:23.74\00:12:25.64 the machine. 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.11 So if take a look at the pulp 00:12:27.51\00:12:28.38 that's coming out of the Angel 00:12:28.38\00:12:29.84 here, it's very dry and it's 00:12:29.84\00:12:32.15 just beautiful, you know that 00:12:32.15\00:12:33.65 it's extracted all the juice 00:12:33.65\00:12:35.35 completely. 00:12:35.35\00:12:36.58 It actually feels like cotton. 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.12 There's no moisture left. 00:12:38.12\00:12:39.85 And a lot of people would ask, 00:12:39.85\00:12:41.02 "What can I do with the pulp?" 00:12:41.02\00:12:42.69 You could use it in soups and 00:12:42.69\00:12:44.36 stews and things like that or 00:12:44.36\00:12:46.06 you can add it to muffins or 00:12:46.06\00:12:48.56 plant-based burgers. 00:12:48.56\00:12:51.07 So let's take a look 00:12:51.07\00:12:51.90 at our juice. 00:12:51.90\00:12:52.77 >> Absolutely and I just happen 00:12:52.77\00:12:53.97 to have glasses here. 00:12:53.97\00:12:55.17 [ARLETE] Nice. 00:12:58.44\00:12:59.44 Look at the beautiful colour. 00:13:00.51\00:13:01.91 [CATHY] Isn't it beautiful? 00:13:01.91\00:13:02.71 [ARLETE] It is. 00:13:02.71\00:13:03.58 [CATHY] Nice. 00:13:05.55\00:13:06.58 Nice. 00:13:07.58\00:13:08.42 [ARLETE] Thank you. 00:13:08.42\00:13:09.18 That looks delicious. 00:13:09.18\00:13:10.62 Take a look at the colour, 00:13:10.62\00:13:11.49 it's nice and deep and red. 00:13:11.49\00:13:13.32 >> Looks like blood. 00:13:13.32\00:13:14.29 >> It does. 00:13:14.29\00:13:14.96 So you know it's blood 00:13:14.96\00:13:15.59 building. 00:13:15.59\00:13:16.19 >> Absolutely. 00:13:16.19\00:13:16.76 [ARLETE] Cheers! 00:13:16.76\00:13:17.43 [CATHY] Cheers! 00:13:17.43\00:13:18.13 [glasses clink] 00:13:18.13\00:13:18.96 [CATHY] Mmm. 00:13:20.26\00:13:21.23 This is good. 00:13:21.23\00:13:22.26 [ARLETE] It's delicious. 00:13:22.26\00:13:22.93 [CATHY] Mm-hmm. 00:13:22.93\00:13:23.80 >> Well, we hope that you 00:13:24.37\00:13:25.73 learned a little bit, something 00:13:25.73\00:13:26.94 about juicing and that you try 00:13:26.94\00:13:28.04 it at home as well so that you 00:13:28.04\00:13:29.20 can get the benefits 00:13:29.20\00:13:30.81 of it as well. 00:13:30.81\00:13:32.17 Cheers to your good health! 00:13:32.17\00:13:33.68 >> One of my favourite authors 00:13:35.04\00:13:37.85 and someone that I admire is 00:13:37.85\00:13:39.08 Dr. Viktor Frankl, you may have 00:13:39.08\00:13:41.42 heard of him. 00:13:41.42\00:13:42.45 He was a brilliant mind, he was 00:13:42.45\00:13:44.65 a neurologist, psychiatrist, 00:13:44.65\00:13:47.69 philosopher, teacher, 00:13:47.69\00:13:50.63 professor, and also a Holocaust 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.63 survivor and in his timeless 00:13:53.63\00:13:56.26 classic masterpiece entitled 00:13:56.26\00:13:59.10 Man's Search for Meaning, he 00:13:59.10\00:14:01.20 talks about freedom and the 00:14:01.20\00:14:03.27 will to live, in fact, he says 00:14:03.27\00:14:04.67 that, "Those who have a why to 00:14:04.67\00:14:07.44 live can bear with almost any 00:14:07.44\00:14:11.15 how." 00:14:11.15\00:14:12.25 That's a quote. 00:14:12.25\00:14:13.31 In other words, one of the 00:14:13.31\00:14:14.82 reasons, primary reasons why he 00:14:14.82\00:14:16.99 survived the Auschwitz 00:14:16.99\00:14:19.42 concentration camp was based on 00:14:19.42\00:14:21.19 his faith because he believed 00:14:21.19\00:14:23.12 that one day he would be free, 00:14:23.12\00:14:24.79 though many people were 00:14:24.79\00:14:26.13 physically imprisoned, in his 00:14:26.13\00:14:28.53 mind, he says, "That was 00:14:28.53\00:14:29.50 greatest prison," and I'm just 00:14:29.50\00:14:31.30 paraphrasing it, and he said 00:14:31.30\00:14:33.13 that it was his will to live to 00:14:33.13\00:14:35.20 realize that they may have 00:14:35.20\00:14:36.57 incarcerated him physically, 00:14:36.57\00:14:38.57 but they could not incarcerate 00:14:38.57\00:14:39.74 him or imprison him mentally 00:14:39.74\00:14:41.34 and emotionally and 00:14:41.34\00:14:42.44 psychologically. 00:14:42.44\00:14:43.58 It was so powerful and he 00:14:43.58\00:14:44.68 further quotes and he says, 00:14:44.68\00:14:46.05 "The greatest freedom we have 00:14:46.05\00:14:47.92 is the freedom to choose our 00:14:47.92\00:14:49.38 attitude." 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.79 And he was a believer so I do 00:14:50.79\00:14:52.59 believe that faith fuels, if 00:14:52.59\00:14:55.42 you-- if it-- as it were, our 00:14:55.42\00:14:57.26 freedom, it actually 00:14:57.26\00:14:59.09 strengthens it, fortifies our 00:14:59.09\00:15:00.73 freedom and I believe that 00:15:00.73\00:15:03.67 without that faith factor, then 00:15:03.67\00:15:05.70 we don't have that strong 00:15:05.70\00:15:08.30 capacity, that foundation that 00:15:08.30\00:15:10.74 actually builds the freedom, 00:15:10.74\00:15:13.24 the freedom to believe in 00:15:13.24\00:15:14.94 something that is beyond 00:15:14.94\00:15:16.24 ourselves. 00:15:16.24\00:15:17.25 >> So, Dr. Saugh, for me the 00:15:17.68\00:15:20.18 opposite of freedom is being in 00:15:20.18\00:15:22.52 bondage and usually when we're 00:15:22.52\00:15:25.02 in bondage, we experience fear. 00:15:25.02\00:15:28.36 So how can we practically move 00:15:28.36\00:15:31.89 from fear to faith? 00:15:31.89\00:15:34.46 >> We have to replace, 00:15:35.16\00:15:36.93 I believe, faith-- fear with 00:15:36.93\00:15:40.07 faith. 00:15:40.07\00:15:41.10 Fear and faith cannot coexist, 00:15:41.10\00:15:43.34 they cannot occupy the same 00:15:43.34\00:15:45.31 place or space. 00:15:45.31\00:15:46.81 One is going to triumph or 00:15:46.81\00:15:49.08 surpass over the other so we 00:15:49.08\00:15:51.58 have to exercise faith. 00:15:51.58\00:15:53.21 Now, how do we do that? 00:15:53.21\00:15:54.52 Well, we have to simply 00:15:54.52\00:15:56.08 believe in God's word. 00:15:56.08\00:15:57.55 There's a wonderful text in 00:15:57.55\00:15:58.75 scripture that says in 00:15:58.75\00:16:00.62 2 Timothy 1, verse 7 that God 00:16:00.62\00:16:02.82 has not given us the spirit of 00:16:02.82\00:16:04.33 fear, but of power and of love 00:16:04.33\00:16:06.63 and of a sound mind. 00:16:06.63\00:16:08.43 And another scriptural 00:16:08.43\00:16:09.33 prescription is found in 00:16:09.33\00:16:10.67 Galatians 5, verse 1, it says, 00:16:10.67\00:16:12.90 "Stand fast and in liberty for 00:16:12.90\00:16:14.70 with Christ has given to us," 00:16:14.70\00:16:16.27 I'm just paraphrasing. 00:16:16.27\00:16:17.44 So we need to claim it, we need 00:16:17.44\00:16:19.44 to embrace it and so it's not 00:16:19.44\00:16:21.71 something that it's a mere 00:16:21.71\00:16:23.18 mental ascent, it's something 00:16:23.18\00:16:24.65 that requires action. 00:16:24.65\00:16:26.85 And so when we exercise faith, 00:16:26.85\00:16:29.35 when we believe in God that is 00:16:29.35\00:16:32.29 beyond ourselves, our human 00:16:32.29\00:16:33.89 limitations, we're relying on a 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.06 power that's greater and beyond 00:16:36.06\00:16:37.63 us and then we can cultivate 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.29 that faith and then faith 00:16:39.29\00:16:40.80 actually automatically replaces 00:16:40.80\00:16:42.73 that fear. 00:16:42.73\00:16:43.60 There is this acronym about fear 00:16:43.60\00:16:45.47 and it goes like this: False 00:16:45.47\00:16:46.97 Evidence Appearing Real. 00:16:46.97\00:16:49.90 So, again, faith overcomes 00:16:49.90\00:16:52.47 fear. 00:16:52.47\00:16:53.31 >> How important are your 00:16:54.44\00:16:55.58 thoughts, you're talking a lot 00:16:55.58\00:16:56.78 about thoughts, to freedom? 00:16:56.78\00:16:59.15 >> What type of thoughts we 00:17:00.22\00:17:03.25 engage in, entertain, generate, 00:17:03.25\00:17:05.52 actually informs our behaviours 00:17:05.52\00:17:07.46 and our actions. 00:17:07.46\00:17:08.89 So I really believe that it is 00:17:08.89\00:17:10.66 important for us to cultivate 00:17:10.66\00:17:12.59 healthy, positive thinking. 00:17:12.59\00:17:14.73 You see, when there is negative 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.23 thinking, when there's 00:17:16.23\00:17:17.60 distorted thinking, it can lead 00:17:17.60\00:17:19.53 to all sorts of adverse 00:17:19.53\00:17:21.27 conditions and disorders and 00:17:21.27\00:17:23.20 that's why today, in today's 00:17:23.20\00:17:24.61 world, there is a plethora of 00:17:24.61\00:17:26.91 mental health issues and 00:17:26.91\00:17:30.01 there's a great need for 00:17:30.01\00:17:31.78 intervention and counselling 00:17:31.78\00:17:33.35 and therapy. 00:17:33.35\00:17:34.78 So it begins with ourselves, 00:17:34.78\00:17:36.65 individually, looking at 00:17:36.65\00:17:37.82 ourselves and saying, you know, 00:17:37.82\00:17:39.55 "Who am I?" those fundamental 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.39 questions, "Why am I here?" 00:17:41.39\00:17:44.53 So essentially, the type of 00:17:44.53\00:17:46.13 thoughts I choose to think, 00:17:46.13\00:17:49.10 entertain, that begins to shape 00:17:49.10\00:17:51.47 not only my thinking patterns, 00:17:51.47\00:17:53.40 but then it subsequently 00:17:53.40\00:17:55.10 translates into my behaviours 00:17:55.10\00:17:56.74 and actions and then it 00:17:56.74\00:17:58.94 constructs who I am, my 00:17:58.94\00:18:00.18 character. 00:18:00.18\00:18:01.18 Many people come with what we 00:18:01.18\00:18:02.58 call "cognitive distortions" 00:18:02.58\00:18:04.61 and they begin to see things 00:18:04.61\00:18:06.58 through a certain lens that is 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.42 skewed and that's the reason 00:18:08.42\00:18:09.82 why we need to think in an 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.55 objective way, in a way that 00:18:11.55\00:18:14.46 is, you know, when we look at 00:18:14.46\00:18:15.66 the glass we often say, some 00:18:15.66\00:18:16.79 people say it's half full or is 00:18:16.79\00:18:18.36 it half empty? 00:18:18.36\00:18:19.43 Again, it's based on one's 00:18:19.43\00:18:20.96 perspective and one's 00:18:20.96\00:18:22.36 perspective is based on their 00:18:22.36\00:18:23.67 perception and their perception 00:18:23.67\00:18:25.07 becomes their reality. 00:18:25.07\00:18:26.60 So we have to ask ourselves, is 00:18:26.60\00:18:27.77 my perception true, is it 00:18:27.77\00:18:31.14 accurate, is it objective or 00:18:31.14\00:18:33.94 has it been-- is it subjective, 00:18:33.94\00:18:35.88 is it skewed by the way I've 00:18:35.88\00:18:37.88 been conditioned in thinking or 00:18:37.88\00:18:40.28 the way I've been socialized in 00:18:40.28\00:18:41.62 thinking, or is it based on 00:18:41.62\00:18:44.39 subscribing to social norms of 00:18:44.39\00:18:47.22 society that's impacting the 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.76 way I think? 00:18:49.76\00:18:51.09 So thinking is such a very 00:18:51.09\00:18:54.56 important process. 00:18:54.56\00:18:55.26 We actually have to pause to 00:18:55.26\00:18:56.97 think, some people just run and 00:18:56.97\00:18:59.57 they think on the fly, but 00:18:59.57\00:19:00.94 thinking is an intentional, 00:19:00.94\00:19:04.61 engaging process. 00:19:04.61\00:19:06.41 Thoughts are so potent and what 00:19:07.01\00:19:09.98 we conceive is important as 00:19:09.98\00:19:12.55 much as how we translate that 00:19:12.55\00:19:14.65 into words. 00:19:14.65\00:19:16.22 There is a text in scripture, 00:19:16.22\00:19:17.69 James chapter 3, verses 3, 4, 00:19:17.69\00:19:20.52 and 5 that mentions that the 00:19:20.52\00:19:21.82 tongue is like a rudder and so 00:19:21.82\00:19:24.19 words are actually fuelled or 00:19:24.19\00:19:25.66 generated by the thoughts 00:19:25.66\00:19:27.03 we think. 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.03 So what we think gets 00:19:28.03\00:19:29.10 translated into our words, but 00:19:29.10\00:19:30.70 also what we think and what we 00:19:30.70\00:19:33.00 say connects that thought and 00:19:33.00\00:19:35.00 actually that thought can 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.20 become a reality. 00:19:36.20\00:19:37.91 Now, if we entertain negative 00:19:37.91\00:19:41.18 thoughts, if we dwell on 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.58 negative thoughts or my 00:19:43.58\00:19:45.31 negative thoughts then that can 00:19:45.31\00:19:46.68 affect us emotionally, 00:19:46.68\00:19:49.08 psychologically, and also 00:19:49.08\00:19:50.95 physiologically. 00:19:50.95\00:19:52.22 There was a great researcher, 00:19:52.22\00:19:53.42 Dr. Norman Cousins, may have 00:19:53.42\00:19:54.79 heard of him, from Harvard 00:19:54.79\00:19:56.09 University. 00:19:56.09\00:19:57.13 In fact, he studied the 00:19:57.13\00:20:00.56 importance of the way we think 00:20:00.56\00:20:02.80 and he referenced this 00:20:02.80\00:20:04.57 wonderful scripture found in 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.07 Proverbs 17, verse 22, "A merry 00:20:06.07\00:20:08.37 heart or a glad countenance, a 00:20:08.37\00:20:11.01 mind, positive mind doeth good 00:20:11.01\00:20:13.24 like medicine, but a broken 00:20:13.24\00:20:15.01 spirit dries the bones." 00:20:15.01\00:20:17.48 And so I grew up listening to 00:20:17.48\00:20:18.68 that text and I could not 00:20:18.68\00:20:20.28 understand it for the life of 00:20:20.28\00:20:21.52 me until I got the science to 00:20:21.52\00:20:23.92 substantiate it. 00:20:23.92\00:20:25.19 All along the scriptures was 00:20:25.19\00:20:27.12 right on point, it was spot on 00:20:27.12\00:20:29.62 and in his research, he simply 00:20:29.62\00:20:32.26 concluded, I'm just gonna share 00:20:32.26\00:20:33.56 the highlights, is that a merry 00:20:33.56\00:20:34.96 heart, a positive person, a 00:20:34.96\00:20:36.03 positive person who thinks 00:20:36.03\00:20:38.37 positively or generates 00:20:38.37\00:20:39.70 positivity actually, the 00:20:39.70\00:20:42.90 science shows that it releases 00:20:42.90\00:20:44.87 these special brain 00:20:44.87\00:20:46.71 neurotransmitters like, we talk 00:20:46.71\00:20:49.21 about endorphins and there's 00:20:49.21\00:20:51.95 dopamine and they actually 00:20:51.95\00:20:53.55 increase one's feeling of 00:20:53.55\00:20:55.48 wellness and happiness, there's 00:20:55.48\00:20:57.52 even oxytocin, there's all 00:20:57.52\00:20:59.42 these different hormones. 00:20:59.42\00:21:00.96 But he says a broken spirit or 00:21:00.96\00:21:02.92 a bitter, and we talked about 00:21:02.92\00:21:04.83 forgiveness earlier in this 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.59 episode, actually dries 00:21:06.59\00:21:08.46 the bone. 00:21:08.46\00:21:09.13 What it does is it is in the-- 00:21:09.13\00:21:11.70 blood is produced in the bone 00:21:11.70\00:21:12.97 marrow, the RBC's, not the bank 00:21:12.97\00:21:15.00 RBC, but the red blood cells 00:21:15.00\00:21:17.54 and, well, of course, it's even 00:21:17.54\00:21:19.44 much more, it can be much more 00:21:19.44\00:21:20.84 richer, but what happens is 00:21:20.84\00:21:22.51 when we worry, when we have a 00:21:22.51\00:21:24.88 bitter spirit, when we maintain 00:21:24.88\00:21:28.42 a unforgiving spirit, it 00:21:28.42\00:21:30.12 actually decreases the 00:21:30.12\00:21:32.19 production of these RBC's and 00:21:32.19\00:21:33.92 it can actually demineralize 00:21:33.92\00:21:36.26 the bones. 00:21:36.26\00:21:37.36 So it is so important to 00:21:38.39\00:21:41.13 cultivate healthy, positive 00:21:41.13\00:21:43.67 thinking and as we reflect upon 00:21:43.67\00:21:45.73 God's grace and goodness, I 00:21:45.73\00:21:47.67 believe that can strongly 00:21:47.67\00:21:49.40 influence the way we think. 00:21:49.40\00:21:51.04 >> All of us have a place where 00:21:53.74\00:21:55.84 we're very comfortable. 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.38 For me, my happy place 00:21:57.38\00:21:58.61 is my bicycle. 00:21:58.61\00:21:59.71 I stated cycling when I was 00:21:59.71\00:22:00.82 probably 5 years old and it's 00:22:00.82\00:22:02.62 been a whole part of my life 00:22:02.62\00:22:04.29 growing up and even as an 00:22:04.29\00:22:05.45 adult, now 63 and I'm, you 00:22:05.45\00:22:07.09 know, still riding my bike, and 00:22:07.09\00:22:08.86 for me it's my meditative 00:22:08.86\00:22:09.89 place, it's a place where the 00:22:09.89\00:22:12.16 noises and all the distractions 00:22:12.16\00:22:15.10 don't exist. 00:22:15.10\00:22:16.10 I'm just there pedaling, turning 00:22:16.10\00:22:17.50 away, and I find that God can 00:22:17.50\00:22:19.57 just get through to me in ways 00:22:19.57\00:22:21.97 that in day-to-day life He 00:22:21.97\00:22:23.77 can't get through to me. 00:22:23.77\00:22:24.94 And so really of the three 00:22:25.37\00:22:26.34 times that I can really know 00:22:26.34\00:22:27.91 when God spoke to me clear in 00:22:27.91\00:22:29.08 my life, two of them were on my 00:22:29.08\00:22:30.35 bicycle or associated with my 00:22:30.35\00:22:31.71 bicycling. 00:22:31.71\00:22:32.48 So, to me, it's a really 00:22:32.48\00:22:34.88 special place for me where I 00:22:34.88\00:22:35.78 can communicate with God and 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.39 just be at peace. 00:22:37.39\00:22:38.92 [DANIEL] When I was a child, 00:22:40.59\00:22:41.82 which was just a few years ago, 00:22:41.82\00:22:44.49 I remember not being the most 00:22:44.49\00:22:46.80 popular one, I was the last to 00:22:46.80\00:22:49.26 be selected on the team, last 00:22:49.26\00:22:50.77 to be picked and mostly picked 00:22:50.77\00:22:52.77 on and I think I overcame that 00:22:52.77\00:22:56.74 over the years, but what it was 00:22:56.74\00:22:59.34 for me then was I had this 00:22:59.34\00:23:02.21 negative feeling, not just 00:23:02.21\00:23:04.71 feeling, but thought of myself 00:23:04.71\00:23:06.38 that I was not good enough, 00:23:06.38\00:23:07.85 that I couldn't make the cut, 00:23:07.85\00:23:10.02 that, you know, I couldn't be 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.62 like the others who were maybe 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.29 high achievers or popular and so 00:23:13.29\00:23:16.86 years passed and I carried this 00:23:16.86\00:23:19.06 thought with me and I would get 00:23:19.06\00:23:21.76 positive reinforcement from 00:23:21.76\00:23:23.06 home, from my mother and father 00:23:23.06\00:23:24.57 and my aunt who was like my 00:23:24.57\00:23:26.53 second mother and especially 00:23:26.53\00:23:29.44 people from church, I had many 00:23:29.44\00:23:32.07 spiritual mothers and fathers 00:23:32.07\00:23:34.34 and that helped to cultivate a 00:23:34.34\00:23:36.58 positive, healthy self-esteem, 00:23:36.58\00:23:40.35 self-worth, and self-image in 00:23:40.35\00:23:42.95 spite of the fact of what my 00:23:42.95\00:23:44.89 friends were telling me or 00:23:44.89\00:23:45.89 calling me, despite what 00:23:45.89\00:23:47.39 society was projecting against 00:23:47.39\00:23:48.79 me, having a healthy 00:23:48.79\00:23:51.46 self-esteem, self-image, 00:23:51.46\00:23:52.76 self-worth, made a big 00:23:52.76\00:23:54.03 difference so that I could 00:23:54.03\00:23:55.60 overcome the negative thoughts 00:23:55.60\00:23:58.30 that were brewing in my mind 00:23:58.30\00:24:01.44 and making me feel that I was 00:24:01.44\00:24:02.57 not good enough. 00:24:02.57\00:24:03.64 When I came around the age of 00:24:03.64\00:24:05.57 12 and I got baptized and I 00:24:05.57\00:24:08.31 began to take my cue, not from 00:24:08.31\00:24:11.25 the world, but from God, 00:24:11.25\00:24:13.31 hearing the truth about myself 00:24:13.31\00:24:16.58 because I found that I was 00:24:16.58\00:24:18.79 telling myself a lie, I was 00:24:18.79\00:24:21.02 believing a lie about myself 00:24:21.02\00:24:22.96 until I knew that God loved me 00:24:22.96\00:24:24.86 unconditionally and so I 00:24:24.86\00:24:27.20 embraced that and believed that 00:24:27.20\00:24:28.63 ever since then, that's changed 00:24:28.63\00:24:30.87 the trajectory and the pathway 00:24:30.87\00:24:33.57 of my life. 00:24:33.57\00:24:34.74 I believe when I look at the 00:24:34.74\00:24:35.97 cross, I see Jesus securing and 00:24:35.97\00:24:41.04 procuring not only my freedom, 00:24:41.04\00:24:42.78 but the freedom for the entire 00:24:42.78\00:24:44.45 world and I believe that 00:24:44.45\00:24:45.98 freedom is the right of every 00:24:45.98\00:24:48.38 sentient being and it's a 00:24:48.38\00:24:51.02 God-given right, it's a human 00:24:51.02\00:24:52.79 right and I love the text in 00:24:52.79\00:24:55.32 John chapter 8, verse 32, "And 00:24:55.32\00:24:56.86 you shall know the truth and 00:24:56.86\00:24:58.73 the truth shall set you free," 00:24:58.73\00:25:00.30 and when I discovered the truth 00:25:00.30\00:25:01.16 about myself, but when I 00:25:01.16\00:25:02.63 discovered the truth about who 00:25:02.63\00:25:03.87 God was and is in my life, that 00:25:03.87\00:25:07.00 was truth that liberated me and 00:25:07.00\00:25:09.44 set me free on a path of 00:25:09.44\00:25:12.51 freedom and unlimited success 00:25:12.51\00:25:16.38 in Him. 00:25:16.38\00:25:17.58 >> That is so different from 00:25:17.58\00:25:19.71 many people's view of God. 00:25:19.71\00:25:21.18 They think He's all powerful so 00:25:21.18\00:25:22.95 therefor He's all controlling, 00:25:22.95\00:25:25.12 but you're say no, He's not all 00:25:25.12\00:25:26.69 controlling, He's actually 00:25:26.69\00:25:28.32
