00:03:37.21\00:03:38.21 >> Yes, I was born and I grew 00:03:39.45\00:03:41.65 up in a group of islands called 00:03:41.65\00:03:43.55 the Azores, which is about 800 00:03:43.55\00:03:45.85 miles before Europe, in the 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.52 middle of the Atlantic. 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.12 I was there till I was 00:03:49.12\00:03:50.23 11 years old. 00:03:50.23\00:03:51.39 It was a very poor place 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.09 at the time. 00:03:53.09\00:03:54.10 I remember it was in the '50's 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.80 that I grew up there, I was 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.47 born in '46, came to Canada 00:03:57.47\00:04:00.27 when I was 11, and I remember 00:04:00.27\00:04:03.54 it being very primitive. 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.54 We had no shoes, we cooked with 00:04:06.54\00:04:09.04 wood and I remember my mother 00:04:09.04\00:04:12.78 would really work hard because 00:04:12.78\00:04:15.25 she would have to go and gather 00:04:15.25\00:04:17.29 the wood in forests that she 00:04:17.29\00:04:19.19 was allowed to go and scavenge 00:04:19.19\00:04:21.69 as well as they had done some 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.03 lumber projects where they cut 00:04:24.03\00:04:26.96 lumber down and she was allowed 00:04:26.96\00:04:29.00 to go and dig stumps. 00:04:29.00\00:04:31.70 So we would have to carry that 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.07 home, cut it up so we could 00:04:33.07\00:04:35.74 have fire to cook our meals. 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.91 The corn would have to be 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.54 ground, but my mother would 00:04:40.54\00:04:42.18 have to walk to another town 00:04:42.18\00:04:44.38 where there was a windmill and 00:04:44.38\00:04:45.88 take 5 hours, walk through the 00:04:45.88\00:04:47.48 mountains when she got there, 00:04:47.48\00:04:48.98 if it was too calm, there was 00:04:48.98\00:04:52.09 no wind, she would have to come 00:04:52.09\00:04:53.76 back and go back the next day. 00:04:53.76\00:04:55.99 That's how backward, that's how 00:04:56.66\00:04:58.56 primitive it was. 00:04:58.56\00:05:00.23 We had no radio, no newspapers, 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.76 nothing. 00:05:02.76\00:05:03.77 We never heard any foreign 00:05:03.77\00:05:04.97 language, absolutely no phones, 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.64 nothing. 00:05:07.64\00:05:08.44 So that was difficult for my 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.27 parents and as a child, for me 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.81 it was fine. 00:05:12.81\00:05:13.68 We had two lakes there, we had 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.34 a lot of fun playing in the 00:05:15.34\00:05:17.55 water, although I didn't learn 00:05:17.55\00:05:19.08 to swim till I got here, but it 00:05:19.08\00:05:20.82 was fun, we played in the 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.15 forest and, you know, I'd lay 00:05:22.15\00:05:23.59 down, look at the clouds. 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.29 I was an only child. 00:05:25.29\00:05:26.49 My parents really treated me, 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.49 like my father would say, like 00:05:28.49\00:05:29.96 baby Jesus. 00:05:29.96\00:05:30.96 [laughs] 00:05:30.96\00:05:33.16 Yeah. 00:05:33.16\00:05:34.23 [MIKE] So then, Mario, you 00:05:34.23\00:05:35.90 ended up coming to Canada, your 00:05:35.90\00:05:38.67 whole family came to Canada and 00:05:38.67\00:05:40.24 you were quite young. 00:05:40.24\00:05:41.47 How did that change your life? 00:05:41.47\00:05:43.94 [MARIO] Well, I've never given 00:05:43.94\00:05:45.24 much thought. 00:05:45.24\00:05:46.27 At the time I was young, I went 00:05:46.27\00:05:48.81 to school here, and it was a 00:05:48.81\00:05:52.15 little bit difficult, I got 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.78 blamed for everything 'cause I 00:05:53.78\00:05:55.05 couldn't speak English, but-- 00:05:55.05\00:05:58.52 and I got in trouble a lot, but 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.36 I was quite creative even 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.36 back then. 00:06:02.36\00:06:03.22 I got let go from school. 00:06:03.22\00:06:06.09 I didn't do anything, actually, 00:06:06.09\00:06:08.10 but I was part of a group of 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.03 people that had done something, 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.40 I was just standing there and 00:06:11.40\00:06:12.70 didn't know what I was doing, I 00:06:12.70\00:06:14.47 did nothing, got sent home, had 00:06:14.47\00:06:17.04 to bring my mother, my mother 00:06:17.04\00:06:18.64 was working and we had someone 00:06:18.64\00:06:20.48 who'd just come from the old 00:06:20.48\00:06:21.71 country, absolutely no English, 00:06:21.71\00:06:23.31 I took her to school and say, 00:06:23.31\00:06:24.28 "Here's my mother." [laughs] 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.92 So she didn't understand a word 00:06:26.92\00:06:28.88 they said, I went back 00:06:28.88\00:06:30.15 to school. 00:06:30.15\00:06:31.15 >> How did you get into the 00:06:31.15\00:06:33.15 house-building business? 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.26 And how did your success come 00:06:35.26\00:06:37.43 in that field? 00:06:37.43\00:06:38.66 [MARIO] Well, I was very naive 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.20 and I believed whatever people 00:06:41.20\00:06:42.93 said so at one time I was-- I 00:06:42.93\00:06:44.80 quit school, actually, I almost 00:06:44.80\00:06:46.40 became a chemist, I went two 00:06:46.40\00:06:47.94 and a half years to university 00:06:47.94\00:06:49.30 to become a chemist. 00:06:49.30\00:06:50.37 I quit and I was-- I went to 00:06:50.37\00:06:52.01 the public library and there 00:06:52.01\00:06:53.17 was a book there that said, 00:06:53.17\00:06:54.21 "How To Make A Million Dollars 00:06:54.21\00:06:55.58 in Real Estate," I thought, 00:06:55.58\00:06:56.58 "Wow, somebody can tell me how 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.05 to make a million dollars?" 00:06:58.05\00:06:59.68 [laughs] 00:06:59.68\00:07:00.65 So I borrowed the book, 00:07:00.65\00:07:02.52 actually, I never did return 00:07:02.52\00:07:03.69 it, but I didn't practice 00:07:03.69\00:07:04.85 anything they said. 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.49 I told my mechanic about this 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.49 book that I was reading, he 00:07:09.49\00:07:10.59 said, "Oh, go see a friend of 00:07:10.59\00:07:11.66 mine, Bruno. 00:07:11.66\00:07:12.66 He's is in real estate." 00:07:12.66\00:07:14.10 So I became a realtor. 00:07:14.10\00:07:16.30 After being a realtor for a few 00:07:16.30\00:07:18.07 months, I saw some realty 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.97 people selling new homes and I 00:07:20.97\00:07:23.97 saw that they sold quickly and 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.44 I thought, "I'd like to get 00:07:25.44\00:07:26.78 into that business." 00:07:26.78\00:07:28.08 I didn't have any money, I 00:07:28.08\00:07:29.58 borrowed $20,000 at the time, I 00:07:29.58\00:07:31.31 told everybody, "I'm gonna go 00:07:31.31\00:07:32.51 into the house-building 00:07:32.51\00:07:33.55 business." 00:07:33.55\00:07:34.45 Before you knew it, I had 13 00:07:34.45\00:07:35.62 partners at $20,000 apiece, 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.89 which would be equal to about 00:07:37.89\00:07:39.02 $200,000 each today. 00:07:39.02\00:07:41.09 And that's how I got started. 00:07:41.09\00:07:43.02 >> So you were quite an 00:07:43.79\00:07:44.96 entrepreneur, I mean, the house 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.39 that we're filming at right now 00:07:46.39\00:07:48.26 is your house, this whole 00:07:48.26\00:07:49.46 neighbourhood, you know, you've 00:07:49.46\00:07:50.90 been very active in building, 00:07:50.90\00:07:52.60 you know, 65% of the homes in 00:07:52.60\00:07:54.17 this area. 00:07:54.17\00:07:55.17 You had an entrepreneurial 00:07:56.57\00:07:57.64 skill, how how young were you 00:07:57.64\00:07:59.54 when you started? 00:07:59.54\00:08:00.71 [MARIO] I was 27. 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.61 [MIKE] Twenty-seven. 00:08:02.61\00:08:03.51 [MARIO] This was really my-- 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.21 after quitting school, I became 00:08:05.21\00:08:06.61 a taxi driver. 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.02 Within a year and a half I had 00:08:08.02\00:08:09.45 two taxis that I owned, but I 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.22 didn't really like the 00:08:11.22\00:08:12.35 business, everything, my 00:08:12.35\00:08:13.46 language, everything was going 00:08:13.46\00:08:14.46 downhill so I sold and then got 00:08:14.46\00:08:16.52 into real estate at the 00:08:16.52\00:08:17.76 age of 27. 00:08:17.76\00:08:19.16 I used to think that if I made 00:08:19.16\00:08:21.36 a million dollars I'd be happy 00:08:21.36\00:08:22.83 because I was a very unhappy 00:08:22.83\00:08:23.93 person, and in my early 00:08:23.93\00:08:26.57 thirties I achieved that. 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.97 That was a long time ago, 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.14 that'd be like five or ten 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.44 million today, right? 00:08:31.44\00:08:32.71 So-- but I was still very 00:08:33.61\00:08:35.31 unhappy. 00:08:35.31\00:08:36.14 As a matter of fact, by the 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.51 time I made my first million, I 00:08:37.51\00:08:40.05 was actually upset because I 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.02 was wrong, that it would not 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.15 make me happy. 00:08:44.15\00:08:45.39 So...yeah. 00:08:46.12\00:08:48.12 >> What did bring happiness 00:08:48.12\00:08:49.66 to you? 00:08:49.66\00:08:50.63 [MARIO] I think I did very well 00:08:51.63\00:08:54.86 for a number of years and then 00:08:54.86\00:08:59.57 in my late forties, the economy 00:08:59.57\00:09:02.00 turned in my business, I also 00:09:02.00\00:09:05.04 went through a really rough 00:09:05.04\00:09:06.57 time personally... 00:09:06.57\00:09:08.18 and... 00:09:09.38\00:09:10.58 I was 50 years old, 00:09:11.88\00:09:14.72 I was running a business that 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.22 that was two million dollars 00:09:16.22\00:09:17.55 in the hole, that'd be like 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.52 eight or ten million dollars 00:09:20.52\00:09:21.66 today. 00:09:21.66\00:09:22.66 I had borrowed everything that 00:09:23.43\00:09:24.69 my parents had, as a matter of 00:09:24.69\00:09:27.50 fact, the Ontario New Home 00:09:27.50\00:09:29.73 Warranty Program, it was called 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.40 at the time, wanted to revoke 00:09:31.40\00:09:32.63 my license. 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.24 They asked me if I had any 00:09:34.24\00:09:35.64 other assets, so my parents 00:09:35.64\00:09:36.77 actually signed their house as 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.64 a guarantee for me to continue. 00:09:38.64\00:09:40.54 I could not fail, my parents 00:09:41.38\00:09:43.65 would die, I was an only child, 00:09:43.65\00:09:45.85 they trusted me, they believed 00:09:45.85\00:09:47.58 in me, they loved me and they 00:09:47.58\00:09:50.42 never knew to what extent of 00:09:50.42\00:09:52.35 the struggle I was going 00:09:52.35\00:09:53.69 through, I protected them 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.12 from that, but... 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.96 I always-- I had done it 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.59 before and I believed I could 00:09:59.59\00:10:01.06 do it again. 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.06 So I never got discouraged, but 00:10:02.06\00:10:04.20 it was just very, very 00:10:04.20\00:10:05.53 difficult running a business 00:10:05.53\00:10:07.40 like that, again, alone by 00:10:07.40\00:10:11.17 myself. 00:10:11.17\00:10:12.41 My first wife had committed 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.24 suicide, she was-- suffered 00:10:14.24\00:10:16.38 from depression, the second 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.68 one was a big mistake, I rushed 00:10:17.68\00:10:20.02 into it too quickly, it was 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.08 really, really bad. 00:10:22.08\00:10:23.99 So...but at the age of 50, 00:10:23.99\00:10:28.72 as I was in deepest despair at 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.69 the time. 00:10:30.69\00:10:32.29 So three people actually told 00:10:32.29\00:10:34.30 me to go to this church in 00:10:34.30\00:10:35.83 Toronto. 00:10:35.83\00:10:36.63 I had been raised in the church, 00:10:36.63\00:10:38.20 I was an altar boy and all that, 00:10:38.20\00:10:39.33 but I didn't know anything 00:10:39.33\00:10:40.47 about God. 00:10:40.47\00:10:41.47 I believe there was a God. 00:10:41.47\00:10:43.07 As a matter of fact, when I was 00:10:43.07\00:10:44.14 a very young child, I'd look 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.44 where they would keep the 00:10:45.44\00:10:46.44 [unintelligible], this little, 00:10:46.44\00:10:47.94 I forget what it's called now, 00:10:47.94\00:10:49.34 and I thought, "Wow, God lives 00:10:49.34\00:10:50.88 there." [laughs] 00:10:50.88\00:10:53.08 That's all I-- but I did believe 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.85 there was a God, I didn't wanna 00:10:54.85\00:10:56.05 have anything to do with Him 00:10:56.05\00:10:57.25 because I liked my habits that I 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.22 knew they were wrong, but... 00:11:00.22\00:11:03.06 So three people actually told me 00:11:03.06\00:11:04.49 to go to this church in Toronto 00:11:04.49\00:11:06.43 at that time, it's when I was 50 00:11:06.43\00:11:08.00 years old, and I went and I 00:11:08.00\00:11:11.87 still remember the very first 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.37 day was on a Sunday night and 00:11:13.37\00:11:17.27 there was a lot of people there 00:11:17.27\00:11:18.71 on a Sunday night. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.88 And they asked anybody that's 00:11:20.88\00:11:22.98 suffering from depression, put 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.61 their hand up so I put my hand 00:11:24.61\00:11:26.08 up and we prayed for the people 00:11:26.08\00:11:27.85 had their hands up. 00:11:27.85\00:11:28.95 They asked, "Anybody want to 00:11:28.95\00:11:30.02 give their life to the Lord to 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.22 come to the front," I was there 00:11:31.22\00:11:32.62 with someone, they said, "Why 00:11:32.62\00:11:33.66 don't you go?" so I went. 00:11:33.66\00:11:34.49 I had no clue what that meant. 00:11:34.49\00:11:36.32 Zero. 00:11:36.32\00:11:37.56 So they prayed this little 00:11:37.56\00:11:38.79 prayer, they asked me to repeat 00:11:38.79\00:11:40.40 it, I did, they took me 00:11:40.40\00:11:41.80 to the back. 00:11:41.80\00:11:43.50 I still remember the fellow's-- 00:11:43.50\00:11:44.73 I have a very poor memory about 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.07 most things, but I still remembe 00:11:46.07\00:11:47.54 his name was Grant, and he 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.80 explained to me why Jesus died 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.67 on the cross, to bridge the gap 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.48 between man and God and He gave 00:11:53.48\00:11:54.98 me this tiny little book of 00:11:54.98\00:11:56.51 three pages, an inch square and 00:11:56.51\00:12:00.55 all that it had was a man on 00:12:00.55\00:12:02.75 one side and a valley, there 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.19 was a cross on the other side, 00:12:04.19\00:12:05.65 which was also flat, was God 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.16 was-- so he explained it to me 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.09 that way. 00:12:09.09\00:12:10.56 He gave me a little Bible, the 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.56 New Testament, prayed for me, I 00:12:12.56\00:12:15.03 left, and I knew something had 00:12:15.03\00:12:17.03 changed. 00:12:17.03\00:12:18.03 But I was really excited what 00:12:18.93\00:12:20.17 was going on in that church, I 00:12:20.17\00:12:21.30 was telling everybody, I told 00:12:21.30\00:12:23.57 Rick, who is now our praise and 00:12:23.57\00:12:24.77 worship leader at the church, 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.11 and we went to the back 00:12:27.11\00:12:28.31 together on Wednesday and this 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.55 time someone prayed for me at 00:12:30.55\00:12:34.58 the end of the service. 00:12:34.58\00:12:35.78 But I was already in love with 00:12:35.78\00:12:37.19 God, I was praising and 00:12:37.19\00:12:38.52 worshiping God, and I was in-- 00:12:38.52\00:12:40.66 felt like there was a presence 00:12:40.66\00:12:41.99 in me already. 00:12:41.99\00:12:43.59 Someone prayed for me, I fell 00:12:43.59\00:12:44.93 down, fell backwards. 00:12:44.93\00:12:49.23 I don't-- nobody touched me, I 00:12:49.23\00:12:50.90 know, they only prayed for me, 00:12:50.90\00:12:52.07 like, for two seconds. 00:12:52.07\00:12:53.60 When I was laying down, I just 00:12:54.70\00:12:56.17 started laughing. 00:12:56.17\00:12:57.31 I hadn't laughed or cried in 00:12:57.31\00:12:58.67 years, I was just-- I had a very 00:12:58.67\00:13:02.11 sad, hard life, emotionally and 00:13:02.11\00:13:04.88 personally and financially. 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.95 I laughed and I laughed so loud 00:13:07.95\00:13:11.92 that I think the windows shook 00:13:11.92\00:13:13.96 and it was a huge place, it 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.49 used to be a convention center. 00:13:15.49\00:13:16.99 I like laughing, so I laughed 00:13:18.09\00:13:20.73 so loud and I laughed-- I was 00:13:20.73\00:13:22.16 the only one laughing, but I 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.00 didn't care 'cause they said, 00:13:24.00\00:13:25.27 "If you're in the spirit, 00:13:25.27\00:13:26.03 go with it." 00:13:26.03\00:13:27.04 So I did, I just laughed and 00:13:27.47\00:13:28.90 after a while I stopped 00:13:28.90\00:13:29.90 laughing and I thought, "I 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.07 wonder if I pray, if I can 00:13:31.07\00:13:32.51 laugh some more." 00:13:32.51\00:13:33.84 I didn't know how to pray, so I 00:13:35.38\00:13:36.51 thought maybe I remember the 00:13:36.51\00:13:37.58 "Our Father, " so "Our Father 00:13:37.58\00:13:39.01 who art in heaven," again I 00:13:39.01\00:13:40.98 started laughing really loud. 00:13:40.98\00:13:42.65 Next morning I woke up, I was 00:13:44.02\00:13:45.92 telling Greg, "God is real, God 00:13:45.92\00:13:47.82 is real." 00:13:47.82\00:13:48.89 All I wanted to do was read my 00:13:49.39\00:13:50.73 Bible, all I wanted to do was 00:13:50.73\00:13:51.93 tell people about God, I stopped 00:13:51.93\00:13:55.16 going to work, [laughs] 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.70 I stopped leading the company, 00:13:58.70\00:14:00.54 I couldn't care less. [laughs] 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.27 I thought, "Okay, it's gonna 00:14:03.27\00:14:04.57 take some loss even though we 00:14:04.57\00:14:05.77 weren't doing well at the time, 00:14:05.77\00:14:08.18 I thought, "There's gonna be a 00:14:08.18\00:14:09.44 light at the end of the tunnel 00:14:09.44\00:14:10.61 here," so I just started talking 00:14:10.61\00:14:13.65 to people about God, I bought 00:14:13.65\00:14:15.18 Bibles, gave them away to 00:14:15.18\00:14:16.65 everybody I met, and that was 00:14:16.65\00:14:20.52 my first experience with God 00:14:20.52\00:14:22.82 and I had many, back then in 00:14:22.82\00:14:24.96 particular, they were very 00:14:24.96\00:14:26.39 overwhelming for me. 00:14:26.39\00:14:27.86 As I was reading my Bible, 00:14:27.86\00:14:30.63 it was so overwhelming I had to 00:14:30.63\00:14:32.57 stop and go have a cigarette 00:14:32.57\00:14:34.87 [laughs] because I couldn't 00:14:34.87\00:14:38.11 take it, it was just 00:14:38.11\00:14:39.27 overwhelming me. 00:14:39.27\00:14:40.98 So those are just some of the 00:14:40.98\00:14:43.58 experiences I had with God back 00:14:43.58\00:14:45.71 then and it's transformed my 00:14:45.71\00:14:49.52 life, it's... 00:14:49.52\00:14:51.79 I kept on going back to this 00:14:51.79\00:14:53.52 church... 00:14:53.52\00:14:54.46 for a long time. 00:14:55.02\00:14:56.22 I would go two, three times 00:14:56.22\00:14:57.53 a week. 00:14:57.53\00:14:58.36 My parents thought I was up to 00:14:58.36\00:14:59.46 no good 'cause I'd come home 00:14:59.46\00:15:02.06 very late at night so they 00:15:02.06\00:15:03.80 called my cousin to ask me 00:15:03.80\00:15:05.17 questions. 00:15:05.17\00:15:06.07 She said, "He's doing fine." 00:15:06.07\00:15:07.40 Then they asked the priest and 00:15:07.40\00:15:09.37 after I told them my story he 00:15:09.37\00:15:10.84 says, "I wish I had more 00:15:10.84\00:15:12.21 parishioners like you." 00:15:12.21\00:15:13.54 [laughs] 00:15:13.54\00:15:15.31 So it was the beginning of my 00:15:15.31\00:15:18.55 transformation. 00:15:18.55\00:15:19.75 >> So, Mario, you had this very 00:15:20.42\00:15:22.52 meaningful encounter, personal 00:15:22.52\00:15:24.22 encounter, with God where you 00:15:24.22\00:15:25.79 knew that God was real to you. 00:15:25.79\00:15:27.79 He has taken you a long way on 00:15:27.79\00:15:30.16 your journey. 00:15:30.16\00:15:31.19 How did he get you to where you 00:15:31.19\00:15:32.29 are today? 00:15:32.29\00:15:33.29 [MARIO] Well, originally when I 00:15:34.40\00:15:36.26 had encounters with God and 00:15:36.26\00:15:38.00 experience with God, which were 00:15:38.00\00:15:39.57 many, especially in the 00:15:39.57\00:15:40.77 beginning, I was going to that 00:15:40.77\00:15:43.07 original church in Toronto. 00:15:43.07\00:15:45.27 It had many names over the 00:15:45.27\00:15:46.78 years from "Toronto Airport 00:15:46.78\00:15:48.88 Christian Fellowship" to "The 00:15:48.88\00:15:50.61 Vineyard" to "The Toronto 00:15:50.61\00:15:52.28 Blessing." 00:15:52.28\00:15:53.88 And so I went there for perhaps 00:15:53.88\00:15:55.38 about six months, and then I 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.12 went back to the church where I 00:15:57.12\00:15:59.42 grew up in, and I was there for 00:15:59.42\00:16:02.46 a while and then I started 00:16:02.46\00:16:06.53 going to a few other churches 00:16:06.53\00:16:08.90 just to see what was the 00:16:08.90\00:16:11.77 difference and at one point 00:16:11.77\00:16:13.74 actually I ended up joining a 00:16:13.74\00:16:16.77 All Nations Full Gospel Church, 00:16:16.77\00:16:18.67 which was all Africans, I was 00:16:18.67\00:16:20.91 the only white person in there, 00:16:20.91\00:16:23.11 and I was there for a number of 00:16:23.11\00:16:24.35 months. 00:16:24.35\00:16:25.68 And I enjoyed being there, I 00:16:25.68\00:16:27.02 was learning a few things, and 00:16:27.02\00:16:28.55 then I actually founded-- 00:16:28.55\00:16:30.12 funded a house church. 00:16:30.12\00:16:32.42 I was living in a room because 00:16:32.42\00:16:33.79 I couldn't afford anything, but 00:16:33.79\00:16:35.69 I bought a fairly new house, 00:16:35.69\00:16:37.56 four bedrooms, double car 00:16:37.56\00:16:39.13 garage, leased this person a 00:16:39.13\00:16:41.30 car that was gonna start 00:16:41.30\00:16:42.73 this house church so we were 00:16:42.73\00:16:44.20 there for over a year, I learned 00:16:44.20\00:16:46.74 a lot, experienced a lot, and 00:16:46.74\00:16:49.37 then I was disillusioned with 00:16:49.37\00:16:50.87 that and I thought, "Enough 00:16:50.87\00:16:52.74 bouncing around, I'm gonna make 00:16:52.74\00:16:54.31 the right decision now so I'm 00:16:54.31\00:16:55.91 gonna go to a few churches and 00:16:55.91\00:16:57.78 take my time." 00:16:57.78\00:16:59.15 I had gone actually to the 00:16:59.15\00:17:00.82 Adventist Church two or three 00:17:00.82\00:17:03.59 times. 00:17:03.59\00:17:05.19 A good friend of mine at the 00:17:05.19\00:17:06.29 time was the head elder of the 00:17:06.29\00:17:08.49 church that I'm at presently now 00:17:08.49\00:17:11.49 and so I, again, I went to 00:17:11.49\00:17:17.10 this house church and then I 00:17:17.10\00:17:18.73 left and it took a few months 00:17:18.73\00:17:20.67 to make up my mind. 00:17:20.67\00:17:22.07 I went back to the Adventist 00:17:22.07\00:17:25.61 Church, it was called "Living 00:17:25.61\00:17:27.21 Word" at the time, it's now 00:17:27.21\00:17:28.61 called "Really Living" in 00:17:28.61\00:17:30.68 Hamilton. 00:17:30.68\00:17:31.58 So I went back there and I 00:17:31.58\00:17:33.88 noticed that I was still 00:17:33.88\00:17:35.98 troubled so-- but-- and I had a 00:17:35.98\00:17:38.39 hard time going, but I forced 00:17:38.39\00:17:40.22 myself to go. 00:17:40.22\00:17:41.26 I noticed every time they'd go, 00:17:41.26\00:17:43.16 I'd walk out and I was feeling 00:17:43.16\00:17:44.86 better. 00:17:44.86\00:17:45.86 And after being there a few 00:17:46.49\00:17:49.83 weeks, I realized that because 00:17:49.83\00:17:51.93 I had read the Bible a lot, I 00:17:51.93\00:17:54.70 mean, for hours on end, and I 00:17:54.70\00:17:57.67 recognized that the truth was 00:17:57.67\00:17:59.21 being taught there. 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.51 And I gave a testimony at the 00:18:01.74\00:18:03.35 front of the church saying 00:18:03.35\00:18:05.15 that, "Truth is being taught 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.65 here, I'm glad I'm here and I'm 00:18:07.65\00:18:10.39 here for life." 00:18:10.39\00:18:11.45 And I made up my mind fairly 00:18:12.52\00:18:14.39 quickly on that. 00:18:14.39\00:18:15.66 I was actually upset, I hardly 00:18:16.73\00:18:19.03 ever get angry, but I was angry 00:18:19.03\00:18:21.03 at the church I grew up with 00:18:21.03\00:18:24.37 because I thought, "I'm a 00:18:24.37\00:18:26.90 sinner, how can they teach me 00:18:26.90\00:18:28.57 to sin some more?" and I was 00:18:28.57\00:18:30.81 really upset with that. 00:18:30.81\00:18:32.37 Of course, I'm much more 00:18:32.37\00:18:34.38 accepting, over a period of 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.38 time, I had kind of made peace 00:18:36.38\00:18:38.65 with all that. 00:18:38.65\00:18:39.65 But I have been a Seventh-day 00:18:39.65\00:18:42.02 Adventist now for about 18 or 00:18:42.02\00:18:43.85 19 years out of the 26 years 00:18:43.85\00:18:46.59 that I had this first 00:18:46.59\00:18:48.66 experience with God. 00:18:48.66\00:18:49.82 Yeah. 00:18:50.69\00:18:51.56 >> So during your walk with 00:18:52.16\00:18:53.63 Adventism, you learned about 00:18:53.63\00:18:55.06 the truth and you probably 00:18:55.06\00:18:57.30 spent a lot of time reading 00:18:57.30\00:18:59.07 your Bible, so do you have a 00:18:59.07\00:19:01.54 favourite Bible verse? 00:19:01.54\00:19:03.14 >> You know, I used to think-- 00:19:04.24\00:19:06.21 I've got two actually, but one 00:19:06.21\00:19:08.88 is that "Come to Me all you who 00:19:08.88\00:19:12.38 are weary and I will give you 00:19:12.38\00:19:14.38 rest," but my favourite really 00:19:14.38\00:19:17.89 is that God's presence, there's 00:19:17.89\00:19:20.36 fullness of joy because I never 00:19:20.36\00:19:22.36 had joy all my life till I was 00:19:22.36\00:19:25.19 in my fifties, that's where it 00:19:25.19\00:19:26.86 started and I'm such a 00:19:26.86\00:19:28.90 different person today than I 00:19:28.90\00:19:30.83 used to be. 00:19:30.83\00:19:31.83 I was a sad person, I was not 00:19:32.67\00:19:35.07 happy with life, there was 00:19:35.07\00:19:36.67 something missing, and I'm just 00:19:36.67\00:19:40.71 so glad that I found the truth 00:19:40.71\00:19:42.91 and like the Lord says, "The 00:19:42.91\00:19:45.51 truth will set you free," and 00:19:45.51\00:19:46.95 that's-- I've been set free 00:19:46.95\00:19:48.35 from a lot of negative 00:19:48.35\00:19:51.15 influences in my life. 00:19:51.15\00:19:52.72 I remember the very first time 00:19:54.09\00:19:56.09 I went back to church at that 00:19:56.09\00:19:58.53 initial church that I went to, 00:19:58.53\00:20:00.83 they played the song Amazing 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.50 Grace, and that was talking 00:20:02.50\00:20:06.07 about me. [chuckles] 00:20:06.07\00:20:08.57 "Saved a wretch like me." 00:20:08.57\00:20:10.21 So it's become my 00:20:11.61\00:20:12.97 favourite song. 00:20:12.97\00:20:14.18 As a matter of fact, I'd like 00:20:14.18\00:20:15.41 to play it at my funeral. 00:20:15.41\00:20:17.68 [chuckles] 00:20:17.68\00:20:18.91 Because God has been so 00:20:18.91\00:20:19.98 gracious to me that not a day 00:20:19.98\00:20:21.35 goes by that I'm not so 00:20:21.35\00:20:22.65 grateful for all that He's done 00:20:22.65\00:20:24.69 for me. 00:20:24.69\00:20:25.69 And I'm not talking about the 00:20:25.69\00:20:26.92 financial aspect which has been 00:20:26.92\00:20:29.56 a huge blessing. 00:20:29.56\00:20:30.83 Like Job, I lost everything, 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.43 but I've gotten back ten times 00:20:32.43\00:20:34.20 more. 00:20:34.20\00:20:35.16 But what He's done for me 00:20:36.16\00:20:38.67 personally is just super 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.64 amazing, the peace that I have, 00:20:40.64\00:20:42.94 the fulfillment in life that I 00:20:42.94\00:20:46.14 have, the acceptance I have of 00:20:46.14\00:20:48.51 whatever happens around me 00:20:48.51\00:20:50.78 doesn't troubled me anymore. 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.48 And it's all in God's hands and 00:20:53.28\00:20:55.65 I'm so, so grateful that God 00:20:55.65\00:20:58.89 has been so gracious to me and 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.39 I believe He wants to be 00:21:01.39\00:21:02.62 gracious like that with 00:21:02.62\00:21:03.96 everyone. 00:21:03.96\00:21:04.93 [SOUND OF RUSHING WATER] 00:21:07.40\00:21:10.97 [WOMAN SINGING] ¤ Amazing grace 00:21:13.30\00:21:19.01 ¤ How sweet the sound ¤ 00:21:19.01\00:21:23.28 ¤ That saved a wretch ¤ 00:21:24.25\00:21:28.98 ¤ Like me ¤ 00:21:28.98\00:21:32.79 ¤ I once was lost ¤ 00:21:33.72\00:21:38.16 ¤ But now I'm found ¤ 00:21:38.16\00:21:42.30 ¤ Was blind but now ¤ 00:21:42.30\00:21:46.43 ¤ I see ¤ 00:21:46.43\00:21:49.47 ¤ T'was grace that taught ¤ 00:21:50.84\00:21:55.18 ¤ my heart to fear ¤ 00:21:55.18\00:21:59.48 ¤ And grace my fears relieved ¤ 00:21:59.48\00:22:07.92 ¤ How precious did ¤ 00:22:07.92\00:22:12.26 ¤ that grace appear ¤ 00:22:12.26\00:22:15.70 ¤ The hour I first believed ¤ 00:22:16.33\00:22:23.54 ¤ When we've been there ¤ 00:22:24.77\00:22:29.08 ¤ ten thousand years ¤ 00:22:29.08\00:22:33.45 ¤ Bright shining as the sun ¤ 00:22:33.45\00:22:41.92 ¤ We've no less days ¤ 00:22:41.92\00:22:46.13 ¤ To sing God's praise ¤ 00:22:46.13\00:22:50.00 ¤ Than when we first begun ¤ 00:22:51.07\00:22:58.41 >> Mario I know you have been a 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.28 seeker all your life, why were 00:23:08.28\00:23:11.09 you always seeking? 00:23:11.09\00:23:12.62 [MARIO] I was seeking because I 00:23:13.59\00:23:15.56 was a very unhappy person and I 00:23:15.56\00:23:18.13 knew that there was more than 00:23:18.13\00:23:20.03 what I had. 00:23:20.03\00:23:21.00 So my first experience was, I 00:23:21.93\00:23:24.17 remember, while I was at 00:23:24.17\00:23:25.50 university, I read Maslow's 00:23:25.50\00:23:28.10 Hierarchy of Needs and the 00:23:28.10\00:23:31.27 first one being basic needs of 00:23:31.27\00:23:34.04 life food, clothing and 00:23:34.04\00:23:35.41 shelter, and the fifth one 00:23:35.41\00:23:37.01 being self actualization. 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.51 I had no clue what that meant. 00:23:39.51\00:23:41.25 So I seek in a number of ways, 00:23:41.25\00:23:43.52 my first way of seeking Him 00:23:43.52\00:23:44.85 was, of course, through 00:23:44.85\00:23:45.89 business, I thought if I'm 00:23:45.89\00:23:47.19 successful and I have enough 00:23:47.19\00:23:49.39 money, I don't have to worry 00:23:49.39\00:23:50.56 about life. 00:23:50.56\00:23:51.53 That didn't work. 00:23:51.53\00:23:52.49 Then I started-- and I would 00:23:53.46\00:23:55.16 read a lot about business, then 00:23:55.16\00:23:56.90 I started reading a lot about 00:23:56.90\00:23:58.47 psychology so try to understand 00:23:58.47\00:24:01.67 why. 00:24:01.67\00:24:03.07 That didn't work. 00:24:03.07\00:24:04.21 Then I started reading New Age 00:24:05.04\00:24:06.81 books, read a lot of them at 00:24:06.81\00:24:08.81 the time. 00:24:08.81\00:24:10.01 That didn't work. 00:24:10.01\00:24:11.05 Nothing changed. 00:24:11.05\00:24:12.31 So I was seeking for this 00:24:13.45\00:24:15.35 happiness in life that nothing 00:24:15.35\00:24:17.69 else satisfied and then, of 00:24:17.69\00:24:21.56 course, that happened when I 00:24:21.56\00:24:24.06 found God, because God was 00:24:24.06\00:24:26.29 always there for me, but I was 00:24:26.29\00:24:29.26 avoiding Him. 00:24:29.26\00:24:30.40 >> Has the seeking stopped for 00:24:31.40\00:24:33.87 you or has it continue to grow? 00:24:33.87\00:24:36.07 [MARIO] Well, no, it never 00:24:36.07\00:24:37.11 stops. [laughs] 00:24:37.11\00:24:39.44 How could it stop, I mean, you 00:24:39.44\00:24:42.11 want to know Christ at a deeper 00:24:42.11\00:24:44.58 level, you wanna have a deeper 00:24:44.58\00:24:46.05 relationship with Him, you want 00:24:46.05\00:24:48.18 to know what He's like, you 00:24:48.18\00:24:49.55 want to communicate with Him, 00:24:49.55\00:24:51.32 and how can you unless you 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.89 continue to seek? 00:24:52.89\00:24:54.02 So that's my daily practice, is 00:24:54.02\00:24:55.96 to seek every day. 00:24:55.96\00:24:57.16 >> Has it made you happier? 00:24:58.19\00:24:59.46 Have you found more joy? 00:24:59.46\00:25:00.96 [MARIO] Oh, and can't you tell? 00:25:00.96\00:25:03.20 [laughter] 00:25:03.20\00:25:04.20 I never used to smile. 00:25:04.20\00:25:05.40 As a matter of fact, I remember 00:25:05.40\00:25:07.34 one of my clients said, "You 00:25:07.34\00:25:08.40 have a very poker face," 00:25:08.40\00:25:10.51 because I never changed my 00:25:10.51\00:25:11.77 expression. 00:25:11.77\00:25:12.94 So, of course, it's changed me 00:25:12.94\00:25:14.28 dramatically. 00:25:14.28\00:25:15.34 I have joy in my life, I have 00:25:15.34\00:25:16.54 peace in my life, I have 00:25:16.54\00:25:18.28 something to look forward. 00:25:18.28\00:25:19.81 I have everything I need. 00:25:19.81\00:25:21.42 The only thing I need more is 00:25:21.42\00:25:22.65 that deeper relationship with 00:25:22.65\00:25:23.85 Christ, nothing else. 00:25:23.85\00:25:25.22 >> Mario, next week we want you 00:25:26.12\00:25:27.49 to come back again and tell us 00:25:27.49\00:25:30.26 about how you serve God daily 00:25:30.26\00:25:33.53 and all the miracles that you 00:25:33.53\00:25:35.50 have witnessed. 00:25:35.50\00:25:36.90 >> So we've come to the end of 00:25:36.90\00:25:38.20 our time together, and I wonder 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.24 if, Mario, you could pray for 00:25:40.24\00:25:42.57 our viewers. 00:25:42.57\00:25:43.54
