¤¤ 00:00:00.36\00:00:36.53 >> Hello and thank you for 00:00:42.40\00:00:43.57 joining us on It Is Written 00:00:43.57\00:00:44.81 Canada. 00:00:44.81\00:00:46.11 Today we are visiting 00:00:46.11\00:00:47.61 Professor Pekka Määtänen who 00:00:47.61\00:00:49.18 is an assistant professor of 00:00:49.18\00:00:51.01 biology at Burman University 00:00:51.01\00:00:52.88 in Lacombe, Alberta. 00:00:52.88\00:00:55.15 And as a professor of biology, 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.02 his hope is to ignite within 00:00:57.02\00:00:58.89 his students a love for 00:00:58.89\00:01:01.02 science that can propel them 00:01:01.02\00:01:03.22 to push the boundaries of 00:01:03.22\00:01:04.93 discovery and develop 00:01:04.93\00:01:06.46 innovative ways to promote 00:01:06.46\00:01:08.10 health and healing. 00:01:08.10\00:01:10.63 >> Professor Määtänen has 00:01:10.63\00:01:12.27 presented his scientific work 00:01:12.27\00:01:14.27 at international and national 00:01:14.27\00:01:16.10 science conferences. 00:01:16.10\00:01:18.47 Professor Määtänen, welcome to 00:01:18.47\00:01:20.41 It Is Written Canada. 00:01:20.41\00:01:22.21 >> Thanks so much for having 00:01:22.21\00:01:23.55 me, it's a pleasure to be here 00:01:23.55\00:01:24.75 with you. 00:01:24.75\00:01:25.65 >> So, Professor Määtänen, I 00:01:25.65\00:01:27.15 know that you love science and 00:01:27.15\00:01:28.62 you also love nature and 00:01:28.62\00:01:30.39 studying living things and how 00:01:30.39\00:01:31.99 they reveal God. 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.02 But before we go there, tell 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.89 us a bit about yourself, about 00:01:35.89\00:01:37.66 your children, about your wife 00:01:37.66\00:01:39.56 and also go back a little bit 00:01:39.56\00:01:41.43 and tell us about your name 00:01:41.43\00:01:42.86 and what that means. 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.73 >> Well, I'll start with my 00:01:45.77\00:01:46.57 name. 00:01:46.57\00:01:47.30 So my name's actually 00:01:47.84\00:01:49.37 Velipekka which is "brother 00:01:49.37\00:01:50.74 Pekka" and probably because 00:01:50.74\00:01:52.57 I'm the brother to my older 00:01:52.57\00:01:54.24 siblings and "Pekka" is just 00:01:54.24\00:01:56.21 another version, a Finnish 00:01:56.21\00:01:58.11 version of "Peter." 00:01:58.11\00:01:59.81 So my parents are both from 00:01:59.81\00:02:01.68 Finland, they immigrated from 00:02:01.68\00:02:03.22 Finland directly to Canada, 00:02:03.22\00:02:04.69 but I was born in Canada so I 00:02:04.69\00:02:06.19 grew up here, but I did learn 00:02:06.19\00:02:07.66 the language a little bit as a 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.56 child and yeah, I then went on 00:02:09.56\00:02:13.26 after that to get married to 00:02:13.26\00:02:16.90 my lovely wife, Sarah. 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.03 She is the mother of our three 00:02:19.03\00:02:21.20 wonderful children, Isaac, 00:02:21.20\00:02:22.74 Lilia, and Mina. 00:02:22.74\00:02:24.71 Isaac is 8, Lilia is 5, and 00:02:24.71\00:02:26.31 Mina is 2, so they're really 00:02:26.31\00:02:27.88 the joy of my life. 00:02:27.88\00:02:28.98 >> So, Professor Määtänen, I 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.41 understand that you have PhD 00:02:31.41\00:02:33.21 in Biochemistry from McGill 00:02:33.21\00:02:34.75 University. 00:02:34.75\00:02:36.55 What spurred your interest 00:02:36.55\00:02:38.25 in sciences? 00:02:38.25\00:02:39.52 >> Well, that goes back to 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.89 when I was a young kid going 00:02:42.89\00:02:44.79 out camping with my parents a 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.13 lot, we spent a lot of 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.86 weekends out on Georgian Bay 00:02:47.86\00:02:50.60 which is a bay, a large bay 00:02:50.60\00:02:52.70 off of Lake Huron, as you 00:02:52.70\00:02:54.34 might be aware, beautiful 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.07 islands there, we would go 00:02:56.07\00:02:57.64 claim an island for a weekend. 00:02:57.64\00:02:59.27 We would spend time there and 00:02:59.27\00:03:00.88 I could just search that 00:03:00.88\00:03:02.44 island thoroughly, I could 00:03:02.44\00:03:04.15 find frogs and crayfish and so 00:03:04.15\00:03:06.01 I would collect those and look 00:03:06.01\00:03:07.72 at them, try to understand 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.42 them, race them as kids do, a 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.02 lot of things like that. 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.42 And so just looking at those 00:03:13.42\00:03:15.22 animals, just seeing just how 00:03:15.22\00:03:17.06 they move, how they breathe, 00:03:17.06\00:03:18.53 how they-- all the things they 00:03:18.53\00:03:20.06 did, I always wondered how do 00:03:20.06\00:03:21.20 they work inside? 00:03:21.20\00:03:22.70 How do these function at a 00:03:22.70\00:03:24.20 more basic level? 00:03:24.20\00:03:25.37 And so, yeah, later in life I 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.37 really wanted to study that 00:03:27.37\00:03:29.07 deeper and deeper. 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.04 >> So, Pekka, once I had 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.41 someone ask me this question: 00:03:32.41\00:03:35.14 "How come you believe in 00:03:35.14\00:03:37.11 scripture?" 00:03:37.11\00:03:38.65 Because he said to me, "I used 00:03:38.65\00:03:40.08 "to believe in scripture, 00:03:40.08\00:03:41.32 "I used to go to church, 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.52 "but that's faith. 00:03:42.52\00:03:43.82 I now believe in science." 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.29 So what do you say to someone 00:03:45.29\00:03:46.49 like that with a mindset 00:03:46.49\00:03:47.56 like that? 00:03:47.56\00:03:48.49 >> Hmm. 00:03:48.49\00:03:49.82 So yeah, I definitely have run 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.29 into some people like that. 00:03:51.29\00:03:52.56 I think the most important 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.20 thing I look at initially is, 00:03:54.20\00:03:55.73 you know, who are they 00:03:55.73\00:03:57.20 personally? 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.23 What is their life story? 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.60 Where do they come from? 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.00 Where do they-- what are their 00:04:01.00\00:04:02.00 interests? 00:04:02.00\00:04:02.94 Why do they believe what they 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.27 believe? 00:04:04.27\00:04:05.67 You know, the reality is every 00:04:05.67\00:04:06.74 single one of us has our 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.14 preconceptions and our 00:04:08.14\00:04:09.51 understandings of life and the 00:04:09.51\00:04:10.85 way things work and so just to 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.05 get a better understanding of 00:04:12.05\00:04:13.42 their background and get that 00:04:13.42\00:04:14.58 understanding. 00:04:14.58\00:04:15.85 And then from that point, I 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.29 would dig a little bit deeper 00:04:17.29\00:04:18.92 try to see, OK, well, what is 00:04:18.92\00:04:20.69 it about science that you see 00:04:20.69\00:04:22.42 as being so factual as 00:04:22.42\00:04:24.06 compared to something that's 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.99 more faith-based? 00:04:25.99\00:04:27.60 What is the basis of that 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.96 belief? 00:04:29.96\00:04:31.43 And so usually I find when 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.84 people open up that way, you 00:04:33.84\00:04:37.14 know the Bible says in Isaiah, 00:04:37.14\00:04:39.14 "Come let us reason together," 00:04:39.14\00:04:41.21 right, so coming together, 00:04:41.21\00:04:42.71 having that time together, 00:04:42.71\00:04:44.28 learning to know that person 00:04:44.28\00:04:45.95 allows me then to open up a 00:04:45.95\00:04:47.32 little bit more about why I 00:04:47.32\00:04:48.68 have some issues with certain 00:04:48.68\00:04:50.22 areas of science. 00:04:50.22\00:04:51.65 The other thing that I usually 00:04:51.65\00:04:53.32 point out to them is what is 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.16 science, right, I ask the 00:04:55.16\00:04:56.59 question: what is science? 00:04:56.59\00:04:58.09 And science is really about 00:04:58.09\00:04:59.23 being able to observe and 00:04:59.23\00:05:00.73 experiment on things in the 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.23 natural world, to better 00:05:02.23\00:05:03.53 understand them. 00:05:03.53\00:05:04.57 You know, that's a bit of a 00:05:04.57\00:05:05.97 quick definition, but that's 00:05:05.97\00:05:07.00 essentially what it is. 00:05:07.00\00:05:08.57 So if you cannot observe or 00:05:08.57\00:05:10.17 experiment on something, you 00:05:10.17\00:05:11.87 can't then say this is how it 00:05:11.87\00:05:14.34 is or this is a fact, even 00:05:14.34\00:05:16.01 though it may be called 00:05:16.01\00:05:17.41 "scientific." 00:05:17.41\00:05:18.51 So this is where, for example, 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.02 the origin of life is a great 00:05:20.02\00:05:22.15 example because it is an area 00:05:22.15\00:05:24.59 that we cannot observe or 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.29 experiment on because it was 00:05:26.29\00:05:28.16 historical, it happened a long 00:05:28.16\00:05:29.89 time in the past. 00:05:29.89\00:05:31.29 So at this point in time, we 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.13 can only surmise as to what 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.73 happened back then. 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.23 And so I typically will bring 00:05:36.23\00:05:37.67 that person to an understanding 00:05:37.67\00:05:39.00 that yes, even science doesn't 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.47 have the answers for these 00:05:40.47\00:05:41.80 basic things. 00:05:41.80\00:05:43.04 It's important for us to 00:05:43.04\00:05:44.87 recognize as scientist that we 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.34 don't know everything, we're 00:05:46.34\00:05:47.84 faced with uncertainties and 00:05:47.84\00:05:50.55 that's why we're scientists, 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.35 we're learning more, we're 00:05:52.35\00:05:53.82 researching about the world 00:05:53.82\00:05:55.25 around us, so... 00:05:55.25\00:05:56.58 >> So as you've mentioned, 00:05:56.58\00:05:58.59 Professor Määtänen, the 00:05:58.59\00:06:00.16 mainstream thinking in science 00:06:00.16\00:06:02.32 is quite different from the 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.03 Biblical perspective. 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.99 So how did you navigate a 00:06:05.99\00:06:08.70 secular post-secondary 00:06:08.70\00:06:10.10 education? 00:06:10.10\00:06:11.27 >> So, you know, that's a good 00:06:11.93\00:06:13.54 question. 00:06:13.54\00:06:15.10 I think, you know, having 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.64 gone-- as a child, I went 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.37 through Christian grade school, 00:06:19.37\00:06:22.51 Christian high school and then 00:06:22.51\00:06:24.25 I moved on to a secular 00:06:24.25\00:06:26.21 university so it was a very 00:06:26.21\00:06:28.28 big shift and when I entered 00:06:28.28\00:06:31.29 university, I had professors 00:06:31.29\00:06:33.39 who were extremely brilliant 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.36 individuals. 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.86 Like I had one professor who 00:06:37.86\00:06:39.43 was a-- he was a professional 00:06:39.43\00:06:41.80 musician he had gone to the 00:06:41.80\00:06:43.40 Aspen Music Festival, he was 00:06:43.40\00:06:44.90 playing violin there, he had 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.23 also been accepted into 00:06:46.23\00:06:47.70 medical school, he saw the 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.14 mountains and he saw the trees 00:06:49.14\00:06:50.81 on the mountains and that 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.27 there were different colours 00:06:52.27\00:06:53.58 in the trees and thought, 00:06:53.58\00:06:54.81 "Wow, really interesting. 00:06:54.81\00:06:56.08 "Why are the trees lower down 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.38 "different from the ones 00:06:57.38\00:06:58.71 "higher up? 00:06:58.71\00:07:00.05 "Hmm, let me go do a PhD at 00:07:00.05\00:07:01.25 "UBC on, you know, plant growth 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.72 "in relation to the soil 00:07:02.72\00:07:05.15 "chemistry that's going on and 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.22 understand how that works." 00:07:07.22\00:07:08.72 And so then he went on and got 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.13 his PhD, came back, became a 00:07:10.13\00:07:12.43 professor and so this kind of 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.10 a person is just basically 00:07:14.10\00:07:15.66 telling me evolution is fact. 00:07:15.66\00:07:17.30 Right, so very charismatic, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.10 very well-spoken, and just, 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.34 you know, a person who you 00:07:21.34\00:07:22.87 look at and you're like, "Wow, 00:07:22.87\00:07:24.24 how could he be wrong?" 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.47 Right? 00:07:25.47\00:07:26.94 And so that was my experience 00:07:26.94\00:07:28.84 and I had to really come to 00:07:28.84\00:07:31.11 the point where I need to 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.95 think for myself and better 00:07:32.95\00:07:34.62 understand what is this that 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.62 I'm believing. 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.19 Do I actually still believe in 00:07:38.19\00:07:39.65 God, do I believe in science, 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.42 if you will, going back to the 00:07:41.42\00:07:42.69 first question. 00:07:42.69\00:07:43.83 [MIKE] Mmm, so how did you 00:07:43.83\00:07:44.99 solve that problem? 00:07:44.99\00:07:46.03 >> Well, I don't think I 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.56 solved the problem, you know, 00:07:47.56\00:07:48.96 it was really more of a 00:07:48.96\00:07:51.97 continuous process, but I have 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.40 to say it came to a head when 00:07:54.40\00:07:57.27 I faced some of my own 00:07:57.27\00:07:59.87 personal challenges seeing how 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.14 my-- members of my own family, 00:08:02.14\00:08:04.68 my brother started to drift a 00:08:04.68\00:08:06.25 little bit, seeing how I 00:08:06.25\00:08:08.05 needed to ask God-- 'cause he 00:08:08.05\00:08:09.52 asked a lot of questions, he-- 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.12 and which is good, you know, 00:08:11.12\00:08:12.55 that's what scientist do is 00:08:12.55\00:08:13.72 ask questions. 00:08:13.72\00:08:15.06 So he asked a lot of questions 00:08:15.06\00:08:16.09 He said, "Well, why doesn't 00:08:16.09\00:08:17.26 God just show Himself to me?" 00:08:17.26\00:08:18.39 And as I was having these same 00:08:18.39\00:08:19.59 questions, you know, saying, 00:08:19.59\00:08:20.90 "OK, well, God, why don't You 00:08:20.90\00:08:22.16 "just reveal Yourself to me? 00:08:22.16\00:08:23.50 "I mean, can't You just show 00:08:23.50\00:08:24.67 "Yourself? 00:08:24.67\00:08:25.53 Speak down from heaven." 00:08:25.53\00:08:26.90 You know, as I kept on begging 00:08:26.90\00:08:28.00 God to just show Himself to 00:08:28.00\00:08:29.34 me, He said in a very still 00:08:29.34\00:08:30.81 voice to me, He said, "Why 00:08:30.81\00:08:32.34 "don't you read the letters 00:08:32.34\00:08:33.88 that I've written you?" 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.31 And I said, "Well... 00:08:35.31\00:08:36.75 OK, I suppose." 00:08:36.75\00:08:38.55 And I was pretty grudging, I 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.88 don't think I was particularly 00:08:39.88\00:08:41.48 excited 'cause I thought, 00:08:41.48\00:08:42.92 "Well, I've-- haven't I read 00:08:42.92\00:08:44.35 "the Bible? 00:08:44.35\00:08:45.49 I know this stuff." 00:08:45.49\00:08:46.86 But the reality was I needed 00:08:46.86\00:08:49.02 to know it for myself. 00:08:49.02\00:08:51.06 And so I did make a 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.56 commitment to read my Bible. 00:08:52.56\00:08:53.76 And, you know, it's so 00:08:53.76\00:08:55.06 incredible when you read the 00:08:55.06\00:08:56.40 Bible, as you probably know, 00:08:56.40\00:08:58.53 it either changes you or you 00:08:58.53\00:09:01.80 wanna get rid of it, right? 00:09:01.80\00:09:03.20 There's two different reactions 00:09:03.20\00:09:04.84 and for me I think it was the 00:09:04.84\00:09:06.74 former, it really-- I could 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.78 tell that God was speaking to 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.28 me for each situation each day 00:09:10.28\00:09:12.38 and so I realized, "OK, 00:09:12.38\00:09:14.22 "there's more to You than I 00:09:14.22\00:09:16.05 "originally thought and I need 00:09:16.05\00:09:19.25 to listen." 00:09:19.25\00:09:20.86 So God did speak to me. 00:09:20.86\00:09:22.29 He answered that prayer. 00:09:22.29\00:09:23.96 Maybe not in the way that I 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.56 expected, but, you know, God 00:09:25.56\00:09:27.13 has to be the authority figure 00:09:27.13\00:09:28.86 He can't do it exactly the way 00:09:28.86\00:09:30.40 that you want, right? 00:09:30.40\00:09:31.70 So...yeah. 00:09:31.70\00:09:33.50 >> So, Professor Määtänen, 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.27 did you have any challenges in 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.41 your thinking while you were 00:09:37.41\00:09:38.91 doing your doctorate? 00:09:38.91\00:09:40.24 >> Yeah, so certainly, you 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.71 know, again, at a secular 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.61 university I had-- I was 00:09:45.61\00:09:47.25 surrounded by people who 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.05 pretty much, you know, 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.49 believed the narrative of 00:09:50.49\00:09:51.72 evolution. 00:09:51.72\00:09:52.79 However, there was a lot of 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.09 respect there and I have to 00:09:55.09\00:09:56.59 say that honest scientists, 00:09:56.59\00:09:58.29 generally speaking, they will 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.70 not dig deep into pushing 00:10:00.70\00:10:02.86 different areas that are not 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.80 known scientifically, they are 00:10:04.80\00:10:06.30 more interested in pushing the 00:10:06.30\00:10:07.70 envelope in terms of science, 00:10:07.70\00:10:08.97 you know, can we learn 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.54 greater, deeper truths from 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.34 experimentation and observation 00:10:12.34\00:10:13.78 as we talked about earlier. 00:10:13.78\00:10:15.34 So yeah, I actually felt very 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.51 supported and they knew I 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.31 never showed up to the lab on 00:10:19.31\00:10:21.18 Saturdays 'cause that was when 00:10:21.18\00:10:22.85 I was, you know, at church, I 00:10:22.85\00:10:24.75 would be worshipping God on 00:10:24.75\00:10:26.29 those days. 00:10:26.29\00:10:27.79 I didn't push it into them, 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.16 but they didn't push their 00:10:29.16\00:10:30.53 ideologies into me. 00:10:30.53\00:10:32.13 And I did have one interaction 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.50 that was really incredible 00:10:34.50\00:10:35.96 actually, my supervisor, who 00:10:35.96\00:10:37.47 was the chair of biochemistry 00:10:37.47\00:10:38.87 at the time there, he came to 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.27 me and he said, "Last night I 00:10:40.27\00:10:41.60 "watched the Nova documentary 00:10:41.60\00:10:43.37 "on the origin of life and the 00:10:43.37\00:10:46.07 creation/evolution debate." 00:10:46.07\00:10:48.28 And it's very pro-evolution. 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.81 And he said, "You know, 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.51 "there's an argument though 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.31 "from the intelligent-design 00:10:53.31\00:10:56.25 "view that I don't have an 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.72 "answer for and that's 00:10:58.72\00:11:00.92 irreducible complexity." 00:11:00.92\00:11:03.02 So the idea that things, 00:11:03.02\00:11:06.53 biological organisms, they 00:11:06.53\00:11:08.86 have within them systems that 00:11:08.86\00:11:10.83 require every part to function. 00:11:10.83\00:11:12.70 If one part is missing, 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.07 it doesn't work. 00:11:14.07\00:11:15.20 How do you evolve that? 00:11:15.20\00:11:16.67 This was the question and he 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.04 said, "I don't have an answer 00:11:18.04\00:11:19.07 for that." 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.31 And I thought that was 00:11:20.31\00:11:21.74 incredible how he had that 00:11:21.74\00:11:23.04 intellectual honesty, that 00:11:23.04\00:11:24.31 scientific honesty to say, 00:11:24.31\00:11:25.58 "You know what, I recognize 00:11:25.58\00:11:26.95 "we don't have an answer to 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.25 "this and that's actually a 00:11:28.25\00:11:29.62 good argument in your favour." 00:11:29.62\00:11:30.69 And I thought that was really 00:11:30.69\00:11:31.79 humble of him and I still 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.15 appreciate it to this day that 00:11:33.15\00:11:34.66 he came forward with that, so, 00:11:34.66\00:11:36.29 yeah, I felt very supported. 00:11:36.29\00:11:37.89 >> Very good and very honest, 00:11:37.89\00:11:39.03 right? 00:11:39.03\00:11:40.13 So you talked about the book 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.00 that God speaks to us through, 00:11:42.00\00:11:43.50 the Bible, what about the book 00:11:43.50\00:11:44.80 of nature? 00:11:44.80\00:11:45.97 [PEKKA] Right. 00:11:45.97\00:11:47.47 Yeah, so that is where, you 00:11:47.47\00:11:50.11 know, phase two comes in, I 00:11:50.11\00:11:51.97 guess I would say, in-- 00:11:51.97\00:11:54.21 You know, sometimes we 00:11:54.21\00:11:55.41 look at scripture and we say, 00:11:55.41\00:11:56.54 "Well that's the only thing 00:11:56.54\00:11:57.75 "that God reveals Himself to 00:11:57.75\00:11:58.98 us in," but that's really 00:11:58.98\00:12:00.42 not true. 00:12:00.42\00:12:01.65 We have the life of Christ, we 00:12:01.65\00:12:03.15 have nature. 00:12:03.15\00:12:04.89 And so as I was getting to the 00:12:04.89\00:12:07.16 end of my thesis, it was about 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.06 year four, I was preparing, I 00:12:09.06\00:12:13.09 was writing it, I was doing 00:12:13.09\00:12:14.56 some work on that, I had some 00:12:14.56\00:12:16.20 papers out and stuff and I 00:12:16.20\00:12:17.83 realized, it was 4:00 in the 00:12:17.83\00:12:20.20 morning on a Thursday, I'll 00:12:20.20\00:12:21.77 never forget this, I woke up 00:12:21.77\00:12:24.04 and I was just like, "Wow, I 00:12:24.04\00:12:27.21 "cannot believe this whole 00:12:27.21\00:12:28.78 pathway I've been studying," 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.25 the pathway of protein folding 00:12:30.25\00:12:32.01 quality control, which we can 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.85 get into more detail later, 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.85 but basically, that whole 00:12:35.85\00:12:37.32 pathway is the story of the 00:12:37.32\00:12:38.95 gospel and I just could not 00:12:38.95\00:12:40.66 get over the fact that God had 00:12:40.66\00:12:42.39 revealed Himself in that 00:12:42.39\00:12:44.06 pathway in so many different 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.76 details within it and I just-- 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.46 it had been right in front of 00:12:47.46\00:12:48.56 me and I never saw it. 00:12:48.56\00:12:50.17 So I think a lot of times it's 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.47 perspective again, human 00:12:51.47\00:12:52.80 interpretation, looking at 00:12:52.80\00:12:55.27 nature and if we see God in it 00:12:55.27\00:12:59.17 you know, it's partly the 00:12:59.17\00:13:02.34 lenses we're wearing that 00:13:02.34\00:13:03.91 allow us to do that, it's not 00:13:03.91\00:13:05.85 that it's not there, it's just 00:13:05.85\00:13:07.58 that we're not necessarily 00:13:07.58\00:13:08.88 seeking after that. 00:13:08.88\00:13:10.15 So yeah, it was incredible. 00:13:10.15\00:13:11.65 Really solidified in my mind 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.79 that God is showing Himself in 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.69 nature in a multitude of ways 00:13:15.69\00:13:17.59 and God's design is huge. 00:13:17.59\00:13:19.06 The beauty of the earth, just 00:13:19.06\00:13:20.50 the way that He's created 00:13:20.50\00:13:21.76 everything, it's just grand. 00:13:21.76\00:13:23.33 And so I'm just blessed to 00:13:23.33\00:13:25.07 recognize that God is that 00:13:25.07\00:13:26.97 beautiful designer and He 00:13:26.97\00:13:28.40 wants to make everything clear 00:13:28.40\00:13:29.80 to us, even about His 00:13:29.80\00:13:31.27 character from nature. 00:13:31.27\00:13:32.64 ¤For the beauty of the earth¤ 00:13:33.14\00:13:42.58 ¤For the glory of the skies 00:13:42.58\00:13:52.16 ¤For the love which 00:13:52.16\00:13:56.63 ¤from our birth 00:13:56.63\00:14:01.44 ¤Over and around us lies 00:14:01.44\00:14:11.15 ¤Lord of all, to Thee we raise 00:14:11.15\00:14:17.22 ¤This our grateful 00:14:17.22\00:14:20.59 ¤song of praise 00:14:20.59\00:14:25.83 ¤For the gift of Thy dear son 00:14:25.83\00:14:31.30 ¤For the hope of 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.07 ¤heaven at last 00:14:34.07\00:14:37.07 ¤For the Spirit's victory won 00:14:37.07\00:14:41.98 ¤For the crown 00:14:41.98\00:14:44.25 ¤when life is past 00:14:44.25\00:14:47.65 ¤Lord of all, to Thee we raise 00:14:47.65\00:14:53.69 ¤This our grateful 00:14:53.69\00:14:56.62 ¤song of praise 00:14:56.62\00:15:01.16 ¤This our grateful 00:15:01.16\00:15:05.83 ¤song of praise 00:15:05.83\00:15:14.68 ¤¤ 00:15:14.68\00:15:29.46 >> The earth truly is full of 00:15:29.46\00:15:30.86 beauty and, Professor Määtänen, 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.69 you are involved in scientific 00:15:32.69\00:15:35.30 research. 00:15:35.30\00:15:36.70 Do you have any other examples 00:15:36.70\00:15:38.37 from nature that reveal God? 00:15:38.37\00:15:42.20 >> Well, I'm so glad you asked 00:15:43.30\00:15:44.54 I think the more I teach and 00:15:44.54\00:15:46.07 the more I study, the more 00:15:46.07\00:15:47.48 examples come out. 00:15:47.48\00:15:49.48 So there's a lot, but I wanna 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.38 share a few of them here 00:15:51.38\00:15:52.78 quickly with you. 00:15:52.78\00:15:54.15 So why don't we look in our 00:15:54.15\00:15:56.22 Bibles, actually. 00:15:56.22\00:15:58.39 If we look in Luke chapter 6 00:15:59.72\00:16:02.52 and verse 45, it says... 00:16:02.52\00:16:05.86 Now, we see that as a 00:16:19.61\00:16:22.34 character trait, right, that 00:16:22.34\00:16:23.85 our heart is our, our mind is 00:16:23.85\00:16:25.21 our character. 00:16:25.21\00:16:26.85 But interestingly, in 00:16:26.85\00:16:28.68 developmental biology, there 00:16:28.68\00:16:31.65 are two heart fields that the 00:16:31.65\00:16:33.96 heart develops from. 00:16:33.96\00:16:35.72 These are the progenitor cells 00:16:35.72\00:16:37.39 that the heart comes from. 00:16:37.39\00:16:38.89 Those two heart fields, one 00:16:38.89\00:16:40.46 becomes certain parts of the 00:16:40.46\00:16:41.66 heart, the other one becomes 00:16:41.66\00:16:43.67 parts of the heart, but also 00:16:43.67\00:16:45.90 your facial muscles, your 00:16:45.90\00:16:47.67 lungs and parts of the heart 00:16:47.67\00:16:51.04 as well. 00:16:51.04\00:16:52.94 So, quite literally, out of 00:16:52.94\00:16:55.18 the heart the mouth speaks. 00:16:55.18\00:16:56.71 It's quite incredible. 00:16:56.71\00:16:58.05 Even in the developmental 00:16:58.05\00:16:59.35 biology textbook it says, "In 00:16:59.35\00:17:00.98 a remarkable way," that's how 00:17:00.98\00:17:02.62 they phrase it, "this is what 00:17:02.62\00:17:04.19 happens." 00:17:04.19\00:17:05.49 So it's just another example 00:17:05.49\00:17:07.19 of how God has written into 00:17:07.19\00:17:08.96 nature the way that He's 00:17:08.96\00:17:10.43 created us. 00:17:10.43\00:17:11.76 The other thing that I wanna 00:17:13.03\00:17:14.66 share quickly is, you know, 00:17:14.66\00:17:17.43 many of us, I'm sure you and 00:17:17.43\00:17:19.37 others, have thought about 00:17:19.37\00:17:21.64 ministry and how best, 00:17:21.64\00:17:25.11 especially in marriage as well 00:17:25.11\00:17:27.44 people can work together, 00:17:27.44\00:17:29.01 right, so how do we work 00:17:29.01\00:17:30.51 together best? 00:17:30.51\00:17:32.11 And there's a principle that 00:17:32.11\00:17:34.68 actually is illustrated to us 00:17:34.68\00:17:36.65 through muscle development 00:17:36.65\00:17:39.02 that teaches us how ministry 00:17:39.02\00:17:41.79 works best and you might think 00:17:41.79\00:17:44.89 this is odd, but if you 00:17:44.89\00:17:47.00 consider a muscle fibre, a 00:17:47.00\00:17:49.26 muscle fibre is just one cell, 00:17:49.26\00:17:51.53 but a muscle fibre has many, 00:17:51.53\00:17:53.20 many nuclei within it, so 00:17:53.20\00:17:55.37 many, many nuclei within that 00:17:55.37\00:17:56.74 one cell. 00:17:56.74\00:17:57.71 How did that come to be? 00:17:57.71\00:17:59.21 How come there are so many 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.68 nuclei within one cell and how 00:18:00.68\00:18:02.41 can they all work together? 00:18:02.41\00:18:03.75 Well, for many years they 00:18:04.61\00:18:06.25 didn't know for sure whether a 00:18:06.25\00:18:07.88 large cell would form and then 00:18:07.88\00:18:09.52 more nuclei would form within 00:18:09.52\00:18:11.02 it or whether individual cells 00:18:11.02\00:18:12.52 would come together with their 00:18:12.52\00:18:15.19 nuclei and then fuse to form 00:18:15.19\00:18:16.79 that one long fibre. 00:18:16.79\00:18:18.46 But after working on this, 00:18:18.46\00:18:20.23 they found that indeed the 00:18:20.23\00:18:22.23 individual forms first so the 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.33 identity of the individual, 00:18:24.33\00:18:25.87 the nucleus of that individual 00:18:25.87\00:18:27.24 cell will form first, and 00:18:27.24\00:18:28.70 then, only then when they 00:18:28.70\00:18:30.27 reach a certain density, those 00:18:30.27\00:18:32.11 cells will come together to 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.74 form that muscle fibre. 00:18:33.74\00:18:35.44 This process, I believe, very 00:18:35.44\00:18:37.35 much aligns with the way 00:18:37.35\00:18:39.28 marriage should happen where 00:18:39.28\00:18:40.75 you should have your own 00:18:40.75\00:18:42.22 identity already in Christ, 00:18:42.22\00:18:43.75 you should have your own clear 00:18:43.75\00:18:45.19 who you are and have your 00:18:45.19\00:18:46.65 happiness, right, we know that 00:18:46.65\00:18:48.19 if you're happy before you're 00:18:48.19\00:18:49.59 married, it's better chance 00:18:49.59\00:18:50.96 you're gonna be happier after, 00:18:50.96\00:18:52.19 right, you guys probably have 00:18:52.19\00:18:53.53 even talked about this. 00:18:53.53\00:18:55.10 So that happiness coming 00:18:55.10\00:18:56.77 together needs to happen after 00:18:56.77\00:19:00.47 you've established yourself. 00:19:00.47\00:19:02.10 So the text I wanted to share, 00:19:02.64\00:19:04.54 this is Proverbs chapter 24:27 00:19:04.54\00:19:08.18 says... 00:19:08.18\00:19:09.71 So don't try and go too-- 00:19:14.82\00:19:18.05 go ahead of the game, get 00:19:18.05\00:19:19.69 yourself settled, figure 00:19:19.69\00:19:21.39 things out, know that you're 00:19:21.39\00:19:22.69 gonna be prepared and then go 00:19:22.69\00:19:23.89 forward with either marriage 00:19:23.89\00:19:25.19 or ministry as well. 00:19:25.19\00:19:26.86 So there's a lot of different 00:19:26.86\00:19:28.30 ways our individuality can 00:19:28.30\00:19:30.37 contribute to ministry, but we 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.07 first, we have to recognize 00:19:32.07\00:19:33.54 the power and the importance 00:19:33.54\00:19:35.00 of our individuality, but also 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.87 recognize that we have to not 00:19:36.87\00:19:40.81 come together prematurely, 00:19:40.81\00:19:43.01 put it that way. 00:19:43.01\00:19:44.31 OK, the other example I wanna 00:19:44.31\00:19:46.82 share, so, many of you are 00:19:46.82\00:19:49.38 probably familiar with omega-3 00:19:49.38\00:19:52.29 fatty acids, right, omega-3 00:19:52.29\00:19:53.79 polyunsaturated fatty acids, 00:19:53.79\00:19:55.32 these are probably the most 00:19:55.32\00:19:56.49 taken supplement of all 00:19:56.49\00:19:57.56 actually. 00:19:57.56\00:19:58.66 Now the thing about omega-3's 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.63 is it is not the omega-3 00:20:00.63\00:20:03.60 itself that's the actually the 00:20:03.60\00:20:05.23 active agent so it is 00:20:05.23\00:20:08.07 molecules that are derived 00:20:08.07\00:20:09.80 from omega-3 that are the 00:20:09.80\00:20:11.61 active agents of resolution of 00:20:11.61\00:20:13.11 inflammation. 00:20:13.11\00:20:14.61 And I want to propose to you 00:20:14.61\00:20:18.88 this idea that there's another 00:20:18.88\00:20:21.48 symbol used for the Holy 00:20:21.48\00:20:23.32 Spirit, right, we know what 00:20:23.32\00:20:24.85 that symbol is, oil, right, 00:20:24.85\00:20:26.92 oil and omega-3 is an oil. 00:20:26.92\00:20:29.56 The oil of the Holy Spirit, 00:20:29.56\00:20:31.36 what is the Holy Spirit's role? 00:20:31.36\00:20:33.50 That is found in John 16:8. 00:20:33.50\00:20:36.56 It says, "And when He is come, 00:20:36.56\00:20:39.10 referring to the Holy Spirit, 00:20:39.10\00:20:40.44 the Comforter, "He will 00:20:40.44\00:20:42.24 "reprove the world of sin, of 00:20:42.24\00:20:43.97 "righteousness, and of 00:20:43.97\00:20:45.41 judgment," so there's three 00:20:45.41\00:20:46.84 aspects to the Holy Spirit's 00:20:46.84\00:20:48.04 work. 00:20:48.04\00:20:48.94 Now, interestingly, the oils 00:20:48.94\00:20:52.21 that we take into our bodies, 00:20:52.21\00:20:55.02 they provide the precursor 00:20:55.02\00:20:57.35 molecules or they provide the 00:20:57.35\00:20:59.22 necessary building blocks for 00:20:59.22\00:21:01.56 prostaglandins, these are 00:21:01.56\00:21:03.59 actually helping us to 00:21:03.59\00:21:05.73 identify a problem and inflame 00:21:05.73\00:21:08.20 in that area. 00:21:08.20\00:21:09.90 Inflammation is not necessarily 00:21:09.90\00:21:11.43 bad, right, because if you're 00:21:11.43\00:21:12.97 injured, you need inflammation 00:21:12.97\00:21:14.10 to bring healing so that 00:21:14.10\00:21:15.57 inflammation happens and then 00:21:15.57\00:21:18.44 knowing the sin, right, being 00:21:18.44\00:21:21.08 conscious of where the pain is 00:21:21.08\00:21:22.98 specifically and then having a 00:21:22.98\00:21:25.61 remedy for that, bringing in 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.02 the troops, bringing in the 00:21:27.02\00:21:28.25 macrophages, bringing in the 00:21:28.25\00:21:29.48 neutrophils, bringing in all 00:21:29.48\00:21:30.85 those cells are gonna come in 00:21:30.85\00:21:32.22 and help clean up and help fix 00:21:32.22\00:21:33.86 that, there's a lot of 00:21:33.86\00:21:35.49 involvement of these fats in 00:21:35.49\00:21:37.09 that process and then, 00:21:37.09\00:21:38.99 amazingly, there's resolution 00:21:38.99\00:21:41.03 and resolution comes when 00:21:41.03\00:21:42.80 those omega-3-derived 00:21:42.80\00:21:44.57 pro-resolving lipid mediators, 00:21:44.57\00:21:46.07 they're actually called SPM's, 00:21:46.07\00:21:47.70 pro-resolving lipid mediators, 00:21:47.70\00:21:49.14 they will come in there and 00:21:49.14\00:21:50.34 they will help to clear, 00:21:50.34\00:21:51.77 actively clear the debris, 00:21:51.77\00:21:53.84 clear the infection and bring 00:21:53.84\00:21:55.34 resolution to that inflammation. 00:21:55.34\00:21:56.91 So there's a three-part 00:21:56.91\00:21:59.01 process so the Holy Spirit 00:21:59.01\00:22:00.72 doesn't just convict us of our 00:22:00.72\00:22:02.75 problems, He also empowers us 00:22:02.75\00:22:04.15 to do what's right which is 00:22:04.15\00:22:06.02 beautiful. 00:22:06.02\00:22:07.09 So that's another alignment. 00:22:07.09\00:22:09.09 And the final example I wanted 00:22:09.09\00:22:10.73 to give to you is an area that 00:22:10.73\00:22:14.10 I'm studying more recently now 00:22:14.10\00:22:15.53 and that is the microbiome 00:22:15.53\00:22:17.83 and these are the bacteria, 00:22:17.83\00:22:19.57 but not just the bacteria, any 00:22:19.57\00:22:20.97 organism, any micro-organism 00:22:20.97\00:22:22.37 living in or on you and the 00:22:22.37\00:22:24.37 vast majority of them do live 00:22:24.37\00:22:25.84 in your gastrointestinal tract, 00:22:25.84\00:22:27.21 primarily in your colon, 00:22:27.21\00:22:29.01 however, there are many also 00:22:29.01\00:22:30.55 on your skin, many in other 00:22:30.55\00:22:32.75 places, right? 00:22:32.75\00:22:34.62 Now you may have noticed in 00:22:34.62\00:22:36.45 the news and in the media that 00:22:36.45\00:22:37.99 the microbiome is getting more 00:22:37.99\00:22:39.09 and more press because 00:22:39.09\00:22:40.46 everybody's recognizing this 00:22:40.46\00:22:42.59 is like another organ, it's 00:22:42.59\00:22:43.93 another part of our body. 00:22:43.93\00:22:45.73 The bacteria produce hormones, 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.03 the bacteria produce all kinds 00:22:47.03\00:22:48.50 of different neuropeptides, 00:22:48.50\00:22:49.93 different molecules that 00:22:49.93\00:22:51.30 affect our functioning. 00:22:51.30\00:22:53.50 And so this area has become 00:22:53.50\00:22:56.14 quite hot and now there are a 00:22:56.14\00:22:57.67 lot of therapies that are 00:22:57.67\00:22:59.17 targeting the microbiome, 00:22:59.17\00:23:00.71 trying to figure out how can 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.38 we change those bacteria and 00:23:02.38\00:23:04.51 make them potentially change us. 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.82 Well, this whole idea of the 00:23:07.88\00:23:10.92 microbiome has brought out to 00:23:10.92\00:23:13.46 the research community that 00:23:13.46\00:23:15.16 there are both good and bad 00:23:15.16\00:23:16.76 microbes, right? 00:23:16.76\00:23:17.76 You have the good and the bad 00:23:17.76\00:23:18.86 and there's this battle 00:23:18.86\00:23:20.16 between good and evil, if you 00:23:20.16\00:23:21.90 will, happening inside of you. 00:23:21.90\00:23:24.73 Hmm, does that sound familiar? 00:23:24.73\00:23:26.20 Right? 00:23:26.20\00:23:27.07 So the origin of evil, 00:23:27.07\00:23:28.37 actually, if you look back to 00:23:28.37\00:23:29.77 Ezekiel 28, it started within, 00:23:29.77\00:23:31.94 it was inside, it was not 00:23:31.94\00:23:33.68 something that happened from, 00:23:33.68\00:23:35.71 you know it wasn't an external 00:23:35.71\00:23:37.05 force that came in, it was an 00:23:37.05\00:23:38.71 internal struggle that brought 00:23:38.71\00:23:40.42 this to fruition. 00:23:40.42\00:23:41.85 So one of the challenges that 00:23:42.52\00:23:44.89 we're facing as humanity is we 00:23:44.89\00:23:49.26 have lost the old microbes, 00:23:49.26\00:23:50.86 the good microbes that we used 00:23:50.86\00:23:52.09 to have and they're getting 00:23:52.09\00:23:53.29 eradicated. 00:23:53.29\00:23:54.23 One thing that we can do to 00:23:54.23\00:23:58.33 improve our microbiome is to 00:23:58.33\00:24:00.67 eat foods that promote the 00:24:00.67\00:24:02.37 good bacteria, right? 00:24:02.37\00:24:04.44 And so a person might ask, 00:24:04.44\00:24:07.38 "Well, how do you eat the 00:24:07.38\00:24:08.64 "right foods? 00:24:08.64\00:24:09.68 "What are the right foods? 00:24:09.68\00:24:10.85 What promotes good bacteria?" 00:24:10.85\00:24:12.11 Well, fibre, right, I'm sure 00:24:12.11\00:24:13.25 you've talked about fibre, 00:24:13.25\00:24:14.38 fibre is what those bacteria 00:24:14.38\00:24:15.68 will actually ferment and make 00:24:15.68\00:24:17.32 byproducts that will you, but 00:24:17.32\00:24:19.72 what is the original fibre? 00:24:19.72\00:24:21.49 What's the first fibre that 00:24:21.49\00:24:22.72 gets your body making-- or gets 00:24:22.72\00:24:25.46 your body in tune? 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.13 >> Oh, uh, breast milk? 00:24:27.13\00:24:28.86 [PEKKA] Breast milk, right. 00:24:28.86\00:24:30.20 Well, breast milk contains, 00:24:30.20\00:24:32.13 believe it or not, something 00:24:32.13\00:24:33.54 very much like fibre. 00:24:33.54\00:24:34.90 We call these "human milk 00:24:36.17\00:24:37.94 oligosaccharides." 00:24:37.94\00:24:39.54 Now human milk oligosaccharides, 00:24:39.54\00:24:41.54 they are food, not for us 00:24:41.54\00:24:44.05 because we can't digest them 00:24:44.05\00:24:45.45 directly, they're food for 00:24:45.45\00:24:47.15 these bacteria, the good ones, 00:24:47.15\00:24:48.28 and those bacteria will 00:24:48.28\00:24:50.02 convert that-- those human 00:24:50.02\00:24:52.19 milk sugars into beneficial 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.02 byproducts that our colon can 00:24:54.02\00:24:55.32 use as energy. 00:24:55.32\00:24:56.69 So this process of building 00:24:56.69\00:24:59.06 the good microbiome within us, 00:24:59.06\00:25:01.60 begins actually with milk, 00:25:01.60\00:25:03.06 with mother's milk. 00:25:03.06\00:25:04.73 Well, is there a Bible text 00:25:04.73\00:25:06.60 that talks about milk? 00:25:06.60\00:25:08.04 >> Yeah, I think of feeding on 00:25:08.04\00:25:09.14 the milk of the word. 00:25:09.14\00:25:10.24 [PEKKA] The milk of the word. 00:25:10.24\00:25:11.44 So let's take a look at 00:25:11.44\00:25:12.84 1 Peter chapter 2, verses 2 00:25:12.84\00:25:14.08 and 3 and it says... 00:25:14.08\00:25:16.91 So God wants us to have that 00:25:28.66\00:25:30.59 pure milk and that's gonna 00:25:30.59\00:25:32.13 combat, if you read the first 00:25:32.13\00:25:33.56 verse before that, it's gonna 00:25:33.56\00:25:34.73 combat that bad stuff. 00:25:34.73\00:25:37.73 It's gonna be the good 00:25:37.73\00:25:39.47 promotion of good bacteria 00:25:39.47\00:25:41.00 within us, the promotion of 00:25:41.00\00:25:42.34 good thoughts, the promotion 00:25:42.34\00:25:43.64 of God within us, the Word 00:25:43.64\00:25:45.27 dwelling within us and I think 00:25:45.27\00:25:46.47 that's really what this 00:25:46.47\00:25:47.51 program is about, right? 00:25:47.51\00:25:48.68 >> Exactly and that's what 00:25:48.68\00:25:49.64 Jesus said, right? 00:25:49.64\00:25:50.98 "It is written, 'Man shall not 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.11 live by bread alone,'" which 00:25:52.11\00:25:53.11 we need, "'but by every word 00:25:53.11\00:25:54.42 "'that proceeds out of the 00:25:54.42\00:25:55.45 mouth of God.'" 00:25:55.45\00:25:56.65 And so there is this 00:25:56.65\00:25:58.15 compatibility between science 00:25:58.15\00:26:00.96 and a faith in God and they're 00:26:00.96\00:26:04.06 very compatible. 00:26:04.06\00:26:05.66 So we've come to the end of 00:26:05.66\00:26:07.13 our time together and I 00:26:07.13\00:26:08.53 wonder, Pekka, if you could 00:26:08.53\00:26:09.70 close with a word of prayer 00:26:09.70\00:26:10.87 for us? 00:26:10.87\00:26:11.73 >> I'd be happy to do that. 00:26:11.73\00:26:13.20 Our Father in heaven, Lord, we 00:26:14.87\00:26:16.17 are just so thankful that You 00:26:16.17\00:26:17.81 reveal Yourself to us in ways 00:26:17.81\00:26:19.61 we can understand, through 00:26:19.61\00:26:21.61 Your Word, but also through 00:26:21.61\00:26:23.55 the book of nature. 00:26:23.55\00:26:25.35 Lord, we know that each one of 00:26:25.35\00:26:26.75 us needs You, we need You to 00:26:26.75\00:26:29.18 change our hearts for Your 00:26:29.18\00:26:30.82 Holy Spirit to come into us 00:26:30.82\00:26:32.29 and just show us where the bad 00:26:32.29\00:26:34.29 things are and help us resolve 00:26:34.29\00:26:36.83 those things, for us to be 00:26:36.83\00:26:39.66 continually in Your Word, to 00:26:39.66\00:26:41.13 build up the good side in that 00:26:41.13\00:26:43.00 battle that's within us. 00:26:43.00\00:26:44.80 I just pray that You would 00:26:44.80\00:26:46.53 continue to help us seek You, 00:26:46.53\00:26:49.00 whether in nature or in Your 00:26:49.00\00:26:50.44 Word, help us to know that 00:26:50.44\00:26:52.14 You're there, that You want 00:26:52.14\00:26:53.38 the best for us and that 00:26:53.38\00:26:54.64 You're coming soon. 00:26:54.64\00:26:55.81 We thank You for all these 00:26:55.81\00:26:56.91 things and we pray this in 00:26:56.91\00:26:57.85 Jesus' name, amen. 00:26:57.85\00:26:58.88 [MIKE] Amen, amen. 00:26:58.88\00:26:59.95 >> Professor Määtänen, thank 00:26:59.95\00:27:01.15 you so much for joining us 00:27:01.15\00:27:02.45 today on It Is Written Canada. 00:27:02.45\00:27:04.15 It was such an honour to have 00:27:04.15\00:27:05.72 you with us. 00:27:05.72\00:27:07.12 >> It's been my pleasure. 00:27:07.12\00:27:08.39 Thanks so much for having me. 00:27:08.39\00:27:10.13 >> Friends, as Professor Pekka 00:27:12.09\00:27:13.36 Määtänen shared with us today, 00:27:13.36\00:27:15.66 we see scientific evidence of 00:27:15.66\00:27:18.20 design in nature which means 00:27:18.20\00:27:20.00 that there must be a designer. 00:27:20.00\00:27:21.97 So our free offer for you 00:27:21.97\00:27:23.81 today features a conversation 00:27:23.81\00:27:25.87 between two highly educated 00:27:25.87\00:27:27.94 scientists with divergent 00:27:27.94\00:27:30.38 views on the origins of life, 00:27:30.38\00:27:33.55 entitled Creation?
