>> Hello and thank you for 00:00:00.93\00:00:02.36 joining us on It Is Written 00:00:02.36\00:00:04.07 Canada. 00:00:04.07\00:00:05.27 Imagine living in primitive, 00:00:05.27\00:00:07.97 tiny stone huts filled with 00:00:07.97\00:00:10.11 smoke, poor ventilation, and 00:00:10.11\00:00:11.84 almost no insulation. 00:00:11.84\00:00:14.44 Many people who live in the 00:00:14.44\00:00:16.44 remote parts of Peru have to 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.21 endure these kinds of 00:00:18.21\00:00:19.58 conditions which are hazardous 00:00:19.58\00:00:21.18 to their health. 00:00:21.18\00:00:22.82 [RENÉ] High in the Andes 00:00:22.82\00:00:24.52 Mountains with snow and ice and 00:00:24.52\00:00:26.49 freezing temperatures, many of 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.96 these Quechua people, 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.33 descendants of the Inca, do not 00:00:31.33\00:00:33.23 live in warm, healthy homes like 00:00:33.23\00:00:35.90 we do here in Canada. 00:00:35.90\00:00:38.27 >> Recently, ADRA Canada got 00:00:38.27\00:00:39.97 involved helping these people 00:00:39.97\00:00:42.40 in the remote parts of the 00:00:42.40\00:00:44.21 Andes Mountains to build warm, 00:00:44.21\00:00:46.64 well-ventilated houses for 00:00:46.64\00:00:48.71 themselves and their families. 00:00:48.71\00:00:51.21 >> Today we will be talking to 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.05 Steve Matthews who is the 00:00:53.05\00:00:54.68 Executive Director and Peggy 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.92 Caesar, the Communications 00:00:56.92\00:00:58.95 Specialist for ADRA Canada, 00:00:58.95\00:01:01.42 and they are going to tell us 00:01:01.42\00:01:03.36 about the warm and healthy 00:01:03.36\00:01:05.49 homes they have been building 00:01:05.49\00:01:07.30 for the people of Peru. 00:01:07.30\00:01:09.23 ¤¤ 00:01:11.70\00:01:45.90 [ALL SHOUT] ADRA! 00:01:48.20\00:01:50.27 >> Welcome again to It Is 00:01:53.01\00:01:54.74 Written Canada. 00:01:54.74\00:01:56.41 Steve Matthews and Peggy 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.35 Caesar are with us from ADRA 00:01:58.35\00:02:00.48 Canada and they're gonna tell 00:02:00.48\00:02:02.62 us how they are building 00:02:02.62\00:02:04.52 healthy and warm homes for the 00:02:04.52\00:02:06.55 people of Peru. 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.02 Welcome to It Is Written 00:02:08.02\00:02:09.52 Canada, Steve and Peggy. 00:02:09.52\00:02:11.49 >> Thank you so much for 00:02:11.49\00:02:12.63 having us today. 00:02:12.63\00:02:13.83 >> Really wonderful to be here. 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.23 [MIKE] What I really like is 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.67 your ponchos, they're really 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.57 authentic Peruvian ponchos. 00:02:18.57\00:02:20.87 >> Well, I'm so glad that you 00:02:20.87\00:02:22.04 do because we brought some 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.20 scarves for you and René. 00:02:23.20\00:02:24.24 [MIKE] Scarves! 00:02:24.24\00:02:25.27 Whoa that's cool. 00:02:25.27\00:02:26.21 [RENÉ] These are lovely. 00:02:26.21\00:02:27.21 >> So what are they made out 00:02:27.21\00:02:28.14 of, Peggy? 00:02:28.14\00:02:28.88 >> These are made out of 00:02:28.88\00:02:29.91 alpaca wool and they are 00:02:29.91\00:02:30.91 hand-woven. 00:02:30.91\00:02:32.18 >> Hand-woven, look at that. 00:02:32.18\00:02:33.78 >> Look at the patterns, it's 00:02:33.78\00:02:35.35 so intricate. 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.09 >> Wow, so I'm-- thank you! 00:02:37.09\00:02:40.36 This is pretty cool. 00:02:40.36\00:02:41.59 Just to show everybody what it 00:02:41.59\00:02:43.09 looks like, I don't think I'm 00:02:43.09\00:02:44.36 gonna... 00:02:44.36\00:02:45.06 >> It looks good on you, 00:02:45.06\00:02:45.89 by the way. 00:02:45.89\00:02:46.59 >> You think so? 00:02:46.59\00:02:47.36 >> Absolutely. 00:02:47.36\00:02:48.36 >> I don't know that I'm gonna 00:02:48.36\00:02:49.33 wear it all the time, but I'll 00:02:49.33\00:02:50.50 wear it for now so I can kinda 00:02:50.50\00:02:51.43 fit in with you guys. 00:02:51.43\00:02:52.50 So you went to Peru, this is 00:02:52.50\00:02:54.14 your first trip to Peru I 00:02:54.14\00:02:55.84 understand. 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.11 OK, so what was it like for you? 00:02:57.11\00:02:58.77 >> Well, it was-- when we 00:02:58.77\00:03:01.11 arrived, we first landed and 00:03:01.11\00:03:03.11 we were at quite a high 00:03:03.11\00:03:04.85 elevation so the-- when we 00:03:04.85\00:03:06.92 first landed in Cuzco, we were 00:03:06.92\00:03:10.15 at an elevation of 3500 metres 00:03:10.15\00:03:12.25 above sea level and the 00:03:12.25\00:03:13.96 project location was at about 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.62 5200 metres above sea level. 00:03:15.62\00:03:17.33 It gets quite cold. 00:03:17.33\00:03:18.59 Even though we were at the 00:03:18.59\00:03:19.76 equator, I was quite shocked 00:03:19.76\00:03:20.93 at how cold it was, but also 00:03:20.93\00:03:22.36 you could really notice the 00:03:22.36\00:03:25.20 thin air, the oxygen levels 00:03:25.20\00:03:27.77 just weren't there so you get 00:03:27.77\00:03:29.57 tired really, really fast. 00:03:29.57\00:03:31.44 >> Fifty-two hundred metres. 00:03:31.44\00:03:34.41 >> Yeah, so about 16-, 17,000 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.21 feet. 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.05 >> Wow! 00:03:37.05\00:03:37.91 >> So at that altitude 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.11 everything is hard to do. 00:03:39.11\00:03:40.55 >> So I understood you had to 00:03:40.55\00:03:41.88 get on horses. 00:03:41.88\00:03:43.22 Was that uncomfortable? 00:03:43.22\00:03:44.62 [STEVE] Oh, no, I loved it. 00:03:44.62\00:03:46.72 I grew up with horses. 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.92 My first job was Steve's 00:03:48.92\00:03:51.89 Horse Rides as a teenager so 00:03:51.89\00:03:54.10 being able to go for a 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.43 horse rides was great. 00:03:55.43\00:03:56.83 I was-- when I got there, I 00:03:56.83\00:03:58.90 thought what an amazing 00:03:58.90\00:04:00.50 blessing to be able to be 00:04:00.50\00:04:01.97 here, surrounded by all this 00:04:01.97\00:04:03.57 beauty, up in these mountains 00:04:03.57\00:04:05.17 and then to be able to jump on 00:04:05.17\00:04:06.74 a horse and go for a horse 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.38 ride was just icing on the 00:04:08.38\00:04:10.48 cake for me. 00:04:10.48\00:04:11.55 [Mike laughs] 00:04:11.55\00:04:12.58 [PEGGY] I, on the other hand, 00:04:12.58\00:04:13.45 not so much. 00:04:13.45\00:04:14.75 The last time I was on a horse 00:04:14.75\00:04:16.05 was around high school, but it 00:04:16.05\00:04:17.52 really did speak to the 00:04:17.52\00:04:18.89 remoteness of the community 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.42 and the projects that we 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.89 were doing. 00:04:21.89\00:04:23.16 >> So, Peggy and Steve, tell 00:04:23.59\00:04:25.19 us about the people of Peru 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.23 and also the places that you 00:04:27.23\00:04:28.93 visited. 00:04:28.93\00:04:29.90 >> While it was quite cool, 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.73 the people were very warm. 00:04:32.73\00:04:34.37 We were welcomed with open 00:04:34.37\00:04:36.34 arms everywhere we went. 00:04:36.34\00:04:39.01 We-- at one house, one 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.21 community, we were followed by 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.88 a band who got out and played 00:04:43.88\00:04:46.08 music and sang and danced for 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.68 us every time we went to a new 00:04:47.68\00:04:49.05 house in the community. 00:04:49.05\00:04:50.75 So it was-- we were really 00:04:50.75\00:04:52.25 well-welcomed and you could 00:04:52.25\00:04:53.59 see just how much of a 00:04:53.59\00:04:54.86 difference we were making in 00:04:54.86\00:04:56.19 the lives of the people 00:04:56.19\00:04:57.53 because of how appreciative 00:04:57.53\00:04:59.23 they were for us to be there. 00:04:59.23\00:05:01.16 >> Absolutely, it was a 00:05:01.60\00:05:02.56 wonderful experience. 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.00 >> So I noticed from looking 00:05:04.00\00:05:05.07 at some of the footage from 00:05:05.07\00:05:06.27 your trip that the people 00:05:06.27\00:05:07.54 dress in very colourful 00:05:07.54\00:05:09.30 costumes. 00:05:09.30\00:05:10.44 Were they just doing that for 00:05:10.44\00:05:11.61 the cameras? 00:05:11.61\00:05:12.67 [PEGGY] They do, they do. 00:05:12.67\00:05:13.71 You know, this was a question 00:05:13.71\00:05:14.91 that we wondered about so we 00:05:14.91\00:05:16.18 asked and the answer is no, 00:05:16.18\00:05:17.61 they dress like this every 00:05:17.61\00:05:19.11 day, particularly the women 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.95 are in beautifully ornate and 00:05:20.95\00:05:23.62 elaborate costumes and it's 00:05:23.62\00:05:25.19 just beautiful. 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.49 [MIKE] So let's take a look at 00:05:26.49\00:05:27.66 some of that footage right now. 00:05:27.66\00:05:29.36 [VOICE OVER] High up in the 00:05:37.03\00:05:38.47 Andean Mountains of Peru, 00:05:38.47\00:05:40.54 indigenous people groups 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.27 attempt to eke out a living 00:05:42.27\00:05:44.87 primarily through the raising 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.44 of llamas and alpacas. 00:05:46.44\00:05:48.94 Direct descendants of the Inca, 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.28 the Quechua are dedicated to 00:05:53.28\00:05:54.95 keeping the traditions, 00:05:54.95\00:05:57.15 culture, and language of their 00:05:57.15\00:05:58.82 people alive. 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.49 The mountains that surround 00:06:03.29\00:06:04.69 the small farms provide 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.80 stunning views. 00:06:06.80\00:06:09.06 At an altitude of 13,500 feet, 00:06:09.06\00:06:12.73 the air is thin, the winters 00:06:12.73\00:06:15.14 are cold and vegetation 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.04 is sparse. 00:06:17.04\00:06:18.44 Living above the tree line, 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.28 building materials are limited 00:06:21.28\00:06:23.24 to mud bricks and stones. 00:06:23.24\00:06:26.58 Houses are covered with thatch 00:06:26.58\00:06:29.05 roofs that don't offer a lot 00:06:29.05\00:06:31.12 of insulation from the cold 00:06:31.12\00:06:32.92 winter winds. 00:06:32.92\00:06:34.12 Most of the homes have just 00:06:34.79\00:06:37.29 one room of about 16 feet by 00:06:37.29\00:06:40.03 10 feet with a dirt floor. 00:06:40.03\00:06:42.53 The cook stove is usually 00:06:43.16\00:06:45.23 located at one end of the room. 00:06:45.23\00:06:47.94 Without proper ventilation, 00:06:47.94\00:06:50.14 each time food is prepared, 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.44 the one-room home fills with 00:06:52.44\00:06:54.18 smoke. 00:06:54.18\00:06:55.11 Prolonged exposure causes a 00:06:55.94\00:06:58.18 variety of respiratory 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.22 illnesses, especially in 00:07:00.22\00:07:02.25 children and the elderly. 00:07:02.25\00:07:04.42 [TRANSLATOR] My husband and I 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.79 raised six children here in 00:07:07.79\00:07:09.36 this house. 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.09 We were very fortunate that 00:07:11.09\00:07:12.29 all six of our children 00:07:12.29\00:07:13.73 survived. 00:07:13.73\00:07:14.86 Many of our friends had 00:07:14.86\00:07:16.20 children who died because of 00:07:16.20\00:07:17.60 the cold winters. 00:07:17.60\00:07:18.87 There were some winters when 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.24 we were not able to afford 00:07:21.24\00:07:22.84 shoes for our children and 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.31 they would get frost bite on 00:07:24.31\00:07:25.51 their toes. 00:07:25.51\00:07:26.54 It seemed like they were 00:07:27.01\00:07:28.28 always sick with some kind of 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.64 cold, flu, or diarrhea. 00:07:29.64\00:07:32.41 We had no medicine. 00:07:32.41\00:07:34.08 Instead we would brew tea and 00:07:34.08\00:07:35.65 pray they would recover. 00:07:35.65\00:07:37.45 [TRANSLATOR] I was born in 00:07:38.79\00:07:40.46 this part of Peru, and grew up 00:07:40.46\00:07:42.46 here with my parents. 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.36 Our house was just the one 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.09 room that included our stove. 00:07:46.09\00:07:48.43 Our house was always full of 00:07:48.43\00:07:50.17 smoke, dust, and ash. 00:07:50.17\00:07:52.73 We really didn't have windows, 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.54 just holes and cracks in the 00:07:55.54\00:07:57.44 walls for ventilation. 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.47 When the wind would blow in 00:07:59.47\00:08:01.04 the winter, the room would get 00:08:01.04\00:08:02.24 very cold. 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.05 At night we would need to use 00:08:04.05\00:08:05.98 eight blankets to keep warm. 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.85 [NARRATOR] And yet through all 00:08:09.82\00:08:11.29 of the difficulty, the Quechua 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.25 people love their highland 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.32 community. 00:08:15.32\00:08:16.79 While many youth do leave to 00:08:16.79\00:08:18.76 try and find work in other 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.26 parts of Peru, they often 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.06 return to their homes to once 00:08:22.06\00:08:23.80 again be with their families 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.93 and continue the life ways 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.90 they know and love. 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.84 One thing that has had a 00:08:31.41\00:08:32.84 profound difference in recent 00:08:32.84\00:08:34.78 years is the partnership the 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.08 community has made with ADRA. 00:08:37.08\00:08:40.25 [VOICE OVER TRANSLATING] 00:08:42.15\00:08:43.49 Living so high up in the 00:08:43.49\00:08:44.72 mountains brings many 00:08:44.72\00:08:46.55 difficulties and challenges. 00:08:46.55\00:08:48.56 We are always looking for ways 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.56 that we can improve our lives, 00:08:50.56\00:08:52.26 but our resources are very 00:08:52.26\00:08:53.80 limited. 00:08:53.80\00:08:54.83 We started looking for 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.46 humanitarian agencies that 00:08:56.46\00:08:57.90 might help us. 00:08:57.90\00:08:59.67 Since we are Christian, we 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.34 prayed that God would send us 00:09:01.34\00:09:02.74 a Christian organization to 00:09:02.74\00:09:04.11 help us. 00:09:04.11\00:09:05.34 Our prayers were answered a 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.18 couple of years ago when we 00:09:07.18\00:09:08.64 met people from ADRA. 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.61 We were so delighted when they 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.01 agreed to come and work with 00:09:12.01\00:09:13.75 us to improve our community. 00:09:13.75\00:09:16.35 But where to start? 00:09:16.35\00:09:18.22 There were so many needs. 00:09:18.22\00:09:20.66 After discussing our options, 00:09:20.66\00:09:22.79 it was decided that the best 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.39 first step would be to build 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.29 homes for people that would be 00:09:26.29\00:09:28.50 warmer and provide a healthier 00:09:28.50\00:09:30.77 environment for our children. 00:09:30.77\00:09:32.87 [TRANSLATOR] Whenever ADRA 00:09:35.57\00:09:36.91 does a project like this, we 00:09:36.91\00:09:38.64 like to involve the people as 00:09:38.64\00:09:40.31 much as possible so that in 00:09:40.31\00:09:41.94 the end they feel a strong 00:09:41.94\00:09:43.61 sense of ownership. 00:09:43.61\00:09:45.75 We had the people make all the 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.45 mud bricks, they gather all 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.25 the traditional local material 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.15 for the roof as well. 00:09:51.15\00:09:52.99 ADRA then works closely with 00:09:52.99\00:09:54.72 them, providing technical 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.16 advice and specialized 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.29 materials to help them build a 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.46 safe, warm, healthy home. 00:10:00.46\00:10:03.13 We provide insulation for the 00:10:04.03\00:10:05.77 ceiling, wood for a floor, the 00:10:05.77\00:10:08.27 door, and materials for a nice 00:10:08.27\00:10:10.74 stove that has a chimney to 00:10:10.74\00:10:12.77 vent the smoke when they cook. 00:10:12.77\00:10:14.61 We also encouraged the people 00:10:15.64\00:10:17.45 to take old bottles and put 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.25 these into the walls as they 00:10:19.25\00:10:21.25 were building their homes so 00:10:21.25\00:10:23.02 that they could bring more UV 00:10:23.02\00:10:24.65 light into their homes 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.32 to kill bacteria. 00:10:26.32\00:10:27.99 [TRANSLATOR] We do everything 00:10:29.32\00:10:30.83 that we possibly can to harness 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.33 the energy of the sun. 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.00 We installed a trombe wall in 00:10:34.00\00:10:35.70 every home. 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.30 A trombe wall captures the 00:10:37.30\00:10:38.70 heat from the sun. 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.07 Rays of the sun are passed 00:10:40.07\00:10:41.87 through glass or heavy plastic 00:10:41.87\00:10:43.74 sheets to heat a wall of stone 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.74 or bricks that has been 00:10:45.74\00:10:47.14 painted black. 00:10:47.14\00:10:48.61 This traps the heat in the 00:10:48.61\00:10:49.91 small space and heats up the 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.41 wall during the day which is 00:10:51.41\00:10:53.52 then slowly dispersed into the 00:10:53.52\00:10:55.62 home through the night. 00:10:55.62\00:10:57.45 When we made the new stoves, 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.19 we also installed a piping 00:10:59.19\00:11:01.26 system that distributes heat 00:11:01.26\00:11:03.26 from the stove, through the 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.09 wall of the home. 00:11:05.09\00:11:07.00 We wanted to capture and use 00:11:07.00\00:11:09.06 every bit of energy and heat 00:11:09.06\00:11:11.83 that we could. 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.30 >> What an incredible project. 00:11:14.60\00:11:16.30 So they used colourful bottles 00:11:16.30\00:11:18.01 for windows, I never would 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.61 have thought of that, and then 00:11:19.61\00:11:21.11 the insulation of that heating 00:11:21.11\00:11:22.61 wall and then the pipes that 00:11:22.61\00:11:25.48 were installed to heat up the 00:11:25.48\00:11:27.62 house from their new stove. 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.65 So they must have been 00:11:29.65\00:11:31.09 overjoyed, I mean, these 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.55 people get this new warm house. 00:11:32.55\00:11:34.39 >> Absolutely, you know, it 00:11:34.39\00:11:35.59 was really touching to see 00:11:35.59\00:11:37.26 them show us around their 00:11:37.26\00:11:38.76 newly renovated home with 00:11:38.76\00:11:40.23 great pride and just joy it 00:11:40.23\00:11:41.96 was just tremendous. 00:11:41.96\00:11:43.80 And as we visited, you know, 00:11:43.80\00:11:45.63 we were able to see these 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.64 smart innovations installed in 00:11:47.64\00:11:49.54 the homes and watch how they 00:11:49.54\00:11:51.14 really helped to increase the 00:11:51.14\00:11:52.74 quality of life for everyone 00:11:52.74\00:11:54.38 in the home. 00:11:54.38\00:11:55.71 >> And on top of that, it's a 00:11:56.18\00:11:57.55 very environmentally friendly 00:11:57.55\00:11:59.81 method that we're using. 00:11:59.81\00:12:01.15 It's all passive solar. 00:12:01.15\00:12:02.75 So the sun comes in, heats up 00:12:02.75\00:12:05.42 the black painted inside area. 00:12:05.42\00:12:07.96 It's just all passive, there's 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.86 no energy used in the process. 00:12:09.86\00:12:12.26 And one of the areas we're 00:12:12.26\00:12:13.70 really focusing at with ADRA 00:12:13.70\00:12:15.23 is to try to be more 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.83 environmentally focused and 00:12:16.83\00:12:18.20 environmentally friendly so 00:12:18.20\00:12:19.57 just a great project from that 00:12:19.57\00:12:20.64 side as well. 00:12:20.64\00:12:21.67 >> And it was healthy because, 00:12:22.20\00:12:23.61 of course, you know, as we 00:12:23.61\00:12:24.97 renovated the cook stoves in 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.44 the homes, you know, the wives 00:12:26.44\00:12:28.24 and the women, the mothers, 00:12:28.24\00:12:29.61 showed us with great pride 00:12:29.61\00:12:30.95 their new stoves, how they 00:12:30.95\00:12:32.38 cook with their new stoves and 00:12:32.38\00:12:34.18 we were happy because we know 00:12:34.18\00:12:35.52 that with the proper 00:12:35.52\00:12:36.89 ventilation of the smoke, the 00:12:36.89\00:12:40.02 children were not going to be 00:12:40.02\00:12:41.56 suffering with bronchial 00:12:41.56\00:12:42.89 issues or ocular eye issues 00:12:42.89\00:12:45.49 and so really all the way 00:12:45.49\00:12:47.03 around, a tremendous 00:12:47.03\00:12:48.70 improvement to their lives. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.43 >> One of the ladies that we 00:12:50.43\00:12:51.90 visited who is a-- planned to 00:12:51.90\00:12:54.34 be a future recipient, has 00:12:54.34\00:12:56.34 told us that almost all of the 00:12:56.34\00:12:57.71 families in that area have 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.01 lost at least one child 00:12:59.01\00:13:00.84 because of health-related 00:13:00.84\00:13:02.84 issues over the years, so 00:13:02.84\00:13:04.91 pretty sad to see that. 00:13:04.91\00:13:07.22 Which is why they're so 00:13:07.22\00:13:08.65 thankful when they get one of 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.05 these renovations 'cause it 00:13:10.05\00:13:11.32 really does make a 00:13:11.32\00:13:12.65 life-changing difference for 00:13:12.65\00:13:13.86 them. 00:13:13.86\00:13:14.69 >> So, Steve, I believe you 00:13:15.22\00:13:16.69 received royal treatment. 00:13:16.69\00:13:19.16 >> Yeah, definitely. 00:13:19.16\00:13:20.60 It was quite an experience. 00:13:20.60\00:13:22.33 When we showed up, you're 00:13:22.33\00:13:24.37 treated like a dignitary and so 00:13:24.37\00:13:26.30 I actually brought along some 00:13:26.30\00:13:28.74 of the clothing that they got 00:13:28.74\00:13:30.41 me to wear. 00:13:30.41\00:13:31.44 So this is one of the hats 00:13:31.44\00:13:33.17 that they had. 00:13:33.17\00:13:35.58 This is kind of reserved for 00:13:35.58\00:13:37.31 their dignitary when you show 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.35 up and it's a scarf that they 00:13:39.35\00:13:41.78 also gave as well. 00:13:41.78\00:13:43.62 When I met-- when I arrived, 00:13:44.69\00:13:47.16 one of the things they do for 00:13:47.16\00:13:48.36 their dignitaries is the 00:13:48.36\00:13:49.82 dignitary rides into the 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.86 community on a horse and 00:13:51.86\00:13:53.56 accompanied with the mayor. 00:13:53.56\00:13:55.00 So the mayor met us and I had 00:13:55.00\00:13:56.46 no idea this was happening, by 00:13:56.46\00:13:57.93 the way, I just showed up and 00:13:57.93\00:13:59.23 I see these horses there and 00:13:59.23\00:14:01.57 they said, "Oh, no, you're not 00:14:01.57\00:14:03.37 "allowed to drive into the 00:14:03.37\00:14:04.61 "town, you have to ride in on 00:14:04.61\00:14:06.24 "horse with the mayor. 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.01 "It's reserved for the 00:14:08.01\00:14:09.14 dignitaries." 00:14:09.14\00:14:10.41 So I-- it seems really odd, by 00:14:10.41\00:14:12.11 the way, to be called a 00:14:12.11\00:14:13.58 dignitary, it just didn't seem 00:14:13.58\00:14:14.98 natural, but hey, you know, 00:14:14.98\00:14:16.62 you go with what they're doing. 00:14:16.62\00:14:19.25 So we rode in on-- into the 00:14:19.25\00:14:20.79 community, but then once we 00:14:20.79\00:14:22.52 get to the community, that's 00:14:22.52\00:14:23.86 where the real royal treatment 00:14:23.86\00:14:25.36 came in because they had built 00:14:25.36\00:14:27.56 a throne for me when I arrived 00:14:27.56\00:14:30.70 so they-- and I've worked in 00:14:30.70\00:14:32.80 construction most of my life 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.20 so I could look and tell this 00:14:34.20\00:14:35.34 is actually pretty fresh 00:14:35.34\00:14:36.67 concrete that was there so 00:14:36.67\00:14:37.94 they had literally built the 00:14:37.94\00:14:39.31 throne for me. 00:14:39.31\00:14:40.54 The people that we're working 00:14:40.54\00:14:41.78 with, they're descended from 00:14:41.78\00:14:43.18 the Inca. 00:14:43.18\00:14:44.41 Whenever an Inca king would 00:14:44.41\00:14:46.01 come to visit the community, 00:14:46.01\00:14:48.02 they would have a throne for 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.55 the king to sit on so they 00:14:50.55\00:14:52.52 built a throne for me to sit 00:14:52.52\00:14:54.59 on while I was there. 00:14:54.59\00:14:55.99 So very interesting. 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.26 And I'm typically pretty 00:14:58.26\00:15:00.20 extroverted, but to be put 00:15:00.20\00:15:02.73 front and centre in front of 00:15:02.73\00:15:04.17 the whole community, like, 00:15:04.17\00:15:05.73 they all literally surrounded, 00:15:05.73\00:15:07.20 almost like in a semi-circle 00:15:07.20\00:15:08.70 around me so it was a little 00:15:08.70\00:15:10.37 different... 00:15:10.37\00:15:11.61 [PEGGY] We thought it was 00:15:11.91\00:15:13.11 great fun. (laughs) 00:15:13.11\00:15:14.28 [STEVE] Yeah, they thought it 00:15:14.28\00:15:15.31 was just great. 00:15:15.31\00:15:16.34 [PEGGY] We thoroughly 00:15:16.34\00:15:17.08 enjoyed it. 00:15:17.08\00:15:17.71 [STEVE] But-- and the other 00:15:17.78\00:15:18.78 thing is, when we were riding 00:15:18.78\00:15:20.62 into the community, they had 00:15:20.62\00:15:22.55 "ADRA" spelled out in the 00:15:22.55\00:15:23.79 mountain. 00:15:23.79\00:15:24.79 So they had, with white rocks, 00:15:24.79\00:15:26.89 spelled "ADRA" in the mountain 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.39 so we had our own Hollywood 00:15:28.39\00:15:30.39 sign up in the Andes Mountains 00:15:30.39\00:15:31.96 of Peru. 00:15:31.96\00:15:33.73 It was a real honour, but you 00:15:33.73\00:15:35.50 could just see, like, all of 00:15:35.50\00:15:37.10 these-- we were welcomed so 00:15:37.10\00:15:38.87 openly, you could just see the 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.57 difference that our project 00:15:40.57\00:15:41.90 has made in the lives of so 00:15:41.90\00:15:43.04 many people there in the 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.44 community. 00:15:44.44\00:15:45.74 >> So that was a lot of fun, 00:15:45.74\00:15:47.18 but you went there to check 00:15:47.18\00:15:48.58 out a project to make sure 00:15:48.58\00:15:50.38 that they were using the funds 00:15:50.38\00:15:52.38 wisely, so what was your feel 00:15:52.38\00:15:55.45 for the project? 00:15:55.45\00:15:56.95 Was it actually meeting its 00:15:56.95\00:15:58.75 purpose? 00:15:58.75\00:15:59.62 Did you look at it and say, 00:15:59.62\00:16:00.89 "Yes, this is actually serving 00:16:00.89\00:16:02.36 the people?" 00:16:02.36\00:16:03.89 >> I think if you talk to the 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.76 people, I really believe it's 00:16:05.76\00:16:07.76 gone above and beyond. 00:16:07.76\00:16:10.13 Especially when we go-- one 00:16:10.13\00:16:11.90 of the home owners said that 00:16:11.90\00:16:13.30 they used to have to sleep 00:16:13.30\00:16:14.77 with ten blankets on them and 00:16:14.77\00:16:16.87 now three blankets is all they 00:16:16.87\00:16:18.74 need to sleep with. 00:16:18.74\00:16:20.61 So then when we look at how 00:16:20.61\00:16:22.54 healthy the children are, the 00:16:22.54\00:16:24.11 children of these homes, you 00:16:24.11\00:16:25.48 know, they're not suffering 00:16:25.48\00:16:26.78 with the sickness and illness 00:16:26.78\00:16:28.35 that they had previously. 00:16:28.35\00:16:30.12 One thing that we're also 00:16:30.12\00:16:31.69 piloting, we've got one, just 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.25 one project where we've 00:16:33.25\00:16:34.79 installed a bathroom and they 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.56 have running hot water, they 00:16:36.56\00:16:38.06 can take hot showers for the 00:16:38.06\00:16:39.46 first time in their lives, 00:16:39.46\00:16:40.90 they have a flush toilet, 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.03 running water at the sink, so 00:16:43.03\00:16:45.83 it's the comforts that we 00:16:45.83\00:16:47.40 would have. 00:16:47.40\00:16:48.70 They have tiled floors, just 00:16:48.70\00:16:50.31 very, very nice. 00:16:50.31\00:16:51.97 So that's something we wanna 00:16:51.97\00:16:53.14 include in a future phase of 00:16:53.14\00:16:54.68 our work there, by the way. 00:16:54.68\00:16:56.14 [MIKE] So the previous homes 00:16:56.14\00:16:57.88 were a lot smaller as well. 00:16:57.88\00:17:00.18 That's what I understand, that 00:17:00.18\00:17:01.58 you had to go into these small 00:17:01.58\00:17:02.95 homes, and the people were 00:17:02.95\00:17:04.29 pretty short as well. 00:17:04.29\00:17:05.42 [STEVE] Yeah, I felt really 00:17:05.42\00:17:06.25 tall when we were there. 00:17:06.25\00:17:07.36 >> Yeah, I fit right in. 00:17:07.36\00:17:08.12 (both laugh) 00:17:08.12\00:17:09.56 But yeah, the homes are 00:17:09.56\00:17:10.69 completely transformed from 00:17:10.69\00:17:12.29 the previous-- we visited a 00:17:12.29\00:17:13.93 family that showed us their 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.36 previous home that they were 00:17:15.36\00:17:16.90 living in for about two or 00:17:16.90\00:17:18.17 more years and then the new 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.70 home, the healthy home which 00:17:19.70\00:17:22.00 was like night and day, really. 00:17:22.00\00:17:23.77 >> So what was it like for 00:17:23.77\00:17:25.07 you, Steve, getting into that 00:17:25.07\00:17:26.21 home? 00:17:26.21\00:17:26.98 >> Well, I mean, I had to, I 00:17:26.98\00:17:28.54 was almost crawling to get 00:17:28.54\00:17:30.25 into the doorway, it was 00:17:30.25\00:17:31.95 very short. 00:17:31.95\00:17:33.62 The home was about seven feet 00:17:33.62\00:17:35.18 by eleven feet. 00:17:35.18\00:17:36.72 They had a husband, wife, and 00:17:36.72\00:17:38.95 their two kids living in that 00:17:38.95\00:17:40.52 home of seven by eleven and in 00:17:40.52\00:17:43.32 that home they also had-- 00:17:43.32\00:17:44.76 that's their kitchen and 00:17:44.76\00:17:46.13 everything was in there so not 00:17:46.13\00:17:47.96 a lot of room in that house. 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.83 But, yeah, to get in was 00:17:50.83\00:17:52.90 quite difficult. 00:17:52.90\00:17:54.27 I don't think, I don't even 00:17:54.27\00:17:55.74 know if it was four feet tall 00:17:55.74\00:17:57.24 to get into the home. 00:17:57.24\00:17:59.51 [PEGGY] Extremely dark, very.. 00:17:59.51\00:18:01.68 >> Yeah, no light at all. 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.01 >> ...no lighting at all, no 00:18:03.01\00:18:04.71 ventilation so it was quite 00:18:04.71\00:18:07.38 unhealthy. 00:18:07.38\00:18:08.72 >> And the thatched roof, it 00:18:08.72\00:18:10.75 had holes in it, like, just... 00:18:10.75\00:18:13.99 I was on the verge of tears 00:18:13.99\00:18:17.23 going into that home and some 00:18:17.23\00:18:18.63 of the rest of us that were 00:18:18.63\00:18:19.93 there as well, we were just 00:18:19.93\00:18:21.23 really, really moved by the 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.13 fact that people used to live 00:18:23.13\00:18:24.50 in that. 00:18:24.50\00:18:25.43 [RENE] So you know what I 00:18:26.20\00:18:27.57 really appreciate is the fact 00:18:27.57\00:18:29.17 how you got-- everyone worked 00:18:29.17\00:18:31.41 together so you had home 00:18:31.41\00:18:33.41 owners that were working 00:18:33.41\00:18:35.11 together to build their new 00:18:35.11\00:18:36.68 homes and that must've 00:18:36.68\00:18:38.65 affected the cost of 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.62 these homes. 00:18:40.62\00:18:42.05 So how much does it cost for 00:18:42.05\00:18:44.69 you to build one home for 00:18:44.69\00:18:46.89 these people of Peru? 00:18:46.89\00:18:49.56 >> It's tremendous, the 00:18:49.56\00:18:51.09 project, because for $2500 we 00:18:51.09\00:18:53.96 can build a warm and healthy 00:18:53.96\00:18:55.40 home and a bathroom for a 00:18:55.40\00:18:57.13 family in Chillca, Peru. 00:18:57.13\00:18:59.53 [MIKE] So how many homes were 00:18:59.53\00:19:00.74 you able to build? 00:19:00.74\00:19:02.80 >> Right now I believe we've-- 00:19:02.80\00:19:04.71 we're just under a hundred 00:19:04.71\00:19:06.78 homes that we've completed. 00:19:06.78\00:19:08.61 We do have another phase of 00:19:08.61\00:19:10.18 our project that we're looking 00:19:10.18\00:19:11.88 to go forward with. 00:19:11.88\00:19:13.42 The cost of this next phase is 00:19:13.42\00:19:15.32 $132,000, is what we're trying 00:19:15.32\00:19:18.02 to raise for the project. 00:19:18.02\00:19:21.49 But just the other day I got 00:19:21.49\00:19:23.06 an email from the project 00:19:23.06\00:19:24.53 manager from ADRA Peru and 00:19:24.53\00:19:28.00 they have, because of our 00:19:28.00\00:19:29.66 visit, it's really generated a 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.17 lot of interest in the 00:19:31.17\00:19:32.77 community, 450 homes is what 00:19:32.77\00:19:36.07 they're now requesting to have 00:19:36.07\00:19:39.54 this upgrade, so it's, yeah, 00:19:39.54\00:19:43.31 it's gonna be quite an 00:19:43.31\00:19:44.75 investment. 00:19:44.75\00:19:46.05 When you think of 450 homes at 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.78 $2500 a home, you're in the 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.82 million-dollar range to try to 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.72 get that. 00:19:51.72\00:19:52.85 So the $132,000 we're trying 00:19:52.85\00:19:54.22 to raise now, is only going 00:19:54.22\00:19:55.56 to really scratch the surface 00:19:55.56\00:19:57.29 of the real need there. 00:19:57.29\00:19:58.79 And that's just for the homes, 00:19:58.79\00:20:00.16 they have a whole other list 00:20:00.16\00:20:01.33 of other projects as well 00:20:01.33\00:20:02.80 they'd like us to help out with. 00:20:02.80\00:20:04.47 >> So tell us about those 00:20:04.47\00:20:06.13 projects that you, you know, 00:20:06.13\00:20:08.40 that you became aware of when 00:20:08.40\00:20:09.77 you were there, Steve. 00:20:09.77\00:20:11.61 >> Well, I'm an engineer as my 00:20:11.61\00:20:14.94 professional background before 00:20:14.94\00:20:16.54 joining ADRA and they 00:20:16.54\00:20:18.78 actually-- one of the 00:20:18.78\00:20:20.55 communities asked us to build 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.18 them a hydro dam to be able to 00:20:22.18\00:20:25.45 provide power because they 00:20:25.45\00:20:27.16 want to-- alpaca farming is 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.86 their main source of income 00:20:29.86\00:20:31.66 and so they, you know, they 00:20:31.66\00:20:34.00 sheer the wool and what 00:20:34.00\00:20:36.60 they're looking for is to 00:20:36.60\00:20:37.93 build a factory so they can 00:20:37.93\00:20:39.37 take that low quality product 00:20:39.37\00:20:41.34 and make it into a higher 00:20:41.34\00:20:42.74 quality product and get a 00:20:42.74\00:20:44.41 better return on their alpaca. 00:20:44.41\00:20:47.51 So they wanted a hydro dam to 00:20:48.18\00:20:49.68 be able to power the factory 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.48 so that they could increase 00:20:51.48\00:20:53.25 their income. 00:20:53.25\00:20:54.55 Also there's ecotourism is a 00:20:54.55\00:20:56.99 big thing in this area as well. 00:20:56.99\00:20:59.19 They're looking for helping with 00:20:59.19\00:21:01.12 a second home that they could 00:21:01.12\00:21:02.72 then rent out to people who 00:21:02.72\00:21:04.06 are coming-- 'cause it's up 00:21:04.06\00:21:05.39 near the glaciers of the Andes 00:21:05.39\00:21:06.63 Mountains so they get a lot of 00:21:06.63\00:21:08.83 ecotourists and... 00:21:08.83\00:21:11.57 >> We also visited a school as 00:21:11.57\00:21:13.47 well that was 60 years old and 00:21:13.47\00:21:15.67 just falling apart. 00:21:15.67\00:21:17.27 And they're doing the best 00:21:17.27\00:21:18.71 they can with what they have, 00:21:18.71\00:21:19.94 but they're just looking for, 00:21:19.94\00:21:21.01 you know, a hand up, 00:21:21.01\00:21:22.44 a helping hand. 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.15 [MIKE] So what I like about 00:21:24.15\00:21:25.61 what you've been talking about 00:21:25.61\00:21:26.88 is that we here in Canada, we 00:21:26.88\00:21:29.25 don't see running water as a 00:21:29.25\00:21:31.02 luxury, we don't see that we 00:21:31.02\00:21:32.59 can have a shower, we can have 00:21:32.59\00:21:34.06 running water, we can have 00:21:34.06\00:21:35.32 flush toilets, but a lot of 00:21:35.32\00:21:36.39 people in the world do not 00:21:36.39\00:21:37.99 have that luxury, but with the 00:21:37.99\00:21:40.03 work of ADRA Canada, you've 00:21:40.03\00:21:41.60 been able to help the people 00:21:41.60\00:21:43.23 in those areas and so we have 00:21:43.23\00:21:44.70 some footage of that and so we 00:21:44.70\00:21:46.47 wanna look at that right now. 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.00 [TRANSLATOR] I wanna say a big 00:21:49.57\00:21:51.11 thanks to ADRA for coming and 00:21:51.11\00:21:52.57 helping us build our new 00:21:52.57\00:21:53.94 beautiful home. 00:21:53.94\00:21:55.51 In our old house, we suffered 00:21:55.51\00:21:57.08 a lot. 00:21:57.08\00:21:58.35 Life was sad and very 00:21:58.35\00:21:59.65 difficult. 00:21:59.65\00:22:01.05 Our whole family is now 00:22:01.05\00:22:02.28 very happy. 00:22:02.28\00:22:03.72 We don't get sick so much 00:22:03.72\00:22:05.02 anymore. 00:22:05.02\00:22:06.15 Now during the winter, we only 00:22:06.15\00:22:07.49 need three blankets to keep 00:22:07.49\00:22:08.49 warm at night. 00:22:08.49\00:22:10.26 The spot I love the most is my 00:22:10.26\00:22:11.66 beautiful new kitchen. 00:22:11.66\00:22:13.53 I spend a lot more time there 00:22:13.53\00:22:14.93 now because it is so nice. 00:22:14.93\00:22:17.20 I am able to cook our meals 00:22:17.20\00:22:18.37 easier and there is no more 00:22:18.37\00:22:19.70 smoke or ash. 00:22:19.70\00:22:21.27 The wood floor makes it easy 00:22:22.94\00:22:24.31 to keep my house clean. 00:22:24.31\00:22:26.07 When the children climb up on 00:22:26.07\00:22:27.38 the bed, they no longer get 00:22:27.38\00:22:28.88 the bed dirty from the floor. 00:22:28.88\00:22:30.68 I really love my new home. 00:22:31.25\00:22:33.31 I'm so grateful to ADRA. 00:22:33.31\00:22:35.52 [TRANSLATOR] In addition to 00:22:37.72\00:22:39.22 our new warm house, the ADRA 00:22:39.22\00:22:41.26 technician helped us build a 00:22:41.26\00:22:42.92 bathroom. 00:22:42.92\00:22:43.99 We have a small spring above 00:22:44.66\00:22:46.39 our house and we are piping 00:22:46.39\00:22:48.10 the water from the spring to 00:22:48.10\00:22:49.96 our bathroom to give us a 00:22:49.96\00:22:51.43 flush toilet, shower, and sink. 00:22:51.43\00:22:54.30 The most wonderful thing is 00:22:56.54\00:22:58.24 that ADRA installed a passive 00:22:58.24\00:23:00.21 solar heating system in the 00:23:00.21\00:23:01.81 ceiling of our bathroom. 00:23:01.81\00:23:03.61 This means that for the first 00:23:04.48\00:23:06.21 time we have been able to take 00:23:06.21\00:23:08.45 hot showers. 00:23:08.45\00:23:10.49 We are so happy that we can 00:23:11.05\00:23:12.69 enjoy such a luxury. 00:23:12.69\00:23:14.86 We are so grateful that we can 00:23:15.89\00:23:17.83 send our boy to school clean. 00:23:17.83\00:23:20.66 [indecipherable] ADRA! 00:23:20.66\00:23:22.90 [NARRATOR] It has been a 00:23:24.33\00:23:25.57 wonderful experience for me to 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.27 work with the people of the 00:23:27.27\00:23:28.77 Chillca community. 00:23:28.77\00:23:30.17 They are so grateful that 00:23:30.94\00:23:32.47 someone has come to help them. 00:23:32.47\00:23:34.24 They feel recognized 00:23:34.24\00:23:35.68 and noticed. 00:23:35.68\00:23:37.11 They even changed the road 00:23:37.65\00:23:39.45 sign to include "ADRA Peru." 00:23:39.45\00:23:41.88 They formed "ADRA" on the 00:23:41.88\00:23:43.39 mountainside above their 00:23:43.39\00:23:44.89 village and they want ADRA to 00:23:44.89\00:23:47.19 continue to work with them. 00:23:47.19\00:23:49.02 They have asked if ADRA could 00:23:50.03\00:23:51.43 build them a church and 00:23:51.43\00:23:53.56 community centre and bring a 00:23:53.56\00:23:55.13 pastor to come and live with 00:23:55.13\00:23:56.60 them to teach them about 00:23:56.60\00:23:58.13 the Bible. 00:23:58.13\00:23:59.23 They want a place where their 00:23:59.87\00:24:01.37 children can come after school 00:24:01.37\00:24:03.07 and be tutored on their 00:24:03.07\00:24:05.01 schoolwork and learn English. 00:24:05.01\00:24:06.98 We are so thankful for the 00:24:08.24\00:24:10.18 help that we have received 00:24:10.18\00:24:11.75 from Canada and pray that we 00:24:11.75\00:24:13.78 will be able to continue that 00:24:13.78\00:24:15.58 partnership so that we can 00:24:15.58\00:24:17.25 continue the good work that we 00:24:17.25\00:24:18.69 have started in Chillca. 00:24:18.69\00:24:21.52 >> Wow, that's amazing! 00:24:23.79\00:24:25.46 They can have the luxury of 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.10 running water and actually 00:24:27.10\00:24:28.76 send their children to school 00:24:28.76\00:24:29.96 clean. 00:24:29.96\00:24:31.03 >> And the amazing part about 00:24:31.50\00:24:32.70 it is it doesn't use any 00:24:32.70\00:24:33.80 electricity. 00:24:33.80\00:24:35.14 It's all gravity-fed water and 00:24:35.14\00:24:37.77 then there's a solar coil in 00:24:37.77\00:24:39.67 the roof of the washroom which 00:24:39.67\00:24:42.18 heats the water which is where 00:24:42.18\00:24:43.75 they get the heat for their 00:24:43.75\00:24:45.01 shower. 00:24:45.01\00:24:45.91 [RENÉ] Wow. 00:24:46.88\00:24:48.12 So, Steve, do you have any 00:24:48.12\00:24:49.92 closing final closing thoughts 00:24:49.92\00:24:51.72 that you would like to share 00:24:51.72\00:24:53.02 with us? 00:24:53.02\00:24:54.09 >> You know, when I think back 00:24:54.92\00:24:56.19 to the time when we were there 00:24:56.19\00:24:57.89 and just one of our closing 00:24:57.89\00:24:59.49 interviews that we had was 00:24:59.49\00:25:01.13 with the mayor and he was 00:25:01.13\00:25:03.60 literally brought to tears 00:25:03.60\00:25:05.40 because of the difference that 00:25:05.40\00:25:07.07 it made to the kids in 00:25:07.07\00:25:09.40 his community. 00:25:09.40\00:25:11.01 He was telling us about when 00:25:11.01\00:25:12.34 he was growing up, he used to 00:25:12.34\00:25:14.14 have to read by candle light 00:25:14.14\00:25:16.71 to be able to try to do his 00:25:16.71\00:25:18.11 studies and he knocked the 00:25:18.11\00:25:19.61 candle over one time and it 00:25:19.61\00:25:21.22 caught his books on fire so it 00:25:21.22\00:25:24.19 nearly burnt their home down. 00:25:24.19\00:25:26.96 And one thing that we do have 00:25:26.96\00:25:28.76 added in is we have a solar 00:25:28.76\00:25:30.19 panel with a few lights in the 00:25:30.19\00:25:31.73 house as well, so the 00:25:31.73\00:25:33.09 cleanliness, the health, and 00:25:33.09\00:25:34.66 then the ability to be able to 00:25:34.66\00:25:36.16 study at night, those are just 00:25:36.16\00:25:38.20 really life-changing. 00:25:38.20\00:25:39.77 But the man was literally 00:25:39.77\00:25:41.24 crying while we were there 00:25:41.24\00:25:42.70 because of that, yeah. 00:25:42.70\00:25:44.34 >> And what about you, Peggy, 00:25:44.34\00:25:45.77 do you have any closing 00:25:45.77\00:25:46.98 thoughts for us? 00:25:46.98\00:25:48.18 >> Absolutely. 00:25:48.18\00:25:49.48 You know, I read about the 00:25:49.48\00:25:50.71 project, I wrote about it in 00:25:50.71\00:25:52.58 the Adventist Messenger, but 00:25:52.58\00:25:54.45 to actually go and to see the 00:25:54.45\00:25:56.69 home that I wrote about, the 00:25:56.69\00:25:58.35 warm and happy home that I 00:25:58.35\00:25:59.85 wrote about in the flesh was 00:25:59.85\00:26:01.69 just really tremendous and to 00:26:01.69\00:26:04.09 really understand the positive 00:26:04.09\00:26:05.73 impacts that the project is 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.86 making on the lives of people 00:26:07.86\00:26:09.80 was just incredible. 00:26:09.80\00:26:11.23 [MIKE] And before you were 00:26:11.23\00:26:12.57 leaving, there was this lady 00:26:12.57\00:26:13.84 who said a prayer... 00:26:13.84\00:26:15.17 [PEGGY] Yes, yes. 00:26:15.17\00:26:16.47 You know, that was an amazing 00:26:16.47\00:26:17.74 experience because in and 00:26:17.74\00:26:19.37 amongst all of the speeches 00:26:19.37\00:26:21.68 and the band playing and 00:26:21.68\00:26:23.91 everything, there was a moment 00:26:23.91\00:26:25.45 where we were told that this 00:26:25.45\00:26:27.18 woman was going to say a poem 00:26:27.18\00:26:29.68 and as she did, it turned out 00:26:29.68\00:26:32.72 that it wasn't a poem at all, 00:26:32.72\00:26:34.32 it was a prayer. 00:26:34.32\00:26:35.96 And that has just been 00:26:35.96\00:26:37.36 tremendous because it just 00:26:37.36\00:26:38.73 goes to show the gratitude in 00:26:38.73\00:26:40.23 their hearts and the spirit of 00:26:40.23\00:26:41.40 God going before us into these 00:26:41.40\00:26:43.33 projects, changing lives and 00:26:43.33\00:26:44.77 transforming them. 00:26:44.77\00:26:46.03 >> So before we close, let's 00:26:46.03\00:26:47.27 look at that prayer. 00:26:47.27\00:26:48.57 [ALL] Gracias, ADRA! 00:27:25.61\00:27:28.91 << Friends, would you like to 00:27:30.91\00:27:32.65 contribute to ADRA Canada's 00:27:32.65\00:27:34.32 building of warm, healthy 00:27:34.32\00:27:36.15 homes for the people living in 00:27:36.15\00:27:37.92 the remote parts of Peru, high 00:27:37.92\00:27:40.06 up in the Andes Mountains? 00:27:40.06\00:27:41.99 You can share your love by 00:27:43.22\00:27:45.13 partnering with ADRA Canada in 00:27:45.13\00:27:47.23 this wonderful work. 00:27:47.23\00:27:49.16 [MIKE] We want you to 00:27:50.77\00:27:52.30 experience the truth that is 00:27:52.30\00:27:53.54 found in the words of Jesus 00:27:53.54\00:27:55.37 when He said, "It is written, 00:27:55.37\00:27:57.51 "'Man shall not live by bread 00:27:57.51\00:27:59.37 "'alone, but by every word that 00:27:59.37\00:28:01.88 "'proceeds out of the mouth 00:28:01.88\00:28:03.65 of God.'" 00:28:03.65\00:28:05.15 ¤¤ 00:28:05.15\00:28:23.43 (children clapping & singing)
