snow storm and all of a sudden

my 15-year-old son that was

driving was driving in between

vehicles going down the

highway as fast as he could go

and I looked at him and said,

"What are you doing?"

And all he did was point

behind us and so I turned

around and there was a

jack-knifing fuel tanker

flying at us, just careening

down the highway, hitting

everything in its path and

just before it hit our

vehicle, because we couldn't

get away fast enough,

the truck-- our truck lurched

ahead, just like a metre and

I'm so grateful because

if that hadn't happened, my

younger son who was sitting in

the back seat of the quad cab,

And then it hit us and we went

stopped and the dust settled

and the first thing my older

son did was he turned around

to my younger son and said,

"Why were you yelling?"

frustrated, said back,

"I wasn't yelling,"

moment of stress, in that time

try and read and I'd read for

maybe ten minutes and

everything would be blurry.

And during that time I got so

frustrated with myself.

It was about December,

actually, I noticed that I had

lumpy breasts and so I was

getting ready to go back to

work and so at one of those

doctors appointments I said,

"You know, I think I need"

"a mammogram."

And so the doctor sent me for

a mammogram and then it just

went from there.

It is so important for us to

control our thoughts and guard

25 rounds of radiation.

had these intense treatments

and everything's done with the

treatments and so you're

thinking, "I'm probably safe"

"after all those treatments,"

"there's no way the cancer's"

"coming back," but then in

January of 2013 you start to

feel these little lumps

underneath your left armpit.

>> Yes, I had said goodbye to

cancer, but it didn't say

goodbye to me, and so I went

in to see the oncologist early

January, and they were

marble-sized lumps, and so I

said to him, "What is this?"
00:06:36.22\00:06:37.76
And he says, "I don't know,"

"but you need to see the"

"surgeon again."

And so then I went to see my

young surgeon and he said,

"You don't have an"

"ultrasound, you need to go"

"and get an ultrasound and"

And so it was a little bit of

a back-and-forth and then

finally decided, yes, I needed

to do a biopsy and then he

booked me for surgery and a

little bit of reconstruction.

After the surgery, I went to

see him, the young surgeon

again, and he said to me,

"You know, we didn't get all"

"the cancer."

And so I went in to the

medical oncologist and he said

to me, "I need you to go meet"

"Dr. Temple, he's experienced"

"and he says he may take you"

"as a patient, but you have"

"to go meet him."

And so I quickly went across

and went up to the Women's

Health Centre in the area

where the breast cancer clinic

is there and Dr. Temple was

waiting for me and he saw me
00:07:44.73\00:07:46.86
and he was wearing the
00:07:46.86\00:07:48.43
goofiest hat I've ever seen,
00:07:48.43\00:07:50.47
but he decided that I was a
00:07:50.47\00:07:53.57
good candidate for another
00:07:53.57\00:07:55.27
surgery, he decided that I had
00:07:55.27\00:07:57.07
enough spunk in me that he
00:07:57.07\00:07:58.54
wanted to continue my
00:07:58.54\00:07:59.84
treatment.
00:07:59.84\00:08:01.41
He, however, was leaving to go
00:08:01.41\00:08:03.21
on a holiday to China for
00:08:03.21\00:08:04.71
three weeks and the surgery
00:08:04.71\00:08:05.85
was gonna be booked
00:08:05.85\00:08:06.85
after that.
00:08:06.85\00:08:08.25
In the meantime, I was sent to
00:08:08.25\00:08:10.42
see a radiologist and she told
00:08:10.42\00:08:13.52
me she was stopping all
00:08:13.52\00:08:15.19
treatment altogether and that
00:08:15.19\00:08:17.03
I had six months to live and
00:08:17.03\00:08:18.73
she wanted to take over my
00:08:18.73\00:08:20.20
file and coach me through the
00:08:20.20\00:08:21.00
next six months of
00:08:21.00\00:08:22.36
palliative care.
00:08:22.36\00:08:23.37
I was not happy.

And fortunately I had an

appointment with my plastic

surgeon who was gonna do the

reconstruction again the day

after that and she happened to

be the daughter of Dr. Temple.

And she said to me, "Don't"

"listen to that radiologist,"

"if there was no hope, my dad"

"would not be doing surgery"

"and no one tells my dad"

"what to do."

And I loved it, I loved that

there was someone with

experience and that who wanted

to stick up for me and

continue my treatment.

And then, so I had that

surgery and reconstruction and

I thought things were going

good, but then in 2014, as per

my pattern that continued,

the cancer was back.

And then in, again in 2015, it

was back again and so surgery

and then I started chemo again

and the oncologist that

happened to see me one day

said to me, "I don't think"

And then I had an appointment

to see another medical

radiologist and so I went to

see him and he told me,

And I was like, "OK..."

quiet and I prayed for a while

bumped up and the surgeon was

talking to the anaesthetist and

they were discussing things

and I perked up and I said,

"Excuse me, but we"

And everyone froze.

That busy, bustling operating

room became silent.

And the surgeon stopped and he

looked at me and he said,

The PET scan that I'd had

earlier indicated that the

cancer was in my shoulder and

they thought my ribs as well.

But after a 7-hour surgery,

I still had all my ribs.

It was a miracle.
