Albersworth was 00:00:06.33\00:00:07.77 diagnosed with bilateral 00:00:07.77\00:00:09.67 breast cancer. 00:00:09.67\00:00:11.01 >> After her intense 00:00:11.01\00:00:12.31 treatment, she thought she had 00:00:12.31\00:00:13.94 beat it, but a second 00:00:13.94\00:00:15.54 diagnosis came in 2013. 00:00:15.54\00:00:19.41 >> From 2014 to February 2017, 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.45 Holly was diagnosed with 00:00:22.45\00:00:24.05 cancer five more times. 00:00:24.05\00:00:26.55 >> For her seventh and final 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.46 diagnosis, she had her left 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.23 arm amputated. 00:00:37.13\00:00:38.93 But today Holly is much more 00:00:38.93\00:00:41.30 than a cancer survivor. 00:00:41.30\00:00:43.20 >> Holly Albersworth is a 00:00:43.20\00:00:44.94 child of God, a loving 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.31 Thank you for joining us here 00:01:50.31\00:01:51.77 in Airdrie, Alberta where we 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.78 are visiting with Holly 00:01:53.78\00:01:55.58 Albersworth, whose story, from 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.78 the first time we heard it, 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.42 we have just about repeated it 00:02:00.42\00:02:01.78 to just about everyone we meet 00:02:01.78\00:02:03.39 because it strengthens our 00:02:03.39\00:02:05.25 faith so much and I'm sure 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.29 it'll do the same for you. 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.36 >> So, Holly, thank you so 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.83 much for joining us on 00:02:10.83\00:02:12.36 It Is Written Canada today, 00:02:12.36\00:02:13.90 we're so glad that you're 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.23 here today with us. 00:02:15.23\00:02:17.03 >> Thank you, I'm very happy 00:02:17.03\00:02:18.10 to be here as well. 00:02:18.10\00:02:19.60 >> So, Holly, I want you to 00:02:19.60\00:02:21.24 take us back a year before 00:02:21.24\00:02:23.20 your first diagnosis, you had 00:02:23.20\00:02:24.77 a traumatic experience. 00:02:24.77\00:02:26.34 You wanna tell us about that? 00:02:26.34\00:02:27.98 >> Certainly. 00:02:27.98\00:02:29.24 In April 2010, my sons and 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.45 I were coming back to Airdrie 00:02:31.45\00:02:33.72 on the QE2 and it had been a 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.98 snow storm and all of a sudden 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.99 my 15-year-old son that was 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.62 driving was driving in between 00:02:40.62\00:02:42.12 vehicles going down the 00:02:42.12\00:02:43.93 highway as fast as he could go 00:02:43.93\00:02:45.59 and I looked at him and said, 00:02:45.59\00:02:46.59 "What are you doing?" 00:02:46.59\00:02:47.93 And all he did was point 00:02:47.93\00:02:49.23 behind us and so I turned 00:02:49.23\00:02:50.33 around and there was a 00:02:50.33\00:02:51.53 jack-knifing fuel tanker 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.20 flying at us, just careening 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.00 down the highway, hitting 00:02:55.00\00:02:56.07 everything in its path and 00:02:56.07\00:02:58.17 just before it hit our 00:02:58.17\00:02:59.44 vehicle, because we couldn't 00:02:59.44\00:03:00.91 get away fast enough, 00:03:00.91\00:03:03.75 the truck-- our truck lurched 00:03:03.75\00:03:05.35 ahead, just like a metre and 00:03:05.35\00:03:07.72 I'm so grateful because 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.68 if that hadn't happened, my 00:03:09.68\00:03:11.62 younger son who was sitting in 00:03:11.62\00:03:13.25 the back seat of the quad cab, 00:03:13.25\00:03:14.86 would have been squished. 00:03:14.86\00:03:16.12 And then it hit us and we went 00:03:16.12\00:03:17.53 spinning and flying down the 00:03:17.53\00:03:19.13 ditch, probably the length of 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.60 a football field and we 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.13 stopped and the dust settled 00:03:22.13\00:03:23.73 and the first thing my older 00:03:23.73\00:03:24.90 son did was he turned around 00:03:24.90\00:03:26.13 to my younger son and said, 00:03:26.13\00:03:27.47 "Why were you yelling?" 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.47 And my younger son, 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.27 frustrated, said back, 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.27 "I wasn't yelling," 00:03:33.27\00:03:34.54 "I was praying!" 00:03:34.54\00:03:36.95 And I am so grateful, in that 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.51 moment of stress, in that time 00:03:38.51\00:03:40.45 period that that was 00:03:40.45\00:03:43.08 happening, that he had the 00:03:43.08\00:03:45.12 confidence to reach out 00:03:45.12\00:03:46.19 to God. 00:03:46.19\00:03:47.36 Because of God, 00:03:47.36\00:03:48.99 my family was alive. 00:03:48.99\00:03:51.13 >> So what were the injuries 00:03:51.13\00:03:53.19 that you sustained? 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.13 I had a concussion and I 00:03:55.13\00:03:57.00 didn't realize it at first, 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.90 but I had screaming headaches, 00:03:58.90\00:04:01.97 I had dizzy spells, I would 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.01 try and read and I'd read for 00:04:04.01\00:04:05.77 maybe ten minutes and 00:04:05.77\00:04:07.28 everything would be blurry. 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.91 And during that time I got so 00:04:09.91\00:04:11.48 frustrated with myself. 00:04:11.48\00:04:13.15 It was about December, 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.62 actually, I noticed that I had 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.59 lumpy breasts and so I was 00:04:17.59\00:04:20.52 getting ready to go back to 00:04:20.52\00:04:21.66 work and so at one of those 00:04:21.66\00:04:22.89 doctors appointments I said, 00:04:22.89\00:04:24.23 "You know, I think I need" 00:04:24.23\00:04:25.33 "a mammogram." 00:04:25.33\00:04:26.70 And so the doctor sent me for 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.16 a mammogram and then it just 00:04:28.16\00:04:31.17 went from there. 00:04:31.17\00:04:32.87 >> So, Holly, do you think 00:04:32.87\00:04:34.67 that the stress and all the 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.84 traumatic experience that you 00:04:36.84\00:04:38.71 had a year before had anything 00:04:38.71\00:04:40.84 to do with your first 00:04:40.84\00:04:42.64 diagnosis of your bilateral 00:04:42.64\00:04:45.21 cancer? 00:04:45.21\00:04:46.88 >> One hundred percent. 00:04:46.88\00:04:48.52 It is so important for us to 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.09 control our thoughts and guard 00:04:50.09\00:04:51.99 our thoughts because if we get 00:04:51.99\00:04:54.72 under too much stress or 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.09 things are too negative in our 00:04:56.09\00:04:57.63 lives, our immune systems are 00:04:57.63\00:04:59.43 affected very negatively. 00:04:59.43\00:05:01.46 And so it's so important just 00:05:01.46\00:05:02.63 to give our problems to God 00:05:02.63\00:05:04.77 because even though things are 00:05:04.77\00:05:06.10 happening in this world that 00:05:06.10\00:05:07.34 we don't understand and things 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.00 are confusing and stressful, 00:05:09.00\00:05:10.94 we just need to trust that God 00:05:10.94\00:05:12.87 has a plan and that's why I 00:05:12.87\00:05:15.01 love Romans 8:28, you know, 00:05:15.01\00:05:17.65 that everything happens for 00:05:17.65\00:05:19.05 the good of those who love. 00:05:19.05\00:05:20.32 God, for those who are called 00:05:20.32\00:05:21.45 to His purpose. 00:05:21.45\00:05:22.82 And that's a verse that I 00:05:22.82\00:05:24.02 cling to every day because 00:05:24.02\00:05:26.52 every day, things can happen 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.62 and life is an adventure. 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.59 >> So how many kinds of 00:05:30.59\00:05:31.96 treatments, what kind of 00:05:31.96\00:05:33.29 treatments did you have from 00:05:33.29\00:05:35.13 the time that you were first 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.10 diagnosed with breast cancer? 00:05:37.10\00:05:40.00 >> From the time I met my 00:05:40.00\00:05:41.20 oncologist, I was given a week 00:05:41.20\00:05:43.24 before we started treatments. 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.31 We did six months of very 00:05:45.31\00:05:46.98 aggressive chemo and then from 00:05:46.98\00:05:49.08 there, I had a bilateral 00:05:49.08\00:05:51.68 mastectomy and lymph nodes 00:05:51.68\00:05:53.98 removed, and after that, I had 00:05:53.98\00:05:57.09 25 rounds of radiation. 00:05:57.09\00:05:59.22 [Rene] So, Holly, you've just 00:06:00.82\00:06:02.12 had these intense treatments 00:06:02.12\00:06:04.76 and everything's done with the 00:06:04.76\00:06:06.73 treatments and so you're 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.23 thinking, "I'm probably safe" 00:06:08.23\00:06:09.86 "after all those treatments," 00:06:09.86\00:06:11.53 "there's no way the cancer's" 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.67 "coming back," but then in 00:06:13.67\00:06:15.84 January of 2013 you start to 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.07 feel these little lumps 00:06:18.07\00:06:19.87 underneath your left armpit. 00:06:19.87\00:06:21.51 Can you tell us what happened 00:06:21.51\00:06:23.04 from there, Holly? 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.21 >> Yes, I had said goodbye to 00:06:25.61\00:06:27.55 cancer, but it didn't say 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.95 goodbye to me, and so I went 00:06:28.95\00:06:31.05 in to see the oncologist early 00:06:31.05\00:06:32.99 January, and they were 00:06:32.99\00:06:34.52 marble-sized lumps, and so I 00:06:34.52\00:06:36.22 said to him, "What is this?" 00:06:36.22\00:06:37.76 And he says, "I don't know," 00:06:37.76\00:06:38.99 "but you need to see the" 00:06:38.99\00:06:39.66 "surgeon again." 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.20 And so then I went to see my 00:06:41.20\00:06:43.40 young surgeon and he said, 00:06:43.40\00:06:44.57 "You don't have an" 00:06:44.57\00:06:45.77 "ultrasound, you need to go" 00:06:45.77\00:06:46.84 "and get an ultrasound and" 00:06:46.84\00:06:47.77 "then come back and see me." 00:06:47.77\00:06:49.00 And so it was a little bit of 00:06:49.00\00:06:49.87 a back-and-forth and then 00:06:49.87\00:06:50.97 finally decided, yes, I needed 00:06:50.97\00:06:52.41 to do a biopsy and then he 00:06:52.41\00:06:53.61 booked me for surgery and a 00:06:53.61\00:06:54.88 little bit of reconstruction. 00:06:54.88\00:06:55.81 After the surgery, I went to 00:06:57.85\00:07:00.18 see him, the young surgeon 00:07:00.18\00:07:03.42 again, and he said to me, 00:07:03.42\00:07:05.89 "You know, we didn't get all" 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.49 "the cancer." 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.49 "You need to go right now to" 00:07:10.49\00:07:11.83 "see... to the medical" 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.60 "oncologist's office and he's" 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.20 "gonna send you to see" 00:07:15.20\00:07:16.53 "another surgeon." 00:07:16.53\00:07:18.43 And so I went in to the 00:07:18.43\00:07:19.83 medical oncologist and he said 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.14 to me, "I need you to go meet" 00:07:21.14\00:07:22.47 "Dr. Temple, he's experienced" 00:07:22.47\00:07:25.77 "and he says he may take you" 00:07:25.77\00:07:27.38 "as a patient, but you have" 00:07:27.38\00:07:28.58 "to go meet him." 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.11 "You need to run across the" 00:07:30.11\00:07:31.38 "parking lot to the Women's." 00:07:31.38\00:07:32.45 "Health Centre and run" 00:07:32.45\00:07:33.95 "quickly because he's waiting" 00:07:33.95\00:07:34.88 "for you." 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.05 And so I quickly went across 00:07:36.05\00:07:38.92 and went up to the Women's 00:07:38.92\00:07:40.56 Health Centre in the area 00:07:40.56\00:07:41.62 where the breast cancer clinic 00:07:41.62\00:07:42.92 is there and Dr. Temple was 00:07:42.92\00:07:44.73 waiting for me and he saw me 00:07:44.73\00:07:46.86 and he was wearing the 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.43 goofiest hat I've ever seen, 00:07:48.43\00:07:50.47 but he decided that I was a 00:07:50.47\00:07:53.57 good candidate for another 00:07:53.57\00:07:55.27 surgery, he decided that I had 00:07:55.27\00:07:57.07 enough spunk in me that he 00:07:57.07\00:07:58.54 wanted to continue my 00:07:58.54\00:07:59.84 treatment. 00:07:59.84\00:08:01.41 He, however, was leaving to go 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.21 on a holiday to China for 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.71 three weeks and the surgery 00:08:04.71\00:08:05.85 was gonna be booked 00:08:05.85\00:08:06.85 after that. 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.25 In the meantime, I was sent to 00:08:08.25\00:08:10.42 see a radiologist and she told 00:08:10.42\00:08:13.52 me she was stopping all 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.19 treatment altogether and that 00:08:15.19\00:08:17.03 I had six months to live and 00:08:17.03\00:08:18.73 she wanted to take over my 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.20 file and coach me through the 00:08:20.20\00:08:21.00 next six months of 00:08:21.00\00:08:22.36 palliative care. 00:08:22.36\00:08:23.37 I was not happy. 00:08:24.80\00:08:25.57 And fortunately I had an 00:08:27.47\00:08:28.84 appointment with my plastic 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.17 surgeon who was gonna do the 00:08:30.17\00:08:31.87 reconstruction again the day 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.78 after that and she happened to 00:08:33.78\00:08:35.41 be the daughter of Dr. Temple. 00:08:35.41\00:08:38.38 And she said to me, "Don't" 00:08:38.38\00:08:40.68 "listen to that radiologist," 00:08:40.68\00:08:42.78 "if there was no hope, my dad" 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.29 "would not be doing surgery" 00:08:45.29\00:08:48.16 "and no one tells my dad" 00:08:48.16\00:08:49.66 "what to do." 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.19 And I loved it, I loved that 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.63 there was someone with 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.13 experience and that who wanted 00:08:54.13\00:08:56.16 to stick up for me and 00:08:56.16\00:08:57.67 continue my treatment. 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.17 >> Mm-mm, so hopeful. 00:08:59.17\00:09:00.84 >> That's right, that's right. 00:09:00.84\00:09:02.24 And then, so I had that 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.41 surgery and reconstruction and 00:09:04.41\00:09:05.87 I thought things were going 00:09:05.87\00:09:07.28 good, but then in 2014, as per 00:09:07.28\00:09:09.84 my pattern that continued, 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.65 the cancer was back. 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.68 And then in, again in 2015, it 00:09:15.68\00:09:19.42 was back again and so surgery 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.46 chemo, and then 2015, surgery 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.43 and then I started chemo again 00:09:24.43\00:09:27.03 and the oncologist that 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.70 happened to see me one day 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.20 said to me, "I don't think" 00:09:30.20\00:09:31.53 "this chemo's gonna work for" 00:09:31.53\00:09:32.70 "you," and it kinda horrified 00:09:32.70\00:09:34.10 me a little bit. 00:09:34.10\00:09:35.84 And then I had an appointment 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.17 to see another medical 00:09:37.17\00:09:39.01 radiologist and so I went to 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.41 the Tom Baker Cancer Centre to 00:09:41.41\00:09:42.98 see him and he told me, 00:09:42.98\00:09:45.75 "You're gonna have a very" 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.12 "painful and imminent death." 00:09:47.12\00:09:49.38 And I was like, "OK..." 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.62 I wasn't sure what to do with 00:09:51.62\00:09:52.79 that so I went home and it was 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.62 quiet and I prayed for a while 00:09:54.62\00:09:55.62 and I started calling my 00:09:55.62\00:09:56.93 friends from church and they 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.39 told me, "Holly, you've" 00:09:58.39\00:09:59.83 "gotta go to Mexico, you've" 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.13 "gotta find a different" 00:10:01.13\00:10:02.36 "perspective, you've gotta" 00:10:02.36\00:10:03.23 "find someone that will" 00:10:03.23\00:10:04.40 "actually help you." 00:10:04.40\00:10:05.83 >> So, Holly, on the good 00:10:05.83\00:10:07.50 advice of your good friends, 00:10:07.50\00:10:09.44 you go down to the Sanoviv 00:10:09.44\00:10:11.54 Cancer Treatment Centre in 00:10:11.54\00:10:12.94 Rosarito, Mexico. 00:10:12.94\00:10:14.68 Tell us about that experience 00:10:14.68\00:10:15.48 for you. 00:10:15.48\00:10:16.85 >> It was wonderful and it was 00:10:16.85\00:10:18.38 a time of growth for me 00:10:18.38\00:10:19.98 because I learned that my 00:10:19.98\00:10:22.08 immune system was very 00:10:22.08\00:10:23.49 important to beating cancer, 00:10:23.49\00:10:25.15 just like any other infection, 00:10:25.15\00:10:26.69 your immune system is 00:10:26.69\00:10:27.72 paramount and so it's 00:10:27.72\00:10:28.92 important to build your immune 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.43 system, which includes 00:10:30.43\00:10:31.63 positive thoughts and green 00:10:31.63\00:10:32.96 juice and all kinds of healthy 00:10:32.96\00:10:34.46 things that you can put into 00:10:34.46\00:10:35.60 your body to reinforce and 00:10:35.60\00:10:37.43 build up your immunity. 00:10:37.43\00:10:39.47 >> So what did the doctors 00:10:39.47\00:10:40.84 tell you down there? 00:10:40.84\00:10:42.24 >> Oh, I remember my first 00:10:42.24\00:10:43.41 meeting with Dr. Armony. 00:10:43.41\00:10:45.37 She told-- I was-- I think I 00:10:45.37\00:10:47.54 was shivering, like I was just 00:10:47.54\00:10:49.11 nervous, like what is this 00:10:49.11\00:10:50.58 doctor gonna tell me? 00:10:50.58\00:10:51.85 I was nervous about what she 00:10:51.85\00:10:52.98 was gonna say about my 00:10:52.98\00:10:54.32 prognosis, like, I just wanted 00:10:54.32\00:10:55.95 hope, I wanted some doctor to 00:10:55.95\00:10:57.49 give me hope and she said to 00:10:57.49\00:10:59.39 me, "Stop running from the" 00:10:59.39\00:11:00.86 "monster," and that was huge 00:11:00.86\00:11:04.79 because being afraid, 00:11:04.79\00:11:06.59 living in fear, lowers your 00:11:06.59\00:11:08.06 immune system. 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.76 And I had another doctor say 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.00 to me, "How old do you think" 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.50 "you wanna live to?" 00:11:12.50\00:11:14.17 And I kinda thought for a 00:11:14.17\00:11:15.14 moment and I said, 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.30 "How about 88?" 00:11:16.30\00:11:17.64 And he said, "That's a good" 00:11:17.64\00:11:18.71 "goal, let's go for it." 00:11:18.71\00:11:19.81 >> So, Holly, how was this 00:11:21.24\00:11:22.84 experience a turning point in 00:11:22.84\00:11:24.25 your life? 00:11:24.25\00:11:26.35 >> It was a mind shift because 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.92 I kind of learned that I 00:11:28.92\00:11:31.09 didn't have to listen to 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.25 medical doctors, that there 00:11:32.25\00:11:33.56 were things I could do. 00:11:33.56\00:11:35.29 Some things that we did down 00:11:35.29\00:11:36.79 there were the hyperbaric 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.56 oxygen therapy, I learned that 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.23 chiropractic's very good for 00:11:40.23\00:11:41.76 your immune system, and as 00:11:41.76\00:11:44.07 well as we had a spa treatment 00:11:44.07\00:11:46.07 every day, it was a wonderful 00:11:46.07\00:11:47.57 experience with gourmet meals 00:11:47.57\00:11:49.04 cooked for each meal and 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.94 someone doing my laundry 00:11:50.94\00:11:52.31 (laughs) and living in a 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.68 beautiful facility. 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.61 >> So this was a very positive 00:11:55.61\00:11:56.68 experience for you? 00:11:56.68\00:11:58.15 >> Yes, it was a very good 00:11:58.15\00:11:59.18 experience and to God 00:11:59.18\00:12:00.32 be the glory. 00:12:00.32\00:12:01.28 ¤¤ 00:12:04.19\00:12:22.14 ¤To God be the 00:16:06.49\00:16:07.76 agree with the first line of 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.03 that song, "To God be the" 00:16:09.03\00:16:10.90 "glory, great things He has" 00:16:10.90\00:16:12.57 "done," because He's done 00:16:12.57\00:16:13.60 great things for you in 00:16:13.60\00:16:14.40 your life. 00:16:14.40\00:16:15.40 >> Amen, but the best is 00:16:15.40\00:16:17.07 yet to come. 00:16:17.07\00:16:18.37 >> What, what do you mean the 00:16:18.37\00:16:20.21 best is yet to come? 00:16:20.21\00:16:22.51 >> It's a long story. (laughs) 00:16:22.51\00:16:25.28 I came back from Mexico and, 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.62 again, I was diagnosed with 00:16:27.62\00:16:29.35 can... another tumour, which I 00:16:29.35\00:16:31.85 had surgery and they removed. 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.59 I think that's when they took 00:16:34.59\00:16:35.96 my tricep and so I had to 00:16:35.96\00:16:37.56 relearn to use my arm again 00:16:37.56\00:16:40.70 and so then, of course, again 00:16:40.70\00:16:42.60 I had another chemo and then 00:16:42.60\00:16:44.80 in 2016 I, once again, was 00:16:44.80\00:16:47.37 diagnosed with another tumour 00:16:47.37\00:16:49.24 and so I had surgery again and 00:16:49.24\00:16:51.47 then they gave me more chemo 00:16:51.47\00:16:54.78 and it was palliative chemo 00:16:54.78\00:16:59.18 and I had spent a lot of time 00:16:59.18\00:17:01.08 praying and begging God and 00:17:01.08\00:17:03.89 saying, "Lord, I know You can" 00:17:03.89\00:17:05.72 "heal me right now." 00:17:05.72\00:17:09.49 "Why aren't You healing me?" 00:17:09.49\00:17:12.03 And one night I went to bed 00:17:12.03\00:17:15.16 and I had a dream and in that 00:17:15.16\00:17:16.90 dream an angel came to me and 00:17:16.90\00:17:18.33 said, "You're gonna have" 00:17:18.33\00:17:19.87 "cancer one more time" 00:17:19.87\00:17:21.70 "and then you will be OK." 00:17:21.70\00:17:24.14 And I sat up in bed, 00:17:24.14\00:17:26.31 "Get back here, what does" 00:17:26.31\00:17:27.64 "'OK' mean? I wanna know and" 00:17:27.64\00:17:29.28 "God can heal me right now," 00:17:29.28\00:17:30.98 "I don't need to have cancer" 00:17:30.98\00:17:32.55 "one more time!" 00:17:32.55\00:17:34.18 And that was about November, 00:17:36.48\00:17:38.22 as I said, and then January I 00:17:38.22\00:17:41.19 had my checkup. 00:17:41.19\00:17:42.49 So I had my CT scan and then 00:17:42.49\00:17:43.79 the results come back and I 00:17:43.79\00:17:44.86 went to see my medical 00:17:44.86\00:17:46.13 oncology team and they said, 00:17:46.13\00:17:47.60 "Oh, such good news, there's" 00:17:47.60\00:17:49.03 "no cancer to be found." 00:17:49.03\00:17:51.17 Two or three weeks later, I 00:17:51.17\00:17:53.40 started noticing that there 00:17:53.40\00:17:54.67 was quite a bit of pain in my 00:17:54.67\00:17:55.80 left shoulder and so I 00:17:55.80\00:17:56.91 thought, "I'd better go" 00:17:56.91\00:17:57.81 "see my surgeon." 00:17:57.81\00:17:58.67 "Maybe I just need some" 00:17:58.67\00:17:59.67 "physio therapy and that" 00:17:59.67\00:18:00.94 "would be good, right?" 00:18:00.94\00:18:03.14 And so I went to see my 00:18:03.14\00:18:04.48 surgeon and he pulled up the 00:18:04.48\00:18:07.52 CT scan and I said, 00:18:07.52\00:18:09.55 "Well, the radiologist said" 00:18:09.55\00:18:10.69 "it was clean." 00:18:10.69\00:18:12.02 And he says, "Yes, but if we" 00:18:12.02\00:18:13.15 "actually look at the scan," 00:18:13.15\00:18:14.56 "look here," and he says, 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.32 "You're in trouble." 00:18:16.32\00:18:18.39 And he kinda told me that I 00:18:18.39\00:18:19.89 needed to get my head around 00:18:19.89\00:18:21.23 the fact that I may need an 00:18:21.23\00:18:22.40 amputation. 00:18:22.40\00:18:23.26 He wanted my husband to come 00:18:25.70\00:18:26.70 to the next appointment, 00:18:26.70\00:18:28.14 'cause I had so many medical 00:18:28.14\00:18:29.30 appointments that Ted didn't 00:18:29.30\00:18:30.47 come to all of them 'cause he 00:18:30.47\00:18:31.74 needed to go to work or 00:18:31.74\00:18:33.41 someone needed to go to work. 00:18:33.41\00:18:35.18 And so the next week he came 00:18:35.18\00:18:36.85 to see the surgeon with me as 00:18:36.85\00:18:39.35 support and they gave me four 00:18:39.35\00:18:41.35 choices and the first choice 00:18:41.35\00:18:44.85 was just to leave it and let 00:18:44.85\00:18:46.69 the cancer progress and just 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.19 live out my palliative life. 00:18:49.19\00:18:52.46 The second choice was to do 00:18:52.46\00:18:54.76 some surgery, take as much 00:18:54.76\00:18:56.16 cancer as they could, but 00:18:56.16\00:18:58.07 still leave the arm intact as 00:18:58.07\00:18:59.37 much as they could and then 00:18:59.37\00:19:01.10 maybe there was some chemo. 00:19:01.10\00:19:02.17 The third choice, I don't 00:19:03.64\00:19:04.81 really remember, but it 00:19:04.81\00:19:06.04 couldn't have been a good 00:19:06.04\00:19:07.18 choice otherwise I would have 00:19:07.18\00:19:08.41 remembered and the fourth 00:19:08.41\00:19:09.94 choice was, he said, "We're" 00:19:09.94\00:19:12.25 "going to dust off the power" 00:19:12.25\00:19:13.58 "tools and take your arm" 00:19:13.58\00:19:16.05 "and your shoulder." 00:19:16.05\00:19:17.12 And I looked over at my 00:19:19.45\00:19:20.62 husband and he was looking 00:19:20.62\00:19:22.09 very sad and Dr. Temple, he 00:19:22.09\00:19:25.69 was on sabbatical then, but he 00:19:25.69\00:19:27.03 came into that appointment as 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.36 well so there was more than 00:19:28.36\00:19:29.90 one surgeon there and he 00:19:29.90\00:19:31.57 pulled the Kleenex box out and 00:19:31.57\00:19:33.40 handed me some Kleenex and 00:19:33.40\00:19:34.70 said, "Don't be so tough." 00:19:34.70\00:19:38.11 And I said, "Which one" 00:19:38.11\00:19:40.91 "gives me the best chance?" 00:19:40.91\00:19:42.51 "I want to live." 00:19:42.51\00:19:44.75 And he said, "The amputation." 00:19:44.75\00:19:47.48 And so that's what we booked, 00:19:47.48\00:19:49.55 the surgery for April 5th 00:19:49.55\00:19:50.79 of 2017. 00:19:50.79\00:19:53.22 >> Now you know that your arm 00:19:53.22\00:19:54.96 is going to be removed, 00:19:54.96\00:19:56.96 what was that like? 00:19:56.96\00:19:57.96 >> Um, you know what, I just 00:20:00.56\00:20:02.20 had the joy of being done with 00:20:02.20\00:20:03.93 cancer and the hope of being 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.70 done with cancer. 00:20:05.70\00:20:06.97 And I had the angel story 00:20:06.97\00:20:08.20 still in the back of my mind, 00:20:08.20\00:20:09.37 one more time 00:20:09.37\00:20:10.54 and then I would be OK. 00:20:10.54\00:20:11.97 >> Did you share that with 00:20:11.97\00:20:12.74 anyone else? 00:20:12.74\00:20:13.44 >> Not yet. 00:20:13.44\00:20:14.48 >> Why not? 00:20:14.48\00:20:15.81 >> Because I didn't want them 00:20:15.81\00:20:17.11 to think I was crazy! (laughs) 00:20:17.11\00:20:19.11 Now I'm OK with it, years 00:20:19.11\00:20:20.58 later I'm OK sharing that 00:20:20.58\00:20:21.82 story because it's pretty 00:20:21.82\00:20:23.12 remarkable and the compassion 00:20:23.12\00:20:25.22 that God had on me, allowing 00:20:25.22\00:20:27.66 me to have that dream because 00:20:27.66\00:20:31.13 after you've had cancer and so 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.03 many recurrences, every lump, 00:20:33.03\00:20:35.10 bump, ache, can send you into 00:20:35.10\00:20:37.03 a tizzy because you don't 00:20:37.03\00:20:39.17 know, is it back? 00:20:39.17\00:20:40.94 But I've got that dream. 00:20:40.94\00:20:43.67 God's with me and He's taking 00:20:43.67\00:20:44.81 care of me. 00:20:44.81\00:20:46.04 >> So tell us about the 00:20:46.04\00:20:47.28 amputation surgery. 00:20:47.28\00:20:49.11 >> Ah, yes, I remember being 00:20:50.45\00:20:51.85 wheeled into the operating 00:20:51.85\00:20:53.11 room and the lights were super 00:20:53.11\00:20:54.95 bright and there were so many 00:20:54.95\00:20:56.58 people, there was like a dozen 00:20:56.58\00:20:57.95 people running around, trying 00:20:57.95\00:20:59.52 to get things ready because 00:20:59.52\00:21:00.62 the surgery time had been 00:21:00.62\00:21:01.99 bumped up and the surgeon was 00:21:01.99\00:21:05.09 talking to the anaesthetist and 00:21:05.09\00:21:06.96 they were discussing things 00:21:06.96\00:21:08.33 and I perked up and I said, 00:21:08.33\00:21:09.93 "Excuse me, but we" 00:21:09.93\00:21:11.37 "need to pray!" 00:21:11.37\00:21:13.60 And everyone froze. 00:21:13.60\00:21:16.44 That busy, bustling operating 00:21:16.44\00:21:18.24 room became silent. 00:21:18.24\00:21:20.78 And the surgeon stopped and he 00:21:20.78\00:21:22.34 looked at me and he said, 00:21:22.34\00:21:23.85 "Do you want me to pray?" 00:21:23.85\00:21:26.15 And I said, "No, I'll pray!" 00:21:26.15\00:21:28.88 And I-- so I prayed that God 00:21:28.88\00:21:31.15 would guide those surgeons' 00:21:31.15\00:21:32.59 hands and that through the 00:21:32.59\00:21:34.86 glory of God those margins 00:21:34.86\00:21:37.13 would be clean and all the 00:21:37.13\00:21:39.16 cancer would be gone and the 00:21:39.16\00:21:41.53 surgery would go well. 00:21:41.53\00:21:43.23 The PET scan that I'd had 00:21:43.23\00:21:44.83 earlier indicated that the 00:21:44.83\00:21:46.40 cancer was in my shoulder and 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.54 they thought my ribs as well. 00:21:48.54\00:21:50.57 But after a 7-hour surgery, 00:21:50.57\00:21:52.37 I still had all my ribs. 00:21:52.37\00:21:54.34 It was a miracle. 00:21:54.34\00:21:55.11 And after that they-- I was in 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.82 the hospital for nine days in 00:22:00.82\00:22:02.42 recovery, lots of family came 00:22:02.42\00:22:04.05 to see me and church members 00:22:04.05\00:22:05.45 as well. 00:22:05.45\00:22:06.86 I remember one friend from 00:22:06.86\00:22:08.16 church coming and she wanted 00:22:08.16\00:22:09.72 to see the surgery where 00:22:09.72\00:22:11.36 they'd done the incision and I 00:22:11.36\00:22:12.83 was like, "Really?" 00:22:12.83\00:22:14.10 He says, "Yes, I'm fascinated" 00:22:14.10\00:22:15.00 "by those kinds of things." 00:22:15.00\00:22:16.67 And so I showed her and she 00:22:16.67\00:22:18.33 told me it was beautiful 00:22:18.33\00:22:20.07 and it still makes me kinda 00:22:20.07\00:22:21.47 tear up because losing your 00:22:21.47\00:22:23.51 arm is a little bit traumatic 00:22:23.51\00:22:24.74 even though it meant I was 00:22:24.74\00:22:25.91 cancer-free, I was so happy to 00:22:25.91\00:22:27.11 walk away from cancer, 00:22:27.11\00:22:28.34 but just to be told that an 00:22:30.38\00:22:32.18 amputation is beautiful is 00:22:32.18\00:22:33.82 a gift as well. 00:22:33.82\00:22:37.12 >> Holly, I often wonder how, 00:22:37.12\00:22:41.36 you're a Christian, how did 00:22:41.36\00:22:43.49 you cope through this whole 00:22:43.49\00:22:45.46 journey, like, how did God 00:22:45.46\00:22:47.83 help you, because you had 00:22:47.83\00:22:49.43 cancer for seven times and 00:22:49.43\00:22:51.67 then the seventh and final 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.17 time, you end up having an 00:22:53.17\00:22:55.20 amputation, how did you cope 00:22:55.20\00:22:58.71 through this cancer journey? 00:22:58.71\00:23:00.88 >> This was actually surgery 00:23:00.88\00:23:02.44 eight, but I held onto God 00:23:02.44\00:23:06.75 with all my strength, just 00:23:06.75\00:23:08.28 like Jacob wrestled with the 00:23:08.28\00:23:09.75 angel, that's how I envisioned 00:23:09.75\00:23:11.45 myself wrestling with God. 00:23:11.45\00:23:13.69 Or when the lady with the flow 00:23:13.69\00:23:16.86 of blood wanted to touch 00:23:16.86\00:23:18.46 Christ's hem, I would beg, 00:23:18.46\00:23:19.93 "Lord, please just let me" 00:23:19.93\00:23:21.20 "touch Your hem" 00:23:21.20\00:23:22.90 "because I know that I can" 00:23:22.90\00:23:24.20 "be healed by You." 00:23:24.20\00:23:26.13 And it's through the grace of 00:23:26.13\00:23:27.24 God that I am alive today and 00:23:27.24\00:23:30.04 it's been years, it's been 00:23:30.04\00:23:31.71 since 2017 and I just praise 00:23:31.71\00:23:34.21 His holy name every day and 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.11 thank Him for that angel dream 00:23:36.11\00:23:37.68 that said, "One more time" 00:23:37.68\00:23:39.51 "and then you'll be OK." 00:23:39.51\00:23:41.08 I'm happy with that now. 00:23:41.08\00:23:42.88 >> So I'm sure there's people 00:23:42.88\00:23:44.49 wondering, what's it like for 00:23:44.49\00:23:46.02 you, your lifestyle now as 00:23:46.02\00:23:47.56 an amputee?
