>> Hello and welcome and 00:00:00.80\00:00:01.96 thank you for joining us on 00:00:01.96\00:00:03.16 It Is Written Canada. 00:00:03.16\00:00:05.00 Today we are visiting an 00:00:05.00\00:00:06.84 amazing community, a community 00:00:06.84\00:00:08.30 that is so close-knit that the 00:00:08.30\00:00:11.17 crisis of a world-wide 00:00:11.17\00:00:12.14 pandemic, instead of 00:00:12.14\00:00:13.61 traumatizing them, became a 00:00:13.61\00:00:15.81 catalyst, a wonderful 00:00:15.81\00:00:17.48 opportunity for growth. 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.31 Instead of shutting them down 00:00:19.31\00:00:20.92 it opened this community up 00:00:20.92\00:00:22.65 and it drew their hearts even 00:00:22.65\00:00:24.65 closer together and closer to 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.39 their land and to the heart of 00:00:26.39\00:00:29.06 their Creator. 00:00:29.06\00:00:30.96 >> In a moment we will explore 00:00:30.96\00:00:32.96 how the people of Wiikwemkoong 00:00:32.96\00:00:34.96 First Nations on Manitoulin 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.00 Island in northern Ontario has 00:00:37.00\00:00:39.50 been affected by the 00:00:39.50\00:00:40.90 challenges of the pandemic. 00:00:40.90\00:00:43.61 ¤¤ 00:00:44.37\00:01:20.18 >> Here we are with 00:01:21.78\00:01:22.78 Scott Flamand at the 00:01:22.78\00:01:24.45 Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory 00:01:24.45\00:01:26.55 and, Scott, you are dealing 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.88 with food distribution... 00:01:28.88\00:01:30.09 >> Yes, I do. 00:01:30.09\00:01:30.92 >> During this time, right at 00:01:30.92\00:01:31.92 the beginning? 00:01:31.92\00:01:32.69 >> Yeah, right at 00:01:32.69\00:01:33.29 the beginning. 00:01:33.29\00:01:33.92 >> They shut down this ter-- 00:01:33.92\00:01:35.69 >> The border, yeah, yeah. 00:01:35.69\00:01:36.89 >> And what was that like? 00:01:36.89\00:01:38.83 >> So what happened was the 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.30 Chief in Council for the 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.06 protection of the population 00:01:42.06\00:01:43.03 because we have a lot of 00:01:43.03\00:01:44.40 people with existing health 00:01:44.40\00:01:46.10 conditions that would probably 00:01:46.10\00:01:47.94 not do well with COVID so what 00:01:47.94\00:01:49.77 they did was they shut down 00:01:49.77\00:01:51.11 the border here so no one was 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.87 allowed to leave or enter 00:01:52.87\00:01:54.11 unless it was for an emergency 00:01:54.11\00:01:55.28 or they had a-- they got 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.95 special permission so we just 00:01:56.95\00:01:58.08 had one grocery store. 00:01:58.08\00:01:59.28 So even people that were 00:01:59.28\00:02:00.45 working could not stock their 00:02:00.45\00:02:01.92 fridges because we only had 00:02:01.92\00:02:03.08 one local grocery store that 00:02:03.08\00:02:04.39 could not keep up with the 00:02:04.39\00:02:05.39 demand so we started-- the 00:02:05.39\00:02:06.96 Chief in Council started a 00:02:06.96\00:02:08.29 food security program where 00:02:08.29\00:02:10.56 they purchased food and we 00:02:10.56\00:02:11.79 gave out care packages. 00:02:11.79\00:02:13.16 Initially it started out with 00:02:13.16\00:02:14.10 just about a hundred people 00:02:14.10\00:02:15.90 and then it quickly exploded 00:02:15.90\00:02:16.97 to about 750 people. 00:02:16.97\00:02:18.63 So we were doing 1500 00:02:18.63\00:02:20.10 deliveries per month so not 00:02:20.10\00:02:22.14 only did we have to order the 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.74 food, but we had to store it 00:02:23.74\00:02:24.87 as well so we moved to the 00:02:24.87\00:02:25.94 gymnasium and then we started 00:02:25.94\00:02:27.28 building an even bigger 00:02:27.28\00:02:28.78 inventory because the grocery 00:02:28.78\00:02:29.98 store could not keep up. 00:02:29.98\00:02:31.58 >> Yeah and you didn't have 00:02:31.58\00:02:32.45 people coming in... 00:02:32.45\00:02:33.01 >> No. 00:02:33.01\00:02:33.62 >> The island was shut down... 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.12 >> Yes, and then we even had 00:02:35.12\00:02:36.79 trouble getting food supplies 00:02:36.79\00:02:38.79 from our suppliers because the 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.46 shortages, like toilet paper, 00:02:40.46\00:02:42.69 toothpaste, all of that was in 00:02:42.69\00:02:43.79 short supply so we were 00:02:43.79\00:02:45.83 actually stocking up. 00:02:45.83\00:02:46.76 The other thing is our local 00:02:46.76\00:02:48.43 grocery stores were supplying 00:02:48.43\00:02:49.73 us, but we didn't wanna take 00:02:49.73\00:02:50.90 stuff off their shelf so one 00:02:50.90\00:02:52.87 of the other strategies we 00:02:52.87\00:02:53.97 adopted was we actually 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.74 piggy-backed on their orders 00:02:55.74\00:02:56.91 from their wholesaler so we 00:02:56.91\00:02:58.14 wouldn't take anything off 00:02:58.14\00:02:59.11 their shelves. 00:02:59.11\00:02:59.94 Logistically, we always had to 00:02:59.94\00:03:01.24 make sure that we always had 00:03:01.24\00:03:02.38 food in stock and that we 00:03:02.38\00:03:03.95 always had emergency cases and 00:03:03.95\00:03:05.41 then we also supplied meat, 00:03:05.41\00:03:07.28 protein, so meat packs were a 00:03:07.28\00:03:09.38 big hit because a lot of-- 00:03:09.38\00:03:10.62 Again, our grocery store 00:03:10.62\00:03:11.95 couldn't keep up with the food 00:03:11.95\00:03:13.32 supplies so... 00:03:13.32\00:03:14.62 Like any other community, you 00:03:14.62\00:03:15.62 heard about the shortages with 00:03:15.62\00:03:16.89 toilet paper, which really I 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.96 didn't understand. [laughs] 00:03:18.96\00:03:20.80 >> I don't think any 00:03:20.80\00:03:21.60 of us did. 00:03:21.60\00:03:22.43 >> No, no, exactly. 00:03:22.43\00:03:23.87 So it was a good opportunity 00:03:23.87\00:03:25.13 to learn and help the 00:03:25.13\00:03:25.93 community. 00:03:25.93\00:03:26.90 >> And you had everyone kind 00:03:26.90\00:03:27.94 of pulling in the resources to 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.11 help you out, to bag all 00:03:30.11\00:03:31.61 of these... 00:03:31.61\00:03:32.64 [Scott] We had baggers, we had 00:03:32.64\00:03:33.91 people unloading the trucks, 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.54 we had drivers, so it was 00:03:35.54\00:03:36.98 all coordinated. 00:03:36.98\00:03:38.28 We had spreadsheets so we had 00:03:38.28\00:03:39.91 routes all planned out so... 00:03:39.91\00:03:41.62 When we first started, we were 00:03:41.62\00:03:42.95 delivering 'til 8:00 at night. 00:03:42.95\00:03:44.92 That's how-- 'cause we were 00:03:44.92\00:03:45.79 just so disorganized. 00:03:45.79\00:03:47.62 By the end of June-- April, we 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.93 were-- we could deliver 400 00:03:50.93\00:03:52.79 packages by 11:30 in 00:03:52.79\00:03:54.00 the morning. 00:03:54.00\00:03:54.93 We would start at 9:00 and we 00:03:54.93\00:03:56.23 would have them delivered by 00:03:56.23\00:03:57.10 11:30 with... 00:03:57.10\00:03:57.77 >> So you got really 00:03:57.77\00:03:58.53 good at it. 00:03:58.53\00:03:59.50 >> Yes, we had the routes all 00:03:59.50\00:04:00.44 planned out, we had drivers 00:04:00.44\00:04:01.47 assigned so they knew their 00:04:01.47\00:04:02.60 routes and we told people what 00:04:02.60\00:04:03.91 time we were gonna be there. 00:04:03.91\00:04:05.01 So social media was actually a 00:04:05.01\00:04:06.37 good thing, too, because they 00:04:06.37\00:04:07.74 would-- we would tell them we 00:04:07.74\00:04:08.88 were starting delivery at 00:04:08.88\00:04:09.74 9:00, make sure you're home so 00:04:09.74\00:04:11.28 that was one of the 00:04:11.28\00:04:12.11 things we had. 00:04:12.11\00:04:12.78 >> Was it good for you? 00:04:12.78\00:04:13.78 I mean you're a business 00:04:13.78\00:04:14.88 person, you have your own 00:04:14.88\00:04:15.78 business, but now you're 00:04:15.78\00:04:16.95 helping your community. 00:04:16.95\00:04:17.85 >> Yes. 00:04:17.85\00:04:18.65 >> Was that a good thing 00:04:18.65\00:04:19.52 for you? 00:04:19.52\00:04:20.46 >> Yes, yes, it was a good 00:04:20.46\00:04:21.19 thing because like I said to 00:04:21.19\00:04:22.09 you earlier, it was good to, 00:04:22.09\00:04:22.96 you know, wake up in the 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.06 morning and have some purpose. 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.53 Like any other company, my 00:04:25.53\00:04:26.59 company had to shut down 00:04:26.59\00:04:27.93 during the pandemic so this 00:04:27.93\00:04:30.43 was a great opportunity for me 00:04:30.43\00:04:31.87 to work for my community. 00:04:31.87\00:04:33.17 >> The COVID-19 pandemic has 00:04:35.14\00:04:36.87 disrupted our lives in 00:04:36.87\00:04:38.01 many ways. 00:04:38.01\00:04:39.37 As economies around the world 00:04:39.37\00:04:41.21 began to shut down, food 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.68 security became and issue for 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.55 many around the world. 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.98 The World Food Program has 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.95 identified that approximately 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.05 130 million people around this 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.36 world will be food-insecure 00:04:54.36\00:04:56.79 due to the economic 00:04:56.79\00:04:57.93 constraints brought on 00:04:57.93\00:04:59.69 by COVID-19. 00:04:59.69\00:05:02.56 Here in Canada, we're going 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.87 from one in eight people 00:05:04.87\00:05:07.00 before COVID being 00:05:07.00\00:05:09.00 food-insecure now to one out 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.34 of every seven Canadians being 00:05:11.34\00:05:13.68 food-insecure. 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.38 >> So 126 Andrew's Place Road. 00:05:15.38\00:05:19.81 We get a list like this and 00:05:20.98\00:05:24.15 go from house to house. 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.15 [knocking] 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.59 >> [speaking Ojibwe] 00:06:03.12\00:06:04.99 Here's your care package. 00:06:04.99\00:06:06.76 >> Uh-huh, chi-miigwetch! 00:06:06.76\00:06:07.93 >> Alright, have a good day. 00:06:07.93\00:06:08.83 >> Uh-huh, you, too. 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.10 [Stephen] ADRA Canada is 00:06:11.27\00:06:12.63 supporting food banks and food 00:06:12.63\00:06:13.87 service groups around this 00:06:13.87\00:06:15.97 country and around the world 00:06:15.97\00:06:17.91 to be able to meet the needs 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.54 of those who are suffering 00:06:19.54\00:06:20.88 during this pandemic. 00:06:20.88\00:06:23.11 [Mike] When everything was shut 00:06:24.61\00:06:25.91 down, now you had an outlet. 00:06:25.91\00:06:28.88 You were working, I mean, 00:06:28.88\00:06:29.98 you're a hard worker and so 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.55 you couldn't sit at home. 00:06:31.55\00:06:33.12 >> No, no, I can't sit, I'm 00:06:33.12\00:06:34.32 not that type of person, I 00:06:34.32\00:06:35.32 have to do something and it's 00:06:35.32\00:06:37.33 OK watching Netflix once in a 00:06:37.33\00:06:38.96 while, but I couldn't watch-- 00:06:38.96\00:06:39.96 sit there for days and watch 00:06:39.96\00:06:41.60 Netflix, I would go crazy so 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.77 it was great that I enjoyed 00:06:43.77\00:06:45.63 doing this. 00:06:45.63\00:06:46.77 My wife also got hired. 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.00 She's a master gardener so she 00:06:48.00\00:06:49.40 actually ran the gardening 00:06:49.40\00:06:50.47 program so we both 00:06:50.47\00:06:51.61 work here. 00:06:51.61\00:06:52.87 She ran a gardening program, 00:06:52.87\00:06:54.61 250 gardens she supplied the 00:06:54.61\00:06:56.41 soil, flower beds, showed 00:06:56.41\00:06:59.75 people how to plant, gave them 00:06:59.75\00:07:00.95 seeds, water tanks, so she 00:07:00.95\00:07:03.49 did-- and showed them how to 00:07:03.49\00:07:04.55 can goods so she did all of 00:07:04.55\00:07:05.89 that so she's a master 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.32 gardener so she will-- so both 00:07:07.32\00:07:09.32 of us were working in the food 00:07:09.32\00:07:10.99 sector so... 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.19 >> So you're not just 00:07:12.19\00:07:13.16 teaching, I mean you are 00:07:13.16\00:07:14.86 teaching, you're not just 00:07:14.86\00:07:15.76 giving away, right? 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.93 You're actually teaching them 00:07:17.93\00:07:18.77 how to take care of themselves 00:07:18.77\00:07:19.90 and that is something that 00:07:19.90\00:07:21.94 goes way beyond COVID, right? 00:07:58.57\00:07:59.84 So they're living not paycheck 00:07:59.84\00:08:00.88 to paycheck, they're living 00:08:00.88\00:08:01.94 daily, they're trying to meet 00:08:01.94\00:08:03.18 the daily needs so... 00:08:03.18\00:08:04.95 >> So when people were shut 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.92 down in their homes, did you 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.88 find that just having that 00:08:08.88\00:08:10.72 contact, someone coming and 00:08:10.72\00:08:11.99 bringing groceries was 00:08:11.99\00:08:13.69 good for them? 00:08:13.69\00:08:14.92 >> Oh, yes, because some of 00:08:14.92\00:08:15.96 our drivers, they would return 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.23 like half an hour late and I'd 00:08:18.23\00:08:19.26 say, "Where were you?" 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.73 And I said, "This guy just" 00:08:20.73\00:08:21.93 "kept talking to me and" 00:08:21.93\00:08:23.13 "visiting me, they were" 00:08:23.13\00:08:24.33 "telling me to come in and" 00:08:24.33\00:08:25.37 "we couldn't, we had to talk." 00:08:25.37\00:08:26.37 But they would talk to people 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.37 because sometimes that's their 00:08:27.37\00:08:28.74 only cont-- especially elders. 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.61 Even the elders are on social 00:08:30.61\00:08:32.04 media now so that kind of 00:08:32.04\00:08:33.11 helps, too, because everybody 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.18 stays informed on 00:08:34.18\00:08:35.48 social media. 00:08:35.48\00:08:36.68 So I think social media is 00:08:36.68\00:08:37.95 probably a good thing in this 00:08:37.95\00:08:39.35 case because it kept people 00:08:39.35\00:08:41.08 informed, kept people up to 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.12 date, and people were able to 00:08:43.12\00:08:44.79 provide comments and 00:08:44.79\00:08:45.92 feedback as well. 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.36 >> So I'm thinking about the 00:08:47.36\00:08:49.79 mental health issues of 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.79 staying locked down. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.93 Did you-- you know, you're a 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.90 very communal people so you 00:08:55.90\00:08:59.37 like to connect with each 00:08:59.37\00:09:00.77 other, to get together, 00:09:00.77\00:09:02.87 and now this has stopped. 00:09:02.87\00:09:04.54 >> Yeah, so one of the 00:09:04.54\00:09:06.81 benefits, I guess, is a lot of 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.11 people started going out to-- 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.31 we have a lot of trails so 00:09:09.31\00:09:10.31 we're a large territory so 00:09:10.31\00:09:12.11 people can go walk in the bush 00:09:12.11\00:09:13.92 so I was telling some of your 00:09:13.92\00:09:14.95 colleagues that a lot of people 00:09:14.95\00:09:16.55 were going out in the bush. 00:09:16.55\00:09:17.75 We had a lot of quad trails so 00:09:17.75\00:09:18.79 a lot of people have 00:09:18.79\00:09:19.89 side-by-sides so we would 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.12 drive out to South Bay and we 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.39 would meet about 16 cars just 00:09:22.39\00:09:24.76 out for a drive in the country 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.03 because there was nothing else 00:09:26.03\00:09:26.96 to do and we're all locked 00:09:26.96\00:09:28.43 down so a lot of people were 00:09:28.43\00:09:29.73 boating, a lot of people were 00:09:29.73\00:09:30.90 outside so it actually in a 00:09:30.90\00:09:32.67 way, it probably promoted 00:09:32.67\00:09:33.74 outdoor recreation and getting 00:09:33.74\00:09:36.10 people more in tune 00:09:36.10\00:09:37.07 with nature. 00:09:37.07\00:09:38.34 And look here, we can go out 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.01 for a walk and you're not in a 00:09:40.01\00:09:41.78 confined area so... 00:09:41.78\00:09:43.75 So 50 years ago if COVID 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.35 happened, nobody would have 00:09:45.35\00:09:46.78 been hungry here 'cause 00:09:46.78\00:09:48.25 everybody had gardens, 00:09:48.25\00:09:49.38 everybody had pigs, everybody 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.09 had cows, they were growing 00:09:51.09\00:09:52.12 their own food, everybody had 00:09:52.12\00:09:53.19 a root cellar. 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.56 Yeah, so there was no 00:09:54.56\00:09:55.92 welfare, everybody took care 00:09:55.92\00:09:56.93 of themselves, everybody had 00:09:56.93\00:09:57.96 farms so if COVID happened 50 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.36 years ago we would have been, 00:09:59.36\00:10:00.80 "So what?" 00:10:00.80\00:10:01.50 >> Yeah! Right. 00:10:01.50\00:10:02.90 >> The wouldn't-- maybe they 00:10:02.90\00:10:03.77 wouldn't have gotten the 00:10:03.77\00:10:04.90 flour, that stuff, but they 00:10:04.90\00:10:06.13 would have had-- they would 00:10:06.13\00:10:06.97 have been able to feed 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.04 themselves. 00:10:08.04\00:10:09.07 So that's why we've seen the 00:10:09.07\00:10:10.17 gardening program. 00:10:10.17\00:10:11.37 Last year they only had 30 00:10:11.37\00:10:12.74 gardeners in the program, this 00:10:12.74\00:10:13.74 year they had over 250 gardens 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.78 so we were run off our feet. 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.45 My wife supplying soil, seeds, 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.95 workshops on how to grow their 00:10:19.95\00:10:21.92 own food and we're hoping this 00:10:21.92\00:10:23.39 continues past COVID because I 00:10:23.39\00:10:24.92 think with the price of food 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.02 and other stuff I think it's 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.36 gonna increase in the future 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.59 so I think there's a way 00:10:29.59\00:10:31.03 to make people more 00:10:31.03\00:10:32.36 self-sufficient and not rely 00:10:32.36\00:10:33.96 on the grocery store for their 00:10:33.96\00:10:35.20 only source of food. 00:10:35.20\00:10:35.70 >> Absolutely. Good. 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.23 So, Scott, I wanna say 00:10:37.23\00:10:38.70 miigwetch to you which means... 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.54 >> OK, thank you. 00:10:40.54\00:10:41.47 >> Yeah, thank you. 00:10:41.47\00:10:42.24 >> Means "thank you." 00:10:42.24\00:10:43.27 >> Yeah and thank you very 00:10:43.27\00:10:44.27 much for being with us and for 00:10:44.27\00:10:45.91 sharing with us what you do 00:10:45.91\00:10:47.21 here and how you've been 00:10:47.21\00:10:48.78 helping your community. 00:10:48.78\00:10:49.94 >> Yeah and we appreciate your 00:10:49.94\00:10:50.91 organization for helping us 00:10:50.91\00:10:52.38 out with food security and the 00:10:52.38\00:10:54.45 OAL program. 00:10:54.45\00:10:56.02 We really appreciate any 00:10:56.02\00:10:57.92 contribution or any help we 00:10:57.92\00:10:59.22 can have as a community. 00:10:59.22\00:11:00.32 So thank you. 00:11:00.32\00:11:01.46 >> You're welcome. 00:11:01.46\00:11:02.52 >> I'm here with Annette, 00:11:04.23\00:11:05.93 Scott's wife, who is an avid 00:11:05.93\00:11:07.86 gardener and she's been in 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.43 charge of the gardening 00:11:09.43\00:11:11.50 project here at Wiikwemkoong. 00:11:11.50\00:11:13.74 So, Annette, how long have you 00:11:13.74\00:11:15.34 been doing this? 00:11:15.34\00:11:16.94 >> I've been the gardening 00:11:16.94\00:11:18.34 program coordinator for the 00:11:18.34\00:11:19.97 community since April 00:11:19.97\00:11:21.11 of this year. 00:11:21.11\00:11:22.34 >> OK. How many requests did 00:11:22.34\00:11:24.68 you get for this gardening 00:11:24.68\00:11:25.75 program this year? 00:11:25.75\00:11:27.92 >> OK, so this year they had 00:11:27.92\00:11:29.88 274 requests for gardening 00:11:29.88\00:11:33.05 assistance which is up from 30 00:11:33.05\00:11:35.79 requests last year. 00:11:35.79\00:11:37.53 >> That's fantastic! 00:11:37.53\00:11:38.89 And what kind of requests? 00:11:38.89\00:11:41.80 >> Basically they ranged from 00:11:41.80\00:11:43.90 everything garden-related so 00:11:43.90\00:11:46.60 seeds, plowing, disking, 00:11:46.60\00:11:50.04 furrowing, watering 00:11:50.04\00:11:53.54 containers, water delivery, 00:11:53.54\00:11:56.31 pest diagnosis, canning 00:11:56.31\00:11:58.88 supplies, like, everything 00:11:58.88\00:11:59.91 associated with the 00:11:59.91\00:12:01.22 gardening cycle. 00:12:01.22\00:12:02.95 >> So you would get farmers to 00:12:02.95\00:12:04.85 come in and to do the disking. 00:12:04.85\00:12:07.02 And so how were these requests 00:12:07.02\00:12:08.79 fulfilled, like you had 00:12:08.79\00:12:10.16 farmers and what about the 00:12:10.16\00:12:10.96 other things? 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.76 >> So we hired a farmer to do 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.16 all the disking and plowing 00:12:15.16\00:12:16.90 and furrowing and he was the 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.93 only one that did it and so he 00:12:18.93\00:12:22.10 was working day, night, 00:12:22.10\00:12:23.57 weekends for about a month and 00:12:23.57\00:12:25.07 a half to get it all done in 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.68 time for people to plant. 00:12:26.68\00:12:28.31 >> That's amazing. 00:12:28.31\00:12:29.81 >> So yeah, he worked 00:12:29.81\00:12:30.91 really hard. 00:12:30.91\00:12:33.25 >> So, Annette, how did you 00:12:33.25\00:12:34.78 learn how to garden? 00:12:34.78\00:12:36.79 >> I grew up-- my family 00:12:36.79\00:12:39.02 gardened all the time, like, 00:12:39.02\00:12:40.79 that's how we lived. 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.09 So we had cows, pigs, 00:12:42.09\00:12:44.33 chickens, and we had three 00:12:44.33\00:12:45.89 gardens and that's what we 00:12:45.89\00:12:47.60 relied upon for sustenance 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.86 throughout the year. 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.30 I think over the years the 00:12:51.30\00:12:54.44 convenience of the grocery 00:12:54.44\00:12:56.30 stores and people, I guess 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.67 they're just kind of naturally 00:12:59.67\00:13:00.64 lazy anyways and they'll go 00:13:00.64\00:13:02.38 for the easiest solution which 00:13:02.38\00:13:04.88 I think is why gardening 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.02 hasn't been as popular as it 00:13:07.02\00:13:10.05 used to be because they don't 00:13:10.05\00:13:10.92 need-- they don't rely 00:13:10.92\00:13:12.12 on it anymore. 00:13:12.12\00:13:13.79 >> So it's kind of lost, that 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.06 part of your culture has been 00:13:15.06\00:13:16.39 lost, but now you said you've 00:13:16.39\00:13:18.69 got 270 requests, that almost 00:13:18.69\00:13:21.20 seems like it's been 00:13:21.20\00:13:22.66 revived again. 00:13:22.66\00:13:23.97 >> The pandemic really got 00:13:23.97\00:13:25.90 people thinking about their 00:13:25.90\00:13:28.64 food security and this is the 00:13:28.64\00:13:31.97 first time since I was kid 00:13:31.97\00:13:33.91 that I've been able to drive 00:13:33.91\00:13:34.98 through this community and 00:13:34.98\00:13:36.64 see, like, gardens at every 00:13:36.64\00:13:38.21 second and third house. 00:13:38.21\00:13:39.68 Like, it's just, it's amazing 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.55 the interest that 00:13:41.55\00:13:42.78 happened here. 00:13:42.78\00:13:43.89 >> That's wonderful. 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.69 And when you say, "gardens at" 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.69 "the house," tell me a little 00:13:47.69\00:13:48.89 bit about how the family is 00:13:48.89\00:13:50.36 involved in that gardening. 00:13:50.36\00:13:53.03 >> So it definitely has become 00:13:53.03\00:13:55.36 a family event. 00:13:55.36\00:13:57.00 We just did a survey for the 00:13:57.00\00:13:58.67 program last month and people 00:13:58.67\00:14:00.94 were saying that it gave them 00:14:00.94\00:14:02.94 something to keep their minds 00:14:02.94\00:14:04.24 busy and it gave them 00:14:04.24\00:14:05.47 something to talk about. 00:14:05.47\00:14:06.88 So there's definitely a 00:14:06.88\00:14:09.91 disconnect right now between 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.61 people, like, not knowing 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.01 where their food comes from 00:14:13.01\00:14:14.72 and we did have a couple of 00:14:14.72\00:14:15.95 participants who, it was their 00:14:15.95\00:14:17.32 first time gardening this 00:14:17.32\00:14:18.89 year, who said that their 00:14:18.89\00:14:19.95 children were just amazed that 00:14:19.95\00:14:21.02 that is where food actually 00:14:21.02\00:14:22.69 comes from because they didn't 00:14:22.69\00:14:24.93 even know, they just thought 00:14:24.93\00:14:25.99 it comes from the grocery 00:14:25.99\00:14:27.00 store, they've never seen a 00:14:27.00\00:14:27.76 tomato plant, you know? 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.86 So yeah, it's been an 00:14:29.86\00:14:31.20 educational experience, yeah. 00:14:31.20\00:14:32.40 >> That's wonderful. 00:14:32.40\00:14:33.90 And really brought-- so this 00:14:33.90\00:14:35.74 project has really built the 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.61 community and community is 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.31 such a big part of your 00:14:40.31\00:14:41.81 culture and it's just 00:14:41.81\00:14:43.68 uplifted that. 00:14:43.68\00:14:44.98 That's so wonderful and so 00:14:44.98\00:14:46.11 exciting so... 00:14:46.11\00:14:47.68 Annette, thank you so much for 00:14:47.68\00:14:49.02 being with us today and for 00:14:49.02\00:14:50.69 sharing what you have done in 00:14:50.69\00:14:51.89 this community with your 00:14:51.89\00:14:53.09 gardening project. 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.82 Miigwetch. 00:14:54.82\00:14:55.82 >> Miigwetch. 00:14:55.82\00:14:57.26 >> I'm Chief Duke Peltier, or 00:14:59.79\00:15:01.63 Ogimaa in our language and 00:15:01.63\00:15:03.93 I'm the elected representative 00:15:03.93\00:15:06.30 here Wiikwemkoong Unceded 00:15:06.30\00:15:08.00 Territory and the role I 00:15:08.00\00:15:10.81 perform is leading the 00:15:10.81\00:15:13.91 community and providing some 00:15:13.91\00:15:15.78 direction and being the 00:15:15.78\00:15:17.78 official spokesperson of the 00:15:17.78\00:15:20.55 decisions of our 00:15:20.55\00:15:21.75 elected council. 00:15:21.75\00:15:23.65 I've always grew up with the 00:15:23.65\00:15:26.79 knowledge of this-- our 00:15:26.79\00:15:28.59 community, Wiikwemkoong 00:15:28.59\00:15:30.06 Unceded Territory being a very 00:15:30.06\00:15:31.93 special and unique place in 00:15:31.93\00:15:34.86 this country. 00:15:34.86\00:15:36.90 So our community has always 00:15:36.90\00:15:39.63 been aware that food security 00:15:39.63\00:15:41.04 is one of the main issues that 00:15:41.04\00:15:44.74 we're at risk for. 00:15:44.74\00:15:48.54 Primarily for a couple 00:15:48.54\00:15:50.38 reasons, that we're at the end 00:15:50.38\00:15:51.41 of a road and we're also on an 00:15:51.41\00:15:53.18 island and the main food 00:15:53.18\00:15:55.88 distribution centres are 00:15:55.88\00:15:57.69 far, far away. 00:15:57.69\00:16:00.66 We were-- we immediately began 00:16:00.66\00:16:02.49 having discussions here 00:16:02.49\00:16:05.06 amongst our own pandemic team 00:16:05.06\00:16:07.03 and emergency control group 00:16:07.03\00:16:08.60 members on how to create a 00:16:08.60\00:16:14.00 food security system so that 00:16:14.00\00:16:17.64 we can provide for the-- 00:16:17.64\00:16:19.94 nurture the needs of our own 00:16:19.94\00:16:21.91 community and one of those 00:16:21.91\00:16:23.88 programs that we wanted to 00:16:23.88\00:16:26.51 bring back into our 00:16:26.51\00:16:29.45 people's minds was that they 00:16:29.45\00:16:31.79 do have the ability to grow 00:16:31.79\00:16:33.05 their own food. 00:16:33.05\00:16:35.42 Our community throughout 00:16:35.42\00:16:37.36 history have always been 00:16:37.36\00:16:39.59 agricultural people here on 00:16:39.59\00:16:41.76 Manitoulin and planted a 00:16:41.76\00:16:44.27 number of different crops to 00:16:44.27\00:16:47.84 subsidize their main source of 00:16:47.84\00:16:51.07 food, the fish in the waters 00:16:51.07\00:16:52.57 here and part of-- one of the 00:16:52.57\00:16:55.21 programs that we wanted to 00:16:55.21\00:16:56.81 develop was a gardening 00:16:56.81\00:16:58.95 program and mainly raised-bed 00:16:58.95\00:17:02.15 gardens so everyone can 00:17:02.15\00:17:03.92 participate, they're not too 00:17:03.92\00:17:05.82 large of a plantations. 00:17:05.82\00:17:08.46 So that's one of the successes 00:17:08.46\00:17:10.36 that we've seen come from 00:17:10.36\00:17:11.56 COVID-19 is our own people 00:17:11.56\00:17:13.60 returning back to land-based 00:17:13.60\00:17:15.93 type activities and growing 00:17:15.93\00:17:18.17 their own food. 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.93 So if we're gonna look at some 00:17:19.93\00:17:21.84 of the positives of a pandemic 00:17:21.84\00:17:23.61 is that the-- we reintroduced 00:17:23.61\00:17:28.88 the idea that you can grow 00:17:28.88\00:17:31.01 your own food and it's 00:17:31.01\00:17:32.95 probably a great idea to do it 00:17:32.95\00:17:35.92 even if there is no pandemic 00:17:35.92\00:17:37.62 because it does reduce your 00:17:37.62\00:17:38.99 own costs and you're getting a 00:17:38.99\00:17:41.66 much tastier product and 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.59 you're gonna enjoy it a lot 00:17:43.59\00:17:44.96 more because you're the one 00:17:44.96\00:17:46.36 that did the work with 00:17:46.36\00:17:47.83 maintaining the garden 00:17:47.83\00:17:49.00 throughout the summer. 00:17:49.00\00:17:50.93 The secondary program that we 00:17:50.93\00:17:52.73 put in place for COVID-19 as 00:17:52.73\00:17:55.04 part of our food security 00:17:55.04\00:17:56.81 approach was having a 00:17:56.81\00:17:58.87 food-distribution system, 00:17:58.87\00:18:01.44 terminal, if you will. 00:18:01.44\00:18:03.41 We hired-- gave the 00:18:03.41\00:18:05.55 responsibility to some staff 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.22 to begin coordinating the 00:18:07.22\00:18:08.92 ordering of transport loads of 00:18:08.92\00:18:11.89 different goods and to begin 00:18:11.89\00:18:14.96 assembling food-care packages. 00:18:14.96\00:18:17.96 So they were able to bring in 00:18:17.96\00:18:19.56 volunteers, they volunteered 00:18:19.56\00:18:22.40 to support the Food Care 00:18:22.40\00:18:23.80 Program and they began 00:18:23.80\00:18:26.17 packaging everything up in our 00:18:26.17\00:18:27.87 high school gymnasium and 00:18:27.87\00:18:30.57 where they were creating on a 00:18:30.57\00:18:32.84 daily basis packages that were 00:18:32.84\00:18:35.78 going to be delivered on a 00:18:35.78\00:18:37.51 bi-weekly basis to each of the 00:18:37.51\00:18:39.68 800 households that were 00:18:39.68\00:18:41.92 requesting support from the 00:18:41.92\00:18:44.65 Food Care Program. 00:18:44.65\00:18:45.82 So we're very fortunate that 00:18:45.82\00:18:47.96 from these systems that we put 00:18:47.96\00:18:50.86 in place here in Wiikwemkoong 00:18:50.86\00:18:52.83 that we're able to limit the 00:18:52.83\00:18:54.46 spread of COVID-19 in-- and 00:18:54.46\00:18:56.90 having an impact here in our 00:18:56.90\00:18:59.33 home and against our 00:18:59.33\00:19:01.20 loved ones. 00:19:01.20\00:19:02.44 >> I was really impressed with 00:19:04.57\00:19:05.77 the Chief in Council 00:19:05.77\00:19:07.81 responding to the pandemic, 00:19:07.81\00:19:09.88 like, it showed that they 00:19:09.88\00:19:11.48 really cared because I was a 00:19:11.48\00:19:12.81 recipient of the food boxes. 00:19:12.81\00:19:15.95 I didn't expect to be treated 00:19:15.95\00:19:19.05 like that, it was like, 00:19:19.05\00:19:20.39 "Wow, somebody really is" 00:19:20.39\00:19:21.96 "thinking about us," you know? 00:19:21.96\00:19:23.46 So getting the food boxes, 00:19:23.46\00:19:26.06 to me, was a big thing. 00:19:26.06\00:19:28.76 Like, I really appreciated it 00:19:28.76\00:19:30.87 every time that it came in. 00:19:30.87\00:19:33.57 I really give two thumbs up to 00:19:33.57\00:19:36.81 the Chief in Council and the 00:19:36.81\00:19:39.31 rest of the community workers 00:19:39.31\00:19:40.94 who worked hard, like, I knew 00:19:40.94\00:19:42.51 they were at the arena putting 00:19:42.51\00:19:44.05 these boxes together and 00:19:44.05\00:19:46.48 opening the door, you know, to 00:19:46.48\00:19:48.52 a knock and then getting this 00:19:48.52\00:19:49.82 box, it was like, right on, 00:19:49.82\00:19:52.19 like, you know, I was happy. 00:19:52.19\00:19:54.46 It put a lot of ease on my 00:19:54.46\00:19:56.49 mind, I didn't have to go to 00:19:56.49\00:19:57.79 the grocery store and deal 00:19:57.79\00:19:58.76 with that. 00:19:58.76\00:19:59.83 >> I try to live positive 00:20:01.86\00:20:03.33 all the time. 00:20:03.33\00:20:04.87 That's just the way I was 00:20:04.87\00:20:05.90 brought up, like, don't let 00:20:05.90\00:20:07.00 negativity get you, it just 00:20:07.00\00:20:08.84 brings you down and us native 00:20:08.84\00:20:12.14 people are connected with 00:20:12.14\00:20:14.38 nature so we have this 00:20:14.38\00:20:16.48 connection, but I'm glad it 00:20:16.48\00:20:18.91 continues in this COVID, you 00:20:18.91\00:20:21.22 know, how our community gets 00:20:21.22\00:20:23.08 together and keep that vibe 00:20:23.08\00:20:26.15 alive of giving and caring 00:20:26.15\00:20:29.66 and respecting. 00:20:29.66\00:20:32.19 Before COVID we were already 00:20:32.19\00:20:34.63 close, but now that we're in 00:20:34.63\00:20:38.63 this situation it comes 00:20:38.63\00:20:39.77 out more. 00:20:39.77\00:20:41.50 We really respect our elders. 00:20:41.50\00:20:43.91 Like me, I don't feel like 00:20:43.91\00:20:45.87 wearing a mask, you know, 00:20:45.87\00:20:47.51 it bothers me, it bothers me, 00:20:47.51\00:20:48.91 I don't want-- but I don't 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.78 wanna get an elder sick. 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.78 Nobody wants to do that. 00:20:52.78\00:20:54.95 So don't take any chances. 00:20:54.95\00:20:57.92 Like, I don't really go out, 00:20:57.92\00:21:02.22 I just stay home to make sure 00:21:02.22\00:21:03.32 everybody's safe. 00:21:03.32\00:21:04.79 And once-- if everybody could 00:21:04.79\00:21:07.83 do that for a while and get 00:21:07.83\00:21:09.30 rid of this COVID, we could 00:21:09.30\00:21:10.20 get back to normal as soon as 00:21:10.20\00:21:11.77 possible 'cause things are 00:21:11.77\00:21:12.53 gonna get worse. 00:21:12.53\00:21:13.67 Not for us, I mean like, 00:21:13.67\00:21:15.47 we're a community, like, it 00:21:15.47\00:21:18.81 will get bad, but luckily we 00:21:18.81\00:21:20.78 have our community keep 00:21:20.78\00:21:22.51 us strong. 00:21:22.51\00:21:23.85 That's the way, that's how 00:21:23.85\00:21:25.78 we're gonna overcome 00:21:25.78\00:21:27.28 this COVID. 00:21:27.28\00:21:28.98 If you see somebody in need, 00:21:28.98\00:21:30.95 we would help, and that's the 00:21:30.95\00:21:33.09 kind of people we are. 00:21:33.09\00:21:36.09 I would like our people to 00:21:36.09\00:21:37.49 realize that there's more to 00:21:37.49\00:21:41.43 you than that because our 00:21:41.43\00:21:43.06 ancestors developed a 00:21:43.06\00:21:46.37 communication and the 00:21:46.37\00:21:48.20 existence with nature that we 00:21:48.20\00:21:50.47 all had and we have to gain 00:21:50.47\00:21:51.94 back and if we have all that, 00:21:51.94\00:21:55.84 all that in play with our 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.91 communic-- spirituality and 00:21:57.91\00:21:59.61 all this, you wouldn't even see 00:21:59.61\00:22:02.18 anybody hating anybody, you 00:22:02.18\00:22:03.89 wouldn't even see anybody 00:22:03.89\00:22:04.95 arguing, you won't even see-- 00:22:04.95\00:22:05.95 you just, "I will respect you" 00:22:05.95\00:22:08.36 "as a being." 00:22:08.36\00:22:10.56 As First Nations people are 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.56 like that and it shows in 00:22:12.56\00:22:15.16 Wiikwemkoong that we're like 00:22:15.16\00:22:16.46 that and all of us should be 00:22:16.46\00:22:18.77 like that, not just First 00:22:18.77\00:22:19.77 Nations, all of us. 00:22:19.77\00:22:21.34 >> My name is Kevin 00:22:23.97\00:22:25.47 Wassegijig, I'm Director of 00:22:25.47\00:22:26.91 Operations for Wiikwemkoong. 00:22:26.91\00:22:28.84 The pandemic in our community 00:22:28.84\00:22:31.38 has been challenging. 00:22:31.38\00:22:33.35 It's been a lot of work, 00:22:33.35\00:22:35.55 but fortunately we've had 00:22:35.55\00:22:36.82 tremendous support from the 00:22:36.82\00:22:38.92 overall community which has 00:22:38.92\00:22:40.92 been perhaps the main reason 00:22:40.92\00:22:43.96 that we've continued to remain 00:22:43.96\00:22:46.13 safe and healthy. 00:22:46.13\00:22:48.16 From a personal perspective, 00:22:48.16\00:22:50.87 again, some change needed, 00:22:50.87\00:22:53.34 you know, individual habits 00:22:53.34\00:22:54.80 that you have to change and, 00:22:54.80\00:22:57.27 you know, even today, you walk 00:22:57.27\00:22:58.87 into the grocery store, walk 00:22:58.87\00:23:00.21 into the gas station and 00:23:00.21\00:23:01.81 remember to grab your mask, 00:23:01.81\00:23:02.98 you know? 00:23:02.98\00:23:03.61 You get right to the door and 00:23:03.68\00:23:04.55 you have to turn around, run 00:23:04.55\00:23:05.28 back to the car and 00:23:05.28\00:23:06.05 grab your mask. 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.15 So definitely it's been an 00:23:07.15\00:23:08.35 adjustment, but again, in the 00:23:08.35\00:23:10.52 community and the community as 00:23:10.52\00:23:11.72 a whole, I think everybody's 00:23:11.72\00:23:12.92 done a great job. 00:23:12.92\00:23:14.52 I see a lot more people in our 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.22 community out for a walk, out 00:23:16.22\00:23:18.06 for a bike ride, you see 00:23:18.06\00:23:19.39 families out doing things 00:23:19.39\00:23:20.93 together where prior when we 00:23:20.93\00:23:22.93 were busy being busy perhaps, 00:23:22.93\00:23:26.43 it forced us, you know, you 00:23:26.43\00:23:27.77 gotta close in a bit. 00:23:27.77\00:23:29.84 And so I see a lot more things 00:23:29.84\00:23:32.47 like that that are beneficial. 00:23:32.47\00:23:34.34 I think it's been a good 00:23:34.34\00:23:36.48 reflection of our community. 00:23:36.48\00:23:40.48 You know, for generations, for 00:23:40.48\00:23:42.08 centuries, Anishinaabe 00:23:42.08\00:23:44.69 Indigenous people have had 00:23:44.69\00:23:46.22 to innovate. 00:23:46.22\00:23:46.99 That's why we're still here. 00:23:46.99\00:23:48.46 And so this has just been 00:23:48.46\00:23:49.36 another challenge for us 00:23:49.36\00:23:50.56 to innovate. 00:23:50.56\00:23:52.23 I wanted to say chi-miigwetch, 00:23:52.23\00:23:53.53 thank you very much to ADRA as 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.77 a collective, to the 00:23:57.77\00:23:59.73 individuals that help make 00:23:59.73\00:24:01.27 ADRA a reality. them to meet 00:24:38.94\00:24:40.48 the dire food needs in 00:24:40.48\00:24:41.48 their community. 00:24:41.48\00:24:42.91 This was so helpful that it 00:24:42.91\00:24:44.08 was reported that over 800 00:24:44.08\00:24:45.75 families were assisted with 00:24:45.75\00:24:47.92 food bags and supplies that 00:24:47.92\00:24:50.75 were most needed where food 00:24:50.75\00:24:52.12 access was very limited and 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.66 very expensive. 00:24:54.66\00:24:56.49 We were just so excited to see 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.49 the amount of people that were 00:24:58.49\00:24:59.69 being helped.
