い 00:00:00.26\00:00:23.08 い 00:00:23.08\00:00:29.26 >> Hello and welcome and 00:00:30.09\00:00:31.66 thank you for joining us on 00:00:31.66\00:00:32.93 It Is Written Canada. 00:00:32.93\00:00:34.63 Today we will be visiting the 00:00:34.63\00:00:36.56 Wiikwemkoong First Nation on 00:00:36.56\00:00:38.77 Manitoulin Island here in 00:00:38.77\00:00:40.57 beautiful Northern Ontario. 00:00:40.57\00:00:43.27 And it's such a beautiful 00:00:43.27\00:00:44.17 country, you really have to 00:00:44.17\00:00:45.57 visit this gorgeous community. 00:00:45.57\00:00:48.58 >> The leaders of this scenic 00:00:48.58\00:00:50.31 island community decided to 00:00:50.31\00:00:52.61 put their time, their energy, 00:00:52.61\00:00:54.85 and their money into building 00:00:54.85\00:00:56.82 the characters of the youth. 00:00:56.82\00:00:59.32 And after research, they 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.96 discovered there was one 00:01:00.96\00:01:02.79 character trait that would 00:01:02.79\00:01:04.33 make the difference between 00:01:04.33\00:01:05.69 success and failure 00:01:05.69\00:01:07.93 and that character trait 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.30 was resiliency; the ability of 00:01:10.30\00:01:13.23 a person to weather the storms 00:01:13.23\00:01:15.34 of adversity and change. 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.97 >> And so their solution: 00:01:17.97\00:01:20.11 to take the youth on a canoe 00:01:20.11\00:01:22.21 trip out into the wilderness 00:01:22.21\00:01:24.51 to let nature and the Great 00:01:24.51\00:01:26.45 Creator of nature to teach 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.48 their children this valuable 00:01:28.48\00:01:30.12 lesson of resiliency. 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.29 The Bible talks about it 00:01:32.29\00:01:33.89 in the book of Job. 00:01:33.89\00:01:34.99 It talks about these lessons 00:01:34.99\00:01:36.26 that we can learn from nature. 00:01:36.26\00:01:37.73 "But just ask the animals," 00:01:37.73\00:01:39.69 Job says, "and have them" 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.23 "teach you..." 00:01:41.23\00:01:43.00 >> Because the Wiikwemkoong 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.29 First Nations community knew 00:02:09.29\00:02:11.23 this awe-inspiring, scenic 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.40 location could speak to their 00:02:13.40\00:02:15.06 youth about their Great 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.93 Creator and teach them the 00:02:16.93\00:02:19.00 lessons of resiliency and help 00:02:19.00\00:02:21.60 their youth to learn how to 00:02:21.60\00:02:22.84 meet the challenges and 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.47 adversities of life, one of 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.98 the programs they devised is 00:02:26.98\00:02:28.88 the Outdoor Adventure 00:02:28.88\00:02:30.88 Leadership Experience. 00:02:30.88\00:02:32.98 It's a wilderness canoe trip. 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.82 In a moment we will introduce 00:02:35.82\00:02:37.75 you to these amazing young 00:02:37.75\00:02:39.69 people, their leaders and 00:02:39.69\00:02:41.69 guides, and explore how a 00:02:41.69\00:02:43.96 wilderness canoe trip has 00:02:43.96\00:02:45.99 benefited the youth of this 00:02:45.99\00:02:47.86 proud, progressive, 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.60 and prosperous people. 00:02:49.60\00:02:51.97 い 00:02:53.94\00:03:06.82 [nature sounds] 00:03:06.82\00:03:11.65 [Nimkii] The canoe trip is a 00:03:17.36\00:03:19.63 metaphor for life. 00:03:19.63\00:03:21.93 If we can work through the 00:03:21.93\00:03:23.23 challenges of a canoe trip and 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.73 make it to our destination, 00:03:25.73\00:03:27.37 then much like life, we can 00:03:27.37\00:03:29.37 work through the challenges 00:03:29.37\00:03:30.57 and make it to 00:03:30.57\00:03:31.31 our destination. 00:03:31.31\00:03:32.77 [nature sounds] 00:03:33.84\00:03:38.38 [Nimkii] The OALE experience 00:03:41.95\00:03:44.15 out of Wikwemikong is a 00:03:44.15\00:03:47.72 canoe-based, wilderness-based 00:03:47.72\00:03:51.63 expedition experience where we 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.96 are retracing the traditional 00:03:54.96\00:03:57.87 route of travel of our people 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.87 along the French River and 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.87 following the Georgian Bay 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.64 coastline up into the North 00:04:04.64\00:04:06.31 Channel, then we do a crossing 00:04:06.31\00:04:09.58 to Wikwemikong and paddling to 00:04:09.58\00:04:12.75 the Wiki Bay where we're 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.22 greeted by, you know, 00:04:15.22\00:04:17.19 a gathering of our family and 00:04:17.19\00:04:18.95 community in a celebration of 00:04:18.95\00:04:21.66 the completion of our trip. 00:04:21.66\00:04:23.66 [chanting and drumming] 00:04:23.66\00:04:27.40 [chattering and laughter] 00:04:27.40\00:04:31.07 [Nimkii] So the OALE program, 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.90 we're in our ninth year, 00:04:32.90\00:04:35.37 next year it'll be ten years 00:04:35.37\00:04:37.14 including the very first 00:04:37.14\00:04:38.51 pilot year. 00:04:38.51\00:04:40.08 The OALE program was sort of 00:04:40.08\00:04:42.54 envisioned in partnership with 00:04:42.54\00:04:44.81 Laurentian University and what 00:04:44.81\00:04:46.98 they were looking at was a 00:04:46.98\00:04:48.98 project that would examine 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.52 whether or not these kind of 00:04:50.52\00:04:51.99 wilderness experiences and 00:04:51.99\00:04:53.56 canoe-based expeditions would 00:04:53.56\00:04:56.22 create resiliency in the youth 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.86 and would we be able to, 00:04:59.86\00:05:02.70 by facilitating the challenge 00:05:02.70\00:05:05.23 of an extended wilderness 00:05:05.23\00:05:06.77 canoe trip, would we be able 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.27 to facilitate growth in the 00:05:09.27\00:05:10.77 youth so that they would be 00:05:10.77\00:05:12.67 able to learn to meet 00:05:12.67\00:05:14.48 challenges in their life. 00:05:14.48\00:05:15.78 Would it be a benefit to their 00:05:15.78\00:05:16.95 mental health? 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.28 You know, would it help them 00:05:18.28\00:05:19.51 to overcome adversity? 00:05:19.51\00:05:22.02 You know, would it help them 00:05:22.02\00:05:22.88 to, when they experience 00:05:22.88\00:05:25.29 set-backs, realize that they 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.32 can continue to work towards 00:05:28.32\00:05:30.36 things and eventually reach 00:05:30.36\00:05:31.53 their goal? 00:05:31.53\00:05:32.63 [Nimkii] As soon as it starts 00:05:32.83\00:05:33.66 to turn, what do you 00:05:33.66\00:05:34.40 need to do? 00:05:34.40\00:05:35.46 What do you need to do to 00:05:35.46\00:05:36.23 that back end? 00:05:36.23\00:05:37.77 Pull it, pull the back end. 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.60 That's it, pull it again! 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.50 [rower groans] 00:05:41.50\00:05:42.94 [Nimkii] This experience is 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.84 not just about learning how to 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.31 paddle, of course that 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.91 happens, it's more about how 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.68 do we as a group come together 00:05:54.68\00:05:57.15 to meet adversity and to 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.89 face challenges? 00:05:59.89\00:06:01.69 How do we, as a group that has 00:06:01.69\00:06:03.46 never interacted before, never 00:06:03.46\00:06:05.93 worked together in this way, 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.30 how do we create a community, 00:06:07.30\00:06:08.96 how do we engage with each 00:06:08.96\00:06:11.03 other in a way that enables us 00:06:11.03\00:06:12.10 to reach our goal? 00:06:12.10\00:06:14.14 Which is, of course, 00:06:14.14\00:06:15.47 140 kilometres of wilderness 00:06:15.47\00:06:19.51 canoe-tripping in not only 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.74 some of the most beautiful 00:06:21.74\00:06:22.88 territory that the Great Lakes 00:06:22.88\00:06:24.41 ecosystem has to offer, 00:06:24.41\00:06:26.01 but perhaps some of the most 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.95 difficult experiences that the 00:06:27.95\00:06:32.49 Great Lakes has to offer. 00:06:32.49\00:06:35.22 >> Welcome and thank you 00:06:36.93\00:06:38.09 for joining us again on 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.26 It Is Written Canada. 00:06:39.26\00:06:40.60 I am talking to 00:06:40.60\00:06:42.30 Lawrence Enosse, he is the 00:06:42.30\00:06:44.60 Brighter Future's manager here 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.70 at the Wikwemikong Youth 00:06:46.70\00:06:49.20 Centre, so welcome and thank 00:06:49.20\00:06:51.51 you for being here, Lawrence. 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.01 And with the Outdoor Adventure 00:06:54.01\00:06:57.58 Leadership Experience, I'm so 00:06:57.58\00:06:59.58 excited about that program. 00:06:59.58\00:07:01.82 What's the advantages 00:07:01.82\00:07:03.08 of that program? 00:07:03.08\00:07:04.85 >> First of all, just thank 00:07:04.85\00:07:05.72 you for having me on the show 00:07:05.72\00:07:06.92 and excited to be here, talk 00:07:06.92\00:07:08.42 about our Outdoor Adventure 00:07:08.42\00:07:09.72 Leadership Experience program 00:07:09.72\00:07:10.96 that we offer in our community 00:07:10.96\00:07:12.96 and yes, we take our kids on a 00:07:12.96\00:07:15.43 trip, it's 140 kilometres and 00:07:15.43\00:07:18.30 when you look at the map of 00:07:18.30\00:07:19.70 Ontario and our region, you'd 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.54 be like, "That's no way" 00:07:21.54\00:07:22.67 "that's 140 kilometres," but 00:07:22.67\00:07:24.87 sometimes the kids do 00:07:24.87\00:07:26.41 zig-zagging and they haven't 00:07:26.41\00:07:27.51 been in a canoe ever and the 00:07:27.51\00:07:29.71 trip could be longer for some, 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.18 but when we measure it out, 00:07:31.18\00:07:32.88 it is 140 kilometres from 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.42 point A to point B. 00:07:34.42\00:07:35.95 >> So they're learning how to 00:07:35.95\00:07:37.69 paddle along in their canoe, 00:07:37.69\00:07:40.49 that's a skill that you're 00:07:40.49\00:07:42.19 teaching them. 00:07:42.19\00:07:43.46 [Lawrence] It is a skill and I 00:07:43.46\00:07:44.96 think that when we look at our 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.09 programs that we offer 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.66 throughout the year, we've 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.30 provided a lot of our 00:07:49.30\00:07:50.67 community members the 00:07:50.67\00:07:51.57 opportunity to learn skills, 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.50 enhance their skills and our 00:07:53.50\00:07:55.30 OALE program is definitely a 00:07:55.30\00:07:56.91 skill-enhancer. 00:07:56.91\00:07:57.87 >> Mm-hmm. 00:07:57.87\00:07:59.27 What have you seen come 00:07:59.27\00:08:00.21 out of this? 00:08:00.21\00:08:01.04 You've been a part of it 00:08:01.04\00:08:02.11 yourself and it's affected not 00:08:02.11\00:08:03.65 just you, but your family. 00:08:03.65\00:08:05.35 >> I've been the 00:08:05.35\00:08:06.28 Brighter Future's manager 00:08:06.28\00:08:07.32 for ten years. 00:08:07.32\00:08:08.18 The program's entering-- we 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.48 just completed its twelfth 00:08:09.48\00:08:10.45 year and it's really helped my 00:08:10.45\00:08:12.72 family and it's helped me 00:08:12.72\00:08:13.82 as a manager. 00:08:13.82\00:08:14.96 My daughter, Aurora, who is a 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.06 post-secondary student at 00:08:16.06\00:08:17.39 Carleton University, she's 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.73 completed three trips as well 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.70 and when we look at the 00:08:20.70\00:08:23.10 learning aspects of the trip, 00:08:23.10\00:08:24.37 we provide resiliency, 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.87 problem-solving, you know, 00:08:26.87\00:08:28.70 learning to deal with certain 00:08:28.70\00:08:29.90 situations, we build and we 00:08:29.90\00:08:33.17 enhance our children with 00:08:33.17\00:08:34.44 those skills to better prepare 00:08:34.44\00:08:36.48 them for situations and also 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.75 it's a post-secondary and you 00:08:38.75\00:08:41.45 have to leave the community if 00:08:41.45\00:08:42.75 you want to continue with your 00:08:42.75\00:08:43.72 education so that's what our 00:08:43.72\00:08:44.89 program does as well. 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.06 >> The community of 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.29 Wikwemikong is, I wanna say, 00:08:50.29\00:08:52.49 unlike any other. 00:08:52.49\00:08:54.10 We're like, we're a huge 00:08:54.10\00:08:55.80 community. 00:08:55.80\00:08:56.97 Our population, I wanna say, 00:08:56.97\00:08:58.43 is around 3500 right now. 00:08:58.43\00:09:00.50 But if you go anywhere outside 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.70 of Wikwemikong, you're most 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.64 likely to meet someone that's 00:09:04.64\00:09:06.91 lived or has been living in 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.28 Wikwemikong. 00:09:08.28\00:09:09.51 Wikwemikong itself is a 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.21 beautiful place. 00:09:11.21\00:09:12.91 I'm really glad and happy that 00:09:12.91\00:09:15.98 I was born and raised here. 00:09:15.98\00:09:17.52 Well, I wasn't born here, but 00:09:17.52\00:09:18.32 I was raised here. 00:09:18.32\00:09:19.39 I was born in Sudbury. 00:09:19.39\00:09:20.56 [chuckles] 00:09:20.56\00:09:21.49 But being raised here, being 00:09:21.49\00:09:23.76 able to walk the streets as a 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.19 kid and just not have any 00:09:25.19\00:09:27.46 worries about anything crazy 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.10 like that, it's truly 00:09:29.10\00:09:32.43 something magical, 00:09:32.43\00:09:33.67 I would say. 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.24 The amount of OALE trips I've 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.04 been on is five. 00:09:38.04\00:09:40.11 I've been on one 5-day canoe 00:09:40.11\00:09:41.71 trip which, I wanna say, was 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.71 like 65 kilometres and then 00:09:43.71\00:09:47.12 four 10-day canoe trips. 00:09:47.12\00:09:49.48 On the big trips, the first 00:09:49.48\00:09:50.72 three days is 00:09:50.72\00:09:51.79 adjustment period. 00:09:51.79\00:09:52.82 Once you get past that, 00:09:52.82\00:09:54.59 day four, five, and six is 00:09:54.59\00:09:56.49 all everyone getting together 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.26 and enjoying the trip. 00:09:59.26\00:10:01.06 And then the last three days 00:10:01.06\00:10:03.20 you're exhausted, you're kinda 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.53 miserable and you're just 00:10:05.53\00:10:08.94 waiting to get home. 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.84 Sometimes you'll have people 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.11 that wanna give up and you've 00:10:12.11\00:10:13.58 gotta tell them, "No, we're" 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.34 "almost done, you're almost" 00:10:15.34\00:10:16.68 "there, just push yourself" 00:10:16.68\00:10:17.91 "a little harder," you know? 00:10:17.91\00:10:20.28 Then once you get home, 00:10:20.28\00:10:21.78 you see your family, you 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.22 embrace with them, maybe shed 00:10:23.22\00:10:25.12 a few tears, I've shed a few 00:10:25.12\00:10:26.96 tears a couple times, 00:10:26.96\00:10:29.02 especially seeing my nephew. 00:10:29.02\00:10:30.09 He's probably the most 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.43 important person in my life. 00:10:31.43\00:10:33.56 Every time I get back home 00:10:33.56\00:10:35.40 from a trip, he's the number 00:10:35.40\00:10:37.03 one person I go to. 00:10:37.03\00:10:38.90 When I get back from a trip 00:10:38.90\00:10:40.04 I feel like I'm at peace 00:10:40.04\00:10:43.41 with myself more than ever. 00:10:43.41\00:10:47.31 Like when I go through 00:10:47.31\00:10:48.91 everything that I go through 00:10:48.91\00:10:50.21 on these trips and then I get 00:10:50.21\00:10:51.71 home, I get to relax, I get to 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.45 be calm and just enjoy life as 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.45 much as possible. 00:10:55.45\00:10:57.29 Sponsors are a big thing 00:10:57.29\00:10:58.92 for these trips. 00:10:58.92\00:11:01.46 You've lowered the cost for 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.66 us, if you can manage to keep 00:11:03.66\00:11:05.29 that up and OALE can get 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.50 sponsors every year, it makes 00:11:07.50\00:11:09.40 it easier for kids to go out 00:11:09.40\00:11:11.20 and try a canoe trip of five 00:11:11.20\00:11:14.34 or ten days. 00:11:14.34\00:11:15.60 Either one and you're gonna 00:11:15.60\00:11:17.17 get an experience. 00:11:17.17\00:11:20.04 >> So the OALE program is 00:11:22.94\00:11:25.41 really good for the youth's 00:11:25.41\00:11:26.58 mental health because once 00:11:26.58\00:11:28.88 you're out there with nature, 00:11:28.88\00:11:31.19 it's very calming, 00:11:31.19\00:11:32.62 very relaxing. 00:11:32.62\00:11:34.96 And then not only that, you're 00:11:34.96\00:11:38.13 taking the kids back out away 00:11:38.13\00:11:40.00 from social media. 00:11:40.00\00:11:42.66 So once you're out there, 00:11:42.66\00:11:45.47 you know, you have to use your 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.07 communication skills. 00:11:48.07\00:11:49.94 They are, you know, working 00:11:49.94\00:11:51.74 together as a team. 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.04 It's been really good for all 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.05 the youth in Wikwemikong 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.71 because they actually learned 00:11:59.71\00:12:03.08 life skills out there. 00:12:03.08\00:12:04.92 They learned leadership, 00:12:04.92\00:12:06.92 they learned a lot about 00:12:06.92\00:12:08.72 themselves and not only that, 00:12:08.72\00:12:10.33 they learned about their 00:12:10.33\00:12:11.49 culture, they learned about 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.09 our land. 00:12:13.09\00:12:15.26 You know, I just, 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.97 I love it out there. 00:12:16.97\00:12:18.40 >> So you're thinking, 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.44 "This is just a canoe trip," 00:12:21.44\00:12:22.90 but it's more than a canoe 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.21 trip, they're connecting with 00:12:24.21\00:12:25.81 nature, it's a spiritual 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.11 experience as well. 00:12:27.11\00:12:28.41 [Lawrence] Yeah, it's definitely 00:12:28.41\00:12:29.58 a spiritual experience. 00:12:29.58\00:12:30.98 There's lots of reflection on 00:12:30.98\00:12:33.15 the trip as well and we-- 00:12:33.15\00:12:36.28 what we've done over time is 00:12:36.28\00:12:38.09 we've built that into, 00:12:38.09\00:12:41.16 you know, connecting with 00:12:41.16\00:12:42.39 themselves, connecting with 00:12:42.39\00:12:44.26 family, and connecting with 00:12:44.26\00:12:45.83 community and we're preparing 00:12:45.83\00:12:47.30 our kids for future whether 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.60 they're gonna be leaders or 00:12:49.60\00:12:51.27 they're going to be employed 00:12:51.27\00:12:53.00 in our community and we also 00:12:53.00\00:12:54.64 connected with the culture. 00:12:54.64\00:12:56.57 >> Mmm. Is the culture-- is it 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.91 very connected with nature? 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.94 >> Yeah, I would say it is 00:13:02.94\00:13:04.31 because what we noticed, we 00:13:04.31\00:13:07.05 call it, when we were doing 00:13:07.05\00:13:09.28 our research and even the 00:13:09.28\00:13:10.99 staff, we find that in the 00:13:10.99\00:13:12.82 beginning sometimes we would 00:13:12.82\00:13:14.09 get children and they weren't 00:13:14.09\00:13:15.56 really keen on going on the 00:13:15.56\00:13:16.83 trip, they kinda fought the 00:13:16.83\00:13:18.36 first couple days about it and 00:13:18.36\00:13:20.16 then after day three when 00:13:20.16\00:13:21.56 you're kinda in the middle of 00:13:21.56\00:13:23.50 nowhere, you're out there 00:13:23.50\00:13:24.80 paddling, that you kinda just 00:13:24.80\00:13:26.67 forget everything and you're 00:13:26.67\00:13:28.34 just looking around at nature, 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.01 could be stormy and you're 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.31 working with everybody else 00:13:32.31\00:13:34.08 that's on the trip so they're 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.18 able to come together... 00:13:35.18\00:13:36.71 [Mike] That's awesome. 00:13:36.71\00:13:37.71 [Lawrence] It's incredible. 00:13:37.71\00:13:38.88 [Mike] Yeah, that's 00:13:38.88\00:13:39.68 really good. 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.02 So, Lawrence, this program is 00:13:41.02\00:13:43.22 quite an expensive program as 00:13:43.22\00:13:44.49 well and so there's a lot of 00:13:44.49\00:13:45.69 investment that goes 00:13:45.69\00:13:46.52 into this. 00:13:46.52\00:13:47.86 >> Yeah, the program is quite 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.86 expensive and what we do every 00:13:49.86\00:13:53.06 year is we look for funding 00:13:53.06\00:13:55.73 for our program and we've been 00:13:55.73\00:13:57.80 very lucky to have partners 00:13:57.80\00:13:59.57 such as ADRA. 00:13:59.57\00:14:01.04 ADRA has helped us two years 00:14:01.04\00:14:03.34 now with a financial donation 00:14:03.34\00:14:05.61 and with that donation we've 00:14:05.61\00:14:06.81 been able to supply proper 00:14:06.81\00:14:10.41 equipment for our youth of our 00:14:10.41\00:14:12.28 community, we've also been 00:14:12.28\00:14:14.35 able to make sure that we put 00:14:14.35\00:14:16.08 the money towards food for our 00:14:16.08\00:14:17.65 trips 'cause our trips are 00:14:17.65\00:14:18.45 ten days. 00:14:18.45\00:14:19.85 It's not a simple camping trip 00:14:19.85\00:14:21.22 where you go camping for a 00:14:21.22\00:14:22.42 weekend, you're staying in one 00:14:22.42\00:14:23.49 spot, your equipment's all put 00:14:23.49\00:14:24.96 away, our kids are out 00:14:24.96\00:14:27.03 tripping and voyaging so it's 00:14:27.03\00:14:30.03 not like it's a stay in one 00:14:30.03\00:14:32.37 spot, so they're travelling and 00:14:32.37\00:14:34.54 a lot of wear and tear on the 00:14:34.54\00:14:35.57 equipment and everything like 00:14:35.57\00:14:36.54 that so we just wanna thank 00:14:36.54\00:14:37.54 ADRA for their contribution 00:14:37.54\00:14:38.44 and making our program 00:14:38.44\00:14:39.71 a success. 00:14:39.71\00:14:41.01 >> I'm Ian, Ian Dokum. 00:14:42.71\00:14:45.38 I am 14, from Wikwemikong. 00:14:45.38\00:14:49.55 It's just amazing seeing wild 00:14:56.79\00:14:59.26 animals with the beautiful 00:14:59.26\00:15:01.06 trees, green trees, blue water 00:15:01.06\00:15:03.93 instead of seeing, like, 00:15:03.93\00:15:05.43 I don't know, just on your 00:15:05.43\00:15:06.94 phone the whole time, 00:15:06.94\00:15:08.30 laying in bed. 00:15:08.30\00:15:10.04 It's better being out in 00:15:10.04\00:15:11.27 nature, enjoying it, going 00:15:11.27\00:15:13.17 swimming while canoeing. 00:15:13.17\00:15:15.08 [shouts and laughter] 00:15:15.91\00:15:20.15 [Nimkii] So how do we 00:15:27.12\00:15:28.69 incorporate culture into 00:15:28.69\00:15:30.73 this experience? 00:15:30.73\00:15:32.09 One of the ways is, of course, 00:15:32.09\00:15:33.46 is through daily prayer. 00:15:33.46\00:15:35.26 We don't have any sort of 00:15:35.26\00:15:37.07 formal way of engaging in that 00:15:37.07\00:15:38.47 prayer but we encourage each 00:15:38.47\00:15:40.30 participant to engage in it 00:15:40.30\00:15:42.27 personally, but also to do 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.34 those prayers on behalf of the 00:15:44.34\00:15:46.27 other group. 00:15:46.27\00:15:47.18 [Nimkii] To honour everything 00:15:47.18\00:15:48.21 in creation, that's what we 00:15:48.21\00:15:49.14 mean by respect. 00:15:49.14\00:15:50.61 Bravery doesn't mean, 00:15:52.18\00:15:55.55 you know, that you're the 00:15:55.55\00:15:56.22 first one... 00:15:56.22\00:15:57.05 [Nimkii] We also encourage and 00:15:57.05\00:15:59.12 work on developing a greater 00:15:59.12\00:16:00.82 understanding of our culture 00:16:00.82\00:16:02.32 through things like engaging 00:16:02.32\00:16:05.13 with the Seven Grandfather 00:16:05.13\00:16:06.63 Teachings. 00:16:06.63\00:16:08.13 So we will talk about bravery, 00:16:08.13\00:16:10.70 we will talk about humility, 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.80 we will talk about love and 00:16:12.80\00:16:15.14 truth and how we can 00:16:15.14\00:16:16.50 incorporate them and keep 00:16:16.50\00:16:18.47 those Seven Grandfathers 00:16:18.47\00:16:20.48 as a perspective on how to 00:16:20.48\00:16:22.88 live life well. 00:16:22.88\00:16:24.45 >> I'm Chief Duke Peltier, 00:16:26.08\00:16:28.08 or Ogimaa in our language and 00:16:28.08\00:16:31.35 I'm the elected representative 00:16:31.35\00:16:32.55 here in Wiikwemkoong Unceded 00:16:32.55\00:16:34.69 Territory and the role I 00:16:34.69\00:16:36.96 perform is leading the 00:16:36.96\00:16:40.46 community and providing some 00:16:40.46\00:16:42.16 direction and being the 00:16:42.16\00:16:44.30 official spokesperson of the 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.97 decisions of our 00:16:46.97\00:16:48.57 elected council. 00:16:48.57\00:16:50.27 When we first started the 00:16:50.27\00:16:52.01 Outdoor Adventure Leadership 00:16:52.01\00:16:53.34 Experience program in a little 00:16:53.34\00:16:56.08 over ten years ago, we wanted 00:16:56.08\00:17:00.32 to ensure that we provided a 00:17:00.32\00:17:02.38 space and an opportunity for 00:17:02.38\00:17:05.15 the youth in our community to 00:17:05.15\00:17:08.19 realize their full potential. 00:17:08.19\00:17:11.26 We began to identify specific 00:17:11.26\00:17:17.57 areas that we felt were 00:17:17.57\00:17:20.57 important to pass on to young 00:17:20.57\00:17:23.81 leaders through a mentorship 00:17:23.81\00:17:25.31 type program. 00:17:25.31\00:17:27.01 It's satisfying when you see 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.58 somebody go into a program, 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.88 on the first day where they're 00:17:31.88\00:17:33.48 very timid, they're not-- 00:17:33.48\00:17:36.05 they're unsure of their 00:17:36.05\00:17:37.25 abilities, they don't have 00:17:37.25\00:17:38.99 confidence, their self-esteem 00:17:38.99\00:17:40.12 is low, but then when they 00:17:40.12\00:17:41.56 come out of the program after 00:17:41.56\00:17:43.53 the seven to ten days that 00:17:43.53\00:17:45.66 they're out on the land, 00:17:45.66\00:17:48.86 they are a changed person. 00:17:48.86\00:17:53.34 And when we see these young 00:17:53.34\00:17:55.97 people come out of the 00:17:55.97\00:17:57.41 program, they're full of life, 00:17:57.41\00:18:00.74 they're full of happiness, 00:18:00.74\00:18:02.48 they're very-- their home 00:18:02.48\00:18:06.65 environment, it changes 00:18:06.65\00:18:09.02 because some of the positive 00:18:09.02\00:18:11.32 stories that come out of that 00:18:11.32\00:18:12.49 is that they now know what 00:18:12.49\00:18:15.56 some chores are and they begin 00:18:15.56\00:18:17.33 to help out at home, 00:18:17.33\00:18:18.66 they begin to show their 00:18:18.66\00:18:20.20 parents that they can 00:18:20.20\00:18:21.76 communicate with them now so 00:18:21.76\00:18:23.47 all these things are built 00:18:23.47\00:18:25.17 into the OALE program. 00:18:25.17\00:18:28.17 >> I would say that the 00:18:30.21\00:18:31.17 program is definitely 00:18:31.17\00:18:32.47 something that I encourage 00:18:32.47\00:18:34.28 other people to try because, 00:18:34.28\00:18:37.71 like, it's really, like, it's 00:18:37.71\00:18:39.15 something that you never 00:18:39.15\00:18:39.98 forget, you make a lot of 00:18:39.98\00:18:41.05 memories there, you can make a 00:18:41.05\00:18:42.15 lot of friends, like, I have-- 00:18:42.15\00:18:45.49 like one of my closest friends 00:18:45.49\00:18:46.76 that I'm friends with now, 00:18:46.76\00:18:48.02 we got really close on that 00:18:48.02\00:18:49.09 trip and still to this day we 00:18:49.09\00:18:50.63 talk about, like, stuff that we 00:18:50.63\00:18:51.93 remember and we, like, laugh 00:18:51.93\00:18:53.26 about stuff that happened. 00:18:53.26\00:18:54.76 So it's definitely something 00:18:54.76\00:18:55.83 really memorable. 00:18:55.83\00:18:57.80 My favourite part about, like, 00:18:57.80\00:18:59.00 every single day, like, that 00:18:59.00\00:19:00.30 you spend is, like, the end of 00:19:00.30\00:19:02.04 the day, like, after everyone 00:19:02.04\00:19:03.04 eats and everyone's sitting by 00:19:03.04\00:19:05.04 the fire and you're just kind 00:19:05.04\00:19:06.31 of talking with everybody and, 00:19:06.31\00:19:07.74 like-- it just, like, the 00:19:07.74\00:19:10.18 scenery is beautiful. 00:19:10.18\00:19:12.08 You can see, like, the stars 00:19:12.08\00:19:13.72 super clear and it's just a 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.95 really-- like, I remember my 00:19:15.95\00:19:17.69 past canoe trip I was on, 00:19:17.69\00:19:19.22 we were sitting by the fire 00:19:19.22\00:19:20.39 and we had, like, a view of 00:19:20.39\00:19:21.72 the water and, like, the sky 00:19:21.72\00:19:23.56 was really bright and I just 00:19:23.56\00:19:24.76 thought it was-- I was really 00:19:24.76\00:19:26.49 grateful that I went on there. 00:19:26.49\00:19:28.46 >> Lawrence, the homecoming 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.67 celebration, that's a big 00:19:32.67\00:19:33.94 thing, isn't it? 00:19:33.94\00:19:34.87 Tell us about that. 00:19:34.87\00:19:35.84 >> Yeah, our homecoming 00:19:35.84\00:19:36.94 celebration for OALE has grown 00:19:36.94\00:19:39.11 over the years and it's a big 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.24 celebration where our children 00:19:41.24\00:19:42.98 and our youth who were on the 00:19:42.98\00:19:43.95 trip, they're separated from 00:19:43.95\00:19:45.28 their families for ten days 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.45 and when they're coming home, 00:19:47.45\00:19:49.62 they're paddling in from the 00:19:49.62\00:19:51.15 route that our ancestors have 00:19:51.15\00:19:52.45 taken and their families are 00:19:52.45\00:19:54.76 waiting for them, we have our 00:19:54.76\00:19:56.83 traditional welcoming, 00:19:56.83\00:19:57.99 our drummers there, our elders 00:19:57.99\00:19:59.76 are there, our chief is there, 00:19:59.76\00:20:01.33 and we're celebrating the 00:20:01.33\00:20:02.60 success of their kids, 00:20:02.60\00:20:03.93 for accomplishments and it's 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.23 almost like when you go 00:20:05.23\00:20:06.57 away to a school, 00:20:06.57\00:20:07.87 you get a certificate or 00:20:07.87\00:20:09.07 diploma, but we do something a 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.17 little bit more unique. 00:20:10.17\00:20:11.97 When our participants talk 00:20:11.97\00:20:14.01 about our trip, they're gonna 00:20:14.01\00:20:15.08 remember it and they're gonna 00:20:15.08\00:20:16.04 be able to pass on the story 00:20:16.04\00:20:17.35 and one of the things that we 00:20:17.35\00:20:18.85 do differently is most places 00:20:18.85\00:20:21.85 give out a certificate or 00:20:21.85\00:20:23.79 diploma or degree and what we 00:20:23.79\00:20:25.82 do is we give out a paddle. 00:20:25.82\00:20:27.36 So we have a paddle for all of 00:20:27.36\00:20:28.92 our participants who've 00:20:28.92\00:20:30.59 completed the trip and on the 00:20:30.59\00:20:33.09 paddle it'll show the distance 00:20:33.09\00:20:34.46 that they've completed, 00:20:34.46\00:20:36.06 the year, and their name so if 00:20:36.06\00:20:37.80 something ever goes missing 00:20:37.80\00:20:39.07 like this, they'll be able to 00:20:39.07\00:20:40.30 find out whose paddle it is 00:20:40.30\00:20:42.27 and again, it creates a story 00:20:42.27\00:20:44.07 and a legacy so, for those who 00:20:44.07\00:20:46.57 participated this year in 2020 00:20:46.57\00:20:48.91 with the Corona virus and the 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.61 pandemics going on, we had 00:20:50.61\00:20:52.08 special paddles made up, 00:20:52.08\00:20:53.85 "# we're all in this together" 00:20:53.85\00:20:56.05 and we have the year. 00:20:56.05\00:20:57.02 So this is a year that was 00:20:57.02\00:20:59.15 gonna be a definite 00:20:59.15\00:21:00.96 story-telling for future years 00:21:00.96\00:21:03.19 so more important than a 00:21:03.19\00:21:05.03 trophy or a certificate so 00:21:05.03\00:21:06.36 this is something that they'll 00:21:06.36\00:21:07.50 definitely be able to tell 00:21:07.50\00:21:09.36 their family or their children 00:21:09.36\00:21:10.80 or their grandchildren years 00:21:10.80\00:21:11.87 to come. 00:21:11.87\00:21:12.90 >> Awesome, awesome. 00:21:12.90\00:21:14.97 I think the success of the 00:21:14.97\00:21:16.37 program speaks for itself and 00:21:16.37\00:21:18.07 that success has bred more and 00:21:18.07\00:21:19.54 more success and it's just a 00:21:19.54\00:21:20.84 domino effect that's affected 00:21:20.84\00:21:21.88 your community and is 00:21:21.88\00:21:23.04 affecting other communities 00:21:23.04\00:21:24.55 and through the participants 00:21:24.55\00:21:26.35 there is this, you know, other 00:21:26.35\00:21:30.09 programs have been enhanced by 00:21:30.09\00:21:31.29 it so thank you very much, 00:21:31.29\00:21:33.09 Lawrence, for sharing with us 00:21:33.09\00:21:35.09 and miigwech. 00:21:35.09\00:21:36.79 >> Miigwech, thank you for 00:21:36.79\00:21:37.73 having me. 00:21:37.73\00:21:38.89 Have a great day. 00:21:38.89\00:21:40.00 >> My name's Mick Staruck. 00:21:41.96\00:21:43.20 My role with the Wikwemikong 00:21:43.20\00:21:44.33 Board of Education, 00:21:44.33\00:21:46.50 Elder Rita Corbiere calls it 00:21:46.50\00:21:48.04 the "Yaasgaabwitaaget." 00:21:48.04\00:21:49.77 It's a "system principal," 00:21:49.77\00:21:51.77 when you say that in English, 00:21:51.77\00:21:53.07 kind of like a superintendent 00:21:53.07\00:21:54.48 and so I support the 00:21:54.48\00:21:55.51 principal's curriculum 00:21:55.51\00:21:57.21 development, information 00:21:57.21\00:21:58.48 technology, programs like 00:21:58.48\00:21:59.58 that, special education. 00:21:59.58\00:22:01.02 So the OALE program is 00:22:01.02\00:22:03.28 probably the most phenomenal 00:22:03.28\00:22:04.32 youth-based program that I've 00:22:04.32\00:22:05.39 ever heard of and got to 00:22:05.39\00:22:07.49 witness an encounter of. 00:22:07.49\00:22:10.03 I think resiliency is there 00:22:10.03\00:22:13.53 and so when you're looking for 00:22:13.53\00:22:15.53 ways to unlock it and so when 00:22:15.53\00:22:18.30 we talk about OALE program or 00:22:18.30\00:22:20.40 some of these projects, really 00:22:20.40\00:22:22.50 what it is is it's bringing 00:22:22.50\00:22:23.77 them back to their roots and 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.81 sometimes the resiliency can 00:22:26.81\00:22:29.01 look a little dim because I 00:22:29.01\00:22:30.55 don't think the children are-- 00:22:30.55\00:22:33.21 have been ingrained or 00:22:33.21\00:22:35.75 introduced to their roots, 00:22:35.75\00:22:37.09 but these are the "igniters." 00:22:37.09\00:22:40.92 And yes, it's not just about 00:22:40.92\00:22:43.12 the canoeing, the resiliency, 00:22:43.12\00:22:44.56 it unlocks that for them to 00:22:44.56\00:22:46.36 want to farther and learn more 00:22:46.36\00:22:48.56 and then the more they learn 00:22:48.56\00:22:49.83 about their past and then the 00:22:49.83\00:22:52.00 more they see the skills they 00:22:52.00\00:22:53.34 have they probably didn't even 00:22:53.34\00:22:54.64 know, that resiliency I see 00:22:54.64\00:22:57.67 transforms into anything else 00:22:57.67\00:22:59.11 they do. 00:22:59.11\00:23:00.18 >> Our youth are very 00:23:01.88\00:23:03.01 important to our community. 00:23:03.01\00:23:05.78 I, myself, am an avid 00:23:05.78\00:23:07.75 outdoors woman, outdoors person 00:23:07.75\00:23:10.32 and have been involved with 00:23:10.32\00:23:11.55 the community hunt as one of 00:23:11.55\00:23:13.32 the coordinators and having 00:23:13.32\00:23:15.86 the knowledge that our elders 00:23:15.86\00:23:18.59 and our experienced harvesters 00:23:18.59\00:23:21.53 transfer that knowledge to our 00:23:21.53\00:23:22.43 youth is important to 00:23:22.43\00:23:24.00 continuing on our traditions. 00:23:24.00\00:23:26.30 You know, they are the ones 00:23:26.30\00:23:27.30 that are gonna be doing that 00:23:27.30\00:23:28.64 and having the OALE for an 00:23:28.64\00:23:31.97 example, that builds that 00:23:31.97\00:23:34.31 resilience within our youth 00:23:34.31\00:23:36.04 and I've actually had two of 00:23:36.04\00:23:37.55 my daughters participate on 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.88 the trips and, you know, and 00:23:39.88\00:23:41.55 I'd see when they come home, 00:23:41.55\00:23:42.95 coming onto the shore, they 00:23:42.95\00:23:45.09 were just so full of pride. 00:23:45.09\00:23:47.66 So, you know, I would ask 00:23:47.66\00:23:49.46 them, 'cause I seen sometimes, 00:23:49.46\00:23:50.86 the waves were big, and I 00:23:50.86\00:23:52.53 would ask them, too, like, 00:23:52.53\00:23:54.20 "How did you push through" 00:23:54.20\00:23:55.16 "that," like, "was that" 00:23:55.16\00:23:56.16 "challenging?" 00:23:56.16\00:23:56.93 And they said it was, but 00:23:56.93\00:23:58.30 everyone was supportive and, 00:23:58.30\00:23:59.77 you know, they would say, 00:23:59.77\00:24:01.04 "Keep going!" and they would 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.34 sometimes link canoes if the-- 00:24:02.34\00:24:04.17 if it became challenging and 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.57 they would support each other 00:24:06.57\00:24:07.58 and encourage each other and I 00:24:07.58\00:24:09.71 found that they-- my daughters 00:24:09.71\00:24:12.85 actually participated in more 00:24:12.85\00:24:14.02 than one trip because they 00:24:14.02\00:24:15.45 really enjoyed the first one. 00:24:15.45\00:24:17.15 So, and I think it really 00:24:17.15\00:24:18.95 built character within 00:24:18.95\00:24:20.46 the youth. 00:24:20.46\00:24:21.56 >> We at ADRA Canada were very 00:24:23.66\00:24:25.46 honoured and privileged to 00:24:25.46\00:24:26.83 participate and partner with 00:24:26.83\00:24:29.83 the Wiikwemkoong First Nations 00:24:29.83\00:24:31.90 community here on Manitoulin 00:24:31.90\00:24:34.04 Island, the world's largest 00:24:34.04\00:24:35.30 fresh-water island. 00:24:35.30\00:24:37.14 There was a program that ADRA 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.91 Canada participated and 00:24:38.91\00:24:41.31 partnered with several years 00:24:41.31\00:24:42.98 ago and they wanted to cancel 00:24:42.98\00:24:44.85 it this year due to COVID-19. 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.32 And so this year, because of 00:24:47.32\00:24:49.18 the funding that ADRA Canada 00:24:49.18\00:24:50.59 was able to provide, 00:24:50.59\00:24:52.09 the program was able to 00:24:52.09\00:24:53.72 continue and over 30 students 00:24:53.72\00:24:56.99 participated and successfully 00:24:56.99\00:24:58.76 completed the program. 00:24:58.76\00:25:00.56 We are so honoured at ADRA 00:25:00.56\00:25:02.03 Canada to work and partner 00:25:02.03\00:25:03.47 with our First Nations 00:25:03.47\00:25:04.33 community here on Manitoulin 00:25:04.33\00:25:05.97 Island, Wiikwemkoong. 00:25:05.97\00:25:08.77 >> Through the Outdoor 00:25:11.17\00:25:12.21 Adventure Leadership 00:25:12.21\00:25:13.71 Experience, the youth of 00:25:13.71\00:25:15.38 Wiikwemkoong First Nations on 00:25:15.38\00:25:17.38 Manitoulin Island in Northern 00:25:17.38\00:25:19.48 Ontario discovered how 00:25:19.48\00:25:21.72 exposure to the natural 00:25:21.72\00:25:23.45 environment provides 00:25:23.45\00:25:25.55 education, mental health, 00:25:25.55\00:25:28.59 stability, and the nurturing 00:25:28.59\00:25:30.99 we all need to achieve 00:25:30.99\00:25:32.93 our goals. 00:25:32.93\00:25:33.96 >> This amazing world that we 00:25:33.96\00:25:35.83 live in also provides us with 00:25:35.83\00:25:38.30 everything we need to stay 00:25:38.30\00:25:39.67 alive physically; the water, 00:25:39.67\00:25:41.47 the sunshine, the food, and 00:25:41.47\00:25:42.87 the air, but when we look 00:25:42.87\00:25:44.44 beyond our world to this 00:25:44.44\00:25:46.04 amazing universe of ours, 00:25:46.04\00:25:47.68 we see sights beyond 00:25:47.68\00:25:48.81 our imagination. 00:25:48.81\00:25:50.31 >> So today we would like 00:25:50.31\00:25:51.45 to offer you a free 00:26:11.87\00:26:13.27 Outdoor Adventure Leadership 00:26:13.27\00:26:15.00 Experience, a 140 kilometre 00:26:15.00\00:26:18.37 canoe trip into the 00:26:18.37\00:26:19.74 wilderness, it is not just 00:26:19.74\00:26:21.18 about learning how to 00:26:21.18\00:26:22.58 paddle a canoe. 00:26:22.58\00:26:24.48 >> No, it's about helping 00:26:24.48\00:26:26.85 youth learn how to create 00:26:26.85\00:26:28.38 community, how to work 00:26:28.38\00:26:30.72 together, and how to engage 00:26:30.72\00:26:32.69 with each other in a way that 00:26:32.69\00:26:34.29 enables them to reach prayer. 00:26:50.84\00:26:52.81 So let's take a moment to pray 00:26:52.81\00:26:55.21 to our Great Creator, God, 00:26:55.21\00:26:58.01 right now and thank Him for 00:26:58.01\00:27:00.08 the way that He speaks to us 00:27:00.08\00:27:01.58 and teaches our youth through 00:27:01.58\00:27:03.52 the works of His hands. 00:27:03.52\00:27:04.75 Let's pray. 00:27:04.75\00:27:05.95 Oh, Lord, creator of heaven 00:27:07.56\00:27:10.29 and earth, You are the Lord, 00:27:10.29\00:27:12.79 You alone and You have made 00:27:12.79\00:27:15.86 heaven and earth and the 00:27:15.86\00:27:17.87 waters and all that is in them 00:27:17.87\00:27:21.87 and You give them all life. 00:27:21.87\00:27:24.31 You have truly made everything 00:27:24.31\00:27:26.44 beautiful in its time. 00:27:26.44\00:27:28.78 And because You put eternity 00:27:28.78\00:27:30.81 in all of our hearts, we want 00:27:30.81\00:27:32.25 to thank You and we want to 00:27:32.25\00:27:33.55 pray to You in Jesus' name, 00:27:33.55\00:27:35.65 our Creator and Redeemer, 00:27:35.65\00:27:37.09 amen. 00:27:37.09\00:27:38.55 [Mike] We want you to 00:27:42.16\00:27:43.22 experience the 00:27:43.22\00:27:44.53 life-transforming truth found 00:27:44.53\00:27:46.76 in the words of Jesus our 00:27:46.76\00:27:48.40 saviour when He said, 00:27:48.40\00:27:49.76 い 00:27:59.51\00:28:01.71 [Felicity] I've heard some 00:28:01.71\00:28:03.01 people say that life is like a 00:28:03.01\00:28:04.05 canoe trip because it's hard. 00:28:04.05\00:28:05.11 You just wanna go home. 00:28:05.11\00:28:07.05 It's only hard if you look at 00:28:07.05\00:28:08.32 the bad part of it and you 00:28:08.32\00:28:09.78 don't, you know, think about 00:28:09.78\00:28:10.79 the positives. 00:28:10.79\00:28:12.42 Yeah, it's gonna be hard 00:28:12.42\00:28:13.82 sometimes, but you gotta look 00:28:13.82\00:28:15.09 past that, you gotta think 00:28:15.09\00:28:16.32 about where you're getting and 00:28:16.32\00:28:17.69 how far you've already 00:28:17.69\00:28:18.79 travelled and how, you know, 00:28:18.79\00:28:20.33 you've already pushed through 00:28:20.33\00:28:21.40 so much and how you can 00:28:21.40\00:28:23.00 keep going. 00:28:23.00\00:28:24.53 This trip wouldn't have been 00:28:27.17\00:28:28.47 possible without sponsors and 00:28:28.47\00:28:30.94 people helping us to provide 00:28:30.94\00:28:32.74 for this trip. 00:28:32.74\00:28:34.18 It's taught me a lot about who 00:28:34.18\00:28:36.04 I am and who I can become and 00:28:36.04\00:28:38.78 I'd like to say "thank you" to 00:28:38.78\00:28:40.28 all the sponsors for helping, 00:28:40.28\00:28:42.02 you know, bring us together 00:28:42.02\00:28:44.09 and to help us learn together, 00:28:44.09\00:28:45.75 to help us learn about who we 00:28:45.75\00:28:47.99 are as Anishinaabe people. 00:28:47.99\00:28:50.09 That's a big thank you. 00:28:50.09\00:28:51.83 We couldn't have done it 00:28:51.83\00:28:52.76 without you. 00:28:52.76\00:28:53.46
