00:04:37.97\00:04:38.84 >> Fifteen. 00:04:38.84\00:04:39.81 >> Fifteen? Wow. 00:04:39.81\00:04:40.84 >> Yeah, yeah. 00:04:40.84\00:04:41.94 >> So you're coming from a 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.48 good home, you're 00:04:43.48\00:04:45.15 volunteering, you're having 00:04:45.15\00:04:46.68 Christian input, that seems so 00:04:46.68\00:04:48.78 ideal, like an idyllic 00:04:48.78\00:04:51.42 environment, what went wrong? 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.05 How did you end up 00:04:53.05\00:04:53.79 on the streets? 00:04:53.79\00:04:54.59 How did you end up in 00:04:54.59\00:04:55.39 the addictions? 00:04:55.39\00:04:56.19 >> Uhh... 00:04:56.19\00:04:57.89 I was the one that didn't fit 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.06 in, I didn't find good 00:05:00.06\00:05:01.90 friends, I just-- I was low 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.13 self-esteem, no self-worth, 00:05:04.13\00:05:05.47 no self-awareness. 00:05:05.47\00:05:07.44 I had a friend, brought me 00:05:07.44\00:05:08.70 home one time and he showed me 00:05:08.70\00:05:10.01 his father's collection, 00:05:10.01\00:05:11.77 his father had a gun 00:05:11.77\00:05:13.94 and so when my friend went to 00:05:13.94\00:05:16.14 the washroom that day and I 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.35 was at his house, his parents 00:05:18.35\00:05:19.45 weren't home, I snuck into the 00:05:19.45\00:05:21.12 room and stole the gun and 00:05:21.12\00:05:23.28 stuffed it in my jacket and 00:05:23.28\00:05:24.92 made an excuse that I had to 00:05:24.92\00:05:26.55 go home and I went home with a 00:05:26.55\00:05:27.82 stolen gun. 00:05:27.82\00:05:29.26 I went around bragging that, 00:05:29.26\00:05:30.56 "Yeah, I got a gun," 00:05:30.56\00:05:31.43 "I got a gun." 00:05:31.43\00:05:32.69 It didn't take long for the 00:05:32.69\00:05:33.70 principal to come and check my 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.20 locker and yeah, I did 00:05:35.20\00:05:36.60 have a gun. 00:05:36.60\00:05:37.83 And back in the 70's, taking a 00:05:37.83\00:05:38.90 gun to school was not a good 00:05:38.90\00:05:39.87 thing to do. 00:05:39.87\00:05:40.90 >> So what did you end up 00:05:40.90\00:05:43.10 doing, I mean did your parents 00:05:43.10\00:05:44.47 find out about this? 00:05:44.47\00:05:45.91 >> When I got home, everything 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.04 was good and about a week 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.04 later when I walked in the 00:05:49.04\00:05:51.75 house and there was a cop 00:05:51.75\00:05:53.72 sitting there and they told me 00:05:53.72\00:05:56.45 that "No, you didn't find" 00:05:56.45\00:05:57.55 "the gun, actually the gun" 00:05:57.55\00:05:58.85 "has been stolen." 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.79 And I had a great long lecture 00:06:00.79\00:06:03.43 and my mom said, "When your" 00:06:03.43\00:06:05.39 "father gets home," 00:06:05.39\00:06:07.23 "we're gonna have a very" 00:06:07.23\00:06:08.26 "serious talk." 00:06:08.26\00:06:09.40 And so my remedy to that was 00:06:09.40\00:06:10.87 to run away. 00:06:10.87\00:06:12.13 And I ran away. 00:06:12.13\00:06:13.90 And I ran up into the hills 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.60 behind our house, but then 00:06:15.60\00:06:18.77 about midnight, it was getting 00:06:18.77\00:06:20.44 cold and I was getting hungry 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.94 and I'd never run away before. 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.41 I was 12 maybe, I think, 12 or 00:06:23.41\00:06:25.01 13 and I'd never run away 00:06:25.01\00:06:26.28 before and so I made my way 00:06:26.28\00:06:28.42 back home and instead of my 00:06:28.42\00:06:29.68 parents being really angry at 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.32 me, they were just grateful to 00:06:31.32\00:06:32.45 have me home so I kind of got 00:06:32.45\00:06:33.36 away with it, but what that 00:06:33.36\00:06:35.19 set inside of me was a pattern 00:06:35.19\00:06:37.13 that when I couldn't face 00:06:37.13\00:06:38.29 something or when I was 00:06:38.29\00:06:39.56 scared, I would run. 00:06:39.56\00:06:41.33 Run and hide, just gone. 00:06:41.33\00:06:43.53 And that set a pattern for me 00:06:43.53\00:06:44.80 for my years on the streets. 00:06:44.80\00:06:47.14 [Mike] So you developed this 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.67 pattern of running away 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.57 whenever you got into trouble, 00:06:50.57\00:06:51.84 in time so you kept on getting 00:06:51.84\00:06:53.14 into trouble. 00:06:53.14\00:06:53.91 >> Mmhmm. 00:06:53.91\00:06:55.08 >> How did that lead you to 00:06:55.08\00:06:56.71 get onto the streets? 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.91 >> When I was about 14, a guy 00:06:59.91\00:07:03.05 introduced me to what is LSD, 00:07:03.05\00:07:05.65 I don't even know what the 00:07:05.65\00:07:06.72 technical name for it-- but 00:07:06.72\00:07:07.92 back then, we called it "acid" 00:07:07.92\00:07:10.29 and I did like five hits. 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.23 I'd never done drugs before. 00:07:12.23\00:07:13.70 He said, "Have these," 00:07:13.70\00:07:14.73 and I did like five hits. 00:07:14.73\00:07:15.76 And then I smoked a quarter 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.00 ounce of, I think, marijuana 00:07:17.00\00:07:18.87 and so I was pretty high and 00:07:18.87\00:07:21.80 that was my explosion into my 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.54 drug addiction on the streets. 00:07:23.54\00:07:25.14 And so I couldn't handle 00:07:25.14\00:07:26.84 things, I'd run away, I'd get 00:07:26.84\00:07:28.04 into trouble because I didn't 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.71 like myself and when I ran 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.55 away, I'd end up doing drugs, 00:07:31.55\00:07:32.75 and when I'd end up doing 00:07:32.75\00:07:33.92 drugs, I'd get fed up and then 00:07:33.92\00:07:35.88 it just turned into a cycle. 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.79 So I run away so many times 00:07:37.79\00:07:39.32 that when my parents caught up 00:07:39.32\00:07:40.82 to me the last time, 00:07:40.82\00:07:42.46 shorten the story, I'll just 00:07:42.46\00:07:43.96 bring it to that point, when 00:07:43.96\00:07:45.49 they caught me-- caught up 00:07:45.49\00:07:47.23 with me the last time I ran 00:07:47.23\00:07:48.30 away, I was in Calgary, 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.23 I started-- left from Kelowna 00:07:51.23\00:07:52.73 and they caught up with me in 00:07:52.73\00:07:53.74 Calgary and my father said out 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.47 of just-- he did all that he 00:07:56.47\00:07:57.97 could do and he had to let me 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.87 go, I was 16 and he said, 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.64 "If you wanna be on your own," 00:08:02.64\00:08:03.55 "good luck." 00:08:03.55\00:08:04.48 He shook my hand and he said, 00:08:04.48\00:08:05.25 "Good luck." 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.08 And that was the beginning of 00:08:06.08\00:08:07.42 my life and so I hitch-hiked 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.02 across Canada 00:08:09.02\00:08:10.35 the first time to Quebec. 00:08:10.35\00:08:11.82 And then I got tired of Quebec 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.22 and I hitch-hiked back and 00:08:13.22\00:08:15.02 that's when trouble started. 00:08:15.02\00:08:16.99 >> And that's trouble, what 00:08:16.99\00:08:18.29 did that look like? 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.96 >> One in three run-away 00:08:19.96\00:08:22.13 children, teenagers, 00:08:22.13\00:08:23.26 approximately on the street, 00:08:23.26\00:08:24.77 male and female are sexually 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.14 exploited and raped. 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.27 The first person brought me 00:08:29.27\00:08:32.44 down to Abbotsford, he said, 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.04 "You know, it's a cold night." 00:08:34.04\00:08:35.34 "Come on down to Abbotsford." 00:08:35.34\00:08:36.44 "You can head out in the" 00:08:36.44\00:08:37.35 "morning, I'll give you a" 00:08:37.35\00:08:38.18 "good place to sleep" 00:08:38.18\00:08:38.91 "and a meal." 00:08:38.91\00:08:39.91 And I didn't have any idea 00:08:39.91\00:08:40.75 about nothing, I was wet 00:08:40.75\00:08:41.75 behind the ears. 00:08:41.75\00:08:43.62 He said, "Hey, have some" 00:08:43.62\00:08:44.79 "wine," and he said, "Here," 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.05 "smoke this," it was marijuana 00:08:46.05\00:08:47.26 and I felt like an adult, 00:08:47.26\00:08:48.26 I can live on my own, 00:08:48.26\00:08:49.29 I'm on my own now, 00:08:49.29\00:08:50.39 making my own roots. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.46 And he put on a song called 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.20 Bad Out of Hell from 00:08:54.20\00:08:55.66 Meat Loaf and that was 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.57 the first guy to rape me. 00:08:58.57\00:09:01.10 I got away from that and that 00:09:01.10\00:09:02.67 was in Abbotsford and I got 00:09:02.67\00:09:04.41 away from that and I ran up to 00:09:04.41\00:09:05.81 Grande Prairie, Alberta. 00:09:05.81\00:09:07.68 And I was alone and lonely. 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.08 There's a difference. 00:09:10.08\00:09:11.68 Aloneness and lonely are not 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.18 the same thing and aloneness 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.22 was following me. 00:09:14.22\00:09:16.18 And aloneness-- 00:09:16.18\00:09:17.69 I wanted back home, I wanted 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.29 to find my family. 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.22 At that point I was ready to 00:09:21.22\00:09:23.19 fix it, I didn't want to do 00:09:23.19\00:09:24.73 addictions anymore, I got 00:09:24.73\00:09:26.70 tired of it, I'd hitch-hiked 00:09:26.70\00:09:27.96 across Canada, I'd seen enough, 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.17 I was confused, I was hurt. 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.33 I would go to this religious 00:09:32.33\00:09:33.30 place that cares for the 00:09:33.30\00:09:34.67 homeless and they'll help me 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.47 'cause I remembered my Bible, 00:09:36.47\00:09:37.67 right, and I was-- 00:09:37.67\00:09:38.64 I had faith that maybe this 00:09:38.64\00:09:39.91 was the thing to do. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.71 And I went there and the 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.58 night shift manager of the 00:09:43.58\00:09:44.95 place told me, "God brought" 00:09:44.95\00:09:46.72 "you here and God's been" 00:09:46.72\00:09:48.45 "good to you, and God brought" 00:09:48.45\00:09:49.78 "you here so you could learn" 00:09:49.78\00:09:50.85 "what love was." 00:09:50.85\00:09:52.05 And he was the second guy, 00:09:52.05\00:09:53.56 he told me God loved me 00:09:53.56\00:09:54.72 and raped me. 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.76 And I got away from that 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.09 and ran away to my hometown, 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.86 Fort St. John. 00:09:59.86\00:10:02.90 And again, I'm stupid, young, 00:10:02.90\00:10:05.83 wet behind the ears, 00:10:05.83\00:10:07.10 16 years old, a guy invites me 00:10:07.10\00:10:09.24 over to a party at his place 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.51 and there was only him. 00:10:10.51\00:10:12.84 And he was the third guy to 00:10:12.84\00:10:14.08 rape me and that's when my 00:10:14.08\00:10:15.88 mind snapped and that was 00:10:15.88\00:10:17.35 the beginning of a 00:10:17.35\00:10:18.38 25-year experience. 00:10:18.38\00:10:21.18 >> And after that you never-- 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.55 you decided never ever to go 00:10:23.55\00:10:24.69 home again, right? 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.19 >> Nah, I didn't know how to go 00:10:27.19\00:10:28.06 home anymore and it wasn't 00:10:28.06\00:10:29.39 that I didn't want to go home, 00:10:29.39\00:10:30.63 it was that I just didn't feel 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.33 like I belonged 00:10:32.33\00:10:33.33 at home anymore. 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.10 It was-- my parents would have 00:10:35.10\00:10:36.20 brought me back. 00:10:36.20\00:10:37.30 I showed up many times, I'd be 00:10:37.30\00:10:38.43 gone for months and months and 00:10:38.43\00:10:39.67 months then just without 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.57 calling anybody, I'd just come 00:10:41.57\00:10:42.87 and knock on the front door 00:10:42.87\00:10:44.07 and walk in the front door and 00:10:44.07\00:10:45.57 my dad was such a good man, 00:10:45.57\00:10:46.74 he had cancer, lots of pain, 00:10:46.74\00:10:50.48 but when I'd come in the door, 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.08 he'd jump off the couch 00:10:52.08\00:10:53.65 to come and see me. 00:10:53.65\00:10:54.88 >> Exactly, exactly. 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.22 >> So... 00:10:56.22\00:10:57.45 >> You didn't only sleep on 00:10:58.89\00:11:00.16 the streets... 00:11:00.16\00:11:00.92 >> Uh-uh. 00:11:00.92\00:11:01.89 >> What would help you? 00:11:01.89\00:11:02.99 You would retire 00:11:02.99\00:11:04.03 into libraries? 00:11:04.03\00:11:04.96 >> Yeah. [chuckles] 00:11:04.96\00:11:06.03 I sat in libraries. 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.60 It's cold in the winter time 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.20 and it's hot in the summer time 00:11:09.20\00:11:10.33 so the best place to sit is in 00:11:10.33\00:11:11.23 libraries and I sat in 00:11:11.23\00:11:12.73 libraries and studied. 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.30 And if you don't do something 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.04 in a library and you go to 00:11:16.04\00:11:17.44 sleep, and the library, 00:11:17.44\00:11:18.91 they'll kick you out so I 00:11:18.91\00:11:20.18 learned to study. 00:11:20.18\00:11:21.08 I hated school, 00:11:21.08\00:11:22.11 but I learned to study. 00:11:22.11\00:11:23.14 I studied philosophy, 00:11:23.14\00:11:24.48 psychology, sociology, 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.45 anthropology, metaphysics, 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.55 occult, and theology. 00:11:28.55\00:11:30.12 So I built information in my 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.62 head to stop the noise of the 00:11:31.62\00:11:33.36 guilt and the shame. 00:11:33.36\00:11:34.66 I've done wrong, 00:11:34.66\00:11:35.62 you are wrong. 00:11:35.62\00:11:36.73 I was an angry person, 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.29 angry, angry man. 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.93 I couldn't even talk without 00:11:39.93\00:11:40.93 showing anger. 00:11:40.93\00:11:42.26 My tone, my words, everything, 00:11:42.26\00:11:44.63 my body language was anger. 00:11:44.63\00:11:47.74 >> Did Christianity come into 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.81 your recovery? 00:11:50.81\00:11:52.34 >> Actually what became the 00:11:52.34\00:11:53.68 answer wasn't Christianity 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.71 because the people that were 00:11:55.71\00:11:57.38 telling me Jesus loved me were 00:11:57.38\00:11:58.91 the people that kicked me out 00:11:58.91\00:12:00.32 of the shelter because I 00:12:00.32\00:12:01.88 didn't follow their rules. 00:12:01.88\00:12:04.09 So as a homeless man, I didn't 00:12:04.09\00:12:05.89 fit into their mold how I 00:12:05.89\00:12:07.46 should behave, so I finally 00:12:07.46\00:12:09.29 said, "Give me a chance to" 00:12:09.29\00:12:11.86 "talk to everybody." 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.23 I got the manager, the 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.36 executive director, we all had 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.76 a conversation and I said to 00:12:15.76\00:12:16.97 him, "Does your Bible say" 00:12:16.97\00:12:18.77 "that if a man sins against" 00:12:18.77\00:12:20.30 "you seventy times seven in" 00:12:20.30\00:12:21.54 "one day you're supposed to" 00:12:21.54\00:12:22.67 "forgive him?" 00:12:22.67\00:12:23.44 And they couldn't answer that 00:12:23.44\00:12:24.51 question, I said, "Give me" 00:12:24.51\00:12:25.51 "a chance to prove to you" 00:12:25.51\00:12:26.74 "that I'm sorry and I'll" 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.44 "prove to you that I'm sorry." 00:12:28.44\00:12:29.51 And they gave me one chance. 00:12:29.51\00:12:30.65 I wasn't trying to be a 00:12:30.65\00:12:31.85 Christian, but when I put the 00:12:31.85\00:12:34.35 principles of scripture into 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.55 practice to show these people 00:12:36.55\00:12:38.05 to be hypocrites, my mind got 00:12:38.05\00:12:40.06 clear, my mind came back 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.92 and I went, "What?" 00:12:41.92\00:12:43.16 And the only thing I could 00:12:43.16\00:12:44.29 conclude was it was me 00:12:44.29\00:12:45.76 implementing the principles of 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.00 scripture that gave me the 00:12:47.00\00:12:48.30 ability to find the clarity, 00:12:48.30\00:12:50.30 to find the strength to begin 00:12:50.30\00:12:51.87 the real change in my life. 00:12:51.87\00:12:54.60 So it was the word of God that 00:12:54.60\00:12:56.47 gave me back-- that started my 00:12:56.47\00:12:58.04 journey back and then it's my 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.04 faith in Christ of course that 00:13:00.04\00:13:02.04 carries me through, but it was 00:13:02.04\00:13:04.25 using the principles from 00:13:04.25\00:13:05.55 scripture, the Divine Word of 00:13:05.55\00:13:07.55 God that when I got that book 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.92 and then I applied the 00:13:09.92\00:13:11.12 principles, boom! 00:13:11.12\00:13:12.25 I got my mind back 00:13:12.25\00:13:13.46 and then began a whole 00:13:13.46\00:13:14.66 new transformation. 00:13:14.66\00:13:15.82 [Rene] Wow! 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.49 [Mike] I want you to talk 00:13:17.49\00:13:18.63 about that model that you used 00:13:18.63\00:13:20.90 that you came to, but before 00:13:20.90\00:13:23.50 we do that, I want us to 00:13:23.50\00:13:25.07 listen to a song and this is 00:13:25.07\00:13:27.04 sung by some students up in the 00:13:27.04\00:13:29.17 mountains of British Columbia, 00:13:29.17\00:13:30.37 it's called 00:13:30.37\00:13:31.64 I Know Whom I Have Believed. 00:13:31.64\00:13:34.34 ¤I know not why God's 00:13:36.64\00:13:39.35 ¤wondrous grace 00:13:39.35\00:13:40.78 ¤To me He hath made known 00:13:40.78\00:13:44.92 ¤Nor why, unworthy, 00:14:38.61\00:14:43.51 ¤I know not 00:14:43.51\00:14:45.11 ¤how the Spirit moves 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.88 ¤Convincing men of sin 00:14:47.88\00:14:51.99 ¤Revealing Jesus 00:14:51.99\00:14:54.89 committed 00:16:02.56\00:16:04.49 ¤Unto Him against that day 00:16:04.49\00:16:11.43 >> Those students are so brave 00:16:12.87\00:16:14.37 to be outside singing on a 00:16:14.37\00:16:16.40 cold winter's day with snow on 00:16:16.40\00:16:18.17 the ground up in the mountains 00:16:18.17\00:16:20.01 of British Columbia. 00:16:20.01\00:16:21.91 The words of this song that 00:16:21.91\00:16:23.95 really spoke to me are these: 00:16:23.95\00:16:26.38 "I know not how" 00:16:26.38\00:16:28.02 "the Spirit moves," 00:16:28.02\00:16:29.52 "Convincing men of sin," 00:16:29.52\00:16:31.49 "Revealing Jesus" 00:16:31.49\00:16:33.02 "through the Word," 00:16:33.02\00:16:34.79 "Creating faith in Him." 00:16:34.79\00:16:37.43 >> So, Daniel, you started 00:16:37.43\00:16:40.60 reading the Bible, and that 00:16:40.60\00:16:42.96 was a transformational 00:16:42.96\00:16:44.40 experience for you. 00:16:44.40\00:16:45.67 You had received a Bible from 00:16:45.67\00:16:47.37 Aubrey when you were younger, 00:16:47.37\00:16:48.50 but now you're looking at it 00:16:48.50\00:16:49.70 with new eyes. 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.04 You're in a position where 00:16:51.04\00:16:52.67 you're just like, "I need" 00:16:52.67\00:16:53.84 "healing 'cause nothing" 00:16:53.84\00:16:55.21 "else is working." 00:16:55.21\00:16:56.41 So what kind of model did you 00:16:56.41\00:16:57.58 come up with? 00:16:57.58\00:16:58.68 What did God show you? 00:16:58.68\00:17:00.45 >> You know, my-- I got all my 00:17:00.45\00:17:02.42 psychiatric records given-- 00:17:02.42\00:17:03.65 gotten for me, all of them, 00:17:03.65\00:17:05.52 a stack of them like this of 00:17:05.52\00:17:07.42 all the years that I'd spent 00:17:07.42\00:17:09.16 in the psychiatric wards and 00:17:09.16\00:17:11.33 I read the psychiatric 00:17:11.33\00:17:12.63 reports, I read everything 00:17:12.63\00:17:14.00 they wrote about me, the 00:17:14.00\00:17:15.00 nurses note, the doctors 00:17:15.00\00:17:16.30 notes, the good stuff, the bad 00:17:16.30\00:17:18.13 stuff, I counted the mental 00:17:18.13\00:17:20.44 disorders the gave me and they 00:17:20.44\00:17:21.64 gave me 22 of them different 00:17:21.64\00:17:23.27 times they couldn't 00:17:23.27\00:17:24.67 figure me out. 00:17:24.67\00:17:25.77 I was on 18 psychotropic 00:17:25.77\00:17:26.88 pills a day. 00:17:26.88\00:17:29.04 On the DSM IV they have a 00:17:29.04\00:17:31.55 thing called acc-- the fifth 00:17:31.55\00:17:33.62 access and it's the access 00:17:33.62\00:17:35.45 they use for socialization and 00:17:35.45\00:17:37.19 working in a community, what's 00:17:37.19\00:17:38.35 your mental well-being for 00:17:38.35\00:17:39.65 that and mine in that access 00:17:39.65\00:17:41.12 was long-term 00:17:41.12\00:17:42.46 institutionalization, it 00:17:42.46\00:17:44.13 doesn't look like you'll ever 00:17:44.13\00:17:45.26 stop being a transient 00:17:45.26\00:17:46.43 homeless man. 00:17:46.43\00:17:47.60 So they had written me off and 00:17:47.60\00:17:48.93 I'm already written off 00:17:48.93\00:17:50.10 because I'm living in a 00:17:50.10\00:17:51.30 long-term care group home 00:17:51.30\00:17:52.53 because I didn't have the 00:17:52.53\00:17:53.84 ability to care for myself. 00:17:53.84\00:17:55.10 So I picked up the Bible that 00:17:55.10\00:17:56.67 I've always had with me for 00:17:56.67\00:17:58.11 all those years and I started 00:17:58.11\00:17:59.77 to look for solutions and I 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.14 realized that, like I said, 00:18:01.14\00:18:04.35 I realized that something had 00:18:04.35\00:18:06.58 to change and nothing was 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.18 working for me, they had 00:18:08.18\00:18:09.52 written me off and my only 00:18:09.52\00:18:11.32 solution was to come up with 00:18:11.32\00:18:12.79 something so I said a prayer, 00:18:12.79\00:18:14.19 I suppose I did, I mean I did 00:18:14.19\00:18:16.39 a lot of thinking and I know 00:18:16.39\00:18:17.56 there were some 00:18:17.56\00:18:18.66 prayers in there. 00:18:18.66\00:18:19.66 I used to sing a song, 00:18:19.66\00:18:20.50 Pour Your Healing Oil 00:18:20.50\00:18:21.56 Through Me, just to myself 00:18:21.56\00:18:22.56 and that kind of stirred 00:18:22.56\00:18:23.63 up my faith, right? 00:18:23.63\00:18:25.37 And by stirring up my faith, 00:18:25.37\00:18:26.84 the scriptures started to come 00:18:26.84\00:18:28.10 alive a bit and so I realized 00:18:28.10\00:18:30.41 if I took the word of God at 00:18:30.41\00:18:32.07 what it was, I could 00:18:32.07\00:18:33.01 do it again. 00:18:33.01\00:18:34.31 So John 3:7, alright, it says 00:18:34.31\00:18:36.64 you must be born again. 00:18:36.64\00:18:37.95 I said, "Wait a minute." 00:18:37.95\00:18:39.58 Now I'd studied psychology 00:18:39.58\00:18:40.85 enough to know that when a 00:18:40.85\00:18:42.08 child is born, they're born 00:18:42.08\00:18:43.32 with nothing more than a few 00:18:43.32\00:18:44.85 imprints that come from birth 00:18:44.85\00:18:45.95 and some genetic things, 00:18:45.95\00:18:47.72 everything else they learn, 00:18:47.72\00:18:48.79 they learn by experience. 00:18:48.79\00:18:50.29 And from experience after 00:18:50.29\00:18:51.46 experience when a child, 00:18:51.46\00:18:52.69 you know, is growing up they 00:18:52.69\00:18:54.56 learn by crying at a certain 00:18:54.56\00:18:55.80 time in a certain way, they 00:18:55.80\00:18:57.20 get a certain thing so they 00:18:57.20\00:18:58.43 start to create memories 00:18:58.43\00:19:00.34 and those memories lead to 00:19:00.34\00:19:01.57 their emotions. 00:19:01.57\00:19:02.87 If the experiences are good, 00:19:02.87\00:19:04.14 because the-- the experience 00:19:04.14\00:19:05.57 has been good, the memory is 00:19:05.57\00:19:06.57 good, the emotions will be a 00:19:06.57\00:19:08.04 positive response, if not, 00:19:08.04\00:19:09.84 it'll all be negative, right? 00:19:09.84\00:19:11.58 It's just destructive and so 00:19:11.58\00:19:13.21 people think and feel based on 00:19:13.21\00:19:14.82 those things so when I said, 00:19:14.82\00:19:16.58 "you must be born again" and 00:19:16.58\00:19:18.09 the scripture said it, but-- 00:19:18.09\00:19:19.79 Born again, I mean, I can 00:19:19.79\00:19:21.06 build this all over again, 00:19:21.06\00:19:22.59 I can start again if I give 00:19:22.59\00:19:23.79 myself a reference point. 00:19:23.79\00:19:26.33 So December had rolled around 00:19:26.33\00:19:27.66 and I'd done all the 00:19:27.66\00:19:28.76 evaluations and looked at 00:19:28.76\00:19:29.83 myself, I was in rough shape. 00:19:29.83\00:19:32.33 I went out in the snow of 00:19:32.33\00:19:34.54 Lake Simcoe on the frozen lake 00:19:34.54\00:19:36.27 at about 11:30, sat down and 00:19:36.27\00:19:38.94 waited for 12:01 to roll 00:19:38.94\00:19:40.71 around when New Year's Eve 00:19:40.71\00:19:42.31 2000, new millennium, it will 00:19:42.31\00:19:44.05 never happen in my life again, 00:19:44.05\00:19:45.51 it could be a mark reference 00:19:45.51\00:19:46.78 point for me and that's when I 00:19:46.78\00:19:48.55 put myself foot forward and I 00:19:48.55\00:19:50.19 said, "I'm no longer gonna" 00:19:50.19\00:19:50.85 "be a statistic." 00:19:50.85\00:19:52.02 I used to feel bad about not 00:19:52.02\00:19:53.29 measuring up to my sister's-- 00:19:53.29\00:19:55.19 she's been very good at what 00:19:55.19\00:19:56.39 she does, she's very 00:19:56.39\00:19:57.53 successful-- she was, and I 00:19:57.53\00:19:59.06 always lived in her shadow... 00:19:59.06\00:20:00.53 >> She was your twin sister? 00:20:00.53\00:20:01.70 >> My twin sister, right. 00:20:01.70\00:20:03.00 And she's a great girl, I love 00:20:03.00\00:20:04.90 her with all my heart, right? 00:20:04.90\00:20:06.53 But I always tried to measure 00:20:06.53\00:20:07.87 up to what I thought her 00:20:07.87\00:20:09.00 quality was and I never felt 00:20:09.00\00:20:10.07 accepted by my quality, 00:20:10.07\00:20:11.71 but I decided now I was gonna 00:20:11.71\00:20:13.94 go back to factory reboot. 00:20:13.94\00:20:15.71 I was gonna start all over 00:20:15.71\00:20:16.85 again and rebuild me. 00:20:16.85\00:20:18.51 And that's what I started and I 00:20:18.51\00:20:19.78 built the model that said if I 00:20:19.78\00:20:22.02 create a vision of who I am, 00:20:22.02\00:20:24.25 then I fill myself with the 00:20:24.25\00:20:25.49 knowledge I need to learn 00:20:25.49\00:20:27.06 to fulfill that vision that I 00:20:27.06\00:20:28.32 have clearly with myself, 00:20:28.32\00:20:31.49 that switched my emotional 00:20:31.49\00:20:33.23 lifestyle of being emotional 00:20:33.23\00:20:35.00 and acting emotional, 00:20:35.00\00:20:36.56 to be driven by a passion. 00:20:36.56\00:20:38.73 And a passion is different 00:20:38.73\00:20:39.97 than an emotion because a 00:20:39.97\00:20:41.40 passion burns low and it goes. 00:20:41.40\00:20:44.64 Emotions are erratic and all 00:20:44.64\00:20:46.11 over the place. 00:20:46.11\00:20:47.48 Passion burns all the time, 00:20:47.48\00:20:48.44 it's a low-burning ember. 00:20:48.44\00:20:50.11 That's-- right? And... 00:20:50.11\00:20:51.91 in fact that is 00:20:51.91\00:20:53.52 the literal meaning of the 00:20:53.52\00:20:54.68 word "passion," right? 00:20:54.68\00:20:56.15 And it just switched my 00:20:56.15\00:20:58.09 pattern and I set my goals on 00:20:58.09\00:20:59.15 new things and I set my 00:20:59.15\00:21:00.66 objective on new things and I 00:21:00.66\00:21:02.16 decided I was no longer gonna 00:21:02.16\00:21:03.16 be a statistic, I was gonna 00:21:03.16\00:21:04.96 make a change and that started 00:21:04.96\00:21:06.53 in January 1st, 2000 and 00:21:06.53\00:21:08.13 hasn't stopped. 00:21:08.13\00:21:09.16 >> Wow! 00:21:09.16\00:21:09.83 >> Praise God. 00:21:09.83\00:21:10.87 >> And so, Daniel, 00:21:10.87\00:21:12.60 Jesus set you free. 00:21:12.60\00:21:15.00 >> Without a shadow 00:21:15.00\00:21:16.07 of a doubt. 00:21:16.07\00:21:17.47 >> And you were set free from 00:21:17.47\00:21:20.21 alcohol, from street drugs, 00:21:20.21\00:21:22.94 antidepressants, anti-anxiety, 00:21:22.94\00:21:25.68 and so many other medications, 00:21:25.68\00:21:28.72 right, set free from that. 00:21:28.72\00:21:30.32 So what motivated you 00:21:30.32\00:21:33.49 to keep on going? 00:21:33.49\00:21:35.46 >> At first I wanted to make a 00:21:35.46\00:21:36.96 change, I wanted my mom to be 00:21:36.96\00:21:38.43 proud of me so I pushed and I 00:21:38.43\00:21:40.86 pushed and I pushed so that 00:21:40.86\00:21:43.73 before she died she would 00:21:43.73\00:21:46.33 see that I had made a change. 00:21:46.33\00:21:48.60 I was supposed to appear 00:21:48.60\00:21:49.87 before a parliamentary 00:21:49.87\00:21:50.94 standing committee to talk 00:21:50.94\00:21:52.07 about poverty and 00:21:52.07\00:21:53.48 homelessness. 00:21:53.48\00:21:54.64 The day they buried my 00:21:54.64\00:21:56.38 mother, I was at that 00:21:56.38\00:21:57.55 committee speaking at that 00:21:57.55\00:21:58.91 committee 'cause I had 00:21:58.91\00:22:00.38 destroyed my family relations 00:22:00.38\00:22:02.35 to such a point that it would 00:22:02.35\00:22:03.32 be best if I didn't go home. 00:22:03.32\00:22:05.42 So I didn't go home, 00:22:08.39\00:22:10.36 but I gave honour to my mother 00:22:10.36\00:22:12.36 by speaking at Parliament Hill 00:22:12.36\00:22:14.60 on the issues of poverty 00:22:14.60\00:22:15.86 and homelessness, 00:22:15.86\00:22:17.37 which was my goal. 00:22:17.37\00:22:18.87 And then my reputation ran in 00:22:18.87\00:22:20.34 front of me. 00:22:20.34\00:22:21.57 I started working with the 00:22:21.57\00:22:22.57 nurses at York University as a 00:22:22.57\00:22:23.84 preceptor, using my voice of 00:22:23.84\00:22:25.51 lived experience and the lived 00:22:25.51\00:22:27.41 experience to demystify 00:22:27.41\00:22:29.31 poverty and homelessness and 00:22:29.31\00:22:30.55 then I got-- it goes on. 00:22:30.55\00:22:32.91 I put over 200 students 00:22:32.91\00:22:34.78 through placement, nurse-- 00:22:34.78\00:22:36.52 about 100 nurses at least 00:22:36.52\00:22:37.95 through placement and I'd 00:22:37.95\00:22:40.06 teach about what it means to 00:22:40.06\00:22:41.42 be poor and how to adjust and 00:22:41.42\00:22:43.09 treat the poor differently. 00:22:43.09\00:22:44.66 The GAP committee is a 00:22:44.66\00:22:45.73 committee I'm on in Durham 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.03 Region with Mayor Dan Carter, 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.77 Councillor Rick Kerr... 00:22:50.77\00:22:52.63 I am the assistant director to 00:22:52.63\00:22:55.34 Ann Thompson at New Life 00:22:55.34\00:22:57.51 Neighbourhood food bank and my 00:22:57.51\00:23:00.04 job is community engagement, 00:23:00.04\00:23:02.28 we've got the SLIP program 00:23:02.28\00:23:03.55 going there which is a true 00:23:03.55\00:23:04.65 potential program 00:23:04.65\00:23:06.08 and it talks about identifying 00:23:06.08\00:23:08.08 the real you and once you find 00:23:08.08\00:23:09.32 the real you, you won't sell 00:23:09.32\00:23:10.35 yourself short. 00:23:10.35\00:23:12.15 So we have students running 00:23:12.15\00:23:13.29 for that, Self-Empowerment 00:23:13.29\00:23:14.46 Livelihood Improvement 00:23:14.46\00:23:15.79 Project, phenomenal program 00:23:15.79\00:23:17.46 watching the results take 00:23:17.46\00:23:18.43 place and people's lives 00:23:18.43\00:23:21.53 coming alive because they're 00:23:21.53\00:23:23.47 seeing themselves and their 00:23:23.47\00:23:24.87 true value and they're not 00:23:24.87\00:23:25.93 accepting anybody's opinion of 00:23:25.93\00:23:27.27 themselves, they've found 00:23:27.27\00:23:28.54 their own true worth and we 00:23:28.54\00:23:29.44 move forward with them 00:23:29.44\00:23:30.54 from there. 00:23:30.54\00:23:31.57 I have enough success in front 00:23:31.57\00:23:33.07 of me now to mitigate all the 00:23:33.07\00:23:35.74 failures behind me. 00:23:35.74\00:23:36.91 I've just switched 00:23:36.91\00:23:38.08 the game plan. 00:23:38.08\00:23:39.31 >> And the Lord has just 00:23:39.31\00:23:40.85 worked miraculously. 00:23:40.85\00:23:42.25 >> If it wasn't for the Lord 00:23:42.25\00:23:45.12 who was on my side, 00:23:45.12\00:23:46.55 where would I be?
