00:12:29.64\00:12:32.28 >> Yes, that's a very 00:12:32.28\00:12:33.55 common thing. 00:12:33.55\00:12:35.92 Not so much when you don't 00:12:35.92\00:12:37.52 deploy, but when you deploy 00:12:37.52\00:12:40.52 or you have to go for the 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.89 summer on a task and teach 00:12:42.89\00:12:44.93 somewhere for three or four 00:12:44.93\00:12:46.26 months and you're not home, 00:12:46.26\00:12:47.96 then obviously, 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.16 it's inevitable that there 00:12:49.16\00:12:50.43 will be... 00:12:50.43\00:12:54.20 disruptions in the 00:12:54.20\00:12:55.34 family life. 00:12:55.34\00:12:56.87 For example, you're not there 00:12:56.87\00:13:00.18 when your child or your 00:13:00.18\00:13:02.94 children get sick and they 00:13:02.94\00:13:05.41 need to be taken to 00:13:05.41\00:13:06.41 the hospital, 00:13:06.41\00:13:07.72 you're not there when the roof 00:13:07.72\00:13:09.08 starts leaking, 00:13:09.08\00:13:10.92 you're not there when there is 00:13:10.92\00:13:12.35 an issue with the car and 00:13:12.35\00:13:15.22 yes, you're out there doing a 00:13:15.22\00:13:17.16 very important job, but it's 00:13:17.16\00:13:19.66 just as important holding the 00:13:19.66\00:13:21.90 fort back home and that many 00:13:21.90\00:13:24.13 times places, inevitably, 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.03 strain on relationships 00:13:26.03\00:13:28.80 to the point that for some 00:13:28.80\00:13:33.04 traits that require people to 00:13:33.04\00:13:35.04 be away for long periods 00:13:35.04\00:13:36.01 of time, 00:13:36.01\00:13:37.85 the rate of divorces in the 00:13:37.85\00:13:39.58 forces is fairly high. 00:13:39.58\00:13:41.02 Yeah. 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.78 >> That makes sense. 00:13:42.78\00:13:44.32 >> And personally, 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.25 how did it affect you? 00:13:46.25\00:13:48.39 You know, did you experience 00:13:48.39\00:13:50.49 any kind of trauma going off 00:13:50.49\00:13:52.43 in these combat situations. 00:13:52.43\00:13:54.63 >> Yes, that's 00:13:54.63\00:13:56.63 actually a good point. 00:13:56.63\00:13:58.60 When you're conducting what we 00:13:58.60\00:14:01.67 call pre-deployment training, 00:14:01.67\00:14:03.47 and even if you're not 00:14:03.47\00:14:04.94 deploying, you get these 00:14:04.94\00:14:06.94 lectures and you get these 00:14:06.94\00:14:09.11 specialists coming and talking 00:14:09.11\00:14:10.51 to you saying, well, if and 00:14:10.51\00:14:14.72 when you get exposed to 00:14:14.72\00:14:16.75 X or Y... 00:14:16.75\00:14:18.79 domestically or abroad, 00:14:21.46\00:14:24.13 then chances are that 00:14:24.13\00:14:26.43 your brain will react this 00:14:26.43\00:14:27.56 way or that way, 00:14:27.56\00:14:28.96 you could develop what, 00:14:28.96\00:14:29.93 you know... 00:14:29.93\00:14:32.40 what some people call PTSD. 00:14:32.40\00:14:34.60 Or maybe just maybe 00:14:34.60\00:14:36.27 depression, or just maybe 00:14:36.27\00:14:37.71 anxiety, and a whole bunch of 00:14:37.71\00:14:38.74 things can come up to 00:14:38.74\00:14:39.81 the surface and not 00:14:39.81\00:14:40.71 necessarily right away. 00:14:40.71\00:14:41.98 >> So you were told this in 00:14:41.98\00:14:42.81 the training. 00:14:42.81\00:14:43.48 >> Yes. 00:14:43.48\00:14:44.75 >> What did you think of that? 00:14:44.75\00:14:45.65 >> You are told that in 00:14:45.65\00:14:46.75 pre-deployment training very 00:14:46.75\00:14:47.75 clearly and nowadays it's even 00:14:47.75\00:14:49.62 part of your, what we call on 00:14:49.62\00:14:52.22 the street, boot camp or basic 00:14:52.22\00:14:53.86 training as well. 00:14:53.86\00:14:55.19 So from that point on, people 00:14:55.19\00:14:56.69 are made aware of that, but 00:14:56.69\00:14:58.16 personally I-- 00:14:58.16\00:15:00.66 back in the day I was feeling 00:15:00.66\00:15:04.43 too much on top of the world. 00:15:04.43\00:15:06.50 I was super fit, I was... 00:15:06.50\00:15:10.24 enjoying my trade and anything 00:15:10.24\00:15:12.57 related to it. 00:15:12.57\00:15:13.84 And I thought, oh-- 00:15:13.84\00:15:15.81 I carelessly dismissed it. 00:15:15.81\00:15:18.45 I was like, "Oh, that's for" 00:15:18.45\00:15:19.71 "people who are weak-minded." 00:15:19.71\00:15:22.52 "That's not me." 00:15:22.52\00:15:24.49 "That's not really me." 00:15:24.49\00:15:25.79 And well... 00:15:25.79\00:15:28.22 And I saw some comrades 00:15:28.22\00:15:30.99 in arms go through it. 00:15:30.99\00:15:33.63 Some of them years after they 00:15:33.63\00:15:35.40 were exposed to, 00:15:35.40\00:15:37.07 whatever they were exposed to 00:15:37.07\00:15:37.93 and then it just 00:15:37.93\00:15:39.17 came out of nowhere. 00:15:39.17\00:15:40.57 Um, so... 00:15:40.57\00:15:44.37 You end up with these 00:15:44.37\00:15:46.31 situations, for example in the 00:15:46.31\00:15:48.44 case of the PTSD, I really 00:15:48.44\00:15:50.25 like this ex-U.S. Marine guy 00:15:50.25\00:15:54.18 that he has it and then he has 00:15:54.18\00:15:58.52 this organization, non-profit, 00:15:58.52\00:16:00.79 in which he tries to help a 00:16:00.79\00:16:02.56 lot of veterans through it, 00:16:02.56\00:16:05.59 but he doesn't call it PTSD 00:16:05.59\00:16:07.30 which stands for, as we know, 00:16:07.30\00:16:09.36 Post Traumatic 00:16:09.36\00:16:10.33 Stress Syndrome. 00:16:10.33\00:16:11.40 He calls it 00:16:11.40\00:16:12.47 Post Traumatic Stress. 00:16:12.47\00:16:14.90 He leaves-- PTS, 00:16:14.90\00:16:16.84 he leaves the syndrome behind 00:16:16.84\00:16:20.78 because he says it's not a 00:16:20.78\00:16:22.28 syndrome, it's-- 00:16:22.28\00:16:24.81 It can happen to anyone. 00:16:24.81\00:16:26.88 So it's just stress-related 00:16:26.88\00:16:29.58 mental injury. 00:16:29.58\00:16:31.49 And so, you know, once you 00:16:31.49\00:16:33.82 have PTSD, due to whatever it 00:16:33.82\00:16:36.29 is that you were exposed to, 00:16:36.29\00:16:39.63 it'll never go away. 00:16:39.63\00:16:41.30 So from that point on, 00:16:41.30\00:16:42.73 you have to recognize that 00:16:42.73\00:16:44.97 you have it and you have to 00:16:44.97\00:16:47.00 really be willing to seek and 00:16:47.00\00:16:50.27 receive help and work hard at 00:16:50.27\00:16:52.74 trying to learn how to live 00:16:52.74\00:16:54.51 with it and still be somewhat 00:16:54.51\00:16:56.78 a useful member to society and 00:16:56.78\00:16:58.48 to, in my case, 00:16:58.48\00:16:59.81 my church, right? 00:16:59.81\00:17:01.38 And to people around me 00:17:01.38\00:17:03.12 instead of being-- 00:17:03.12\00:17:05.12 dragging everybody around you 00:17:05.12\00:17:06.92 down, which can easily happen. 00:17:06.92\00:17:09.29 >> So when you were young and 00:17:09.29\00:17:12.56 you were new in the military, 00:17:12.56\00:17:14.56 you felt, "I'm invincible." 00:17:14.56\00:17:17.03 "This is never gonna happen" 00:17:17.03\00:17:18.17 "to me..." and... 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.47 >> That's for weak people. 00:17:19.47\00:17:20.77 >> It's for weak people. 00:17:20.77\00:17:21.57 >> Yeah. 00:17:21.57\00:17:22.57 Was I ever wrong. 00:17:22.57\00:17:23.27 >> Yeah. 00:17:23.27\00:17:24.31 So how did it hit you? 00:17:24.31\00:17:26.11 >> Little weird things. 00:17:26.11\00:17:28.71 Back from the Balkans, 00:17:28.71\00:17:30.71 back there in theatre, 00:17:30.71\00:17:32.18 the Military Police, 00:17:32.18\00:17:34.15 the Canadian Military Police, 00:17:34.15\00:17:35.55 they use a very specific model 00:17:35.55\00:17:36.99 of American-made vehicle, 00:17:36.99\00:17:39.99 four-door vehicle, white. 00:17:39.99\00:17:42.76 And then it didn't really 00:17:42.76\00:17:44.89 click for me right away, 00:17:44.89\00:17:46.70 but I felt-- I felt like... 00:17:46.70\00:17:50.40 flushing, like when you get 00:17:50.40\00:17:52.47 red in your face. 00:17:52.47\00:17:54.04 I felt like that every time I 00:17:54.04\00:17:55.60 would see back home, after 00:17:55.60\00:17:57.57 deployment, I would see that 00:17:57.57\00:17:58.77 type of car, 00:17:58.77\00:18:00.24 but it never crossed my mind 00:18:00.24\00:18:01.44 that, "Oh, that's because" 00:18:01.44\00:18:02.74 "this is the same car that--" 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.75 >> So it was an association. 00:18:04.75\00:18:06.05 >> Yeah, but I wasn't really-- 00:18:06.05\00:18:07.88 >> Making the connection. 00:18:07.88\00:18:08.98 >> No, I wasn't really 00:18:08.98\00:18:09.68 connecting or putting 00:18:09.68\00:18:10.59 two and two together. 00:18:10.59\00:18:11.92 And then I would go and pick up 00:18:11.92\00:18:12.92 my daughter at 00:18:12.92\00:18:14.29 Deer Lake School, 00:18:14.29\00:18:15.82 she was in grade one, 00:18:15.82\00:18:18.39 and she'd be across the field, 00:18:18.39\00:18:21.66 totally at the end of the 00:18:21.66\00:18:22.66 sports field 00:18:22.66\00:18:23.77 and I had to actually-- 00:18:23.77\00:18:25.63 the first time I started 00:18:25.63\00:18:26.94 walking on the grass 00:18:26.94\00:18:27.97 and I didn't-- 00:18:27.97\00:18:29.07 I stopped and I couldn't go 00:18:29.07\00:18:30.47 forward and I had to actually 00:18:30.47\00:18:32.21 get a teacher to get her for 00:18:32.21\00:18:33.61 me because for so long 00:18:33.61\00:18:36.78 we were drilling in our heads, 00:18:36.78\00:18:37.98 like, in the area that you're 00:18:37.98\00:18:39.85 deploying guys it has one 00:18:39.85\00:18:41.52 of the highest concentrations 00:18:41.52\00:18:43.15 of unexploded mines and 00:18:43.15\00:18:45.19 ordinance in the world 00:18:45.19\00:18:46.86 and so wherever you go, 00:18:46.86\00:18:48.59 be mindful of this, 00:18:48.59\00:18:49.26 don't do this, 00:18:49.26\00:18:50.16 don't that, don't-- 00:18:50.16\00:18:51.66 Only go through approved, 00:18:51.66\00:18:52.79 clear routes, etcetera. 00:18:52.79\00:18:54.76 And then don't ever walk 00:18:54.76\00:18:56.16 on grass. 00:18:56.16\00:18:57.33 And so little things, but 00:18:57.33\00:18:58.80 you know, I said, "OK." 00:18:58.80\00:19:00.04 "That's gonna come and pass." 00:19:00.04\00:19:01.10 And it did pass. 00:19:01.10\00:19:02.94 And these dreams that are so 00:19:02.94\00:19:06.24 over done by Hollywood in 00:19:06.24\00:19:07.61 which you wake up 00:19:07.61\00:19:08.68 covered in sweat. 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.35 Well, that happened to me, 00:19:10.35\00:19:11.55 but that did pass. 00:19:11.55\00:19:14.05 And things got 00:19:14.05\00:19:15.68 quiet for a while. 00:19:15.68\00:19:17.65 When I was going through, 00:19:17.65\00:19:22.92 just prior to being released, 00:19:22.92\00:19:24.79 going through the realization 00:19:24.79\00:19:27.30 with the help of the military 00:19:27.30\00:19:28.63 doctor about my hip injury and 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.30 that it wasn't going to get 00:19:30.30\00:19:31.47 any better and my lower back, 00:19:31.47\00:19:33.10 that it wasn't going to get 00:19:33.10\00:19:34.77 magically better and I was 00:19:34.77\00:19:36.77 gonna be released, 00:19:36.77\00:19:38.11 I think that 00:19:38.11\00:19:39.97 that was a catalyzer 00:19:39.97\00:19:42.18 and then these things really 00:19:42.18\00:19:43.91 hit me hard. 00:19:43.91\00:19:44.78 And... 00:19:44.78\00:19:47.42 there were some days and 00:19:47.42\00:19:50.62 I would lay on the couch in my 00:19:50.62\00:19:52.95 living room, blinds closed, 00:19:52.95\00:19:56.62 doors locked, windows locked, 00:19:56.62\00:20:00.16 TV off, not listening to 00:20:00.16\00:20:03.67 music, not reading a book, 00:20:03.67\00:20:04.77 just laying there, 00:20:04.77\00:20:06.90 not even wanting to eat. 00:20:06.90\00:20:09.07 And so that is a very slippery 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.51 slope and if you don't do 00:20:10.51\00:20:13.01 something about it, with a bit 00:20:13.01\00:20:15.88 of a sense of urgency, 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.08 sometimes that's a slope that 00:20:18.08\00:20:20.28 you cannot climb back out of. 00:20:20.28\00:20:21.45 Yeah. 00:20:21.45\00:20:22.72 >> What did you do? 00:20:22.72\00:20:24.32 [exhales] 00:20:24.32\00:20:26.12 >> Um... 00:20:26.12\00:20:27.36 Eventually, I realized my only 00:20:27.36\00:20:33.09 wise choice would be to seek 00:20:33.09\00:20:35.90 help and to try to work on it. 00:20:35.90\00:20:38.80 And I also was reminded, 00:20:38.80\00:20:43.07 first lovingly and then a 00:20:43.07\00:20:44.74 little more energetically 00:20:44.74\00:20:46.88 by God that 00:20:46.88\00:20:48.91 regardless of what I had, 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.95 I was still expected to go 00:20:50.95\00:20:53.68 and serve. 00:20:53.68\00:20:54.85 I had been the sound team 00:20:54.85\00:20:57.99 leader at my church for a 00:20:57.99\00:20:59.25 long time so 00:20:59.25\00:21:01.49 God told me that He was still 00:21:01.49\00:21:02.92 expecting me to go and fulfill 00:21:02.92\00:21:05.33 that volunteer role and to go 00:21:05.33\00:21:09.00 to Africa and help out for 00:21:09.00\00:21:11.37 a month somewhere and 00:21:11.37\00:21:15.30 not to be so obnoxious to 00:21:15.30\00:21:16.84 people around me. 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.84 Sometimes when you have these 00:21:18.84\00:21:20.54 mental illnesses you go from 00:21:20.54\00:21:23.35 being a pushover to being 00:21:23.35\00:21:26.38 extremely angry at everything 00:21:26.38\00:21:28.02 for nothing. 00:21:28.02\00:21:29.38 And so I was like-- 00:21:29.38\00:21:32.45 Then I realized, like yeah, 00:21:32.45\00:21:34.56 if I don't do anything 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.99 either I'm going to commit 00:21:36.99\00:21:38.53 suicide or I probably would 00:21:38.53\00:21:40.53 end up as an alcoholic or a 00:21:40.53\00:21:42.00 drug addict or 00:21:42.00\00:21:43.57 all of the above, 00:21:43.57\00:21:45.47 hurting someone, and 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.74 unfortunately they do teach 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.40 you how to do that so 00:21:49.40\00:21:51.51 that would have been bad. 00:21:51.51\00:21:53.94 So God made a big push 00:21:53.94\00:21:57.21 through a variety of ways, 00:21:57.21\00:21:58.78 directly and indirectly, 00:21:58.78\00:21:59.75 like, "Hey." 00:21:59.75\00:22:01.62 "Yes, you have this, but" 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.42 "do something about it." 00:22:03.42\00:22:04.89 It's not good enough to sit 00:22:04.89\00:22:06.15 there and mope. 00:22:06.15\00:22:09.42 I'm glad that I had God and I 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.09 still do have God for that 00:22:12.09\00:22:13.80 because this trouble is real 00:22:13.80\00:22:16.00 on a week to week basis. 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.83 Some weeks are good, some 00:22:17.83\00:22:19.57 weeks are not so good, but... 00:22:19.57\00:22:24.34 through people, through things 00:22:24.34\00:22:26.41 that were lined up in front of 00:22:26.41\00:22:28.34 me, God made it very clear to 00:22:28.34\00:22:31.11 me that I needed to, you know, 00:22:31.11\00:22:33.88 take action which is not easy 00:22:33.88\00:22:35.98 and, yeah, so I-- 00:22:35.98\00:22:39.55 I mean, of course I'm thankful 00:22:39.55\00:22:40.69 that He is my God, but-- 00:22:40.69\00:22:43.32 and even more thankful beyond 00:22:43.32\00:22:46.06 words and thoughts because He 00:22:46.06\00:22:49.50 still shows me the way to 00:22:49.50\00:22:51.13 actually go and try to work on 00:22:51.13\00:22:53.94 my things. 00:22:53.94\00:22:56.47 I have friends from the forces 00:22:56.47\00:23:00.44 that are not with me anymore 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.34 because they committed suicide 00:23:02.34\00:23:04.51 because of mental illness. 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.08 I have friends that are not 00:23:06.08\00:23:09.05 dead but are alcoholics 00:23:09.05\00:23:11.89 and drug addicts and 00:23:11.89\00:23:13.99 yes, so I could have 00:23:13.99\00:23:16.56 just as easily been 00:23:16.56\00:23:17.99 one of them, 00:23:17.99\00:23:19.16 end up like that. 00:23:19.16\00:23:21.03 God has a purpose for everyone 00:23:21.03\00:23:22.76 and in my particular case, 00:23:22.76\00:23:25.10 He reminded me that... 00:23:25.10\00:23:28.54 I guess He wasn't done with me 00:23:28.54\00:23:30.31 yet. 00:23:30.31\00:23:31.44 >> How important is 00:23:31.44\00:23:32.27 God to you? 00:23:32.27\00:23:34.61 Umm... 00:23:34.61\00:23:36.38 >> He's always been 00:23:36.38\00:23:37.25 important to me. 00:23:37.25\00:23:40.12 But through my physical 00:23:40.12\00:23:43.08 breakdown and my emotional 00:23:43.08\00:23:45.29 breakdown, He has reminded me 00:23:45.29\00:23:51.73 how important He should be, 00:23:51.73\00:23:53.83 not how important I think He 00:23:53.83\00:23:54.93 is, but how important He 00:23:54.93\00:23:56.90 really is to me, right? 00:23:56.90\00:23:58.97 So to me, that's quite 00:23:58.97\00:24:00.37 powerful. 00:24:00.37\00:24:02.17 Yeah, yeah, it's just-- 00:24:02.17\00:24:04.01 I could sit here and try to 00:24:04.01\00:24:05.54 explain it, but it's beyond my 00:24:05.54\00:24:07.64 words in Spanish, French, or 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.18 English, it's just 00:24:10.18\00:24:11.35 beyond my words. 00:24:11.35\00:24:12.78 >> Otto, tell us in closing 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.45 about scriptures. 00:24:14.45\00:24:16.55 How do the scriptures come 00:24:16.55\00:24:17.45 into your life? 00:24:17.45\00:24:19.09 >> I'm very aware of the 00:24:19.09\00:24:20.82 importance and the beauty of 00:24:20.82\00:24:23.46 the Holy Spirit and... 00:24:23.46\00:24:26.93 the commandments and 00:24:26.93\00:24:29.53 forgiveness and all those 00:24:29.53\00:24:31.80 attributes, but to me the 00:24:31.80\00:24:34.84 Godly attribute that really 00:24:34.84\00:24:38.31 blows my mind every single 00:24:38.31\00:24:39.81 time is grace, 00:24:39.81\00:24:41.98 God's grace and... 00:24:41.98\00:24:46.25 I don't know where we would 00:24:46.25\00:24:47.32 be, I don't know where I would 00:24:47.32\00:24:48.28 be if it wasn't for God's 00:24:48.28\00:24:49.78 grace, right?
